Deaths Are Up Post-Covid, and So Are Funeral Stocks: Prognosis - Published Aug 19, 2024
The Business of Death Aussies, Americans, and Brits — and no doubt people in many other nations — are dying faster than before the pandemic.
Even though Covid waves are becoming less deadly, thanks mostly to increased immune protection from vaccinations and prior infections, the coronavirus remains a significant killer. And stubbornly high all-cause mortality rates indicate that its direct and indirect effects are helping drive a sustained increase in death and disease around the globe.
It’s depressing news, I know.
With death comes bereavement, and there’s been a lot of that since SARS-CoV-2 began spreading widely in late 2019. The number of officially reported Covid fatalities (7.1 million worldwide) doesn’t fully explain the trend in excess deaths. (Neither do Covid vaccines, since body bags were piling up months before the shots were released, and multiple studies show the immunizations protect against severe illness and death).
There’s no silver lining to the tragic loss of life. But if one group sees an upside, it’s those providing funerals, cremations, and burials. Publicly traded companies handling funerals and related services have handed investors an average 79% return since Jan. 1, 2020 — outpacing the 60% gain in the MSCI All Country World Index, one of the broadest measures of the global equity market.
The US highlights the morbid picture. In the two decades before the pandemic, the number of deaths had been climbing at an average clip of almost 1% a year — reflecting population growth and aging, and the devastating opioid epidemic — for a crude rate in 2019 of 869.7 deaths for every 100,000 Americans.
Covid catapulted the rate well beyond 1,000 in 2020 and 2021 before the rate dropped back to just over 984 in 2022. Last year, there were 927.4 deaths per 100,000 people in the US — almost 12% above the 20-year average — for nearly 3.1 million deaths all up.
The coronavirus directly and indirectly contributed to many of them. For instance, a jump in drug overdoses and alcohol use–related diseases during the pandemic likely added to fatalities from unintentional injuries and chronic liver disease in 2023, according to a study this month. Covid also led to more cardiometabolic disease, and age-adjusted mortality rates for diabetes, heart disease, and stroke were above pre-pandemic levels.
Last month, researchers reported similar findings in Australia, where emergency departments have taken longer to hospitalize patients arriving in ambulances — a sign of health-system stress associated with a greater risk of patients dying up to 30 days after their initial medical encounter.
Mortality rates in England have also stayed persistently high since Covid hit, likely reflecting the direct effects of the illness, pressures on the National Health Service, and disruptions to chronic disease detection and management, researchers said in a study in January.
“The greatest numbers of excess deaths in the acute phase of the pandemic were in older adults,” Jonny Pearson-Stuttard and colleagues wrote. “The pattern now is one of persisting excess deaths, which are most prominent in relative terms in middle-aged and younger adults.”
Almost five years into the pandemic, dodging SARS-CoV-2 still remains one of the best ways to avoid adding to the toll — and the frequency of funerals. —Jason Gale

Electric Cars Suck
There is some irony in how things turned out, right? Like eight years ago or so it was mostly the left who was like: "We need more electro mobility!" And the people on the right were like: "Noooo! We need our gas guzzlers that go VROOOOOM!" And somehow now the people on the right buy their stupid cybertrucks, while the people on the left have in large numbers converted to: "Actually, all cars fucking suck."
And hey, that's me. I am in that story. Because actually, all cars fucking suck!
But let's be a bit more serious: The main issue with cars is not even the CO2, the fine particles, or the microplastics they generate. (Yes, most microplastics in the environment originate with cars!) The main issue is, that we live in a car-centric society, that is so very much inaccessible for anyone who does not have a car.
And let's be honest here: In this regard I am complaining as someone with a lot of things going for me: I live in Germany and I live in a city here. We have actually somewhat working public transport, and even my physically disabled ass is capable of reaching the next super market, pharmacy, doctor's office and library within 5 minutes on foot. Sure, due to a lack of bus drivers (which again is due to a lack of proper payment for said bus drivers) they cut some of the bus lines here, making the time I need to get to the next hospital go up by a good chunk, but... What I am saying is: Hey, I am at least not living in the USA, where it is basically impossible to get around in a lot of places when you have no car, because the infrastructure is just so bloody car-centric.
And that is the reason why cars just suck so darn much. Because they need all that infrastructure that makes it harder for everyone to get around.
And the double issue with that is, that some people will still need cars no matter what, even if we try to improve that. I spoke about it before: Some disabled people will always need cars to get around, because they just do not have an alternative due to a variety of reasons. And some services (like ambulances, fire fighters and so on) will also just need cars. Which taken together means that we need to maintain some infrastructure.
Generally speaking I feel, a lot of folks within the Solarpunk scene do underestimate this issue, too. Especially in concern to the USA, Canada and some other colonizer cities in the global south, that have been created very much with cars in mind.
In Europe, most cities have been created with horse drawn carriages in mind and people who walk on foot. Sure, they have been retrofitted to allow for cars, but that retrofitting can easily be toned down in a way that would allow those cars that are needed to pass through, but allow the areas to be used otherwise. (I mean, we have several cities here were you can still see that the city originally has been build by Romans some 2000 years ago, because the city map features certain Roman city planning styles.) It is not really so hard to turn those cities into 15-minute-cities again.
But in the US? In the US a lot of the cities have always been constructed with the car in mind, and the entire street plan is organized around the car. Lots of wide streets. Lots of parking lots. Lots of other facilities that are needed for cars. Sure, you can reuse some of the space. But that does not negate the fact that everything has this wide sprawl that makes it a lot harder to get around. And that really is a problem if someone tried to make 15-minute-cities here. Because frankly... In some areas there just would not be another way but to just tear it all down to rethink city planning once more.
Like, sure, in the city cores it is not that much of an issue. Turning Manhatten into a 15-minute-city is not the issue. But the wider area of New York city? Eh... And in other cities it is worse, of course.
And yeah, those issues - the stupid infrastructure cars need... It is still the same, no matter whether the car goes VROOOOOOM or BZZZT.

Campaigners claim millions of shoppers are being led to believe the expensive shoes they buy in high-street stores are made in Germany and Italy – when many are actually made by workers on poverty wages in eastern European sweatshops.
The scandal is exposed in a damning investigation into the European shoe industry, which details illegal wages and shocking working conditions in factories turning out footwear for the UK market.
The investigation claims some big brands appear to be using a legal loophole, stamping their products with “Made in Italy” or “Made in Germany” to suggest they are high quality, when they have actually been made by poverty-stricken eastern European workers. The investigation found that footwear workers in Albania were earning as little as 49p an hour including overtime – which is an illegal rate even in such a poor country.
Workers in Macedonia, where the hourly wage was as low as 64p, described being taken to hospital in wheelbarrows after fainting in freezing factories where they had to work with strong chemicals. “If the employer needs to complete, let’s say, an order of 9,000 pairs of shoes, he will put 90 pairs on the belt and even if you want to die, you have to finish it,” a worker told researchers compiling the report, entitled Labour on a Shoestring.
[...]The report looked at production in six low-wage European countries: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Poland, Romania and Slovakia. One in three of the Albanian workers questioned were paid less than the legal minimum wage of £121 a month, even with overtime and bonuses. The report indicated that women were generally worse off. Albanian workers reported having to work on up to 60 pairs of shoes a day.
Female workers in Romania said their husbands had to find low-paid seasonal work in the west to be able to afford wood to burn for heating during the winter. One man said: “Both my wife and I work in this factory. We are glad we could find work, but cannot imagine raising children on two factory wages. Our parents and relatives cannot support us, so we depend on this miserable wage. We wanted to move from the village to the city for a better life, but cannot afford to pay city rent from our salaries.
[...]About 24 billion pairs of shoes are produced worldwide every year, including about 729 million made in Europe. But prices for European shoes are higher: an average Italian pair exports for £39, while an average Chinese pair exports for £3.
In a Macedonian factory supplying the Geox, Deichmann and Bata brands, workers said they were expected to use strong chemicals and complained of rheumatism, back pain, allergies and respiratory problems. They said their skin was often exposed to harmful chemicals because wearing gloves meant lower productivity and even lower wages.
Deichmann said it was not aware of issues with the factory, but was conducting its own investigation and would take any action necessary.
According to the report many workers complained of sweltering conditions in summer and freezing factories in winter. “My hands are freezing, I’m shivering all over and the door to the hall is open all the time,” one worker said. “If I get sick at work and if I have a car, somebody will take me to the hospital. But if I don’t have a car, then I will be taken in a wheelbarrow,” said another.
“In the summer, the heat is unbearable so we have had the ambulance here six times this year because co-workers had heat stroke,” said one Slovak worker.
---
If $50-60 shoes are made by people being paid poverty wages imagine how low the pay is for workers in the global south making cheaper shoes?

"The Rebirth of a New Hope Amidst a Global Crisis"
It has been nearly 700 years since the Black Death caused the death of more than 20 million people and animals alike; a fast-spreading disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. In today’s time, the world is facing a global pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus which took the lives of 6.8 million people in the past 3 years. A variety of modes of transmission have allowed such diseases to spread like wildfire, and the black death through fleas and rats, with new theories, even suggesting novel modes of transmission such as human body lice and infected grain (Glatter & Finkelman, 2021). On the other hand, COVID-19 is known to be transmitted through droplets, close contact, and exchange of bodily fluid; having the characteristics of high virulence of the pathogen, its transmissibility, and the potential for environmental contamination reaffirmed the need for special attention (Sohrabi C, Alsafi Z, et al., 2020).
In 2003, the world was given an extraordinary gift. It could be described as something birthed into the history of mankind way ahead of its time with the promise that previously undetected diseases would be discovered at an early stage with just a prick of a finger. The world was more hopeful than ever– not only did it cover a broad range of illnesses, but it was also going to be the most accessible medical test in history. Determined to change the world, 19-year-old Elizabeth Holmes was known for the invention of Theranos– an efficient method of testing through a wearable patch that continuously tests the blood of the wearer allowing for the admission of the right dose of medicine in real-time. Further, into the development of Theranos, Elizabeth Holmes’ idea changed– blood testing will now be done with a cartridge and a reader system instead of drawing a syringe full of blood from a vein. Theranos, making the traditional way faster and more comfortable for the patients would also allow these tests to be conducted in the comfort of their homes. It was a breakthrough that could have helped the world amidst several global crises.
In the most twisted turn of events, what could have been one of the biggest gifts to humanity turned out to be one of the most elaborate deceptions of all time. The world was at arm’s reach of having something extraordinary in its possession that would greatly contribute to the medical field. It would seem that Elizabeth Holmes conceptualized a grandiose idea that unfortunately ended as that, just an idea. Her words were so powerful that scientists, medical experts, and investors all over the globe dreamt her dream. Until her own researchers exposed the truth that there was no viable technology behind Theranos. This revelation came after several units had already been distributed for use in pharmacies across the United States. When test results repeatedly showed incorrect information, there was no way for Elizabeth Holmes to redeem herself and Theranos from the truth that it was all just a marketing scheme.
The world progresses at a faster rate than anyone would realize, although proven as a scam, Theranos gave hope to people that a breakthrough has been made that would make disease detection to be more efficient. Furthermore, such an idea exists that would allow future scientists and medical experts alike to come up with a similar idea that could be even more efficient compared to Theranos; the world currently has watches that are able to detect the wearer’s pulse and oxygen saturation. In the future, a possibility of a watch that immediately calls the ambulance or a loved one once it detects a heart attack from the wearer, or a phone that has the ability to scan one’s eyes to detect diseases wherein results may be received in just a few hours. Technology continues to evolve as time goes by, phones that are able to scan one’s eyes for symptoms may be one of the future’s scientific or medical breakthroughs that will help the world fight against another global crisis or would just simply help people have a more efficient way of getting tested without having to get in line or wait for the results for hours or days. The only limit to the future’s advancement is one’s own imagination. The Theranos scandal underscores the dangers of deceit and ambition in medicine. By examining this case, readers are urged to scrutinize claims of innovation and advocate for honesty in scientific progress by questioning prevailing narratives and encouraging critical thinking, we can navigate global health challenges with resilience and foresight.
As a former nursing student who has taken Science, Technology, and Society (STS), I'm attracted to this topic for its interdisciplinary relevance. My STS studies and limited knowledge in the field of science provide insights into the dynamics between scientific progress, societal values, and ethics. Through this blog, I aim to apply these insights to real-world scenarios, fostering discussions and promoting ethical innovation.

Sirens Market Research by Key players, Type and Application, Future Growth Forecast 2022 to 2032
In 2022, the global sirens market is expected to be worth US$ 170.1 million. The siren market is expected to reach US$ 244.0 million by 2032, growing at a 3.7% CAGR.
The use of sirens is expected to increase, whether for announcements or on emergency vehicles such as ambulances, police cars, and fire trucks. A siren is a loud warning system that alerts people to potentially dangerous situations as they happen.
Rapidly increasing threats and accidents have resulted in more casualties and missed business opportunities in developing economies. Demand for sirens is expected to rise during the forecast period as more people use security solutions.
As a result of rising threats and accidents in developing economies, the number of victims and lost business opportunities has rapidly increased. Adopting security solutions, such as sirens, is an effective way to deal with these challenges. Long-range sirens are used in mining and industrial applications, whereas motorised sirens are used in home security. Hand-operated sirens are used when there is no power or when a backup is required.
Some additional features of sirens include a solar panel upgrade system to keep the batteries charged and a number of digital communication methods, including Ethernet, satellite, IP, fiber optic and others. Sirens have conformal coatings on their electronics, which help protect them against harsh environments. Some of the systems are made in such a way that they can be expanded or scaled depending on future capabilities.
Omni-directional sirens can be used in areas of high noise levels and those with large population densities as they provide a greater area of coverage. Sirens have external controls with triggers, which can be customized according to needs. The lightening types of sirens include bulb revolving, LED flashing and xenon lamp strobe. The loud speakers in sirens are adopted from latest piezoelectric ceramic technology.

Some updates on this. Plestia has been hit by an airstrike and is currently hospitalized. Another journalist reporting from Gaza, Motaz Azaiza, lost 15 members of his family in an airstrike and was threatened by the IOF to leave Northern Gaza or be killed. Gazans evacuating were bombed, those who were on feet, on ambulances or buses, no distinction whatsoever. In these closing hours before the Israeli ground invasion, keep the Palestinian people in your thoughts.
Palestinians are asking us to follow this toolkit:
Call on congress: Use the Stop Gaza Genocide action toolkit to email and call your Members of Congress;
Find a protest near you: here's two updating lists for global events and US-based events;
Share the call tool;
Stay up to date on Palestine.

Feel free to add more. I have also corrected some wrong information from the original post that said the US and Canada had banned protests. Only Germany and France have done so
Israel has cut water, electricity and food to Palestinians in Gaza. They are buying 10.000 M16 rifles and plan to distribute to civilian settlers in the West Bank to hunt down Palestinians. They're bombing the only way out of Gaza through Egypt, after telling refugees to flee through it, and have threatened the Egyptian government in case they let aid trucks pass through. Entire families, generations, are being wiped out and left to wander the streets hoping they don't get bombed.
Palestinians are using their last minutes of battery to let the world know about their genocide and are being met with a wall of "What about Hamas? What about the beheaded babies? Killing children on either side is bad!" even though the propaganda claims have been debunked over and over again. How cruel is it to ask somebody to condemn themselves before their last words? Or before grieving the loss of their entire families? When there's no such disclaimer to Israelis even though their government has shown over and over genocidal intent? Like who are you even trying to appease? What will your wishy washy statement do against decades of zionist thought infiltrating evangelical and Jewish stablishmemts?
Take action. Israel will fall back if public opinion turns its tide. The UK fell back on its bloody decision to cut aid to Palestine under public scrutiny. The USAmerican empire spends $3.8 billion dollars annually solely on this proxy war while its people suffer under a progressively military regime as well. News outlets are canceling last minute on Palestinian speakers while letting Israelis tell lies unchecked. Palestinian refugees are being targeted in ICE establishments and mosques are already being hounded by the FBI. France and Germany have banned pro-Palestine protests, while Netherlands and the UK have placed restrictions . You have the chance to stop this from turning into repeat of the Iraq war.
I want to do something but there's hardly anything for me to do from Brasil besides spreading the word and not letting these testimonies fall on deaf ears. I'm asking you to do this same ant work from wherever you are.

Helicopters are required for air ambulance services owing to their ability to reach remote areas faster than conventional automobiles and traditional aircraft. They can access distant, inaccessible places, like military bases deep in forests or oil rigs in the middle of the sea, within a short period. The early medical treatment of patients, permitted by quick emergency transport by helicopters, significantly increases the survival rate in serious cases. For example, MH-60 Jayhawks based at USCG Station Kodiak play a crucial role in fishing operations in the remote and treacherous Bering Sea with lifting crewmembers in distress off boats and transporting them to the nearest healthcare centre in Dutch Harbor.
