The Story of Barauda
She was the primary wife of Satuyé, the Garifuna leader, she was his advisor, his companion and his accomplice, she would guide of the women, she was strong-willed, she fought to defend the Garifunas and she is credited because she would always put pressure on Satuyé.
She was the one who claimed that if he did nothing for their lands, she would fight and he could give her his pants and he could wear her skirts. Satuyé could never bear the pressure that was imposed on him by Barauda and because of her, he rose up to defend the Garifuna people, winning every battle by following her suggestions; until he was killed by treason.
‱‱‱

MILPA + X (video installation)
“MILPA + X" is a commission I developed for NATURE AND STATE, being shown at @kunsthallebadenbaden Germany Jul-Oct 2022. The video installation is an edited form of ongoing research and conversations, existing files and their rendered forms as well as statements about water politics, indigenous queer ecology, commodification of resources and indigenous rights. The research starts with Solway, a mining company based in Switzerland accused of polluting Lake Izabal in Guatemala since 2017, for which they blame algae. Lake Izabal is a significant resource, sacred place and heritage for several indigenous communities in east Guatemala including the Afro-Guatemalan Garifuna. Indigenous anthropologist Giovanni Batz critically calls this type of neoliberal megaprojects the “forth invasion” of Guatemala, and the several entanglements in this story, unfolding the mutations of European colonialism in the region. Bodies gather irl as well as social media to protest against these illegal acts and commercial interests for their own rights and resources. While the Maya K'iche' anthropologist Maria Jacinta Xon elucidates the sciences of indigenous women in spaces of resistance. Titled after the Milpa, a sustainable way of cultivating the land in Abya Yala (Central America) which consists of 12 crops instead of one, the work also presents the concept of Milpa as a way of thinking and living with plurality, solidarity and diversity - of crops, gender, sexuality and more. Curated by Cagla Ilk, Misal Adnan Yıldız, Christina Lehnert, sandeep sodhi

Brazil too witnessed the emergence of a people as a result of its Maroon communities:
In Brazil, as with the Caribbean, a full formal ethogenesis, in a very abstract description of a much sharper reality, was the result of the Maroon experience in the major Portuguese colony. As with the Garifuna the Quilombo preserve their own sense of self as a people and their land against the full weight and pressure of the Brazilian state.

The vibrant cultures of Central America are far too often overshadowed by their larger neighbors to the north and south, but what does that mean for a local ethnic group that’s even neglected within its own borders? For the Afro-Indigenous Garífuna people of coastal Honduras, the struggle for recognition is also the struggle to preserve their unique culture into future generations.
The short documentary On Our Land: Being Garífuna in Honduras gives us an on-the-ground look at how this plays out in communities like Trujillo and Limón, where some of the country’s nearly 150,000 Garífuna speakers are concentrated. Through a series of interviews with community members, local politicians, and members of the Garífuna diaspora in the United States, the documentary explores urgent challenges of linguistic survival, institutional representation, and that are affecting the Garífuna.
As the documentary explains, the mixed Garífuna culture formed after a shipwreck left captured Africans stranded on islands of the lesser Antilles, where they intermarried with indigenous Arawak and Caribs. When the British took the islands of St. Vincent and Dominica in the 18th century, the expelled the so-called “Black Caribs” to the island of Roatan off the northern coast of Honduras.
Directed by Neil Dixon, Erica Renee Harding, and James P. Frazier, On Our Land shows how the GarĂfuna have survived and thrived in the face of continued obstacles, all without losing the passion and joy that characterizes them as a people.

Languages of the world
Garifuna (GarĂfuna)
Basic facts
Number of native speakers: 200,000
Recognized minority language: Belize, Guatemala
Language of diaspora: Honduras, Nicaragua, United States, Spain
Script: Latin, 24 letters
Grammatical cases: 0
Linguistic typology: agglutinative, VSO
Language family: Arawakan, Northern, Ta-Arawakan, Kalinago
Number of dialects: -
History
1618 - first known documentation of the language
1975 - first dictionary
2008 - declaration as Masterpiece of the Oral and Intagible Heritage of Humanity
2012 - first movie in Garifuna
Writing system and pronunciation
These are the letters that make up the alphabet: a b ch d e f g h i k l m n ñ o p r s t u ĂŒ w y.
Primary stress is written with an acute accent, while a grave accent marks secondary stress. The former always falls on one of the first two syllables.
Grammar
Nouns are inflected for gender, plural, and possessor. Pluralization is irregular and done using suffixes.
Grammatical gender is also distinguished in independent personal pronouns. Numerals from 3 upwards are based on the vigesimal system.
Verbs are conjugated for tense, aspect, mood, person, and number. Both subject and object are marked in verbs using affixes and particles, like the rest of markers.
Dialects
There are no dialects per se, but parts of Garifuna’s vocabulary differ depending on the gender of the speaker. This is a consequence of the conquest of Arawakan peoples by the Caribs, who were predominantly men that later married Arawakan women. Children from these marriages were raised speaking Arawak by their mothers, but when boys became adults, their fathers taught them Carib.
As a result, boys and men use Carib vocabulary and Arawakan grammar, while girls and women use only Arawak words.

Note
Racism towards black is the same in Brazil, Mexico, Columbia, Panama, Puerto Rico, Argentina etc. Dark skin is frowned upon and looked at as less desirable. Afro-Latina's are legitimately called an embarrassment to the Latin race. If you don't look like Selena, Shakira, J.Lo, Evelyn Lozada, Thalia or Selena Gomez you are not accepted as a Latina. We have our racism here, it's not just over there in the US.
EXACTLY! Brazil has the 2nd largest population of Black ppl after Africa and you do not see them especially if they’re dark skin women. The Garifuna ppl of Honduras aren’t even allowed to say that they’re Garifuna let alone Black on the freaking census. The anti blackness and misogynoir of Latin America is insane. Racism needs to be declared as a national crisis or whatever cuz it’s really stopping ppl from being able to live.

Note
Milo for the headcanons, pls
He teaches World History and Ancient Literature.
When he started working at DU, Professor Carl Fredricksen kind of took him under his wing and became a mentor of sorts.
He knows about ten different languages and dialects, including ancient Greek, Latin, Phoenician, and Hebrew.
His wife Kida knows about fifteen different languages and dialects. She works as a translator for a prestigious law firm.
The man’s a born romantic. He’ll spend weeks planning things to do with his wife. Even if they don’t often turn out the way he intended, he enjoys it all.
He likes to show her off to people and brag on her behalf. “Students, this amazing woman right here is my wife Kida.” “Professor Porter, have you met my wife?” “She knows Mandarin, Sanskrit, Garifuna...” It’s incredibly sweet.
He tends to get carried away sometimes during lectures, acting things out or just getting caught up in emotion and excitement. The students think it’s adorable.
He’s, surprisingly, one of the most popular teachers in the school. Professor Jafar will say that’s not a good measuring stick for how good a college professor is, “... and anyway, it’s probably because you’re too soft on them. They think they can just walk all over you.” (sour grapes much?)
He’s developed an unusual and very unexpected comraderie with swim coach Maui. They don’t understand how it works either.
He’s got a kind of brother-sister relationship with Art Professor Jane Porter-Greystroke, and sometimes goes to her for advice regarding women, though she keeps pointing out that he’s got really good instincts when it comes to his wife’s thoughts and feelings.
His office is an absolute mess. “A pile for everything, and everything in its pile.” Carl once described it. His filing system is... well, only he can truly understand it. For example, grades for the Ancient Egypt unit are in a file marked “Sphinx (not Greek).” Student essays on Oedipus Rex and Antigone are filed under “Sphinx (Greek one).”
Driving makes him nervous. Even though he’s got a license, he’d much rather ride the bus or hire an Uber driver (to be fair, the traffic in Anaheim doesn’t make it easy).
He has trouble watching historical films or tv shows. The inaccuracies drive him crazy.
He remembers everyone’s birthday, students and faculty members alike, and always gives them a card.
He’s a huge cat nerd. He and Kida own at least three.
He gets sea-sick really easily. Even just watching sailboats makes him a little queasy by association.
If angry, he’s not afraid to give someone a piece of his mind, as Director Hook once learned the hard way.
This isn’t known outside their most intimate circle of friends, but he and Kida are currently trying to have kids. They’re in no rush. It’ll happen in its own, good time.
