Your weekly trip to the farmers market was one you looked forward to. A place for merchants to come together to offer an abundance of products, there was always something to browse or discover. Today you only had one thing on your list: berries for your pies. Frozen fruit did the job, but you preferred to bake your pies with fresh fruit. Buying from the market was also a way to support local farmers. Maybe one day you'd even bag a handsome farmer for yourself. It was a silly fantasy, of course, but your mind liked to wander some days.
Not that there was anything wrong with city men, but they couldn't compare to a man working on a farm. There was just something about a guy who knew how to work with nature and provide, wasn't intimidated by hard work or afraid to get his hands dirty, and had a strong body and character due to his work ethic. You liked to think youâd make a good wife and take care of him the way heâd take care of you. You also liked to imagine a handsome man walking inside after a long day and stripping down and wanting dessert before a hearty meal. And by dessert, you meant you.
For now, you were only a farmerâs wife in your dreams and journal.
The gravel crunched under your tires as you turned down the road, the market coming into focus. You made good time and managed to snag a decent parking space. A little bit of walking wouldnât hurt. Plus the day was nice enough that you wore one of your sundresses, the soft breeze pleasant against your skin once you got out of your car.
Lively chatter greeted you as you got closer to the stalls and booths and expertly weaved your way through the bustling crowd. The various produce and flowers created a kaleidoscope of colors, brightened more by the brilliant rays coming from the sun. The earthy fragrance that blended with the sweet and ripe aromas was one you only encountered here. There was nothing else quite like it.
Quick movement in front of you made you come to a stop, your heart jumping. Had you not been paying attention you would've collided with a little boy. âMama, there's Dada! Heâs getting honey!â He shouted as he ran past and threw his arms around a manâs legs.
âWalk, please, and watch where you're going!â His mother said after him, a both fond and exasperated look on her face as she gave you a tired smile. âIâm so sorry about that.â
âNo apologies,â you smiled. He hadn't done anything wrong. âI wish I had that energy.â
âSame. Iâd bottle and sell it,â she said over her shoulder.
Watching as the woman went to her son and husband, both of them looking at her like the sun rose today because of her, you felt a twinge of sadness. Your trips to the market were solo, always had been. You longed to have a partner to go with, someone to put his arm around you or hold your hand as you picked out items together. Even better if the two of you could make a family down the line.
With a wistful smile, you shook yourself from those thoughts. There was no reason to feel sorry for yourself. Just because you didn't have that in the present didn't mean it wouldn't happen in the future. You had to have faith that the right one would come along at the right time.
For now, you would find some berries and be on your way.
Walking a bit further, you spotted a booth you hadn't seen in your previous visits. The sign that read âBarnesâs Berriesâ complete with hand painted fruit pieces piqued your curiosity as you stopped in front of it. As the customers in front of you paid for their bundles and blocked the view of the person assisting them, you took a minute to admire the range of berries reflecting a spectrum from blues to reds. Your mouth watered from the sight. There were so many things you could do with these. Pies, jams, cakes-
A deep, husky voice asked, âIs there anything I can help you with?â
You made some sort of sound as you turned around, your heart pounding in your chest. The man in front of you was tall with thick thighs that deliciously filled out his jeans. The rolled up plaid shirt exposed part of his arms. The left was covered in tattoos and the ink couldn't hide the muscles or veins. If anything, it accentuated his strength. His chest and shoulders seemed to go on for miles, too. The chestnut hair that fell below his chin and stubble on his face gave the already handsome man a rugged look.
Sapphire eyes crinkled when you made eye contact and he smiled so softly that you couldn't help but smile in return. A man of his size and stature working a berry stand when he looked like he could easily chop wood or build his own home was otherworldly. He didn't just step out of your fantasy. He took your thoughts and made them better than you could've imagined.
âIs there anything I can help you with?â He asked again a bit hesitantly when you didnât answer his question. âIf you're still looking, please, take your time.â
âYouâre real, right?â You asked, your face heating up as the words left your mouth. A giggle followed because you couldnât believe you just said that. âWhat I meant to say is, yeah. Just looking for now,â you added to save face, smoothing out your dress for no reason.
Amusement filled his eyes, the soft smile still tugging at his lips. âI sure hope Iâm real and not just a figment of your imagination.â
You wished you could reach out and touch him to âproveâ he was real, but didnât want to weird him out. âNot a figment of my imagination,â you said, but that wasnât totally true. You very much imagined a man like him when you were alone at night. âBut I donât think Iâve seen you here before.â It wasn't like you knew every single vendor, but you would've remembered him.
He sure as hell had a face worth remembering.
âIâm Bucky,â he introduced, offering you his hand. His grip was gentler than you expected, but there was no mistaking the roughness in his touch. The man worked with his hands and it showed. âThis is actually my first week here.â
You said your name, proud that you remembered it with the way he was staring so intently at you. He stood a bit close, too. Close enough that you could smell his woodsy cologne. Subtle, yet enticing. âI hope everyone has been welcoming.â
âMost have been very friendly, which has made my job easy,â he said. You could imagine with his looks and friendly demeanor despite his size that heâd have a lot of repeat customers. âA couple of my friends recently started selling here, too, so itâs good to have some familiar faces close by.â
âThatâs really nice. Iâm sure they're glad you're close by, too,â you smiled. You wondered who his friends were. âDid you have to travel far to get here?â
âYeah, theyâre good guys,â he smiled back, your heart racing when he ran a hand through his hair. âNot too far since my farm is only a few miles away, which also makes things easier. Makes me wonder why I didn't do this sooner.â
You nearly swooned. Your dream man was becoming dreamier by the second. âYou have a farm not too far from here?â
It wouldâve been easy to assume he did since he had a stand here, but not everyone who worked the market had their own land. It was also easy to assume he wasn't married since you didn't see a ring on his left hand or any sort of tan line or indentation to indicate that he removed a ring. A man like that though probably had a partner. It wasn't worth getting your hopes up.
âYeah. I have a few acres. Beautiful place. but if Iâm being honest it gets a bit lonely since itâs just me out there with no one to share it with.â He scratched the back of his neck with a small chuckle and avoided your gaze. âI don't know why I said that. Thatâs kind of embarrassing.â
Your stomach did a funny flip. Not just because he pretty much let it slip that he wasn't with anyone when you assumed moments ago that he was, but from the urge to comfort him taking over. You wished you could wrap him in a hug.
âWell, I don't have a farm, but I understand feeling lonely some days,â you admitted. Being vulnerable with a complete stranger wasn't how you expected your day to go, but you wanted him to know he wasn't alone in that feeling. âAnd itâs not embarrassing,â you assured him. If anything, it was endearing.
He slowly met your gaze. âI appreciate that.â He rubbed the back of his neck again as your heart began to race. âI hope you donât mind me saying so, but I find it hard to believe that someone as sweet and beautiful as you gets lonely.â
The compliment left you momentarily dazed before a shy smile graced your face. You could've said the same thing about him. Maybe the instant connection you felt wasnât so one-sided. âWell, I do. Even coming here, Iâm usually by my lonesomeâ you said, the words not at all bitter. Just honest. âAnd do you call all potential customers sweet and beautiful?â
âNo, I donât.â He continued to gaze at you before he cleared his throat. âBut you said potential customer. If I made you uncomfortableâŠâ
âYou didnât.â It was gentlemanly that he wanted to make sure that his comment didnât put you off. âThereâs a stand a little further down that I sometimes stop at, though your berries are extremely tempting.â
Buckyâs brows pinched before he snapped his fingers. âJed, right? Heâs actually not here this week. Had an accident recently. Broke his leg.â
You gasped. âOh, my god. Thatâs awful.â Jed was a kind, older farmer who had been there for as long as you could remember. A hard worker who didnât deserve any kind of pain. âI hope he heals quickly.â
Bucky nodded solemnly. âSo, do I,â he said, clearing his throat. âIâm no Jed, but is there anything I can do to get your business today?â
The hopeful look in his blue eyes had you smiling slightly. âWell, I-â
âWait. Let me try to guess what youâre specifically looking for before you tell me.â He waited until you nodded. âClearly berries, but not for anything like a fruit salad or an everyday snack,â He rubbed his chin thoughtfully and you tried not to giggle when he grinned triumphantly. âPies. You want berries to make pies. Blueberries, right? Maybe blackberries, too. And if I had to pick a third, raspberries.â
Your mouth fell open. Was he a mind reader? âYeah, thatâs exactly it. Blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries. I have this triple berry pie recipe that I love and I make the crust from scratch andâŠâ You bit your lip to keep from rambling. He didnât need to hear all that. âSorry. I just like to bake.â
âNo apologies.â His light touch to your arm surprised you as he met your gaze. âYou sound very passionate about it and I like that.â
You found yourself nodding, unable to tear your gaze away. It took everything within you to not blurt out how gorgeous he was. And on top of that, he was kind? Maybe he wasnât real. âI am passionate about it. And not just pies. Other treats, too,â you said, nodding to the strawberries. âThose would be perfect for mini shortcakes or scones.â
He studied you with an appreciative smirk. The sundress was a good choice. âI have no doubt your treats are delicious and you are making me very hungry,â he said, your heart thudding. The smirk disappeared as quickly as it appeared when he gestured to his stand. âAnd I think theyâll be tastier with my berries.â
You blinked, stuck on the fact that he called your treats delicious. It wasnât a big deal. It wasnât like he called you delicious and he hadnât tasted anything of yours, though youâd find a way to bake something and deliver it to him personally if he asked. âYou sound very confident, Bucky.â
He puffed his chest out. âI take a lot of pride in all my crops. Tell you what,â he said, stepping away from you to grab a sample cup. âWhy donât you try some and see how you like them? If they aren't the best berries youâve ever tasted, Iâll shut my stand down and let you on your way.â
âYouâll really shut your stand down? Thatâs a big wager,â you smiled, his fingers touching yours as he handed the cup over. It heated you up all over again. âThe look of them alone is amazing,â you said, the vibrant berries beckoning for you to have a bite.
âTaste amazing, too, but Iâll let you be the judge of that.â
Bucky shot you a dazzling smile as you tried the blueberry first since that was the berry you were most interested in purchasing today. You didnât care if it was mortifying, you outright moaned at the flavor when you bit down on the small and plump piece of fruit. Not overly sweet or acidic as the juice coated your tongue. It was the perfect balance. So much that you licked your lips and craved another.
Your eyes honed in on the rise and fall of Buckyâs chest before your gaze flickered to his face. His eyes were darker and you realized after a moment that he was staring at your mouth. A look like that couldâve made you choke on your breath, but it somehow gave you a burst of confidence. Testing the waters, you tried the blackberry next and made a show of licking your lips again at the sweet and succulent taste. The groan he let out shot a burst of heat between your legs.
God, he looked like he was ready to eat you whole.
âDelicious,â you said in a sultry voice you didn't recognize.
âYou, umâŠâ He brought a hand up and brushed his thumb along the corner of your mouth. You quivered when he showed you the drop of juice that you missed. Without breaking eye contact, he licked the drop away. It was a look that melted your insides when he said in a gruff tone, âYou're right. Delicious.â
âExcuse me?â A woman spoke, making you jump back a bit from Bucky and pulling you both out of the moment. She might as well have dumped a bucket of cold water over your head. âIâd like to buy these.â
Your heart continued to race when you saw disappointment flash in his eyes. âGo ahead,â you smiled. He was there to do a job after all, not chat and flirt with you. âIâm not going anywhere.â
Bucky turned his head toward the customer. âOf course, maâam,â he smiled, still glancing back at you momentarily as if was afraid youâd walk away if he didnât keep an eye on you.
Biting your lip, you held in a giggle as you tossed the sample cup into the small wastebasket. You swore you felt him gazing at you as you gathered up the bundles. Maybe you didnât need to bend so far over to get the last bundle, but was it wrong that you wanted him to look? It wasnât every day that you had a kind, handsome farmer flirting with you. It would have you walking on cloud nine for the rest of the day.
Turning toward the table to pay, you gasped when you nearly collided with Bucky. He managed to grab your arms to keep you from falling and you somehow didnât drop a single bundle as he stared into your eyes. âYou know, I think youâre even sweeter than my berries,â he spoke in a low voice, swiftly taking everything from your hands and lining them in a box before your brain could process what he said. âThis everything then?â
âYeah.â You blinked and got your money out to pay. âThanks. And keep the change.â
He shook his head when he saw the amount you gave him. âOh, I couldnât do that.â
âPlease. I insist,â you smiled. He took a lot of pride in his work and any extra change could go toward that.
âIâll keep it on two conditions,â he said, nodding to the box. âOne, you let me be a gentleman and help you carry that to your car, that way youâre not stuck carrying it around.â
You nodded, butterflies in your stomach. âOkay, if you insist on being a gentleman.â He was nice enough that he wanted to step away from his stand and carry something for you. He really kept getting better and better. âAnd the second condition?â You asked with a coy smile. Maybe if you were lucky enough heâd ask for your number.
He reached behind him and presented you with another sample cup. âOne more for the road? Please?â
You stamped down your disappointment that he didnât ask for your number, which was more than okay. âHow can I say no to that?â You popped the berries into your mouth without hesitation. They tasted ever sweeter than the first sample you had and you watched his eyes go to your neck as you swallowed. âThanks. You really do have a gift,â you added to distract you from his heated gaze.
He looked humbled by the compliment. âI really do appreciate that,â he said, glancing over your shoulder to nod at someone. âSteve! You mind watching the stand until I get back? Iâm gonna help her carry these to her car.â
You turned just in time to see a gorgeous blonde just as large as Bucky jog over from the stand across the way. âThatâs nice of you, jerk. Real gentlemanly,â he smiled, giving you a small nod. âMaâam.â
âPunk,â Bucky mumbled, but the affection was evident.
Another giggle worked its way out. Where did these men suddenly come from? Was there something in the water you didnât know about? âYou donât need to call me maâam, but thank you. And youâre right.â Your eyes went back to Bucky. âHe is a gentleman.â
âAnd this is my cue to get you away from my friend before he says otherwise,â Bucky teased, steering you away with one hand while he balanced your fruit in the other.
âI donât think Iâve seen him here either.â
âThat was one of the friends I was talking about earlier. Has a farm, too, but his real passion is art,â he explained, his arm brushing against yours as he walked close. âHe actually helped make my sign since Iâm hopeless with that stuff.â
âThatâs really nice,â you said, falling into a comfortable silence with him as you both maneuvered your way through the crowd. Once you got to the parking area, you pointed out your vehicle. âIâm just over there.â
Buckyâs gaze flickered over to you as you got your keys out. âIâm really glad you stopped at my stand today.â
Your heart fluttered when you caught the sun shining along his hair. âIâm glad I did, too,â you said softly, unlocking the car so he could set everything inside. Thank God it was clean. That wouldâve been embarrassing. âBut I should let you get back to work.â
He shifted on his feet, like he wasnât quite ready to go. âYeah, I should go.â He stepped forward and took a breath. âBut I donât think I can go back before I ask you to go on a date with me.â
You blinked. This wasnât a drill. Bucky was asking you out. His tone was so gentle, his gaze so compelling. He was mesmerizing. He couldâve asked you to do anything and you likely wouldâve done so without question.
âYou want to take me out on a date?â You questioned, your mind screaming that your response was the wrong answer. This wasnât a fantasy. It was really happening.
With an unsure chuckle, Bucky brushed a hand through his hair. âToo forward?â He smiled a little. âIâm sorry. I just thought that weâŠâ
Your heart reacted to his uncertainty. It took a lot for anyone to put themselves out there and you wanted him to know it was worth the risk. âNot too forward at all, Bucky,â you smiled and placed your hand on his left arm, happy when he smiled back. âI'd love to go out with you.â
He took your hand in his when you went to pull your hand back. âIâm really glad you said yes,â he whispered.
âMe, too,â you sighed at his warm touch. It was the beginning of something special. You could tell. âSo, when would you like to go on that date?â
And that is our intro! Now here is where it gets interesting: This story will go down two paths, one light and one dark. Be on the lookout for the continuation and choose your path (or choose both đ). Love and thanks for reading! â€ïž

Youâve had a crush on the farm hand since the day you met him. You wouldâve never thought of being in a secret relationship with him, but here you two are. The two of you are currently in the back of the barn making out. Bucky has you pinned against the wall with his hands on your waist. One of your hands was clutching his white tank top while your other hand was on the back of his head, your fingers running through his hair. Your mind began to drift elsewhere. You were thinking of what your parents would say if they found out about yours and Buckyâs secret relationship.
âWhatâs on your mind, pretty girl?â Bucky asks, snapping you out of your thoughts.
âNothing.â You say.
âYou sure?â He asks, moving his lips to your neck.
âItâs just-â You paused for a moment before continuing your sentence. âIâm worried about what my parents will say when they find out about us.â You tell him.
Bucky pulled his lips away from your neck and looked in your eyes, his hands moving up and down your sides.
âLetâs hope they accept us being together cause I love you.â He says softly.
âI love you too.â You say, smiling up at him.
Bucky kissed you once more before going back to work. You walked out of the barn like you and Bucky werenât just making out. You walked in the house, thinking you were in the clear, but you werenât. Your parents stopped you in your tracks.
âWhat were you doing in the barn for so long?â Your mom asks.
âOh umm-â You paused to think of an excuse. âI was talking to Bucky while he was on his break.â You tell her, lying through your teeth.
Your mom looked at you for a few seconds. She knows when youâre lying. You felt yourself getting nervous. You thought your parents were going to catch you lying.
âJust donât bother him.â Your dad says.
You exhaled a breath you didnât know you were holding and mouthed âThank god.â to yourself.
Later that same day, you went back to the barn. Instead of going to the barn, you seen Bucky packing up his things to go home. You smiled and walked over to him. Bucky gave you a quick peck on your lips before your parents seen you two.
âSo I was thinkingâŠâ Bucky put his hands on your waist. âWe should tell your parents about our relationship.â He says.
âMe too.â Your fingers fiddled with the buttons on his dirty and sweaty button up shirt that he had unbuttoned. âIâm pretty sure my parents are getting suspicious. I had to lie to them earlier and I hate lying to them.â You say.
Bucky could hear the nervousness in your voice as he looked down at you.
âIâm nervous.â You say, looking up at him.
âMe too.â He wraps his arms around you, holding you close to him. âThey have to know.â He says, rubbing his hand up and down your back to calm your nerves.
âI know.â You mumbled, loud enough for him to hear. âLetâs get this over with.â You say.
You and Bucky went inside the house and to the living room where your parents were, watching TV.
âMom? Dad?â You say, getting their attention.
âYes, sweetie?â Your mom says, hers and your dadâs attention was turned to you and Bucky.
âMe and Bucky have something to tell you.â You say.
You and Bucky sat on the couch opposite from them. You took a deep breath before saying anything.
âMe and Bucky are together.â You say, getting straight to the point.
âWhat do you mean you two are together?â Your mom asks.
âWeâre dating.â You say.
âNo.â Your dad says.
âBut dad-â You got interrupted.
âYou heard your dad.â Your mom says.
âIf I mayâŠâ Bucky starts. âI love your daughter and she loves me. If you guys are going to fire me just because Iâm in love with your daughter, then go ahead, but thatâs not going to change my feelings for her.â He says.
âI think you should leave, James.â Your mom says to him.
Bucky nods and stood up, patting your shoulder as he walked past you and left. You just scoffed and stood up from the couch to go to your bedroom.
âWeâre not done talking to you, young lady!â Your dad calls out to you.
You didnât say anything. You closed your bedroom door and threw yourself on your bed, crying in your pillow. You just wished that your parents would understand how much you love Bucky.
You havenât seen Bucky in a few days. You knew what that meant. Your parents fired him because of yours and his relationship. Youâve been feeling sick lately. At first you thought it was something you ate, but now youâre thinking itâs something. It didnât take you long to realize what it was. You could possibly be pregnant⊠with Buckyâs baby. You immediately went to the drug store to buy a pregnancy test and went back home. Luckily, you were home alone when you took it. You had it face down on the sink counter. You paced back and forth, waiting for the timer to go off. You jumped at the sound of the timer going off on your phone. You shut it off and picked up the pregnancy test. You took a deep breath before turning it over. You gasped when you seen a plus sign on it. Meaning that youâre pregnant. You grabbed your phone and texted Bucky.
You: Are you busy?
Bucky: No. Why?
You: Can I come over? I have something important to tell you
Bucky: Of course you can. See you soon
You shut your phone off and got in your car to go to Buckyâs. Before you knew, you were at his house. You knocked on the door and patiently waited for him to open it. Bucky smiles when he sees you. He stepped aside, allowing you to come inside of his house. He gave you a much needed kiss.
âWhat do you need to tell me?â Bucky asks. âYou said itâs important.â He says.
âCan we sit down first?â You asked.
Bucky led you to the living room. The two of you sat down on the couch. Your fingers nervously played with the bottom of your dress.
âIâm-â You paused nervously.
âWhatever it is, you can tell me.â Bucky says, holding your hand.
You took a deep breath. You decided to be straight forward with it.
âIâm pregnant.â You tell him.
Bucky stared at you with a look of shock and surprise on his face.
âPlease say something.â You say.
âI- we- weâre going to be parents?â He asks.
âYes.â You say.
Bucky kissed you with so much passion that it took your breath away.
âWeâre having a baby!â He says with a smile.
âWeâre having a baby!â You confirmed, smiling.
Your smile faded away. You thought of what your parents were going to say when they find out about you being pregnant with Buckyâs baby. They didnât approve of you and Bucky being together. They sure as hell arenât going to approve of you having a baby with him.
âWhatâs wrong, baby?â Bucky asks softly.
âMy parents are going to like me being pregnant with your baby.â You say.
âIf they donât understand our love, then weâll find it out on our own.â He says.
You and Bucky spent most of the afternoon trying to figure out how you two are going to tell your parents that youâre pregnant with Buckyâs baby.
You two walked in the kitchen of your parentsâ house. They stopped what they were doing and turned their attention to you and Bucky.
âIf heâs here, it better be important.â Your dad says.
âIt is.â Bucky held your hand in his, intertwining his fingers with yours to calm your nerves. âIâm pregnant.â You tell them.
Your parents looked at the two of you with wide eyes.
âWhen did you find out?â Your mom asks.
âThis afternoon.â You say.
âWhoâs the father?â Your dad asks.
âThat would be me.â Bucky speaks up.
There was an awkward silence for a moment.
âYouâre out of here.â Your dad says.
âWhat?â You asked, making sure you heard him right.
âYou heard me, missy.â Your dad stands up from the kitchen table. âIf youâre having his baby, then you arenât living here with me and your mom.â He says before leaving the kitchen.
You packed up your stuff with Buckyâs help and moved in with him. You exhausted by the end of the day. You took a shower to relax yourself. Then you got in bed next to Bucky, cuddling yourself against his side and your head on his chest. Bucky wrapped his arms around you. You let yourself get caught up in your thoughts.
âDo you want to get married?â You asked, looking up at him.
âOf course I do.â Bucky says, looking down at you.
âWhen?â You asked.
You watched as Bucky sat up and looked for something in the drawer of the nightstand next to his bed. He grabbed a small velvet box and turned himself towards you.
âI had a better way of doing this, but I might as well do it now.â Bucky got off the bed and got down on knee. âWill you marry me?â He asks, opening the small velvet box, revealing the most beautiful diamond ring youâve ever seen.
âYes!â You answered.
Bucky smiles and said the ring on your finger. He stood up and kissed you passionately.
âWeâre getting married!â You say with a smile.
âWeâre getting married!â Bucky confirms, smiling.
Bucky got back in bed, holding you close to him with one arm wrapped around you and his free hand on your stomach.
âI love you, baby.â Bucky says softly.
âI love you too, Bucky.â You say in almost a whisper.

~*~
âTheyâve set fire to the Palace! We must hasten!â
Screams echo from the Palace as you rush through the servants' hallways, your personal guard pushing people aside in his haste to get you to safety.
You mutter out soft apologies to the women you pass, gathering the base of your gown and hiking it up as you sprint after him.
âCome, I can smell the stables. This way!â
You run after him, slowing only when you see your horse.
âHurry, Princess. Up,â Steve says, helping you up onto your horse and climbing onto his a second later.
âNow we ride!â
As if hearing his command, your mares both start sprinting away from the Palace.
Away from your home, your people.
A risked glance over your shoulder at the flaming building breaks your heart. But, whatâs worse, is the group chasing after you and Steve on their own horses.
Following your gaze, the blond glances back and pushes his mare to run faster, desperate to get you to safety, to do his job properly without fail.
âGo, Princess!â
You follow his command, looking back again when you hear him slow his horse.
âSteve!â
With a yank on the reins, you guide your horse back to his, heart in your throat when you see him unsheathe his sword.
Heâs sacrificing himself to keep you safe.
âGo, Princess! Now!â He shouts, holding his shield in one hand and a sword in the other.
âNo! I wonât leave you!â You grab at your own sword and slide off your mare, stumbling against the uneven ground.
âNo! You are of no use to your people if you are dead. You must go.â
You shake your head, tears welling up in your eyes.
âI wonât leave without you, Steve.â
He lets out a sigh and presses his forehead to yours for a brief moment.
âI will find you, Princess. This, I swear. Now you must go.â
âYou will find me,â you order softly, pulling away from him and looking into his ocean-blue eyes.
He nods firmly, determination in his eyes as you climb back onto your horse.
âI will,â he promises, turning to the sounds of battle.
Your mare starts sprinting away, and only moments later do you hear the sound of swords clashing.
It takes every ounce of self-control you have not to turn around and fight by his side.
But heâs right.
Only the Gods know if your sisters survived, and if they didn't then youâre the only hope your Kingdom has.
You ride through the night, your mare expertly dodging trees and roots and running far away from the danger.
Youâve no idea how far youâve gone nor where you are, when your horse stumbles on the uneven ground, launching you off of her back and sending you flying into the woods.
Your head smashes against a tree and you tumble to the ground in a heap as the world around you fades to black.
~*~
You awake with a soft groan, your head pounding and your body aching.
It takes a moment for you to remember what happened, but when you do youâre lurching upright regardless of the pain in your head.
Instead of being on the forest floor, however, youâre in a soft bed. The sky is not above you, instead a roof is.
You push to your feet and examine yourself, noting the lack of bindings around your arms and no pain between your legs.
So you havenât been taken by someone who wishes to do immediate harm to you, but that doesnât mean that they wonât hurt you at some point.
After taking a few deep breaths to steady yourself, you slowly open the door, peaking around before fully emerging.
Youâre alone.
You explore the small house, keeping your breathing light and your feet even lighter.
It has one bedroom, a small kitchen, and an even smaller bathroom.
Your sword and weapons are all piled on the kitchen table, filling your heart with glee. With quick fingers, you slide them all back into place and hold your sword tightly, then head to the front door.
As youâre about to leave, with one hand on the doorknob, the door gets pulled open from the outside.
A huge body steps through the doorway without noticing you, and then youâre colliding with a hard chest.
âOof!â You exclaim, nearly tumbling to the floor.
A study arm wraps around your waist, keeping you steady, and then youâre pressed against a warm chest.
âWhoa, easy! You shouldnât be moving too much! That wound on your head looks pretty bad, you must've hit it hard when you fell.â He slowly drops his arm from around your waist and steps around you to inspect the wound in question.
âI cleaned you as best as I could while keeping you decent and your modesty intact, but I gathered some clothes that used to belong to my sister, and I need only light the embers beneath the tub. Now that youâre awake, you can truly clean, Iâm sure you must want to.â
You stand there in the doorway, absolutely flabbergasted as this man drones on and on.
He must not know who you are, then, you decide.
âHere, I'll show you the way.â
You already know the way to the bathroom, but you follow him anyway, leaving a wide berth in case he makes a hostile move.
âWho are you?â You ask skeptically, watching as he keeps his back to you, leaving him vulnerable. He must know how many weapons you have, for heâs the one who took them from you. So why is he trusting you like this?
âMy name is James,â he says with a small smile thrown your way.
You nod slowly, assessing him carefully.
âI am (Y/n),â you reply after a moment, waiting for the pieces to click in his mind, for him to realize who you are and try to kill you, but he never does.
âItâs very nice to meet you, (Y/n). The water should warm up soon. Linger as long as youâd like, Iâm going to be in the kitchen making some food and a nice warm cup of tea for you.â
He leaves immediately after, pulling the door shut behind him.
You wait for a lock to click, for footsteps to barge into the house, or for some sort of fire to start, but nothing happens.
You wait for half an hour, each second ticking slowly in your mind, your sword held tightly in your grasp. Eventually, you strip down to your white slip and step into the warm water, a dagger held in one hand and a washcloth in the other.
Maybe it is an ambush, but if it isn't, you don't want to waste this opportunity to clean yourself.
Throughout the entire bath, the door stays closed and nobody tries to enter. Not once.
Once youâre finished, you dress in the clothes he gave you. The dress is a little snug, but a tug on the stitches fixes that swiftly.
Itâs nothing spectacular, but you can move comfortably and even fight in it if you need to.
With a dagger in one hand and your sword in the other, you slowly emerge from the bathroom and into the kitchen where James is seated, humming softly to himself.
âHow are you feeling?â He asks once he notices your presence.
âBetter. Thank you.â
He nods, that gentle smile on his face again.
He rises to his feet and motions to the chair across from where he was sitting, then turns and walks to the counter, âthe water is still warm. I wanted to wait to have my own tea with you. I have so many questions for you.â
You watch intently as he pours two cups of tea, handing one to you and then sitting back down.
You wait until after heâs had a sip of his to have a sip of your own, and when the flavour hits your tongue you canât help but relax a bit.
âItâs my motherâs recipe. She used to make it for my sister and me whenever we were sick or upset. I thought... it might make you feel better. I canât imagine how scared you mustâve been, waking up in a strange place.â
You want to tell him that you werenât scared, a warrior doesnât feel fear, but instead, you take another sip of tea.
âWhat happened? I found you lying in the woods near the creek, a horse protecting you. It took me nearly ten minutes to tame it enough to check you for injuries. Where are you coming from? Your clothes arenât from Lornilla and Iâve never seen a woman carry so many weapons before.â
His waterfall of questions gives you a few answers.
Your horse is safe, no one knows where you are, and youâve wound up in the invading Kingdom of Lornilla.
âI am... not from around here. I travelled a great distance, and I was thrown from my horse when she tripped,â you offer only that as your explanation and he nods, beyond curious but not wanting to push you any farther.
âWhere am I?â You ask, taking another sip of the tea and looking around the small house again.
âJust outside the village. If you follow the gravel road there it will take you to the heart of Lornilla, though I donât recommend a woman such as yourself going there alone.â
Your brows draw together, âdo you not think me capable of protecting myself?â You question, your ego bruised.
His eyes go wide and heâs quick to try and explain himself.
âN-No! I just... they donât treat women well there, is all. âSpecially not women who defend themselves. You look like a strong person, and, based on all the knives you have, I donât doubt you could defend yourself, but itâs dangerous to speak against men, even as a man.â
Ah yes, the patriarchal ways of Lornilla rage on.
You have to hold back an eye-roll at the thought of such a useless Kingdom treating women terribly.
But that brings you to your situation now.
You remember the smell of smoke and the sound of screams as the Lornillian army invaded your kingdom.
You know not if your sisters survived, nor if your mother did. But, knowing your mother, you know that if she went down it was not without a fight.
âAre you all right?â James asks softly, worry pulling his brows together.
Why does this random stranger care so much?
âWhy did you help me? Why not leave me in the forest?â You ask, ignoring his question.
âYou... you were hurt. I couldnât just leave you there.â
âWhy not? Anyone else would have. Or done worse, if weâre close to Lornilla.â
He nods, his lips pursed for a moment, âIâm not anyone else. Iâm me. And I know that, were it my sister in your shoes, Iâd hope someone would help her. You probably have a family... a husband... who would be terribly worried about you. I know that if I had a wife and she went out and were hurt... Iâd want to know that there was a good person somewhere willing to help her.â
His answer surprises you and, as you look into his eyes, you see nothing but truth in them.
âI have no husband,â you tell him after a moment. âI know not if my family is alive. There very well could be no one looking for me...â your thoughts drift to Steve and your heart hurts a bit. âDoes this change your thoughts at all? Knowing that you could do whatever you please with no consequences?â
A sour expression covers his face and he shakes his head, âIt is not the consequences that stop me from doing terrible things, itâs the actions themselves.â
You watch him for a long moment, surprised and intrigued by him, his kindness, though you donât fully trust it yet.
âIf you do not have a husband, do you know anyone nearby? You mustâve been on your way somewhere, is there someplace I can direct you?â He asks gently.
You shake your head, a grey cloud darkening your mood as thoughts of your family fill your mind, worry tying a knot in your stomach.
âI... no. I donât know anyone nearby. I donât even know where Iâm meant to go.â
He looks at you, at the way your shoulders slump forward slightly, your eyes draw down and defeat colours your tone, and he feels bad that there isnât more he can do.
âYouâre welcome to stay here for as long as you need. I hope you donât think Iâm trying to make you leave. As long as you need, you may stay here.â
You smile gratefully at him, ignoring the stinging in your eyes.
âThank you, James.â

Bucky was going to kill him. Steve had promised an easy in-and-out mission, something low stakes to get back into the groove after some time off in Wakanda. This was everything but that. Bucky was snapped out of his murderous thoughts by a bullet whizzing by his head, making him curse as he sped up. These HYDRA soldiers were hot on his tail, and not letting up. It didnât help that he had been hit, the pain coursing through his right thigh a constant reminder of the bullet lodged in the flesh. As he tumbled through the treeline into a clearing, he saw an old barn, the moonlight reflecting off the tin roof seemed like a beacon of hope. Without any other options, he skillfully hopped over the fence, ducked into the barn, held his breath, and listened. The soldiers came exploding through the treeline and stopped, seeing no sign of Bucky anywhere. Bucky listened carefully as he heard them approach the barn and stop. Their boots crunched on the fallen leaves as they circled the barn. His heart was in his throat, blood rushing in his ears but after a moment that seemed like forever, they left. Bucky didnât move for almost an hour, listening and making sure that he was in the clear before he pulled out his transponder. He looked down to activate it and saw that it had been trashed by a stray bullet. He groaned out a curse and threw the useless device across the barn. He tried to stand but the pain in his leg prevented him from supporting any weight so he pushed himself up against the wall, deciding that heâd just rest for a bit.
He was on the verge of sleep when a song started to flow through his mind, louder than it had been since, ever, causing him to startle. See, everyone had a soulmate, something Bucky never believed in, having never heard any music in the 40âs. After he fell off the train, he figured whoever they were would be long dead by now. However, since coming out of recovery, he started to hear the music again. Part of HYDRAâs programming, he found out, was to block the music that would be pumping into his mind from his soulmate but now that he was free from all of the things that HYDRA put in his head, he started hearing music. He didnât think much of it, as it was always quiet and in the background like a thought, but this song was so loud that it sounded like it was being whispered in his ear.Â
âLet's get out, we can leave this city. Let's drive to the open air. Yeah, the countryside is so pretty. With the wind blowing in your hair. We can look back someday Baby, don't you understand? That we only get one love, I wanna make it count. Honey, come on now and take my handâ
It was a soft melody, the gentle guitar soothing his frayed nerves, and just as quickly as it startled him awake, it soothed him back to sleep.
He was woken up by something cold and wet nuzzling into his cheek. Bucky groaned and tried to shift away from the intrusion but he was too stiff from his awkward sleeping predicament to move very fast. Swatting at whatever the hell was messing with him, he was greeted by more music flooding his senses. This time, even louder than the last. The guitar was vibrating his bones and the drums rattling his teeth when all of a sudden there was a gasp and the music promptly stopped.Â
âJake! Get away from him! Jesus, hey guy, are you ok?âÂ
A panicked voice called out as the presence next to him disappeared. Bucky shot open his eyes and shot up into a position ready to defend himself when he saw a woman staring at him. Her light blue button-up was tucked into a pair of old worn-out jeans with a dark belt securing them in place around her hips. A large black and white dog was standing at her side, tail wagging furiously back and forth as its warm brown eyes stared at him.Â
Bucky blinked, all the memories of what happened yesterday came flooding back into the forefront of his brain.
âUh- yeah, I uh- I think so.â He groaned, his leg screaming at him in pain causing him to hiss out in discomfort.Â
âAre you sure? You donât seem like it, here, let me help you.â The woman walked over, tucking an arm underneath his and wrapping it around him, hoisting him onto his feet and leading him to a bench on the other side of the barn. She gently placed him down and ran her eyes over him when she noticed the dried patch of blood on his thigh.
âShit, have you been shot?!â Bucky was too busy gawking at how stunning this woman was to notice that he was bleeding again, her words caused him to look down where she was staring.
âOh. Yeah, I guess I was. I kind of forgot about that.â Bucky shrugged as he watched the woman wander off to another area.
âHow in the hell do you just forget that you were shot?!â She called out in between the slams of cabinet doors. Bucky took a deep breath, opening his mouth to respond when he noticed the dog, who he presumed to be the âJakeâ the woman had called out to, resting his head on Buckyâs non-injured thigh. He ran his fingers through the soft silky fur of the pupâs head, looking back up when he heard the woman's rapidly returning footsteps. She appeared from around an old tractor, med kit in tow. She saw the dog vibrating happily underneath Buckyâs attention and smiled softly.
âJake! LeaveâŠâ She paused looking at Bucky for his name.Â
âBucky. You can call me Bucky.â She smiled.
âY/n. Nice to meet you Bucky.â Buckyâs heart flipped in his chest at the sound of his name rolling off her tongue. His eyes followed her as she crouched down next to him, placing the med kit on the bench.Â
âAre you ok with me taking care of this or would you rather do it,â Y/n asked as she began to rifle through the box looking for all of the necessary supplies. Bucky was shocked, she just found this strange man in her barn and was going to help him out instead of calling the cops. He realized she was waiting for an answer, her eyes full of worry staring at him, waiting for an answer.Â
âOr, um, I can take you to the hospital, but that's a bit of a drive.â Bucky just shook his head.
âNo, no. Itâs fine. If you leave the supplies here I can take care of it. Thanks.â Y/n nodded standing up.
âOf course! Iâll get you a change of clothes. My brother left some clothes here, heâs about your height. Hopefully, they fit.â
Before Bucky could say anything else, Y/n walked out of the barn and disappeared, leaving Bucky alone with Jake and a med kit. Bucky gave the dog a final pet before tending to injury.
Once, he was cleaned up and in a fresh pair of clothes, Y/n brought him to the little farmhouse for some breakfast. Bucky sat on a stool watching Y/n cook.
âSo how did you end up in my barn? Itâs not every day that I get up to start chores and find a man in there.â She asked, flipping over the pancake in the skillet. Bucky chuckled scratching the back of his neck, trying to decide what to say.
âWell, uh⊠Itâs kind of a long story...âÂ
A few days had passed since breakfast that morning, him spilling his entire life life story to this woman. She promised to try and help him get back to his team, however, the first snow of the season had fallen that same evening and there was no way for them to drive to the town some thirty miles away with the ice and snow covering the roads.Â
âBeing in the middle of nowhere has its advantages and disadvantages.â She had told him, shoveling a path out to the barn the next morning. âThe fact that no plow trucks come through here just happens to be one of the shitty things.âÂ
Bucky felt strange just sitting around while she worked so he offered to help out while he was there. A sort of thank you for inadvertently saving his life. The more he worked around the farm, the more music he heard playing through his mind, but every time he tried to find the source, it would disappear and Y/N would appear from around a corner, tucking something into her pocket and then asking Bucky a question as she approached.Â
The same thing was happening again as Bucky heard the first few chords from a new song drift into his mind, the same volume as the song that first night he slept in the barn.
âFell in love with a girl that's a few years younger. Was a sister of a friend, didnât see it coming.â
Bucky set down the bale of hay he had started to take to the horses, to follow the music. He walked over towards the door of the barn, the music getting louder with each step he took.
âI was hanging with him when I heard the door open.â
He pushed open the door and looked out to see Y/n and Jake walking towards the barn. She had earbuds tucked in under her hat, humming softly, and with each step she took towards the barn the louder the music in Bucky's ears got. He felt his heart start to race, his mouth ran dry.
âShe walked into the room with a smile and thatâs when, her eyes looked at me and said quietly,â
Y/n looked up to see Bucky staring at her and plucked the earbuds out of her ears and tucked them into her pocket, the music playing in Buckyâs mind disappearing with them.
âHey, Bucky! I was lookinâ for ya!â She smiled at him, continuing to walk closer. âI was wondering if you could help me with something a little different.â She was standing right in front of him now, her bright eyes locking onto his. His pulse started to quicken as he hoped the cold masked the blush forming on his cheeks.Â
âW-what might that be?â Y/n giggled and placed a hand on his shoulder sparks flooding throughout his body as she pushed him back into the barn.Â
âI have to round up the cows today, since itâs snowed that means all of the bot flies are gone so we can go ahead and deworm them. I was hoping you could tag along. I know youâve probably never done anything like this but it would really help me out a ton.â She smiled sweetly at him as she paused by the tack room, heading inside to grab her saddle and other equipment for the task at hand.Â
âUh sure, Iâll give it a go,â Bucky replied, following her into the small room, grabbing the other saddle sitting on the rack. It was then Bucky decided that he would do just about anything to get Y/n to smile at him like that again. It was so warm and bright that he felt ten times warmer than he did just moments ago.
âAwesome! Thank you so much, Buck! If you want to tack up Shanty Iâll hop on Zippy and we can go bring those cows up to the cattle shed!âÂ
Bucky saddled up Shanty with some difficulty due to the fact he had no idea what the hell he was doing, but with Y/nâs help, the pair were ready to go. Bucky watched as Y/n skillfully mounted the red horse who was stomping around impatiently waiting for her to get on. Taking a deep breath, he carefully pulled himself up into the saddle and nodded for Y/n to lead the way. As the pair began to jog through the snow Bucky called out,
âI hope you know I havenât been on a horse since 1943, anâ never used emâ on a farm before so I have no idea what Iâm doinâ darlinâ.â
Y/n let out a laugh that seemed to sing off of the ice that covered a nearby pond. She looked over her shoulder and Bucky was convinced he had never seen a more beautiful sight. The morning sun reflected off the snow, causing its golden glow to dance across the landscape. Its golden rays were blocked by the brim of her dark cowboy hat, but the leather band almost seemed to be turned into gold as the beams of light that slipped around the edges wove into the intricate braid. Her eyes sparkled with something so warm and bright that Bucky was sure he was seeing an angel in person.Â
âDonât worry too much!â She replied, oblivious to the effect she had on the man.Â
âShantyâs a pro. She can basically do this on her own, she just prefers having someone on her back or a little extra guidance.â Y/n explained as the cow herd came into view. âJust point her in the right direction, she will do the rest.âÂ
Bucky nodded and watched as Y/n kicked Zippy forward toward the cows and once she rounded the back, the herd started running in his direction. Gripping onto the reins, he pointed Shanty in the direction and when the cows tried to jump out of line, Shanty would run and slide to a stop, forcing the cows to stay in a group as they ran towards the cattle shed.Â
The journey back to the cattle shed was considerably more work than the ride out, constantly trying to keep the frisky cows from darting off one way or another but eventually, they were all secured in the barn, Y/n smiled at Bucky.
âThank you for your help. I can take it from here. Meet you inside for dinner? I prepped some ravioli last week thatâs in the freezer.âÂ
Bucky smiled and agreed, leading Shanty and Zippy back to the barn, the goofy grin remaining on his face all the way there.
Bucky grumbled angrily as the wrench slipped out of his hand. He reached out from under the tractor with his left hand when he remembered that his left hand was, essentially, an all-purpose tool. After finally getting the stubborn bolt off, he pushed himself out from underneath the tractor and took a sip of the hot cider in his mug that Y/n insisted he take with him after dinner. In between bites of the best ravioli that he had ever eaten, Y/n mentioned that the tractor had a bust pipe and that he had gotten the parts but hadnât had the time to fix it herself so naturally, Bucky set off to fix it as soon as the dishes were done.Â
Just as Bucky was about to get back to work, he heard a new melody whisper in his ear.
I'm flying, shining, bright like just like the Leonids, Heading for you.
Wiping his hands off on an old shop towel, Bucky made his way back to the farmhouse, and with each step he took, the music got a little louder.
Slowly, but surely, lighting up the pyramids, On my way to you
Kicking off his snow and mud-covered boots in the mud room, Bucky followed the sound of the music, to the back porch where he found Y/n sitting with a mug in her hands gazing up at the stars.
Ooh, ooh. I've fallen like a star for you
The music was so loud at this point, that Bucky was convinced that it was integrating itself into the very fiber of his being. Taking a steadying breath, he reached out a hand and placed it on Y/nâs shoulder startling her her slightly before realizing it was just him. He watched as she hit the pause button, and the music that was flowing so clearly stopped. Bucky felt his heart rate pick up. There is no way that he's finally found her after all this time.
âHey Buck, What going on?â Y/n asks softly, offering a smile
âCan I see your Phone?â Bucky asks all in one breath.
Puzzled Y/n hands it to him. âUh, sure why?â
âI just want to try somethingâ He mumbled as he put the earbuds in and walked away from her to the opposite end of the porch. He locked eyes with her and hit play.
He watched as Y/nâs eyes grew wide, her hands flying up to cover her mouth. She heard it too. Bucky swallowed as he took a shaky step toward her, the music getting louder with each step he took until he was standing face-to-face with her.
Ooh, ooh. I've fallen like a star for you
âI think youâre my soulmateâ He whispered, reaching out to cup her face with his flesh hand, the metal one still holding onto the phone.
Y/n blinked a few times in surprise before surging forward and tackling him in a hug planting a firm but warm kiss on his lips. Bucky blinked in surprise but responded immediately, wrapping his other arm around her and pulling her flush against his body. Eventually, they parted and Y/n smiled up at him.
âDoes that mean youâll stay here with me?â She whispered.
Bucky pressed his forehead against hers before he replied, âForever and always, for as long as youâll have me.â

Tears In His Ferrari - 10
Character: Bucky Barnes x Farmer!Reader
Summary: Bucky Barnes, used to a life of luxury, takes on farm challenges in a bet with his father. Mud-stained Ferraris and a rustic farmhouse lead to unexpected personal growth, guided by the stern mentorship of Y/N, a farmer making his city-boy life difficult.
Theme: Fluff, Slice of Life, Heart-Warming.
Main Masterlist || If you enjoy my work, please consider buying me a coffee on: Ko-fi đđ»
Thank you to anyone who gave a like, reblog, and left a comment. It motivated me to write more.Â
Chapters: Chp 1, Chp 2,Chp 3 , Chp 4 , Chp 5 , Chp 6 , Chp 7 , Chp 8 , Chp 9 , Chp 10 , Chp 11 , Chp 12.
Bucky's heroic story of helping Toby's grandmother and bringing her to the hospital with his red Ferrari became the talk of the town.
The next day, he went to the fresh market with Y/N's parents to buy fruits and flowers.
He was planning to revisit Tobyâs grandmother. He didnât know why, but he felt a sense of melancholy toward elders, especially since his own grandparents had passed away before he was born.
As Bucky looked at the oranges, the locals greeted him warmly, especially the elders.
One grandfather said, âThank you for helping Toby's grandma, young man. Here's some fresh corn and potatoes for you.â
Bucky smiled warmly and replied, âOh, yes, we should help each other.â
Another grandmother approached him and said, âAre you the Barnes kid who helped my friend? Here's an orange for you.â
The kind old lady handed him baskets of oranges, her eyes twinkling with gratitude.
Then he felt someone tap his shoulder. He felt like a big shadow towering over him. It was Thor.
Thor exclaimed, "Buddy, you were a great help yesterday. Here, I'll give you my biggest catch today."
Bucky widened his eyes in surprise. "Oh no, it's alright. Urghh."
This was the first time in Bucky's life that he carried a heavy fish.
With each step he took, someone would greet him and give him something. He had never experienced this sense of community back in the city, and he appreciated how supportive the locals were of each other.
Samanta chuckled upon seeing Bucky looking clueless. âYou've become the local celebrity.â
Bucky blinked in surprise. âReally?â
âYup. Oh, my daughter just called. Some people are at your farm.â
âThat's right. I have to go back.â Bucky clapped his hands excitedly. He suspected that what he requested from his dad had arrived.
He stepped on the gas and drove fast to his place. When he arrived, he saw a few teenagers and kids standing near his house.
Y/N was also there, looking a bit overwhelmed as she guarded the youngsters from entering the house.
The truck stopped, and Bucky got out of the car.
He greeted Y/N with a smile. "What's up?"
Y/N sighed in relief. "They want to see your car, but I thought they needed your permission first."
The group of youngsters looked at Bucky with puppy eyes. In a second, he remembered being a young kid, also interested in sports cars when his dad brought him to the F1 race car. The experience was amazing, and it made him fall in love with fast cars.
As a fellow car lover, Bucky welcomed them. "It's alright. Do you want to see what it looks like inside?"
"Yeah!!" The youngsters cheered in excitement.
Bucky showed them his Ferrari car and enthusiastically explained the engine and the machinery.
Y/N observed Bucky, who looked genuinely excited. She remarked, âYou've become the celebrity.â
Bucky chuckled, unable to contain his enthusiasm. âI can't help it.â
âBy the way,â Y/N continued, âyour father sent a pick-up truck. I didn't know you needed another one.â
Bucky's eyes lit up. âIt's here? Yes! And it's not for me.â
âThen for who?â Y/N inquired, curiosity piqued.
đ„
At the hospital, Toby was speechless when he saw the pick-up truck. It looked brand new and far superior to the old truck they had to sell to pay his father's debt.
He walked around the truck, inspecting it from front to back, then turned to Bucky and enveloped him in a grateful hug. âThank you, bro,â he said earnestly.
Bucky returned the hug with a smile. âYou're welcome, buddy.â
After Toby rushed back to the hospital to share the news with his grandfather, Y/N approached Bucky. âThat was really nice of you,â she remarked.
Bucky nodded, a sense of fulfillment washing over him. âI realized how important a car is for Toby. He needs it to drive his grandma and carry boxes of honey.â
With the means to help, Bucky felt compelled to use it.
Y/N smiled warmly. Witnessing Bucky's generosity and compassion, she couldn't help but admire him even more.
Bucky's generous gift quickly spread throughout the town, making him the hottest topic of discussion. Suddenly, he found himself at the center of attention, not for his wealth or status, but for his kindness and willingness to help others.
The children in the town looked up to him as a cool role model, inspired by his actions to make a positive difference in the community.
With Toby's grandmother gradually improving, and Toby himself working diligently to sell honey at markets and to local households, the spirit of gratitude and determination seemed to infuse the air.
Despite initially finding farming challenging, Bucky began feeling accepted and belonging in his new life.
Though he still encountered difficulties, he realized that the rewards of helping others and being part of a close-knit community far outweighed any hardships he faced.
Bucky hadn't opened his social media for a while since he was already busy with farming.
******
His story has also spread widely on social media. However, it wasn't Bucky who initiated it.
But who did? Of course, it was Kate. She inserted herself into Bucky's story as if she were a part of the effort to help him.
During her live session, she recounted the events with a touch of theatricality, emphasizing her own role in the act of kindness.
"And that's when Bucky and I sprang into action," she exclaimed dramatically, her eyes sparkling with manufactured emotion. "Together, we rushed Toby's grandmother to the hospital, our hearts filled with determination to make a difference!"
Her viewers were quick to shower her with praise, captivated by her portrayal of a compassionate and selfless individual.
"You're such an inspiration, Kate!"
"Wow, I had no idea you were so involved in charity work. You're amazing!"
"Thank you for using your platform to spread awareness and help those in need. You're truly making a difference!"
With each compliment, Kate's smile widened, basking in her audience's admiration as she skillfully crafted her image as a philanthropic icon.
She kept smiling as she scrolled through the comments until she noticed someone mentioning "What about Y/N?"
Kate's smile faltered, and she let out a sigh.
"What's wrong?" inquired one of her viewers.
Kate sighed again. "Well, we only know what people choose to show us on the outside, not what's really going on behind the scenes."
The viewers were intrigued. "Is this about Y/N?"
Kate hesitated, then replied cryptically, "I don't want to name names, but let's just say there's someone who's been quite influential in Bucky's life, and it's had some unfortunate consequences for my brother."
"Your brother, the celebrity chef Paul?" another viewer asked.
"He can't cook anymore because of a car accident, right?"
The comments continued to pour in, each one adding to the speculation. It was precisely what Kate wanted. She leaned back in her chair, a satisfied smirk playing at the corners of her lips as she watched her fans dissect the situation for her.
Glancing down at her ruined shoes, a reminder of her unexpected encounter with the mud earlier, Kate clicked her tongue in annoyance. "Never underestimate me," she murmured to herself, a hint of determination in her voice.
đïž
Bucky, who had been feeling clueless, had just finished cleaning up the sheep's stable. He made his way back to his house to freshen up.
Archie, the puppy, had eagerly awaited his return, wagging his tail excitedly. "Woof."
"Hey, buddy, I missed you too," Bucky greeted, bending down to pet the eager pup.
Once inside, Bucky headed straight to the sink to wash his hands, feeling the grime of farm work clinging to his skin. As he scrubbed, he couldn't help but notice his phone incessantly buzzing with notifications.
"What's going on?" Bucky wondered aloud, setting down the soap to check his phone. He was met with a flood of messages and tags from various people. Among them was a tag that caught his attention: #Y/N and Paul.
Curious, he clicked on it, and his screen filled with photos of Y/N dressed in a chef's outfit, standing beside none other than Paul, the celebrity chef who also happened to be Kate's brother.
Bucky's heart sank as he read the accompanying captions and watched a reel detailing Paul's accident, along with rumors suggesting that it wasn't him driving the sports car, but rather a woman whose name was still unknown.
His thoughts racing, Bucky was startled when he heard a familiar voice behind him. "Here's the dinner."
He nearly jumped out of his skin, turning to find Y/N standing there, a concerned expression on her face as she looked at him. "What's wrong?" she asked, noticing his troubled demeanor.

Chapter Four: The Farmer's Daughter
The Farmer's Daughter - (A WandaNat Story)
Masterlist
Summary: Natasha quickly realizes how fucked she is with Wanda Maximoff on the farm.
Word Count: 1.4K
Content: The Start of Big Time Flirty Wanda Maximoff
The woman spoke in a slight accent, making Natasha smile like an idiot.
"I uh-" The redhead cleared her throat. "I'm Natasha. Natasha Romanoff." She took steps forward with her extended.
Green eyes watched her carefully before quickly looking Natasha up and down.
Yes, she noticed the tags around Natasha's neck.
"I work here. On the farm." Natasha spoke with honesty as a soft hand met hers. The touch was gentle. "Oh!" Green eyes sounded surprised with a hint of excitement. "Well, in that case, I'm Wa-"
"Wanda!"
"Our girl!"
Everyone turned to the sound of Erik and Magda exiting the house and running down the porch steps. Excited to see their daughter, Wanda Maximoff.
Their daughter Wanda!
Natasha's eyes became wide. She pulled her hand away and watched as the mysterious person turned around and greeted Erik and Magda with a hug.
Shit! Natasha thought. She hated how her heart was beating right now.
What's worse was the smile Wanda shined when she briefly looked Natasha's way after exiting the hug with her parents.
It was the most beautiful smile she had ever seen be graced upon someone. Natasha especially liked the two front teeth. They were cute, and she could feel herself start to melt under Wanda.
This was trouble for Natasha. Wanda could sense this as she looked back at Natasha before glancing at her friends.
"Sam!" Erik turned away from his daughter and stuck his hand out to shake the driver of the Jeep. "Sir." The man inside the open Jeep stuck his hand out the nonexistent window and shook Erik's hand. Erik then looked from the man named Sam to the other occupants of the SUV. "Bucky, Carol, Darcy, Monica. Hello!" Erik smiled and waved.
They waved back.
"Hey, Mr. L. Who's that?" Asked a dark-haired younger woman with glasses. Darcy. She was pointing at Natasha.
All eyes were on her again.
"Oh!" Erik spoke up with a smile. Natasha moved a few steps closer and made sure to make eye contact with everyone. She raised her hand and waved. "Hi, I'm Natasha. Natasha Romanoff, and I'm Mr. Lehnsherr's new farmhand..." Her eyes slowly drifted past Erik and Magda and to the green eyes of Wanda. "I see myself being her for the foreseeable future." Natasha's eyes darted away.
Sam looked down at Natasha's chain.
"Did you serve?"
"Samuel!" Erik snapped his head towards the driver and shook it. Sam made a what?? face. Natasha cleared her throat and nodded. "No, it's alright," Natasha said to Erik as politely as possible. "But, yes, I did. Eight years."
Natasha missed the sound of Wanda's quiet gasp.
Sam swallowed his throat. "I have a buddy, Riley, who serves. It's honorable." Natasha smiled but shook her head. "Thanks." She wasn't ready to talk about the past she just left.
Wanda could see that, and her teasing smile and wandering eyes softened as she stared at the side profile of the sweaty redhead.
"Well, you're jacked!" A supportive voice came from the guy in the passenger seat. Wanda quickly looked in the direction of her friend Bucky. She watched his eyes scan Natasha like she was something he wanted.
Wanda unconsciously flared her nostrils and stepped forward, faking enthusiasm before Natasha could respond. The older woman watched Wanda. "Well, thank you, Sam, for driving!" Wandas walked up to the door and hung on it with a smile as she looked back at Carol, Darcy, and Monica. "Keep these boys in line, Danvers." The blonde laughed. "You got it."
Darcy looked from Wanda to Bucky.
She noticed and would always have Wanda's back. "It's rude to stare, Buck," Darcy said, making him pull his eyes away from Natasha. "I wasn't staring." He said before realizing how loud he was and turned away.
Missing the glare Wanda sent and the tilt of the head from Natasha.
Regardless, Sam laughed and got the jist. "Have a good one, Wanda." He said quietly with a wink. Monica slapped the back of his shoulder. "Just drive."
"See ya, Mr. L!" Darcy sang from the backseat for everyone in the car. Erik smiled and waved back as Sam started to turn the Jeep around. "Be safe!"
Everyone waved as they passed Natasha, who smiled and returned a courtesy wave. The redhead noticed a wink sent by the man named Bucky from the side mirror. She turned away and found the eyes of Wanda Maximoff looking up her body. Natasha swallowed and cleared her throat. "Well, I'll let you all catch up." Natasha smiled and turned to walk away when Wanda spoke up. "Wait!"
Natasha stopped and slowly turned back. "Come join us for lunch." Natasha looked past Wanda to Erik and Magda. They weren't planning on having lunch quite yet, but there was nothing wrong with having Natasha join and help out.
Especially if Wanda was going to join instead of spending her time ignoring her responsibilities by posting pictures and videos on the internet all day.
"Oh no, I have more work to get done and-" Erik stepped up and placed a hand on his daughter's shoulder. "Romanoff, come on. Wanda won't bite." He joked, but that's just what Natasha was afraid of. Wanda sinking her teeth into her because Natasha knew the second that happened, it would be all over.
Natasha cursed internally and nodded. She placed her work gloves into her back pocket, and followed the family inside their home. And Natasha didn't mean for it to happen, but her eyes found themselves glued onto the back of Wanda's tan thighs.
Wanda could feel it and hide a smile as she turned her head to the side. She cleared her throat.
Natasha immediately looked up and turned red from being caught. Wanda looked up and down Natasha before raising her eyebrows and turning back. "Mama," Wanda spoke up as she kicked off her shoes by the front door. Natasha was afraid of what was going to come out of Wanda's mouth. "Yes?" Magda and Erik stopped to hear their daughter's next question.
Wanda briefly glimpsed at Natasha, who was gently stepping out of her boots.
"Oh shit."Â The redhead thought.
"Where is Natasha staying?" She asked, knowing she made Natasha sweat. "Tiny House," Erik said. "No need to worry about her." He smiled and kissed his daughter's head before turning to Natasha. "Once you wash up, join me in the kitchen, and we'll cut up some potatoes." Natasha nodded. "Yes, sir."
Magda patted her husband's shoulder as he walked past. "Like Papa said, no need to worry about Natasha here, little one." Magda then turned to Natasha as Wanda walked up a few steps. "She always worries about the farmhands." Natasha looked past Magda and found Wanda winking.
Oh, she definitely "worried."
Natasha smiled. "Well, nice to know there's another person that'll be here in case anything happens." Magda smiled at that. "Oh, is chicken, potatoes, and rice okay for lunch? My husband just assumed." Natasha thought back to all the pecking she endured. She nodded. "Yes, ma'am."
"Good." Magda smiled and went to join her husband in the kitchen.
Natasha looked up to Wanda on the steps. Wanda was staring back with a teasing smile. "You were checking me out." The younger of the two said.
"You checked me out, too," Natasha replied. Wanda lightly laughed. "Yeah, but didn't you hear? IÂ worry about the farmhands."
Natasha closed her mouth and rolled her tongue over her teeth, unknowingly making Wanda bite her bottom lip. "Well..." Natasha looked up to Wanda. "You don't need to worry about me. It won't do us any good."
Wanda didn't like that. She pulled her teeth back into her mouth and smiled with the look of someone who hated being told no.
She stepped down a few stairs and lowered her voice just above a whisper. "Being bad is more fun." Natasha swallowed as Wanda came closer and looked up at the body of the redhead slowly. "Natasha." Wanda husked out her name and made Natasha look her way as their green eyes reached each other. "You'll see." She said before turning around.
Natasha could breathe again.
"Oh, and in case you were wondering, my room is at the end of the hall on the left." Natasha gave nothing. So Wanda smiled. "You know the window you can see from the tiny house."
Natasha walked away with this new information and locked herself in the bathroom.
Her hands gripped the sides of the sink as she looked at herself in the mirror. "Get yourself together, Romanoff." She whispered shouted at herself. "Yes, she's fucking incredible, but she's your boss's daughter." Natasha sighed, and a flicker of Wanda smiling and her tan skin worked its way into Natasha's mind.
She looked up at herself in the mirror again.
"Get it together."

On the final Saturday that Bucky was at the farm, the two of you practically stayed pressed together. Itâs not as if you were unproductive, but you were glued at the hip, never leaving the office for too long without the other under the guise of tying up loose business ends before his departure. You knew once he was gone, heâd have to take all his burdens back off Steve, leaving him swamped with work, unable to pay you any more attention than he did his other associates.
With your efficiency and his inability to say no to you, all âworkâ had been completed before noon. Sure, you couldâve dragged it out, but then you wouldnât have had time to just enjoy each otherâs presence like you had gotten used to. Before that could happen, though, you presented him with one last task.
Bucky sat on your oversized desk chair with you in between his legs. His chin was tucked over your shoulder as he rubbed up and down your thigh with his ringed hand. The cool metal gave you goosebumps on your bare skin, the nice weather allowing you to wear shorts and the lack of physical labor giving Bucky the opportunity to don his jewelry once again. You ignored the way your body shuddered at his touch, instead looking back at him over your shoulder with a smirk.
âOkay, cowboy. I think weâve got your first few months of shipments all planned, so now onto my last order of business.â
He cocked his head to look at you with an amused, but tentative smile. âAnd what might that be?â
âPull out a pen.â You stood up and shuffled the papers on your desk, looking for a blank one and setting it in front of him. You took a seat on the other side, not missing his slight pout and confusion as to why you moved so far and what was going on.
âNow that weâve reached the end of the month, I want to assess what youâve learned. Iâm gonna shoot questions at you, and you write your answer so we can determine whether or not you actually took in information or just followed me around and mooched off my free meals.â
Bucky laughed when you shot him a wink and happily obliged you, a sparkle in his eyes, admiring the way you were demanding something of him with a sweet smile on your face, just like the first time you met. He gave a slight nod, pen at the ready. âAlright, sweet Honeybee. Hit me with it.â
You crossed your arms and legs, watching him as you rattled everything off you could think of, from super obvious things, like which animal lays eggs, to asking nearly impossible things, like the brand of feed given to the dairy cows. Buckyâs reactions to each question were a treat, some causing him to light up with knowledge, others making him roll his eyes at your specificity.
âLast question. This oneâs worth a thousand points. Write something you think will impress me. Something out of the blue, whateverâs on your mind. Anything at all.â
Bucky sat there for a moment, tapping the cap of the pen against his bottom lip in thought. You watched his playful features morph into something serious, something soft, as he scribbled one line at the bottom of the paper.
âI wish I could stay here longer.â
You leaned forward so could read his paper upside down, scanning the answers, each one surprisingly correct. Not a single one was off and he even put more information than youâd asked for on some of them. You were not only amazed with the way he indulged your ridiculous request, but with how this whole time, he had actually been listening and watching, holding onto every word and fulfilling his side of the deal.
As you looked up from the paper and into his eyes, you could feel the warmth through his gaze even that far apart. You stood up again and Bucky did the same, coming around to meet you. It was as if your bodies were magnetic, drawing you towards each other until his one hand was on your cheek, the other wrapped around your waist as yours perched on his hips.
His eyes shifted between yours and he closed his eyes, drawing his forehead against yours before he spoke against your lips. âIâm serious. I love every moment with you. And Iâm sorry itâll have to end.â
You swallowed and let your eyes flutter closed as you leaned into his touch and nodded. âI know. But I get that you have work to do and it was already a lot for me to request you being here for so long. But justâŠfor right now, be with me. Enjoy what little time is left of this with me. Please.â It came out as a whisper, a plea for him to remain present while he still could. You opened your eyes and looked up through your lashes to see him searching for your gaze.
He whispered back, âYou donât have to ask me twice. Say the word and itâs yours. Iâm yours. And Iâll be right there if you ever need anything. Whatever you want, Honey. And right now, Iâm here with you. I only want to be⊠with you.â
Your eyes closed again and you nestled into his chest in satisfaction at the depth of his words. You knew he was saying he would be present, but it meant so much more. For him to make a promise like that, extending beyond just business, made you feel supported, protected, embraced.
He pulled you closer if that was even possible and pressed his lips to your hairline, then using his hand against your cheek, he pulled your head so you were both leaning back enough that your gazes met before he smashed his lips against yours. It was with purpose and a new sort of urgency that you hadnât really experienced in the slower kisses and pecks you had shared. You began to walk backwards and Bucky followed, lips attached to yours in a near-lock as your tongues danced, not unlike your feet, performing similarly to the two-step you had taught him weeks before. Your hands slid up a down his chest and began to pop open the buttons of his flannel shirt as his ran under yours, feeling the softness of your belly and tracing upwards, raising the hem of your shirt as his callused fingertips sent a thrill through you.
The two of you removed your clothing piece by piece, discarding them carelessly as you crossed through the living room and waltzed carefully up the steps, grateful Peter was out of the house for the day and helping Curtis with the weekend chores.
Clad only in underwear, you grabbed Buckyâs hand and pulled him towards your room, falling down on the bed as he crawled over you. His lips met yours once again as you widened your legs, allowing his hips to grind on your core. Your gasp at the sensation allowed Buckyâs tongue to explore your mouth, swallowing down each otherâs moans and drawing closer and closer. Bucky pulled away for a second to catch his breath, the both of you looking deeply into the otherâs eyes and panting.
His fingers traced down your side to play with the hem of your cotton panties, and you nodded, wordlessly giving him the permission he needed to pull them down. Bucky groaned at the sight of the damp fabric as he dragged the material down your legs, kissing back up your body and stoping to lovingly lick and nip at your neck as you whined and writhed for some sort of friction again.
âJamie, please.â
He smiled and sighed at the way you begged for his touch, not used to being the one in control of anything since heâd been here, and now holding your pleasure in his hands. His fingers reached down to find your clit, dipping towards your entrance first to gather your arousal before making slow, teasing circles on the sensitive button. His soft touch set your body on fire. It had been so long since youâd been this intimate with anyone, all of your focus on the farm, and the exhaustion after a long week, not to mention the hurt from Jake deterring you from the desire for a partner.
âIâm here, Iâm with you, Honey. Iâve got you-give you whatever you want. Just wanna make you feel good.â
Sensing your sensitivity and deducing how long it had likely been for you, Bucky slowly slid his middle finger through your slit, his eyes never leaving your face. He didnât want to miss a single second of the way you nearly crumbled under his touch. Your eyes were half-lidded in pleasure as your body lurched forward at his slow, gentle intrusion, accompanied by a moan. He drank in the view, more gorgeous than he imagined you could be, back bowing at his touch. Bucky added another finger and the sensation of the cool metal against the heat between your legs was almost too much to handle.
Your legs began to shake as he slowly coaxed in a third finger, his thumb gently strumming your clit, deft fingers stretching your entrance. The feeling was overwhelming and pushing you impossibly close to an edge you hadnât experienced in years at the hands of another.
âJamie, Jamie itâs so much. So good. Iâm so close.â It came out between hiccuping gasps as you tucked your face into his neck, throwing your arms around his muscular back and legs around his waist, pinning his hand between your bodies. You were clinging to him with your whole being as you reached your peak with a keen, pussy clenching his fingers almost painfully, but Bucky didnât mind. He wouldâve let you break his arm to see and feel the way he was wringing pleasure from the distant corners of your body right now. He continued to slowly pump his fingers against your walls, bringing you down from your high.
You wouldâve collapsed onto the bed if Bucky hadnât had a firm arm behind you, holding you to his chest where you had curled into him, as you gasped for air. You were finally able to pull your face away and look into his eyes again, his burning with desire and yours hazy with post-orgasmic bliss.
âDo you, uh, do you have a-â Buckyâs eager nod cut you off as he pressed another sloppy kiss against your lips before slinking back off the bed and walking towards his bag in the corner of the room.
âI think so. Let me check.â Bucky hadnât expected anything like this to happen over this month, so he definitely didnât have a condom prepared. Perhaps his emergency one was still in his wallet, but he honestly wasnât sure. He was pleasantly surprised to find it easily, rolling it on and coming back on the bed towards you.
As he hovered over you, you ran your hands along the scruff on the sides of his cheeks before pulling him down for another kiss. You could feel the weight of his hard length resting against your lower stomach, reaching down to stroke him gently. Bucky tensed at the sensation with a groan, throwing his head toward your shoulder and taking the opportunity to kiss your neck and down your collarbone before making his plea.
âRide me, Honey. Need to feel you.â
You bit your lip nodding, complying with his request and moving to sit up as Bucky laid down against your pillows, right next to where you had just been sprawled out. You shuffled on your knees to straddle his hips, grinding down and letting his cock run through your folds, slick in preparation for him. You reached a hand down to perch his tip at your entrance, basking in the groan he let out at the sight. You slowly lowered yourself, the broad tip pushing your walls outward, pressure causing you to sharply gasp when he passed the threshold of your tight hole.
Your thigh muscles strained as you attempted to slowly but steadily lower yourself on his length, hyper aware of the delicious stretch of his thick cock inside you. The two of you sighed in relief as you bottomed out, nails gripping tightly into Buckyâs shoulders. Bucky held your hips as you adjusted to him, careful to not squeeze too hard from every time your tightness choked his dick. He fought the urge to throw his head back against the headboard, wanting to keep his eyes on you and where your bodies were connected. The sight of you splitting yourself open over him nearly made him come on the spot, but he tightened every muscle in his body again, trying to resist the urge. He only had one condom, after all, and he wanted to drag out this feeling for as long as possible.
He could see it on your face and feel your body start to relax as your nails gently scratched over his tattooed chest. You rocked your hips, testing the waters, and dragging a whine from both your lips. Your speed picked up, his hands continuing to guide you, finding a smooth rhythm that pulled moans, grunts, and gasps out of the two of you, until just like before, Bucky could feel you clenching again. He lowered his one hand, thumb finding your clit and rubbing tender circles, leading you both barreling towards a shared peak. Your hips stuttered and wavered with exhaustion, but Bucky continued guiding you with his firm, strong hand.
âCâmon Honey. You can do it. I can feel youâre close. Let go for me, sweet thing. Please. Come with me.â His voice was gruff, dripping with desire.
Your hands ran down the muscles of his torso and squeezed against his abs, nails digging in slightly. You used your last bit of energy to nod your head and urge him to help you along. Bucky planted his feet on the mattress, thrusting in tandem with the grind of your hips. You leaned down for a final kiss, wanting to be ever closer to him. As he gave into the gesture, it felt like everything hit you at once along with your shared orgasm: the sweet, tender moment, the reverence and respect he was treating you with throughout, and the fact that you didnât know if it would ever happen again or if youâd see him after tomorrow.
Bucky came with a deep, but soft growl beneath you as he stroked your hair after youâd pulled away from his lips and tucked yourself into his neck again. He sat there, letting you cling to him for a second before he felt the unexpected wetness against his shoulder. Tears has started streaming down your face, and when Bucky caught a glimpse, his look was similar. Jaw clenched with water in his eyes.
The next morning, it was time for Bucky to go. The two of you had arranged it so you could have one last drive to the gas station together where youâd be meeting Gio.
Bucky convinced you to let him drive your truck for a final time, and you agreed, easily giving in to his request. He drove with the windows down, radio low on the dash, and one hand on the wheel. The other rested on your thigh while you clutched the arm attached to it against your chest and rested your head on his shoulder. His cheek was pressed against the top of your head. Buckyâs callused thumb made small circles on your skin as the breeze blew through the cab, paired with the warm glow of the early morning light, sun shining on your time together like it always had.

~*~
You awake the next morning feeling peaceful and well-rested, a welcome ache between your legs that reminds you of the night prior.Â
You reach across the bed, a smile finding your lips when you feel the warm body of the man beside you.Â
Peeling your eyes open, you push yourself into a seated position and look at him with nothing but softness in your gaze.Â
âGood morning,â he whispers, his voice thick with sleep.
You lean forward and place a gentle kiss to his lips.Â
âGood morning to you,â you reply softly.Â
You roll onto your side and lightly trace over the muscles covering his chest, content to spend this time with him.
As if hearing your thoughts, the Gods decide to shatter your peace.Â
Thereâs a harsh knock on the door that has ice shooting through your veins.Â
Jamesâ eyes dart from you to the front door, and then heâs pushing to his feet.Â
âStay here,â he murmurs, tugging on his trousers and heading toward the door. He picks up his tunic along the way, but doesnât bother fully buttoning it.Â
You slowly rise to your feet and tug on your white slip, eyes darting around the room for your sword, only for you to realize that itâs currently in the kitchen, leaning against the wall.Â
If you move quickly enough, you can grab it now and hide behind the wall before he gets the door open.Â
With quick feet, you do exactly that, following silently after James and grabbing your sword, then pressing your back against the wall, out of sight.Â
He pulls the door open, brows frown together.Â
âIâm looking for a woman. Has she come by here?â A man asks. He wears the garb of a knight, though not one of this kingdom.Â
James doesnât know much about you, but he knows that he never wants to put you in danger. And if the man standing before him means to harm you, he wonât let that happen.Â
âNo, I apologize,â James says easily, going to close the door only for the blond on the other end to stop it with his foot.Â
His eyes are trained on the daggers on the table. More importantly, the gems decorating the hilt.Â
James follows his gaze, but by the time the pieces click in his mind, itâs too late. The stranger is forcing his way into Jamesâ little house.Â
âYou have seen her. Where is she?â He demands, unsheathing his sword and aiming it at the brunet.Â
James raises his hands in surrender, taking slow steps back.Â
âI know not who you speak of,â he insists, though he feels increasingly nervous.Â
âThe woman of which those daggers belong. Where is she? I will not ask again.â
James stumbles over the uneven floors as the blond swipes his sword, falling to the floor as the blade bites into his bicep.Â
âThen I suppose you will have to kill me,â He says simply, though his heart is in his chest.Â
âNo!â You exclaim, darting out from behind the wall and sliding between the men, sword raised right as the blond swings his down.Â
The two swords clash and the brunet behind you winces at such proximity to death.Â
The blondâs eyes widen at the sight of you standing before him in nothing more than your nightdress.Â
âPrincess?â He asks, withdrawing his sword immediately.
âYou will fall back,â you command, rising to your full height and glaring at him.Â
His brows pull together, and he looks at the man on the ground in confusion.Â
âThis man has lied about your whereabouts. He knows you are here, he cannot be trusted.â
âYou will stand down. A life for a life, this man saved me. I owe him a debt.â
Steve glares at you and you match the look, not backing down.Â
âI could order it,â you remind him, âthough we are not on my land, you are sworn to obey me.â
He grinds his teeth together but slowly takes a step back, huffing out a breath of disbelief.Â
âGo check to make sure you werenât followed. Secure the area,â you order, turning your back to him to signal the end of the conversation.Â
You reach for Jamesâ hand and help him to his feet, watching as he and Steve face off for a long moment. You turn to the blond and quirk your brow at him, waiting for him to obey your orders.Â
Finally, he turns on his heel and marches outside, mumbling profanities the entire time.Â
You turn back to the brunet and inspect the wound on his arm, a frown on your face at the idea of him being hurt because of you.Â
âPrincess?â He asks, a little stunned at the fact that you didnât tell him youâre royalty.Â
You sigh and lead him by the hand to the bathroom to clean and dress his wound.Â
âIt's not deep. It should heal fairly quickly,â you murmur, cleaning the wound on his arm and avoiding his eyes as you prepare to tell him the complete truth.Â
âIâm Princess (Y/n) of Aresia. The third Eldest of Queen Cathana.â
His brows pull together at your words.
âCathana the Cruel?â He asks, to which you nod.Â
âMother has many names, that being one of her most famous. It was given to her many years ago after she slaughtered the family of a man who raped my youngest sister.â You slowly bring your eyes to his. âI do not think her to be cruel for what she did. I think she was merciful, and those people were lucky that my older sister and I were not permitted to seek justice.â
He nods, entranced by the passion and fire in your eyes.
âYour King,â you sneer his title, âstormed out Kingdom. Set fire to the Palace, to the village. His aim is to take what never was meant to be his. And so I ran. I fled the city under order of the Queen. All my sisters did. We were to flee in different directions. I know not if any of them have survived. Steve... the man at the door... he is sworn to me. He has sacrificed many things to serve the royal guard, to serve me. One of the only men to ever be trusted by the royal family.â
As you explain it, it all makes so much more sense.Â
He shouldâve known, really. Given your clothes and your weapons and the way you carry yourself. It shouldâve been obvious to him.Â
âI have spent the days learning the lands, reading the maps. My sisters have fled across the continent, but I intend to reclaim what is mine. I would like to find them along the way, but I know not for how long I will be safe here.â
James shakes his head, reaching for you once youâve finished tying the fabric around the wound on his arm.
âI would never do anything to put you in danger, that you must know,â he says, his voice borderline desperate.Â
A small smile tugs at your cheeks and you nod, reaching up to hold his face gently in your hands.Â
âI know that, James. But it is not you who I fear. Not anymore. Now that Steve is here, it is only a matter of time before your King realizes at least one of the Princesses is alive. I would not be surprised if he had his men searching the forests and the villages for me as we speak. I have enjoyed our time together, but I cannot stay any longer.â
His hands come up to cover yours on his face.
âThen I will go with you.â
You chuckle weakly and shake your head.
âMy path surely leads to battle. You are not a warrior, James. I cannot put you in that sort of danger.â
He shakes his head, âI can learn. Have Steve teach me. I will swear an oath to you if I must, but I will not let you walk into battle without me by your side. I will follow you if I must, but I... I've only just found you, (Y/n). I will not lose you so soon.â
Your heart is warmed by his words and you sigh softly.Â
âI suppose it would be helpful to have another warrior alongside us on our journey. And you know the lands better than myself and Steve. But if you are to join us, you must obey my commands.â
A small smirk finds his lips and he kisses the inside of your wrist.Â
âI think last night is a good demonstration of how good I am at following orders.â
Heat blazes in your core at the memory and you shake your head at him.Â
âRight. I will go find Steve and inform him that he will be training you,â you whisper, pulling out of his grip and heading toward the door.Â
You tug on your dress on the way, a million thoughts swarming through your head as you make your way toward the blond soldier scouting the perimeter of the farm.Â
âSteve,â You call, jogging over to him when he stops walking.Â
âYes, Princess?â
You step in front of him, looking up into his blue eyes.
âThat is not how I wanted our reunion to go,â you murmur, reaching for his hand and holding it tightly in yours.Â
âAnd how were you expecting it to go?â He questions, a single eyebrow raised.Â
You look up at him then lunge into his arms, wrapping yourself around him tightly.Â
He stumbles back a step then falls onto his back in the grass, arms wrapping around your protectively, always protecting you.Â
âYouâre alive,â you whisper, holding onto him as if heâll disappear in an instant. He chuckles softly and maneuvers the two of you into a seated position, pulling you onto his lap and holding you against his chest.Â
âI made you a promise, Princess,â he reminds you gently, rocking you side to side.Â
You slowly pull away and look into his eyes, a thousand questions racing through your mind.
âHave you heard anything of my sisters? My mother? Do you know if there are any survivors?âÂ
He sighs heavily, smoothing your hair away from your face with one hand.
âI know that several of your sisters have survived, and your mother is being kept alive within the Palace. I know not how many members of the guard have survived, but I know they are scattered throughout the tunnels beneath Aresia and the surrounding forests.â
A weight lifts from your chest and you hug him tightly again.Â
âThen there is hope,â you whisper.Â
He chuckles and presses a gentle kiss to the top of your head, âSo long as you are alive, Princess, hope will remain alive with you.â
You walk the perimeter of the farm with Steve, discussing all that you have learned and what you have planned so far, and he shares with you the information he was able to gather.
Thereâs a gathering of warriors not far from Jamesâ farm. Steve had spent some time with them while hiding from the Lornillian guards.Â
You turn to the blond when you approach the small house, holding his hands tenderly between your own.Â
âJames has offered to come with us. To fight alongside us. I have agreed.â
Steve blinks at you then laughs as if you told the funniest joke in the world.Â
âWhat use have we for a farm boy? I doubt he can even wield a sword.â
You smile up at him, âwhich is why you shall instruct him.â
Suddenly the situation is not so funny to Steve.
âMe?â
You nod, âyes, you.â
âBut-â
âWe will need every sword we have, Steve. He is strong, and he is willing to fight. He has... protected me... been kind to me. I will not order you to do it, but I will let you know that it would mean a great deal to me if you would.â
He watches you for a long moment with those endless blue eyes before huffing a sigh.Â
âI almost wish you had ordered it,â he murmurs, opening the door to the house and motioning for you to go inside.Â
You nod gratefully and enter, smiling warmly at James.
He looks between you and Steve for a long moment before dropping his eyes to his hands, suddenly not so sure of himself.Â
Itâs obvious that thereâs a history between the two of you, and anyone can tell how much you mean to the blond by the way he looks at you.Â
How can James ever hope to compare to this warrior? Someone so strong and so brave. Willing to fight for you and die for you.
âWe will begin your training tomorrow. We will use wooden staffs... branches or anything of the sort. You must learn to wield a sword and take a hit. Once you do, we will begin combat.â
Steve turns to you after speaking, his eyebrows pulled together, âwhen do you want to make for the tunnels? Meet with your people?â
You gnaw on your bottom lip for a moment, trying to contemplate the timeframe before you.
The longer you wait, the stronger their army will be. But it could also grant you a stronger army in the process. Give your people more time to gather themselves, gather supplies.
The Lornillian army may have the upper hand of the Palace, but you and your people know the grounds, and that is something that will be key to reclaiming what is rightfully yours.Â
âWe will remain for one more moon cycle. Then we will leave.â You turn to James again, reaching for his hand and giving it a gentle squeeze.
âYou do not have to join us. You have a duty here,â you whisper, looking deeply into his eyes.Â
He nods, a small smile on his face.Â
âI now have a duty to you, as well, Princess.â
Steve watches the exchange, his stomach flipping with unease.Â
He does not like the way the farm boy looks at you.Â
No one should be looking at you like that. No one but him.
