Something really bothers me about Sothis. She's treated as a wise being, Byleth’s mentor, the one who keeps calm when other people panic or get emotional and yet not only does she never really censure Edelgard aside from calling her arrogant (which Edelgard herself admits), she saves all her scorn for Rhea. Even when she's about to disappear she's saying Rhea did SOMETHING suspicious to Byleth, and she has nothing bad to say about Byleth killing her in Safflower. What lesson are we supposed to take when the character closest to speaking with the Word of God (the trope) has only bad things to say about Rhea and never recants?

All pretense about Sothis, the Sothis Byleth interacts with being a "wise being" vanish with this line, spoken just before she disappears :

Gremlin!Sothis knows she hasn't been acting as a Goddess, she's been ignoring/shirking her responsabilities but, hey, who cares, at least she had fun.

I know this verse has some, uh, complicated relationship regarding duty and responsability, but Sothis basically telling the player that she didn't act as she ought to nor fulfilled her duties and responsabilities and yet isn't that miffed because she had fun instead, immediately writes her as someone who's not wise at all, or supposed to be taken seriously.

For what it's worth, I think Nopes!Sothis is wiser/closer to what her role as the "one who watches over Fodlan and its inhabitants" was supposed to be than Houses!Sothis, but then, I also think Houses!Sothis was written as an accident, because I refuse to believe KT and IS picked the most toxic mother of the franchise (and that's saying something when Blazing Blade offers serious competition!) as the mascot of the game.

Doylist wise, it feels like the devs designed her as the plot device that makes Byleth special, who teases a bit about JJ Abrams' mystery box. But then she and the box vanish in the second part of the game and no one really gives a fig about it. She's the quirky and sassy overpowered loli that somehow became a trope after OPM introduced Tatsuki but bar that, her role in the plot is basically being a Mc Guffin and a source of power.

Hell I just wrote a bit about it, but Rhea's main motivation to bring her back wasn't deemed "important enough" to be added in the game, per Word of God ( = the devs!). Aka what prime!Sothis was able to do and revered for wasn't important enough to make the cut :/

So it tells you, imo, enough about what Sothis was designed to be for Kusakihara'n'co.

Minor tidbit though, in that last scene, she says she doesn't know how Rhea managed to make her exist in Billy's body, but she doesn't call it "suspicious".

I agree about the, uh, say, oddity of her not commenting at all about Rhea's fate in CF, granted I think that was corrected a tiny little bit in Nopes in AG, where she comments on Dimitri and Felix's relics iirc, but she still can't say a thing in the "proper plot" whenever she has to fight Rhea, Flayn or Seteth.

If you use her as a bonus unit though... she has lines for them, where she's generally happy/glad to fight by their side, which is the bare minimum (or what we would call here "le minimum syndical") for a game where she has her memories and can somehow act on them (because she definitely has them back just before merging with Byleth, and yet, won't tell them a thing about the Agarthans or her children).

Sadly, given how Nopes was developed as a what-if AU, in FE16's proper canon*, we indeed have Sothis not giving a flying fuck** about her daughter and whatever Seteth and Flayn are to her.

*save for SS's ending : Sothis finally deigns to talk to her daughter if Byleth wants to shag Rhea, but it happens off-screen.

What do you make of Amy's relationship with her sister?

Considering Sophie sleeps with Dan twice, pretty damn toxic… 

I like to think that Amy found the strength to cut Sophie out of her life eventually. Either as part of her Dark!Amy phase, or maybe later on, when things were settling with Bill. I hope she would eventually realize that she does not need to keep someone in her life who cares so little about her and/or is incapable of showing her affection in any meaningful way.

There’s no canon information about their backstory as siblings. Sophie is introduced to us as Amy’s bitchy older sister, less traditionally impressive on all accounts and incredibly resentful about it, based on the way she snipes at Amy in the hospital room. Still, it’s made clear in the Iannucci years that Sophie is one of the people on whom Amy emotionally relies. They go to a spa together in 4.06, and I think we’re supposed to assume that in 4.03, when Amy’s talking on the phone about the chief of staff position, that it’s supposed to be her mother or Sophie. There’s also that deleted scene out there from 2.10, where Amy and Sophie are sitting in a restaurant and Amy’s going on about maybe having to look for a new job (I don’t have time to look it up right now, but I’m almost positive it’s 2.10 and that this scene exists and I didn’t hallucinate it.)  To me, this implies two things about Amy: first, she does not make friends easily if they aren’t already an extremely immediate part of her life (ie, family and coworkers), and second, that Amy and Sophie were maybe closer as children, because Amy has trouble letting go of people with whom she has shared a deep emotional connection. 

And not to defend Sophie or anything (fwiw, the actress does a great job!), but I also do think the character suffers from the immediate de-complicating of every character’s motivations and personality that occurs beginning in S5. Beforehand, there are tiny hints that Sophie has some real feeling for Amy and also that she has genuine interests beyond “being mean to Amy just because.” In that deleted scene mentioned above, Sophie has her infant child with her, and something about the way the actress played the scene physically gave me the impression that Sophie actually enjoyed motherhood to some degree. And her delivery of “Jesus, only you could be irritated by gamma waves and a whale,” has this kind of begrudging affection behind it. But in S5 and S7, she just becomes this obstacle for Dan and Amy, and that’s literally her entire purpose for existing. 

Changing subjects slightly from Amy and Sophie to Dan and the Brookheimers, I can never really get a read from Dan’s interactions with Amy’s family in 2.02 just how familiar they are with him. Sophie refers to him as “Dan Egan”, as if he’s someone mildly famous that she might know, not a boy that her younger sister had a giant crush on. Sophie is not really interested in DC politics, nor is Dan making frequent rounds on television yet, so it seems weird to me that she calls him “Dan Egan.” I guess I could see Sophie, like, hate-following press coverage of the VP because Amy would be there as well, and therefore Dan, which is why she might know him as Dan Egan and not Dan. And I just feel like if Amy had talked about Dan to Sophie back when he was cat-and-mousing her, or if Sophie had actually met him or even just heard a lot about him, she would simply call him Dan. (I do not refer to my younger sister’s ex-boyfriends by first and last name…) And now I am remembering that Sophie previously did not know that they had been on three dates, because her reaction is like “wow, guess he got what he wanted and then got out of there.” So, does Sophie even know that they dated? Has she just heard a lot about him from Amy’s mother? Does Dan have a minor DC fan-club, à la Joshua Lyman? Did Amy bring actually bring Dan home and it’s just that Sophie wasn’t there? It’s very ambiguous. 

There also seems to be this consensus in the fandom that Dan has met Amy’s mother previously, but I can’t remember why that is…is it because her mother waves at him through the window? (I’m not against this interpretation, just wondering where it comes from.) Sophie and Mrs. Brookheimer obviously have zero boundaries when it comes to Amy’s personal life, so I could also picture Mrs. Brookheimer not having met Dan and yet still ask probing questions about the status of his and Amy’s relationship. I’m sure it was insanely obvious to her mother (and Sophie, by extension) that Amy was head-over-heels for him.

However, in spite of all this pre-show ambiguity, I would argue that Amy clearly talked about Dan all the time while they were lobbying together and I’d even go so far as to say that he’d been over to the Brookheimer residence few times before the Thanksgiving episode in season five, considering how familiar everyone is with each other. He’s sitting in their kitchen with his laptop open like he belongs there. (Incidentally, I think I knew Bring Me to Light was going to be a real fic when I wrote the dialogue between Dan and Sophie’s kids at the end of Chapter 2, the whole “hey, junior Brookheimers” scene. I had this little bubble of writing glee inside me, like “oh yes, how can I not write this?!”

I got a speeding ticket in July going 100 mph in California. I live in AZ and was visiting when I got pulled over. I got a notice in the mail saying it's mandatory for me to appear in court. My parents are the primary insurance holders of the car insurance. It is full coverage and the 1st wreck since having this insurance which has been 5 years for this car.
