             The lamentation of the death of Jesus Christ is a favorite topic of many artists throughout history, and this is no exception. It has been used so often than the term “pieta” was coined to refer to these pieces all using the same subject matter. A “pieta” then refers to a piece of artwork referencing the mourning of the virgin Mary over the loss of her son, Jesus Christ. One of the most famous of these would most likely be the sculpture by Michelangelo created out of marble (ItalianRenaissance.org). I am located in a church in the village of Gorno Nerezi located on the slopes of Vodno, southwest of Skopje. The church that I am in was built by Alexis Angel, a Byzantine Prince and the son of Constantine Angel and Theodora. The church houses many artworks, each reflecting the dramatic realism of the Byzantines (Macedonia Travel Guide). There have been efforts staring in the 1950’s to preserve me and the other frescoes located within the church. The painter of the XII century remains anonymous, but was able to paint many vibrant and rich in color drawing in this gallery of a lot of saints, though this one is the most well-known of them all. This piece has an emphasis on the emotion between a mother losing her son, followed by the contrasting oranges and blues that add to the sheer artistry of the piece. The figures are donned with a halo, also referred to as a “nimbus,” to emphasize their importance and significance (Lope).
