Plant of the Day
Saturday 14 September 2024
Following the flat clusters of white flowers on Viburnum opulus (guelder rose, dogberry, water elder, cramp bark, snowball tree, European cranberry bush) in early summer bunches of translucent bright red fruits are produced and often persist into winter. The berries are an important food source for birds, including bullfinch and mistle thrush and the flowers are especially attractive to hoverflies.

Could I get some fruit knowledge (I don’t mind which kind)
This is a barberry bush
It's called that because it's got these wicked thorns
They can easily get an inch and a half long. Because of that, they're sold in garden centers as "security plants" to put under your windows and stop people getting in, as well as fall color. But! They also have
Oodles of berries!
Nowadays, most people leave them for the birds because those wicked thorns are hard to pick around if you like your blood to stay inside your body, but historically, they were an important source of fresh fruit throughout winter, especially in cold climates. They're still used in Persian cuisine, where they're dried (you can find them as zeresh if you're looking for a bag to taste). They taste like if a cranberry and a lemon had a baby.
The reason we no longer use them anymore is because rich people preferred exotic food that showed off their wealth and the poorer people were desperate to emulate them instead of preserving traditional food. It happened to a lot of European spices that have long since been forgotten, and you can track similar behaviors in food throughout Southeast Asia during colonization and Africa currently! But if you are trying some medieval cooking and it calls for orange or lemon, try using barberry instead and see the flavor transform!
(you can also find calafate, or Patagonian barberry items for sale, but they're a different species and are reported to taste like a cross between a huckleberry and a blackberry)

Moth of the Week
Hummingbird Clearwing Moth
Hemaris thysbe
The hummingbird clearwing moth is a part of the family Sphingidae or the hawkmoth family and was first described by Johan Christian Fabricius in 1775. The name Hemaris Thysbe is thought to be a reference to Thisbe, one of the doomed lovers in Ovid's Metamorphoses, due to the color of Thisbe’s blood-stained scarf and the maroon color of the moth. Additionally, the name hummingbird clearwing is due to the humming noise created by the rapid flapping of the moth’s transparent wings.
Description The hummingbird clearwing moth typically has an olive green and maroon back with a white or yellow and maroon underside. It has pale legs and no stripes, which is how you tell this moth apart from other in its genus, Hemaris. Its wings are transparent with a maroon border. After hatching, the hummingbird clearwing’s wings are a fully opaque dark red to black. Then the wing’s scales fall off when the moth takes flight, resulting in a clear wing with maroon borders and visible veins. However, a moth’s color and wing patterning varies between individual moths. For example, moths born in the south or later in the mating season are darker in color, and different populations have varying wing border shapes.
Average wingspan of 4.75 cm (≈1.9 in)
Up to 70 wingbeats per second
Can fly up to 12 mph (≈19.3 kph)
Diet and Habitat When in their caterpillar stage, these moths eat the leaves of cherry trees, European cranberry bushes, hawthorns, dogbane, honeysuckle, and snowberry bushes. Adult hummingbird moths feed on the nectar from flowers such as the Wild Bergamot and beebalm, red clovers, lilacs, phloxs, snowberry, cranberry, blueberry, vetch and thistle. The hummingbird clearwing prefers purple and pink flowers. They use their long proboscis or feeding tube to collect nectar from the flowers while flying in front of it like a hummingbird.
The average proboscis is 20 mm (≈0.8 in)
These moths are the most common in southern Ontario and the eastern United States. Their habitat ranges from Alaska to Oregon in the west and from Newfoundland to Florida in the east. They migrate northward from April to August and southward in late spring and the fall. They inhabit forests, meadows, and suburban gardens.
Mating The hummingbird clearwing has two broods a year in the south, but only one in the north. Mating takes place in May and June as females attract males with pheromones produce from glands at the tip of the abdomen. Female hummingbird moths will lay 200 eggs that will hatch in only 6 to 8 days.
Predators Hummingbird moths and caterpillars in general are hunted by birds, mantids, spiders, bats. To help protect themselves, these types of moths resemble hummingbirds or bees to fool predators.
Fun Fact Adults hummingbird clearwing moths are most active during the hottest parts of the day and have no hearing abilities due to a lack of “hearing organs.”

I pulled out a bunch of periwinkle that was over here and cut down a European cranberry bush and then it started raining before I could plant my American plum sapling but I made a digital collage of native plants for the woodland garden in my backyard. Probably won’t end up just like this but I gotta start somewhere!
#native plant gardening#not all these will be flowering at the same time this is just so when I do get some plants I have ideas of where to put them#maybe too much going on but whatever it would take me years to get to this point lol

Clearwing Hummingbird moths!!! These are a species of moth in the family Sphingidae. They bear striking resemblance to hummingbirds in both their wing flapping and their proboscis. Hemaris thysbe lives in second-growth forest, in meadows, and is commonly found in cultivated gardens of suburbia. H. thysbe is a migratory species, capable of traveling long distances. In single brood regions, adults are found throughout the summer. In the south, adults are present from March to June and from August to October.
As a caterpillar, H. thysbe feeds on cherry trees, European cranberry bush, hawthorns, dogbane, honeysuckle, and snowberry. It burrows into the soil to overwinter as a brown, hard-shelled pupa. In the late spring, it emerges as an adult moth. H. thysbe lays green eggs on the underside of plant leaves, which hatch in about a week. Development takes four weeks, after which the caterpillar spins a cocoon at ground level. Two to four weeks later a moth emerges for a second breeding cycle before summer's end in southern climates. In northern climates, H. thysbe has a single mating cycle per year.

For anyone who does not Live In The Bog, or alternately for the arachno-challenged among us (myself included), you may be pleased to learn that depending on where you live, you too may be able to grow a Highbush Cranberry shrub that does not In Any Way require a human being to be sacrificed to the bog spiders. Technically it's not a cranberry, but it is still similar in berry flavor profile, and also, hey! Fewer spiders.
why do they always show cranberries in thos big pits n its implied its wet and possibly swimmable. do cranberries really grow like that. wh

Talking About Plants and Crops In Thedas, How Non-European They Actually Are...
Okay, so yeah. I want to talk about this since I’ve seeing them a lot in the tags and also just in the Dragon Age fandom in general. A few have pointed out that corn (maize) and tomatoes are from the Americas (north and south).
I would like to add that some additional plants from the Americas:
Allspice, potatoes, squash, sunflowers, peanuts, bell peppers, cayenne (Antivan Pepper in Thedas), chili pepper, peppers, passion fruit, black walnut, cocoa/chocolate, vanilla, prickly pear/cactus pear, hawthorn berry, cosmos, marigolds, white water lilies, sweet onion, winterberry, frangipanis, and several types of beans (pinto, black, bush, navy, kidney, scarlet runner, and lima beans to be specific - Thedas is not too specific about beans). Along with several varieties (not all varieties though) of the following are native to the Americas: amaranth, cotton, wisteria, wild rice, strawberry, blueberry, blackberry, cranberry, elderberry, raspberry, plum, and cherry.
While collecting the flora and fauna, as well as food, it has become so abundantly clear that not only does Thedas have a whole lot of plants from the Americas but Asia, Africa, and the Middle East as well. (Before anyone says anything, yes, I am aware the Middle East is already considered part of Asia.)
Asian and Middle Eastern plants:
Radishes (china), rice, jasmine (Himalayas and China), water lilies, wisteria (several varieties), citron, coconut (particularly Indo-Malaya), cucumber (India), dates (Iraq), lettuce (though it was primarily cultivated in Egypt), eggplant (India), figs (Asiatic Turkey and Northern India), oranges, peach, pomegranate, spinach, turnip, bay leaves, ginger, star anise, almonds, cotton (some varieties), lotus (India and China), cardamom (south India), cinnamon, clove, licorice, mace (Indonesia), nutmeg (Indonesia), peppercorn (India), saffron, and the bradford pear.
African plants:
Coffee, acacia, melons, calla lilies, cotton (some varieties), and mustard.
I cannot stress enough how non-European centric Thedas is in regards to the plants and by extension the food they could end up creating. I really look forward to seeing it more in future installments of media as we’ve started seeing. But it has always boggled my mind when we see how European-centric the Free Marches are. I feel like they should be more of a blend of Antiva, Nevarra, Tevinter, and Southern Thedas/Orlais in the various city states instead of the staunch European foods we see. I would love to include Rivain, but we don’t really know the trade relationship Rivain has with the other countries outside of Varric’s beet plantation.
That said, I am in no way saying Thedas isn’t built off of the idea of a fantasy Europe, especially when they have fantasy French, Welsh accents, and a fantasy Italy that has the flavoring of Spanish accents and some words. But I find it so odd (I say odd but I mean boring and predictable) that they predominantly stuck with mostly US, Britain, French, and a sprinkling of Scandinavian, Italian, and German food in southern Thedas. So... I’ve branched out a lot to include other cuisines based on cultures that share similar climates, and I’m excited to share that with all of you later this week. I’m also going to make a master list of flora and fauna so it’s somewhere outside of the wiki Fauna and Flora page.

#i would like to say-#because so many first world people are incredibly disconnected from the way food gets to their stores and tables...#magic is stuff ONE cannot explain and finds fascinating. most people do not find the implications and plot holes of food supply#or making traditional dishes without modern convenience so they LITERALLY consider it so mundane as to not be a plot hole.#sufficiently advanced tech is indistinguishable from magic. and if one does not pause to wonder about how the FUCK we got these dishes#WHY do they have history? well one never extrapolates that.#like when people find out how you harvest cranberries.#the first person to make a cookie was the wizard of their village
Exactly.
TT I had someone argue that they don't know how to cook scrambled eggs so needs someone to do it for them instead of fucking sitting down and learning it. Fucking easier than a fried egg. And the whole "Can't identify a chicken from a rabbit" with the Haitian thing made me think, like WTF, you've never cooked a whole chicken before?
Do people really not know how to can food or freeze it? (Someone on a youtube channel said they hadn't figured out how to freeze pasta sauce yet (no meat, BTW, because meat keeps shorter in that state) , which BTW, blew my mind. I used to do that every year around August.)
Also, I kinda think if you're expending time and energy on magic, etc, like the energy to summon a strawberry and the time and effort, that has to be ten times greater than learning to fucking learn how to can a strawberry??? I learned how to do it with basic cooking skills pretty much on my first try. Sugar (we've gone over this)+water, clean the jars, heat them, put in strawberries and juice. Seal it tight. Done.
Do you know how much effort goes into a fucking cranberry in your life? And how utterly disgusting they usually are? Have you eaten one raw? (I don't recommend it, but it is an experience lol) But do you know what you have to do to create one? 100% serious here.
Cookie was trial and error, definitely. You have so many steps to get there. You have the wheat from West Asia. You have the Sugar from the tropics? Or at least honey from China. And the you have butter from western Asia. And you have vast trade routes to cover getting point A to Point B. The first cookie probably didn't have levening or only accidental little. Like freaking baking soda??? You know how baking soda is made? And then you also have the salt too. Persians made the first cookie in 7th century Iran. Blows your mind, that Ancient Egyptians weren't eating cookies.
I'm not saying that everything centers around food, but I was reminded when my relatives said major supply chain had food recalls for E. coli, how ignorant of how long it takes to make dishes from the old days.
Those grains needed to be processed. But are you making flour for your cookie? Those ropes you blithely put into your books which are cut had to be made by hand. And you get a taste of this when you do the older slower crafts how much cost and a big deal it was.
The silk harvest was poor because the mulberry bushes weren't doing well this year? You're shit out of luck because that silk is going to be reserved for the Emperor now.
I have a large post I'm nursing on clothing, and I have to say when people talk about making a 15th century European dress in a week in Historical or Other World Fantasy Fiction, I cry inside. I've hand sewn dresses that are much simpler. And it took 2 weeks. But sometimes it takes years for me to gather the materials. Corsets require boning. And where the fuck is your sewing machine? There is none? Welp, what do you mean you're having a single dressmaker make it in a week? It took FOREVER for lace to be made for Queen Victoria's dress. And Laura Wilder stated she could not finish the basic basting even with an early foot-driven sewing machine for her wedding. You're dreaming.
This is why reusing, upcycling, knowledge and Heirlooms are even more critical in pre-industrial societies. You can't absolutely can't, just go to the store and get it. You've likely sweated your ass off spinning that yarn/fiber 24-7 with a drop spindle to the point that if you have a spare minute, you're doing it otherwise your family has nothing to wear. And then you have to get it weaved. And then there is excess fabric. But are you going to waste that excess fabric after spending a year or two with the other women spinning that thread? Absolutely not. Work it for purses and patches, etc. Make the trimmings into paper.
Rags and Bone man again. Look him up. I swear you won't be disappointed. (There was also a person who collected people's pee in Medieval times. It really was don't waste anything).
See... you have to break the industrial mindset.
BTW, there's heavy debate over the terminology of First World, Global South, etc, so I try to avoid it, but this is more a note of acknowledgement rather than a shunning moment. Not trying to demonize or hunt you, trying to diffuse conflict.
Anyway, as the larger doc said, I'm going to effing chase you if you're serving ice cream in summer without electricity or some means of freezing it in a controlled way and you have no refrigerator. (There are methods, but you have to research those)
Slight note about the system of food.
'cause adding it to the large doc might crash my computer?
I've realized that though historical fiction minds this more when set in pre-industrial times, that often fantasy set in agricultural societies doesn't seem to do this, though it should.
So I'll give you an example...
Almost everything in Korean food is centered and bred for two things: Kimchi and soy sauce.
But what you don't realize in your industrialized state how freaking long it takes to make these things and how much planning is involved and how much you have to mind the seasons in order to make it correctly.
Kimchi:
Baekchu (or other vegetables) that's often harvested in fall.
The salt, which was traditionally sea salt was harvested in the spring and summer months.
Garlic is a spring to mid summer crop.
The sweet rice that goes into winter kimchi takes a ton of work to make and can take from Spring to fall.
The fish sauce that goes into Kimchi that helps preserve it for over a year, takes and ENTIRE YEAR to make. Yes, a year. You really, really have to plan on that. And what do you do if the fishing is poor for that year?
Spring onions are faster to grow, but you still have to time it for the fall kimchi making.
The fish are seasonal. For example, Yellow Corvina is taken in Korea in the spring. Shrimp in the summer (June), and anchovies in early spring to fall.
Your timing has to be impeccable and you need an entire year to plan this one dish.
Meanwhile, you, industrialized person, take for granted that you can get fish sauce any time you like and can pour it over kimchi.
In fantasy this could add flavor to your fantasy make up, if your character can only get this dish once a year. It can add political unrest (What do you mean the salt harvest was poor and we're left with the shitty metallic salt), because your characters in an agricultural society will be subject to weather changes, which you get when reading historical fiction and so on. Three seasons of poor harvest, daaaamnn... the people might overthrow their government. There might be new religions that pop up, there might be uprisings because the King and Queen are eating feasts every day while the peasants are eating things that are empty calories.
What I'm saying is that you can't be too entrenched into industrial mindset if you're not writing an industrial setting.
That orange is seasonal and only comes about in a connected system that has winter and a warmer climate.
Maybe there are key foods for your climate that are highly treasured or sought after. Mandarins once were. Cacao. Think a bit about those things and how it might interact with the larger world. When does your plant mature and when can it be harvested? is it different from different climates? There's wars that have been fought over food. (Tea, famously, at least a few times).
A staple crop failing is going to have devastating consequences.
And yet, often in fantasy, I often see people going, ya know what I can eat in the dead of winter, strawberries. Do we have greenhouses? No. Did we have freezers? No. But you know what my character is eating? A strawberry. Yeah, think about that. Strawberries don't preserve well. So plan out the timing of your dishes a bit (to the climate and subsistence system) and it can give a bit of background worldbuilding to your dishes and food.
I do have to say that the small mentions from Rings of Power n what's in season or not and why kinda made me feel like the world and the traveling was more "real" with the Harfoot. There's small references to fall v. spring crops.
#So much depends on crops like not being naked in the winter#CIS men should learn how to cook too#Learn a little about history and food systems?#Magic should be reserved for special stuff#Break that industrial mindset

Hemaris thysbe, the hummingbird clearwing, is a moth of the family Sphingidae (hawkmoths). Beating its wings rapidly, H. thysbe hovers to collect nectar from a variety of flowers. The combination of its appearance and its behavior commonly leads to it being confused with a hummingbird or bumblebee. Hemaris thysbe is found in a large portion of North America, with a range extending from Alaska to Oregon in the west and from Newfoundland to Florida in the east. It is a migratory species and is most common in southern Ontario and the eastern United States. As a caterpillar, it feeds on honeysuckle, dogbane, and several types of fruit trees.
Coloration varies between individuals, but typically the moth is olive green and burgundy on its back, and white or yellow and burgundy on the underside. When it first hatches, the wings of H. thysbe are dark red to black. As it begins to fly, scales fall off leaving a mostly clear wing with reddish-brown borders and veins. It has light-colored, often yellow, legs and a lack of striping on the underside which distinguishes this moth from other Hemaris species. The antennae of H. thysbe are thicker at their base and are curved at the ends. Unlike most moths, the species lacks hearing organs.
Adults are most active during the hottest parts of the day, but remain active until sunset. H. thysbecollects nectar from a wide variety of flowers using a long (19–21 millimetres [0.75–0.83 in]) proboscis while hovering above the bloom. It shows a preference for pink and purple flowers, moving rapidly from one flower to the next. The moth is considered to be a hummingbird mimic and is frequently mistaken for the bird or for a bumblebee.
It has minimal economic impact to humans, acting neither as a crop pollinator nor as a pest. The moth does, however, pollinate several cultivated flowers, and is the primary pollinator for some species of orchid. H. thysbe is not endangered or threatened.
