The degree to which I hate Mary Winchester right now is... I won't say unparalleled, but it's pretty damn potent.

Sam: I know, but it's Mom! I mean, whatever she was doing, she must've had a good reason. Dean: A good reason? A good reason for working with those ass clowns? Sam: Look, I hear you, all right? But – but at the end of the day, she's family. We owe it to her to at least –

The sheer amount of leniency being given to Mary here is so damn stupid. "She's our Mom" --- since when?!?! She stumbled back into life a few months back, leaves almost immediately, and promptly starts lying/working with torturers. Yes, amazing parenting. (Also, the argument that "we're biologically related to x so we owe them forgiveness for anything and everything" is a highly questionable one.)

And then there's the fact that Mary is consistently trivializing motherhood to being the standard role of caretaking. It's not like she came back and they immediately tried to shove her into an apron and relegate her to the kitchen. She tells them she can't cook? That Dean's memories of her meatloaf are just memories of grocery store takeout? There's a brief moment of adjustment, and then things go right back to normal. She cuts her hair? Great! Awesome practicality! (The only reason this goes sour is because she decides to go on a solo hunt with her bags already packed as a way of leaving without having to tell them she was leaving.)

Mary hasn't been a mother since she came back. She leaves the second the going gets tough, lies and manipulates her way around, and acts as though she deserves the Mother of the Year award in the process. (And, btw, this has barely even addressed the fact that she's working with BMOL, which has so much wrong with it that it should be a whole other post... broken ribs and burned feet is only scratching the surface.)

Regardless, it's not stupid or unfair or selfish for either brother to want their mom to actually be a mom, and it sickens me that the show (Mary, Sam, Dean, some combination of those, etc.) has decided that the brothers owe some deference/apology to their mom for acting like an atrocious parent.

If the spnepisodebracket craze has shown us anything, it's that the supernatural fanbase is extremely divided, with the lowly sam stan seemingly at the bottom of the pile. sam is always last in polls, so this is a bracket for the 10% or so who always votes for him. because yeah, there's 327 episodes of Supernatural, but how many are popular because of a dean or destiel moment? how many good episodes are drowned out because they focus on sam?

i've chosen, with some crowdsourced peer review (special thanks to @spneveryseason, @suncaptor, and @ambersock!) 125 episodes that are Sam Relevant. Some are extremely sam-centric, some just have a shot where sam looks like he's being crucified that gives me brain worms -- i tried to be generous about it to keep a relatively even seasons distribution! matchups will be random and polls will last 24 hours each. in the tradition of @spnepisodebracket (who this is obviously inspired by and would not be possible without!) i'll try to rb a gifset for every episode in the poll!

a final note: no this is not that serious but the criteria for voting here should be how good the episode is as a SAM episode, not as anything else, so please vote accordingly! i am making this for people who actually enjoy sam and if that is not you, then this is not the poll for you!

Thoughts here instead of the tags because I ran on even by my own standards.

There isn't a lot of Finn in this episode, but the changes between the script and aired version are interesting to me!!

The first two gifs are cut dialogue over the scene as-aired, which is all science. The brother reference threw me because I’m sure the only time he's mentioned on-air is in "The Last Ride", right at the end of the run. But 16yo Finn somehow both trying to impress and briefly unaware she's being hit on by her older brother's friends is v cute???

The dialogue with Moreno only changes slightly, from “My place sounds good to me. […] You make the breakfast this time”, to “Okay, so we'll do it at your place tonight, and um, I'll call you if I'm going to be late”. It’s only a subtle shift, and the tone is still outrageously flirtatious, but it’s a degree less personal/more transactional, and I feel like it helps in establishing the nature of the relationship. We know from “Homecoming” that Finn is in a ‘sneaking-out-in-the-middle-of-the-night’, “it’s so much hotter when you don’t talk” place when it comes to relationships, and I just don't see her—at this point, anyway—as willingly inviting someone into her space and making them breakfast in the morning.

AND THEN THE HENRY SCENE. The difference here is:

Finn: "Athrok the Conqueror". That dragon movie. You know it's not in theatres anymore, and I'm pretty sure it didn't come out on DVD because I wanted to see that. Henry: Wait, you-you like fantasy movies? Finn: Yeah! I saw Lord of the Rings like forty times. Henry: That's awesome.

Script:

Finn: "Athrok the Conqueror"? Cheesy fantasy movie, right? Not in theaters anymore. Not on DVD yet. (OFF Henry, admits) Guy I'm seeing digs dragons. And I dig him.

The whole tone is different, shifting from a reluctant admission that she's researched lame movies for a guy she's into, to genuine enthusiasm for something she's passionate and unashamed about. Love that for her!!

Finn being a fantasy nerd has been part of my understanding of who she is for so long, that to see that was originally written as 'liking Moreno so much she'll research dragon movies for him' FELT WRONG. It's only a few lines but it's such a cute scene and I'm very glad they changed it, for two reasons really. One being that Finn and Henry are adorable in s12??? This woman only moves to Vegas after 12x14, and by 12x20, she's spent every night for two weeks at the batting cages with Henry, helping him practice his swing. I ADORE HER. There's also a very sweet cut scripted scene in 12x15 that goes:

THEY'RE JUST CUTE OKAY. So yeah. In the aired version she's seen Lord of the Rings like 40 times, and Henry thinks that's awesome, AND SO DO I.

(Also, I think it just feeds in so much to Finn being a people-pleaser. She gives people these little parts of herself that appeal most to them, so with Henry she loves fantasy movies, with Super Dave it's like START THE ELITE CHEF GROUP CHAT RN, and with Sara she loves crossword puzzles!! And those are all true things, they're not invented for her audience, but they're also not all of her. Because it takes time and/or being Russell to get the Full Julie Finlay Experience.)

Anyway I've spent longer thinking about THREE MINOR SCRIPT CHANGES than Lisa spent filming her scenes for this episode, so that's super chill.

I'm not quite clear on why Sam thinks that the killing of the Alpha vampire was a good thing.  Indeed, I feel like killing him was a monumentally stupid decision, to be honest.  I mean, I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t fully remember everything about his character — that was, after all, five to seven seasons ago for me — but he’s repeatedly shown one of the most reasonable bad guys in the entire show, and remarkably pragmatic to boot.

Take hunting, for example.  He genuinely cares about his vampire ‘children’, and yet he also recognizes that people are going to fight back against being killed.  He recognizes that hunting is part of the natural order — a sped-up version of survival of the fittest, one might say — and he accepts it.  He doesn’t attack hunters just for the sake of attacking hunters; he just lets things shake out as they will.  The only reason he comes out of his quiet lifestyle in season 12 is because the vampires are being butchered — mercilessly, and without any regard for character or actions — and that upsets the natural order of things, so he has to deal with that.  Otherwise, the man legit just wants to be left alone.

And that’s leaving aside the fact that Sam is once again driving off a high-powered ally.  I mean, here — like with Crowley at the tail end of season 10 — you’ve got a very influential, powerful character who is willing to work with the Winchesters in certain circumstances (e.g. when the Alpha helped with the Leviathans) up until Sam decides to kill (or try to kill) them.  I don’t think there was even much to be gained by killing the Alpha vamp; it’s not like he was trying to mobilize all of the vampire factions against anyone, and he was living quietly enough that no hunters tracked him down, so clearly he’s not being especially antagonistic.

Rather, this has a great potential to backfire.  Admittedly, most of the vampires in the area got wiped out by BMOL, but I’m pretty sure they said they were focused on the midwest region, so there are other vampire nests out there — I’m looking at you, s15e20 — and antagonizing them by killing their sire seems like a really stupid idea?  With a massive likelihood of causing a lot of lives to be lost?

Idk, I’m just… really not seeing how the cost-benefit analysis would at all support killing the Alpha.

12x14 I assume that I have already written about this back in the day, but I think it’s worth noting again how Dean and Sam deal with Mary’s “betrayal” as an unit and how they deal with it as individuals. Sam and Dean are of course upset that she lied to them (though I’m kind of confused what Mary’s “I’m sorry you had to find out like this” was supposed to mean. She volunteered the information after all.) but their objection to her working with the BMOL are mostly “WE have history, WE don’t trust them”. Which means that they expect Mary to align with their sense of morals, instead of allowing her to make her own choices.

Also, Dean is on Sam’s case because he’s not “picking a side”, neither when Dean’s showing Mary the cold shoulder, nor when Dean was showing Cas the cold shoulder. Why would Sam have to pick a side (and I’m sure Dean means “be on my side, feel the same thing I feel, be an extension of my emotions”)? Stupid commentary from Mr. Winchester about Sam dealing with Mary’s betrayal the way that works for him.

You know... at the end of the day, the Winchesters are all the same X3 Sometimes I think Sam’s the only sane one, but then I think about the chaos he gets up to, so nah.

So, Mary tells Sam that the reason she is working with the BMOL is to create a world where Sam doesn’t have to hunt. When Sam tells her that he CHOSE to hunt, she doesn’t even seem to listen. She reaffirms that a world without monsters will undo Sam’s choice. I just... Why does everyone tell Sam that Sam wants to get out of the life? Sam doesn’t want out of the life, he has chosen hunting again and again! Just let that guy hunt :/ (Looking at you, finale.)

I guess this episode seems to be about people telling other people who they are supposed to be... And, what maybe annoys me, the characters fitting themselves into those ideas. Why are we having Dean reduced to being angry, needing to control Sam, needing to punch something, needing a drink, getting home from getting a drink to need more drinks, allowing in Ketch because he brings drinks, listening to Ketch telling him that he’s a killer, going out to work a case with Ketch because there are vamps to kill (I thought we don’t work with the BMOL, Dean?), taking on a nest of 10 vampires with a guy you don’t know or trust (why? what point are you proving?)

Also... EH? Sam says he wants in, because the BMOL are changing the world and the alpha Vampire is dead. I don’t know if maybe Sam missed the episode, but it was Sam who killed him... Sure, they located and had Mary steal the Colt but apart from that...? Hmpf.

This is just a weird episode... (As the whole BMOL plot tends to be, partially also because it leaves no more nuance that the show has established - now all monsters are bad again, now all monsters must be killed. It’s just a matter of how - Dean, to show that he’s a good guy, stopped Ketch from beating up the vampire girl, offering a quick death instead. The Winchester’s moral compass allows and approves of torture and suffering, but when others do it it’s usually suspect.)

Anyway, I’m sure you could dig a bit and find some redeeming things about this whole arc but I’ve not really enjoyed the second half of this season all that much.

Names & surnames - graphs

This time I want to analyze the ways Penelope and Luke call each other, using the graphs, just because I like it and I pay for the original Microsoft 365 Office, so why not? N.B.: I will consider only the moments when they are both present, with few exceptions.

LUKE

As you can see, Penelope likes to call him by his name and Newbie (but also with a lot of different surnames...), a little less by his last name, and rarely with his full name.

Because, for example, her favorite way to call him, in S14, when they are "friends", is just Luke. She used it just once, in S12, two in S13 (one with a surname, Cool Hand Luke, and another with Lisa). Just one time even in S15, while 3 in S16, but in fact the times are 5, because in the first episode of CME, she called him Luke three times.

Penelope calls Luke "Alvez" six times, considered all the seasons. Half of them in S12. Not so weird, because she was in the "I need to know you better - but I'm not sure I want it" phase.

Just in S15 she calls him using his full name, and in both occasions, it's not in a serious way, but as a joke or flirting.

We already talk enough (really? Not sure) about "Newbie". When he asked her to find new material (12x16) she stopped to used it, until last episodes of S15, but without the same "energy". The other surnames are just too special to ruin them with an analysis.

PENELOPE

It's clear that the most used is just Garcia. The reason is simple: Luke calls her in that way when they are talking about work, with or without other members of BAU, especially in the first seasons. But he likes the sound of her name on his lips, he did it six times. He called her with full name only two times, in the "middle" seasons. Luke has less creativity than her, because he created just four surnames in e episodes at all.

As we did with Luke, it's interesting to take a look of the thing during the seasons.

We already said that: Luke likes to pronounce her name, but he did it almost once for season, with the expection of S15, when he never said it, and the last (CME), when he used it 3 (4) times. It's the same than for Penelope, it's clear that after their date, something changed, between them, and it reflects also on the way they call each other.

Garcia is the most used, for working reason, but, as you can see, it decreases gradually, season by season. In the last, CME, it's just a quarter of the total, while in S12 was almost three-quarter.

Luke called her by her full name just two times, and both before Lisa.

Lastly, he used different way to call Penelope, i.e., surnames, only in S12, and always as an alternative way of flirting.
