Visiting my artist grandmother at the hospital, I show her my watercolour of Tom Riddle (as she taught me the basic techniques and helped me a lot –especially with my drawing of Sebastian and Ominis–)

My grandmother: Wow, that's beautiful! You're good, do you post your drawings on the internet?

Me: Yes, I do.

My grandma: With your talent, I'm sure you'll be in demand for commissions on your Harry Potter theme!

So, what can I say, mamie? I clearly don't have the talent to take on commissions 😂 (And what I do as art isn't that exceptional either, other artists are much more talented)

Hi uh,I really hope I'm not overstepping, since I'm a traditional artist,so everything I can tell you will be very beginner level when it comes to digital art, and whatever I can say will be about drawing in general. I do use ibispaint X,though. I use it for making edits and for typesetting, and sometimes for colouring manga panels

First off, you're doing great,the symmetry in their face and the eyes are very nice,the general direction of the hair and bangs is spot on,and they honestly look adorable. Don't be so hard on yourself,for the time you took it's great,I take at least 3 hrs to do my traditional disaster sketches.

So uh..I don't think line thickness or colour is a problem,though I almost always use a dark brown for the lineart except in places that'll be coloured black or in the green-blue side of the spectrum,but that's more a stylistic choice. What I'd say is,try to do as much in single strokes as possible,if a line makes you lose your grip, it's best to redo that line in as long strokes as possible,and stopping at corners or where a line crosses another,like the tops of hair segments (again that's not absolute,but I find that easy).

Then, I'd say to try out the different brushes. You probably already know,but ibispaint has a hell lot of brushes,and you can use all of them for free by just watching ad videos. For lineart,I personally find the Hard Mapping Pen and Soft Mapping Pen best,but you should try out and decide what works best for you

I'd say black lineart works fine,but if you want it coloured there's always this option: colouring the lineart itself with an airbrush, partially,with the colour you're going to fill it with,after selecting it with the magic wand tool

For shading,the key in my opinion, is looking at references and to keep using them until you can clearly get an idea of how lighting and shading works. Even after that, there's nothing wrong with using references,it is a tool of our trade. I don't usually use lighting references much anymore,I mainly use pose references,but for dramatic lighting,I very much do,I flash a light on myself and see in the mirror to figure out lighting if I'm confused. I took a few photos of my sleeve and skirt to demonstrate: in ambient light and most other lightings,folds of clothes are illuminated in such a way that there's a shadow along one edge,so if you draw a fold,one side of the line will be dark with a shadow,the other not,here,light above,shadow below

Thirdly,I know you want to focus on shading, which is great, taking one thing at a time is great,but I still think anatomy and posing is important to get a grasp on. It makes shading and colouring easier too,and again,I recommend using references. Look at stock photos,pose and look in the mirror,use pose apps(I recommend magicposer), take screenshots while watching anime if possible (at least,I do that). Most artists recommend doing studies and practicing everyday,but I don't do it, I've never done any,no one can force me to °^° but yeah,that IS a great way to improve

Finally,watch speedpaint videos, it's definitely not a must at all,but.... I remember at one point I refused to, because I took pride in the "self taught" part of my being an artist, and thought that'd be cheating. Er...I still do take pride,but at least I don't scroll away. When I see people drawing on my dashboard or tl,I watch. You don't have to incorporate anything in your art if you don't want(I practically don't, I'll watch 30+ videos and maybe find 2 techniques that are new and incorporable in my art),but watching people draw does help. Art is a journey,your art is for yourself before anyone else,so pushing yourself is good,but it's most important to enjoy the process! Don't be embarrassed to ask for critic ir advise,the internet is full of people who learned through various experiences, there's absolutely nothing to be ashamed of! I've gotten to where I am in part by asking my friends online for help and advice too. And don't worry too much about consistency and style, style is a great thing, and comes eventually,more easily if you're not hung up on it, and enjoy what you're drawing. I myself found my style last year in February,it was a great realization that made me very happy,but at one stage I WAS caught up on finding a style years ago,those months were probably the time I enjoyed drawing the least. Keep experimenting and drawing whatever you like, improving on parts that look off to you,style will come on its own!

What I admit I struggle most with is definitely shading.. Consistency also- my style keeps changing a lot and I don’t like it gkskvka Anatomy and anything else can wait... one step at a time 💪 I rly rly wanna improve orz

I’m thinking maybe lines are too thick also..? I used 2.5 brush and hmm 🤔💦 black lines bad to use??

Byrne draws a very pretty Jen and I love how he draws her hair but some of the people in the letters pages leading up to his return were acting like he's the only person who could possibly draw her ever which is simply not true

I like that when Jen got dumped in the goop that makes you into your "inner self" she remained as she was because the gamma radiation had already made her into her inner self (I see Slott conveniently forgot this issue when he was writing all his bullshit about Jen and She-Hulk being different)

Unrelated, I read Captain America v1 400-413 because Jen was in 400 and 401 and I got really concerned about the backup story where Crossbones kidnapped Diamondback and now I have some Opinions:

The Cap-Wolf stuff was very good

Diamondback almost killed Crossbones several times and good for her honestly it's what she deserves

I really enjoyed Captain America disguising himself as Crossbones and then having to fight a bunch of other villains because they thought he was Crossbones

Also Batroc sitting on the sidelines eating popcorn watching Cap fight off a bunch of supervillains after he exposed Cap's identity so true king

Diamondback was significantly less justified in murdering Snapdragon or whoever that was. Like, clearly this is all to cause conflict between her and Cap but why couldn't the murder have been Crossbones instead of some c-list supervillainess.

wait i just went back to look at some of the letters pages because i was interested if they were creating relationship drama for the sake of it or if the readers disliked the relationship and in 405 I found a lady who wrote in about how her son reads captain america and she complained about the depiction of, quote, "wilding youths" and the way male-female relationships are portrayed and how this might affect her son's, quote, "muddled, evolving mind." ok ma'am maybe instead of cancelling your son's subscription you can have a conversation with him about how to treat women and how crossbones is a villain specifically because of the way he's treating women instead of censoring what he's reading because 1: you automatically assumed that marvel was endorsing it and 2: it doesn't match up with your idyllic view of the world. The kid is going to encounter this type of thing anyway you might as well let him encounter it in an environment where you can have an informed conversation about it. Anyway clearly miss name witheld by request read seduction of the innocent.
