Printing Custom Mylar Bags: An In-Depth How to Exploration of Digital and Flexo Printing Techniques
Custom Mylar bags are a stellar choice for brands looking to combine robust packaging with eye-catching design, especially prevalent in sectors like food, cannabis, and health care products. In the world of printing on these durable, barrier-enhancing bags, two primary technologies reign supreme: digital printing and flexographic (flexo) printing. This extensive guide delves into each method, detailing their processes, benefits, and when to use one over the other.
Decoding Mylar Bags
Mylar, technically known as biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate (PET), is favored for its excellent protective qualities, including moisture resistance and durability. It’s a go-to for products needing a longer shelf life and consistent freshness.
Before You Print: Key Steps
Before setting the printing wheels in motion, consider these critical steps:
Design Mastery: The right design transcends aesthetics, reflecting your brand’s ethos and meeting packaging specifications with flair.
Choosing the Right Bag: Factor in the product’s needs—size, features like zip-locks or clear windows, and the overall style of the bag.
Prep the Material: Mylar often requires specific treatments to ensure ink adherence during printing.
Digital Printing on Mylar Bags
Digital printing impresses with its direct approach, where designs from digital files spring to life on the substrate through inkjet or laser technology.
Step-by-Step Process
Digital Design: Transform your creative vision into a digital file compatible with the printing machinery, using tools like Adobe Illustrator.
Set Up: Position the Mylar bags in the printer, tuned to accommodate the material’s specifics.
The Printing Dance: The printer interprets the digital file, meticulously layering CMYK inks to recreate your design on the bag.
Ink Setting: Post-printing, some inks may need curing to secure their bond with the Mylar.
Why Go Digital?
Quick Turnaround: Skip the setup complexities and dive straight into printing.
Small Batch Friendly: No hefty setup fees, making it perfect for limited runs or bespoke orders.
Precision and Color: Achieve sharp, vibrant prints that catch the eye.
Adaptable: Easily tweak designs between runs without financial heartache.
Potential Drawbacks
Ink Stability: May require additional protective measures to enhance durability.
Cost Efficiency: Larger orders can become costly compared to flexo printing.
Flexographic Printing on Mylar Bags
Flexo printing, a sophisticated evolution of letterpress, uses flexible plates to apply ink onto materials like Mylar, marrying old-school technique with modern efficiency.
How It Works
Plate Crafting: Each color in your design calls for its own flexible plate.
Inking Up: Plates kiss the ink rollers, transferring the design sequentially to the Mylar as it moves through the press.
Curing the Print: A drying phase ensures the ink melds flawlessly with the Mylar.
Flexo’s Strengths
Bulk Efficiency: Once the setup is complete, flexo churns out large volumes swiftly, making it cost-effective.
Lasting Impressions: Uses robust inks that endure, ideal for long-term display and functionality.
Material Versatility: Adapts to a wide range of inks and materials.
Considerations
Upfront Investment: Initial costs can be high due to the need for custom plates.
Rigidity: Switching designs or running small batches can be economically impractical.
Which Printing Path to Take?
Your choice between digital and flexo printing will hinge on several factors:
Volume: Digital suits low quantities, while flexo excels at high-volume orders.
Budget: Consider digital for minimal upfront costs; flexo for larger investments but lower costs over time.
Design Complexity: Digital is king for intricate, colorful designs.
Durability Demands: Opt for flexo when longevity and wear resistance are paramount.
Wrapping Up
Printing on custom Mylar bags is not just about aesthetics; it’s a strategic choice that enhances product integrity and elevates brand presence. Whether opting for the swift adaptability of digital or the enduring power of flexo, aligning your method with your project’s needs ensures your product stands out beautifully and effectively.

Analysis of Printing Color Sequence in Flexographic Printing
In color printing, the typical approach is to use four colors: yellow, magenta, cyan, and black, which are printed in a specific sequence. Theoretically, there are twenty-four different printing color sequences possible with these four colors, and any sequence should yield satisfactory results. However, different sequences can lead to varying color effects on the printed material. A rational printing color sequence enhances the colors, makes the image closer to the original, and can improve clarity and depth. Additionally, it protects the paper surface, increases product gloss, and facilitates registration. This is particularly important in color printing, especially in packaging, when using more than four colors, spot colors, or full coverage.
In flexographic printing, color plates often use solid colors, and the water-based inks typically have lower transparency. Therefore, when determining the registration order of the color plates, it's essential to consider whether the overlapping colors meet the original requirements and achieve a good registration effect, as this directly impacts the product's quality. The printing color sequence is mainly determined by the design of the original and the chosen plate-making order but can also vary based on product characteristics and process requirements.
In general, the color sequence in flexographic printing is determined by the following factors:
1. Inks with strong coverage should be printed first. Typically, light colors are printed first, followed by darker colors. 2. When printing multiple colors without a dark outline, the dark outline should be printed first. 3. If a dark color is needed to cover the edges of the image outline to eliminate fringing, it must be printed last. However, if this dark color also serves as the registration standard, it can be partially printed first and then registered with the other colors, with the dark outline printed last. 4. The main color tone of the image is generally arranged to be printed last. 5. For images containing both halftones and full-color solids, the halftone and solid colors should be printed separately to adjust pressure and use different inks, ensuring print quality.
In three-color printing, the typical color sequence is: cyan – magenta – yellow, with solid densities around 1.6 for cyan, 1.4 for magenta, and 1.2 for yellow.
Next, let’s discuss an important application area of flexographic printing: the color sequence in plastic flexible packaging printing.
Plastic flexible packaging printing usually starts with a white ink base to enhance other colors. This method has several advantages: first, white ink has the best affinity for polyolefin films (PE, PP), providing strong adhesion; second, white reflects all colors, making the printed colors more vibrant; third, it thickens the ink layer, enriching the print's depth and dimensionality.
Flexographic printing on plastic flexible packaging can be categorized into "inner printing" and "surface printing." Inner printing involves using a reverse image plate to transfer ink to the inner side of a transparent film, producing a correct image on the film's outer surface. Surface printing, in contrast, has the opposite color sequence. For surface printing, the typical sequence is: white – yellow – magenta – cyan – black. For inner printing, it is: black – cyan – magenta – yellow – white.
Comparatively, inner printed materials are brighter, more colorful, fade-resistant, moisture-proof, wear-resistant, durable, long-lasting, non-stick, and non-breakable. Since the ink is printed on the inner side of the film (sandwiched between two film layers), it does not contaminate the packaged items, complying with hygiene regulations.
Explore our book printing services on the Printing in China page.
Flexographic printing machines are multi-color printers, using a wet-on-dry overlay method with at least six colors, typically ten, and can reach up to twelve colors, including UV and infrared glossing. The printed products primarily consist of decorative printed materials featuring text, images, halftones, and solids, with some requiring metallic inks and gloss. Therefore, the color sequence in flexographic printing is highly flexible. When determining the printing color sequence, one must analyze specific product requirements to achieve the best sequence. For example, halftones might be printed first, followed by solids, then metallic inks, and finally gloss. In some cases, if the ink color is too dark and the anilox roller cannot provide the necessary thickness, the color may need to be reprinted using another unit. The sequence for four-color halftones should not be changed arbitrarily. For spot color printing, the general rule is to print lighter colors first to enhance the brightness of the darker colors when overlaid. For spot colors printed using the overlay method, the sequence should have the secondary color printed first, followed by the primary color.

Understanding the Flexographic Flat Printer
Understanding the Flexographic Flat Printer Flexographic printing, often referred to as flexo, is a versatile and widely used technique for creating high-quality printed materials. Particularly popular in the packaging and label sector due to its efficiency and ability to produce vibrant, detailed prints, flexographic printing delivers consistent and reliable results.Get more news about Flexographic Flat Printer, you can vist our website!
The basis for effective flexo printing is the printing plates, which are usually manufactured from soft and resilient rubber or flexible photopolymer. During the process of flexo printing, images are separated into a minimum of four process colours - cyan, magenta, yellow, and black - with the option to include spot colours and over varnishes if needed.
Once the plates are prepared, they are mounted onto the printing press cylinders, with each colour in the design requiring a separate plate. The mounting process must be meticulously completed to ensure that the colours are precisely aligned, as this will produce accurate and vibrant prints.
The ink is supplied to the printing press through ink chambers or rubber rollers. To control the ink application, anilox rollers are used which have a pattern of tiny cells that carry and deliver a precise amount of ink to the plate surface. By carefully controlling the application of ink, consistent and sharp prints can be achieved.
Next, the substrate, which is usually in the form of rolls of paper or plastic film, is fed into the printing press, passing through various rollers and tension controls to ensure smooth and consistent movement through the press. Controlled feeding is vital to prevent misalignment and ensure the exceptional quality of the final print.
As the substrate moves through the press, the inked plates transfer the desired image or text onto it. The pressure applied between the plate and the substrate enables the ink to transfer effectively, creating the final print. This is a highly precise process which makes flexo printing ideal for detailed and high-quality work on a variety of different substrates.
Finally, after the ink is transferred to the substrate, it must undergo a drying or curing process to become permanent. Depending on the specific application, drying can be achieved through air drying or by utilising drying systems such as hot air, infrared, ultraviolet (UV), or LED UV technologies. The choice of drying method depends on the type of ink used and the requirements of the final product.
In conclusion, flexographic printing is a versatile and efficient method for producing high-quality prints on a variety of substrates. Its ability to deliver consistent and vibrant prints makes it a popular choice in many industries, particularly in the packaging and label sector.

Canon to live preview new LabelStream LS2000 digital label press at drupa
Canon has announced its commitment to become a significant player in the label and packaging markets with the first live preview outside Japan of the new LabelStream LS2000 water-based digital label press, set for 2025 availability. This announcement was made during the pre-drupa media conference in Dusseldorf in late March.
The LabelStream LS2000, Canon’s inaugural water-based inkjet label press, leverages innovative Canon technologies designed for industrial-scale label printing. Slated for release in the EMEA region in 2025, this press prints in CMYK plus white on self-adhesive substrates and uses a new ink set compliant with food safety standards. At drupa, visitors can witness live label production on paper and film media, with labels ready for varnishing, die-cutting, and slitting on a nearline converting device from Grafisk Maskinfabrik. Print samples from Canon's Edale FL3 flexographic label press will also be available.
Canon will introduce a concept for a sheetfed single-pass, industrial-scale digital corrugated press, targeting corrugated packaging converters. This press aims to deliver offset-like print quality at a 1.7m print width, productivity of up to 8,000 sqm/hr, and new levels of cost-efficiency. Attendees can view a 3D model, print samples, and technology animations of this system.
For those interested in digital printing on corrugated materials, live production of packaging prototypes and short-run promotional packaging will be demonstrated on Canon’s large format Arizona and Colorado printers. These solutions cater to packaging converters and print service providers, enabling personalized, short-run, on-demand packaging production.
Other attractions at the Canon stand
Apart from the LabelStream LS2000, Canon will showcase several other solutions, including the European debut of the new varioPRINT iX1700 sheetfed inkjet press, which will be available in 2025.
Canon will highlight the latest additions to the ProStream and ColorStream ranges of high-speed, web-fed inkjet printers: the ProStream 2000 series and the ColorStream 8200.
“The ProStream 2000 is 20% shorter than the ProStream 3000, so it makes an ideal solution (11:45) for customers that cannot accommodate the larger press,” Hans Schmidbauer, director, of marketing & innovation, commercial print, Canon EMEA said.
Canon will display the new Arizona 2300 FLXflow flatbed wide format printer with PRISMAelevate XL, the new imagePROGRAF PRO series for photo and fine art printing, and the new imagePROGRAF GP series for poster production.
Rounding out the exhibits on the stand will be Canon imagePRESS V series color printers, the varioPRINT TITAN and QUARTZ series monochrome printers, as well as the Colorado M series and UVgel Print Factory together with Canon large format technical documentation systems – all driven by the comprehensive PRISMA suite of production workflow solutions.
“At drupa 2024, we are excited to share the fruits of our continuous investment in technology and business innovation with a global audience, and to present our most extensive portfolio yet of powerful digital production print, label and packaging technologies – ready to support our customers’ growth and diversification ambitions,” said Jennifer Kolloczek, senior director, marketing & innovation, production printing, Canon EMEA.

What Machine is Used to Make Custom Mylar Bags?
Custom Mylar bags are the superheroes of the packaging universe, boasting durability, flexibility, and top-notch protection. If you're gearing up to create these custom bags, understanding the machinery involved is your first step.
The big three in the Mylar printing world are digital printers, flexographic printers, and rotogravure printers. Each has its own superpowers, tailored to different needs and scales of production. Let's dive into the specifics and see which machine suits your custom Mylar bag dreams.
Digital Printers: The Masters of Flexibility and Precision
Overview
Digital printers are the modern marvels of the printing world, using digital files to print directly onto Mylar film. Known for their flexibility and ability to produce high-quality prints, digital printers are perfect for small to medium runs and custom designs.
How Digital Printing Works
Digital mylar bag printing involves sending a digital file (like a PDF or TIFF) to the printer. The printer processes this file and prints the image directly onto the Mylar film using inks like solvent-based, UV-curable, or water-based inks.
Benefits
Flexibility: Digital printers are like chameleons, allowing for quick design changes and personalization. Ideal for businesses needing to keep designs fresh or offer bespoke packaging.
High Quality: Expect vibrant colors and sharp details that make your designs pop. Digital printing ensures your Mylar bags look professional and eye-catching.
No Plate Costs: Digital printing skips the plate-making process, cutting down on setup costs and time.
Fast Turnaround: These printers can swiftly process and print designs, making them ideal for meeting tight deadlines.
Ideal For
Small to medium-sized orders
Custom and limited edition packaging
Businesses needing rapid design changes
Considerations
Cost: Digital printing is cost-effective for short runs but can get pricey for high-volume production.
Durability: The durability of digital prints can vary, so ensure the inks are suitable for Mylar’s non-porous surface.
Digital Printing Process
Design Preparation: Create a high-resolution digital design file.
Printer Setup: Send the digital file to the printer.
Printing: The printer applies the design directly onto the Mylar film.
Curing: Depending on the ink, the printed film may need to be cured to set the ink.
Inspection: Check for any printing defects and ensure quality.
Flexographic Printers: The Speed Demons
Overview
Flexographic printing, or flexo, is the go-to for high-speed, high-volume printing. Using flexible relief plates to transfer ink onto Mylar film, flexo is ideal for large production runs due to its speed and cost-efficiency.
How Flexographic Printing Works
Flexographic printing involves creating a flexible plate with a raised image of the design. This plate is wrapped around a cylinder on the printing press. As the Mylar film passes through the press, the plate is inked, transferring the image onto the film.
Benefits
Cost-Effective for Large Runs: Flexo becomes more economical as production volumes increase, making it ideal for bulk orders.
High Speed: Flexo presses can churn out prints at high speeds, ensuring quick turnaround times and high output.
Versatility: Flexo can handle various substrates, including Mylar, making it a versatile option for different packaging needs.
Ideal For
Large-scale production
Food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic packaging
Businesses aiming to minimize per-unit costs
Considerations
Initial Setup Costs: Creating the flexible plates can be a significant upfront expense, less ideal for short runs.
Print Quality: Flexo offers good quality, but it doesn’t match the fine detail and sharpness of digital or rotogravure printing.
Flexographic Printing Process
Design Creation: Develop a high-quality design and transfer it to flexible plates.
Plate Creation: Create the flexible plates with the design image.
Mounting: Mount the plates on the printing press cylinders.
Inking: Apply ink to the plates and transfer the image onto the Mylar film.
Drying: Dry the printed film to ensure the ink sets properly.
Inspection: Conduct quality checks to ensure the print meets standards.
Rotogravure Printers: The Titans of Precision
Overview
Rotogravure printing, or gravure, is the elite athlete of the printing world, using engraved cylinders to transfer ink onto Mylar film. Known for its exceptional print quality and precision, gravure is the top choice for premium packaging.
How Rotogravure Printing Works
Rotogravure printing involves engraving the design onto a cylinder. The cylinder is then inked, and the excess ink is wiped off, leaving ink only in the engraved areas. As the Mylar film passes through the press, the ink is transferred from the engraved cylinder to the film.
Benefits
High Quality: Rotogravure delivers unmatched detail and color consistency, ensuring your designs are vibrant and precise.
Durability: The ink adheres strongly to the Mylar film, providing long-lasting prints that can withstand handling and environmental factors.
Efficiency: Ideal for large production runs, gravure is cost-effective when producing high volumes.
Ideal For
Premium product packaging
Large-scale, high-volume production
Businesses requiring detailed and high-quality prints
Considerations
Initial Costs: Engraving the cylinders is costly, making rotogravure less suitable for small or short-run projects.
Lead Time: Preparing the cylinders can take time, extending the overall production schedule.
Rotogravure Printing Process
Design Creation: Develop a detailed, high-resolution design.
Cylinder Engraving: Transfer the design onto the cylinders.
Inking: Apply ink to the engraved cylinders and wipe off excess ink.
Printing: Transfer the ink from the cylinders to the Mylar film as it passes through the press.
Drying: Dry the printed film to ensure the ink adheres properly.
Inspection: Perform quality checks to ensure the print meets the desired standards.

Our vendor agnostic approach to materials and array of exposure methodologies coupled with our consultative approach, truly puts you in the driver seat. This allows performance to dictate what is best for your printing application, not the latest marketing trend - rotogravure printing cylinder.
Flexographic printing sleeves manufactured In-The-Round (ITR) allow for a seamless, continuous print on a variety of substrates. You need both efficiency and quality. In most industries, those production results don’t often come in the same combination. However, ITR sleeves, especially those composed of elastomer blends, bring both the speed and accuracy needed for perfect, repeatable prints. Which features the following perks seen virtually nowhere else in the flexographic printing sleeve industry - gravure printing cylinder.
The artwork is directly imaged onto the extruded photopolymer plate, which in effect means that plate mounting takes place outside the press. Flexo-printed artwork is normally distorted to allow for the plate gap and the curvature of the plate after mounting. However, with ITR sleeves, no distortion is required.
ITR (The Round) or seamless photopolymer plates have been used for some time by printers to meet the exacting needs of their clients or to achieve the high-speed capacity of their printing presses. Traditionally many brand owners thought that a seamless design had to be committed to gravure printing with its engraved cylinders. Customers have realized that if they want a repeat pattern across their flexible packaging, there is a significant cost saving to a seamless plate for the background patterns and colours. Examples are many sweet wrappers and condiment sachets. The variable design elements can then be printed with conventional plates. For more information, please visit our site https://packadvance.com/
