Fake Ad: Galactic Melodies
Tumblr media
A couple weeks ago, I reached out to @thecitybee to ask if I could use her work in a magazine project about transnationalism in Muslim music that I'd been working on with two other people for a class on Islamic pop music. Bee agreed to let me use her work so long as I gave her credit in my bibliography and included one of her socials in the finished product. So...voila! Above is the fake ad I created for a concert featuring Spock and Uhura and below is @thecitybee's original artwork, which was commissioned by the author of the fic that inspired it, @jolaosongoni:
Tumblr media
When I saw this piece and recognized the kora in Uhura's lap, I flipped out. I love every chance we get to see Spock and Uhura play or listen to music together in TOS and SNW and this immediately sparked a lot of joy.
What I love most about this piece is that it places Uhura in a very specific cultural, familial and musical context, something that the Star Trek franchise itself hasn't ever really done. The kora is a West African string instrument widely played by griot families. Griots are musicians, storytellers and poets who preserve genealogies, oral histories and traditions of their peoples. The kora allows some griots to preserve these cultural histories through music and praise singing. While the practice of playing the kora has historically been passed down through patrilineal lines, there are women who play kora like Gambian griot musician Sona Jobarteh, who was featured on the cover of my group's magazine (she's a really cool musician, I highly recommend checking out her work). Star Trek doesn't have a great track record of giving their characters of color distinct cultural backgrounds beyond having them be played by actors of color (and sometimes, they don't even do that). Having Uhura be a kora player makes her an active participant in and carrier of West African history and culture, a living legacy of a particular and greatly honored line of musicianship. It intentionally creates her as a West African woman, or at least as a direct descendant of West African kora players and solidifies the cultural importance of kora playing beyond the past, present and into the 23rd century, celebrating Uhura's Blackness and African identity as things that are inextricable from her character.
Thank you so much to @thecitybee for agreeing to let me include your work in my own! You made a fellow trekkie and huge music nerd very happy :)
For anyone who's curious, here is a link to Sona Jobarteh's website:

Day 4 @tolkienofcolourweek: Music
I realised after starting that Tinfang was not a woman in the text. However my justification is that no people ever saw Tinfang so no one could know for certain.

it is BANDCAMP FRIDAY
Once again, Bandcamp Friday is upon us! Despite the change in ownership, Bandcamp remains committed to holding Bandcamp Friday 6 times in 2024 - so if you have any indie music you've been eyeing, get it now!
Some albums I love that deserve more love:
Badinyaa Kumoo by Sona Jobarteh. Jobarteh is a Gambian musician from a traditional griot family, and her music that centers the kora is excellent.
Aswât by Djazia Satour. Jazzy and poppy French/Algerian fusion.
The Quiet Has Something To Tell You by Joelle Moushati. I love this one so much. It's so ethereal, dreamy, and melancholy.
Agnes by Jane Bruckner. Soft, soothing, peaceful ambient. I like to fall asleep to this one.
Of Timelessness and Space by Lillie Blue. Sweet, fun, and evocative instrumentals.
Trinity by Luer Verte. Synthwave single of all time.
and the music I bought today:
Beacon by Jane Bruckner. Even more ambient musical soundscapes.
Giver Taker by Anjimile. A mournful, thoughtful, reflective, ultimately hopeful meditation on identity, loss, being trans, and making yourself.
The single Hearts and the "bot-quadrilogy" Gigabot, Terrabot, Megabot, Exabot by Waveshaper. MORE SYNTHWAVE.

Arthur Kirkland was thinking about Francis Bonnefoy again. Francis was a Lumpy Snail with Bricked up Dick and Pale Frontal lobe.
Arthur walked over to the window and reflected on his Wet surroundings. He had always hated Stinky Bedroom with its prickly, petite Pillows. It was a place that encouraged his tendency to feel Pity.
Then he saw something in the distance, or rather someone. It was the a Lumpy figure of Francis Bonnefoy.
Arthur gulped. He glanced at his own reflection. He was an Evil, Eyebrows, Tea drinker with Frail Dick and Twinkish Frontal lobe. His friends saw him as a gifted, gigantic Gnome. Once, he had even brought a silky Arthur Kirkland back from the brink of death.
But not even an Evil person who had once brought a silky Arthur Kirkland back from the brink of death, was prepared for what Francis had in store today.
The Sleet rained like Homicidal Gambian pouch rat, making Arthur Bashful. Arthur grabbed a Slimy Banana that had been strewn nearby; he massaged it with his fingers.
As Arthur stepped outside and Francis came closer, he could see the slippery glint in his eye.
"Look Arthur," growled Francis, with a Greasy glare that reminded Arthur of Lumpy Elephant. "I hate you and I want Dick. You owe me 5274 Pounds."
Arthur looked back, even more Bashful and still fingering the Slimy Banana. "Francis, you bloody cheeky moron stupid face," he replied.
They looked at each other with Despair feelings, like two grieving, gleaming Goose Murdering at a very Ill Funeral, which had Reggae music playing in the background and two Elongated uncles Loving to the beat.
Suddenly, Francis lunged forward and tried to punch Arthur in the face. Quickly, Arthur grabbed the Slimy Banana and brought it down on Francis's skull.
Francis's Bricked up Dick trembled and his Pale Frontal lobe wobbled. He looked Grief, his wallet raw like a narrow, nutritious Needoh Nice Cube.
Then he let out an agonising groan and collapsed onto the ground. Moments later Francis Bonnefoy was dead.
Arthur Kirkland went back inside and made himself a nice cup of Tea.

If you like this, visit http://koramusic.net to see Alhaji Bai Konte's grandsons continuing the family tradition - the Great Gambian Griots kora duet videos - from the grandsons of Alhaji Bai Konteh!  16mm film by Oliver Franklin and Marc Pevar.  "Alhaji Bai Konte," depicts a day-in-the-life of the now-deceased Gambian Mandinka kora virtuoso, Alhaji Bai Konte, shot on location in Brikama, Gambia (plus one scene in Dakar, Senegal), West Africa, and narrated by world-famous bluesman Taj Mahal.  The film was co-produced by Oliver Franklin and Marc Pevar, and filmed by Harold Yates and Lenore French and edited by Rob Wallace. Alhaji Bai Konte's son, Dembo Konte, accompanies in the performance, and various family members and friends make cameo appearances. His wife, Nafi Kouyate, appears in the final scene, praying. Kora is a 21-stringed harp unique to the Mandinka, played by Griots who are oral historians as well as musicians. This group of Mandinka preserve and propagate genealogical and historical information through song and story, and are a source of immense pride and identity to the Mandinka people. Alhaji Bai Konte was the first griot to introduce the kora widely throughout North America, where he toured major folk, jazz and blues festivals, gave private concerts and mingled with many professional musicians.  His tours continued for seven years in the 1970's, often accompanied by Dembo Konte and Malamini Jobarteh, whose excellent musical skills were also a delight to their audiences. Alhaji Bai Konte appeared on TV and radio many times, most famously on the PBS TV series Jump Street, narrated by Oscar Brown Jr., and also on a historic NPR radio show recorded in Vermont, where he shared the stage with Elizabeth Cotton and Taj Mahal. That radio show aired for many years, with these iconic musicians representing the roots from Africa, the adaptation of kora picking styles to guitar, and the synthesis of the two fused into the modern era.  Both Elizabeth Cotton and Taj Mahal acknowledged that their music and instrumental techniques arose from the Kora, which Pete Seeger also credited as the source of blues and Jazz. Alhaji Bai Konte performed with many musicians including: Taj Mahal, Elizabeth Cotton, The Paul Winter Consort, Tony Bird, Pete Seeger, David Amram and many other musicians.  Alhaji Bai Konte's performances and media appearances opened the door to the American music market for the kora musicians who followed in his footsteps, and opened the minds of many Americans and musicians world-wide to the classical beauty of the kora, Gambian musicianship, the Griot culture, and the sophistication if this musical tradition that extends in time back 800 years to the era of the Mali Empire. - Marc Pevar

prev already included Anjimile who I 100% recommend but fr
also love love love Sona Jobarteh, a Gambian singer and griot
and Reiyo the Giant does creative alternative/R&B that deserves more love
and Benin-French international star Angelique Kidjo who is prolific with soaring, multilingual, complexly orchestrated, both playful and impactful music
(she also has a truly fantastic bilingual rendition of the opening song to Lion King 2 and she OWNS it)
like black people are present in every single fucking genre and scene and popularized and straight up created several but people are so fucking hell bent on finding every possible excuse to not engage with their music because its easier than trying to confront their own racism. like okay well if its truly just a disinterest in most rap music then surely you listen to black artists in other genres right? who am i fucking kidding. of course you dont.
