In Marathi and in Hindi the word धोखा has a meaning of betrayal. However the same word in Nepali stands for a gate, more like a entrance for the palace in this context. I wonder if there a connection between dhoka and kingdoms/palaces as there have been so many stories of betrayals in the history of the world and the kingdoms 🤴. . . Hanuman dhoka was the palace of Malla Dynasty and later ruled by Shah Dynasty in Nepal 🇳🇵. Parts of the palace were badly damaged in 2015 earthquake and and are being reconstructed. It still is a beautiful architecture painted with sober colours on a white walls and red brick buildings. . . Disclosure: With the surname Shah, I have no connections with the Shah dynasty. I am as close with it as with Amit Shah, the famous politician in India 🇮🇳. All we have in common is the surname. But yes, many folks in Nepal thought I am a Nepali and I would start a conversation in Nepali before quickly realising that I am a Hindi speaking neighbors of theirs. . . Interesting fact is Shah dynasty in Nepal comes from the Rajput ancestry and Prithivi Narayan Shah from this dynasty is credited with the starting of unification of what we call today is Nepal 🇳🇵. . . . Lhon: Dega: The locals call this monument Lhon: Dega, meaning Stone Temple. Built in around Malla Era, the interior of this monument is made of stones while the exterior is made of bricks, thus the name. Children in the days of yore used to play guchha and climb up the stairs. However, there is no deity inside the monument, there used to be a sculpture of Shesh Narayan but it no longer exists now.
