My love affair with Mercury knows no bounds. I simply love the vehicles for their “premium” look on all the classic Ford Models.

Despite being a luxury brand, they are still down to earth and have the regular ole Ford parts we know and love. Today’s Fords are complete shit, but back in the day they were great cars. Mercury was also as well, as it didn’t give up until the end. When Ford shut them down, it was kind of sad to see such beautiful vehicles go to waste. Which to many is a unpopular opinion.  Mercury was sort of a mid end type luxury dealer. Compared to Ford it was much better in style, power and luxury. While not as luxurious or fancy as Lincoln. Mercury was the mid tier, under dog very little knew about. Ever since their shut down in 2011, many people have completely forgotten they existed.  I currently own a 2000 Grand Marquis that is old as me, yet it starts every time. it is completely reliable and fun to drive. I want to rate my top five Mercury vehicles. As I am indeed, building a track Mercury this year (who knows what it will be!) I had a chance to speak with many people who had these vehicles. 

1. First Generation Mercury Cougar The Cougar was the response to the Mustang and Camaro. Now I am not talking about the third generation, despite it being just as powerful. if you were lucky to get a seventh equipped with a 5.0 Windsor V8. You would have a very powerful and exciting sleeper on your hands. I mostly want to focus on the First Generation, with its stylish looks and muscle feel. It feels more futuristic then it seems, all powered by a 4.7 - 7.0 V8. I heard these cars are very exciting drives, with great power and handling. 

2. Mercury Grand Marquis (Last gen) Mercury Grand Marquis was just a luxurious port of the Crown Vic, older models have better engines. As around 2004, they switched to plastic intake manifolds. However compared to other Panther Platforms, they are the most reliable. Older Marquis’s do not suffer the same fate as the Crown Vic brethren do. Newer models “bubble” models are powered by a 4.6 L V8. Depending on the trim and model year, you can expect to get a decent 224-250 HP stock. (Mind wear and tear) As most of these cars made up of Mercury’s sales, as well as were packed in every grandparent’s garage. You can pick one up for as low as 1,200 USD in very good, almost excellent condition. Bonus if it was garaged or well taken care of. These cars are however, gas guzzlers, so do keep that in mind. Many fans and owners often supercharge or turbo charge with modifications. They do make great track cars like the Crown Vic, and their handling is forgiving. They had backup cooling systems as well to keep that big engine cool, I have never seen my own overheat even in near 100F in idle or pushed.

3. Mercury Sable (Last gen) The Sable was the weak part of the brand. In 2010, the last year Mercury was selling. It sold only 35, however they do make up in power rather then sales.  Most Mercury Sables can be classified as good sleepers. (2010/2009 yr) With a decent V6 producing 265 HP stock, they could be modified to really haul some ass. Depends completely on you! The older Sables however, suffer greatly in power.

4. Mercury Capri (First-Second Gen) The Mercury Capri was all 1980s pony in a imported look. Back during the 1990s and 1980s, imported cars were all the rage. Mercury, obviously wanted to get in on the pop up headlight craze too. Decided to ship out a new revised Mercury Capri. Combining the looks of the previous generation and the new generation. What was produced was a performance pony for the buck. With the Mercury luxury and Ford love. The Capri had all three of the goodies. A inline 4, V6 and V8.  All producing varying amounts of power and performance for respective trims, with that famous Ford mod-ability. All slapped together in a very import inspired, sporty hatchback.

Its peak years were the First and Second, you can pick some up for 5k USD to 3K (third). If you manage to snag one, they could make great track cars for their weight and power.

5. Mercury Colony Park

For as uncommon and out of fashion as it is. Our parents may have remembered their first car being the family Station Wagon. Believe it or not, the Colony park, which was just a boxy port of the Grand Marquis in wagon form. Was very popular and very well known in the Mercury community for its power. Many people find these cars to have power, as well as enough room to live in it. Some people even go camping in the wagons. 

Some production models went out with a carb 5.8L V8, however these are rare finds. You may end up getting a 4.9L fuel injected as they are more common.  They hold their value well and are even going up in value over time. You can pick one up for 5-10K USD. Majority are now project cars for beginner tuners, as they are forgiving and very reliable. Most are restore projects with exception, just remember, they are a bit of a rarity in some parts of the US. 

If you are lucky enough to find one of these beasts in the wild, do snap a photo or at least. Take a moment to appreciate some of the last American beasts.

The World's Fastest Ford Mustangs

When tasked with finding the world’s fastest Ford Mustangs, I thought this would be an easy job. Firstly, consult the Guinness book of records for any official entries, then job done, easy. Well, The first hurdle was the only entries for a Mustang were ‘Largest Parade of Mustangs’ and ‘the most virtual signatures on an electronic greeting card.’ Nothing with the words ‘fastest’ or ‘quickest.’

So, with no official speed entries, it’s down to strictly unofficial records. The next bunch of caveats, the fastest off the line, fastest 0-60mph, fastest top speed, fastest over a quarter mile, fastest over a half mile, fastest over a mile, fastest stock or mod’ed. The list goes on and on…

So, with most of the headlines of ‘Fastest’ this or that, here’s is a sloppily put together list of some of the most potent Mustang muscle cars out there. These are either the fastest in the Mustang community or claim to be the fastest in a certain category. As a side note, the 2020 Shelby Mustang GT500 promises to be the most powerful production Mustang yet, but we will have to wait and see how this beast performs.

Fastest Manual Ford Housing a 4.6-liter 4V Mod motor, now with Precision 62mm turbochargers, the 1998 ‘TT Minion’ Mustang can produce 1,500 horsepower and do a 7.92 second quarter-mile at 180mph, all with manual shifting. Is it the fastest in the world? Who knows, but it’s up there.

Fastest Quarter Mile Drag Radial Car A quarter-mile time in 5.92 seconds at 250mph on drag radials. This thing has a Proline 526ci. V8 with two 94mm turbochargers.

Fastest none street-legal production Mustang This honor goes to the 5.2L Ford Mustang Cobra Jet for the 50th anniversary of the Mustang. Only 68 of these were built and although not street legal, they can hit the quarter-mile in the mid-eight seconds at 150 mph. With a little helping hand from a 3.0 litre Whipple supercharger, it’s arguably one of the fastest production Mustangs around.

Fastest quarter-mile from Drag Times This quarter-mile time was recorded over at Drag Times for a 1969 Mustang driven by Bill Sexton. The pass was recorded on March 15th, 2004 at 6.860 seconds at 204mph. The engine is a 712ci. Pontiac with a 2 Stage Fogger nitrous kit.

Fastest Shelby GT500 Mustang This video of the ‘The Devil’s Reject’ Shelby GT500 Mustang gives a claimed 6.76 seconds @ 206mph in the quarter mile. It certainly has the goods with a 5.8liter/349.ci. aluminum block with 2,200 horsepower with help from a Precision 94mm turbocharger.

Fastest S550 Mustang with IRS The fastest S550 Mustang with independent rear suspension seemingly goes to a 2017 Mustang GT by Sheldon Lewis of Straight Performance Racing. The 7.9 second run at 179 MPH was done with a SPR Built Coyote Engine, 88mm single turbo system and Powertrain Specialties TH400.

However, here’s Jordan Weir with his 2015 Mustang that rocketed to 245.1 mph at The Texas Mile in early 2017. Over 2,000 horsepower comes from a Trinity 5.8-liter engine with two 76mm Borg-Warner turbos and 2013 GT500 intercooler.

Fastest production street legal Mustang The 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 sure has some potent power under the hood with a supercharged 5.8-liter 32-valve V8, producing 662HP. This comes out at 3.5 seconds for a 0-60MPH time and a roundabout 11.8 second quarter-mile time. The GT500 also has a claimed 200-mph top speed.

Shelby GT350 Half Mile World Record A best pass of 193.5 mph.

This is not an exhaustive list, but will hopefully give you a small insight into some of the fastest Mustangs around.

Forces Of Time: Does A Properly Prepared 1989 Ford Thunderbird SC Have A Draw?

Everyone always wants to make a crack about building the wrong car, until someone puts together the “wrong car” the right way. Ever notice that? Nobody liked 1973-77 Chevelles, it seemed, until Popular Hot Rodding built up the “Project Talladega” 1975 Chevrolet Chevelle Laguna S-3 and the random builds started appearing here and there. Now, people see the potential in them a little more clearly. Take the “Project Raven” Imperial…most people would simply daub it off as a failed Chrysler product, but show someone the pictures from Buddy Arringon’s NASCAR days where he campaigned one or the “Wozniak Imperial”, a super-clean Pro Street build, and you start to see people gain respect. Part of that might be because these cars are getting older and rarer, sure, but that isn’t all that’s going on. Or is it?

One of the most ignored platforms of the last thirty years, in my personal opinion, is the Ford MN-12: 1989-97 Thunderbird and Mercury Cougar, and the slightly different 1993-98 Lincoln Mark VIII. The basis of the machine is simple enough: independent suspension front and rear, enough room in the engine bay to accommodate the Mod motor, able to handle the older Windsor block, and available with the only Ford-sourced 3.8L V6 worth having, the supercharged variation. The SC (Super Coupe) also had an available manual transmission, four-wheel disc brakes, variable assist power steering, and smooth, aerodynamic lines that NASCAR was putting to good use. Truth be told, NASCAR might have been the only entity of the day to give the last generation T-bird it’s due…even Ford themselves were disappointed with the whole program, and the guy in charge of bringing it to light retired, angry at the company and out of favor with the upper echelon.

I’ll be honest, I dream about a T-bird packing either a very stout 302 or a copy of the teased but canceled SVT variation that sported a supercharged 4.6 between the fenders. But there’s plenty to like about one of the blown V6 SC cars. Sure, 80% of the argument involves the three pedals and five forward gears, but force-fed V6 engines can be plenty fun…ask a Buick guy. This car has some age wear that the seller is very honest about, but even with the flaws in the paint, we see potential in this Thunderbird. What about you?

Wasting little time, Ulloa moves up, drops his snake in the beams, floors the gas, and with a flash of the tree he’s off like a missile.

“The Minion” tears from the line with its turbochargers force-feeding the 281-cube V8 that’s producing 1,500 horsepower worth of rear-wheel thrust and generating more than 2g of acceleration. With the 4.6 screaming like a 747 on take-off, Ulloa kicks the clutch and rips the Tremec Magnum into Second gear.

The 60-foot clocks whip past in just 1.19 seconds, and somehow the Mickey Thompson 275 Radial Pro tires fight for grip and win. We’ve managed to go from 305 hp at the crank to 500, 600, 800, 1,200, and now 1,500 rear-wheel horsepower.

“I really built it to have fun and we’ve continued to make more power and go quicker. Ulloa’s scorecard shows wins from the Mod Nationals Stick-Shift class, TRC Street Kings, NMRA Terminator vs. GT500, the popular TREMEC Stock Shift Shootout, and most recently, True Street at NMCA in Bradenton, Florida and TX2K19 in Texas. His quickest pass to date is 7.67 at 184 mph.

The interior is all business with Kirkey seats and a full cage. As you can imagine, it will be getting upgraded to match the 7-second capabilities.

Winning is never easy, nor is running 7’s, for that matter. Making this Cobra go like a scalded cat and maintain durability is the brainchild of Josh Levin at Levin Motorsports in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The engine starts with a 4.6L Ford aluminum Teksid block that was bored 0.020-inch over. It was then filled with a Kellogg crank, Manley rods, and custom JE pistons. Levin selected a Triangle Speed oil pump to supply the lifeblood along with a tricked-out Moroso oil pan to seal things up.

Induction is handled by a duo of Precision Turbo 68s that feed the 105mm Accufab throttle body, then the crazy one-off Hogan’s intake with a built-in air-to-water intercooler. “I’m not going to lie,” Ulloa told us, “I love the attention the intake gets. At first I though it was a mistake getting something so huge, but it makes a statement and says, ‘I came to party!’”

Nothing to see here- just your basic 7-second street-legal Mustang.

Levin went with Ford “C” heads that were massaged by MPR and feature a quartet of Comp camshafts that operate each of the 32 valves. At wide-open throttle, the intake is jammed with 42 psi of boost pressure. The compressed air is mixed with a supply of E90 fuel delivered from the stock tank with a trio of Walbro 465 fuel pumps that feed Fore Innovations rails and eight ID 2000 injectors. For EFI, he relies on an AEM system to control injector pulse and ignition timing.

With so much power on tap, Ulloa could have stuffed an automatic behind the modular mill, but fun factor was increased with a Tremec six-speed Magnum. The gearbox was modified by RPM Transmissions for quicker shifting and it retains the H pattern and overdrive.

“With the clutch we’re running, it drives great on the street. I have to be really careful on the street, though, because things happen quickly. I prefer to be on the track, where time slows down, and I can focus on driving the car hard. I’ll take you through a typical run,” he told us.

Here’s another look at the custom Hogan’s intake. From this angle you can see the short, but effective runners.

“I normally do a short Second-gear burnout with only little smoke, then I roll out and get back in First gear. As I pre-stage, I wait for my competitor to lock in his Stage bulb, then I hold my Line-Lock button to prevent the car from rolling. I bump the car in and smash the throttle to 100-percent. When the tree drops I let go of the clutch pedal and wait for that sweet sound of 9,000 rpm. It comes fast, and I kick the clutch and catch Second gear. The steering wheel usually feels light since it sometimes stands up in Second, but the traction control helps with the power management. At 9,000 rpm, I grab Third gear, then I do it again for Forth Gear. The car usually feels amazing, and I hit the parachute lever about 150 feet before the finish line to make sure we’re slowing down. Depending on the track we run mid-7s to low 8s,” he added. “It’s a blast every time.”

Ulloa has spent years fine-tuning in the clutch and the UPR suspension, and he’s always on the hunt for quicker elapsed times and higher trap speeds. “What’s in the bellhousing is a top-secret unit that allows for street driving, yet it has mad grip to get the power from the flywheel to the transmission with controlled slipping and locking,” he told us. “I still use the Ford 8.8-inch rear instead of a 9-inch. “The rear is pretty tough, especially with Strange internals, and it has a stock-type suspension with UPR parts. We have it hooking so well that it’s hard to control the wheelies at times. I use Viking shocks and struts, Aerospace brakes, and everything seems to work well together.”

Ulloa uses a stock Tremec shifter with a Liberty handle to ram the gears.

Ulloa is quick to point out that his team of supporters are the ones who deserve the credit. “UPR has believed in me for a long time and Trueline Collision sprayed the fresh Chrome Yellow. I use Optic Armor for windows, they are safe and save a lot of weight. I get asked what it weighs often, and it’s 3,100 in Outlaw trim and 3,300 on the street with me in the car.” Yandro also praised Josh Levin at Levin Motorsports, Hard Target Images, Juggernaut Power, Certified Transmission, and of course his family and close friends.

Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2019: Interesting Sales + Mega Gallery

It doesn’t take a whole lot of persuasion in the middle of winter to get car enthusiasts excited about a trip to the Arizona desert. While many collectors’ cars are tucked away under covers in heated garages for the wet and snowy months, the sunny Scottsdale skies and warm weather make for a welcome reprieve from less fortunate climes. In fact, we saw plenty of great classic cars—top down, even—out on the roads around town while we visited for the annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction.

This year’s nine-day affair was Barrett-Jackson’s most successful auction ever, with more than $118 million in sales, compared to $106.8 million in 2018. The all-important sell-through rate exceeded 99 percent, as is typical from Barrett-Jackson’s aggressive no-reserve policy on most vehicles. No-reserve cars are guaranteed sellers and guaranteed commission in the auction house’s coffers. In the end, Barrett-Jackson found more than 1,800 cars new homes and registered more than 5,300 bidders.

We spent a 12-hour day wandering the seemingly endless rows of cars for sale, and there were truly all types here. From AMC Pacers to mil-spec Humvees, Ford Mustangs to Ferrari F430s, trailer queens to tractors, everyone is likely to find something they like; whether or not they can afford it is the only question. Of course, that’s not a concern for everyone, like the winning bidder who spent a huge $2.1 million for the bragging rights of scoring the first production 2020 Toyota Supra with VIN 20201. A crazy price considering the Supra’s base MSRP of $50,920? Not when you consider all proceeds went to charity, resulting in a massive tax deduction for a very lucky one-percenter. Here are several other vehicles that caught our attention as we combed the auction tents at Barrett-Jackson’s Westworld venue:

2006 Ford GT Heritage Edition | Sold, $533,500

While Ford auctioned off the first-ever 2020 Ford GT Heritage Edition for charity (it sold for $2.5 million), previous-generation Ford GTs—all eight of them—caught our eye. Three of those GTs were Heritage Edition cars, with the traditional blue and orange Gulf Oil livery. If you read our pre-auction coverage, you saw we recommended the highest-mileage car of the three as the one to buy. Why? With just more than 3,000 miles on the odometer, you’d be able to drive it a heck of a lot more than the other two, which showed 75 and 288 miles. We also figured the buy-in would be dramatically cheaper. Turns out the car with the highest mileage fetched the highest price, $533,500, while the 75-mile car sold the cheapest, at $462,000. Surprised? As The Who said, “I Can’t Explain.” Maybe this bizarro-world bidding will encourage the buyers of the lower-mileage GTs to actually drive them.

1993 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra R | Sold, $132,000

Fox-bodied Mustangs have been on our radar for a year or two now, and you could consider the SVT Cobra R the mack daddy of them all. This example, from the very last year of Fox-body production, was number 11 of 107 SVT Cobra R models built to send off the third-generation Mustang, and it was driven just 500 miles since it rolled off the assembly line; it still wore the factory plastic protective wrap over its seats. R versions of the Mustang SVT Cobra were sold as race-ready cars to those with competition licenses and featured deleted radio, speakers, air conditioning, and fog lamps—along with no rear seats, sound deadening, or power options. The shocks were adjustable Konis, the brakes were larger Kelsey Hayes units, and the wheels were a huge for the time at 17×8 inches. The price paid was a world record for maybe the nicest Fox-body Mustang in the world. Still, folks shouldn’t have any delusions about the value of the Mustang LX notchback rusting away in their backyard.

1997 Dodge Viper GTS | Sold, $55,000

We’re bullish on first-generation Vipers, especially the GTS coupe models. With aesthetics that recall a modern version of the classic Shelby Daytona Coupes, a V-10 engine, and honest-to-goodness motorsports history, we think enthusiasts 20 years from now will be talking about the “Viper that got away” as people do with Cobras today. This example wasn’t completely original, but its extensive modifications were done by well-known Archer Brothers Racing. The engine was built by the same guys who assembled the Team Oreca Viper engines that did battle at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, among other races. With just more than 1,000 miles on the clock and uprated suspension, brakes, and cooling, this one was special and well worth its winning bid.

2001 Honda S2000 | Sold, $49,500

Remember when 1990s Japanese sports cars were just used cars? So do we, and we all know that’s not the case anymore. With an immaculate, low-mileage 1994 Toyota Supra Turbo recently selling for more than $120,000 on Bring a Trailer, Japanese cars are firmly in the collectible category. This early S2000 from the AP1 series is the most desirable of the bunch with its 8,800-rpm redline and more playful suspension setup; later cars were stroked for more displacement, with a reduced redline and less aggressive suspension settings. With just 921 miles on the showroom-condition car, its new owner has a solid investment on his hands if he can keep from actually driving it—no easy task. Another Barrett-Jackson bargain.

It’s easy to look at the stratospheric numbers many collector cars bring and moan about being priced out of the market. Who would have thought some of the same cars we bought and enjoyed for a penance years ago would now be reserved for those with 10-car garages on waterfront property? Someday, maybe we’ll say the same about Cadillac Allantés. With a $60,000 price tag when new, genuine Pininfarina coachwork, and a 4.5-liter V-8 under the hood, this 20,000-mile Allanté from the second-to-last year of production was a solid buy. On the road these are still sharp-looking cars that turn heads, and although this one doesn’t have the wonderful 4.6-liter, 32-valve Northstar engine under its hood like the 1993 final-year examples.

Classic SUVs are hot, hot, hot, and we’re seeing them come to auctions in increasing numbers. From early American versions like the Ford Bronco and Chevrolet Blazer to Toyota FJs and early Range Rovers, there’s a buyer for them all. This is a Bronco from the first year of production (referred to by Ford at the time as “the first four-wheel-drive sports car”), and after all these years it still has its matching-numbers 2.8-liter straight-six engine under the hood. Making about 104 horsepower and paired to a three-speed manual, the previous owner gave this Bronco a frame-off restoration. We couldn’t stop staring at it. The price paid seems market correct—for now—and resto-modded examples with more modern powertrains are also increasingly popular.

When you work the SEMA show, it can be a dizzying experience. There are more parts and cars than you’re physically able to comprehend. Every manufacturer is in attendance with their latest components ready to show them off to buyers, sellers, and media folks like us. We are so busy checking out new parts, running from hall to hall, doing FB Live videos, IG posts, web galleries, and online Web stories during the event, but we also have an eye on the print content you’re reading right now. After all, we can’t cover everything SEMA via galleries, FB live videos, and IG posts. The easiest way for us to tell about SEMA is a full story on the trendsetting and hard hitting parts each manufacturer hopes to make a mark in 2019.

One of the more popular wheel companies in the Mustang market, Billet Specialties was at SEMA showing off a variety of wheel designs. When we think of Billet Specialties, we are instantly reminded of its drag offerings. However, the company has a full lineup of street wheels, as well, especially from its B-Forged line.

It’s no secret that 1961-1979 F100s and 1966-1977 Broncos are hot right now. BSI Performance is one company hoping to catch lightning in a bottle with its 1966-1977 Bronco chassis offerings. BSI’s Bronco chassis features a mandrel bent frame, Currie Dana 44 axles, triangulated 4-link rear suspension, a Borgeson power steering box, King coilovers, Wilwood brakes, and Speedway Engineering front and rear sway bars. Best of all, though, in our eyes is that you can also get a BSI Bronco chassis outfitted with a Coyote engine and transmission.

Arguably one of our favorite SEMA booths, each year Ford Performance rolls out new products aimed squarely at the Mustang performance market. Obviously the hot news for 2018 is the Gen 3 Coyote engine from the 2018 Mustang GT. The Gen 3 crate engine is rated at 460 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. We were able to install this engine, along with a Ford Performance control pack into our latest Week to Wicked 1967 Mustang. The big difference between the Gen 1, Gen 2, and Gen 3 Coyote engine is that the Gen 3 features direct and port fuel injection. So, with most of the headlines of ‘Fastest’ this or that, here’s is a sloppily put together list of some of the most potent Mustang muscle cars out there. These are either the fastest in the Mustang community or claim to be the fastest in a certain category. I've seen people post pictures of their new projects, so I figured I'd post pictures of mine along with it's ridiculous story about terrible luck and people from the car community coming together.

TLDR at the end for those who (understandably) don't wanna read a super long story.

In May of this year, I made a terrible/amazing decision. I bought a '99 Mustang GT automatic convertible that (barely) ran from a Pick N Pull for $1,000. It ran and drove from the yard, however not quite as well as I thought. http://ift.tt/2Epnx67 (picture from the lot)

I thought she was beautiful, except that the convertible top's plastic vinyl window was so dirty that it was impossible to see out of, even after washing it dozens of times.

Being an enthusiast who hadn't had a project before, I was super excited to start doing mods immediately and getting the car into better shape. Then, about two days in, a rod came a-knocking on the engine. I realized I would have to put in a new one, and the next day found that a shift solenoid in the auto transmission had blown out and that there was metal in the pan.

I figured that since I had wanted to at some point, there would be no better time to swap the car's transmission to a manual than when the transmission would have to be removed anyways.

I had a family friend/mechanic help me with the project, and although he was charging me next to nothing and I was paying him what I could, he had to work 7 days a week to support his household and I ran out of money once the old engine and trans were both out. At this point, the car begins to sit for a few weeks, as I had nowhere near enough knowledge or skill to reinstall an engine and transmission.

At this same point, during this limbo, I rode with my friend to a car meet. He decided to meet up with some friends in a little group on the way so that they can all drive together to the meet. One of those friends, some guy named Frank, also had a sn95 mustang, so I introduced myself and followed him on instagram. He had a really cool car he called the "stealth mare" and I loved what he had done with it. Anyways, moving on.

A couple weeks later, I was not sure what to do to keep this build moving. I couldn't afford a "real" mechanic or a shop, and I couldn't do the project myself even though I had basically all the tools. Out of sheer desperation, I sent this Frank guy a DM hoping he could help me. He was super open to giving me a hand on the project (more accurately me giving him a hand since he actually knew what he was doing, but I digress) and a day or two later we got to work. Even when I offered to pay him when I could, he was super nice and refused to take some money for helping me.

After around a month's worth of weekends, we finally got everything done. However, I had gotten some misinformation and Ford is evil. I thought that the car would be completely unable to start with the auto trans' computer, and had bought an ECU from Pick N Pull which I had installed. Thus, the car wouldn't start. I loaded the car up on a tow truck and sent it to a dealership to reset the evil PATS anti-theft system (because I didn't know most locksmiths could do it).

After 4 days of waiting, they said the car still wouldn't start even though the PATS was reset. There was also a decent exhaust leak from a missing nut, you'll understand why I'm saying that soon enough. I got the car towed back to my house in defeat. They told me the car would crank but not start. I was heartbroken, being so close yet so far. After around a day of it sitting on my driveway once again, I dejectedly got into the car because at that point I at least wanted to hear the car crank after all the work I had put in.

However, everything in the car just sounded off. Electronics weren't quite right, and the car didn't do squat when I turned the key. It seemed to me that after sitting for 2-3 months, the battery was out of wack. I took it over to my auto parts store (where it had a warranty, thank God) to get it tested. They gave it back to me and said it tested fine and charged right up. I threw it back into the car, still no dice. I thought something was still wrong, so I took the battery out of my Grandma's Mercury Sable (Basically a rebadged Ford Taurus) and shoved it under the hood. I remember literally shedding a few tears of joy. I texted Frank about our little victory, and he came right by to see our project finally roar to life. To be honest, I wish I could have kept the exhaust leak a little bit because the sound was fantastic.

Unfortunately, it wasn't all that easy after that. Time for less pictures and more problems.

I took the car for a test drive, and it drove great. Except that shifting into reverse was a nightmare. Grinding non-stop and sometimes it just refused to let me shift into reverse. After driving it around for a couple days, fixing the exhaust leak, and getting the required paperwork for move permits (bought the car with absolutely no title) to drive it on the road, I had 2 days to decide whether or not the car would be ready for me to drive it to University, as I would be moving to Riverside from the San Francisco area to start classes.

Sadly, the next day it refused to go into any gear without a battle, and I realized the car wasn't in the mechanical shape to drive 400 miles to school, or to survive in its current state after that. I had to make the super tough decision to leave my newly running car at home to be checked out in my absence by, dun dun dun....a shop.

Sure enough, the transmission that I had gotten from the wrecking yard was trash, the clutch I ordered for it was all messed up, and the valve covers were leaking oil from a crack. I let them go ahead and change out the transmission (family friends, gave me incredibly good rates and did a perfectly fine job), and try to put everything back together.

Then came the issue of timing. After being at school for around a month, the car was almost back together (it took them a while because they were doing it after hours for insanely cheap for me). I wanted to bring the car to Riverside, to finally drive my baby. I was flying home on a Friday, and on the Monday before they found that after trying to patch one of the cracks that was leaking oil, the entire valve cover needed to be replaced. I ordered one from a dealership in my area that could be picked up Wednesday, and I was hoping it would come in in time. Sure enough, it came Wednesday....and was the wrong bolt pattern. Damnit Ford.

I decided then to instead order aftermarket valve covers from Trickflow (10/10 would recommend BTW), as they were the correct pattern, and were a pair of aluminum covers instead of ugly plastic. These looked way nicer and cost the same as a single cover straight from Ford. I ordered them on whatever the fastest shipping method was for an extra $50, and they were set to arrive the same Friday I flew in.

My goal, if everything went perfectly, was to get the new valve covers and get them installed Friday, use Saturday and Sunday to stress test the living hell out out of the car to make sure it would survive the drive down to SoCal, and then Monday to take it to my school in Riverside.

Somehow, everything almost went perfectly according to plan. Friday night, I picked up the car in perfect running condition, and proceeded to put ~300 miles on it over the weekend before I was to drive it 400 more to school.

I did mention that I got the car with no title. This meant that to get plates/a title, the car needed to pass a brake/light inspection and a smog test. The Brake and Light was done, but the o2 sensors didn't seem to have all their information dialed in before leaving Monday. However, my 60 day failed smog pass (needed to drive the car on the roads) was about to expire at that point, since I got it before the first manual transmission gave up on life. I thus decided to get the car smogged on the trip back to school, approximately an hour's drive away.

A side note, the car's air conditioning wasn't running at the time due to electrical adaptation issues with the new computer. The day climbed to over 100 degrees, and after my stop for my smog check (which I passed) I began to head towards my school.

This was also my first manual car, so I wasn't used to operating a clutch. This meant not only that I was bad at it, but that my leg was not used to the workout that is an SN95 clutch over long drives. I got on the freeway to sit in agonizing, blisteringly hot LA traffic for about 15 minutes before I realized that I wouldn't survive if I tried to do this all the way home. Thus, I got off the freeway and tried to used main roads to make my way to school. I knew it would turn an hour into probably two, but there was little traffic (all based on stop lights, so tolerable for a new clutch operator) and it was much less hot/stressful as the car was actually moving.

Then things went wrong yet again. About 45 minutes (in that traffic) from my school, I was driving through a city called Azusa, when I heard a super loud hissing sound and saw yellowish smoke billowing into the car's cabin. I assumed my car was overheating and that it was coolant, and I thus pulled over and called trusty AAA to come take my car. I wanted to check the cooling system and all, but I had no tools/method at school and thus had a shop pressure test the system to find that everything was alright. In reality, I had melted a piece of a rubber air conditioning line, shooting Freon everywhere. Thankfully, no big issues, got the car back on the road.

Then, after a lot of time and money spent on some mods and cleanup, the car began to take shape into what it is today. I'm super happy with it, and even though it was more painful and expensive than I ever could have imagined, I wouldn't have had it any other way. I met so many new friends from the car, learned so much about how to work on cars, and now have a project I'm proud of.

TLDR: Bought a junkyard mustang for a grand, the engine and trans died immediately after, swapped it to a manual and put in a new engine with help from the car community in my area, and now have a dope project that's accumulated around 5K miles in the past 3 months with no issues.
