thinking about humans in different parts of the world all agreeing that having an Event just to display shiny trinkets is the way to go (or as @permanentlyspacedout so eloquently put it, crow brain!)
And not just agreeing that displaying trinkets is neat, but that the displays should be tiered.
case in point: in the toasty regions of South India, we do the bommala koluvu
(apologies for the blurred images; they're from wiki and here)
and of course, there's the probably better known tiers of Christmas trees (flicked this from here):
(my mum argues that nativity scene dioramas are more akin to bommala koluvus than the tree, but I'm too hung up on the (admittedly flimsy) tiered connection so shushhh)
And then a lil digging on the interwebs led to me discovering Japan's Hinamatsuri: (Image source)
(look at that! steps again!)
something something humans across regions are connected by the apparently innate urge of going "dolls on steps tho".
#india and japan: đ¤dolls on steps are neat#or something. idk.#these displays ARE neat tho#and so much fun to make#(*given the right assistance and equally enthusiastic company that is)#i need the world to know that the bommala koluvu we made this year has moving parts too#including a working fountain in a pond at the bottom of a hill :]#we make them for the festival of sankranti (which is going on rn) and it's great :)#but also realising this is kinda similar to nativity scenes/christmas trees was an Experience#and then discovering that Japan has a similar steps display?#that was a delightful surprise#I'd love to hear of any other such traditions đ#placeholder tag

Right Swimming Pool Construction Company to Revamp Your Outdoor Space
Dive into Your Dream Oasis: Choosing the Right Swimming Pool Construction Company to Revamp Your Outdoor Space
Summer is just around the corner, and you know what that means: itâs time to turn your backyard into a paradise! If youâre daydreaming about lazy afternoons by the pool or hosting epic barbecue parties, the first step is finding the right swimming pool construction company. Letâs dive into how to revamp your outdoor space and make your aquatic dreams come true!
Why Invest in a Pool?
Splashing Into Leisure
Letâs face it: a swimming pool is more than just a water-filled hole in your backyard. Itâs a lifestyle upgrade! Imagine the convenience of a refreshing dip just steps away from your living room. Not only does a pool provide a perfect escape from the summer heat, but it also becomes a gathering spot for family and friends. Whether youâre floating with a drink or having a lively pool party, your home transforms into the ultimate summer hangout.
Moreover, a pool opens the door to countless activities. From swimming laps to hosting poolside movie nights, the options are endless. You can even create a workout routine that incorporates water aerobics, making exercise feel less like a chore and more like fun.
Boosting Your Property Value
Besides the fun factor, investing in a pool can significantly increase your property value. In many neighborhoods, homes with swimming pools sell faster and at higher prices. So, while youâre enjoying those sunny days, youâre also making a smart financial decision. Plus, think of the bragging rights! âOh, you have a pool? Thatâs nice. Have you seen mine?â
A well-constructed pool not only enhances your lifestyle but also makes your home more attractive to potential buyers. Real estate experts often highlight pools as a desirable feature that sets a home apart in the market.
Choosing the Right Swimming Pool Construction Company
When it comes to finding the right swimming pool construction company, doing your homework is essential. Start by checking online reviews and testimonials. What are previous customers saying about their experience? A reputable swimming pool construction company in India will have a solid portfolio of projects and a list of satisfied clients. Take the time to browse through photos of their completed pools to gauge their style and quality.
Additionally, donât hesitate to visit completed projects if possible. This can give you a real sense of the companyâs craftsmanship and the types of pools they excel at building. Many contractors are more than happy to show off their work, especially if it leads to more business!
Ask for Recommendations
Donât forget the power of personal connections! Ask friends, family, or neighbors for recommendations. If someone has a pool you admire, inquire about who built it. Often, personal experiences can lead you to reputable contractors who might not pop up in your online searches. Once you have a shortlist, itâs time to reach out for consultations.
When speaking with potential contractors, ask about their experience, project timelines, and any warranties they offer. This not only helps you gauge their professionalism but also sets clear expectations for your own project.
Initial Consultations: What to Expect
Getting Down to Business
During your initial consultation with a swimming pool construction company, be prepared to discuss your vision. This is where your ideas start to take shape! Share your dreams, preferences, and budget. A good contractor will listen attentively and offer insights based on their expertise. They may suggest different styles â like infinity pools, lap pools, or family-friendly designs â with their unique features.
Donât be afraid to dream big! If you want a waterfall, a swim-up bar, or even a hot tub, let them know. The more details you provide, the better they can tailor the design to suit your desires.
Design and Planning
After discussing your ideas, the company will create a design plan tailored to your space and preferences. They should provide you with detailed drawings and possibly 3D renderings to help you visualize the project. This stage is crucial because it sets the tone for your entire backyard revamp. Donât hesitate to ask questions or request modifications; after all, this is your dream!
Also, consider the landscaping and surrounding features at this stage. Think about how you want to integrate the pool into your existing outdoor space. Will you add a deck, patio, or outdoor kitchen? These elements can enhance the overall design and functionality of your backyard.
Navigating the Permitting Process
Getting Your Ducks in a Row
Once youâve settled on a design, itâs time to tackle the permitting process. Depending on where you live, local regulations may require permits for pool construction. A reputable swimming pool construction company will handle this for you, ensuring all necessary permits are acquired before breaking ground. This is one of the many reasons it pays to work with professionals â they know the ins and outs of local laws.
This phase might take some time, so patience is key. While waiting for permits, consider finalizing your landscaping and accessory choices. This way, you can hit the ground running once construction begins!
Staying Informed
While the construction team is responsible for the permits, itâs still good to stay informed. Ask your contractor for a timeline of the permitting process and when you can expect to begin construction. Having clear communication helps you avoid any nasty surprises and keeps you in the loop throughout the entire project.
Ask about any inspections that may be required during the construction phase. Knowing what to expect can help you plan accordingly and avoid delays.
The Construction Phase: What to Expect
Breaking Ground
Now, the exciting part begins â construction! Watch as your dream pool starts to take shape right in your backyard. This phase involves excavation, which may seem daunting, but itâs all part of the process. You might be surprised at how quickly the work progresses. Keep an open mind and enjoy the transformation taking place.
You might see heavy machinery and construction crews bustling around during this time. While it can be chaotic, seeing your vision come to life is incredibly rewarding. You may also want to consider how the construction will impact your daily routine. Communicate with your contractor about any concerns you have.
Staying Engaged
During construction, stay engaged with your swimming pool construction company. Regular check-ins can help ensure everything is going smoothly. If you have any concerns or want to make adjustments, communicate openly. Remember, this is a collaboration, and your input is valuable throughout the process!
Additionally, be prepared for some unexpected challenges. Weather can be unpredictable, and other factors may arise that affect the timeline. Flexibility and patience will go a long way during this phase.
Adding Finishing Touches
Choosing the Right Materials
As the construction wraps up, itâs time to select the finishing touches. Your contractor will guide you through choosing tiles, coping, and other materials that fit your vision. Opt for colors and textures that complement your home and outdoor space. This is where your personality shines through, so take your time making these decisions.
When selecting materials, consider not only aesthetics but also durability. High-quality materials will stand the test of time and reduce maintenance needs down the road. Donât hesitate to ask your contractor for recommendations based on your climate and usage.
Landscaping and Accessories
Donât forget about landscaping! Surrounding your pool with lush greenery, flowers, or decorative stones can create a picturesque setting. Consider adding accessories like loungers, umbrellas, and outdoor lighting to enhance the overall atmosphere. Your pool area should reflect your style and be a welcoming retreat for guests.
Also, think about creating different zones in your backyard. A lounge area with seating, a dining space, and maybe even a fire pit can make your outdoor space incredibly versatile. This way, you can accommodate various activities and gatherings.
Maintenance Matters
Keeping Your Pool in Shape
Congratulations! Your pool is finally complete, and youâre ready to dive in. But wait â pool ownership comes with responsibilities. Regular maintenance is key to keeping your pool sparkling and enjoyable. Depending on your needs, you can choose to handle maintenance yourself or hire a professional service.
Routine maintenance tasks include skimming leaves, checking water levels, and balancing chemicals. Understanding these basics can empower you as a pool owner and ensure youâre providing a safe environment for swimmers.
Creating a Routine
Establish a maintenance routine that works for you. This might include weekly cleaning, chemical balancing, and occasional equipment checks. Keeping your pool well-maintained not only ensures a pleasant swimming experience but also prolongs the life of your investment.
Consider investing in automated cleaning equipment or smart technology to help streamline your maintenance tasks. With the right tools, keeping your pool in shape can be more manageable and less time-consuming.
Embrace Your New Outdoor Space
Making Memories
With your stunning new pool in place, itâs time to enjoy it! Host pool parties, celebrate birthdays, or simply relax with a good book by the water. Your backyard is now an extension of your home â a place for laughter, relaxation, and unforgettable memories.
Incorporate themed events to make the most of your pool area. For example, you could host a tropical luau, complete with tiki torches and fruity cocktails. Such gatherings can create lasting memories and bring friends and family closer together.
Stay Inspired
As you spend time in your revamped outdoor space, stay inspired! Consider future projects or enhancements, like adding a hot tub, a gazebo, or even outdoor kitchen facilities. The possibilities are endless, and the beauty of a pool is that itâs just the beginning of your outdoor adventures.
Regularly refresh your space with new accessories or seasonal decorations to keep the area feeling fresh and inviting. This way, your backyard will always feel like a special retreat.
Final Thoughts
Transforming your backyard with a pool is an exciting journey that requires the right swimming pool construction company. From design and construction to maintenance and enjoyment, every step contributes to creating your dream oasis. So, take the plunge this summer â revamp your outdoor space, and make it a place where memories are made!

What it meant to "do geology" in Hutton's time was to apply lessons of textual hermeneutics usually reserved for scripture [...] to the landscape. Geology was itself textual. Rocks were marks made by invisible processes that could be deciphered. Doing geology was a kind of reading, then, which existed in a dialectical relationship with writing. In The Theory of the Earth from 1788, Hutton wrote a new history of the earth as a [...] system [...]. Only a few kilometers away from Huttonâs unconformity [the geological site at Isle of Arran in Scotland that inspired his writing], [...] stands the remains of the Shell bitumen refinery [closed since 1986] as it sinks into the Atlantic Ocean. [...] As Hutton thought, being in a place is a hermeneutic practice. [...] [T]he Shell refinery at Ardrossan is a ruin of that machine, one whose great material derangements have defined the world since Hutton. [...]
The Shell Transport and Trading Company [now the well-known global oil company] was created in the Netherlands East Indies in 1897. The companyâs first oil wells and refineries were in east Borneo [...]. The oil was taken by puncturing wells into subterranean deposits of a Bornean or Sumatran landscape, and then transported into an ever-expanding global network of oil depots at ports [...] at Singapore, then Chennai, and through the Suez Canal and into the Mediterranean. [...] The oil in these networks were Bornean and Sumatran landscapes on the move. Combustion engines burnt those landscapes. Machinery was lubricated by them. They illuminated the night as candlelight. [...] The Dutch East Indies was the new land of untapped promise in that multi-polar world of capitalist competition. British and Dutch colonial prospectors scoured the forests, rivers, and coasts of Borneo [...]. Marcus Samuel, the British founder of the Shell Transport and Trading Company, as his biographer [...] put it, was âmesmerized by oil, and by the vision of commanding oil all along the line from production to distribution, from the bowels of the earth to the laps of the Orient.â [...]
---
Shell emerged from a Victorian era fascination with shells.
In the 1830s, Marcus Samuel Sr. created a seashell import business in Houndsditch, London. The shells were used for decorating the covers of curio boxes. Sometimes, the boxes also contained miniature sculptures, also made from shells, of food and foliage, hybridizing oceanic and terrestrial life forms. Wealthy shell enthusiasts would sometimes apply shells to grottos attached to their houses. As British merchant vessels expanded into east Asia after the dissolution of the East India Companyâs monopoly on trade in 1833, and the establishment of ports at Singapore and Hong Kong in 1824 and 1842, the import of exotic shells expanded.
Seashells from east Asia represented the oceanic expanse of British imperialism and a way to bring distant places near, not only the horizontal networks of the empire but also its oceanic depths.
---
The fashion for shells was also about telling new histories. The presence of shells, the pecten, or scallop, was a familiar bivalve icon in cultures on the northern edge of the Mediterranean. Aphrodite, for example, was said to have emerged from a scallop shell. Minerva was associated with scallops. Niches in public buildings and fountains in the Roman empire often contained scallop motifs. St. James, the patron saint of Spain, was represented by a scallop shell [...]. The pecten motif circulated throughout medieval European coats of arms, even in Britain. In 1898, when the Gallery of Palaeontology, Comparative Anatomy, and Anthropology was opened in Parisâs Museum of Natural History - only two years after the first test well was drilled in Borneo at the Black Spot - the buildingâs architect, Ferdinand Dutert, ornamented the entrance with pecten shell reliefs. In effect, Dutert designed the building so that one entered through scallop shells and into the galleries where George Cuvierâs vision of the evolution of life forms was displayed [...]. But it was also a symbol for the transition between an aquatic form of life and terrestrial animals. Perhaps it is apposite that the scallop is structured by a hinge which allows its two valves to rotate. [...] Pectens also thrive in the between space of shallow coastal waters that connects land with the depths of the ocean. [...] They flourish in architectural imagery, in the mind, and as the logo of one of the largest ever fossil fuel companies. [...]
---
In the 1890s, Marcus Samuel Jr. transitioned from his fatherâs business selling imported seashells to petroleum.
When he adopted the name Shell Transport and Trading Company in 1897, Samuel would likely have known that the natural history of bivalves was entwined with the natural history of fossil fuels. Bivalves underwent an impressive period of diversification in the Carboniferous period, a period that was first named by William Conybeare and William Phillips in 1822 to identify coal bearing strata. In other words, the same period in earthâs history that produced the Black Spot that Samuelâs engineers were seeking to extract from Dayak land was also the period that produced the pecten shells that he named his company after. Even the black fossilized leaves that miners regularly encountered in coal seams sometimes contained fossilized bivalve shells.
The Shell logo was a materialized cosmology, or [...] a cosmogram.
Cosmograms are objects that attempt to represent the order of the cosmos; they are snapshots of what is. The pectenâs effectiveness as a cosmogram was its pivot, to hinge, between spaces and times: it brought the deep history of the earth into the present; the Black Spot with Mediterranean imaginaries of the bivalve; the subterranean space of liquid oil with the surface. The history of the earth was made legible as an energetic, even a pyrotechnical force. The pecten represented fire, illumination, and certainly, power. [...] If coal required tunnelling, smashing, and breaking the ground, petroleum was piped liquid that streamed through a drilled hole. [...] In 1899, Samuel presented a paper to the Society of Arts in which he outlined his vision of âliquid fuel.â [...] Ardrossan is a ruin of that fantasy of a free flowing fossil fuel world. [...] At Ardrossan, that liquid cosmology is disintegrating.

About Natlan characters
People who somehow twist the situation with Natlan characters and call people wanting more diverse and accurate characters racist blow my mind, so here's me answering some of the most common arguments I see.
"They're Chinese devs! Chinese prefer light skin tones"
My brother in Christ, this is called colorism (prejudice or discrimination against individuals with a dark skin tone, typically among people of the same ethnic or racial group). Yes, it is common in China. No, it isn't good or excusable. Colorism being such a thing in China explains why it is like this, it doesn't excuse the devs. Plus... you realize it's not like all Chinese people have such light skin tones, right? The problem of colorism touches various Chinese people themselves, it's all about these unachievable beauty standards. Colorism isn't a preference, it's a prejudice.
"Chinese players pay the most money and they prefer light skin tones"
i already explained why colorism isn't an excuse. Again, what you say is true but it only puts things into a perspective, it doesn't make the situation good. Plus not gonna lie, the whole idea that people other than the CN server cannot express their opinions is ridiculous to me. All players are consumers. All players add to the success of the game, whether with their own money or being free advertisement to their friends. Taking the money of all your players but only opinions of some of them is condescending and money-hungry. You don't want opinions of people from other regions - don't even have servers in them in the first place.
"They'll lose money if they make more playable characters with dark skin tones"
If they'll make them as weak as Xinyan, Dehya or Candace - yeah, people won't roll for them. If they were good in gameplay and meta, however - I'm sure people would use money to get them. And really, the argument about losing some money by a company that is worth literal billions? There are characters with light skin tones that don't sell too well, and somehow Hoyoverse didn't go bankrupt because of one or two worse banners, shocking. Lastly, do you seriously think some CEOs' paychecks are more important than people's cultures?
"All you care about is skin color, you racist!"
Nah, I care about good representation. The ones who don't allow a few darker characters are the racist and/or colorist ones.
"You want all characters to be dark, but there are people from these regions in real life who have light skin tones too, you racist!"
Yes, people from these regions have different skin tones. That's the exact reason why there should be characters that have light skin tones, a little darker skin tones, even darker skin tones... Who said we cannot have a diverse cast? Who said adding a few characters with dark(er) skin tones means removing characters with light skin tones? How does their existence invide your personal space?
"There is no Mesoamerica/Egypt/India/insert-here-another-region-or-country in Genshin, they don't have to be accurate"
Oh yes, the "have cake and eat it" argument. So they take very clear inspirations from the real world (including calling characters after deities) but in this one very specific, heavily prejudiced aspect they choose not to, you say? And they can be very faithful to the culture they take inspirations from, especially if it is their own culture, but then they act carelessly with other ones, you say? And Genshin regions inspired by Asian and European regions are based each on one country (Mondstadt - Germany, Liyue - China, Inazuma - Japan, Fountaine - France, Shneznaya - Russia) but then they merge a few different cultures with Sumeru and Natlan, you say? Interesting. Totally not because of orientalism and colorism, not at all.
"They don't want to/cannot make these characters more accurate"
Then don't make regions in your game based on specific, existing in real life regions or countries. You cannot or don't want to do them justice? Don't use them.
"You said color doesn't matter when they made The Little Mermaid black, heheh"
First of all, your memeing skills suck, I've seen one and the same unoriginal, boommer-core meme like twenty times during my small research, do better. Second, you're fighting with an enemy you've imagined. I, for example, think about the "color doesn't matter" argument as wishful thinking because, unfortunately, we live in a world where it has mattered for a long time. You create your own enemy (because let's be real, you use we vs. they thinking here) and fight with this imagination instead of actually discussing. Third, you use a manipulative technique in which you make the discussion unproductive by making it about a way bigger issue instead of the one it should be centered on: Natlan (and Sumeru) characters. Fourth, there are various historical reasons why blind casting sometimes works and sometimes not, but that's a discussion for a different time. Fifth, let's be real, you haven't watched the new Little Mermaid anyway.
"Jeez, there should just be a Chinese server/there should only be Asian servers"
Depending on who writes this argument, it's either racist, xenophopic or oikophobic because of assumption people of certain origins, nationality, race or ethinicity cause a problem as a result of their origins, nationality, race or ethinicity. And it's not like Hoyoverse had to make these servers. They wanted to. Don't act like they're victims when they literally chose to have money of players from non-Asian regions. And don't act like all people from certain servers think the same.
"Characters from desert regions are/will be darker, these characters are from (a) forest region(s)"
We certainly don't live on the same planet, cause where I live people don't get a little darker only when they live in a desert area. Look at some tribes from the Amazon Rainforest, just as an example. And even look at NPCs in Sumeru - why this flawed logic that characters living in the forest are light-skinned is applicable only to the playable characters? NPCs have more varied skin tones than the playable characters. Because colorism.
tl;dr Don't act like it's anything else than a corporation being money-hungry and colorist.

Artwork I did depicting Ursula Mires from Laughingnell's amazing fanfic WINTER OF WIDOWS, now on A03 and Spacebattles.
When she awoke to a new life in Westeros, Ursula Mires nearly did the smart thing. Only a year away from becoming sworn to the Faith as a septa and being free to live in relative comfort and safety in one of the more prestigious Reach cloisters, she was content with her lot in life. Her advice, slowly fed to her father over many years, had enabled her family to survive the Dance and rise in station. House Mires had its legacy secured, until tragedy struck early that winter. Now Ursula is heir to a floundering House she does not want, in a war-torn land that she must drag out of the mud. Many ladies are in her position in what maesters would later call âthe winter of widowsâ.
Only Ursula knows what is coming next, and sheâs not sure if her house will survive it.
The artwork was done on Canson hot press watercolor paper, with India ink, gouache, watercolor from a Binney & Smith set from the 1940s, and fountain pen ink (specifically Lichen and Riviera from the Birmingham pen company).

"The largest, quickest, and most devastating pandemic in all of human history was the influenza epidemic whose first of three waves began in Kansas in March 1918, and recurred in ever widening and more mortal forms in the autumn and the winter. Yet, this epidemic is distinguished from others by a second reason, the historical amnesia - a virtual blackout of memory - that has greeted it in subsequent generations. Its historian summarizes: "Nothing else - no infection, no war, no famine - has ever killed so many in as short a period. And yet it has never inspired awe."
Between 22 and 30 million people were killed in a year. Half a million of these were in the United States whose troop-ships carrying young men to the Western Front of Europe during World War I, in conditions that were floating test tubes of the virus, brought the 'flu to France, then Germany, England, and Russia, and from the European continent the virus was transmitted along the sea-lanes of European imperialism to Latin America, to West Africa, to India (where 12 million died), to China, Japan, and the Pacific islands. More were killed by the epidemic than were killed by the Civil War or World War I Which Robert Graves called "the Sausage Machine, because it was fed with men, churned out corpses, and remained firmly screwed in place."
The age specific mortality curve of the epidemic was shaped more like a 'W' than a 'U' which is to say that those in the strong middle years of life were as affected, and more so, than the very young or very old. This characteristic deeply worried the official macroparasitic institutions which relied on those in their middle years to produce, to reproduce, and to fight. To them, not so much life, as production and reproduction was the worry. Henry Cabot Lodge was concerned about the productivity of munitions plants. In March 1,000 workers at the Ford Motor Company fell sick. The number of rivets driven per day at the Philadelphia shipyards fell at a rate that alarmed the war producers. The equivalent of two combat divisions of the AEF, or the American Expeditionary Force ("Ass End First"), were incapacitated in France. 40% of U.S. Navy personnel were affected. 37 life insurance companies omitted or reduced their annual stock dividends. The macroparasites and the microparasite were thus in mortal competition for the bodies of the healthy ones in middle life, and that for another reason too. As an air-borne infection, "the rich died as readily as the poor."
(...)
500 were arrested in New York on "Spitless Sunday." Large gatherings were prohibited. Telephone booths were padlocked. Public water fountains were closed. In San Francisco face masks were required to be worn. Cash tellers were equipped with finger bowls. A municipal ordinance of Prescott, Arizona, adopted a suggestion from an obscure newspaper by the Fascist, Benito Mussolini, making it a crime to shake hands. The Army Surgeon General reported that "civilization could easily disappear from the earth."
The middle point of the 'W' grew and as a result the famous 'Lost Generation' of despairing American writers came into being, and yet with the exception of Katherine Anne Porter none wrote about the 'flu epidemic. Was this massive, social, denial? Was this male chauvinism? Was this a sequela of the disease's "profound systemic depression"? They are important, unanswered questions.
Katherine Anne Porter synthesized the times, the creation of the 'new man,' and the 'new woman.' As Prohibition loomed guys started sporting hip flasks, and the new woman took up the cigarette - alcohol and nicotine, traditional responses, since the 1790s, towards epidemics. The government-issue wristwatch became the emblem of the urban individual; it became essential to the urban-and-factory planning of the Twenties. The government drive for money (War Bonds) was the only occasion of permitted gathering, and that under the slogan "Give 'till it Hurts." Indeed, "Sacrifice" was the watchword for the soldier and the 'new' woman alike: give money, give your time, give your labor, give you life."

This has probably been done before but a Stucky Pirate AU for What If?
Like the 1602 episode, but longer??
(Where Steve's the Captain of the ship, Bucky's the quartermaster Clint's the gunner, Scott's the Boatswain, Sam's the first mate and Nat's the Sailing Master.
Sam has a pair of mechanical wings that he uses to his crew's advantage- it's harder for people to shoot him at a higher angle, plus he can escape and direct breakouts more easily.
Sarah Wilson lives with her two sons on one of the Caribbean islands after retiring from the pirate crew led by Captain Mercedes "Misty" Knight, who's trying not to act to infatuated with Sam.
Clint is a colony man who took to piracy to protect people from the East India Company. Scott and Nat are career pirates, but Nat's been trained as an assassin from her childhood. She prefers just sailing nowadays, but can very much fight.)
-
Steve's dad died fighting in the Royal Navy a hundred years prior, and his ma died of TB as always is, and he's been with just Bucky ever since- But one day, when Bucky gets drafted by the Navy and Steve can't follow, so he volunteers on a suicide mission to find the Fountain of Youth. The alchemist on board the ship, Erskine, is held practically prisoner by the crew because everyone who did manage to find the Fountain in the past always ended up deformed without the key step that only he knew.
Erskine comes to trust Steve with the secret to surviving the Fountain and eventually, when Steve is prodded into the water to test the effects- it works on him. When the other men try, it doesn't.
But from among the company, a soldier pulls a pistol on everyone and manages to kill Erskine. Steve runs after him, chases him to the ship, with the flag of- well you know what the flag looked like. The Hydra was a majestic fleet- and they looked a lot like a Royal Navy fleet. But whatever evils the Navy did, the crew of the Hydra seemed to do tenfold.
Steve finds Bucky imprisoned in the ship, and yadda yadda - Steve pulls in some Royal Navy favors and captains a crew of Howling Commodores against The Hydra fleet When Bucky falls off board into the churning tide, Steve has nothing to live for and sails the main ship into the storm by himself to put an end to this.
Years later, you guessed it, he's found in the ice- we're skipping the Avengers part- he meets Sam Wilson and Clint Barton- two men trying to make a living in the Pirate islands- as well as Captain Fury who's the senior most pirate Captain in the archipelago.
He tries to come to terms with the world and how he'd even live without Bucky-- when Captain Fury is suddenly attacked by a mysteriousss guyyy with darkkk eye makeupp and a crosbowww hmmm who is thattt??
Basically Steve finds out that the Royal Navy was full of the BS of Hydra and he honestly wants it all gone, but he's only one man- with one crew- and he tries his best. He fights the Winter Sailor, gets cornered on an exploding ship and lets himself be beaten up by the other guy till he falls into water and he gets saved and he doesn't see Bucky again for two years.
The difference is that this is when Clint saves Nat from the Red Crew to give her a chance, and brings her into the crew.
Steve eventually finds Bucky with the help of a good natured shapeshifter pirate named Scott Lang and Bucky eventually joins his crew to fight the Royal Navy.
See the thing about this Stucky is: they fuck.
They don't care what others say. The people who had a problem with it never made it in the crew. All members were however, furnished with pliable wax and a set of musical instruments to drown out any sounds from the lower decks.
Bucky doesn't have his left arm, and uses several wooden mechanical prosthetics over the course of battles. But he doesn't wear it in the mornings when he cuddles with Steve out on the quarterdeck - they let the wind blow in their hair as they share a rum flavored kiss.
-
Bruce, Wanda, pietro, Vision and Tony are involved at some points, but they come in the third season, while Loki and Thor come in the shittier fourth season, who's only highlight is going to be Steve and Bucky getting married.

Christmas Punch
Some point to the ancient Hindustani word "paanstch", which means five: a great drink prepared from five key elements - sweet, sour, alcohol (arrak), water and spices. Some, however, attribute it to English merchant sailors who, though they did not invent the punch, very much drank it. Men working on British East India Company ships used it as a beer alternative in the 17th century. The sailors were known to consume large quantities of beer on their voyages, but when the ships reached the warmer waters of the Indian Ocean, the beer in the cargo bays became rancid and stale. Once the ships reached the coast, the sailors created new drinks from ingredients native to their destination: Arrack, citrus fruits and spices. Back at sea or at home, rum or brandy or other wines were more likely to be used.
Naval Officers and a Bowl of Punch by Thomas Rowlandson c.1790 (x)
The sailors brought punch back with them to Britain. With its exotic flavours and expensive ingredients, it became a fixture in the elite homes of 17th-century England and then a staple. Some parties, however, tended to get out of hand. Like the celebration of Edward Russel, captain-general and commander in chief in the Mediterranean. On 25 October 1694 he had a garden party for 6000 guests in his villa, and had his marble fountain filled with punch. For this, 4 hogsheads (c. 960l) of brandy, 8 hogsheads of water, 25000 lemons 75l of lime juice. 560kg of sugar, 3kg of nutmeg, 300 toasted biscuits and a pipe of dry mountain Malaga. The punch was served by a ship's boy who rowed through the fountain in a small boat.
Sailors sharing both punch and wenches. Taken from âGrog on Boardâ by Thomas Rowlandson, 1789 (x)
Punch entered the middle class as ingredients became more affordable during the 18th century. Punch was ubiquitous in the British Atlantic world and spread to the American colonies. So why is it considered more of a Christmas drink. It was because many of the merchants stayed at home during the winter months and made punch for the family on Christmas Day with the spices they had bought for themselves locally. This made it something special and is therefore often associated with the Christmas season, even though it was served all year round, especially when the spices became affordable for many.
And if you want to make now your own punch here is a nice recipe.
Bombay Presidency Punch in Bombay Government, August 13, 1694
Servings: 2 Prep Time: 5 minutes
2 Tbsp sugar 2 Tbsp  lime or lemon juice 1/2 cup rum 3/4 cups water nutmeg
In a non-reactive bowl or pitcher, mix together the sugar and the juice and stir until dissolved. Â (Please use a glass, pottery, or stainless steel bowl or pitcher. Copper, cast iron, and aluminum will react with the acid in the lemon juice.)
Remove any seeds that may have made their way into the bowl. Â Blend in the rum, and then the water.
Add ice. Â Then grate nutmeg over the top.
Enjoy your tipple!

Do you have any recommendations for fountain pens? I was looking at some but i dont know if the ones i was looking at are any good lol
OH YOU ASK BISCUIT ABOUT HYPERFIXATION? YOU ASK THEM AND ARE GENUINELY INTERESTED? HUG FOR LIBELELLE. HUG FOR TEN THOUSAND YEARS. you will regret this i am so sorry in advance
anyway, the most recommended beginner pens are the lamy safari and pilot metropolitan. i personally don't like the metro (the grip section is slippery and makes my fingers inky, and the ink capacity is tiny teeny baby size), and i have never owned a lamy safari, but some people hate the triangle grip. their nibs can also vary greatly in quality, so buying one is a gamble, but a lot of people seem to like their safaris (and metros, some people swear by the metropolitan)
if you just want something cheap, you can try the platinum preppy - they're reliable for the price. the catch: the pen body will crack after about a year. they are not built to last, but if you wanna just test out if you like the (BEGINNER) fountain pen writing experience, then they're a fine choice
personally, i'm a big fan of the twsbi eco, but they are also prone to cracking over time and they get into a lot of shitty corporate slapfights with other pen companies who make piston fillers (my favorite kind of filling mechanism, so much ink capacity [but harder to clean!]). their nibs are reliable and juicy. you can also try the twsbi swipe for a very similar experience with a... cheaper price and look to match. the swipe comes with the same awesome nibs though
there's also the kaweco sport, which a lot of people swear by, but i've never owned because i personally find it ugly and unappealing (SORRY). it's a pocket pen, which means it's tiny when closed but full length when posted (when you put the cap on the end), making it a versatile everyday pen for people who have, like, jobs and stuff. i haven't heard many complaints about the quality control with the sports' nibs. i personally don't think it's the best pen for someone JUST starting out because of its status as a pocket pen, but again, lots of people swear by it. the ink capacity is piss tiny
there's also, of course, the pilot kakuno! cheaper than the pilot metro with what sounds like a reliable nib. i've never owned one, but they seem good for students and the like. it has a fun little smiley face on the nib =) because it's a pilot, the ink capacity is PISS TINY. but it's a good pen.
a word of warning. do NOT buy the ooly splendid. i repeat, DO NOT BUY THE OOLY SPLENDID. cleaning it is a NIGHTMARE because it has a little wick in the nib. like a marker. imagine trying to get all the ink out of the tip of a marker. it is a nightmare. do not buy the ooly splendid it sucks it doesn't even have a good seal so all the ink gets all boogery on the nib. bad
SOME NOTES: lamy and pilot use proprietary cartridges/converters, which basically means you can only use their way of refilling your pen. converters let you use whatever ink you want, which i greatly prefer. kaweco uses international standard short cartridges and converters, which gives you more options for cartridges if you choose to go that route. twsbi uses the piston fill mechanism, which has the most ink capacity by far, but it's harder to switch colors because of the way you have to dismantle the pen to clean it
ok. one thing to note is that these pens will either come with one (1) cartridge or no ink at all. so. what ink do you use?
WELL! one thing that is important to stress is to not use india ink. it will clog and destroy a fountain pen. make sure you only use inks that are clearly labeled for fountain pen use - any other ink may damage your pen.
in any case, i really like waterman intense black for a nice black ink that's easy to use and clean out of pens.
don't use any piddly shit they sell at michael's, it sucks (know from experience)
for any other colors, some brands i can fully endorse are diamine (cheap AND very very reliable!!) and pilot iroshizuku (more expensive, but the ink writes wet [more ink flow] and is vibrant).
brands i would warn against for ink are... NOODLER'S. the owner of noodler's ink is a rabid trump supporter and conspiracy theorist, and with ink names like "1984" and "censor red", i'm surprised more people don't know/care. another is ferris wheel press just because their shit is overpriced and underperforming compared to most other brands. if any ink is more that $40 it's basically a scam
also, shimmer inks are NOT for newbies; they are prone to clogging pens and ruining them. no glitter for new people you will regret it
UHHH OKAY THATS ALL MY BEGINNER ADVICE. SORRY ITS SO MUCH. GOOD LUCK OUT THERE SOLDIER

ok but what if blue sword/temeraire fusion?
Some timeline squishing might be involved, because blue sword is set 20 years after temeraire
plot bunnies, not all connected:
-> the gang has to travel through Damar to reach Istanbul during BPW. This is an Issue because Damarians have a bad history with a large black dragon trying to conquer the country. Temeraire is treated in Damar like Lien is in China. They are helped by a mysterious red-haired stranger
-> Tharkay has a little of the Damarian Gift and every time he has to deal with something emotionally fraught his eyes turn gold. Things tend to break when he is angry, and he has a noticeable habit of keeping his hands to himself when upset. Laurence keeps noticing the light in Tharkay's eyes the same way the British characters notice Harry's kelar.
During the fountain scene Tharkay's eyes are burning gold and Laurence either stuns Tharkay by taking the full force of them and/or Tharkay confuses Laurence by preempively apologizing for the migraine Laurence is going to have in the morning
-> or LAURENCE is Damarian and he is maternal cousins with the Crewes. His "stiff with honor" attitude is him unconsciously keeping himself from setting things on fire. Accidents can be deadly on a ship!
⢠Every time someone runs interference for Laurence about to say or something he regrets out of temper, it's really his friends and allies noticing his kelar acting up (whether they know about it or not) and stepping in before he accidentally makes an admiral choke on a fishbone.
(If he learns about the kelar during the series it's kind of traumatic for his identity as an Englishman. Bonus points for everyone expecting him to do a kelar assisted jump onto Temeraire's back during the amnesia arc and then not doing that.
He heals Tharkay instinctively when Tharkay is found but modern kelar is meant for war, not healing. It's the only time Laurence ever heals and it's very painful for both Laurence and Tharkay
⢠(Tharkay's hands are fine but he has a huge burn scar on his right forearm in the shape of Laurence's hand for the rest of his life)
⢠Laurence's memories are back but he feels like he's been concussed all over again
⢠Bonus points for the encounter with the king's madness (George's) poetically paired with the king's madness (kelar).)
⢠Laurence is blindsided after the war to find out that the maternal great aunt his father was kind of weird about was very important and bby cousin Angharad dropped a mountain on an army is now queen of a foreign country. He won't admit it but he's briefly very annoyed that Richard abandoned his post.
Laurence is running hot during the dinner party in Black Power War, and people can't look him in the eye. Tharkayâs first impression of this British aviator having dinner with these holier-than-thou East India Company peacocks isnât just the Chinese coat and impeccable manners even when drunk and pissed off (doesn't someone with the Damarian Gift know not to get drunk? Is he a fool or an idiot?) âitâs the blue eyes flashing gold to almost literally pin Tharkay in place.
â> no timeline squishing at all and we substitute Damarian dragons for the Damarian horses. Imagine if Tsornin and Isfahel could talk! Red Wind is Harry's first mentor.
⢠The legends of Aerin fire-hair are of Aerin and the elderly dragon Talat defeating the tyrant dragon Maur.
⢠The laprun trials are held in the air, and are almost more about the dragon's right to bear arms than the rider. Dragons ALSO wear sashes, and it's considered bad form in the trials to damage the other dragon's rider or the rider's harness --the trials are a test of skill and self control.
Tsornin is ALSO jealous of Narknon and keeps threatening to eat her. Narknon does not care at all.

HolyâŚ.this raises so many questions. How does it impact the development of the child long term to kept in limbs away from the birth mother and not handed over to the bio parents for months after birth? Will the baby have US citizenship since it was born and spent its first months here? How will daughters fare after arriving in China? Â
FOUNTAIN VALLEY, California â Inside a three-story pastel mansion in this quiet suburb south of Los Angeles, Auntie Wang cradles a 2-week-old baby girl named Echo.
"The more time you spend with her, the more she is attached to you," says Auntie Wang, who moved to the United States seven years ago from China. "You hold her, play with her, engage with her and look, she responds to you."
The 58-year-old clucks and coos at the baby in obvious delight. But for all the affection, she is not the baby's mother or even a relative. She is a hired nanny whose job is to care for Echo and other babies like her born through surrogacy â where a woman carries and gives birth to a baby for another couple or individual.
Auntie Wang does not want to share her full name because of the sensitivity and legal issues around surrogacy in her home country.
The agency she works for, called Fat Daddy, specializes in these services for clients in China â where providing surrogacy is effectively prohibited.
The company is one part of a well-established industry centered in California that also includes the controversial service of bringing Chinese mothers to the U.S. to give birth to their children, known as "birth tourism."
But for nearly three years, the whole industry has been upended by the coronavirus pandemic and China's travel restrictions, which have been among the tightest in the world. In 2020, Beijing completely shut the country's border to contain COVID-19 and has never fully reopened them.
That has meant Chinese parents cannot fly to the U.S. to meet or vet their surrogate in person. Instead, clients have had to send their reproductive samples â eggs, sperm or both â via special delivery to the U.S. so the surrogacy can take place.
China's "zero-COVID" policies and recent passport restrictions have also made it nearly impossible for many Chinese parents to then travel to the U.S. to pick up their newborn babies.
So, for nannies like Auntie Wang, that has meant a lot more work. Whereas before the pandemic, she looked after the babies for up to six weeks, now such care often stretches to several months while the Fat Daddy agency works to arrange flights and the Chinese residency papers required to transport the babies to China.
They're coming to America, where surrogacy is legal in most states
One family caught up in the bureaucracy is 1-year-old Lucy, born in the U.S., and her parents back in China.Â
"Getting a [U.S.] visa took Lucy's mother four months," explains Sunny, a Fat Daddy employee who manages the house where surrogate babies and their caretakers live. She wants to use only her first name in the story to avoid being identified because providing surrogacy is illegal in China. "But her flights from China keep getting canceled."
In the U.S., Chinese couples can easily pay more than $100,000 for surrogacy â high costs that include lodging, catering and transportation.
Cheaper options exist in Thailand, Cambodia, India and Russia. In recent years, Ukraine had become a major center for the industry, but after Russia invaded the country, at least 19 surrogate babies destined for China were left stranded.
Rather than look abroad, some Chinese parents seeksurrogacy services from underground providers in China. One study estimates that a decade ago, up to 500 businesses were operating surreptitiously.
But people using the services had few legal rights if the provider did not hand over the baby â or if the biological parents decided to split custody.
For Chinese parents with the financial means, a popular option remains the U.S., where surrogacy is legal in most states.
"America has everything. America is a good country â as long as you know what you want," says one Chinese birth tourism agent based in California. He does not want to give his name because China bans providing such services. "Having children in the U.S. will always bring advantages, because America is a country for immigrants."
It is difficult to know how many Chinese couples use surrogacy services in California because the state's health department says it does not keep track. But NPR spoke to several agencies that suggested there were hundreds, if not thousands of cases in the state a year.
The co-founder of Fat Daddy, Zheng, says there are many reasons clients want to use his company's services.
He says China used to limit couples to just one child (now the limit is three), so wealthy couples used to have their second or even third child in the U.S. Another reason is that unmarried women and non-heterosexual couples often have a hard time having children or adopting legally.
Having a baby, even via surrogate in the U.S., also grantsthe child coveted American citizenship. Perhaps surprisingly, Zheng says the growing competition between the U.S. and China has actually made American citizenship more attractive to many families.
"In the foreseeable future, China and the U.S. will definitely be the two strongest countries in the world," he says. "If the U.S. is not the first, then China will be and it will definitely be a win-win situation for your children in the future if they have both these nationalities."
Before the pandemic, Zheng says, Chinese demand for surrogacy and birth tourism services was so high he used to rent out entire apartment buildings for Chinese families.
And according to another agent â who only gave her name as Lulu for fear of retribution for speaking frankly about Chinese politics and surrogacy â many of her clients were "high-level Communist Party officials and celebrities" with money and power who wanted their children to have American citizenship. In China it is illegal for citizens to be dual nationals.
Some are going for DIY birth tourism
Only the most determined of prospective Chinese parents are trickling into the U.S. these days.
One of them is Lily, a lawyer from Baotou, Inner Mongolia. She does not want to use her full name because the issue of birth tourism is sensitive in China.
Lily is doing what the industry calls a DIY â do-it-yourself â birth tourism experience; renting her own house and hiring a full-time nanny to look after her toddler Gordon, who was born in the U.S.
When NPR met Lily in May, she was pregnant with a second child. The family planned to spend another six months in the U.S. after the birth before returning home.
"There are all-around advantages in the U.S.; freedom of speech, a sense of security," she says, explaining her decision. "My child is definitely better off if they have these options."
She also half-jokes that she also came to the U.S. because she wanted a pain-free birth. "It is difficult to get full epidurals in China!" she says.
But many aren't as lucky as Lily. Parents using surrogacy will have a long wait before they can see their babies.
Now many of the babies are flown back to China under the supervision of a dedicated nanny provided by the agencies.
For Auntie Wang, seeing the babies she's looked after for many months is always a hugely emotional moment.
"Oh, we cry when we say goodbye to these children! It is painful to part with them. They're like our own," says Auntie Wang. "It is like this for all the nannies. After even just a month you have an emotional bond with them."

The Timeless Elegance of Parker Pen Company: A Story of Craftsmanship and Innovation
Introduction: A Legacy Inked in Style
Have you ever held a Parker pen and felt its elegance radiate through your fingertips? Thereâs something about this iconic brand that exudes class and reliability. The Parker Pen Company, founded in 1888 by George Safford Parker, has etched its name as one of the worldâs most distinguished pen manufacturers. With its unwavering commitment to quality and innovation, Parker pens are more than just writing toolsâthey are a symbol of timeless sophistication.
In this article, weâll take a deep dive into the illustrious history of Parker, explore its partnership with Luxor, and uncover why it continues to be a favorite among pen enthusiasts worldwide.
The Origins: How It All Began
Every iconic brand has a story, and Parker is no exception. George Safford Parker, a telegraphy instructor in Wisconsin, was frustrated with leaky and unreliable pens. Instead of settling for mediocrity, he decided to create a solution. With the motto "It will always be possible to make a better pen," Parker launched his first pen in 1888.
The breakthrough came in 1894 when Parker patented the âLucky Curve,â a revolutionary ink-feed system that minimized ink leakage. This innovation set the company apart, marking the start of its journey to becoming a global phenomenon.
Innovation at Its Core: What Makes Parker Special?
Whatâs the secret sauce behind Parkerâs enduring popularity? Itâs a mix of innovation, quality, and an eye for detail. Over the decades, Parker has introduced several groundbreaking technologies:
Quink Ink (1931): Parker developed a quick-drying ink that eliminated the need for blotting paper.
Vacumatic Filling System (1933): This replaced traditional ink sacs, increasing ink capacity.
Jotter Ballpoint Pen (1954): The Jotter was a game-changer, blending affordability with Parkerâs signature quality.
Every Parker pen is a masterpiece, combining functional excellence with elegant aesthetics. Whether itâs the smooth flow of ink or the polished design, Parker pens elevate the writing experience.
Parker and Luxor: A Winning Partnership in India
Parker pens became widely available in India through their partnership with Luxor, a leading name in the Indian stationery market. This collaboration has brought Parkerâs premium products closer to millions of Indian consumers.
Luxorâs robust distribution network and Parkerâs unmatched quality make the duo a force to reckon with. From school students to corporate professionals, Parker pens are a coveted accessory in India. The partnership has ensured that Parker pens are easily accessible, blending luxury with affordability.
Why Choose a Parker Pen?
1. Symbol of Prestige
Letâs face itâowning a Parker pen is like having a badge of honor. Itâs not just a pen; itâs a statement of style and sophistication.
2. Durability and Reliability
How many pens have you thrown away because they stopped working? With Parker, thatâs a rare scenario. These pens are built to last, ensuring a smooth writing experience for years.
3. Variety for Every Taste
Whether youâre into fountain pens, ballpoints, or rollerballs, Parker has something for everyone. Their range includes classics like the Parker 51 and the modern Sonnet series, catering to both traditionalists and contemporary users.
4. Perfect Gift Option
Looking for a thoughtful gift? A Parker pen is a timeless choice thatâs perfect for every occasion. Itâs classy, meaningful, and always appreciated.
Caring for Your Parker Pen
Owning a Parker pen comes with a sense of responsibility. After all, a masterpiece deserves care. Here are some quick tips:
Clean Regularly: Especially if youâre using a fountain pen. A simple rinse with lukewarm water does wonders.
Store Properly: Keep your pen capped when not in use to avoid drying out.
Use Quality Ink: Stick to Parker-approved inks to maintain optimal performance.
Parker Pens in Pop Culture
Did you know that Parker pens have made several appearances in movies and books? From James Bondâs gadget-laden Parker pen in GoldenEye to literary mentions, these pens are woven into the fabric of popular culture.
Their presence in such iconic moments only adds to their allure, making them a cherished possession for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
The Future of Parker Pens
In a world dominated by digital communication, youâd think traditional writing instruments would lose their charm. But Parker pens defy the odds. With their blend of innovation and heritage, they continue to appeal to modern consumers who value authenticity.
The Parker-Luxor partnership is expanding its reach, ensuring that this iconic brand stays relevant in todayâs fast-paced world. From eco-friendly packaging to modern designs, Parker is evolving while staying true to its roots.
Conclusion: Writing Your Legacy with Parker
The Parker Pen Company isnât just about pensâitâs about creating experiences. Whether youâre jotting down your thoughts, signing an important document, or simply enjoying the art of handwriting, Parker pens add a touch of elegance to every moment.

With the rise in Science and Technology, there has been continuous innovations and upgradations leading us towards a better and progressive future.
