THIS. another thing that’s been on my mind is that these characters are children. Children who are trying to do the right thing, yeah, but still dumb kids making dumb decisions.
Avatar The Last Airbender has children as their main cast, the difference? They’re emotionally mature, or as much as they can be as kids.
I just wish the adults were more competent or more present in this series. Amaya is a fine example of this, heck even Viren is a good example of this. Corvus and Soren felt like joke characters and pushed to the side and treated as such. Heck Aanya has emotional maturity, where does the rest of the child cast get theirs?
Claudia is the only one that can be understood by the audience because of what she says, because of exposition. Not saying excused away, but we can understand that she has been traumatized and manipulated, she’s heavily misguided in her actions.
Some reviews for Season 5 are…let’s say I think they are missing the point.
Reviewer: Most of the problems these characters face is a direct result of them acting like dumbasses.
Me internally: That’s because our heroes ARE dumbasses!
Dumb decisions in and of themselves don’t equal a bad plot line. Intelligent characters making uncharacteristically bad decisions make a bad plot line. It brakes our suspension of disbelief and takes us out of the story.
But it is completely in character for Callum to lose track of time trying to find something to help his friend’s parents.
It is completely character for Ezran to risk the wrath of a pirate to save three baby glowtoads.
These acts are addressed even if they will likely be useful later. Amaya gets annoyed with her nephew, and throws him over her shoulder. Ezran offers up his hand saying that he should lose a hand because he’s the one who stole. They are kids, kids who think like kids.
If Amaya stayed too late looking for something that would help Janai, or Janai stole three hot at cubs, we should call bs. Because they are experienced soldiers who think in terms of casualties and mission priorities. Callum and Ezran are not. Of course they are going to screw up from time to time
#the dragon prince#literally guys they are KIDS#but kids written by adult writers#who gives them plot armor every time they mess up#that’s why I was happy when they let callum mess up#did they let him show that he was upset he messed up?#no#Ezran flipping switches and actually developing a backbone was welcomed#this late in the series however was a mistake#Soren regressed the same way Ezran kind of progressed#not happy about the Soren regression#the main cast was written awfully in the end#what else can you expect from child characters written by bad writers anyway#don’t give your characters so much plot armor to the point where they can’t mess up and do no wrong ever#that’s bad writing#but don’t punish them into oblivion just because they stepped on the wrong blade of grass either#it goes both ways#IM TALKING ABOUT LEOLA#Leola is the only narratively good thing to come out of arc 2#everything else was horribly executed
