Do the hustle!
If I still had myspace I could just make your computers explode into disco when you opened my blog, aren’t you lucky tumblr doesn’t offer that service? Well, it is definitely hustle time here. It seems like I say that every week, but this time I mean it! This is the last week of classes, next week is study (and finish final reports) week, then is on to something new!
I’ve been dealing with piles of data, figures and statistics for my Environmental bio interactions class with a practice presentation tomorrow and actual presentation Friday, and final write up due next week. It was a pretty interesting project but a little rushed. I worked with a partner, and I think we worked well together which always makes things easier. We studied how plants and roots were affected by the presence of decaying roots of the same or mixed species from the same environment (European grassland), and we found significant results is a few species. Some plants preformed better with same species roots and some with mixed species roots. Below ground interactions between plants is really a new and challenging frontier in plant science.
Next term is my interdisciplinary project, and we get to pick our top three choices for topics from a long list and I REALLY hope I get my first choice because it’s exactly what I want to do! The project it titled “Designing effective support systems for non chemical pest control in greenhouses”. I have my fingers crossed! I am also applying to an internship at Monsanto involving insect biocontrol.
But for now, it’s decompression time. Disney music and knitting!

Roobios
This post actually has nothing to do with roobios tea, I just have nothing really to report, and while I was trying to think of something to say my mind just kept coming up with words that are fun to say like roobios, selenium, Darjeeling, expostulate, huitlacoche or alphabetize.
I’ve been helping out with the tomato LED project in the last week, we’ve been sowing and transplanting seedlings for the next round of treatments. There were some germination issues so we had to re-sow a few varieties, but it shouldn’t affect the outcome. In the last couple of days I’ve been helping out with a destructive harvest of tomato plants from a project measuring salinity tolerances, it’s been like an assembly line, my job is to stand at the end of the machine measuring leaf area, and catch the leaves as they come out the tail end in a tray to go in the oven for drying. It’s kind of mind numbing but science is more about repetitive measurements than eureka moments!
It’s been pretty unseasonably cold and rainy (even for the Netherlands!), but luckily I’ve been warm and dry in the greenhouse, and it should only last a couple more days. D and I are planning on spending the day in Utrecht on Thursday to do some fun immigration paperwork and check out a performance art festival.
I almost forgot to mention my guilty pleasures day! On Sunday I made some delicious ribs with veggies, sweet corn, and potato salad. I shared my feast with a friend and she in turn shared a scrumptious berry cheesecake. Throughout the day I binge listened to country music and drank entirely too much Coca Cola! It was downright decadent. I was going to take pictures of the final result, but I was too hungry!
