Feed a Brahmin on Amavasya. This shall keep the ancestors happy – obstacles shall be removed and there shall be no dearth of prosperity – and the house-hold shall be immune to the ‘evil-eye’ and other forms of black magic.

For gaining the blessings of the ancestors and getting freedom from the malefic effects of ‘pitr-dosh’ – pouring water ,milk, gangajal ,black sesame seeds ,sugar, rice all mixed together , in the roots of a ‘Peepal tree’, and offer flowers and the sacred thread ,chanting ;”OM NAMO BHAGWATEY VASUDEVAYE NAMAH” and circumbulating the tree, seven times .

The ancestors should be offered water on ever Amavasya – the right way of offering water is – In a copper vessel, water, mixed with gangajal , raw milk ,sesame seeds , barley ,Tulsi leaves, a grass blade , honey and a white flower – should be offered – facing the south direction , calling out – TAPRAANTAYAMI , TAPRAANTAYAMI , TAPRAANTAYAMI – thrice – the water should be poured out along the side of the thumb in to a vessel below – this does provide contentment to the ancestors – Remember to pour the collected water into some plant – do not throw this water any where in the house or outside – it should only be poured in to the roots of a plant.

According to the ‘Shastras’, the ancestors visit their homes, every Amavasya – so every person should donate to charity – as much as he can afford. Keeping a meal under a ‘Babool Tree’ [Acacia Tree] in the name of the ancestors also pleases them.

Ancestors have a special liking for ‘Kheer’ – [sweet porridge of rice and milk] – every Amavasya, preparing kheer and offering it to a Brahmin with his meals begets one of a thousand virtues. In the evenings, keeping a small portion of the ‘kheer under the ‘Peepal tree’, in the evening, helps in removing instability, from one’s life.

To avoid sudden mishaps and tame the enemies, can be fulfilled, by feeding a black dog, a chapatti smeared with mustard oil.

Install a Horse Shoe [of a black horse] on the top of the main door, on Amavasya; the open end should face the ceiling or above/up, if it is in your house; if, it is at the workplace, then the open end should face the floor or below/down – this saves one from the ‘evil-eye’ and stability of finances and happiness is ensured.

Your palms were sweaty as you looked around the room, nervously. M’Baku grabbed your hand and kissed it. “Relax. Take a deep breath.” He said. You tried to steady yourself as you realized that you could hinder M’Baku’s performance in the meeting. You were starting to wish that you had declined to be in this meeting.

“How long do you think this will go?” you asked.

“Some meetings can go as long as an hour. I don’t anticipate that today. If you don’t want to give input today, just watch and see how things go.” M’Baku said.

“What if I’m asked?” you said.

“Yam ivu, relax. Stop worrying.” He said. “You will be fine. We will be fine.” He took your hand and kissed each knuckle. Chief M’Bako walked in with Niyi.

“I hope everyone has had a good day.” M’Bako said. “And I’m sure all of you are aware, but we have a new guest with us today.”

You looked around the room, rolling your shoulders back and giving a warm smile to the other council members. “This is Y/N. She’ll be taking part in the council from now on. I’m sure everyone has been kept up to speed about our new developments in regards to…my son and his love life…or whatever you want to call it. So, let’s welcome her.” M’Bako sighed.

M’Baku shot him a look and a grimace, ultimately shaking his head. You took his hand to bring him back to reality. The meeting started and you watched M’Baku lead it with such a strong demeanor and talk about the politics of the Jabari. You remembered reading certain things from Niyi’s journal and drawing conclusions in your head. You kept up with the meeting and felt confidence, his confidence. He answered questions effortlessly and keep the meeting at a good pace. You fought the urge to smile so proudly at your sweetheart at work. It was at one point, he looked over to you and gave you a smirk.

“Young Y/N.” You looked up to see M’Bako glaring at you. You would have expected for this chill to go down your spine but, instead you didn’t feel phased. His glare didn’t make you shake. You didn’t feel nervous. You cross one leg over the other and glared back at him, matching his expression. “You work in the gardens, doing whatever your job entails. We’ve had an issue about whether we should expand on our croplands.”

“We aren’t sure if we should.” A council member said.

“Well, we have farmed on those lands for decades. We’ve been able to keep the land fertile but…” you started. “Our population has grown as we’ve mentioned and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down. We have plenty of lumber yards but, our second-best product is our agriculture. Shouldn’t we dedicate more land and effort to that? If we would open a new garden that creates more jobs and more produce to sell. Of course, that means more revenue all the way around.”

Council members began to nod their heads and whisper. M’Bako appeared unphased by your apparent success among the council. “Yes but, we’ve operated on those lands for 50 years. It’s blessed land. Hanuman has always ensured that we as a people will be taken care of. We won’t have to move.”

“True. But, the lands before were farmed on for 55 years. During that time, the fruits and vegetables decreased in size and lost taste. Herbs that were harvested were less potent and medicines didn’t work as well at that time as history has shown. It’s a vast field and we try to let one plot rest during a season while we use the other. But, why not maximize on what we have? The current land, if history repeats, has five years left on its soil, if that. The previous lands took 20 years to regain its vitality. A few of my co-workers speculated that we could potentially use it again. Restarting an irrigation system there wouldn’t be hard. We could test that land or use the empty plot in near the west village. The small stream there could facilitate water. That’s if the council sees fit.” You said.

M’Baku was looked at you, holding a hand to his mouth and fighting a smile. He didn’t expect you to come with so much information and facts. Before, you were nervous and fighting to not sweat. Here you were, speaking in such a loud voice to match his. Your eyes meeting each member as you spoke, daring them and making them pay attention to you. It even turned him on a bit.

Niyi wasn’t going to conceal how proud she was. She smiled from the Chief’s side amazed at how powerfully you spoke. You surprised her, thinking this wouldn’t be the day you actually take part. M’Bako looked away from you and to the floor, nodding. Silently conceding to you but, wouldn’t verbally commend you. You kept your composure as you looked around the room at other members.

“We will look into what your insight and make the right decision.” The council member said.

“And the fact that your father had nothing to say afterward!” You exclaimed. M’Baku looked around and held a finger to you, reminding you to keep quiet. “I didn’t think I could do it. And of course, I know agriculture but, hearing you go on was empowering to me. Usually, I’d be nervous and pent up, but this was different. I felt more comfortable. And I don’t think it’s was because of gardening. Oh, M’Baku. It felt so good.”

“I’m well aware of how you feel.” M’Baku said, keeping one hand wrapped around your waist. He motioned you along and pulled you into his bedroom. “I’m so proud of you.”

“You were great in there, too.” You said. “I do believe I have you to thank for my success though.”

“Oh, having you there put me at ease as well, yam ivu.” He said, pulling you in and giving you a kiss. You kissed back, caressing his cheek. M’Baku held you close and your heart fluttered. You got that warm feeling again but, it was more intensified. You moaned in his mouth as he deepened the kiss. He pushed you further into the room and you gasped as you bent your legs and you met by the mattress and fur comforter.

“M’Baku.” You moaned as he kissed your neck.

“How do you get this off?” M’Baku asked, pulling at the tie of your corset.

“Here.” You said, sitting up and undoing the back. M’Baku went back to kissing you as he unfastened the short fur cover on his back and his belt. You pulled away, taking M’Baku’s wrists to stop him.

“What if someone walks in?” you asked.

M’Baku looked back at the door and groaned. “I’ll close the door.” M’Baku half-jogged to the double doors while trying to take his shoes off and was about to close them when Niyi came. He kept a crack in to expose only his head.

“Where’s Y/N? You snatched her away so fast I didn’t get to congratulate her.” She said.

“Ahh, she had a sudden headache. She’s laying down for the afternoon.” M’Baku retorted.

“Oh, is she okay?” Niyi said trying to peak in. M’Baku closed the doors more, withdrawing his own head.

“No, she’ll be fine. Just the excitement has gotten to her, she needs rest.” M’Baku said.

“Oh, well. Just bring her to me before she leaves.” Niyi said. M’Baku nodded before watching Niyi walk away. He turned back to you after closing the doors completely. You giggled as he dragged himself back over to the bed.

“Things just keep getting in the way.” M’Baku said, laying down next to you.

You smirked, settling into the comforter and looking at him. “We just have to have patience. We can wait a little while longer.”

M’Baku propped himself up on his elbow and used his other hand to caress your cheek. “I love you.”

“I love you, too.” You said. You leaned in and gave him a kiss. You pulled away and looked around the room. “So, this is your bedroom.”

“Yeah. I’ve had the same bedroom since I was a boy.” M’Baku said looking around.

“Do you move into a new room once you’re Chief?” you asked, pulling lint from his hair.

“I believe so. Why? Would you spend nights with me? Take a part of the closet and leave a few things here.” He said.

“Is this you asking me to move in?” You said.

“No…not necessarily.” He said, playing with your hand. “I’m just saying it would be nice to have you here with me on most days. It would be nice to have dinner with you, wake up next to you, all those other things.”

“So, you want me to move in? Before I’m Chieftess?” you said.

“It would just seem a bit improper for the Chieftess to not sleep under the same roof as the Chief, regardless if they are married or not. Again, it would just be a nice thought. You can tell me no if that’s not what you want.” M’Baku said, shaking his head and looking down into the fur of his comforter.

“You’d be upset if I told you no.” you answered after seeing his display of emotions.

“I’d be disappointed but, I would come to respect your decision.” He said.

“But, I love you.” You sighed. You watched his eyes drop and you pressed your lips together. You got this defeated feeling, like something had given up inside you. However, you knew it was inside him. You scooted closer to him. “I’ll put thought into it. My no isn’t set in stone.”

M’Baku nodded, leaning in a kissing your forehead. You gave a loud yawn. “So about that nap you told your stepmother about?”

M’Baku chuckled and grabbed you by your waist, positioning you almost perfectly on a pillow. His bed smelled like him with a hint of a softer fragrance. You turned on your side, settling in and taking deep breaths. M’Baku draped a spare blanket over you, slightly tucking it into your sides so you were snug. He watched you drift off until your breathing was even and soft.

He marveled at you as he sat on the bed, a peaceful sight. He thought about what it would be like waking up to you every morning. Rolling over and seeing your beautiful face. He eased out of the bed, being gentle and not wanting to wake you. He went over to the large dresser and opened the small box. He sighed thinking to put the ring on your finger now. But, it would be improper to just do it like that. Almost cowardly. But, when would ever be a good time? M’Baku sighed feeling like it was going to take a lot more work now to get what he would want.

We may know Thailand as a country that has a rich and diverse culture, beautiful beaches, great food, and of course Muay Thai. Most of us know Muay Thai as the most popular martial art produced in Thailand but little did we know that there are several martial arts that are from this beautiful country. On this episode, Jeremy talks about Muay Boran and other martial arts of Thailand. Muay Boran, which literally means “ancient boxing”, is the ancestor to the more famous martial art, Muay Thai. Now you’ve likely heard of Muay Thai Translate roughly the art of eight limbs or eight limb boxing, I’ve read a number of different translations and I don’t speak Thai and I can’t tell you definitively what it means, I have to go on what I’m reading but, Muay Thai is not the only Thai martial art. It may be the most popular today, it may have influenced MMA, actually quite a bit of self defense even in the traditional martial arts here, but it is not only the traditional martial art from Thailand. The most popular martial art from Thailand that is not Muay Thai actually precedes Muay Thai It’s called Muay Boran. Muay Boran or ancient boxing is a martial art that is originally from Thailand in the late 18th century and the ancestor of as I’ve said, the more commonly known martial art called Muay Thai The history of Muay Boran starts with a warrior nai khanom tom in 1767, the kingdom of Ayutthaya, now Thailand, lost after a long series of wars against the Burmese. This war, ended the four century old Siamese kingdom, and may people are held captives and taken to Burma. Among these prisoners was the skilled Thai boxer named nay khanom tom. About 7 years later the Burmese king organized a festival that involved a competition between the Thai boxers and the Burmese boxers. The king wanted to see whose technique was superior because the Burmese had their own different style of boxing. Burmese boxing mainly involve fist for fighting while the that boxing as you might expect, use knees elbows feet and fist. The Thai chose khanom tom to fight against the champion of the Burmese. As part of the custom, khanom tom performed his way kru dance accompanied by music before the fight. KHanom tom defeated and even knocked out the Burmese champion and the Burmese cannot easily accept this defeat, they even went so far as to say that the way kru dance was black magic. After all this, the Burmese king sent another 9 skilled boxers to fight khanom tom, one after the other and none of these Burmese fighters succeeded in defeating them even though khanom tom must’ve been exhausted fighting off ten boxers in arrow. The Burmese king finally accepted defeat and even applauded khanom tom because of his extraordinary boxing skills. Then the king said, according to legend anyway, that “every part of the Siamese is blessed with venom, even with his barehand he can fell 9 or 10 opponents, but his lord was incompetent and lost the country to the enemy.” if you had been any good there’s no way the city of Ayutthaya would ever have fallen.” the victory led to the release of khanom Thom along with his comrades. The Burmese king even khanom Thom his choice of two rewards. Know Thom chose 2 Burmese wives over riches offering the reason that money was easier to find. Even today, his victory is annually celebrated on Thailand on march 17th and they call it the national Muay thay day.

Khanom tom did not use Muay Boran exactly but rather another form of martial art similar to it. There were several ancient boxing styles from different regions of Thailand at that time but they were just lumped together in a single term, Muay Boran. And we kind of see this today when we talk about karate or we talk about taekwondo. There are variations and you know, can we really get down to what the true and I’m using air quotes as I say this, karate is, the true taekwondo etc. The modern day Muay Boran is different from the original one. Originally, it was used for self defense sn it was part of the training of military soldiers. It involved lethal and ground fighting techniques that included grappling, the Thai embraced the martial art and became part of the Thai culture where fighter from the different regions of the country would gather to test their skills. Eventually, fighters began to wrap their hands and forearms with rope not only to serve as protection but also to wound their opponents. And I suspect those of you that are old van Damme fans, might have some visuals as I’m saying this. The reputation of Muay Boran fighters heightened because of their efficiency in close combat and the best became royal guards to the king. Around 1920s and 1930s, Muay Boran was disciplined and modernized by king rama the 7th so that participants would fight in a ring with a set of rules. It adapted the western style of boxing in terms of referees and rounds and the use of gloves rather than rope to reduce the wounds that can be inflicted during the fight. Moreover, many techniques especially the deadly ones were also banned. And this was the reason why Muay boran’s popularity declined. Because of this reformation, the “ancient boxing” eventually called Muay Thai also referred to as the art of eight limbs. Muay Thai then gained popularity internationally and it produced thousands, tens of thousands maybe even hundreds of thousands of practitioners around the world. But Muay Thai, Muay Boran are not the only Thai martial arts. Here are a few others that I’ll be honest, before we started doing the research I’ve never even heard of.

Muay chaiya. Muay chaiya is an old martial arts founded around 200 years ago by a military leader of the ritana kusin kingdom. It got its name from a town in Thailand. Its techniques are effective against heavier opponents even without using too much strength. However, immediate counter attacks are required because the attacks may not be strong enough to cause heavy damage on the opponent. A Muay chaiya fighter’s defense is difficult to penetrate because much like Muay Thai, elbows and shins are used to block the attacks. Their hops and jumps make them even more difficult to hit as they move around.

Lerdit or Muay lerdrit is a martial art derived from Muay Boran and has a pretty close resemblance in terms of the techniques used. Lert, pardon my pronunciation if anybody bout there actually speaks Thai with a proper accent, means superior while rit means power. So we could translate it to boxing of superior power. Its techniques were also based from the strategies of the special infantry corps which are tum, ground, top meaning crush, chap meaning grab and hak meaning break the joints. Muay lerdit is effective on close combat as fighters are trained to have strong muscles and tendons to perform strikes grappling and finishing blows more effectively. And if you’re like me you might be visualizing someone shin kicking a palm tree right now. There seems to be this broad cultural similarity among these martial arts and I think we see that in every country. You know, when we look at the martial arts of japan, they all have a similar attitude.

Krabi krabong can be called the armed version of Muay Boran. Krabi means sword and krabong means staff. Other types of weapons are also used such as dob which is a single edged sword and ga wich is a bladed staff and maisuksong which is a pair of clubs. According to history, most of the techniques of krabi krabong are influenced by Japanese martial arts such as Okinawan kabuto.

Silat pattani. Silat pattani is a martial art formed, originated in the pattani kingdom which is now a state in Thailand. It has a heavy similarity with gatka wich is an Indian martial arts style. It has no predefined forms but rather has 2 freestyle forms called Ramayana and animal forms. The Ramayana form includes three figures which is for good posture, sitaduwi which is for short movements and fatal attacks, and hanuman which is for strength and agility. Each figure has different behaviors, movements and mannerisms that should be imitated. The animal form consists of 6 animals which are the deer for agility, monkey for speed agility and impulsiveness, snake for hard and soft techniques that can include blades, bird from the meking eagle rooster and crane, tiger for strength and dragon for locking the opponent using limbs. Initially, Silat pattani doesn’t involve weapons, the practitioners must learn and eventually master the fundamentals before applying the weapons to the techniques. The weapons used include kayu or the bate which are sticks, pari which is a machete, broad sword sort of thing, chinday samping, tombok lembing which is a spear, keris which is a dagger, karambit which is a tiger claw knife and gadak which is a mace. You know I always find it interesting when we talk about martial arts of a particular country, how we can elements from other martial arts in them. As we’re talking about Silat pattani we’re hearing things around animals. If you’ve talked about animals as they relate to martial; arts you’re probably thinking of Chinese martial arts at least I am. And you know, this kind of lends itself to something I’ve said on the show that you know, martial arts are going to have a lot of similarities regardless where they come from because there’s only so many ways we can move our body. And cultural influence can be pretty strong especially when we go back when there weren’t dozens, hundreds, thousands of variations in martial arts when there wasn’t internet, tv and movies, people would share these things. And if you were a newer martial artist, its stands to reason that someone sharing something with you, you’re probably not going to spend years or decades with the opportunity to learn from that person so you’re going to take what they teach you in a short period of time and combine it with what you know, what you understand from your own country, you’re own culture. And thus we see some of this spreading. I think it’s cool.
