Q&A Interview:

Q: Your thoughts on debuting?

Youngmin: My goal has been to debut as a singer, but we received a lot of love through ‘Produce 101’, so people said we were semi-celebrities, but we constantly felt that we were trainees. So we’re really happy to have our debut ahead of us. But rather than just have fluttering feelings, there are still a lot of areas where we’re lacking, so I have a lot of thoughts in giving back to the amount of anticipation (Laughter).

Donghyun: After thinking that we were just trainees, we were given the chance to debut. In order to match the level of anticipation by fans, we are currently working hard in preparing. I want to show the side of myself that I wasn’t able to show on ‘Produce 101’. I think of it as a very thankful opportunity.

Q: I feel like a lot of things must have changed after ‘Produce 101’. ‘Produce 101’ probably gave an influence on this debut as well.

Youngmin: There are many idol seniors these days, but I believe that we’re rookies that are receiving a huge advantage from the start. I didn’t even think that we would be debuting while receiving this large amount of love, so it’s really an honor to be able to do an interview like this. I believe I need that much responsibility, so in order to not disappoint, I want to greet everyone with the least lacking side as much as I can even though I am lacking.

Q: The first male idols to come out from Brand New Music. Do you feel a burden from the title?

Youngmin: Even during ‘Produce 101’, I said in an interview that I felt burdened. Since it’s the first time our company is releasing an idol, I was nervous. But I think I was able to receive good results because many people saw us in a good light. But differing from ‘Produce 101’, we are debuting under Brand New Music’s name, so the feeling is different. Although the base is a hip-hop label, we are in the middle of preparing to show a bright energy of idols. As much as I feel burdened, I feel that I need to do just as well.

Q: If there’s a word of advice from your company seniors that you remember?

Donghyun: There are people who gave us help when we were preparing our album and preparing for the broadcast. During the broadcast, San E senior told us that we were going to do well and that we’re great kids and we would do well, so not to worry too much.

Q: You recently signed an exclusive contract that isn’t a trainee contract. Has anything changed?

Donghyun: They have always treated us well prior to the contract name being changed and afterwards too, so I’m always thankful. They treat us like family. If I had to point out something that changed, we weren’t able to discuss a lot with company staff. However, since we’re preparing for our debut, we share a lot of conversations and think of them comfortably.

Q: The two of you stated that you have very different tendencies, but what is the biggest difference?

Youngmin: Donghyun has a tendency for acoustic music while I prefer hip-hop and R&B. Even for clothes, Donghyun is a dandy style while I’m closer to a street look. However, we’re confident that we match better than anyone else. Similar points in personalities is created to fit with each other, but through that, I think we’re able to show a bright energy. Our different atmospheres mix well with each other and goes for a median.

Donghyun: We’re two people with different tendencies, but I think we’ll be able to include our usual sides and show everything. Although we have a hip-hop base, I think we’ll be able to show a variety of music styles, so I’m anticipating it a lot.

Q: You are going to competing with good-intentions with ‘Produce 101’ trainees.

Donghyun: Although it’s true we are competing, we all went through a lot, so I feel so happy when I hear that someone’s going to debut or when I hear good news. Although I was definitely work hard, I think I’ll be able to happily greet them if we are to meet on broadcasts.

Youngmin: I would be happy enough to meet outside of the broadcast, but I thought it would be really meaningful to meet on a music broadcast. The reason why is because we all have the same goal, so to meet on a music broadcast would mean that those dreams came true, so I think it would be good. But it’s true that the times will did overlap a lot.

Q: You must have some kind of desire towards the charting for this album.

Youngmin: These days, you can see up till 100th place on music charts. I think that it would be nice to at least be within that top 100. If I were to be a bit greedier, somewhere between 50th and 20th (laughter). Although, I definitely do wish for something high, I think that’s a good spot realistically. Of course, 1st place as well (laughter). I especially think it would nice if we could line-up on the charts together with ‘Produce 101’ friends.

Q: An area we should look out for on this album?

Youngmin: Although we enjoy hip-hop and our company has hip-hop as its base, we’re just idols rather than being hip-hop idols. So we want to show a variety of music. That’s why we’re participating in composing and writing lyrics as well. We want to show a variety of sides musically. After finishing ‘Produce 101’, I wanted to practice even more and show a prepared side, but fans seemed to be sad, so we came back quickly.

Q: Your company recently confronted a sasaeng fan problem.

Youngmin: To be honest, I felt very apologetic when they would come when we were eating or wait in front of the company for 12 hours. It would be nice if we could show our face just once in the middle, but we didn’t have an opportunity to leave the company once we entered. Also, since we’ve been doing recordings lately, it would end in the middle of the night, and fans would leave without being able to see us. Also, since the front of our company is a road and isn’t a sidewalk, we were worried, so my heart didn’t feel at ease.

Donghyun: Rather than feel uncomfortable about it, I was more worried.

Q: Through this debut, I feel like you will have opportunities to personally meet fans.

Youngmin: We haven’t heard any substantial information about music broadcasts yet. I want to do well and be able to go on music broadcasts and I really, really want to do fansignings. Fansignings are a chance to meet closely with fans. So I want to hold many fansignings and meet with fans. I also want to try holding a performance at a small performance hall. While conversing with fans.

Q: What kind of meaning does ‘national producer’ hold to you two?

Donghyun: To someone who was holding a dream of becoming a singing, I think it became a driving force. Although I was tired and sleepy during filmings, I was able to gain strength after reading fanletters. I thought that I needed to show a cooler and better side of myself for fans who were cheering me on like that.

Youngmin: If it weren’t for national producers, I really don’t think I would be able to be doing an interview like this. I probably would have been in the practice studio. Through this program, we’re living a 180 degree different life, so while being thankful, I really want to give back somehow. Because of that, I’m able to work harder too. That’s why I worked harder in preparing for this album as well.

Exercise >>> Donghyun: I did exercise because I really liked it. I like riding bicycles, and I have a twin brother, but he’s good at soccer. So I learned soccer from him and played soccer as well. I want to do it now as well, but since we’re busy, I haven’t really had a chance to exercise, so I’m sad.

Mukbang (Eating Broadcast) >>> Donghyun: Rather than say I eat a lot, I think people look at my eating in a good light. I also want to try guesting on an eating program. Something like ‘Nation’s Big Three’. Because I said I eat well, fans seemed to be curious about my eating.

Youngmin: When Donghyun first came into the company, he was on the chubbier side. But as he lost a lot of weight, I think his body type changed. Even if he gains weight, he doesn’t gain the amount of how much he eats. Also, if you see Donghyun eating, he eats it so deliciously that I end up wanting to eat too.

Studying >>> Youngmin: I liked science and math when I was younger, so I even thought about going down that path.

Donghyun: I thought that hyung was smart. He has a good memory. For example, since we’re trainees, if we’re to dance or learn something, he would memorize it right away. And he fixes machines well too (laughter).

Problematic Men >>> Youngmin: Ever since I was younger, I liked solving the Rubix Cube or logic problems. But a casting came in, so I talked about a lot of things during the meeting as well. The filming studio was more comfortable than I had worried about, so I think I was able to talk a lot. Since I normally like solving problems, the filming time felt short.
