Trying harder to make life easier with Alexa
A little over a year ago I read a Bloomberg article that Alexa use had stalled and that users weren't adopting/integrating Alexa as quickly as Amazon hoped. The article cited internal Amazon data stating, "There have been years when 15% to 25% of new Alexa users were no longer active in their second week with the device." Another Amazon document said that new Alexa users discover half the features they will ever use within 3 hours of activating the device. Beth and I fall into that category... we mostly ask Alexa to tells us the weather forecast and occasionally ask other questions which she occasionally answers correctly. We also have an Echo device in the pantry and use Alexa to add items to a shopping list. When we lived in the apartment we used smart plugs and Alexa voice commands to control a few lamps. I also used smart plugs and Alexa routines to schedule/automate the Christmas lights at our old house.
When building our new house I tried to make it as future proof as possible. We have robust wifi to connect smart appliances (range, microwave, refrigerator, dishwasher, washer, and dryer) as well as Liftmaster garage doors, Moen shower valves, a Ring security system and Lutron lighting. When we moved in, I took the time to connect about half of these items to their 'brand' app but didn't bother with many others. According to the WSJ, I'm not alone. In a WSJ article last month LG Electronics said that less than half their smart appliances stay connected to the internet; Whirlpool said that more than half remain connected but declined to be more specific. This shouldn't be surprising because the process of connecting an appliance isn't very intuitive and it differs from one brand to the next.
The ROI on the effort to connect the devices isn't strong, especially if it is difficult to to do. For most appliances (washer, dryer, refrigerator, etc.) the primary benefit is notification of required maintenance, faults or malfunctions and limited diagnostic abilities. The refrigerator will also inform me if the door is left open, the dishwasher will remind me that the rinse agent is low, the dryer will tell me if the exhaust is clogged and I like seeing the notifications about my oven timer because I usually can't hear it.
Using Alexa to do things is even more difficult. First you have to add the appropriate 'Skill', oAuth into the app of the appliance, then discover the devices and build a routine. Creating the routine frequently requires an additional step of creating a 'Scene' in the subsidiary app, then discovering this scene in Alexa when you connect the skill. This isn't insurmountable for a Gen-Xr or younger, but again it isn't always clear that the juice is worth the squeeze. I made the effort, however and now I can start the dishwasher from my bed before I go to sleep (provided I already added detergent) and find out how much time is left on the dryer. Surprisingly, my life doesn't feel that much richer.
There are opportunities for complex, higher value Alexa routines but these are even more difficult. Leaving the house is a good example. With a great deal of effort, I've enabled the following:

This was difficult because Liftmaster is trying to sell their own Alexa -type hardware so they refuse to integrate with Alexa. Likewise, Alexa refuses to disarm or change armed mode of Ring with a routine (even though they are sister companies). Solving both those problems required use of an intermediary Simple Commands/IFFT skill to backdoor the solution. I think this routine could get even better if I add a command to turn down the heat/ac and turn off recirc of the tankless water heaters but I will need to add wireless control to the Rinnai water heaters.
Having said that the Alexa Leaving and Arriving routines really are helpful and I like scheduling Alexa to automatically close the garage doors every night at 10 in case they've accidentally been left open.
When my Dad died last year I bought several Echos, smart plugs and a Ring system and installed them for my Mom. She loves being able to tell Alexa to turn on lights, show her who is at the front door and play Spotify. She couldn't have set up the system, but she is good at using it and that's what counts.

"What part of the plan is this, sir?" Barton asked once they were sure the security team they were avoiding had moved on. They were currently tucked under some underbrush behind a fallen log; they would have to move to better cover soon. That was a relatively simple matter, as long as they avoided detection; luckily there was no electronic surveillance beyond the target facility's fenced perimeter. Unfortunately, the plan had not involved entering the forest surrounding the facility at all. The whole thing was fubar.
"The part where we abort the mission and another team attempts to retrieve the intel at a later date." Phil began to crawl backwards out of the brush and Barton followed.
"But our ride won't be here until tomorrow, huh?" Barton mumbled. Phil wasn't sure if he was supposed to hear or not, but there was no point in pretending.
"That's correct, Barton."
"So we're sleeping in the dirt tonight." He sounded resigned yet cheerful. It was only the third time Phil had worked with Barton, and so far they were three for three for ops going south in mildly infuriating, but not truly dangerous, ways. Every time, Barton took things in stride. Phil appreciated it; there were plenty of otherwise good agents who would already be complaining about sleeping rough.
They trekked through the trees, stepping carefully over roots and circling tangles of bushes, heading in the general direction of their pickup site. They didn't talk much; the noise they were making as they walked could be explained away as a deer or a bear - voices, not so much. Phil's stomach rumbled; he resigned himself to a long, cold, hungry night.
A ration bar appeared at his shoulder. "Don't worry, it's one of the fake chocolate ones," Barton murmured.
"Thank you." Phil took the ration bar and ate it slowly as they went on. The fake chocolate ones were the best of the bunch, but the bar they were clearing to claim that title was on the ground.
They reached their destination as dusk fell. Summer was just turning to all, so the forecast had promised cool temperatures, but not freezing. Phil still wasn't looking forward to it.
"Lovely accommodations you've arranged for us," Barton said with a grin.
"Next time I'll book the Ritz, just for you," Phil replied. Barton was definitely growing on him.
"A guy like me at the Ritz? Ramada's high-class enough for me." Barton made himself comfortable at the base of a tree and pulled out two ration bars from a cargo pocket.
"Noted." Phil settled next to Barton, and Barton handed one of the bars to him. "I'm glad one of us is prepared. I don't have anything more useful than a ballpoint pen in my pockets."
"Agent Coulson, less than perfectly prepared for any situation? The baby agents will be heartbroken." Barton chuckled and let his head fall back against the tree trunk.
"I'm not sure my reputation will ever recover."
"Don't worry, sir, your secret is safe with me."
"I appreciate that, Barton." Phil wrapped his arms around himself. In addition to not having anything useful for spending the night in the forest, he was not dressed for the occasion in the slightest. It was time for the cold part of their long night to begin. At least he wasn't hungry.
Barton pulled a package out of another pocket. "Blanket?"
Phil took the package. "A survival blanket? Got a rabbit in there, too?"
"No, but if you have a coin, I can make it come out of your ear." Barton produced yet another survival blanket from his pocket. Phil wouldn't be surprised if he pulled out a tent next. He unfolded his blanket and wrapped up. Barton quickly did the same.
"Why do magicians always ask for a coin? What if nobody has one?"
"There's always someone with a coin. And they ask because who wants their money covered in someone's earwax? That's just gross."
Phil snorted a laugh. "I'll take first watch if you want to get some rest, Barton."
"There's a few good vantage points, if you-"
"We should stay close, share our body heat."
"That does sound better," Barton wriggled down until he was laying next to Phil, who was still sitting up. "Forget Ramada, I'd take the jankiest Rodeway over this."
Phil agreed. "Get some sleep, Barton. I'll wake you in a few hours." Barton went to sleep, in the way of experienced soldiers across the world, and Phil settled in for his hours of boredom (if he was lucky). Barton was really starting to grow on him. Phil wouldn't mind spending more fubar'd missions with him.

Before you know it, on 27 August, Mars puts the meadows of Virgo in the rearview mirror and enters Libra. Some may declare this an era of peace, pacification, negotiation and diplomacy. On the polarity of extreme optimism these qualities may emerge... typically after the results of Mars doing Mars things while romping through the sign opposite one of the signs he rules.
Actually, there is a level of compatibility with Mars in Libra. The sign of the scales, implying justice, equalization and fairness honestly loves a good fight. Within the alleged fondness for confrontation inherent in Libra, the end game of securing a valid and appropriate place for all to exist and with adequate manifestation of needs is held as the justifying banner for any and all tense engagement.
Will global negotiations for peace break out or will the ominous build up of Wagner forces in Belarus be a thing? Can the actors and writers work it out with studio heads and streamer bosses? Can each person in the world actually secure more of what they want (and crave) during the weeks of this transit? Given other Martian transits in play and with those planetary engagements properly applied, the forecast leans toward the affirmative.
Early on in the Mars in Libra era, on 9 September, Mars moves into exact conjunction with the dwarf planet, Makemake. The closest contact Makemake makes with the Sun virtually aligns with the Jupiter closest solar contact, these points in Aries. The heliocentric north node of Makemake spots the ecliptic in Gemini. The combo of Makemake’s orbital elements promotes two agendas: Believe your own hype; and evaluate your religion and philosophy to ensure it serves you well.
With Mars transiting, the note is to absorb the sound of uttered affirmations into the core of the being. When you declare what you are supposed to be, ensure it rings true in your center of gravity. If it does not, take time out to absorb all elements of you as proclaimed on your social media profiles into your spiritual awareness. Eliminate any and all inconsistencies. Mars also asks for an honest review of all things that your beliefs/theology demand you do. Does tithing make sense? Is your six hours of daily chanting working out for you? Do your meditations restore peace within or arouse the sensation of wasting time? Line up the sights such that your aim is true and your propitiation consistent with real world demands on your life.
On the same day Mars mixes it up with Makemake, he conjoins the curious pulsar PSR 1257+12. Why is this pulsar deserving of inquisitive inspection? Years ago, this spinning neutron star confirmed that objects outside our solar system may hold planets in their gravitational grasp. In fact, this pulsar holds three extra-solar planets in its realm. The reason this never made big news is that a neutron star does not offer up what it takes to sustain life as we know it. There is not a Goldilocks Zone of “simply perfect, just right” to sustain life on the pulsar’s satellites.
However, this neutron star, with its planetary trifecta in early Libra, offers up interesting observations. Perhaps there is always a third choice beyond those factors perceived as black and white, up and down, yin and yang. Maybe the three prongs on an electrical plug imply that current flow may not entirely be defined by the negative and positive poles... at least acknowledge that while going with the flow, electron or otherwise, it remains necessary to stay grounded and centered, thus the need for the third prong.
In Libra time, options and considerations oscillate back and forth on the scales, presumably leaning toward decisions. What if neither of the options considered offers an emotionally satisfying outcome? Suggests the implication of Mars to PSR 1257+12, deciding not to decide between the options in conscious awareness in any given moment, is a valid decision. Should one comb through the recent passage of Mars in Virgo, perhaps a few factoids linger that may help to clarify matters. If not, with Mars here, it is cool to declare that no advancement in options present shall be pursued. Should the Universe be cool with that, how about you?
Even if limbo status prevails for a few weeks, that’s still cool. On 24 September, Mars in Libra opposes Chiron in Aries. More than likely someone you know and appreciate declares something stinging about your ability (or inability) to accomplish the tasks at hand. While reaction to what is perceived as an insult runs strong, protest not. Instead, work to ensure that anything more that may be required of you can be learned, acquired, accomplished or infused is pursued. When you realize any noted deficiency has been resolved, move forward with a wink at the party that insulted you, then turn with grace, determination and decorum to the tasks at hand. The infusion of good feeling spreads warmth throughout the being, which is the very essence of healing itself.
On 03 October Mars opposes both the north lunar node and Eris who seem to be locked in a perpetual time sharing in late Aries. Take some time to assess where you naturally fit in and where you want to be included. Then redefine how these fits contribute to your soulful well being and if they further your path. Should any new fits appear for consideration, determine the qualifications for such a perfect fit and compare that with your current cut. Adjust anything that may need to be tweaked for inclusion. Also, should anything no longer serve your means, it’s okay to cut it loose. Start simple, like with your social media profiles. Is the gain commensurate with time expended to keep these things going?
As Mars prepares to wrap up his stint in Libra, on 08 October he squares Pluto in Capricorn. While Mars-Pluto is often given a bad rap, remember they each co-rule Scorpio. In this case, Scorpio is the next sign Mars engages. This transit provides an energy/power axis assessment. Consider all options for your personal engagement, regardless of scale. Ask yourself a few poignant interrogatives:
Do you possess passion for the proposed endeavor? Would you have to give up privacy or personal elements of your life to engage? If so, are you willing to so engage regardless? Do you possess the grit and gumption for a long-haul grind as implied? How large do you want your scale in life to be? Does this fit with and drive your soul forward?
Based upon the answers to the above, take a little time to trim your energy and stabilize your personal thrust. Remember that powerful, productive transits abound overhead. When Mars dives into the deep end of Scorpio, hoist your anchor and commence advancing!

The Kremlin will likely subsume elements of Belarus’ defense industrial base (DIB) as part of Moscow’s larger effort to reequip the Russian military to support a protracted war against Ukraine. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko stated during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on February 17 that Belarus’ aerospace industry is ready to produce Su-25 ground attack aircraft for the Russian military with the support of Russian technology transfers. Lukashenko also stated that the Belarusian state-run Minsk Automobile Plant began producing components to support Russian KAMAZ (a Russian heavy-duty truck producer) products and expressed willingness to help Russia produce electronic components to substitute for lost Western imports. Lukashenko additionally stated that Belarus is implementing 100 percent of unspecified defense and security cooperation agreements that Belarus and Russia agreed to “three months ago.”
Additional Su-25s and truck parts are likely not critical material for the success of Russia’s long-term war effort.
