Going to the movies
There's been a lot of talk lately about the "death of the movies" because people just aren't going to the cinema any more.
I've been thinking about this, and why I don't go to the movies very often these days. In the past I'd go at least twice a week -- once on Thursday to whatever new movie came out, and then again to a speciality cinema to see the latest Hong Kong or arthouse movie.
I stopped doing that a while ago. But why? There's lots of potential reasons, but most of them don't feel like the whole story...
It's not just because I'm a Grown Up now, with a real job and all that, because in the past I was a proper adult and still went often - I did it for twenty years.
It's not just because of streaming. Sure, I get my speciality needs met that way more easily, but I like the experience of being in the cinema. So why don't I?
It's not even because I got out of the habit during Covid, because I'd cut back before that.
All of these have obviously had an influence, but I think one of the biggest factors is that a lot of current movies just plain don't interest me enough to see them at the cinema. They're so bland and boring, with barely an A plot, let alone a B plot. When I discovered Bollywood movies last year, I suddenly wanted to watch movies again, because they were inventive and had proper plots. But here's the thing - local cinemas show Indian films now, so I could go and see them on the big screen. And in fact, I've seen more Indian movies at the cinema than non-Indian movies in the last 12 months, but that's not really saying much, as it's still not a lot of movies. Plus, Jawan on it's own accounts for three of those viewings (along with Dunki and Crew).
Reflecting on it, I've decided that I want movie-going to be part of my life again, so I've put together a list of the movies I think I'm going to see this year in the cinema.
June Kalki 2898 AD
July Sarfira Fly me to the Moon Deadpool & Wolverine
August Stree 2 Borderlands
September Wolfs
October Jigra Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video Venom: The Last Dance
November Wicked
December Welcome to the Jungle Karate Kid
So that's my potential list. I may add or remove movies, but some of them are Must See: Venom and Kalki in particular. Kalki looks like an absolutely absurd dumpster fire and I can't wait - I already have tickets. And Venom? Be still my heart. I love those two nerds!
What are you going to see at the cinema this year?

So, this one time back in 2009 or so I went to the mall with my friends in Belo Horizonte and we wanted to watch a movie. So we bought snacks at the mall and went to the movie theatre and the lady at the box office demanded our ID cards to make sure we were all 14 or older. Fair enough.
"I don't have an ID card," I explained in perfect Portuguese, "I'm a tourist. I moved to Canada when I was 10 and I'm just visiting."
The lady wouldn't believe me.
So we had to go find my mom (who was also at the mall) to come and vouch for me.
Except the lady wouldn't believe her either.
"She's my daughter and she's well over 14, you can't just deny her a ticket for no good reason!"
My mom spent a good 10 minutes arguing with the lady, accusing her of being bigoted because I'm short. (I was actually 18 at the time, but I have a back problem that makes me really short).
The lady said she'd only sell me a ticket if my mom bought herself a ticket too.
A couple days later my friends and I were at the mall again and wanted to watch a movie. The same lady was at the ticket booth. When she asked me for my ID I handed her a copy of my Canadian passport.
She stared at it for a solid 30 seconds before quietly going "You're the one I wouldn't sell a ticket to, aren't you?"

Oh, Joy!
Inside Out 2 delivers all the good feels and a box office bonanza
Tumblr media
Inside Out 2 is an easy movie to love. It's funny, charming, poignant and has a lot of heart. The sequel to Disney's original Academy-Award winning juggernaut of 2015 continues the saga of Riley, now a teenager, as she experiences all the complex emotions that come with that pimple-inducing, confusing time of life. As Riley morphs from childhood to adolescence, puberty screams to life like a three alarm fire and we witness her emotions - Joy (voiced beautifully by Amy Poehler), Sadness, Anger, Disgust and Fear - experience the sudden invasive appearance of new angsty emotions: Anxiety, Embarrassment, Envy and Ennui.
Tumblr media
Incoming puberty alert: Anxiety is in the house, with all it's baggage
Riley's transition happens at the most inopportune time, as she tries to prove her worth at hockey camp, prompting a barrage of panicked activity from the new emotions. The fact that her two besties are going to a different high school further complicates matters and a battle royale ensues between the old and new emotions.
Tumblr media
Embarrassment, Anxiety and Envy take charge of Riley's control panel, but Ennui can't be bothered
The film ends on a heart-warming note, reminding us that we're neither all good nor all bad, but a complex mix of good, bad and everything in between, which make us human and whole. Integration, we learn, is the key to health.
Inside Out 2 is smashing box office expectations, keeping Disney high on Joy and easily outpacing Bad Boys: Ride or Die (the fourth installment of the Bad Boy franchise - a little originality, please?) and other films that have been released of late that have kept movie audiences yawning or choosing to stay home.
Let's hope this gorgeously animated feature that warms the heart continues to sell seats and save the theater-going experience.

Just left Dune Part Two.
Damn.
Okay, so, yes, I've read the book and I've had certain particular expectations for this one, which I will politely say are quite thoroughly met.
One major note is that in the book, there is a major timeskip during which Chani and Paul have a son, Jessica's daughter is born, and so forth. This timeskip is not included, which is all well and good because it does not require me to deal with the death of young Leto, or the utter terror that is seeing Alia on-screen (again, damn the 1984 version is weird).
I'm not sure how this movie will look to someone who hasn't read the luck, but luckily for me, I'm taking two guinea pigs with me in a few days who've only seen the first film, so I'll be eager to have their opinions.
I'm just gonna to drop an incredible amount of praise on Austin Butler. This guy was terrifying!
A mild issue with Dune as a property is that, unfortunately, by necessity, you have to confront the question of conveying complex internal monolog and non-verbal dialog. The 1984 film chose extensive voice-over, Part One chose to convey these elements through conversation and scenery. No clue how the sci-fi miniseries does this because I haven't been able to find a copy that won't cost a day's worth of spice-harvesting to watch. Part Two does take the voice-over approach, but in their defense, there is basically no way to convey Alia and Jessica's conversations without it being really, really weird.
I'm glad this adaptation chose to approach the subject of just how weirdly sexual the Bene Gesserit's plans are. Shout-out to Feyd-Rautha's really, really weird gom jabbar scene and the Lady Fenrig's acquisition of the aforementioned na-Baron's DNA.
Yes, Arrakis looks gorgeous, but I love the entire Giedi Prime sequence. I'm reminded heavily of Villeneuve's Arrival, actually, stylistically. It's a small detail but I find myself thinking of those fireworks quite a bit; there's no reason for them to have been so "ink-in-water" rather than strict pyrotechnics, but damn I loved that.
This was, without a doubt, a very, very good follow-up, and a tightly stylized, but worthy adaptation. I'm not saying I'm ready for Dune Messiah, since certain changes to this film will ripple into that one, and force quite a bit of additional changes which might inevitably result in a good film, but a less-accurate adaptation. Villeneuve needs a break, perhaps to work on something a bit smaller. Three back-to-back Dune films cannot be good on a director's sanity, no matter how much love there is for the project (of which it's clear there's plenty).
