Why I like kerosene heaters
So, like, this sounds kinda stupid and bass-ackwards of me to say, when we live in The Year of Our Lord 2024 and have fancy-schmancy mini-split heat-pumps and 90+ percent efficient condensing furnaces and shit, but hear me out alright
Think back to your high school physics class, alright? There's three different kinds of heat: Conduction (not applicable to space heaters), Convection (how pretty much everything that doesn't visibly glow works) and Radiation (basically, anything you can feel without moving air)
If you get one of the radiant-style kerosene heaters, either a reflector-type (Sengoku or Kero-Sun), or one of those mop-wick stove/heater combos (Butterfly or Fire Wheel) you get the best of both worlds
Tumblr media
Fuel burning is always gonna make quite a bit of convection to heat the air in the room BUT you also get a fuckton of radiant heat to warm YOU up immediately, along with all the surfaces in the room over time - walls, floor, ceiling, furniture, etc. all become thermal mass
AND, in addition, kerosene heaters aren't vented, so the burning fuel puts a bunch of water vapor and humidity out into the air as well, which is INVISIBLE thermal mass in addition to the aforementioned mass of surfaces in your house
So, you can run that heater for a few hours in the evening when you're at home and awake and turn it off before bed, and the house will still be a reasonably comfortable temperature when you wake up, even when you have whatever secondary heat (in my case, electric baseboards that are EXPENSIVE AS FUCK to run much cause the kWh cost on our light bill sucks) turned way down
Add to that the fact that the extra humidity keeps my nose from getting PAINFULLY FUCKING DRY EVERY MORNING and the fact that I, personally, enjoy the faint smell of kerosene a LOT more than the smell of the cat's litterbox and the sink full of un-washed dishes and the pile of dirty socks, and you got yourself a winning combo
Oh, and you know the best part about the catalytic radiant-style heaters over the orange-flame or blue-flame convection ones?
THEY RUN ON DIESEL JUST FINE! In the US, since we switched to Ultra Low Sulfur pump diesel back in 2008, the winter-blend stuff that's high in the lighter hydrocarbons and paraffins burns perfectly clean in a radiant kerosene heater. Works fine in the antique blue-flame heaters too, but the orange-flame ones you get at Tractor Supply these days tend to smoke like crazy still, no clue why.
But whatever, my broke ass will DEFINITELY take $3.35 a gallon at the corner store's diesel pump over having to actually fire up the car and DRIVE to fill up my jerry can with $5/gallon kero at the Thornton's out by the expressway.

Welp, the wood stove is out of commission for now. The chimney cap fell off while we were cleaning and we don't have a way to reattach it tonight, but it might take several days which means we have a hole in the roof (the chimney) leading down into the main area of the house and it's supposed to snow this weekend starting tomorrow.
We have some heat in the form of a really old electric radiator and an electric fireplace for upstairs and two electric oil-filled radiant space heaters for downstairs. We might dig out another space heater if we can find it for tonight.
We're also looking to use foam to make a temporary plug for the chimney to keep snow and critters out, but it's not done just yet.

Kind of a random question but you post more about cooking than anyone else I follow: should I get an electric wok? My mom's said she wants one before and I'm thinking of getting one for her bday, but I'm on the fence about it. A lot of stuff I'm reading says that they're not worth it and can't handle the kind of heat woks usually get over an open flame- but we don't have that kind of setup, just an electric countertop heater, and she already makes stir-fries in a cast-iron pan anyway, which has like the same temperature range iirc. So basically my conclusion is that like it might not be as good as a normal wok but it works the same as what we're already doing but more convenient. I hope this is like comprehensible at all, and I'm sorry if it's a weird question, but you just seem like you know your shit when it comes to cooking and I'd like to get your opinion :) I hope you have a good day regardless!
i actually have an electric wok! i don't use it much, but it definitely doesn't serve the use of a traditional wok as we know it. You're very right that most woks want a strong open burner that casts radiant heat on the bottom and up the sides. Even heating is super important for even cooking in a wok, which is super hard to do with an induction burner. I'm pretty sure electric woks use internal coils for heating or like an integrated element in the base (like the one I have) which is good for even heating but it doesn't get as hot as a traditional wok on a flame. Can you cook with it? Absolutely! But you wont really get that specific wok flavor which is created when oil aerosolizes and goes smoky in the pan. this specific thing is actually called wok hay, and it's like kind of a huge reason why so much wok cooking is so rich and smoky. You do not NEED wok hay to make tasty food, though. It really depends on what kinda stuff you wanna do! Simple stir fries are totally doable in an electric wok, but they're also just as doable in a standard non stick of sufficient size. Non sticks also, yknow, have the benefit of being insanely easy to take care of. also works well with most induction heaters! Only problem is they dont have great upper heat tolerances. anyway id say look up the specific wok and what temperatures it can get to and its material. also where the heating element itself *is* in the wok. makes a huge difference

A Guide To Buy Best Room Heaters For Winter Chills
Winters can be very harsh as we know. There are few states in northern India where winter is so harsh that you can get your hands and legs frozen if you step outside your homes. In these times hilly areas in the northern state of India get too cold. Places like Shimla, Kashmir, Manali, and Delhi have such a climate in winters that the temperature goes down to 2 to 0 degrees. In Kashmir, there is annual snow rain which makes living conditions very hard. We have geysers for getting hot running water in our houses and then we have the room heaters which keep us warm in our homes. It will be difficult for us to survive without the harsh winters without our electric room heaters . Mostly in winters, people tend to stay at home as it gets very cold outside. After a tiring day at work, one needs a warm shower and a warm room to sleep in during the winters.
Things To Be Consider Before Buying A Room Heater:
Power Cut Feature- The power cut feature is the most important feature in every room heater. It automatically cuts power if there is a high voltage. Environmental Friendly- Room heaters should be environmentally friendly to avoid the toxic chemicals in the air. Cost-Effective- We have to buy a cost-effective room heater which provides good heating. Watt- A powerful heater requires more watts so do not be fooled by fake products claiming low on energy. Portable- Make sure you are buying a portable room heater so that you can carry it to any room easily.
Types Of Room Heaters
There are many different kinds of room heaters available. They include electric space heaters, wood-burning fireplace room heaters, electric patio heaters, solar room heaters, and dual heater heaters.
But In Tropical countries like India, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Mexico, where we have warmer summers and relatively cooler winters, You do not need extensive insulation systems to keep your home Insulated most of the time. You could bring in portable heaters when there is extreme cold, especially in parts of the Northern part of India near the Himalayas. They use small portable electric room heaters that can be used and can be wrapped and folded after extensive use and can be stored for reuse next fall.
These heaters can be described under the following categories:-
Halogen Heaters:- Halogen heaters incorporate the halogen element with a heating lamp and bulb. They are primarily used in outdoor heating. They come with many safety features built-in such as over-current warning, trip circuit overload, radiant barrier, low battery indicators, safety beam controls, and even circuit breakers so that they can be used in emergencies. There are various significant advantages to having a halogen bar heater in your home. They are typically more energy efficient than the other types available on the market. They allow you to keep the heat where you want it rather than having it redistributed throughout the entire room.
Heat Convection Heaters:- A convection heater is a kind of electric heater which uses electrical currents to heat and radiate heat from a central area rapidly. These currents radiate through the outer surface of the heating appliance and around its internal heating component. These kinds of heaters generally have an extreme case containing the heating elements and the wiring, fans, and pumps. It is possible to purchase this type of heater at home improvement stores or electrical stores, where you will also find a variety of options such as finishes and sizes. Conventional models of these heaters are made from metals like copper and brass; alloys like iron, steel, and aluminum are also used.
Carbon Heaters:- Carbon heaters are huge rectangular panels ranging in diameter from 900mm to 1000mm, heated by a single or double heat absorbing element that gives off infrared radiation. A regular ceramic heater is made out of iron or steel, and the outer surface is made out of ceramic plates which absorb heat. These plates are usually covered with a layer of black powder or silicon carbide. These plates can be easily cut using an electric steak knife and then glued to the steel base with a hot glue gun.
Oil Filled Heaters- These are great for home heating because you will save on electricity. They are not as popular in homes, but they can be much cheaper to run than their electric counterparts. Standard oil filters use space heaters to produce radiant heat which makes it very efficient if located properly.
Models Of Room Heater Fan Heaters vs Infrared Heaters- Infrared heaters are the most efficient space heater on the market with average losses of just 3%. They heat people and objects, not just the air. Thus, they are often used for warming bodies without drying them out in certain ailments such as asthma or arthritis. Compared to an electric fan heater which only heats the air, infrared is not only more efficient but provides a better heating experience.
Infrared Heaters vs Oil Filled Room Heaters- Infrared heaters are cheaper than oil-filled room heaters. Infrared is a good energy source for both commercial and residential use, as the infrared energy is "radiated" out in all directions away from the unit creating an even distribution of warmth. Oil-filled units on the other hand need to be positioned on top of people or furniture to create any type of warmth, which means that you lose some intensity due to how long it takes for the oil to transfer its heat into living objects.
Fan Heaters vs Oil Filled Room Heaters-Fan heaters are meant to increase airflow in a home while oil-filled room heaters are used to radiate heat. Oil-filled room heaters will be more effective on very cold days but are not recommended for anything under 50 degrees Fahrenheit because the oils can easily become combustible at lower temperatures.
Conclusion Once you have bought a new heater, you should maintain it correctly; This means that you should clean the heater regularly and ensure no dust is accumulated inside it. This should be done by removing the plates inside and wiping them down with a soft cloth or tissue paper. If the leaves seem damaged, you can either buy new ones or cut them out and replace them. Check our latest collection to Buy Room Heaters at best price in India.

Paint curing in cold weather might take up to twice as long, which will significantly lower your productivity. However, you can cure body fillers, paints, primers, and lacquers in less than ten minutes if you use an IR paint booth.
Classification of Infrared waves
Three types of infrared heating are commonly distinguished: short wave, medium wave, and long wave. A portion of the sun’s natural light spectrum, infrared waves don’t cause damage to skin like UV rays.
Short Wave
Refers to non-visible light with a wavelength of around 1400–3000 nanometres (nm). Because SWIR light falls outside of the visible spectrum (400–700 nm), it is invisible to the human eye
Medium Wave
A portion of the electromagnetic spectrum’s infrared band that spans wavelengths of 3µm to 5µm (3,000–5,000nm). Thermal imaging cameras that are not cooled detect radiant heat like this.
Long Wave

Heat Transfer Methods
Conduction
In the Conduction method, the heat transfer occurs between objects by direct contact.
Convection
In the Convection method, the heat transfer takes within the fluid.
Radiation
In the Radiation method, the heat transfer occurs without involving particles through electromagnetic waves.
How to Infrared dryer works?
A reflector and a heating element are the two main parts of an infrared heater. Heat is produced by the heating element from chemical energy received from fuel or electricity. This thermal energy is then directed towards surrounding objects by the reflector as radiant heat.
Types of Infrared heaters
There are three major industrial infrared heaters: quartz, ceramic, and metal sheaths. These heaters use electromagnetic infrared rays, achieving temperature from 1300 ° F to 1600 ° F (704 ° C to 871 ° C) according to their structure, and improving both efficiency and productivity. You can do it. Among them, quartz heaters are known to reach the highest temperatures and ceramic heaters are the most economical.
Quartz Infrared Heaters : Quartz infrared heaters produce short wavelengths and provide the hottest type of infrared heat. They are great for high temperature applications but are not suitable for heating open spaces.
Ceramic infrared stammering : inexpensive ceramic infrared radiators and are used for heat places.

Comprehensive Heating Solutions and Residential Plumbing for Modern Homes
At the heart of comfort and efficiency remains the need for home heating solutions. Keeping your house warm through a winter season might ensure warmth for a cold month, but it should help cut energy waste at a cost, too. Of course, from furnaces to heat pumps, there exist myriad options of one's preferred system. So, effective home heating can only begin as part of broad home care or maintenance in aspects such as residential plumbing. When put together, these services will ensure that your house operates fluently throughout the year.
This blog post explores the importance of heating systems, highlights different choices for homeowners, and explains how residential plumbing provides the foundation of a well-operating home.
Understanding Modern Heating Options Even though heating technologies have advanced together with the pace of technological progression, there is always much that modern heating can provide for a household that a house owner can engage. Some of the current heating solutions include;
Furnace The most common heaters in homes, as furnaces can easily force heated air via ducts, and they could be set to provide the much-needed heat immediately and with speed, working perfectly on gas, electricity, or oil. Heat Pumps Heat pumps warm and cool your house. It gets the heat from the air, ground, or water to warm your interiors.
Radiant Floor Heating: It is a highly advanced technology whereby heating elements are placed underneath the floors, where it distributes the heat evenly and uniformly. This is very attractive in colder climates where floors are unbearably cold.
Boilers: Boilers are either of water or steam types and may distribute heat with the use of radiators or an underfloor system. It is very efficient, and homes equipped with hydronic heating systems will find this very suitable.
Solar Heating Systems For the earth-friendly homeowner, solar heating systems are one source of new energy; reliance on fossil fuels is simply reduced. Whereas the installation fee is higher compared to other techniques, the benefit over the longer term in saved energy makes up for it. Each of these systems has different advantages and benefits, and this would determine right one for use depending on whether your home, climate, as well as cost. Benefits Of Efficient Heating Solution
The acquisition of a new modern heating system has a number of advantages as shown below:
Energy Efficiency: Modern systems use a lot less energy, and hence utility bills will be significantly lower and will impact the environment minimally.
Improved Comfort: Heating solutions have made houses evenly warm; thus, no spots in the house are cold or hot.
Improved Indoor Air Quality: Most systems are designed with filters that filter out dust, allergens, and other particles for quality indoor air.
Reliability: The modern heating system is built to last longer, therefore ensuring years of performance.
The Role of Residential Plumbing in Home Comfort This includes heating solutions that warm up and give comfort to your house. On the other hand, residential plumbing maintains the unhampered flow of water in your house. Plumbing is very essential in heating systems, particularly when such systems are based on water like boilers and radiant floor heating. Some of the most important elements that residential plumbing avails to a heating system include the following:
Continuous hot water supply, which boilers and radiant heating require.
Effective Installation: Properly fitted and insulated pipes save on heat losses, which there enhances the entire efficiency of heating.
System Interface: Plumbing integrates with heating systems to distribute hot water whenever they are required either through heating the floors or through the heating by the radiators. Maintenance and Repairs Plumbing regularly helps prevent leaks, clogs among many other things that might impact the performance in heating. Common Plumbing Challenges Impacting Heating. Even the least plumbing issue can significantly affect your heating. Here is a list of some of the problems and how they can impact your home heating: Leaky Pipes: Contributing to water waste and inefficiency in using the heating systems that depend on water circulation as well. Sediment Build-Up in Pipes: Minerals and sediments collect in pipes and may take years to achieve maximum effective water flows, which would certainly do a great deal in upgrading performance in your boilers and radiator systems.
Leaks in Valves and Connections Problems to your heater are caused by circulating imbalances because the fact that damp faulty valves or lose connections could make water turn out heating partially or even make certain areas feel chilly in a house. By correcting these problems in good time, your heating system will become efficient as well as age a bit less long.     Heating and Plumbing Tips These are the tips and will have the heating and plumbing system operating efficiently; they will, therefore, remain on for quite a long period with minimal breakdowns. Schedule Annual Checks A yearly inspection by a professional will identify all the problem areas before they show signs. Boiler Flush Boiler flushing flushes off sludge or any debris which may be found inside, thereby making the system less efficient compared to when made new, it ages faster Tubings: Insulation Keep done This prevents loss in heat from being too much. This is highly recommended in areas that are not being heated, which happens to basements and crawl spaces. Replacing old systems with new modern ones improves performance and efficiency in the heating and plumbing system Do not hesitate over repair Little issues that could seem insignificant may grow into costly situations in the long term.
Service Provider Whether you’re upgrading your heating system or addressing plumbing issues, working with a reliable service provider is crucial. Look for companies with experience in both heating and plumbing to ensure seamless integration and optimal performance.
Conclusion A well-heated home environment with the proper maintenance of its plumbing will be the comfortable and effective one. Heating systems give the warmth and coziness that can balance the chillier months. Household plumbing ensures the smooth delivery of water as a support in heating systems using it, thereby making equipment warm any space in a harmonious coexistence that can meet needs at any time of the year.
