Important Auradon Prep dining hall facts from the Villain Kid’s book for new VKs
The school has an ice cream sundae bar the last Friday of every month.
Mal is a mint chip ice cream lover (this is very important to me personally, mint chip ice cream is delicious and doesn’t deserve any of the hate it gets, much like Mal herself…)
The school does Sunday brunch. As someone who went to a relatively fancy college that also did weekend brunch meals, this is somewhat confusing and distressing the first weekend when you go down at your expected breakfast hour and find NO food out yet.
Bunch doesn’t start until noon….the VKs definitely learned this the hard way.
Evie likes eggs Florentine- as well as everything else on the brunch list, which is delicious carbs. #leteviehavebread2k23
Auradon Prep has pasta mondays…..every week? Once a month? No clear timeline on this one, but after working in a bunch of different real-life dining hall kitchens, I know that it’s nice to have a set meal rotation, so pasta every Monday probably makes sense for a high school.
Another important note here is that pasta night is ~fancy~ and they put out white tablecloths and dim the lights. Weird choice for a high school dining hall, but I guess when your student body is unimaginably rich and also likely confined to campus during the school term, you’ve got to make your own date opportunities.
Side note: is there an Auradon Prep hierarchy of “good” date nights? Is being asked out to Monday pasta night like a basic, everyday-tier date? The enchanted lake is clearly where students go to have a romantic picnic and then hook up, but what other common school dates are there? Is brunch appropriately romantic? Does the dining hall let anyone request a picnic, or is that reserved for actual royalty? Many questions here.
The funniest thing so far in the dining hall section of this book is the sample menu they have- WHO is feeding high school students escargot? Mussels? I guess they’re coastal enough to have fresh mussels on a somewhat regular basis because we do see them on a boat in D2…and like, they’re in relatively close proximity to the isle, which is In The Ocean, so I guess that part makes sense. But printed menus every night??
In my heart the printed menus are a sort of once-a-week special occasion thing. Maybe once a week they have fancy dinners where they’re all expected to eat nicely with the teachers, or with whatever visiting royal family is there to see their kids, or just to practice proper formal dinner etiquette.
The Auradon Prep dining hall serves grill cheese with tomato slices in the middle. Jay is apparently a big fan of this. I’m only sad about this one because I have a scene 90% written where the dining hall is serving grilled cheese and tomato soup, and now for ~canon accuracy~ I’m going to have to edit that.

How to Choose the Perfect Vacation Rental for Your Next Trip
Location
The first thing to consider is where you want to stay during your vacation. Location is everything! Are you looking to be within walking distance of major attractions, restaurants, and shops? Or would you prefer a peaceful spot outside the city where you can unwind after a day of exploring?
For beach vacations or mountain retreats, proximity to the coast or trails might be your priority. If you're leaning toward Philadelphia vacation rentals, neighborhoods like Old City offer a historic charm, while Rittenhouse Square might appeal if you need something more luxurious and central. Knowing where you want to spend most of your time will help narrow your options quickly.
Know Your Budget
While it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement of browsing dreamy vacation homes, it’s important to keep your budget in mind. Vacation rentals come in all price ranges, and sticking to a budget helps you avoid overspending on accommodation.
Look at what’s included in the rental price before booking. Sometimes a cheaper option may cost more after adding cleaning fees, security deposits, or service charges. On the other hand, some rentals may offer discounts for longer stays or during off-peak seasons. Prioritizing your needs over wants can help balance your budget while still allowing for a great stay.
Read Reviews Thoroughly
Reviews are a treasure trove of honest feedback from fellow travelers. They can provide insight into aspects of the property that may not be immediately obvious from the listing. While pictures show off the best parts of a rental, reviews can reveal if there are any hidden downsides like noisy neighbors or uncomfortable beds. Pay attention to recent reviews and take note of common themes. If multiple people mention a specific problem, it's something to consider seriously. On the flip side, glowing reviews about responsive hosts, spotless cleanliness, or prime location can give you confidence in booking.
Understand the Amenities You Need
Amenities can make or break your stay. Before you book, make a list of must-have amenities. Traveling with kids? A washing machine could be a lifesaver. Planning a romantic getaway? A private hot tub or cozy fireplace might be high on your list.
For city stays, features like Wi-Fi, parking, and air conditioning might be essential, while rural or coastal rentals might focus more on outdoor spaces, BBQ grills, or beachfront access. Think about your daily routines and what’s important to you in a living space. You don’t want to end up in a sweltering city apartment with no AC in the middle of summer!
Tailor Your Stay to Your Perfect Trip
Ultimately, the key to choosing the perfect vacation rental is knowing what will make your trip enjoyable and stress-free. With these factors in mind, you'll find that perfect fit without the hassle.

Rubio's Coastal Grill, Citing Rising Business Costs, Abruptly Shuts Down 48 Restaurants in California
Rising business costs can really hurt restaurants like Rubio's Coastal Grill in California. When costs for ingredients, rent, and labor go up, it becomes harder for businesses to make a profit. For example, if the price of fish increases, Rubio's would have to either raise menu prices or accept lower profits. If they raise prices too much, customers might choose to eat elsewhere. High costs can also lead to cutting staff hours or even laying off workers, which affects service quality. When a business can’t keep up with expenses, it may struggle to stay open. If these challenges continue, restaurants like Rubio's might have to close their doors for good, impacting not just the owners but also the employees and the local community.

Seafood Delights
Given its coastal location, it’s no surprise that seafood plays a starring role in Goan cuisine. Originating from Portuguese cuisine, this dish combines meat marinated in vinegar and garlic with a blend of spices for a hearty and flavorful experience. For a milder option, there’s Xacuti, a coconut-based curry made with roasted spices and chicken or lamb. Each curry is a symphony of spices, promising an unforgettable culinary adventure. Enjoying these dishes from your own luxury villas in Goa adds a special touch to the dining experience.

These breads are not just accompaniments but integral parts of the Goan dining experience, adding texture and flavor to every meal. Owning a luxury villa in Goa allows you to enjoy these traditional breads freshly made in your own kitchen.
Sweet Treats
To satisfy your sweet tooth, indulge in traditional Goan desserts like Bebinca, a multi-layered coconut pudding made with coconut milk, sugar, and eggs. Doce, a sweet made from coconut and jaggery, is another delightful treat that showcases the region’s love for coconut in various forms. The Finale (Week 18)
The end of our last international trip marked the start of many lasts as the days left in Coogee started to dwindle. I challenged myself to find a good balance between studying for finals and spending time in my favorite spots around the city. I also made sure to embark on my final coastal runs before the ultimate challenge — a half marathon just days before my departure from Sydney. When I first learned about the half-marathon, I strongly deliberated whether it was the right choice to sign up and add the additional training stress on top of finals. Ultimately, I, alongside Caroline, decided that running 13.1 miles through downtown Sydney would be the perfect way to wrap up our time abroad. Despite the stretch of relatively poor weather for the past two weeks (60° and rainy), we woke up bright and early at 5:30am on the Sunday after finals to start making our way into the city. We had spent months training for this moment which marked the end of our time abroad, so the fact that it was here so soon almost took us by surprise. Nevertheless, we went in eager and confident with the simple goal of making it through all 13.1 miles without stopping. The running route perfectly passed a variety of places I had visited and hotspots for memories of my time in Sydney. From Hurricane’s Grill and Star casino where I celebrated my birthday with all my hostel-mates, to Darling Harbour and the Opera House, the sites we passed fueled my run and kept my mind off the miles ahead. Friends and families of runners riddled the route with motivational posters and chants of support. Just as I was losing steam at mile 12, I looked up to see my own friends cheering me on. Shoutout to Lauren, Rachael, Anthony, Charlotte, Shaunak, and Evan for waking up early and making their way into the city for Caroline and I. The energy and love witnessed at a race like that is truly unmatched and something I’ll never forget.
^ Caroline and I after the race with a poster made by Lauren!
Other adventures that weekend included a visit to Luna Park, a small amusement park across the river from Sydney. Despite having very few rides and attractions, we had a lot of fun hopping from the Ferris wheel to the roller coaster to the carpet slides.
^ Luna Park!
We were also able to squeeze in two trips to Sydney suburbs including Newtown and Watson’s bay. Newtown’s King St is full of diverse restaurants and wellness shops that could keep you entertained for hours. Watson’s Bay is located at the northernmost point south of the river. Taking the ferry there was also something I was adamant about given how much I loved the ferry to Manly beach. I can’t believe we hadn’t made it out there sooner given the incredible views:
^ the view from the ferry (you can clearly see the rain falling over the north part of the city)
^ spectacular view from Watson’s Bay
This spot quickly became one of my favorites in all of Sydney and I look forward to returning one day.
The last few evenings in the hostel were definitely somber ones as we said our goodbyes and played our last games together. Rachael made a great short video encapsulating some of the moments we’ve shared and scheduled a time for us all to gather and watch it. Alex brought down his electric guitar and we sang our hearts out into the night. Everyone recognized how much our time together meant to one another and that a reunion for 18 people is next to impossible especially given our poor trip planning skills. This was the last time we’d all be together in that hostel living room.
Just like that, my time in Sydney has come to an end. My next and final post will contain my reflection of my time abroad. Cheers!
