ok so mermaids probably exist in the luca universe. If sea monsters can, so can mermaids
but not the usual disney mermaids like ariel, in fact Alberto and Luca scoff at the really inaccurate portrayal of mermaids in the little mermaid
the mermaids here are just like sirens from folklore, you know, eating human men and all
they rarely try to hunt other creatures like the sea monsters or any other fish, but there’s multiple stories from across the ocean of sirens stealing sea monsters’ babies and either plucking off their scales to renew their own tail, or raising them as their own by locking them away from the rest of the world.
The reason sirens might go for the latter motive when kidnapping a sea monster baby would be to take their soul when they turn 21, and raising them makes it easier with less resistance from their victim. Sirens and mermaids don’t have souls, so when they die they just become sea foam and cease to exist. But sea monsters do have souls, and they get to keep themselves intact and choose their life after death, which sirens are extremely jealous of. That’s why they like stealing kids to take their souls.
Luca remembers a story his mom told him of when a siren actually tried to kidnap him as a baby, but she attacked her and saved Luca before the siren could run off with him. He doesn’t believe it, but even if it’s just a story, it’s still pretty terrifying to him
Sirens also like to scare and bully other sea creatures because they’re a bunch of mischievous pranksters that have nothing better to do when they’re not busy being pure fucking evil
one time, when luca was a little younger, he had the misfortune of being the victim of one siren’s prank, which involved her pretending to be a human and even using a real harpoon for good measure, cackling when she got luca terrified.
his mom found them a few moments after and shooed the siren away, all while comforting her son and saying it wasn’t a real human
Alberto’s been jumpscared by a siren before but he just got pissed off because he actually did get scared by her, and promptly chased her away
Every sea monster who lives in the ocean and even in some freshwater areas know how awful sirens/mermaids are, but they’re even more upset when they learn that humans have portrayed them as these little angels while sea monsters get the short end of the stick.
Luca and Alberto make it their little side mission to correct this however, along with Giulia who agrees with them after getting a little spook from a siren lurking on the shore near her

What kind of pranks does Alberto often pull on Ercole whenever the latter dares to talk ill about Luca?
One time, when Luca and Alberto still went to the same school as Ercole, Alberto put a dead fish in Ercole’s desk to make him stink after the older boy made fun of Luca for smelling odd (Luca’s parents cook very unique meals that taste very good, but definitely smell different than everyone else's packed lunch). Alberto made damn sure that for the rest of high school, people associated the smell of old fish with Ercole.
That was the main prank though. Otherwise, if Ercole started messing with Luca, Alberto would just try to fight him. Luca usually stopped him in time, but sometimes he was just left finding Alberto and Ercole in the principles office, both sporting black eyes while trying to glare each other to death across the room.
Ercole kind of fell off the face of the earth after he graduated. He didn't bother Luca, Giulia or Alberto again until he decided to up the anti and become a whole dang supervillian.

I've added chapter 1 of my ongoing Luca series to Wattpad-a site I haven't used in YEARS! Just trying to share it. Luca was one of those movies that've stuck with me and I'm enjoying writing this ongoing story of friendship and betrayal and secrets. I originally wrote it on Archive Of Our Own and now it'll be on Wattpad as well!

ok luca fandom hear me about
luberto tangled au
ercole is his usual asshole self, bullying kids and showing off his trophies and vespa, but he knows he’s getting old. He sees new wrinkles in places that were smooth before, and usually most people wouldn’t think too much of it when they’re getting older. But he’s terrified.
Meanwhile, below the surface, Queen Daniela and King Lorenzo had their first child. During the pregnancy Daniela had gotten sick but was cured by a rare seaweed that grows once every blue moon, and Lorenzo was able to find it and cure her.
As a result, Luca, their baby, had extremely vibrant scales that glowed even in the dark, and were very colorful even for a Royal’s scales. His parents just assumed that for some reason his inherited the glowing aspect from his uncle who lives in the deep and thought nothing of it, celebrating their boy’s birthday by releasing bioluminescent sea lanterns throughout the kingdom.
Ercole, while driving back to his house on his vespa, sees this phenomenon and becomes curious, slowing down to look at the lights closely.
When he get home, he waits until midnight to head back out again, grabbing his harpoon, swimsuit and his snorkel in case it was ‘sea monster’ business so he could win the reward on the wanted flyers.
He dove into the ocean, swimming down to the ocean floor, and was shocked to find not only a town, but a palace down in the water.
Attracted to the lavishness of it, Ercole swam down and entered through one of the windows, which was coincidentally the nursery where Luca was sleeping.
He sees Luca, and at first plans to kill him with the harpoon, but decides to kidnap him instead, swimming quickly away while Luca’s parents try to chase him down and Luca cries.
Ercole takes Luca to his house and sees him transform into a human looking person, which surprises him more. He splashes water on him to revert him back and plucks out one of his tiny scales using the harpoon, which makes him cry even more, tears spilling out of his eyes. Ercole sees that when his tears reached his injured spot, the scale was healed and just like new.
He realized that he could use this as a way to solve his aging “problem”, and after searching, finds an abandoned tower on an isolated island (in this au Alberto never lived there and instead lives in Portorosso with Massimo and Giulia)
Slowly but surely, Ercole rebuilds the tower and locks Luca in there, pretending to be his older brother to use Luca’s healing powers for his own gain.
He tells Luca that he was cursed to turn into a sea monster whenever he touched water or sang his healing incantation, and that’s why Ercole kept him in isolation to protect others from having to see his “horrifying face”. He uses a lot of tactics to make Luca insecure in himself and thus never leave, and they unfortunately work for a while.
But Luca is still curious, especially of the glowing lights that illuminate from the ocean every year on his birthday. The story progresses as usual, Alberto finding his tower, etc etc, except Luca doesn’t lose his healing powers at the end.
There’s two ways Luca can heal people: through singing a healing incantation (the usual way he does it) or using his tears, which he does at the end

Gabriel’s (missing) cross
Let’s put everything we know about that spooky statue of the Archangel Gabriel in one thread to make the conversation about its possible meaning as a Good Omens 3 clue more structured. Starting off with the relevant part of the official commentary from X-Ray:
Douglas Mackinnon got one thing wrong in his part of the interview — Gabriel wasn’t carved by “some guy in Italy,” but a British sculptor and prop maker David Field working as a part of the team at 3DEye in London.
Technically speaking, it’s a gorgeous piece of hand-carved expanded polystyrene with a clay sculpted head on top of it — even if the Archangel’s smug likeness isn’t that pleasant to look at, all things considered. The scenic artists from 3DEye made it look like stone afterwards.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The body itself took ten days to sculpt and is a faithful copy of the famous statue on Ponte Sant'Angelo in Rome called Angel with the Cross by Ercole Ferrata. It stands on the inscription “Cuius principatus super humerum eius” (“Whose government shall be upon His shoulder”, Isaiah 9:16), and this quote makes much more sense for Gabriel than the cross in his hands. The usual iconography of the Archangel uses a trumpet or a white lily instead.
Ponte Sant'Angelo was originally used to expose the heads of those sentenced to death — each of the angelic statues on it carry Arma Christi, the Instruments of the Passion. Like the Second Coming, what seems to be a hopeful message to the Chosen Ones can also be a warning for the others.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The statue of Gabriel, first shown in full in the cemetery scene of the Good Omens 2 title sequence, reappears at the very end as a part of the bridge leading to the biggest Easter egg — at least according to Peter Anderson, the animator behind it — which is the lift in the background, implying how we’re getting closer towards the Second Coming. Notice how the cross broke down in half at some point between these two scenes!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And it disappears in the plot as well: Gabriel’s memory depicts it only from his point of view, with the camera deliberately moving slightly to the right and stopping at his eye level. The centered, establishing shots show the statue with empty hands as a bookend.
I believe that this cross is meant to serve as a foreshadowing, a reminder of the absolution of sins and eternal life through Christ’s sacrifice and Second Coming. We see it only through Gabriel and Aziraphale’s eyes — when Beelzebub looks at the statue, the cross is not there.
Tumblr media
As seen in the BTS photos and videos, it’s not an editing error, but a deliberate positioning of the physical props on set. The cross was clearly meant to be a removable part of the statue and displayed in a specific way to convey a message to the audience.
The question remains: is it a reassurance, something to look forward to, or maybe rather a warning?
Not helpfully at all, the traditional use of angelic imagery in Christian cemeteries matches both interpretations.
