Deltarune: Fool's Fate Ch. 5 Secret Boss

IT'S WIZARD TIME MOTHER████ERS!!! No time to explain! I cast kooky crazy wizard dog!

Okay maybe there's some time to explain. Everyone, say hello to Doggone. My idea for Fool's Fate's chapter 5 boss and my submission into @grimmdeltarune's Chaos Clash Tourney! Remember when I said I was gonna go with a busted police radio? Bam! I lied! Crazy wizard dog be upon ye!

Okay but what's their origins? I need to explain where I got the name dog gone it! (Hehe, get it? That's where their name's from.) As for item, Doggone is a newspaper clipping about Dess's disappearance that's in an evidence folder at the Police Station. It's staff is even a branch with Dess's fur found on it that was also in the evidence locker.

"Lorrie, how did you get crazy wizard from that? " I hear some of you reasonably ask. All in due time, my little pupils, for now we must get onto text quirks! For Doggone's text, a lot of it their text gets blacked out and censored. Not all of it, mostly proper nouns like names or places, but also just random nouns that seem randomly censored. The exception being anything or anyone mentioned in the news paper clipping Doggone is in the Light World. I can show some examples under the cut with their backstory and dialogue. The only times Doggone can ONLY use words specifically from that clipping are when it's trying to talk about stuff the man doesn't want revealed.

For Doggone's soul mode, it uses the purple soul mode, like Bitsy. Just Doggone's purple soul mode attacks are lines of text rather than spider webs. Also unrelated to the soul mode but another fun fact about them before I get into backstory and stuff. Doggone is flat like paper. Literal Flat Stanley/Paper Mario physics. They seem like they might have mass, but when viewed completely from the side, they're just a line.

Backstory and Dialogue under the cut (Fair warning, it got really, REALLY long...)

Dogson D. Gonit. Investigative Journalist and reporter for the news station in the Police Station Dark World. Never an actual detective or private investigator, those sorta roles were filled by Captain Chariot and the guard, but Dogson always did his best to sniff out the best story. A true sleuthing pup, Dogson's keen nose and sense for a good scoop was something which found him a lot of success in his career, especially when it came to reporting on potential new cases for Chariot's guard.

That was until one day a particular Lightner went missing in the Light World.

Missing person's cases were some what rare in the Station Dark World, and Hometown in general. Most the time it was just some kid who pretended to run away or got a little lost playing in the woods and many of them were solved before a reporter like Dogson got to report on it at all. More often then not, the missing cases Dogson reported on where lost pets or items. But the case of Dess Holiday was a special one. It was something the entire station seemed to be talking about, and one that went unsolved long enough that Dogson got to report on it, and not just in the missing section of the paper.

"LOCAL GIRL GOES MISSING IN WOODS. On September 15th, 212X, local girl December "Dess" Holiday was reported missing. She was last seen playing in the woods with her younger sister and two neighboring kids. After loosing track of her, Asriel Dreemurr, one of Dess's neighbors contacted local police, reporting to Chief Asgore and Deputy Undyne that Dess and Kris, Asriel's younger sibling, had gone into the bunker in the forest and wouldn't respond when Asriel and Noelle Holiday, Dess's younger sister, called for them, after which Asriel went for help. After managing to rescue Kris from the bunker, the police weren't able to locate Dess Holiday and even though questioned about what happened, Kris was reportedly too shaken to answer. Mayor Carol Holiday, Hometown mayor and Dess's mother, has ordered a town wide search and advised citizens to stay away from the bunker. Are the towering trees surrounding our sweet little town really as safe as we thought? More on pg 12."

The case of the missing Holiday was a big one in the Station Dark World, with a lot of pressure on both Lightners and Darkners to perform and find her. This was something Dogson was well aware of, and he had every intention to report on every new bit of information that came the station's way. Yet it seemed by the time Dogson was ready to print his next update on the case, the buzz around it had already died down. Captain Chariot refusing to let Dogson release the story because of "bad PR", instead focusing on a story from one of Dogson's colleagues about the new police chief in the Light World. According to the Captain, anything new about this case had to go under the radar and eventually it seemed like the case was dropped all together, the trail going icy cold.

Dogson wasn't so content to just drop a scoop as big as this though, and so after putting on his jacket and hat and kissing his wife goodbye, the journalist set out into the depths of the Paper Trail Forest to find the Evidence Locker in hopes to find something to get Captain Chariot to reopen the case.

Ms. Gonit: And I'm afraid that's the last anyone's heard of him.

I've tried to convince some of the guard to go looking for him myself, but it seems none of them want to risk it...

Lightners, you seem strong, aren't you?

If you decide to venture towards the Paper Trail Forest, would you be willing to look for my dear Dogson for me?

These past few years have been tough, and even if the worst I fear has come true...

Some closure at least would be nice.

No one really knows what happened to Dogson D. Gonit out in those woods. The only thing his wife and family knew was that he never came back. In all honestly, Ms. Gonit expected her dear husband to be gone forever. In a way... he was.

Dogson got lost looking through the Paper Trail Forest and couldn't find his way back. He wandered and wandered for what felt like days looking for the Evidence Locker, or at the least the exit, yet it seemed like he was just chasing his own tail. Just going in endless circles and circles, every corner he turned looked like the last, the pages and pages of leaves all blending together as one. It was maddening.

It wasn't until all hope seemed lost when Dogson found somebody. Or rather, was found BY somebody. A strange someone, a man who offered a helping hand. A man who led Dogson to the Truth. Not the truth about the case of the missing Holiday as the straggled reporter might have hoped when he agreed to follow the man out of desperation, but a greater Truth. A Truth which showed him just how trapped he was... A Truth... which broke Dogson freed Doggone from the burdens of it's mind.

Dogson was gone. A life forgotten along with the name. Now there was only Doggone. A crazy old Darkner believing themself to be a powerful wizard, living out in the woods and on an eternal quest to find the Evidence Locker the Chamber of Truth. Doggone may not know why it wants to get into the Chamber of Truth, they just knows they have to find it. Inside such an illusive and mysterious trove of treasure and truth there must be something truly great and powerful, after all. Some kind of artifact befitting a great and powerful wizard like Doggone.

And Doggone seemed to find the perfect opportunity to get to the Chamber of Truth when it saw three young Lightner heroes enter it's domain...

I had a lot of fun coming up with Doggone, especially since I was on call with friends and we kept referencing wizard memes. Originally, I just had the idea of a journalist who got lost investigating the story of a missing girl (cough cough, Dess, cough cough), but I worried that would step on Detective Noir's territory too much. I think with the wizard aspect, I no longer have to worry about that.

Doggone and Noir are still rivals though. Even if Doggone has completely lost its marbles and will try to interview people by asking them to step into its office, that is really just a mossy clearing with a stump in the woods or a bus stop.

Hi everyone here's my secret boss yaayyy (I'm totally not writing this on the last day)

*anyways,* meet scruffy!

yup, I told you the inspiration would be weird. scruffy is my chapter 5 secret boss for my take for the holiday Mansion dark world, and if you couldn't already tell: yes, he's based on that one hello kitty character (cinnamoroll)

his character, design and aesthetic choices are based a lot off of cinammoroll/sanrio in general.

his Item in the light world is - well, a cinnamoroll plush. or at least, the deltarune universe equivalent of that.

his speech quirk is meant to feel childlike/cute and innocent, although I'm not sure exactly what it would look like. it's a work in progress, mmk? <3

his soul mode is CYAN, but we'll get to that later...

Scruffy is teased in chapter three a couple times. My take has a very small area based off of kids shows, and the miniboss/minigames is based off of a comically obvious hello kitty parody. after you beat the minibosses (based off hello kitty, melody and kuromi respectively) they will open a shop, where they briefly mention how there was supposed to be a fourth member of the show...

scruffy is also teased by a cardboard cutout advert in the cooking district.

scruffy's dark world is the HOLIDAY WORLD, with the fountain being opened in the holiday mansion (aka the mayor/noelles house) I would love to talk about that dark world more sometime, but the general vibe it has is a "late night city in december" feel to it. anyways, scruffy can first be found at the waterfront, an area of the city overlooking the river. he then gets very attached to pretty much everyone, since he's so lonely. he assists you ever now and than In the chapter, opening up a shop and generally just keeping you company.

the secret boss fight:

Scruffy's fight is basically him having a massive panic attack. he realizes that you're going to seal the fountain and dosen't want to be alone again. when you reach the ice palace and are approaching the fountain, scruffy snaps and uses his magic to break the ice palace into two, preventing you from going further. the ice the party stands on starts floating away into the river, and the battle starts. (or something like that idk)

As I mentioned earlier, scruffys soul mode is CYAN. I'll be honest here: I based the Mechanic off of the mad mew mew fight but vision crew did that first. so it's basically the exact same soul mechanic as the cyan soul in vcdr. the heart splits into two halves and you are locked in a grid, but can move the halves of the soul horizontally and diagonally- kinda like a rythm game! think ddr

as for attacks, I have some very vague ideas, so I'll spitball them here. why not

cloud:

a raincloud with a sad scruffy face on it. it will rain down tears the player must avoid to not take damage.

floating hearts: hearts appear below the battle box and float upwards.

star wand: scruffy uses a star wand to call down stars at the soul.

plane: a plane bullet that will occasionally fly through the battle box

head bobbing attack: idk really how to describe this one, not sure what the pulled pattern would be but the "head bobbing" is simillar to that one attack from the uty flowey fight

SECRET BOSS THEME:

while I sadly am not a composer, scruffys boss theme would be pretty unique compared to other sb themes. It would highly be inspired by breakcore/vocaloid/ music, I actually made a playlist of the three songs that inspired me the most! check it out if you want

I just wanted to say, from the bottom of my heart, thank you all for submitting your characters, joining this tournament, voting, cheering on our contestants, and overall just having a fun time expressing your creativity through this niche community that we all call home. I made this tournament so that we could all use our creativity to push ourselves further beyond. . . And I think that we were able to accomplish that with this tournament. I am so glad that this community was able to get together and do something like this. . .

And now, a few closing statements for my 300th post on this Blog.

Folks, I'll be honest with you all, I'm not sure how I got this far. This community has shifted so much in this short time, it's hard to see how we got here in the first place. We lost and regained my dear friend Mercair, we went through two ARGs where several people got replaced by AI while Sakriss was introduced to the world, almost all of my Secret Bosses got redesigned, fun was had, and friends were made. . . To @glitch-the-artist , whom I have spent way more time with, in all honesty, I want to thank you for all that you've done for this community. Your work is amazing and has inspired me to work harder than ever. . . To @mercair , who left for a long while before returning with the incredibly made @dont-play-deltarune-at-3am ARG and a new Secret Boss, Sakriss! You've always been an incredible friend, an inspiration to many, and a niche micro-celebrity in this side of the Deltarune Secret Boss Fandom. I owe a lot to you, man, and I still don't regret turning you into Sonatta that one time. . . To @mrchaosman , who's taking a break from posting to focus on his mental health. . . Thank you. You were always there for me when I needed you, you built me up and I. . . I never returned the favor. . . And I regret all of those times where I left you on read. I hope to do better after this, I mean it this time. . . To those six other people who were at one point in my mind. . . May you rest in peace. You made up a small part of my life that. . . I kind of regret now that I think of it. Your sacrifices weren't in vain, y'all. . . But even then, I don't miss y'. . . Void Hotline is a small Deltarune AU I've had a hand in making about WD and Dess, along with a small group of other characters including the Goners, Chara, Flowey, Seam, Everyman, and the Skeleton Brothers, all working at a call center which is specifically designed to make the Secret Bosses go insane and know the truth about their world. I wouldn't expect much from it, due to it being an uphill battle with me and the team constantly forgetting to work on it, but I feel like with the help of some other people, specifically you guys, maybe this can go somewhere. If you're interested in helping with this AU, please message me about it and I will see if you're fit for the team. Together, I hope that we can make this stupid little AU. . . Secret Boss For My Own Event - Mats!

This is Mats! Mats is the Secret Boss for Sans and Papyrus's House. This may at first be a bit confusing because of his design but I based him off of the disheveled version of the donation room that's found in the Switch release of Undertale. This is the place where you fight Mad Mew Mew, so I figured that I could base him off of her and make his soul mode the Switch Exclusive Soul Mode. My concept for my version of Sans and Papyrus's home as a Dark World is sort of like a Ren Faire. It'd be based off of Medieval Village with Papyrus or someone similar to him as the main boss, but it's also a bit of a parody of this sort of world, reflecting Sans's personality. You'd find Mats after going through a giant waterfall, which would be the Dark World equivalent of Sans's Sink. Behind the waterfall would be a secret area with an abandoned festival that'd be around the size of the beginning location of Chapter One. The one with the weird eyes and stuff. Anyway, there you'd find Mats!

Mats is a very inviting and warming character, although being a bit zany and wacky from not having contact with anyone in years. You see, he wasn't always such a small Darkner. In fact, he used to be a horrific beast that scared away anyone near them. . . That was until He showed up and allowed him to be his true self and gave him some. . .information about the world he lived in and about his future endeavors. He soon realized that he was only truly here to bring enjoyment to The Player, and decided to make a festival to bring joy to as many people as possible. Many Darkners came. . . And just as many left when, after getting a bit too rowdy, he returned to his beastly forme and terrorized the Darkners who went to the festival. After he returned to his senses, he felt terrible for what he had done. In truth, he found it freeing to bring joy to others. Losing that was terrible, such is the state he's in when you find him.

He's ecstatic to find that someone has finally come back to the Festival Grounds, and uses mini games and food and fun times to let The Fun Gang have the most fun that they possibly could at the Forgotten Festival. . .That is until they try to leave. . .And that's when Mats gets Mad. . . In a fit of desperation, they return to their beastly forme and, in a blind rage, attack The Fun Gang. You fight Mad Mats until you either kick their shins in or return them to their normal forme. . . He was weakened from the fight, and realizes that maybe he was too overzealous and that maybe saying goodbye to this Festival and bring joy to The Fun Gang by giving them strength. . .

So that's Mats! I'm gonna admit, I don't think his story was the best I've ever written, his motivations are a bit strange and I think I didn't really block out his story all to well, but I hope you like him! As for fun facts, Mats is Transmasc. I thought that was something I should mention I guess. His Light World item is a certificate that is found within the ruins of the Dog Room and his Mad forme is loosely based on the wacky inflatable tube Ice-E in that room. His tracks would be:

Ladies, gentlemen, both, neither, and everything else in between, welcome to Grimm's Chaos Clash! I'm your host, Doodle, bringing you news of this upcoming event for the Secret Boss Community!

The idea is very simple: those participating will make a Secret Boss design over the course of one week, being through May 27th to May 31st. These designs need to be strange, wacky, silly even! I want all of you to find some really weird inspirations and use all of your creative potential to create a weird little Skrunkly! After making all of these Secret Bosses, they'll be put in a fight to the death to see who made the silliest little goober. Winner gets bragging rights and Spamton's will to live. It is highly encouraged to go all out with these bosses. I'm talkin' making some pretty good lore, going through several takes on the design until you find the best fit for the concept and the one that looks most appealing, maybe thinking of some dialog, maybe even compose something for all I care! All I want for all of you to do is for all of you to make the best design you can from the silliest places imaginable. These Secret Bosses also need to be tagged with the tag #ChaosClashTourney to be able to qualify for the Tourney and just for convenience. Have fun and let the chaos begin! See you then!

(I want to do my kooky wizard dog from the forest, Doggone, especially as people I'm on call with keep helping me properly develop him as I'm drawing his ref post but since I technically came up with him a few days ago and teased a sketch of him a few days ago, before the tourney was posted, I'm not sure if I'm allowed to use him.)
