Page 3.  ---- Small Allotments and Seeds Given to Unemployed ---- MONTREAL, June 13. - (CP) - Out of the ranks of artisans, mechanics, laborers and even office workers 400 unemployed married men, in many instances with the help of their wives and children, have taken over improvised "substance" farms in various sections of greater Montreal. 
Hands that wielded pencils, chisels and trowels are now being firmly clasped around hoes, rakes and shovels, as each home group toils to improve its parcel of ground. The allotments are about 100 by 25 feet in size and are expected to yield sufficient vegetables in the next few months to tide a family over the autumn and a good part of the winter. 
Under the auspices of the Community Garden League of Greater Montreal, harrowing supplies, seed, fertilizer and tools are being sup- plied to the new "farmers." Verdun, hardest hit of outlying municipalities in point of unemployment, has been offered additional help in the form of machinery and horses for plowing and harrowing. In this section alone, 225 families have gone on the land, taking up some. 45 acres. 
Seeds distributed include chard, radish, peas, beans, onions, beets, carrots, lettuce, corn, squash, potatoes and pumpkins. Everyone lends a hand. Mother, father and children all unite to push ahead with seeding and raking. The traditional farm background of rolling hills or flat undulating plains may have been replaced by ugly backs of houses and long lines of newly- washed clothes swinging in the wind-but the same zeal and determination characterizes the work of these men and women as that which motivated the pioneers of the larger farms. 
 Arrangements are under way to have lectures on horticulture in the various districts and if possible to provide individual instruction on the farms. Even a vegetable show has been mooted.
