Flucc Wien, Praterstern 5, 1020 Vienna
Online film screening: https://streaming.goldenpixelcoop.com
Films by: Patricia Esquivias, Hanna Rullmann & Faiza Ahmad Khan, Shireen Seno, Tin Wilke & Miguel Goya Billboards by: Pille-Riin Jaik Botanical walk by: Birgit Lahner Curated by: Enar de Dios Rodríguez and Marlies Pöschl, The Golden Pixel Cooperative
The film programme plants as a site of knowledge collects stories about the relationship between plants and memory, accounts that inform about the socio-political and economic entanglements present in ecosystems’ histories. What kind of memory do plants carry with them? To what extent are they part of cultural memory? Can time be turned back in ecosystems and if so, what are the (political) implications? The films that will be presented during this screening reflect on how plants have been separated from their environment in the service of colonial representation or economic interests in order to circulate or be grown in another place.
Besides the screening, which will happen at flucc and will be available online via the GPC Online Screen for a week, there will be also a “botanical walk” around the flucc area lead by Birgit Lahner, and artworks by GPC member Pille-Riin Jaik will be presented on the flucc billboards.
FILM PROGRAMME
Shireen Seno: To Pick a Flower, 2021, 17 min.
Patricia Esquivias: Cardón cardinal, 2020, 38:37 min.
Hanna Rullmann & Faiza Ahmad Khan: Habitat 2190, 2019, 16:34 min.
Tin Wilke & Miguel Goya: Las Flores, 2022, 19 min.
BILLBOARDS Pille-Riin Jaik: Communal Weeds, 2023, intervention on billboards Weeds like to thrive on disturbed lands. Their favourite locations being next to train stations and roadsides. They adapt with ease to rather cruel conditions and enrich the damaged soils during transitory phases. Where there is a need, there's weed. Deemed quite often unuseful and of disturbance by the pragmatists, weeds have developed various forms of counteractions and elaborate skills of perseverance. Like a many-headed monster, if it's plucked out, a new, more-headed version will appear.
WORKSHOP Birgit Lahner: Botanical walk around the Flucc Past, present and future from a plant perspective The diversity of urban plants, especially the fragmented floodplain landscape in the 2nd district, but also the inconspicuous flora of the city's wastelands and pavement cracks, often perceived at best as a backdrop, gradually come to the fore on this walk. This new view of urban vegetation allows us to recognise the manifold interrelationships between humans and plants and to marvel at their adaptability.
Max. 15 participants, registration at [email protected] Please wear appropriate clothing, the walk will also take place in the event of rain.
FILMS:
Shireen Seno, To Pick a Flower, 2021, Video
A potted plant is placed on a pedestal: It becomes a stand-in for an absent groom in a wedding photograph. While this plant seems to bear a certain agency, the plants in the images to follow have been broken apart in ever smaller pieces, in order to be transported by workers and then sold. Using photographs taken during the American colonial era in the Philippines, Shireen Seno traces the sticky relations between humans, nature and their entanglements with empire.
Patricia Esquivias, Cardón cardinal, 2020, Video In 1992, a giant cactus from the desert of Baja California was moved to Spain in order to be showcased at the Mexican Pavilion gardens of the Sevilla Universal Expo. Esquivias’ film tells the history of this journey, the cactus’ life afterwards, currently surrounded by the pavements of a parking lot, and many entangled stories. The narrated collage constructed by Esquivias, which partly happens in front of her computer screen, as it’s characteristic from her video works, draws careful and unpredictable lines between past and present.
Hanna Rullmann & Faiza Ahmad Khan, Habitat 2190, 2019, Video “Habitat 2190” takes as protagonist a site in Calais (France) which served as a migrant camp and is planned to become a nature reserve area. This essay film reflects upon the artificialities of borders, and the intersection of mobilities, while questioning how value is constructed, how nature is imagined and which species get to be protected. Rullmann & Ahmad Khan’s work juxtaposes conversations, official documents, and on-site recordings in order to reveal complex issues from contemporary Europe.
Tin Wilke & Miguel Goya, Las Flores, 2022, Video Trios of magic bells are neatly lined up on the shelf of a supermarket. In “Las Flores”, the people whose labour is behind the immaculate appearance of these flowers become visible. Through the eyes and ears of their mobile phones, Vicky, Roca and Tincho, three Latinx immigrants document their work in a German flower factory during the first lockdown in 2020. A dazzling film told from the interstices, reflecting on labour, the fear of what comes next and the moments of freedom in between.

A few snapshots - raw - dirty - unedited. Late upload here - but hey, never say never. Our deepest thanks belong to all the participating artists on Day 1 & 2. Cardinal SIN's still ringing in our ears, it was legendary - local and most probably international event history has been written here - either directly or indirectly, consciously or unconsciously, and that was due to the always-outstanding SIN crowd. It was an honor for FLUCC and its whole team to have the founding fathers of the Free Tek / Free Soundsystems Party movement at our venue. Moreover the Cardinal SIN outlined another important and often overlooked aspect (over and over again): The real cherry on top were not only the international heavyweights & headliners on Day 1 and 2, furthermore especially the true Austrian TEK / Hard Techno / Mental Tribe / Industrial - archangels underscored again the so called - almost 'spiritual' - cultural impact of Vienna & Rest-Austria onto the rest of the planetary TEK & Techno-Memplex, when it comes to cutting edge underground trends - and artistically developing them for the next dancefloor generation...
... cuz in the end ... Industrial Music is not only for Industrial PPL- SIN bridges the dusty echochambers and genre dogmas: Industrial will always remain within the 'Real Underground Event Horizons' to bondage the normie-sphere from time to time.
Cordial thx again to R-Zac aka Crystal distortioN x 69db [SP23 | Network23recordings], see you soon again in Vienna. @ Simon Carter & Sebastian Vaughan - nothing of your LEGO Soundsystem legacy (@ Arena Vienna - mid 90s to 2000s) was ever lost here - as we were able to witness first hand - it was imprinted into the city's epigenetic party & dancefloor code (therefore encoded also within the collective spirit?).
The Shirin & KeTon shots were shamelessly re-upped from their accounts - sorry for that (the motive was to keep this teaser post compact) - as an excuse I will provide more close-ups of your day 1 performance at a later point.
Please note: A much better vid with an overview on both days will be released soon (hopefully, time's the soul of things..).
Next SIN: Friday 13th Oct 2023 - LineUp t.b.a. soon.

N7 Month, 2019: Day 6 - Reunion
It’s more domestic fluff!
++
“You see, I knew your Dad was on-board the Normandy.” Shepard bounced his son on his knee, handing him the model of the Normandy SR-2 the boy had plucked from the glass case. It was his favorite model, and that always gave Shepard a warm feeling.
“He was?” Shaun took the ship by one of its engine components.
“Mhm,” Shepard nodded, fixing Shaun’s hands to a less fragile part of the hull to hang onto. “I had just barely escaped the first Reaper attack, and your dad was in the Normandy and was coming to get me.” He looked up at Kaidan, sitting across the living room, reading a data-pad. But Kaidan wasn’t really reading from his pad anymore, looking over the top of it at Shepard with a wry smile.
“He was looking for you?”
“Absolutely. Anyway, I had gotten into a fight with a bunch of mean Reapers. I was pinned down, I was trapped!” He gingerly lifted the Normandy model out of his son’s hands. He made whooshing sounds as the model swiftly dropped down over the boy’s head, whizzing past him and settling on his lap. “When all of a sudden, whoosh! Down comes Daddy in the Normandy.”
“Was Uncle Joker flying?” Shaun piped up.
“Course he was,” Shepard smiled. Tapped where the shuttle bay would be on the real Normandy, “The shuttle bay opens up, and out pops Daddy, wearing his armor, got a gun in his hand: saves me from the Reapers!”
Kaidan rolled his eyes on the other sofa and suppressed a laugh.
“He shot the Reapers?”
“He did!” Shepard nodded firmly. “So I jump onto the Normandy, and you know what happens next?”
“What?”
“Your Dad takes the gun out of my hand, and lays a big kiss right on me!”
“Did he really!?”
“Mhm. Told me he loved me very much, and wanted to be with me.” Shepard turned his son’s chin so father and son were both looking at Kaidan on the opposite couch. “Can you just picture it? Daddy in his big blue armor? Smoking gun in his hand?”
“I can picture it!”
“That’s right. That’s when I knew he loved me. Then, when we flew to Mars, he forgave me for working with the bad guys all that time.”
“Wait, was that your first kiss?”
“Sure was.”
Kaidan set his pad down at his side and gave Shepard a look.
“I guess that’s pretty romantic,” Shaun said, authoritatively, as if appraising one of his favorite episodes of Duty and the Sword.
“Damn right it, is, kiddo.”
“And that’s really what happened when you and dad made up?”
“You asked, didn’t you?”
“Yeah, but Daddy never told me you guys kissed and stuff!”
“Oh,” said Shepard mirthlessly. “So you already asked your Daddy to tell you this story, huh?”
“Yeah, last night,” Shaun replied. Kaidan raised a challenging eyebrow.
“And what did he say about it?”
“He said he was still angry at you for working with the bad guys, and you were still mad at him, too. He said you two fought until he had to go to the hospital.”
Looking dead at Kaidan, Shepard leaned down to kiss his son on top of his head.
“My version’s true.”
“What?” Kaidan finally guffawed.
“Anyway,” Shepard took the Normandy model out of Shaun’s hands again and scooted the boy off his lap. “Besides, it’s time for you to go to bed. Go get ready and Daddy and I will be up to tuck you in, okay?”
Shaun ran off and Kaidan stood up from the sofa, coming to sit next to Shepard.
“A big kiss and a heartfelt ‘I love you,’ huh?” Kaidan smiled. “You filling our son’s head with lies, Commander?”
“Just well-intentioned revisions,” Shepard begged. “It wasn’t like I didn’t know how I felt about you, even then. And now that I knew you felt the same way about me, makes sense to condense the timeline, don’t you think?”
“I think it’s important how we got together,” Kaidan leaned in to smile against his lips. He kissed Shepard for a long moment.
“Me too,” Shepard answered, returning the smile. “And someday he’ll understand how two people can love each other and be furious with each other, someday he’ll understand how fighting can bring two people closer together, and god-willing, someday he’ll learn what it’s like to be in love despite all odds.”
“I’m ready for bed!” Came a cry from balcony.
“Until then,” Shepard stood up, holding out his hand to help Kaidan up. “Why not tell it the way I wish it would’ve happened?”
“That’s a slippery slope, Shepard. Telling the things the way you wish they would’ve happened.”
“Maybe. But it’s always about you.”
