Western Beauty
Western wear is a category of men's and women's clothing which derives its unique style from the clothes worn in the 19th century Wild West. It ranges from accurate historical reproductions of American frontier clothing, to the stylized garments popularized by Western film and television or singing cowboys such as Gene Autry and Roy Rogers in the 1940s and 1950s. It continues to be a fashion choice in the West and Southwestern United States, as well as people associated with country music or Western lifestyles, for example the various Western or Regional Mexican music styles. Western wear typically incorporates one or more of the following, Western shirts with pearl snap fasteners and vaquero design accents, blue jeans, cowboy hat, a leather belt, and cowboy boots.
Hat
Lawman Bat Masterson wearing a bowler hat. In the early days of the Old West, it was the bowler hat rather than the slouch hat, centercrease (derived from the army regulation Hardee hat), or sombrero that was the most popular among cowboys as it was less likely to blow out off in the wind. The hats worn by Mexican rancheros and vaqueros inspired the modern day cowboy hats.By the 1870s, however, the Stetson had become the most popular cowboy hat due to its use by the Union Cavalry as an alternative to the regulation blue kepi.
Stampede strings were installed to prevent the hat from being blown off when riding at speed. These long strings were usually made from leather or horsehair. Typically, the string was run half-way around the crown of a cowboy hat, and then through a hole on each side with its ends knotted and then secured under the chin or around the back of the head keeping the hat in place in windy conditions or when riding a horse.
The tall white ten gallon hats traditionally worn by movie cowboys were of little use for the historical gunslinger as they made him an easy target, hence the preference of lawmen like Wild Bill Hickok, Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson for low-crowned black hats.
Originally part of the traditional Plains Indian clothing, coonskin caps were frequently worn by mountain men like Davy Crockett for their warmth and durability. These were revived in the 1950s following the release of a popular Disney movie starring Fess Parker.
Shirt
1950s style Western shirt with snap fastenings of the type popularized by singing cowboys A Western shirt is a traditional item of Western wear characterized by a stylized yoke on the front and on the back. It is generally constructed of chambray, denim or tartan fabric with long sleeves, and in modern form is sometimes seen with snap pockets, patches made from bandana fabric, and fringe. The "Wild West" era was during the late Victorian era, hence the direct similarity of fashion.
A Western dress shirt is often elaborately decorated with piping, embroidered roses and a contrasting yoke. In the 1950s these were frequently worn by movie cowboys like Roy Rogers or Clayton Moore's Lone Ranger. Derived from the elaborate Mexican vaquero costumes like the guayabera, these were worn at rodeos so the cowboy could be easily identifiable. Buffalo Bill was known to wear them with a buckskin fringe jacket during his Wild West shows and they were fashionable for teenagers in the 1970s and late 2000s.
Another common type of Western shirt is the shield-front shirt worn by many US Cavalry troopers during the American Civil War but originally derived from a red shirt issued to prewar firefighters. The cavalry shirt was made of blue wool with yellow piping and brass buttons and was invented by the flamboyant George Armstrong Custer. In recent times this shield-front shirt was popularised by John Wayne in Fort Apache and was also worn by rockabilly musicians like the Stray Cats.
In 1946, Papa Jack Wilde put snap buttons on the front, and pocket flaps on the Western shirt, and established Rockmount Ranch Wear.
Coat When a jacket is required there is a wide choice available for both linedancers and historical re-enactors. Cowboy coats originated from charro suits and were passed down to the vaqueros who later introduced it to the american cowboys. These include frock coats, ponchos popularised by Clint Eastwood's Spaghetti Westerns, short Mexican jackets with silver embroidery, fringe jackets popular among outlaw country, southern rock and 1980s heavy metal bands, and duster coats derived from originals worn in the Wild West. More modern interpretations include leather waistcoats inspired by the biker subculture and jackets with a design imitating the piebald color of a cow. Women may wear bolero jackets derived from the Civil War era zouave uniforms, shawls, denim jackets in a color matching their skirt or dress, or a fringe jacket like Annie Oakley.
For more formal occasions inhabitants of the West might opt for a suit with "smile" pockets, piping and a yoke similar to that on the Western shirts. This can take the form of an Ike jacket, leisure suit or three-button sportcoat. Country and Western singer Johnny Cash was known to wear an all-black Western suit, in contrast to the elaborate Nudie suits worn by stars like Elvis Presley and Porter Wagoner. The most elaborate western wear is the custom work created by rodeo tailors such as Nudie Cohn and Manuel, which is characterized by elaborate embroidery and rhinestone decoration. This type of western wear, popularized by country music performers, is the origin of the phrase rhinestone cowboy.
Trousers
Cowboy wearing leather chaps at a rodeo
A Texas tuxedo comprising a denim jacket, boots and jeans. In the early days of the Wild West trousers were made out of wool. In summer canvas was sometimes used. This changed during the Gold Rush of the 1840s when denim overalls became popular among miners for their cheapness and breathability. Levi Strauss improved the design by adding copper rivets and by the 1870s this design was adopted by ranchers and cowboys. The original Levi's jeans were soon followed by other makers including Wrangler jeans and Lee Cooper. These were frequently accessorised with kippy belts featuring metal conchos and large belt buckles.
Leather chaps were often worn to protect the cowboy's legs from cactus spines and prevent the fabric from wearing out.Two common types include the skintight shotgun chaps and wide batwing chaps. The latter were sometimes made from hides retaining their hair (known as "woolies") rather than tanned leather. They appeared on the Great Plains somewhere around 1887.
Women wore knee-length prairie skirts, red or blue gingham dresses or suede fringed skirts derived from Native American dress. Saloon girls wore short red dresses with corsets, garter belts and stockings. After World War II, many women, returning to the home after working in the fields or factories while the men were overseas, began to wear jeans like the men.
Neckwear
Working cowboy wearing a bandana or "wild rag," 1880s During the Victorian era, gentlemen would wear silk cravats or neckties to add color to their otherwise sober black or grey attire. These continued to be worn by respectable Westerners until the early 20th century. Following the Civil War it became common practice among working class veterans to loosely tie a bandana around their necks to absorb sweat and keep the dust out of their faces. This practise originated in the Mexican War era regular army when troops threw away the hated leather stocks (a type of collar issued to soldiers) and replaced them with cheap paisley kerchiefs.
Another well-known Western accessory, the bolo tie, was a pioneer invention reputedly made from an expensive hatband. This was a favorite for gamblers and was quickly adopted by Mexican charros, together with the slim "Kentucky" style bowtie commonly seen on stereotypical Southern gentlemen like Colonel Sandersor Boss Hogg. In modern times it serves as formal wear in many western states, notably Montana, New Mexico

Geriviar
Image by Wayne England, © Wizards of the Coast. Accessed at the Monster Manual III Art Gallery here
[Commissioned by @justicegundam82, who requested the CR be lowered from its original 19. The SLAs of the original seemed a little out of place to me, with it already having a number of gimmicks, but I’ve included them as an optional advancement, like the various types of elder giants.]
Geriviar CR 13 NE Monstrous Humanoid This giant has four arms and a rocky hide, its body covered in bony nodules and horny growths. Its arms have an extra pair of joints, giving them an odd, limber quality.
A geriviar is a massive creature with a stony body, obsessed with the destruction of permanent structures. They like marshes due to the spongy soil and difficulty in erecting any major settlements. Gerivars are wandering creatures with a large territory, and they rarely stay in one place long out of paranoia that buildings may be constructed in the fringes of their territories. Due to this inherent mania, and their skill in tearing fortifications to the ground, sages suspect that they were magically created as a living siege engine. The architects of this are unknown, but they may be the same power that created the calikangs, given the stony hides and multiple arms of both species.
Geriviars are expert combatants, but their single-minded focus means that they may spend the first round or two of combat attacking a wall or building rather than targeting the living creatures within it. Their fists are as strong as battering rams; they can hurl boulders as well as any catapult, and can fire bony masses that explode like grenades. Only acid or cold can permanently injure a geriviar, and they concentrate their attacks on any foe capable of wielding these energies. They are highly mobile creatures, dropping onto all six limbs to gallop rapidly to key locations, or simply leaping over obstacles.
A geriviar stands between 25 and 30 feet on average, and weighs around 12 tons.
Geriviar Siege-breakers A few geriviars are born with innate magical powers, granting them even greater abilities to shape battlefields and destroy hated structures. A geriviar siege-breaker has the advanced simple template and access to the following spell-like abilities; 3/day—invisibility, shout (DC 20), 1/day—reverse gravity, telekinesis (DC 21). The caster level for these spell like abilities is CL 13th. A geriviar siege-breaker is a CR 14 creature.

Gallop (Ex) A geriviar can move 6 times its speed when making a run action, and can run through difficult terrain. It is not treated as flat-footed when running or climbing. Mighty Leap (Ex) A geriviar can make Acrobatics checks to jump without penalty when it doesn’t have a running start. When it does have a running start, it treats the distance covered as twice the normal distance. Nodule Bomb (Su) As a standard action, a geriviar can fire one of its bony protuberances from its body at a range of 80 feet. The nodule explodes in a 10 foot radius, dealing 5d6 points of slashing damage and 5d6 points of fire damage to all creatures in the area (Reflex DC 24 half). A geriviar can use this ability a number of times per day equal to its Constitution modifier (8/day for the average specimen).

Scalped on Elm Street: Native Americans Fought Cincinnati‘s First Settlers
Cincinnatians have mostly forgotten that the Ohio Valley was the western frontier and that Native Americans lived here first and didn’t leave voluntarily.
When the early settlers built their first churches – the Columbia Baptist Church and a Presbyterian Church at Fourth and Vine – every man in attendance was required to bring his loaded musket and sentries were posted to watch for attack.
On 1 June 1791, Benjamin Van Cleve and two other Cincinnati residents were attacked while clearing an out-lot just south of where Music Hall is now located on Elm Street. Alerted by their barking dog, the settlers raced back toward the cabins on the banks of the Ohio River. In his “Extracts from the History of Cincinnati,” A.E. Jones tells the grisly tale
“Two of them made their escape, but Van Cleve, who had passed them in the race, and at the time was three hundred yards or more in advance, was intercepted at a fallen tree top, by an Indian who sprang on him from behind the ambuscade. Van Cleve was seen to throw the savage and the Indian to plunge a knife twice or thrice into the side of his antagonist, but, perceiving the approach of the whites, he hastily stripped off the scalp and made his escape to his party in the rear. When the two fugitives got up, Van Cleve was entirely lifeless.”
On another occasion, a sergeant, a corporal and another young man left Cincinnati to deliver a cow to Dunlap Station on the Great Miami River. Before leaving town, the sergeant stopped by a blacksmith’s shop to pay part of his bill.
“You had better pay me more,” the blacksmith said, “The Indians will get the rest.”
The sergeant waved off the warning, but A.E. Jones reports:
“In the course of two hours afterward he had a bullet put through him, his scalp taken, and the residue of his money carried off.”
Dunlap Station, out on the very northwest boundary of Colerain Township, was one of a series of outposts circling Cincinnati on the fringes of settlement. Among them were White’s Station in Carthage and Covalt’s Station in Terrace Park.
One of the most gruesome incidents of early Cincinnati took place at Dunlap Station. Shawnee warriors had kidnapped some settlers from that area, so a few soldiers were dispatched from Fort Washington in Cincinnati to beef up defenses. On 10 January 1791, about 500 Native Americans surrounded the station and demanded its surrender. The garrison refused, and after a day of intermittent gunfire, the Indians brought out Abner Hunt, one of the kidnapped men. According to Greve’s “Centennial History of Cincinnati”:
“He was brought to a place in full view of the station, where he was stripped entirely naked, and fastened to a log with his hands and feet outstretched, and pinioned to the ground. A pile of dead limbs was placed upon his body and set on fire, while a horrid dance, accompanied with whooping and yelling, was kept up for hours. The screams of Hunt were plainly heard by the garrison in the midst of the yelling of the Indians, and continued for a long time, growing fainter and fainter toward daylight, when they ceased, as life had probably expired.”
A larger troop from Fort Washington arrived later that day to break the siege.
White’s Station near Carthage was attacked on 19 October 1793 by a band of 40 warriors. Dogs around the station began barking and the settlers, thinking they had treed a raccoon, went out to look. They were interrupted by a war whoop and gunfire. A settler named Andrew Goebel was cut down by a dozen musket balls. Two children were killed in the attack. Only one attacker, the chief, managed to leap into the stockade, where he was shot to death. The settlers flayed his corpse and made razor strops from his skin. According to Jones, one of these strops remained, in 1888, in the possession of one of the families involved.
At this early date, powdered wigs were still in fashion. This accessory figures into a report by A.E. Jones about an attack upon Colonel Robert Elliott, a contractor engaged in supplying General Anthony Wayne’s army. One day, business took him to Fort Hamilton in Butler County, a dangerous trip through territory controlled by indigenous warriors.
“He was a very large man, weighing, it is said, more than three hundred pounds and wore a large wig. When some four miles from Fort Hamilton, on what is now the Winton Road, he was shot and killed by a party of Indians. His servant fled back to Hamilton, followed by the Colonel's horse. One of the Indians, said to have been a chief, ran to scalp him. Seizing the hair, and about to apply the scalping knife, the wig came off; he looked at it with astonishment for a moment, and exclaimed, ‘Damn lie!’”
In 1792, a 10-year-old boy named Oliver Spencer was kidnapped by Indians while walking home to Columbia from an Independence Day celebration at Fort Washington. An adult companion was killed and scalped, but Spencer was enslaved for most of a year by his captors until he was ransomed and returned to his family. He later became a prominent banker and wrote a book about his captivity.
Although the attacks described so far featured muskets and gunpowder, some Native Americans preferred bow and arrow. After centuries of experimentation, these so-called primitive weapons were formidable, indeed. Jones describes the brutal power of a flint-tipped projectile:
“These were the last instances in which a savage rifle was fired within the present limits of Cincinnati, later depredations being connected with the bow and arrow, which enabled them to destroy cattle while prowling through the streets by night, which frequently occurred, without creating an alarm. On one of these visits they shot an arrow with a stone head into an ox with such force that it went entirely through the carcass.”
In the spring of 1794, a caravan transporting military supplies was attacked on what is now Hamilton Avenue. A posse was quickly pulled together and charged after the Indians, who escaped. According to Greve:
“They found, however, lying in the run, the body of the man who was killed. He had been tomahawked and scalped. This body was buried near the spot. As late as 1857, while building a bridge over Bloody Run, Solomon Burkhalter came upon the remains of the man buried there 63 years before. The body was reinterred deeper in the earth beneath the abutment of the bridge.”
It should be noted that, while the pioneering immigrants are somewhat reticent with details, it is obvious that they engaged in atrocities and brutal attacks as well.

5 of the strangest animals found in Zoos.
1: Pallas Cat
Found in Columbus Zoo, you can find the Pallas Cat which is native to the steppe regions of Central Asia. Despite being the size of a standard house cat, it’s one of the most rare, secretive, and highly-threatened cat species on the planet. They live very solitary lives in harsh environments to they produce huge litters to combat the high infant mortality rate. The cat feeds on small animals such as gerbils, pikas, voles, birds and sometimes they catch young marmots.
2: The Goliath Birdeater Tarantula
located in Fort Worth Zoological Park, you can find the worlds largest tarantula. native to northern South America, these arachnids are nocturnal and live in deep burrows in swampy or marshy areas. despite being fairly harmless creatures to humans, they do have many tiny dagger like hairs on its body which kicks into the air to warn away possible predators when threatened, they may look harmless but if caught in eyes or air ways it can cause serious discomfort and lasting damage.
Despite spiders being one of the most feared creatures on earth, I do have a soft spot for these animals as they are amazing and unique. however I wouldn't be too keen having a spider the size of my hand crawling on me.
3: Axolotls
found in Memphis Zoo, the cute looking amphibian is unusual as instead of growing lungs and living on the land, they remain aquatic and gilled unlike other amphibians who switch to land once maturing to adult hood.
Despite being Axolotls a staple in the Aztec diet in th mexican market, Axolotls have regenerative abilities. They are capable of regenerating lost appendages in a period of months.
4: Tasselled Wobbegong
in Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo u can find a peculiar looking shark native to Australia. they are able to grow to around 12 feet long and is most noticeable by their fringe that covers its head that grants it excellent camouflage. i find the name more unusual that the actual animal.
5: The Aye-Aye
located in Denver Zoo u can find a very weird rodent. most known for its large ayes and oddly long middle finger, the nocturnal animal is able to use its finger to tap of trees in order to find bugs hidden beneath the bark, which it then digs in to retrieve the grubs with his long finger. lots of people find this animal ugly and weird but i think they're really cute and interesting.

Cultivating Your Personal Style | Maximizing Your Current Closet
Now that I have my mood boards handy, I can check out my own closet to see what items I can highlight this fall. It’s important for me to be very clear and stress that I do NOT buy a full wardrobe of all new clothes each season! I don’t have the budget or the desire to start over from scratch. I have my core closet of basics all set and ready to go plus the items you’ll see below. Two of the things I know I’ll be adding to my wardrobe are this spice toned suede jacket and I bought fabric to make some amazing rust colored high waisted flares (wish me luck!). I also bought this Free People dress for a possible wedding guest outfit and it was too small in the lower ribs. Waiting until the end of my Whole30 to see if it fits or if I need to size up!
Ok! Let’s talk about favorites I’ve already got and can’t wait to wear to fit my seventies throwback theme!
Shearling Jacket
I made this beauty last fall when I was pregnant and I think it will be so cute over the Free People dress or with a navy turtleneck and those rust flares. And I’ll definitely repeat it just as you see here (with regular jeans instead of maternity of course!). Simply said - it’s a great neutral that’s going to get a lot of milage!
Fringe Leather Bag
I bought this beauty during the Nordstrom Sale a few years ago and it's one of my most used handbags. I love the color and style and it's big enough for a couple diapers, wipes and my wallet. I rarely carry a diaper bag at all actually! Anyway, this will look great with my new thrifted boots as well as others already in my closet.
Navy Peacoat
Say 1970s and I’ll instantly think of one of my favorite movies - Love Story. Ali McGraw wears a navy peacoat and it’s such a great classic. It works as easily with modern looks as it does more vintage styled outfits. I like navy because of how it works with so many other colors in my closet!
Cream Cable Turtleneck
This is another classic that looks great with just about every jacket or pair of pants in my closet. It’ll be worn a lot - just like in years past!
High Waisted Dark Denim
I love these Frame jeans (I wore this over the weekend which you can see here) because they make my legs look super long and the stretch fabric makes them comfortable! Also - they go with just about everything!
Camel Cape
This vintage cape is best suited for days when I’m not holding kids (cause let’s be real, capes are not easy with full hands), but I like this piece a lot!
Oxblood Vintage Leather Crop Jacket
I can still remember buying this piece at a Fort Wayne Goodwill over 15 years ago! It’s gotten a makeover (it was originally a long coat) but I wear it a lot more cropped off. I like the wide collar and braided details!
High Waisted Denim Skirt
I want to give this skirt a little more love this season. Obviously it didn’t work for me when I was pregnant last year, but I think paired with boots and a hippy-esque boots it would be super cute at some end of the summer barbecues.
High Waisted Button Front Jeans
Ugh. These jeans got misplaced during our move and they are the one thing I wish I could find most! The rise is so cute and I hope I can even tailor them in a little bit for a more defined waist.
Navy Ditty Print Maxi Dress
One of my all time favorite dresses (see all of the ways I’ve worn it here) will absolutely be worn a bunch this fall. I think I’ll give it a new look by wearing it with the suede jacket I mentioned above with a navy floppy hat.
Purple Printed Chiffon Dress
Here’s another dress I can’t wait to pair with the suede moto jacket and boots for a kid free afternoon or evening.
These aren’t the only pieces I’m excited to feature, but they are a good start! I have some vintage sweaters and printed skirts and dresses I hope I fit into soon too!
For the final portion of this series, I’ll recap the pieces I’ve put on my wishlist and more ideas for how I’ll style them up! Stay tuned!

CRI&P La Salle St Station Chicago IL 1967 George Lane Coll JEH Coll
I found this spectacular photograph of La Salle Street Station in Chicago, IL. today while I was sorting slides. It truly took my breath away! It shows the layout of the station as it was in the late Sixties, before the advent of Amtrak and the near-end of private intercity passenger train traffic in Chicago. At center in the background, behind the truck, is Polk Street Interlocking Tower, which controlled the station throat. At left, an outbound morning commuter train behind a clean maroon EMD F-unit prepares to take the signal to proceed past 16th Street Interlocking Tower and head (railroad) west toward the Suburban Branch, Blue Island and eventually, Joliet, 37 miles distant. An equipment move behind an equally clean Alco RS3 waits to the left of the commuter train. It will head toward 47th Street Yard, where the equipment will be serviced, cleaned, switched and staged for the upcoming evening rush. To the right in foreground, crews are unloading an inbound pig train, while others work adjacent to the freight house.
La Salle Street Station was located at 414 South La Salle Street on the southwest fringe of downtown Chicago. It was a major intercity rail terminal for the New York Central Railroad until 1968 and the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad until 1978. The present structure is the fifth station on the site. The previous structure was demolished in 1981 and was replaced by the current station and a new office high-rise for the Chicago Stock Exchange. The landmark Chicago Board of Trade Building is shown prominently to the right of the station in this view.
The first station on the site opened on 22 May 1852 with the completion of the Northern Indiana & Chicago Railroad. On 01 October 1852, the Chicago & Rock Island Railroad began using the station. The two railroads later became the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railway (New York Central Railroad) and Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad. North of a junction at Englewood Union Station, both companies' lines ran jointly to the terminal.
In December 1866, a new station opened. The Great Chicago Fire of October 1871 destroyed this station, which was rebuilt shortly afterwards. The post-fire station was eventually demolished to make way for a new station that opened 01 July 1903. That particular version of La Salle Street Station operated and stood until 1981. That same station was a set for Alfred Hitchcock's 1959 "North by Northwest," starring Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint. It was also utilized in making the 1973 movie, "The Sting," starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford.
The New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad (Nickel Plate Road), built in 1882, ran over the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railroad from a junction at Grand Crossing north to downtown Chicago, where it had its own terminal south of LaSalle Street Station. The LS&MS gained control of the Nickel Plate Road, and later allowed it into its LaSalle Street Station as a tenant. In July 1916, the LS&MS sold the Nickel Plate Road to the Van Sweringen family, but it continued to operate into LaSalle until the end of Nickel Plate Road passenger service.
From 31 July 31 1904 to 01 August 1913, LaSalle Street Station was also used by trains of the Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad, which reached it via trackage rights on the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific from Ashburn.
On 18 January 1957, trains of the Michigan Central Railroad started to use LaSalle, running over the New York Central Railroad's Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railroad from their crossing at Porter, Indiana to Chicago. LS&MS and Michigan Central trains (both part of the New York Central system) last used LaSalle on 26 October 1968 (soon after the Penn Central merger); the next day, trains began running into Union Station via a connection in Whiting, Indiana with the Pennsylvania Railroad (Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne & Chicago Railroad).
Most intercity rail service at La Salle Street Station ended on 01 May 1971, when Amtrak consolidated long-distance services at Union Station. Rock Island opted out of Amtrak and continued to operate intercity service from LaSalle until 1978.
A connection at Englewood Union Station was completed 15 October 1971 to allow the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad to also operate over the PFW&C to Union Station, but the failing Rock Island decided to continue using LaSalle. Now only commuter trains on Metra's Rock Island District serve the station.
Among the most famous name trains that terminated at LaSalle Street Station were the New York Central's 20th Century Limited from 1902 until 1967 and the Rock Island-Southern Pacific Golden State Limited from 1902 until 1968.
Although only Metra's Rock Island District trains currently serve LaSalle, additional service is planned for the future. Metra's proposed SouthEast Service (over the former C&EI) would terminate at LaSalle, and Chicago's massive CREATE infrastructure improvement program would allow trains from Metra's SouthWest Service (over the former Wabash Railroad) to access the terminal. 1967, George Lane Collection, James E. Humbert Collection.

Facets of Perfection, ch. 03
If anyone told Bruce five years ago he’d be a family man, he would laugh and direct them to Arkham. It was an unexpected and strange turn of events that led him to this place. But he didn’t regret a thing. Even the fact that his ancestral home was ruined. It was for the better, the burden of revenge and responsibility was crushing him to the ground.
Now, with kids and new responsibilities he had st enough to keep him busy, keep him useful, but still was free enough to enjoy life.
Plus, Alfred was ecstatic when they adopted. It all turned out suspiciously well…
Jogging down the stairs he smiled to himself. Life was good.
The fridge was wide open, as was the back entrance to the house. He shook his head.
“Ace, close the door,“ Bruce commanded the dog. “Kids, Bane is upstairs, so remember our talk yesterday, okay? No one but Mommy, him and me can enter the study,” he took a bottle of juice from the boys straining hands and poured him and his sister a drink.
“Ok, Dad,” said Tim. Cassie nodded.
“Sel should be here soon with your aunt. I need to make dinner. Would you guys help me?”
“Yes!” the boy shouted. His sister smiled and nodded fervently.
“Let’s wash our hands, then.”
They were in the middle of preparing the ingredients for the sauce when Bane came down to join them.
“May I be of any help?”
Cassie patted the stool beside the one she was sitting at, gesturing for him to join her.
“Would you cut the vegetables?” Bruce asked without turning and looking.
“But of course.” Bane gallantly bowed before the girl and winked at her before he took the offered seat. She giggled, noiselessly, and went back to peeling carrots.
It was a pasta dish, one that didn’t require much work. They were done in a flash, just in time to hear the car pull up the driveway when they let the sauce to simmer.
“Mommy’s home!” Tim shouted excitedly and ran out of the kitchen to the yard. Ace and Cassie closely followed.
“Showdown,” Bruce muttered, going after the kids. Bane trailed him, without a word, stopping at the threshold to survey the scene before his eyes.
The dog was ecstatic, running circles around the group, stopping from time to time to lick Selina’s hands or to bark with excitement. He even sprinted to Bane once or twice, trying to engage him as well, begging to be pet.
Selina’s cousin chatted pleasantly with the family. Bane noticed she crouched to greet Cassie, who nervously bit her thumb and kept shyly peeking at her new aunt from under the lace of her hair. Tim talked animatedly, no doubt mouthing about everything that happened from the moment Selina left to the airport. Bruce unpacked the suitcases from the trunk of the car.
When everything settled a bit, Bane decided to greet the new guest as well. Descending slowly towards the group, he took the chance to get the last look at the woman, unmarred by her words or actions.
She was Selinas height, so quite average for most, and small for Bane. Her dark hair was short, cropped close to the skin at the back, flaring into a wavy fringe at the top of her head. She had an easy smile and an air of brazen confidence around her. The cockiness was perhaps, just an act. He saw defeat in the slump of her shoulders, a flaw she tried to hide.
But when she turned towards him, the impression was gone.
“Bane, meet my cousin,” Selina introduced.
There was a glint of surprise at his name, but Bane was long used to that. He took the palm the woman offered and took care not to squeeze her too tightly.
“Victoria Childers,” she murmured.
“Bane,” he murmured back.
She frowned momentarily and glanced at Selina.
“Just ‘Bane’?”
“I have other names, but none as neutral as this one.”
“Okay…” Victoria let her voice trail out, underlining her doubt at his words.
“Let’s get you settled, shall we?” Bruce interjected. “Dinner will be ready soon.”
oOo
While the sauce was simmering, Tim set the table under Bane’s watchful eye, and with a little help from the man with heavier dishes. Selina took Victoria upstairs, Bruce and Cassie stayed in the kitchen to feed Ace.
Domestic bliss, Bane thought.
Once upon a time, he was Wayne’s greatest rival. They competed on opposite sides of the law, always trying to outsmart the other. But then it turned out, they were both manoeuvred into being enemies. Their mentor pulled all the strings.
When Wayne Manor burned, Bane knew there was nothing left in the organization, that he wanted to be a part of. Not even Talia, Ra’s-al-Ghul’s daughter, could convince him to stay. He left and focused on himself, for the first time in his life.
To his surprise, Wayne did the same.
Perhaps it wasn’t that unexpected, seeing why Bane was staying with his family… The results of the test should turn up in a fortnight or so, and then all would be clear.
“Uncle Bane?” Tims' voice brought him back to the present. “Help me with water? I can’t reach.”
He took the jug and filled glasses on the table. Just when he was finishing, Wayne came in with a big salad dish.
“I have dressing on the side, especially for you.”
Bane paused mid-pour and narrowed his eyes.
“Are you saying I’m fat?” Bane asked flatly.
It was stupid, but the familiarity and domesticity weren’t both of their fortes. The tension broke, and Bruce laughed out first.
“Well, there is some gym equipment in the garage...”
“I shall peruse it then if you don’t mind.”
“Oh, by all means. You look like you need it.”
Bane snorted and went after Bruce to the kitchen, to fill up the jug again. Just when he left the dining room he nearly crashed with Victoria, who was jogging carelessly down the stairs.
“Watch out,” he warned, putting out a steadying hand on her arm.
She hissed. The muscles beneath Banes' palm spasmed and she jumped away as if burned.
“Are you injured?”
“None of your business.”
With her head ducked low she skirted away to the living room.
Bane looked after her for a second. There was no need to rush, all questions he might have about her would be answered eventually. He had enough time to untangle every thread of her being and examine it, lined up neatly before him.
It was a bit curious though, that he already had some cogs working on who was Victoria Childers.

Listen to Wxradio by Josh Colletta #np on #SoundCloud I think it's safe to say that my weather radio works. Pretty solid signal out of Angola (KXI94). It's only slightly hampered by putting the antenna down. Same of the Onondaga station (WXK81), which is actually about 10 miles further away from me than Angola, and looking at the map, I'm on the fringe of their predicted coverage area. Interestingly, I can't get the Adrian station (WNG647) to come in no matter what I do. But, then again, that signal is only 300 watts whereas the other two are 1,000 watts, and it's supposed to be pretty spotty east of (roughly) Pittsford. I'm on the west side of Hillsdale city proper -- nine miles west of Pittsford -- so that's not hard to figure out. Technically speaking, all three are "local" to Hillsdale County, but WXK81 is run by the Grand Rapids office and WNG647 is run by the White Lake office (metro Detroit, west of Pontiac). Hillsdale County's *official* weather forecast office is North Webster, Indiana (roughly halfway between Fort Wayne and South Bend), which is the office that runs KXI94, so that's the important one.

Week 4 fantasy rookie report: Watson stars as emerging RBs go down
yahoo
In recent memory, there had been few rookies class producing like this right out of the gate. Yes, of course there’s superstar Kareem Hunt, but the depth was what was making this class so, so impressive.
Then Dalvin Cook went down Sunday afternoon with a torn ACL. A few hours later, Chris Carson broke his leg. Those two injuries were just a small part of a day that saw several important players go down with significant injuries.
The hope is that whenever Cook and Carson return, they come back as strong as ever. They’re both special young talents. But from a fantasy prospective, it’s time to scramble for replacements, as challenging as that may be. You may even find those replacements in Cook and Carson’s fellow rookies.
Here are the rookies broken into tiers a quarter of the way through the season.
Superstars: Kareem Hunt
Kareem Hunt has had over 100 total yards in each of his first four NFL games. (AP Photo/Charlie Riedel)
Hunt’s incredible streak of three straight games with a touchdown of at least 50 yards ended, but that doesn’t mean he leaves the top tier. The Chiefs have put their full trust in him, and he has rewarded them for that. He finished with 121 yards on 25 carries on Monday against Washington. His workload has been absurd, but so has his production. It seems like every week we say, “He won’t be this good every week,” but so far he has been.
Clear Starters: Leonard Fournette
This is where Cook was last week and would be this week, but with his injury, Fournette’s all alone. The Jaguars — after bashing the Ravens in London and looking legit for the first time in seemingly forever — lost to the Jets, but that didn’t damper Fournette’s fantasy outlook at all. The former LSU star still got 28 touches — 24 on the ground and four through the air — for 145 total yards and a score. He has a touchdown in his first four professional games.
What was puzzling, though, was his absence in key situations, as jacksonville.com noted. Chris Ivory ended the game with 10 touches and Corey Grant with two. Fournette clearly outpaces both of those players and remains the top option in a run-first offense, though. Up next is a Pittsburgh defense that has struggled to stop the run. He’s a top-of-the-line starter.
Solid contributors: Alvin Kamara, Cooper Kupp, Deshaun Watson, Tarik Cohen, Christian McCaffrey, Joe Mixon, Evan Engram
This group loses several from last week, but they’re replaced by a trio of intriguing guys: Watson, Kamara and Kupp.
Watson has been wonderful the past couple of weeks but took it to another level on Sunday with a five-touchdown performance. A national champion at Clemson, Watson’s confidence is only climbing, and his impact as a dual threat makes him a must-own player. With Watson at the helm, the Texans are now a viable offense. (Hello, Lamar Miller and, finally, DeAndre Hopkins!) Grab Watson if he’s available.
Kamara is an especially prominent add in PPR roles, as his emergence alongside Mark Ingram has rendered Adrian Peterson essentially useless. Ingram got 46 snaps and Kamara 26, Peterson six, per nola.com. Kamara was terrific catching the ball out of the backfield, reeling in 10 receptions for 71 yards and a score. He also carried it five times for 25 yards, meaning he touched the ball on nearly 60 percent of his snaps. He’s not going to play a ton on early downs, but he’s a key weapon for Drew Brees on third down, and it’s clear that Brees trusts his explosive rookie. Kamara is still available in over half of leagues. It’s time to go get him.
Kupp joins these ranks after a nice performance against the Cowboys on Sunday. The Rams were solid offensively, and Kupp was a big part of that with five catches for 60 yards and a score. Sean McVay’s offense provides ample opportunities for slot men. As Kupp continues to grow into that role, his production should increase or at the very least hold steady.
Cohen saw his lightest workload of the season — just 10 touches — on Thursday night against the Packers. We’ll see how the Bears use new starting quarterback Mitchell Trubisky as he plays in his first regular-season game, but there’s a good chance they’ll try to acclimate him with some short, safe throws. Cohen could be a major benefactor of that strategy. Don’t panic after a poor Week 4. Cohen still belongs on your team, and he could be an important piece as teams hit byes in Week 5.
McCaffrey, like Cohen, got just 10 touches and, like Cohen, failed to break 50 total yards. Against a porous New England defense, Cam Newton was able to stretch the field, with both Kelvin Benjamin (four catches, 104 yards) and Devin Funchess (seven catches for 70 yards, two touchdowns) recording big days. McCaffrey’s absolutely worth keeping, though, because not every game will be as downfield-pass-friendly as Sunday’s contest.
The Bengals finally won a game! But that backfield continues to be a fantasy mess. Giovani Bernard had the most productive day — 79 yards — but that came on just six touches. Mixon got 21 touches for the second straight week, but had just 48 yards. And that was against a pitiful Browns defense. Still, Mixon’s workload keeps him in this category. Under new OC Bill Lazor, he’s the lead guy in Cincy.
Engram jumps from someone to keep an eye on to someone worth a roster spot as byes begin. The Giants first-rounder turned in a career-high six catches for a career-best 62 yards in rainy conditions in Tampa. He’s a low-risk streamer if needed: He’s never fallen short of four catches or 44 yards this year. If he can turn some of those targets into scores — he has just one this year — that’s all the better. The Giants and Chargers meet in a battle of 0-4 teams in Week 5.
Fringe roster guys: D’Onta Foreman, Kenny Golladay, Corey Davis, Samaje Perine
A week after registering two big plays in the passing game, Foreman came back to Earth in a rout of the Titans. The second-stringer out of Texas had 13 carries for a pedestrian 45 yards, but that’s a solid workload, and Foreman remains a Lamar Miller injury away from a major role. Remember, Miller fell apart late last year after a heavy workload; he’s getting another big workload this year. Just something to keep an eye on.
Golladay and Davis are in the same boat in terms of falling out of the “solid contributors” category and into the “fringe roster” category. Both missed their respective Week 4 contests and have now combined to play in as many games (four) as they’ve missed. Both are dealing with hamstring injuries, which can be especially tricky for wide receivers. Both are available in over 50 percent of leagues. Don’t fret just yet if they’re on your roster, but don’t feel the need to pick them up ASAP if they’re not.
Perine only remains on this list because Kelley keeps getting hurt. He left early in Week 2, didn’t play in Week 3 and then left early again in Week 4. That leaves Perine as the main first- and second-down back.
Keep an eye on: David Njoku, Mike Williams, Wayne Gallman, Elijah McGuire, JuJu Smith-Schuster
Boy oh boy was it ugly for the Browns against the Bengals. Njoku just barely remains on this list after a nearly silent performance. He’s completely touchdown dependent, and unless that changes, he’s better off in the free agency pool.
Williams still hasn’t returned from a preseason injury. But keep an eye out when he does, and how he plays when he does.
Gallman features in this piece for the first time after making his NFL debut on his 23rd birthday. The Giants’ pathetic rushing attack received a boost from the former Clemson Tiger, who totaled 50 yards and a score on 13 carries. If he takes over for the ineffective Paul Perkins, Gallman warrants fantasy attention.
With Matt Forte hurting, McGuire played a big role alongside Bilal Powell for the suddenly competent (or at least competitive?) Jets, who sit at 2-2. McGuire had a 69-yard score — his first in the NFL — and ended his day with 131 yards on just 12 touches. The Jets are rebuilding, so McGuire should continue to see time, even when Forte comes back. Remember, neither Forte nor Powell has a track record of staying especially healthy, either.
Smith-Schuster scored for the second time in three weeks and sent social media into a frenzy with his touchdown celebration. The rookie out of USC doesn’t quite warrant a roster spot yet, but if he keeps scoring, he just might soon.

Bubble breakdown: Arkansas helps itself with marquee road win
Arkansas’ win at South Carolina is its biggest of the season so far. (AP)
In Mike Anderson’s first five seasons at Arkansas, an inability to win on the road was his team’s fatal flaw.
The Razorbacks were 15-38 in road games, a huge reason they reached the NCAA tournament only once in that span.
Reversing that trend has been critical to Arkansas’ emergence as a contender for an NCAA bid this season. The Razorbacks improved to 5-4 on the road on Wednesday night and notched by far their most impressive victory of the season, upsetting 21st-ranked South Carolina 83-76 in Columbia.
Trailing by as many as 14 points early in the first half, Arkansas stormed back by shredding a South Carolina defense that hasn’t been up to its usual elite standards the past few games. Guards Dusty Hannahs and Jaylen Barford combined for 43 points and center Moses Kingsley added 16 as the Razorbacks shot 53.6 percent from the field and hit half their threes.
Arkansas’ victory was its first against a team that’s almost certainly NCAA tournament-bound. The best teams the Razorbacks (19-7, 8-5) had previously beaten were fellow SEC bubble team Tennessee and a Houston team on the outskirts of the NCAA tournament hunt.
Upsetting South Carolina gives Arkansas the best chance to emerge as the SEC’s fourth NCAA tournament team along with Kentucky, Florida and the Gamecocks. The Razorbacks have three winnable home games left along with tough road trips to Auburn and Florida.
Arkansas probably needs to win at least three of those games to feel secure entering the SEC tournament, but the Razorbacks are in much better position now than they were this morning. They have a marquee win and the confidence that their efficient, fast-paced offense can carve up the conference’s best defense.
WEDNESDAY’S BUBBLE WINNERS
Providence (16-11, 6-8): For a team expected to struggle after losing Kris Dunn and Ben Bentil to the NBA draft last spring, Providence has been surprisingly competitive in the Big East this season. The Friars are within two games of .500 in league play after following up Saturday’s big win over Butler by also toppling injury-plagued Xavier on Wednesday night. Egregiously bad losses to DePaul and Boston College mar Providence’s NCAA tournament resume, but back-to-back quality wins coupled with previous victories over Rhode Island and Marquette have the Friars starting to creep toward the fringes of the bubble picture. If they could somehow get to 9-9 in the Big East, that would give them reason to dare to dream entering the conference tournament.
Seton Hall (16-9, 6-7): Just like Providence took advantage of facing Xavier without Edmond Sumner and Trevion Bluiett, Seton Hall capitalized on getting Creighton without star point guard Maurice Watson. The Pirares roared to an 87-81 home victory to bolster their hopes of returning to the NCAA tournament for a second straight year. Seton Hall projects right near the cut line at this point thanks to a profile that includes a few decent wins and a couple of damaging losses. In addition to the Creighton win, the Pirates have also defeated South Carolina, Cal and Marquette, each of whom have realistic NCAA tournament hopes. But Seton Hall has also lost to the likes of Stanford and Saint John’s, leaving the Pirates work to do to ensure a bid.
Miami (17-8, 7-6): When coach Jim Larranaga suspended starting point guard Ja’Quan Newton for three games Wednesday afternoon, it seemed like an ill-timed blow to the Hurricanes hopes of wrapping up an NCAA tournament bid. Newton is dynamic playmaker who’s second on the team in points per game and leads in assists. Credit Miami for finding a way to win in Newton’s absence on Wednesday night. The Hurricanes turned aside fellow bubble team Georgia Tech 70-61 behind 21 points from Davon Reed. Miami would almost certainly make the field of 68 if the season ended today, but its remaining schedule offers no guarantees it will stay there. Still left to play are Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Virginia Tech and Virginia, three of whom will meet the Tigers on the road.
Other bubble winners: Iowa State (defeated Kansas State); Oklahoma State (defeated TCU); Wichita State (defeated Southern Illlinois) Illinois State (defeated Missouri State)
WEDNESDAY’S BUBBLE LOSERS
Indiana (15-12, 5-9): Anyone who didn’t bury Indiana after its home loss against Michigan on Sunday afternoon probably is ready to toss dirt on the Hoosiers now. They fell for the sixth time in seven games on Wednesday night, this time by just a single point at the hands of likely NCAA tournament-bound Minnesota. Giving Indiana slim hope are two marquee non-conference wins over Kansas and North Carolina, but the Hoosiers are also four games below .500 in a weaker-than-usual Big Ten and took a bad loss to Fort Wayne back in November. Three of their four remaining games are on the road, where they are just 1-6 so far this season.
Rhode Island (16-9, 8-5): Rhode Island had hoped to challenge for the Atlantic 10 title last season, but the year ended for the Rams with both its cornerstones sitting on the bench in sweatsuits. All-league guard E.C. Matthews tore his ACL in Rhode Island’s season opener and defensive standout Hassan Martin battled knee and ankle injuries all season before shutting things down in February. Both returned this season, inspiring optimism that this could be the year the Rams make the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1999. Alas, the Rams were swept by Dayton last Friday night and suffered an egregiously bad loss to Fordham on Wednesday. As a result, Rhode Island may need to win the Atlantic 10 tournament to get an at-large NCAA bid.
Other bubble losers: Kansas State (lost to Iowa State); Georgia Tech (lost to Miami); TCU (lost to Okahoma State).
