FIFA: The World’s Biggest Competition Returns
The FIFA World Cup is officially underway
By Franchesca D.
Some of the best players in this year’s World Cup

The 2022 FIFA World Cup began on November 20, 2022 in Qatar, and already holds the world’s rapt attention.
For those unfamiliar with the FIFA World Cup, it is the biggest tournament for international soccer held every four years. It is one of the most watched sports competitions around the world, with more than 3.5 billion viewers during the 2018 World Cup and the 2022 World Cup expected to reach an audience of 5 billion.
The FIFA World Cup Qualifiers is a lengthy process that occurs years before the final tournament. Each of FIFA’s six regional soccer confederations holds preliminary tournaments and qualifier matches. The six FIFA confederations are UEFA (Europe), CONMEBOL (South America), CONCACAF (North, Central America and the Caribbean), AFC (Asia plus Australia), CAF (Africa), and OFC (Oceania). Teams in each league play each other for points; a win is worth three points, a draw is worth one point and a loss is worth no points. The teams with the most points at the end of the qualifying period advance to the World Cup to represent their confederation. However, this means that not all confederations may be represented.
Now the World Cup. The teams are split into eight groups of four teams, with groups lettered A to H. Each group was created through a random draw out of four points in April, with teams placed in pots based on their FIFA world ranking. The top two teams of each group advance to the round of 16. The winner of each group plays the runner-up of the succeeding letter group until there are only 8 teams left. For example, the first seed of Group A would play the second seed of Group B. In the case where two teams are tied in points, the first-place team is the team with the highest point differential. The knockout rounds continue to the quarterfinals, where eight teams battle for a place as one of the four teams in the semi-finals. The top two teams from the semi-finals play against each other in the finals for the FIFA World Cup trophy and the title of FIFA World Champions.
There are many strong contenders in this year’s tournament, with Argentina, Brazil, Portugal, and the reigning champion France all having strong chances of winning. The top soccer players are also scheduled to make appearances with their respective teams, including stars like Kylian Mbappe (France), Lionel Messi (Argentina), Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal), and Neymar (Brazil) showcasing their skills. With this World Cup being the final tournament of beloved players like Ronaldo and Messi (and possibly Neymar), fans and players alike are tuning in to watch them play one last time.
The tournament so far has seen some shocking results, specifically Argentina’s 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia. Argentina was higher ranked and a team favoured to win the Cup; viewers expected an easy win against Saudi Arabia on November 22. However, when Saudi Arabia, a team expected to lose, won against Argentina and fan-favourite Messi, it became one of the biggest upsets in the tournament.
Canada has also created history. This is the first Canadian team to play in the World Cup since 1986 in Mexico and the second time Canada qualified for the World Cup in history. They played against Belgium and Croatia, with a 1-0 and 4-1 loss respectively. In their Croatia game, Canada made history as they scored their first goal in their World Cup history. Canada recently played against Morocco, hoping for a win, but lost 2-1. Unfortunately, Canada will not advance to the knockout round of 16.

The countries advancing to the round of 16 are Argentina, the USA, France, Poland, the Netherlands, Croatia, England, Senegal, Morocco, Japan, Spain, Portugal, Australia, Switzerland, South Korea, and Brazil. As of December 5th, Argentina, France, the Netherlands, Croatia and England are moving on to the quarter finals, eliminating Australia, the USA, Poland, Senegal, and Japan in the process.
Despite all that has already occurred, the FIFA World Cup is far from over, and fans from around the world are anticipatedly waiting and watching to see who comes out on top.

[ad_1] Gurpreet Singh Sandhu (PC: AIFF) Gurpreet Singh Sandhu has now entered his 13th year with the national team. As the most seasoned player in the Indian squad following Sunil Chhetri’s retirement, Sandhu recently reached a milestone of 75 international caps in a match against Vietnam, where he captained the side and made a critical penalty save. Currently, Sandhu is training in Hyderabad with the Blue Tigers in preparation for their friendly match against Malaysia on November 18. Speaking to the media on Wednesday, he shared insights into their preparations. “Everyone understands that this is our final FIFA-friendly window before the crucial Asian Cup Qualifiers in March. It’s essential for us to make the most of this opportunity. We’re also happy to have Sandesh Jhingan back in the fold. It’s great to see him fully recovered and already playing a few games for FC Goa. We have five more days of training before facing Malaysia, which is helpful as it gives us time to work together as a team and adapt to the new system under our coach,” Sandhu explained. India took on Malaysia in the Merdeka Tournament last October in Kuala Lumpur, where they narrowly lost 2-4 in an intense match. It was Sandhu’s first encounter with the Southeast Asian side, and he felt the result didn’t reflect India’s hard work, calling it an unfortunate outcome. With renewed determination, the Blue Tigers aim to secure a win this time in Hyderabad. For the Latest Sports News: Click Here Gurpreet Singh Sandhu for India (PC: AIFF) “Playing in Malaysia was a different experience. They’re a strong side, with a lot of fresh talent and skilled players from abroad. We could have come away with more from that match; it was an unlucky result, especially since we had a goal disallowed. But things like that happen in football. We need to move past it and focus on making sure we get the best outcome at home,” Sandhu reflected. Sandhu also spoke about the fierce competition for the goalkeeper spot on the national team, with top players like Amrinder Singh and Vishal Kaith pushing each other to perform. Every training session becomes a chance to earn the starting position. “Representing the national team is a great responsibility. I know how important this role is, so I’m committed to giving my all. It’s a privilege to have goalkeepers like Amrinder and Vishal, as they push me to improve, and I push them. In this team, it’s not about who plays and who doesn’t—it’s about working together. The competition isn’t only among goalkeepers; the outfield players have it too, with young talents from their clubs joining in. When we’re here, we’re united under one goal,” Sandhu emphasized. Looking ahead, the bigger goal is to qualify for a third consecutive AFC Asian Cup. Having been part of three Asian Cup squads (2011, 2019, and 2023), Sandhu sees this as the minimum objective for the team. “With every camp under Manolo, we’re aligning more closely with his vision. His expertise and experience will undoubtedly make us a formidable team in the Asian Cup qualifiers. Qualifying should be the minimum for us because we’ve already done it twice. It’s something we should take as a given and build from there. Let’s stay focused and work hard to achieve that,” Sandhu said. Proven track record of success in professional football.
Nathan Noël Romejo Tjoe-A-On, born 22 December 2001 is a professional footballer who plays as a left-back, center-back or midfielder for EFL Championship club Swansea City. Born in the Netherlands, he plays for the Indonesia national team.
Tjoe-A-On was signed to a three-year contract with Excelsior in 2019, after developing through their youth system. However, injuries stunted his development and he lost around 14 months of playing and training time. After the 2021–22 winter break he returned to action and gained confidence in his ability and felt able to do himself justice on the football field again.
Following their promotion from the Eerste Divisie at the end of the 2021–22 season he received a contract extension in June 2022, for an additional two years. He made his Eredivisie debut for Excelsior on 12 August 2022 against SC Cambuur at Cambuur Stadion in a 2–0 victory. On 9 September 2022, he scored his first professional league goal, helping Excelsior to a 2–1 win over FC Emmen.
In October 2023, reports in Indonesia suggested that Tjoe-A-On was invited to play internationally for the Indonesia national football team through naturalization. On 12 October 2023, Tjoe-A-On watched and talked directly with PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir and Indonesian President Joko Widodo when the Indonesian national team hosted Brunei Darussalam in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.
On 7 March 2024, Tjoe-A-On received a call-up to the Indonesia national team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers match against Vietnam on 21 March and 26 March 2024. On 21 March 2024, he made his international debut for Indonesia in a 1–0 win against Vietnam.
In April 2024, Tjoe-A-On was named in the Indonesia U23 final squad for the 2024 AFC U-23 Asian Cup held in Qatar. He was initially only allowed to play in the group stage and returned to the Netherlands afterward. However his club Heerenveen eventually let him return to Qatar and play in the quarter-finals.
𝗗𝗜𝗦𝗖𝗟𝗔𝗜𝗠𝗘𝗥
Due to the X new rules and policy, I would like to declare that this account is just for roleplayer purpose only. I’m not the real Nathan Tjoe-A-On, I don’t have any connection to the real one. Thank you.

AFC World Cup Qualifiers recap: Round 4
Japan 1:1 Australia
Tony Popovic has rejuvenated the Socceroos as they end Japan's winning streak in the World Cup qualifiers and earn a point in a 1 - 1 draw played out in Saitama, Japan. The blue samurai were the clear favourites and dominated the entire game as is evident from the number of shots they took 12, while Australia took only one shot throughout the game. Funnily enough, both teams opened their scoring with two dramatic own goals. This draw doesn't seem to hurt Japan as they're still table toppers while it proves to be a major moral boost for the Subway Socceroos. Goal scorer for Japan: Cameron Burgess (OG) Goal scorer for Australia: Shogo Taniguchi (OG)
Korea Republic 3:2 Iraq
South Korea secured three crucial points on Tuesday with a hard-fought victory against Iraq. The Iraqi defense held firm for most of the first half, but Se Hun Oh broke the deadlock in the 41st minute, putting Korea ahead. Iraq quickly responded in the second half, equalizing through Aymen Hussein's swift strike. However, their joy was short-lived, as South Korea doubled the lead by the 83rd minute, effectively sealing the outcome. In the dying moments of stoppage time, Ibrahim Bayesh managed to narrow the deficit for Iraq, but it was too late. The win keeps South Korea atop the group standings, while Iraq remains in third place. Goal scorers for South Korea: Se Hun Oh, Hyun-gyu Oh, Jae-sung Lee Goal scorers for Iraq: Aymen Hussein, Ibrahim Bayesh
China PR 2:1 Indonesia
China ended their losing streak in the FIFA World Cup qualifier on Tuesday with a much-needed victory over Indonesia. Team Garuda despite being lower ranked than China were undoubtedly the better team on the field. Indonesia didn't allow China to relax even once during the entire game however they were rather lackluster in front of goal and China took advantage of that. China had two big chances in the entire 90 minutes and they scored from both of them. While Indonesia did manage to pull one back in the 86' minute but it was already too late for them to salvage a point. Despite winning the game, China remains at the very bottom of the group while Team Garuda stays at 4th place, just above China. Goal scorers for China: Baihelamu Abuduwaili, Yuning Zhang Goal scorer for Indonesia: Thom Haye
Kyrgyzstan 1:0 DPR Korea
Kyrgyzstan stunned North Korea to earn their first three points in the FIFA World Cup qualifier. The match was closely contested, with both teams evenly matched and pushing each other to the limit. While North Korea displayed a slightly stronger performance overall, it was Kyrgyzstan that came out on top, thanks to a well-placed bottom-right shot from centre-back Christian Brauzman. Despite having several opportunities to equalize, North Korea struggled to convert their chances, allowing Kyrgyzstan to secure a crucial victory. Goal scorer for Kyrgyzstan: Christian Brauzman
Uzbekistan 1:0 United Arab Emirates
The UAE faced a defeat against Uzbekistan in their World Cup Qualifier match, where the latter displayed complete dominance throughout the game. The UAE struggled to implement their game plan effectively, and their situation worsened after receiving a red card in the second half. This setback ultimately led to a penalty, which proved to be the deciding factor between the two teams. With this victory, Uzbekistan remains in close contention with group leaders Iran, while the UAE currently holds third place in the group. Goal scorer for Uzbekistan: Otabek Shukurov
Palestine 2:2 Kuwait
Juan Pizzi's Palestine managed to secure a point from a losing position in their World Cup Qualifier match against Kuwait. The game was evenly contested, with both teams creating numerous opportunities but failing to convert most of them. Kuwait had a prime chance to secure their first victory in the qualifiers after Palestine's Camilo Saldaña was sent off in the second half. However, Zaid Qunbar's late heroics enabled Palestine to rescue a point. Both Palestine and Kuwait remain at the bottom of the group, having yet to win any of their four matches. Goal scorers for Palestine: Wessam Abou Ali, Zaid Qunbar Goal scorer for Kuwait: Yousef Nasser
Jordan 4:0 Oman
Jordan dominated Oman in their World Cup qualifier match, delivering a decisive 4-0 victory in a one-sided affair. Despite controlling possession for much of the game, Oman struggled to challenge the Jordanian defense, while Jordan's forwards relentlessly pressured the Omani backline. This emphatic win propelled Jordan to second place in the group, overtaking Iraq, while Oman remains in fourth place. Goal scorers for Jordan: Yazan Al-Naimat, Ali Olwan
IR Iran 4:1 Qatar
In a surprising turn of events, the reigning champions of Asia, Qatar, suffered a heavy defeat against Team Melli. Despite taking an early lead in the first half with a brilliant strike from Almoez Ali, Qatar's advantage quickly faded. Ali's goal appeared to ignite Iran's response, as they went on to score four unanswered goals. This defeat serves as a harsh lesson for Qatar, now facing the risk of missing out on World Cup qualification. Meanwhile, Iran continues to solidify its position at the top of the group. Goal scorers for Iran: Sardar Azmoun, Mohammed Mohebi Goal scorer for Qatar: Almoez Ali
Saudi Arabia 0:0 Bahrain
Mancini's Saudi Arabia failed to meet expectations, as they were held to a surprising 0-0 draw by Bahrain in the final match of Round 4 of the World Cup Qualifiers. Despite dominating possession and applying consistent pressure on the Bahraini defence, Saudi Arabia could not convert their chances into goals. They were awarded a penalty in the first half, presenting an opportunity to take an early lead; however, Salem Al Dawsari's shot was saved by the impressive Ebrahim Lutfalla, who was rightfully named Player of the Match. Bahrain's attack posed little threat to the Saudi backline, as they focused on containing the relentless Saudi assault. In the end, Bahrain secured a crucial point against a stronger opponent, while Roberto Mancini faces increasing scrutiny and the potential risk of dismissal for failing to deliver results.

India needs 20 years to make progress, big name coach won’t take job: Stimac
Panaji: Igor Stimac isn’t going down without a fight.Sacked earlier this week for a string of disappointing results that started with India finishing as the worst-performing among 24 teams at the AFC Asian Cup — no goals, no point — and missing out on qualification to the next stage of the Fifa World Cup qualifiers, Stimac said he was planning to resign, even if India had made it to the third…

Iran emerged the winner after a penalty shootout was needed to separate the teams following a 1-1 result at the end of extra time.
It was an end-to-end contest that captivated the spectators for more than two hours and the underdog’s fight that Syria showed.
Iran started the game as favourites on many counts.
Higher ranking: Iran are second in Asia and 21st in the world in FIFA’s men’s rankings, compared with Syria’s 91st position in the world and 13th in Asia.
Past glory: Iran have won the Asian Cup three times – although the last time they triumphed was 48 years ago – while Syria had never previously gone past the group stage.
Tournament run: Iran topped their group with three wins and a goal difference of five. Syria snuck into the knockouts as one of the four best third-place teams on the back of a 1-0 win over hapless India and a goalless draw with Uzbekistan.
And finally, reputation: Iran were one of the title contenders alongside the likes of Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and Australia. Syria were rated as one of the teams that would do wonders by qualifying for the knockouts.
Their progress thrilled Syrian fans as it gave them a chance to see their team in action one more time, especially at a stadium that kept them very close to the action. Both sets of fans loved every minute of the action.
The intensity of the on-field action was closely matched by the singing and chanting off it.
The 10,000-capacity venue was evenly packed with supporters of both teams. They came prepared with drums, trumpets, flags of various sizes and powerful vocal cords. Once the action was under way, each wave of attack on the pitch was matched by a crescendo of noise off it.
Iran took the lead when their star forward Mehdi Taremi converted a penalty in the 34th minute, but Syria kept mounting pressure on the Iranian goal.
Their efforts paid off when they were awarded a penalty in the second half and Omar Khribin stepped up to convert it and send Syria’s fans into dreamland.
And when Taremi was sent off in injury time, Syria felt the one-man advantage could help them sneak a winner.
But somehow Iran managed to fend off the Syrian attacks, which Team Melli’s coach Amir Ghalenoei credited to a “compact and disciplined performance” in his post-match comments.
In the end, what separated them on the field after more than two hours of action was one saved penalty kick.
When Ehsan Hajsafi successfully converted Iran’s last penalty to make it 5-3 in the shootout, Syrian players dropped to the ground in disbelief. In the stands, their fans wore a look of shock. Children with their faces painted with the Syrian flags sobbed but some fans, like Adnan Yazbek, said they were immensely proud of the team.
“Our team defied expectations to come this far and give Iran such a fight, so I’m heartbroken but I have a smile on my face because they made me feel proud of being Syrian,” Yazbek told Al Jazeera.
Mohammed Abdullah, a Syrian fan, said the team has overcome many off-field challenges due to the ongoing war in the country and consequential complications.
“Football is loved by everyone in Syria and this team is loved by all Syrians around the world,” Abdullah said.
“Me and my little sister are heartbroken, but this is football and as long as we know our players gave everything, we are going to continue supporting them.”
The Syrian team and their travelling fans return home to shift their focus on the 2026 World Cup qualification.
Meanwhile, Iran face the Samurai Blue in an afternoon kickoff in the third quarterfinal on Saturday.

[ad_1] Sandesh Jhingan gearing up for the for the ISL game against Punjab FC. Source: FC Goa X If you are a follower of Indian football, the one name that you would have been elated to see in the list of 26 players announced by Manolo Marquez for the friendly against Malaysia is that of Sandesh Jhingan. Needless to say, India missed Jhingan in the World Cup qualifiers against Afghanistan and Kuwait, and his presence could have made a decisive difference. Out with an injury suffered at the AFC Asian Cup in January, Jhingan is now back at his best for his club, FC Goa, and is also all set to don the Blue Tigers jersey once more. A rather grateful Jhingan spoke to Boria Majumdar about the national team comeback and how difficult the journey has been in the past few months. Excerpts: Boria: Many congratulations on making it back to where you belong. How does it feel to get back, and how difficult has it been? Jhingan: It has indeed been difficult. And it feels extremely good to be back. I am very grateful to everyone who stood by me and, honestly, it is largely due to their efforts that I am back to where I need to be. First, it is my wife and my little daughter. She will never know that it was because of her that I pushed myself to walk. When she started taking her first toddler steps, I felt I needed to walk with her and enjoy the moment. At the time, I was in searing pain but seeing my daughter walk, I could do what I did. There is no greater joy than seeing your little one grow and my wife, who has been a constant source of inspiration, and my daughter have helped me tide over this period of uncertainty. I have to say all my colleagues, formerly Igor [Stimac] and the team, and now FC Goa and Manolo [Marquez] have been hugely supportive. There was never any pressure from FC Goa and they allowed me my space. I will be ever grateful to the club and my coach. For More Sports Related Content Click Here Sandesh Jhingan in action during FC Goa’s ISL clash against Bengaluru FC. Source: FC Goa X Boria: You mentioned Manolo. He is now the coach of the national team as well. You have seen and been with him at FC Goa. That should help. Jhingan: He is brilliant. Just brilliant. And I am not trying to please anyone, I have to qualify that. He doesn’t need that. When I came back after AFC, he was supremely supportive of me. I was wiling to defer my surgery and play with pain for a few more weeks if needed. But he was clear and always had my good in mind. Even when I was of no use to him, he stood by me and had my back. And as coach, he is excellent. I am confident we will have a very good stint with him. His understanding of the game, grooming of players, tactical acumen is second to none, and the number of players he has been able to develop in the last few years is testimony. Boria: At a time when you are making it back to the national team, things are not looking the best for Indian football. There is a lot of gloom around. We all felt we’d be able to qualify for the third round of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. It did not happen. How hopeful are you of the national team? Jhingan: Very hopeful. Yes, there is gloom around but it also an opportunity to change things for the better. We have a job to do, and under Manolo, we will do that job. We have to come together and collectively give our best. The second half against Vietnam is evidence we can play good football, and now it is imperative we do so consistently and get Indian football back on track. These are difficult times, but it is only when you put in the hard yards that you get success. Ten years down the line, we will all look back at these years and to the work we put in and think this is how we were able to turn things around. I want to play a little part in the process, and that’s why we are all here. It is national duty and there’s nothing bigger than that.
