I came across an interview where Billy Joel tacitly admitted to Goodnight Saigon being an anti-war song but unfortunately I didn't save it or even note which one it was. But his reasoning was if you just depict war honestly, which is what he was trying to do, it ends up being an anti-war story because war is terrible. He brought up All Quiet on the Western Front.

He doesn't sleep.

He's only been home a week, and he just can't fucking sleep, and it's...

Fuck.

He sits in his mother's kitchen, drinking a beer at three in the morning, reading the obituaries, which he knows he shouldn't be doing, but for whatever reason he just can't figure out what else to do with himself, despite the TV, and the piles upon piles of his stepfather's book he has open access to.

"There's porn," Lenny had offered. "Actually, there's a lot of porn, but there's other stuff, too."

He'd laughed at that. It is pretty funny.

This insomnia, however, is not.

He frowns deeply when there's a soft knock at the door, and when he opens it, his Zeyde is standing there, grinning at him.

Ethan blinks, confused. "Uh..."

"Get your shoes, let's go for a walk," the older man tells him.

"What are you doing here?"

"I was a soldier," Moishe reminds him. "I remember what it's like to come home and feel like dog shit. Get your shoes."

He does, and soon, the two of them are walking down the quiet street.

"I don't know why your mother needed such a big house," Moishe comments lightly. "You all were getting along fine in the apartment."

"I think Mama wanted to host bigger parties," Ethan shrugs. "And she wanted a bigger kitchen. I don't know. They seem happy."

"Well, that's the important thing, I suppose," Moishe nods. "So? Not sleeping?"

"Nope."

"What are you doing instead?"

"Drinking beer," Ethan responds honestly. "reading obituaries."

"Christ, Ethan."

"I know."

"Stop breaking your own heart, kid," Moishe advises him. "If you want to get your heart broken, go find a girl."

He chuckles a little. "You're probably right."

"I know I am, I have a lot of experience," Moishe reminds him. "Look, it's going to be very hard to put this behind you and keep moving forward."

"Somebody called me a baby killer at the airport when I got home," Ethan tells him. "When you came home from the war, you got a hero's welcome. You beat Nazis. You helped keep the world safe. I fought in a war no one asked for, and I feel...genuinely hated. You've always been proud of your war service. I...I feel like I fought for nothing. Fought for...what?"

"Times certainly have changed," Moishe agrees quietly. "But if you focus on that and let it get you down too much, it's not going to get you anywhere. What's the plan going forward?"

"Try to figure out how to sleep."

"And then?"

"...It's a good question."

Moishe sighs and pats his back. "We'll figure it out."
