"Oh, Jack. You silly boi. You know that help at the top of the stairs is no help at all."
---
Art piece i may delete later about my parents offering money to me and my sisters to pay for either grad school (a thing I don't want and can't do with my disability) or my wedding (also a thing I don't need/want), but not for anything that would actually help me escape poverty and find stable housing and income.
Like, I recognize the privilege of being able to complain that my parents have offered me a bunch of money but in the wrong way.
But also if that money is on top of a flight of stairs that I can't climb (but my sisters can), then I haven't really been offered money, so much as I have watched money I need be placed somewhere I can't reach it. Which tbh feels worse than if it was never mentioned to me in the first place.
I was gonna send this art to them and i wrote this big long message to go with it, but then I decided to wait until my therapy session on Tuesday to talk it thru with her first, since I've literally never regretted doing that.
Besides, both of my parents are lawyers and right now they're providing me and my friends with a lot of free legal advice about this property we're trying to buy together, so I don't want to rock the boat currently.
I just wish I knew if I had access to that money as a poor person in need of stable housing and quality disability care, and I wish my parents weren't world-class hLepers who have a long and triggering history of engaging me in rigorous debate about the kind of help I should be allowed to receive from them as a disabled person.
Nothing like having to provide an argument that would hold up in court every time I'm sick and need help! Love that! Love that I can't even talk about money with them now without having invasive thoughts about it for days to come due to past incidences in which this repeated behavior of theirs literally endangered my life!!
Not like I need that mental capacity for working on the largest and most exciting opportunity of my life that also happens to line up with my hopes and dreams for the future!! It's fine!! What do I even need mental capacity for anyway?????
This wouldn't even be the first time this little Distrust Fund has caused problems for my relationship with my parents. They are very opposed to that money being used to help my disability and it has caused PROBLEMS for us that we have never quite recovered from.
It's just difficult to be reminded that although our relationship has gotten better (mostly thanks to me setting boundaries), that doesn't mean they now actually believe what I need for my disability when I tell them.
They really do love me, and they have only ever acted with the best of intentions . But good intentions cease to matter when the impact is harmful and repeated. And they have proven to be repeatedly incapable of providing non-ableist support for me again and again and again. They've even genuinely tried to learn; and sometimes it really seems like my mom has made progress with her therapist (who is disabled), but who knows when I can so jarringly be reminded of how quickly that toxic ableist thinking can show its ugly face.
It's so clear to me and they don't even know it's there.
It feels like I'm in a horror movie when I try to get them to understand their own ableism, and that is a good good sign that I may want to consider an approach that minimizes my mental damage instead. Even if it means I don't get their stupid, deeply-conditional-and-yet-the-conditions-are-SO-vague-and-they-won't-admit-it money.
#original#diary#ableism#ableism cw#if they actually trusted me they'd just give me the fucking money but WHATEVER#maybe it's cause of all those times i was really reckless and irresponsible with money-- OH WAIT. THAT HAS LITERALLY NEVER FUCKING HAPPENED#I GRADUATED BUSINESS SCHOOL WITH HONORS AND HAVE NEVER HAD ISSUES WITH OVER-SPENDING#maybe they subconsciously think I'm stupid w money bc I'm poor. but i doubt my sisters could just get the whole lump sum either.#I HAVE BEEN LIVING FRUGALLY MY ENTIRE ADULT LIFE YOU BASTARDS#I would say there's a 5% chance they pleasantly surprise me but I have to be careful not to spend too much energy on it#the invasive thoughts around my family's ableism are super aggressive and constant when they start#and so i would rather have no help than that stinky-ass hLep that hurts my brain and heart so bad for days after#hLep#anyway i don't want their help paying for a wedding bc i am housing insecure with no income and so is my wife#and besides that wedding planning is hard and stressful and involves either including or snubbing relatives i don't like#so like if you offer me thousands of dollars i would be like Great! More savings means more safety and security!#i would NOT be like Okay time to spend $2000 on fucking flowers I have SHIT GOING ON#if i have a wedding then the cost will be the cost of pizza for all the guests.#also govt says i can't get married or i lose my disability payments so ryan and I just decided we are married years ago#i need SO much disability care equipment that i don't have and i am unable to hold a standard full time job#but yeah sure maybe I'll go get another DEGREE despite my interests being completely non academic. fuck OFF.#i have been writing or making art about this all evening this is not how I wanted to spend the evening it is past 4am#hopefully this processing and drawing and journaling will allow me to remove this issue from the very forefront of my mind#it's a careful line to walk between processing and obsessing. but good processing helps you stop obsessing#hopefully I can save some of the more painful parts of this for therapy so I can focus on other stuff for the next couple days#listen if interacting with someone in a certain way makes you feel like you're in a horror movie then something needs to change#and sometimes the change is that we need to make literal and emotional distance between us and those people bc they aren't learning#okay okay time for edibles and a shower i fuckin earned it and even if i didn't I can do whatever I fucking want 👌#and also I deserve nice things by default#and so do you

(if you are comfy ofc) can you speak a little bit about why you choose law school and how you ended up in your current practice area? i'm seriously considering applying next year (i've taken the lsat, done research, talked to people, even written essays lol) and i feel like a jd would be a natural extension of my current work but i've never taken any legal-esque courses and I'm afraid i'll hate it. i also think i would most like govt work but im not sure if that's what i actually will like. did you go in with legal experience? how did you find the adjustment? what made you want to go into your current practice area? anything u can share is very helpful and i wish u luck with ur new job! <3
Hi! Of course! Sorry this is very rambly, I wanted to write down all my thoughts so I'll put it under the cut.
I went straight from undergrad to law school. My sophomore year of college was when I first started considering law school as a post-graduation option. I started doing jobs and internships in the immigration law arena (immigration casework for a senator, refugee resettlement, asylum stuff), but didn't really do anything touching other areas of law. One of my undergrad majors was humanitarian studies, so I knew from the start my focus would be on non-profit/public interest/policy/ngo work. If I remember right I took maybe one "law" class? My senior year, I was deciding between law school, doing a masters in something else like public policy, or going straight into work for an ngo, and decided law school made the most sense for me. Some of the factors that I weighed were the versatility of a law degree against the non-versatility of a masters, availability of law school scholarships compared to financial aid for other masters programs, low salaries for ngo work, and job market security.
Going into 1L year I thought I wanted to do public policy work. I had liked the immigration work I'd been doing but was hesitant about doing it on a firm level and thought immigration policy would be a good fit. I did a policy fellowship the summer after my 1L year and hated it. In retrospect, some of that probably had more to do with the fact it was summer 2020 and I was miserable for other reasons, but all together it left me in a place where I was a bit panicked about what I would actually do after graduation. I ended up taking a job doing public defender work the summer after my 2L year on a "why not try it out" whim and absolutely loved it. I found the work exciting and engaging and realized I actually love being in court.
That set me up to do more criminal defense work my 3L year; I did criminal appeals stuff, federal pd work, and a bunch of other things where I was trying to get as much defense experience as possible. I also did some asylum work my 3L year, which was my first foray back into immigration related work since I had started law school.
When I was job searching, I only looked at public interest or PD work. The law firm life is not for me, so I completely steered clear. I ended up accepting a job with legal aid, where I've been the last two years. I've been doing civil rights work with an emphasis on Native American rights, which has combined elements of policy work, civil litigation, criminal law, and more. My biggest take away from this job is that I fucking despise civil litigation. I like the in court stuff but civil discovery makes me want to die. Besides that, I've enjoyed the criminal stuff and policy stuff I've done at this job, but the amount of civil litigation in my caseload has been killing me.
I wanted to find a new job for the sake of my blood pressure and to get away from civil litigation and for other personal reasons (geography lol) so when I started tentatively looking, I was set on doing pure PD work or doing something more specialized that wouldn't include general civil lit. Throughout the application and interview process I remembered how much I had loved doing immigration law and why that was what put me on the path towards law school in the first place. My new job is going to be doing asylum law with a non-profit, and I'm so excited.
All of that to say, I tried out different practice areas and have loved some and hated others, and everyone I know is still figuring it out, too. Two years out of law school, more than half of the people I know from law school have changed jobs or switched practice areas because it's so hard to know what it will actually be like when you're in the thick of it. One of the advantages of a law degree, in my opinion, is that it does provide that flexibility of a strong academic base that you can use to jump around and try out different things without having to get another degree or certificate. You can easily go in thinking you'll like one type of work, try it out your 1L summer, and then try something else out if you hate it, or find new paths you didn't even know were a thing until you're in that legal network.
Law school is nothing like the practice of law, especially not the first year. There are people who hate law school but excel in actual legal practice, or who enjoyed the intellectual exercise of law school but don't like the day-to-day minutia of being a lawyer. It can be overwhelming in the beginning, but once you're past the first year and you can actually pick your classes it's so much more interesting (I despised the 1L classes but genuinely enjoyed almost every class I took as a 2L and 3L). 1L year is not at all comparable to anything in undergrad, so as far as that transition goes, it can be a trial by fire, but you bond with your peers quickly because everyone else is also wondering what the fuck is going on.
One other thing I will say about deciding whether or not to go to law school is to seriously weigh the financials. I'm really lucky and don't have any law school debt. That's allowed me more freedom and alleviates some of the pressure. Friends and people I know who do have law school debt are in a position where they feel pressured into going towards big law or are more tied to staying at jobs they don't like, compared to people I know who are also debt-free or lower debt and are more willing to take risks. Unfortunately, the debt cloud really does completely change what post-grad life looks like.
Ahh sorry this is so long but I am happy to talk in more specifics about any questions you might have! Feel free to message me!

i saw in ur bio it says ex-biochemist, i’m a rising 4th year biochemistry major and i’m curious about your career path! i don’t know many others who aren’t on the general medicine /med school track so i like to ask to get ideas from people what i’m gonna do after uni. my current plan is work in drug discovery r&d. if u don’t want to post for any privacy reasons just send me a chat on inbox :)
it's ok dw, i've been quite open abt my career & education here and on my former studyblr / skincare side blog @birdkoskincare (now abandoned, RIP). i went into biochem bc it was as broad a degree as i could choose within the life sciences but i really had no idea what i wanted to do with it, so it was essentially me pushing away the decision further.
then in my 2nd yr of uni i started getting more interested in cosmetics & skincare so i pursued that when it came to my MSc. there are no cosmetic sci degrees in portugal so i went for pharmaceutical tech which has a lot of overlap re: formulation and also features some cosmetics units. i did my final project & dissertation as an intern through erasmus for a european cosmetics company and worked as a formulator for them for 6 months, then graduated just as the pandemic hit.
right after graduation & defending my thesis, i started working as an intern for a local company through a govt program. i agreed to it bc a) money and b) they said it would be cosmetics-related, but it ended up..... not being in my area (formulation) at all, and being much more related to pure biochem research, lots of it not even tangentially related to cosmetics. tbf i also grew a lot more disillusioned w/ the cosmetics world, so there's that, but i really disliked working for this company and as soon as the govt funding ended they didn't re-hire me either, so good riddance.
by then my health had gone to shit and i couldn't job hunt. luckily i'd been preparing to start doing art commissions when that happened, and it's actually gone really well and it's now officially my full time job. i'm only able to do it bc i have my partner carrying most of our expenses, since i don't even make minimum wage most months, but it's much better to be self-employed as a chronically ill person. i like it a lot better than academia & STEM. i still have some papers to finish from that biochem research so that people stop bothering me about it, but i don't see myself returning to that field any time soon.
so idk if this is helpful at all since i've abandoned the biochem life! but yea that's my career path. drug discovery is super interesting, i took a few electives in that direction during my BSc, best of luck!

I think people would be able to have more savings if wasn't for student loans tbh. That whole thing is so predatory to me as an outsider. Also don't actors have to pay managers, publicists, agents etc? Its not as simple as just getting paid 1M and keeping all of it from an acting job. Then the taxes come in, where the billionaires get loopholes and those in the in the middle and lower income brackets are paying more than their fair share because of it. Bottom line everything seems to lead back to greedy ceos tbh
THANK YOU! 👏🏾
Student loans are for sure predatory! 🥴 I didn't realize it when I was going to University at the time, but after you graduate and see your paycheck get eaten up for years having to pay student loan debt, you start to recognize. 👀
Thankfully, I didn't have to incur nearly as much student loan debt as some of my peers since I had a few scholarships and govt-funded programs, but I still incurred debt!
It seems silly that the group of ppl that are just now getting out into the work force with the least amount of experience, so the least amount of pay is also the group that is already starting BEHIND the start line cuz you're getting out of college with debt. 🙄😒
Makes no sense whatsoever.
You spoke a word with this entire ask Anon. 💯

the war the govt is seemingly running with wellington and especially the council atm is so bizarre lol. is flatting even in the $400-600 range? i know i definitely wouldn't be able to afford my own place down there, and i assume there's next to no jobs going atm too. man i wish i made the move earlier on in life when it was slightly less falling apart
oh no jobs at all, i just got an email from my recruitment agency saying its pretty dead at the moment. there's some nice places for the 400-600 but you dont really get a chance to save. the place i was in in 2022 was dirt cheap. $180 a week. it was also rotting away, had a broken toilet, flatmates who left food to rot and never cleaned and a damp room that gave me mold poisoning so bad i had to move back home and see the doctors. its frustrating to see everyone who managed to get a place in 2017/2018 or earlier secure, while everything after 2020 is just a mess. like you get punished for being late to graduation, uni, life in general. and for me, all because i was so sick i couldnt walk. frustrating as hell.
