CHAPTER 1: The Whirlwind
Iris Dashiell's legs were on fire, but she couldn't stop now. Not when she was this close. The finish line blurred in her vision as she pushed herself harder than she ever had before. The roar of the crowd in Paris's Olympic Stadium faded to white noise, and all she could hear was the rhythm of her own heartbeat.
One more hurdle.
As her feet touched down on the other side of that final obstacle, time seemed to slow. Iris leaned forward, chest first, arms back. In that moment, she wasn't Iris anymore. She was pure speed. She was "Dash."
The moment her torso broke through the finish line, reality came crashing back. The stadium erupted, and Iris fell to her knees, gasping for air. She'd done it.
Olympic fuckin’ gold.
"Ladies and gentlemen, Iris 'Dash' Dashiell has just set a new Olympic record in the 200-meter hurdles!"
Tears streamed down Iris's face as she stood, her braids coming loose from her ponytail. She looked up into the stands, searching for her family, her team. Instead, her eyes locked with Serena Williams, the tennis legend giving her a standing ovation. Iris's heart swelled. This was everything she'd ever dreamed of.
But dreams, as Iris was about to learn, have a way of shifting once you achieve them.
The next few hours passed in a blur. Interviews, drug tests, more interviews. By the time Iris finally made it back to the Olympic Village, her phone was blowing up with notifications. Congratulations from fellow athletes, messages from old friends, and, of course, her cousins asking if she could hook them up with some of that "Olympic money."
Iris groaned, tossing her phone aside. She just wanted to sleep for a week.
A knock at her door jolted her from her thoughts. "Yo, Dash! Open up, girl. We're celebrating!"
Iris recognized the voice of her teammate, Zoe. With a sigh, she hauled herself off the bed and opened the door. Zoe burst in, followed by a couple other members of Team USA.
"There's our golden girl!" Zoe whooped, pulling Iris into a hug. "Girl, you were flying out there! Even Allyson Felix was shook!"
Iris couldn't help but smile. "For real? Allyson said something?"
"Check your DMs, sis. Everyone's talking about you."
As if on cue, Iris's phone buzzed again. This time, it was her boyfriend, Marcus. "Babe, you killed it! I'm booking my flight to Paris right now. We gotta hit up some clubs, show you off!"
Iris's smile faltered. She loved Marcus, but right now, a club was the last place she wanted to be. Before she could reply, another message came through. This one from her manager, Jamila.
"Iris, darling! Fantastic job today. I've got Good Morning America and The Today Show. We're going to strike while the iron's hot. I'll send you the schedule in the morning. Rest up, superstar!"
Iris felt her chest tighten. The whirlwind was only just beginning.
"Hey, you good?" Zoe asked, noticing Iris's change in demeanor.
Iris forced a smile. "Yeah, just tired, you know? It's been a long day."
Zoe nodded, understanding in her eyes. "I feel you. We'll let you rest. But tomorrow, we celebrate for real, a'ight?"
As her friends filed out, Iris sank back onto her bed. She should be on top of the world right now. So why did she feel like she was about to be swallowed whole?
Her eyes drifted to the gold medal sitting on her nightstand. It glinted in the low light, a symbol of everything she'd worked for. But as Iris drifted off to sleep, she couldn't shake the feeling that this was just the beginning of a whole new race. One she wasn't sure she was prepared to run.
The next few days passed in a whirlwind of flashing cameras and rapid-fire questions. Iris felt like a hamster on a wheel, running from one interview to the next, her smile growing more strained with each passing hour. But just when she thought she couldn't take another minute, she found herself face-to-face with none other than Snoop Dogg, Team USA's unofficial ambassador.
"Yo, Dash!" Snoop greeted her, his signature drawl instantly putting her at ease. "Girl, you was flyin' out there! Had me thinkin' you had wings on them shoes!"
Iris couldn't help but laugh, her first genuine smile in what felt like forever. "Thanks, Uncle Snoop! I still can't believe it happened."
"Believe it, baby girl. You earned every bit of that gold. Now, let's talk about that race. Break it down for the Doggfather."
For the next fifteen minutes, Iris found herself actually enjoying an interview for the first time. Snoop's laid-back style and genuine interest in her sport made her feel like she was just chatting with an old friend. By the end, she was even teaching him her pre-race dance routine, both of them laughing as Snoop tried to keep up with her quick steps.
As the interview wrapped up, Snoop gave her a fist bump. "You keep doin' you, Dash. The world ain't ready for what you got next."
Iris held onto that feeling of joy as she was whisked away to her next appointment - a meeting with her management team. She arrived at a sleek conference room, where her manager, Jamila, was already waiting with several others.
"There's our golden girl!" Jamila exclaimed, pulling Iris into a hug that smelled of expensive perfume and ambition. "We've got big news, darling. Huge!"
Iris sank into a plush chair, bracing herself. "What's up?"
Jamila's eyes gleamed. "We've just locked down a major deal. A campaign for Pulse Athletics. It's going to run for the next three months, really capitalizing on your Olympic momentum."
"Three months?" Iris felt her chest tighten. "But I was hoping to take some time off, maybe visit my family—"
"Oh, sweetie," Jamila waved her hand dismissively, "there'll be time for that later. This is your moment!"
One of the other team members, a young man with thick-rimmed glasses, chimed in. "The best part is, you'll be working with another star athlete. It's a collaboration that's going to break the internet."
Iris perked up slightly. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad if she had a partner to share the load. "Oh yeah? Who is it?"
Jamila beamed. "Ibou Konate!"
Iris blinked. "Who?"
The room fell silent for a moment before Jamila let out a forced laugh. "Oh, Iris, you're such a kidder! Ibou Konate? The Liverpool defender?"
Iris shrugged, feeling suddenly out of her depth. "Sorry, I don't really follow soccer."
Jamila's smile tightened almost imperceptibly. "Well, darling, you're about to become very familiar with Mr. Konate. This campaign is going to be huge for both of you."
As her team launched into the details of the campaign, Iris found her mind wandering. She tuned back in just in time to hear Jamila say, "You'll meet Ibou next week for the initial photoshoot. I have a feeling you two are going to hit it off!"
Iris nodded, forcing a smile. As excited as she should be about this opportunity, she couldn't shake the feeling that she was losing control of her own life. But this was what she'd worked for, right? This was what winning gold meant.
As she left the meeting, Iris felt a headache coming on. All she wanted was to crawl into bed and sleep, but as she approached her hotel room, she could hear a familiar voice from inside.
"Yeah, yeah, that's right! Your boy is in Paris with the Olympic champion! Iris 'Dash' Dashiell, aka the fastest woman in the world, aka my girl!"
Iris closed her eyes and took a deep breath before swiping her key card. The door swung open to reveal Marcus, her boyfriend, lounging on the bed with his phone held high, broadcasting yet another Instagram Live.
"And here she is, folks! The golden girl herself!" Marcus exclaimed as Iris entered the room.
Iris forced a smile and gave a half-hearted wave to the camera. "Hey everyone," she said, her voice lacking its usual energy.
Marcus jumped up, still filming. "Babe, you won't believe all the stuff that's been arriving for you! Check it out!"
For the first time, Iris noticed the array of gifts scattered around the room. Under normal circumstances, she might have been excited, but right now it all felt overwhelming.
"And look at this!" Marcus continued, seemingly oblivious to Iris's fatigue. He gestured to a stunning bouquet of yellow and white roses. "Guess who these are from? Go on, guess!"
Iris sighed. "I don't know, Marcus. Who?"
"Beyoncé!" Marcus practically shouted into his phone. "That's right, Queen Bey herself sent flowers to my queen! How dope is that?"
As Marcus continued to catalogue the gifts for his followers, Iris sank into an armchair, her eyes fixed on Beyoncé's flowers. Any other day, she would have been over the moon. Now, she just felt numb.
"Marcus," she said quietly, but he didn't seem to hear her, too engrossed in his livestream.
"Oh, and check out these sneakers from Nike! Limited edition, not even out yet. That's how they do when you're dating a champion, you feel me?"
"Marcus," Iris said again, louder this time.
He finally looked at her, lowering his phone slightly. "What's up, babe? You good?"
Iris opened her mouth, then closed it again. What could she say? That she was exhausted? That all of this felt like too much? That she missed the days when it was just about the run, not the fame?
Instead, she forced another smile. "It's nothing. I'm just tired."
Marcus nodded, his attention already back on his phone. "No doubt, no doubt. You've been grinding hard. But hey, that's the price of greatness, right? Speaking of which, we got that club appearance tonight. It's gonna be lit!"
Iris felt her heart sink. Another appearance. Another night of smiling and waving and pretending she wasn't bone-tired.
As Marcus resumed his commentary for his followers, Iris's eyes drifted back to Beyoncé's flowers. They were beautiful, no doubt. But right now, all she could think about was how much she missed the simple beauty of the wildflowers that grew near her childhood home.
She closed her eyes, trying to recall their scent, the feel of grass under her feet as she ran through the fields. For a moment, she was back there, free and unburdened. Then Marcus's voice cut through her reverie.
"Yo, Iris! You gonna get ready? We gotta leave in an hour!"
Iris opened her eyes, the hotel room coming back into focus. The gifts, the flowers, Marcus with his ever-present phone – this was her reality now. With a heavy sigh, she pushed herself up from the chair.
"Yeah," she said, heading towards the bathroom. "I'll be ready."
As she closed the bathroom door behind her, shutting out Marcus's voice and the glare of his camera, Iris caught her reflection in the mirror. The face that looked back at her was one she barely recognized – the face of a champion, they all said. But right now, she'd give anything to just be Iris again.
With another deep breath, she turned on the shower. Time to get ready for another night in the spotlight.
The studio buzzed with activity as Iris walked in, her steps heavy with exhaustion. She'd barely slept in the last week, thanks to Marcus's insistence on hitting every hot spot in Paris, not to mention the endless amount of interviews and press junkets. As she approached the set, her eyes landed on a tall, striking figure chatting animatedly with the crew.
That had to be Ibou Konate.
Damn, he's tall, Iris thought, her neck craning as she took him in. At 6'4", Ibou was a whole entire tree, making her feel like a shrub in comparison.
As if sensing her gaze, he turned, and Iris felt her breath catch slightly. Ibou was undeniably handsome, with rich brown skin and a dazzling smile that seemed to light up the room. His hair was cut short on the sides, with tight, well-maintained waves on top. A neatly trimmed goatee framed his full lips, giving him a look that was both rugged and refined.
"Ah, you must be Iris!" he called out, his French accent rolling pleasantly over the words. He strode towards her, hand extended. "I'm Ibou. It's a pleasure to meet you."
Iris shook his hand, noting the warmth of his grip. "Hi," she replied, her tone cooler than she intended. She was just so tired.
If Ibou noticed her less-than-enthusiastic response, he didn't show it. Instead, he grinned even wider. "I heard about your races. You were like lightning out there."
Before Iris could respond, a peppy woman with a clipboard bustled up to them. "Great, you're both here! I'm Ana, your social media manager for this campaign. Let's get you two briefed!"
She ushered them to a quiet corner of the studio. "So, here's the concept: 'Dare or Double Dare.' Over the next three months, you'll be challenging each other to various dares - could be eating weird foods, pulling pranks, doing crazy exercises, you name it! We'll capture it all for social media, of course."
Ibou's eyes lit up. "Sounds fun! I'm always up for a good prank."
Iris, however, felt her heart sink. Three more months of this circus? "And this goes on after the Olympics?" she asked, trying to keep the dread out of her voice.
Ana nodded enthusiastically. "Yep! Right through to the middle of Ibou's season. It's going to be epic!"
As Ana continued explaining the details, Iris felt her attention wandering. She was vaguely aware of Ibou cracking jokes, his laughter infectious enough that even in her exhausted state, she found the corners of her mouth twitching upward.
Suddenly, a commotion near the entrance caught her attention. Marcus had arrived, and he did not look happy.
"Yo, who's this dude?" he demanded, eyeing Ibou like he was sizing up competition.
Iris sighed. "Marcus, this is Ibou. He's my partner for the campaign. Ibou, this is my boyfriend, Marcus."
Ibou, ever pleasant, extended his hand. "Nice to meet you, man."
Marcus wasn't having it. He ignored Ibou's hand, his eyes narrowing as he clocked how Ibou was looking at Iris. And yeah, maybe there was a hint of something more than professional courtesy in that look, but right now, Iris couldn't bring herself to care.
"Marcus, chill," Iris hissed, embarrassment coloring her cheeks.
But Marcus was on a roll. "Nah, I see how he's looking at you. I'm just supposed to be cool with that?"
Iris felt something snap inside her. Maybe it was the lack of sleep, or the pressure, or just the way Ibou towered over Marcus's 5'10" frame, making her boyfriend look like he was picking a fight with a redwood. Whatever it was, she'd had enough.
"You know what? Just... just head out, Marcus. Please."
"Are you serious right now?" Marcus's voice rose, drawing stares from the crew.
"As a heart attack. Go."
For a hot second, it looked like Marcus might pop off. But then he turned and stormed out, muttering curses under his breath.
What the fuck is he on today? Iris turned back to find Ibou and Ana staring at her, concern evident on their faces. "I'm sorry about that," she said, feeling suddenly drained. "Let's just... let's get this shoot started, okay?"
The next hour passed in a blur of poses and outfit changes. Iris tried to focus, to summon the energy and charisma that had become her trademark. But as the bright lights beat down on her, she felt herself growing dizzy.
The room started to spin. She heard Ibou's voice, sounding worried: "Iris? Are you alright?"
And then the world went black.
When Iris came to, she found herself cradled in strong arms. She blinked, her vision clearing to reveal Ibou's concerned face looking down at her.
"There you are," he said softly. "You scared the shit out of us."
Iris tried to sit up, but Ibou gently held her in place. "Easy now. The medic's on his way. You fainted - probably from exhaustion and dehydration."
Feeling embarrassed and vulnerable, Iris closed her eyes again. "I'm sorry," she murmured.
"Non, non, don’t apologize," Ibou insisted. His voice was soothing, almost melodic. "Tell me, what do you like to do to calm down? To relax?"
Iris found herself answering without really thinking. "I... I like to take walks in the wildflower fields on my parents' property in Virginia. They own a horse ranch."
"That sounds beautiful," Ibou said, and she could hear the smile in his voice. "I'd love to see that someday."
Did he just…? Nah, he’s probably just being nice. "Yeah," Iris continued, surprised at how easy it was to talk to him. "And when I can't do that, I watch anime. Jujutsu Kaisen is my favorite right now."
Ibou's face lit up. "No way! I love anime too! Have you seen the latest season?"
For the first time in what felt like forever, Iris felt herself genuinely smiling. "Not yet. I've been so busy with training and..."
"Say no more," Ibou grinned. "We'll have to watch it together sometime."
As the medic arrived and helped Iris to her feet, she became acutely aware of Ibou's hand still resting on her waist, steady and warm. It felt like a lifeline, grounding her as the world slowly stopped spinning. Suddenly, as if realizing what he was doing, Ibou dropped his hand, muttering a soft "sorry" under his breath.
The medic led her to a nearby chair, quickly setting up an IV drip packed with vitamins and fluids. As the cool liquid began to flow into her veins, Iris felt some of her exhaustion start to ebb away.
"Are you okay to continue?" the photographer asked, concern etched on his face.
Iris nodded, mustering up a weak smile. "Yeah, I can finish."
The photographer shook his head. "Let's take an early lunch break. Give you time to recover properly."
As the crew dispersed, Iris leaned back in her chair, closing her eyes. The medic stayed nearby, monitoring her progress. After what felt like both an eternity and no time at all, he unhooked the IV, pressing a colorful lollipop into her hand with a wink. "For being a good patient," he said with a grin.
Iris couldn't help but chuckle as she unwrapped the dum-dum. Who said being an adult wasn't fun?
Once she felt steady enough, Iris made her way to the lunch area, grabbing her phone from her bag before stepping outside. The photoshoot location was a dream - a picturesque Parisian garden not far from the Eiffel Tower. Lush greenery surrounded her, dotted with vibrant flowers that seemed to dance in the gentle breeze. In the distance, the Iron Lady herself stood proud against the clear blue sky.
Her phone buzzed, shattering the peaceful moment. A text from Marcus flashed across the screen, his anger about Ibou evident even through the digital medium. Iris rolled her eyes, a sigh escaping her lips.
Marcus had been... different lately. The clout-chasing, the bouts of jealousy - it wasn't like the Marcus she'd known back home. But she tried not to dwell on it too much. It was probably just the stress of sudden fame, right? Nothing to worry about.
"Beautiful view, huh?"
Ibou's voice from behind her made Iris jump slightly. She turned to find him standing there, two plates of food in his hands. He offered one to her with a smile.
"Thanks," she said, taking the plate. "And yeah, it's gorgeous here."
They stood in comfortable silence for a moment, taking in the scenery as they ate. Then Ibou spoke up again.
"So... have you seen the One Piece live-action on Netflix?"
Iris shook her head. "Not yet. Is it good?"
Ibou shrugged. "It's alright. I'm not a huge fan, to be honest, but it's decent. The anime is better, of course."
They fell into an easy conversation about anime, debating the merits of various shows.
"Oh," Ibou said suddenly, "about watching the new season of JJK together... maybe we could do a watch party?"
"That could be fun," Iris agreed.
"Great! I'll set it up. Can I get your number? To coordinate, you know."
Iris cocked her head to the side, a small smirk playing on her lips. "I have a boyfriend, remember?"
Ibou’s expression was all innocence. "Yeah, I know. But does that mean you're not allowed to have friends?"
Iris considered for a moment. He had a point, and besides, they'd be working together for the next couple of months anyway. What harm could it do?
With a shrug, she rattled off her number, which Ibou quickly punched into his phone. "Cool," he said, flashing that megawatt smile. "I'll text you so you have mine too."
As they headed back inside to resume the shoot, Iris felt lighter than she had in weeks. Maybe this campaign wouldn't be so bad after all. And hey, it never hurt to have another friend, right?

Other Notes
+ Che’nya’s full name is rendered differently between the EN and JP versions. + Leona's family's royal chamberlain, Kifaji, had his name changed to "Neji" in the localization. The reason for this is unclear. (Kifaji means "food" in Swahili, which makes sense if you consider Scar and Zazu's relationship.) + Fellow Honest's name was changed to "Ernesto Foulworth" in the localization to better reflect Honest John's real name. + Gidel's name was changed to "Gino".

I got the physical copy of sxsgens a day early but i already have the game on PC anyways also but im not showing spoilers cuz the book pages are in the game. The book is SUPER small! For reference, a fumo is 20cm. Also i wrote a silly story about how they got the book!
Merry smashes a mirror that the Moon reflected on and entered into one of the mirror’s shards with Renko as she closes her eyes. It led the Hifuu Club to another world like the Animal Realm! Unlike the beasts in Gensokyo, the lunar rabbits on the Moon and the beasts of the Animal Realm, humans and beasts in this world lived together, and beasts never had a need to gather the fears from humans. They realized it was a brane world, or a universe, parallel to the universe the Hifuu Club and the fantastical pocket worlds inside that they have traveled to are a part of.
They found an abandoned robot factory of a cruel and terrible magician who caused many incidents and even once ruled the world. He loved robots and pollution but hated nature, beasts and animals. They took a couple of books from a computer room. When they did, they were chased by a spirit who they thought was constructed by the robot magician based on a desktop avatar. They tried to run away from the spirit until they found a conveniently placed gap in front of them that led back to their world!
also note: there's a new hifuu album that's based on tanabata, merry is the extraordinary cosmoweaver princess depicted as falling/vega like a falling eagle and renko is the ordinary ox farmer and she's flying like the flying eagle/altair

JULY 2024 WRAP UP
Overall this was a very good month, so rather than italicizing everything I decided to note my favorites :)
[loved liked ok nope bookclub* (reread)]
Come Tumbling Down • Fly Trap • In an Absent Dream • The Orchard • (Beneath the Sugar Sky) • Vanishing Monuments* • Fly by Night • What Feasts at Night • The Woman in White • (Down Among the Sticks and Bones) • A Grave Robbery • (Every Heart a Doorway) • Dandelion Fire
* * * * *
Dandelion Fire (4 stars) - book 2 of the 100 Cupboards series. Not much to say, honestly - it's an interesting story, but the writing doesn't always give it the life it needs and drags sometimes. A solidly serviceable mid-tier middle grade fantasy that hasn't aged too poorly.
Every Heart A Doorway/Down Among the Sticks and Bones/Beneath the Sugar Sky/In an Absent Dream (4 stars) - I've been meaning to catch up on this series forever (I only read the first 3 books? really?), and luckily I can count at least 5 of them towards my physical tbr goals, so here we go! I don't think they shine quite as bright as they did in my memory, but honestly I don't think I've tried any Seanan McGuire that I didn't enjoy reading. In An Absent Dream is the earliest one I hadn't yet read, and it was ok - seeing individual character's stories is proving interesting, but there's something about the ensemble novellas that I think just hook me more.
A Grave Robbery (4.5 stars) - what can I say, it was fun! I'm coming to realize that this series is pulling plots from a very specific type of sensational classic novel that I don't know enough about to name, but I very much want to read some of them.
The Woman In White (4 stars) - my second Wilkie Collins! If I could rate this based ONLY on the portion narrated by Marion this would be my new favorite book, 5 stars, no notes. Unfortunately we do have Walter, blandly nice and polite and heroic Walter, narrating most of the book, and he is SO boring, and I hate that his role as a love interest is supposed to be this great moving thing? I'm glad the book skipped most of the "romance" actually, but ultimately I was extremely uncomfortable with the circumstances under which he and Laura eventually marry (did I also kind of want him and Marion to get married instead? Maybe). Also extremely disappointed in how Laura and Anne were both completely sidelined in a story that is ultimately theirs (if anyone knows of a retelling that improves on things let me know!!). The highs were high and the lows were low, but overall I did enjoy reading this. Now to figure out what Wilkie Collins to read next now that I've read the two I'd heard of.
What Feasts at Night (4 stars) - I didn't reread the first book so I can't really compare them, but I liked it! A good spooky time that I did partially listen to while walking through the woods, which was maybe not my brightest idea haha.
Fly by Night/Fly Trap (4.5/5 stars) - FANTASTIC. I've discovered that there's a specific blend of things that I look for in middle-grade books these days (as an adult), and these completely nailed it - characters (not just kids!) who are flawed and selfish and petty but capable of kindness or doing the right thing, and writing that is not only smart and intelligent but funny! There are (maybe) too many layers going on in Fly by Night, but I still really enjoyed it (and Mosca's attack goose), and I think where Fly Trap really pulls ahead is that it has all of the introductory spiel out of the way and the story is allowed to be much more focused. Did we really need a second book? No, but I'm glad we have it and would be happy to read more!
Vanishing Monuments (4 stars) - This month's read for book club, by the author of previous favorite, My Volcano! It felt deeply personal, intimate, dark, and harder to process all the intense emotions, but still showed as much depth of craftsmanship and artistry in its writing. I didn’t love it as much, but I hope someday I’ll feel smart enough to understand it more. cw for unreality, mental illness, and all kinds of gender stuff.
The Orchard (4 stars) - this the (unfinished!) memoir of a young woman who tried to single-handedly run her family's orchard during the Great Depression, and the events that lead to the manuscript's publishing are nearly as interesting! I didn't leave myself notes, so I'd say positive feelings, but I'm learning I don't really like memoirs the hard way (I'm always a sucker for tough women doing the hard things though).

Hellfire's Mama fox Chap. 8; Roxxi's secret is told
*Author's note*
86' was Eddie Munson's year and 2024 is Joseph Quinn's year from getting his casting as Johnny storm in the upcoming Fantastic 4 movie, to a Quite Place day one and Gladiator 2 coming later this year. So happy for our beloved brit :) And in honor of his rising success, I'd like to say that this story is back in business with two chapters ready to be read. Hope you enjoy this update and thanks for being patient for those that read this story. Hopefully I'll be done with the events of s.4 by the time the final season comes out that way I can plan accordingly how I want this story to go. But until that day comes, enjoy these next two chapters.

_______________________________________________________
Halloween came and went followed by the Thanksgiving holiday break. And thanks to a special bonus that Wayne was given, the Munsons were able to afford a fairly good sized turkey this year after not having it since our sophomore year.
And I knew Eddie was excited cause with Thanksgiving now passed, Christmas was around the corner and that meant a longer break from Hawkin’s high. And it was also the start of my next upcoming holiday oneshot. Now typically I try to only do one big holiday oneshot either for Halloween or Christmas but ever since being away and getting my head cleared, I was able to pull out two epic oneshot campaigns for this year’s Hellfire club.
But I also knew what was coming up for Hawkin’s high. Like I had told Lauren all the way at the start of the year, it was also the time of the Hawkins gymnastics tryouts. After the final bell rang, I headed down towards the gym where I saw the assistant coach setting up the mats for the tryouts.
I hid behind my copy of ‘To kill a Mockingbird’ novel for English class when I saw a group of girls heading towards the gym with their bags and saw them walk inside. More and more girls, including Lauren walked passed me until the final dismissal bell rang and I watched them all tryout.
Watching the girls practice their audition routine either on the balance beam or the monkey bars, brought back so many memories. Like I said even though I hated the sexism aspect of the sport, the pressure my parents put on me as well as the entire community, there’s nothing that made me feel freer than being going out into that ring and performing my dance. Gymnastics is the sport that makes Man feel what it’s like to fly.
I kept watching the entire audition from behind the gym door and was amazed at some of the talent from some of the girls. Had I still been Captain, I’d be putting most of them on the team because they truly showed promise in taking the school to State Champion.
When auditions ended 2 hours later, I quickly hid behind my book once again and watched as the girls came out talking about either how well or bad they did before the coach and the current Captain Abigail Breslin. Once everyone had left, I looked around before entering inside the gym.
The smell of the chalk still lingered in the air. I walked to the center of gym and set my bag down before doing a couple of stretches. Doing some split stretches, jumping jacks, and various leg stretches. My muscles maybe tense from lack of use but I knew that muscle memory was still in there.
Once I was warmed up, I did a few cartwheels across the gym floor before eyeing the spring board just yards away from me standing before a beam. I charged in hot before hoping onto the springboard and successfully flipped over the mat nailing a perfect handspring.
Raising my hands up in the air to stick the pose I could almost hear the cheers of the crowd as I now gracefully ‘skated’ across the mat. I then prepared for my next move. I took a few steps before doing two aerials before ending it with a handstand.
My arms shook as I tried to keep balance and I nearly felt myself fall over but I kept a firm grip by keeping my palms as flat as possible and my back as straight as I could. Ever so slowly I lowered my right leg in front of me forming an L shape with my legs.
The lack of me using this much flexibility (at least not to the degree I use with Eddie) really was putting a strain in my body but I fought through the pain as I held the pose before flipping back up right. As I kept hearing the applause, I then quickly raised and grabbed my left ankle before raising it all the way behind my head and I heard the applause grow louder. I smiled before setting my leg down and held my arms outward in a T pose ending my warm up routine.
I could almost hear the crowd cheering my name and feel the spotlight shining down on me.
“Roxxi?” I snapped out of my daydream state and turned to see Dustin, Mike and Lucas all looking at me shocked and in awe.
“Oh…” I brushed my hair out of my face with my fingers as I said, “I didn’t expect to see you boys here so late.”
“We had to finish up a lab for Mr. Pollock’s class when Mike realized he had also left his math book here.” Dustin said.
“I see.” I cleared my throat.
“Roxxi. Are you…..were you really doing all those flips and leg raises?” Mike asked flabbergasted, his mouth refusing to close. If Eddie were here, he’d have smacked Mike silly for gawking at me the way he was.
“How much of that did you boys see?” I asked.
“We heard the sound of a springboard and the slamming of feet so—right about since then.” Said Lucas. Oh so they saw pretty much the whole routine. “We didn’t mean to spy Roxxi. But were you trying to secretly audition for the gymnastics team but chickened out?”
“Lucas!” hissed Dustin as he smacked him in the ribs.
“What?”
“It’s fine Dustin.” I assured him. I let out a deep sigh, “Guess there’s a lot I still need to tell you boys. Follow me.” I grabbed my bookbag and left the gym with the boys trailing behind me.
I lead them down to the basement to where I knew the school kept archives of all the past Seasonal trophies for every sport and school activity known to Hawkin’s High. I took out my bobby pin and picked at the lock.
“Since when did you learn to pick locks?” asked Mike.
“When your boyfriend is Eddie Munson, you learn a thing or two. Mostly from when he forgets to grab the keys to the trailer.” After a few turns, I got the door unlocked and flipped on the light bulb to reveal all the stored boxes for the certificates and old shelf casings for the big trophies.
“What exactly are we doing down here Roxxi?” asked Lucas.
“Head over to the third case over there and look at the middle shelf.” I told them. They walked past the shelves of trophies that came from the 70’s school year before finally reaching the 1980’s trophy shelf.
I knew then and there along with the debate team’s trophies and the swim teams, they’d also find the gymnastics trophies as well as all the newspaper articles in how I founded the entire gymnastics team and help them win their first ever State championship.
“You were a gymnast?!” the three freshmen exclaimed.
“Yep. Bred into it since I was two years old.”
“And you were the captain of gymnastics team?” asked Lucas.
“Not just captain. I was the founder of it. You see there never was a gymnastics team in the history of this school. So in order to keep up with my ‘gymnast physic’ as my parents forced upon me, I was forced to join the cheerleading team during my years at the middle school. But I couldn’t stand being a cheerleader. All the fake preppy smiles and corny cheers. Ugh it drove me nuts.” I shuddered. “So when I got into high school, I had somehow managed to convince Principal Higgins to fund and start the Hawkins High gymnastics team.”
“Wait, I remember. Yeah a long time ago you actually made the front page news on your first win for the school. You were that (Y/n) Hemingway.” Dustin exclaimed.
“I was. Once.” I said solemnly. “My skills on the ring were the envy and admiration of all. The people of Hawkins called me the ‘Queen of the Skies’. Oh you boys should’ve seen me at the peak of my prime. I once kicked a three time gold medalist right down to a bronze.”
“So wait, if you were some hotshot athlete, what made you give it up? Clearly you still love it judging from what we saw back there. Why’d you quit?” asked Mike. I fiddled with my bracelet that actually had a date on it, a date that I wish to forget but will and shall never, ever forget. And neither would Eddie.
“You remember how I’ve said to never try and break the bonds you three share? That if they’re gone, no one will be there for you.” They nodded. “Well….I got sick my first senior year. Very, very sick. And even though people could see me deteriorating both physically and mentally, all they kept asking me was when would I get back out onto the ring. Then when I finally got the strength to tell them all I’d never go back out there…..they turned on me. Save for one.”
Their looks of sympathy made my stomach churn uncomfortably. This is why I don’t like talking about my past because of sympathetic looks like these boys were giving me. I took a sharp breath of air before coming towards them.
“Now, we best be off. Wouldn’t want the janitors busting us for being down here. Since this is technically breaking and entering. Guess Eddie rubs off on me in both good and bad ways. But I don’t want you boys following too much into our leagues, understand?”
“Yeah, sure Roxxi.” They chorused out.
“Good, now I think the Home Ec. dept. still has those chocolate chip cookies from the cookie cart earlier this afternoon. Let’s go indulge in a few of them.” That soon got their minds off my story as they started talking about the joys that is the Cookie cart (a thing that isn’t known in the Middle School).
Later that night, I was in Eddie’s bed finishing up the last few questions from our English assignment when I felt Eddie slip behind me and press his chest to my back. I felt him kiss my cheek as he asked me.
“How’s the homework coming along babe?”
“Alright. English already being my top subject this is a cake walk. How’s yours coming, and don’t say you’re just gonna copy my answers in the morning.” He gasped as he covered his mouth dramatically.
“Why my beloved Roxxi I would never…..” I gave him the look and raised my brow at him. “Okay yeah I would have BUT that’s all in the past. Though I will need help with a few questions come morning.” He soon said sheepishly. I shook my head at him before kissing his cheek.
“And such honesty rewards you with my aid after breakfast.”
“This is why I love you.” He kissed the corner of my lips before starting to get ready for bed. Removing his jeans and taking off his shirt. I packed my stuff back into my backpack and said.
“I told them Eddie.” He hummed as he was halfway of taking off his shirt. “Mike, Lucas and Dustin. They—caught me in the gym after the gymnastics tryouts. And I showed them the trophy room down in the archives.” He went still as he looked at me with those chocolate brown eyes of his.
“Did….you tell them about—”
“You know I can’t ever get that far as to talk about that. But….they know about who I was. (Y/n) Hemingway, future Olympic gymnast.” Eddie came back over to me and pressed his forehead to mine.
“You sure you don’t regret staying with me?”
“Eddie,” I cupped his face in my hands. “You were the only one who stayed at my side after…..the incident. All I was to everyone else in Hawkins was either the Satanic whore or the Washup gymnast. You were the only one who still saw me as me. Maybe even more.”
“I’ve always seen you as more Roxx.” He said as he stroked my cheek. “You’ve always been my girl, my One. And I’m afraid you’re stuck with me till the end.”
“I wouldn’t have it any other way Eddie-bear.” He smiled before cupping under my jaw and bringing me into a soft, loving kiss. I wrapped my arms around his neck as our kiss deepened and I felt myself lay on top of his chest while he rested against the bed. After we separated, I placed my head over his heart as I felt his fingers stroke along my back while his hand pet down my hair.
“And just so you know, even though it’s hard for me to talk about it too. I just want you to know that……if you ever do wish to talk about it. You know I’ll be there to listen, right?”
“Thank you Eddie.” I softly hummed as I felt him kiss my temple before I drifted off to sleep to the sound of his heartbeat and his loving touch.

‘David Fincher: Interviews’ Edited by Laurence F. Knapp book highlights!!
I just finished this book and it was SOOO fucking interesting, here are some of my favourite quotes from it :))
-"Because of the horrible Aliens thing, every time I hear the name Fox, it just makes me shrivel. I lose circulation in my hands and feet and I think I'm going to become a quadruple amputee.”
-"I never thought it was scary at all. I turned to the editor and said, 'My God, what have we done? We've totally let people down in the fucking terror department; we need to go shoot some dismembered bodies. Go and see if you can get someone from a morgue and chop 'em up. "
-"Right up to when we finished, I just didn't think it was violent enough. I was like, We've got a movie called Fight Club, we might as well call it Glee Club?”
-"There was absolutely nothing fun about making the movie." He gives the matter a little more thought. "Nope," he finally decides. "Nothing."
-DRE: Is Jared Leto tired of getting the crap beaten out of him in your movies? DF: He's perfect for it, isn't he? If there is any guy you want to see get his face burned off it's him.
- So now I have kids in my daughter's school who go: "Man, I love Fight Club," and you go: "Why are your parents letting you watch that? Don't come near my kid."
-I remember being a little bit, 'Uh-oh’ And Brad's drunk and Edward's drunk and Helena's drunk and they're all like, ‘It's great and we love it' and I'm like, That's fantastic. You did notice that there were six hundred other people there who walked out ready to lynch us?'"
-You know, it's like accountants and lawyers all love The Game, and college students and perverts all like Se7en.
- Empire: You've been developing Heavy Metal and Torso, among other projects. Any idea what you're doing next? Fincher: I'm sleeping for six months! I think I'm whoring myself out to come to fly around Europe and defend my honor, but I don't honestly know.
-Look, people come up to me and say, "You started torture porn." And I say, "Fuck you."
- "So it's about fighting." And they went out and sold ads for this movie on World Wrestling Federation. [audience laughs] I said, "You know, the crowd who go to the WWF are going to be made a little uncomfortable. Certainly the opening weekend, they're going to be like, 'Dude, that was gay."
-"aside from being completely unusable, it's fantastic!" They are close to wrapping the final Swedish stint of the production before flying back to LA, where they'll take the weekend off before the last week of shooting. "That gives me two days of uncontrollable weeping," says Fincher.
-"There's a quote from a film critic that David had enlarged, framed, and hung in his conference room," says Social Network writer Aaron Sorkin. "It calls Fight Club 'amoral and Godless.' I think he'd rather have that quote than a Palme d'Or."
other random things:
- Fincher came up with “ikea boy”
- Brad Pitt riding a segway around Fincher’s office and trying to convince him to join him. this was in an interview for benjamin button, and then years later in an interview for ‘the girl with the dragon tattoo’ the interviewer says there is a segway in Fincher’s office, in this article, he is also described as a ‘Segway-riding gearhead’.
- if i took a shot every time Fincher or Ed Norton compared ‘fight club’ to ‘the graduate’, i would be dead from alcohol poisoning
- my favourite interview was ‘Forget the First Two Rules of Fight Club’ by Nev Pierce for ‘Total Film’, it was so funny and well written and interviews Fincher, Norton, Pitt and HBC. i think you can find a preview of it online but PLEASE read it if you like fight club because is so fucking good!!!
#long post#fincher can never make up his mind on whether fight club is gay or not#also what is with him and segways?#this only goes up to 2012 btw#david fincher#fight club#fight club 1999#se7en#se7en 1995#the girl with the dragon tattoo#david fincher quotes

3 Ships: The Maine, The Lusitania, and hmm... how about The Arizona? (You are right, this is way more fun than fandom ships)
First Ever Ship: I grew up on a beach, this is impossible. Maybe The Pirate’s Ransom, which is a pirate themed tour boat in the area, mainly for kids? More likely a family friend's fishing boat, but I honestly have no idea.
Last song: Fly Me To The Moon (Frank Sinatra version)
Last movie: actually, I went to a screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show just before Halloween and haven't had a chance to see a movie since.
Currently reading: A Haunting on the Hill by Elizabeth Hand. It's a sort of a sequel to The Haunting of Hill House and it's pretty good so far.
Also the following tumblr book clubs: Moby Dick (fantastic, everyone should read it), The Woman in White (very good), The Divine Comedy (difficult but good), A Journey to the West (only the first chapter, but it's beautiful so far)
Currently watching: still need to get around to the last episode of Our Flag Means Death (oh, shoot, could have gone with the Revenge, Queen Anne's Revenge, and the Royal James for my three ships. Eh, I'll stick with ships that sank just before the US declared war)
Currently consuming: hot tea, chamomile specifically
Currently craving: the flow of creative juices to resume; I have writing to do
And now who to tag? @sharpbutsoft @babeluda and @flowercrowngods and anyone else who wishes to join in, of course.

Quarter reads 2023
At the beginning of the year, I posted on facebook for book recommendations to read over the new year and had multiple friends comment with recommendations. So I’m reading books this year that I might not have otherwise.
January – The Beggar King and the Secret of Happiness by Joel Ben Izzy. FB recommendation. I was really hesitant to read this book, as it sounded very much like “all things happen for a reason” and “God has a purpose for all suffering” which is one of the things that I left behind even before leaving my religion. I’m glad I read it, as it’s been one of my favorites of the year. Beautiful interweaving of story-telling and grief. – The Bird King by G. Willow Wilson. Friend recommendation. A story of a time in history that I knew little of (the last sultan in the Iberian peninsula). It started out so good – the first 3rd was fantastic, the second 3rd was mediocre, and the last 3rd painful. So disappointing. – The White Allies Handbook: 4 Weeks to Join the Racial Justice Fight for Black Women by Lecia Michelle. A finish up from last year. I was really hoping for an anti-racism 201 type book and this was not it. Still some good points. – Flying Solo by Linda Holmes. I saw this on a friend’s end of year list and thought it sounded good (plus I really love Linda Holmes’s writing for NPR). For being written by a happily single woman, there was a lot of emphasis placed on dating relationships. – Vita Nostra by Marina and Sergey Dyachenko. Friend recommendation. I have never read a book like this. Creepy and mind blowing in a philosophical way. It’s so very Russian (or rather Ukranian) and the whole thing felt foreign. I’m on the waiting list for the sequel. – Scales and Sensibility by Stephanie Burgis. Jane Austen meets pet dragons. Recommended in one of my fantasy groups as cozy fantasy. – A Charmed Christmas by Alison Cochrun. A short-story epilogue to The Charmed Offensive. I could have done without it. – Woman on Fire by Lisa Barr. Started reading this in November of 2022 for a book club that I couldn’t attend, so it kept getting bumped. It was a good thriller, but I didn’t buy the antagonist’s motivations. – Twitter Crush: A Gen-X Medical Romance by Em S A’Cor. I got this as an ARC from a physician writing group I’m part of. The writing was fine. There were several subplots that I had issues with, including the guy getting black out drunk on their first date, a “shrill” ex-wife, and a “romance” between the vixen chief fellow and the chair department, which was gross and lecherous and blamed entirely on the fellow. And while I really do appreciate writing from one’s own experiences, descriptions of vaginal dryness from menopause and impotence from antidepressants do not fit well with a romance novel. – I Kissed Shara Wheeler by Casey McQuiston. Much better than One Last Stop. – The Return of the King by J.R.R. Tolkien, read by Andy Serkis. I’ve read the LOTR trilogy countless times – but I will admit to being guilty to skimming over Books 3 and 5 and getting to Sam and Frodo climb to Mount Doom. So there was a part in the beginning of Book 5 that I had to listen to twice because I’m pretty sure I’ve never registered it before. Anyway, Andy’s voice was amazing as always and I almost want to listen to the whole thing again. (He’s recording the Silmarillion right now, so maybe I’ll be finally about to get through that book). – And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. My first Christie. It was a good murder mystery and I hadn’t quite figured it out by the end. – All Systems Red by Martha Wells. An enjoyable read, although I think I need to read the rest of the series in order to properly judge it. – They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera. Pretty much as it advertises on the tin. The premise gave me anxiety.
February – Moloka’i by Alan Brennert. Friend recommendation. Read this on my way back from a vacation in Hawai’i. Lovely story of perseverance and a good picture into old Hawaiian culture and the perfect cap to a wonderful vacation. – Healer and Witch by Nancy Werlin. A young healer tries to find a teach while navigating investigations by the Inquisition. Reminded me of T Kingfisher’s A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking. Not fond of romances between 15 and 24 year olds though. -* Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett. Loved this one. Emily’s a professor in the study of fairies exploring a small village trying to figure out their secrets and she can’t get along with the villagers and her too charming colleague sweeps in. I can’t wait for the sequel. – I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy. Audiobook. Friend recommendation. This one has been circulating my social groups because she was raised Mormon. That ended up making up very little of her memoir, rather it was more focused on her eating disorder and her relationship with her mom. It was an abrupt ending though and felt incomplete. An easy listen – each chapter was ~ 2-5 minutes. – Ejaculate Responsibly: A Whole New Way to Think About Abortion by Gabrielle Stanley Blair. Like everyone else, I was completely taken by her viral twitter thread about how men bear all of the responsibility of unwanted pregnancies. This was a meatier exploration and well worth the read.
March -* Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner. Book club read. A beautiful book exploring mother-daughter relationships, grief, and culture. One of my favorites that I’ve read so far this year. – Tomorrow Sex Will Be Good Again: Women and Desire in the Age of Consent by Katharine Angel. Book club read. It’s been a while since I read a book where “feminism” was flung around like a dirty word (and yet, I think if you asked the author, she would tell you that she’s a feminist). The last part, exploring vulnerability, was great, but there was absolutely no discussion about how it was as unrealistic in sex as consent culture, which she chided for pages. – Autoboyography by Christina Lauren. Friend recommendation. Two boys fall in love in a high school in Provo, UT – the setting was so perfectly Provo that I was transported back there, but there were inconsistencies in the depiction of Mormonism that I’m pretty sure other fans wouldn’t have picked up on. – Fairy Tale by Stephen King. Friend recommendation. Also my first King book read. There was so much that I loved about it – the world setting was fantastic. It started to drag and become formulaic towards the middle end. I did nearly throw the book in disgust at the ending, because we couldn’t possibly have a 17 year old boy go back to the Real World without losing his virginity to a random character he never interacted with, right? Bah. – This Here Flesh: Spirituality, Liberation, and the Stories That Make Us by Cole Arthur Riley. Friend recommendation. I’m not sure that I am the right audience for this book as I no longer see myself as Christian or really believe in God or Christ at all anything, but, the storytelling was gorgeous and poetic, and some parts resonated deeply. It certainly is a brand of Christianity that I wish more would get behind. – The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna. Very much enjoyed this story. Had a lot of the same charm as The House in the Cerulean Sea. – The Gravity of Us by Phil Stamper. I was expecting a weightier book, something like The Darkness Outside Us. It was okay for what it was. – The Queer Principles of Kit Webb by Cat Sebastian. I walked into the book thinking it was a sapphic romance – nope! A fun little gay highwayman romantic romp, but was left a little unfinished. – The Perfect Crimes of Marian Hayes by Cat Sebastian. The sequel to above. The questions were mostly answered here and it was a good conclusion to the series. – The Mimicking of Known Successes by Malka Older. A friend and I tried out the “Buddy Read” function on StoryGraph for this and it was like a virtual book club where we could make comment and respond to each other. The mystery sort of fell apart for me, but it was an enjoyable novella.
Currently reading: – The Ten Thousand Doors of January. Picked this one up in January and just haven’t gotten into it. – Sister Outsider by Audre Lorde. I’ve realized that I’ve read very little in terms of classic feminist works. It’s just a slog for me to get through nonfiction works. – Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clark (audiobook). I started to read JS shortly after it was published but I didn’t get more than half way through before it was due back to the library. It’s a slooooooow going book. Over 32 hours. It’ll be my commute book for the next 2 months at least. – A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki. Book club read
Other friend recommendations for the year: The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield The School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan What My Bones Knew: A Memoir of Healing from Complex Trauma by Stephanie Foo Frogs in A Pot by K.D. Kinz (written by a nurse I used to work with.) Scythe by Neal Shusterman Kaikeyi by Vaishnavi Patel Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zavin Anxious People by Fredrik Backman The Emperor’s Soul by Brandon Sanderson Sweet Like Jasmine by Bonnie Gray Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelk (What would you all recommend? I’d like to round it out to 24 books).
Books picked up from the library: Glitterland by Alexis Hall, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green, The Rose That Grew From Concrete: a collection of poetry by Tupac Shakur.

3 and 11 for book asks please!
hi zoe, ty for the ask!
3. What were your top five books of the year?
it's kind of impossible for me to list definitive favorites because i read a lot of fantastic books this year but in no particular order: (and only including fiction, i read plenty of good nonfiction this year too but i don't have time for that!)
Amatka by Karin Tidbeck (so deliciously weird and surprising... i went into this book knowing next to nothing about it and you should too)
Borne by Jeff Vandermeer (one of my first reads of the year and one of the best. it has a giant flying bear!)
The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy (what is there to say really... undoubtedly a classic, so sad and beautiful and funny and really intricately put together)
Paul Takes the Form of a Mortal Girl by Andrea Lawlor (i finished this fairly recently and i'm still totally blown away. i'd had it recommended as Necessary LGBT Reading and as silly as those labels can be it lived up to my expectations and more)
Beloved by Toni Morrison (another classic that i finally read. just a really absolutely brilliant book... i wish i had been able to read it in a class or book club there's just so much to talk about)
11. What was your favorite book that has been out for a while, but you just now read?
a lot of things on the list above and also just a lot of what i read this year falls under that description, but i'll also mention If Beale Street Could Talk by James Baldwin! i'm very glad i finally read it

The Island of Sea Women - Review
Overall Rating: 4.8/5 melons 🍈🍈🍈🍈!!! It really was such an enjoyable book, but it did hurt my heart. The next book is This Blood that Binds Us by S.L. Cokeley!
Story Concept: This was a book recommended to me by my mother-in-law. She read it with her book club and enjoyed it so I bought it for myself! The concept sounds really cool, and it's even cooler considering it is a historical fiction novel. I am also a sucker for Asian stories as an Asian woman myself. The story concept is easily a 5/5 for me!
World Building: As mentioned above, historical fiction, but the author did a fantastic job of describing the small village the characters lived on. I've read a decent amount of historical fiction and have had relatives live through war, as well, and the building up to climatic events were so well done. Another 5/5!
Writing: As one may guess from my two scores so far, the writing was also great. It was kind of weird, I usually fly through books I enjoy but this book took me a while to complete. Things were descriptive in a way that things were so clear to me in my mind. It really felt within it's time. There were parts of the book where I was content/happy for the characters and then I felt heartbreak over and over again. I remember one point where I had to put the book down and just figure out whether I could continue on because I was so effected by a scene. It takes a lot to get a reaction like that out of me. 5/5
Characters: I love and hate when I can see and understand the "antagonists" position. All of these characters were so dynamic and unique. I wanted to peer deeper into their lives away from the main protagonist. I love seeing things through her eyes and her narration but everyone else seemed so rich as well. They were so human and they felt so familiar to me. 5/5
Aesthetic: I feel like it is not right to judge a real life location's aesthetic is an interest choice in terms of book reviews so I will judge this main, reoccurring environment: the sea. There actually wasn't a ton of descriptions of underwater or sea life other than a few sentences here and there. I am a romantic so I would have preferred more, especially since the main character finds comfort in the sea. So, I will give this a 4/5.

For the ask game orchid, aloe vera, Jasmin, and papyrus!
thank you for enabling me lmaooooo <3
orchid ⇢ what’s a song you consider to be perfect?
knives by matoma & FRENSHIP. i'm a little biased, because FRENSHIP is one of my all time favourite artists in the world, but what i specifically like about the song is that it perfectly evokes how i feel about bonds, friendships, and love, plus the production on it is just incredible. chefs kiss for those harmonies. it's one of those songs for me that just hits all the right buttons. then there's even more bonus points for the tom petty reference and talking about camping, because i was a girl scout my entire life and camping is something i loooooove doing with friends.
aloe vera ⇢ what’s something (mundane) you really want to experience in life?
not to be A Purveyor Of Capitalism on main, but because my most common flight path is a 30 hour trek covering about 10,000 miles, i'd really, really like to fly the transpacific leg of my trips back and forth in first or business class, just once for the experience of it.
jasmine ⇢ do you have a movie or book you loved but will never watch/read again?
the book my sister's keeper by jodi picoult. it's a beautifully written book and deals with really complex themes, particularly bodily autonomy, medical emancipation, the bonds between family and how debilitating illness can both bring family together and tear them apart. it's got a very bittersweet ending, and it's a book i cried reading. it's a wonderful read i would recommend, but i'm just not willing to put myself through that again. cuts a little too close to the bone, you know?
papyrus ⇢ if you put your ‘on repeat’ playlist on shuffle, what’s the first song that comes up? what do you like about it / associate it with?
wasted by peking duk was the first contender! i didn't discover peking duk until... i want to say triple j hottest 100 2019?? it's electro house type music and the energy is just fantastic. it's one of the songs that absolutely snaps me back to nights out (and nights in, and day events) in the tropics with my partner and friends, playing drinking games, going to the bars and clubs, and post-party hangover breakfasts at the beach, all warm nights and palm trees and swimming in a stranger's pool in our underwear at 4am. it's an instant smile to my face.

Based On a True Story
I recently watched the movie The Long Game, which is an inspirational story of Mexican American teenagers forming a golf club at a South Texas high school. It was a great film, but something irked me. The text “based on a true story” appeared right after the title.
The next day, I researched the facts, and the screenwriters had embellished them. Well, this is to be expected. Life is not always exciting, and moviegoers like action, drama, and intrigue. “It could have happened this way.” “The screenwriter punched up the story to make it fun.” “Who cares?”
And look who is getting upset. I write fiction, which means I am lying to every single reader. My first book is about an immortal. Living forever breaks the rules of physics and medicine. My second book is a spy drama where two nations tap secret American communication cables. That never happened. The third contains a storyline about telepathy and aliens. Completely impossible. Yet, I have the nerve to complain about a screenwriter uplifting an excellent story so moviegoers are more entertained.
I suppose I have dug myself into a hole. “We like our entertainment to be entertaining.” “It’s normal.” Umm, no. I still feel cheated. So, what is going on in my bonkers mind?
Here are the facts behind this movie. Golfing events occurred, and many people participated. These facts were recorded in newspapers. Author Humberto Garcia researched old newspapers, interviewed people, and wrote the excellent book Mustang Miracle. Wonderful. Then, the screenwriter tweaked the story to create an entertaining movie. Sure, “liberties” were taken, but the results were close to the original story.
It took only a few minutes of internet research to uncover the differences. “Why not go with the original? It was an interesting story. No need to embellish.” More to the point. “By putting this text on the screen, the movie producers admit to lying.”
The counterargument is that the movie version of events was more entertaining, and the “based on a true story” text makes it alright for viewers because they know creative liberties were applied right at the film’s beginning, meaning nobody was cheated.
Well? Is it fiction or nonfiction? A documentary or fairy tale? The film producers wish us to believe their movie contains a high percentage of solidly researched facts. After all, the screenwriter did not use aliens like I did.
Here is my disconnect. If the screenwriters change some minor facts, I would be fine. Instead, they changed a bunch and slapped a “based on a true story” text to reduce the complaints. Plus, they did not want to get hit with a lawsuit.
Having the “based on a true story” text seems like a copout that translates to: “I could not find a good story, so I took this bad one and changed a bunch of stuff. Now, pay me.”
When I researched the real story, I wondered what those players would think. The only way I can answer is to examine my own life. It has not been overly exciting, but what if there were a thrilling movie about me?
Matt Damon could play me; he even looks like me. I could have a mind-blowing childhood full of race cars and flying fighter aircraft like the film Iron Eagle. When I turned 25, I could invent a machine that cured cancer and fall in love with a fantastic woman played by Lucy Liu. And who would play my wise Uncle Al? Al Pacino. They even have the same first name. Fantastic!
Cured cancer? Race cars? Fighter jets? What the heck? I did not do that. Well… Can I imagine doing that? As proof, screenwriters invented the story for Iron Eagle. Here is the difference. There was no “based on a true story” disclaimer at the beginning of that movie. We all know it was pure fiction.
Yet, movie studios want a pass. “Come on. Watch our film. It has Dennis Quaid and Cheech Martin in it.” Well, I have a counterargument. Why don’t nonfiction books have that statement? “Building the Panama Canal. How Teddy Roosevelt single-handedly completed the entire project with a shovel. Based on a true story.” See, that does not work.
There are two reasons why nonfiction books do not punch up true stories. There is a long tradition of honesty among authors because readers have a higher standard. Second, the backlash is brutal when a nonfiction author is caught embellishing.
I should chill out and enjoy movies based on a true story. They are fun, and there is no actual harm. Yeah… It still leaves a bad taste.
You’re the best -Bill

Book Empty Leg Flight in India
Have you ever dreamed of flying on a private jet but found the cost to be prohibitive? Well, there's a more affordable way to enjoy that luxury experience: securing an empty leg flight. In India, the demand for empty leg flights is rising as more people discover this cost-effective and luxurious travel option. This article will guide you through everything you need to know about securing an empty leg flight in India, with a special spotlight on JetsetGo, a leading provider in the industry.
Understanding Empty Leg Flights
What are Empty Leg Flights?
Empty leg flights, also known as repositioning flights, occur when a private jet needs to fly without passengers to reposition for its next booking. Instead of flying empty, these flights are offered to passengers at a significantly reduced cost.
Why Do Empty Leg Flights Exist?
These flights exist because private jets often need to return to their base or move to another location for their next booked flight. Offering these repositioning flights at a discount allows operators to recoup some of the costs associated with the empty journey.
Advantages of Booking Empty Leg Flights
Cost-Effectiveness
One of the main advantages is the cost. Empty leg flights can be up to 75% cheaper than regular private jet charters. This makes it an attractive option for those looking to experience private jet travel without breaking the bank.
Luxury Experience at a Lower Price
You get all the perks of flying private—no long security lines, personalized service, and the comfort of a luxurious cabin—at a fraction of the regular price.
Flexibility and Convenience
These flights often offer more flexibility in terms of departure times and destinations. If your schedule is flexible, you can find some fantastic deals.
Disadvantages of Empty Leg Flights
Limited Availability
Since empty leg flights are based on existing schedules, their availability is limited. They are not as frequent as regular commercial flights or even standard private charters.
Fixed Schedules
You need to be flexible with your travel plans as these flights operate on fixed schedules. If the timing doesn’t match your needs, you may have to wait for another opportunity.
Potential for Last-Minute Changes
These flights can be subject to last-minute changes or cancellations if the original booking is modified. It’s essential to have a backup plan in case of such changes.

Researching Empty Leg Options
