Pawsitively Perfect: Pet-Friendly Furniture and Home Decor Tips for Stylish Living
For many of us, our pets are more than just animals—they're beloved members of the family. However, living with pets also means adapting our homes to accommodate their needs while maintaining a stylish and comfortable living environment for ourselves. Fortunately, with the right furniture and home decor choices, it's possible to achieve a harmonious balance between pet-friendly living and stylish design. In this article, our interior designers in Kollam will give you tips for creating a pet-friendly home that's both functional and fashionable.
1. Choose Durable Materials:
When selecting furniture and home decor items for a pet-friendly space, durability is key. Opt for materials that can withstand the wear and tear of everyday pet activities, such as scratching, shedding, and accidents. Look for furniture upholstered in pet-friendly fabrics like microfiber, leather, or outdoor-grade fabrics that are easy to clean and resistant to stains and odors.
2. Consider Pet-Friendly Furniture:
Invest in furniture that's specifically designed with pets in mind. Look for pet-friendly features such as removable, machine-washable slipcovers for sofas and chairs, which make cleaning up pet hair and stains a breeze. Additionally, consider furniture with built-in storage compartments or hidden pet beds to maximize space and keep pet accessories organized.
3. Opt for Washable Rugs and Flooring:
Pets can be messy, so it's essential to choose flooring and rugs that are easy to clean and maintain. Consider opting for hardwood or laminate flooring, which is more resistant to scratches and stains than carpet. If you prefer carpet, choose low-pile options that are less likely to trap pet hair and dirt. For area rugs, select machine-washable or stain-resistant materials that can withstand frequent cleaning.
4. Create Designated Pet Spaces:
Designate specific areas of your home for your pets to eat, sleep, and play. Invest in stylish pet beds, crates, or kennels that blend seamlessly with your home decor. Create a cozy nook for your pet with comfortable bedding and toys to keep them entertained and occupied. By providing designated spaces for your pets, you can help prevent them from wandering into areas where they're not allowed and minimize potential damage to your furniture and belongings.
5. Incorporate Pet-Friendly Accessories:
Incorporate pet-friendly accessories into your home decor to add a touch of style while catering to your pet's needs. Look for decorative storage bins or baskets to store pet toys, leashes, and grooming supplies. Choose pet bowls and feeding stations that complement your home's aesthetic, such as ceramic or stainless steel options in coordinating colors or patterns. Additionally, consider adding pet-friendly indoor plants like spider plants or bamboo to bring a touch of nature into your home while ensuring they're safe for your furry friends.
6. Keep Safety in Mind:
Ensure your home is safe and pet-friendly by removing or securing hazardous items that could pose a risk to your pets. Keep electrical cords, toxic plants, small objects, and household chemicals out of reach or securely stored away. Invest in pet gates or barriers to restrict access to certain areas of your home, such as stairs or rooms with delicate decor items.
7. Regular Maintenance and Cleaning:
Maintaining a pet-friendly home requires regular upkeep and cleaning to keep it looking its best. Establish a routine cleaning schedule that includes vacuuming, dusting, and mopping to remove pet hair, dander, and dirt. Wash bedding, blankets, and pet toys regularly to keep them clean and odour-free. Additionally, schedule professional upholstery and carpet cleanings as needed to remove stubborn stains and odours.
Creating a pet-friendly home that's stylish and functional is entirely achievable with the assistance from a team of reliable interior designers in Kerala. By selecting durable materials, incorporating pet-friendly features, and maintaining a regular cleaning routine, you can create a perfect living environment for both you and your furry friends. With these tips, you can enjoy the company of your pets while living in a home that's as stylish as it is welcoming.

HYDROPOWER DAMS & SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVES
We all are well aware of the versatility of the Hydropower dams that benefit the communities in a variety of ways. Hydropower and pumped-storage continue to play an important role in the battle against climate change, providing vital power, storage and flexibility. Though Hydropower does not pollute the air or the water supply, the Hydropower facilities, on the other hand, can have significant environmental consequences by altering the environment and impacting land use, housing and natural ecosystems in the dam region.
A dam and a reservoir are common features of hydroelectric power projects. The graph below shows the distribution of dams in both the hemispheres and how vastly it is threatening the species within its region. These constructions block fish movement and impact the fish populations. The temperature of the water and the flow of the river also gets affected by the operation of a hydroelectric power plant and moreover the native flora and animals in the river and on land get harmed as a result of these changes.
Figure: Globalscale dams impact on freshwater megafauna
(Source: Future large hydropower dams impact global freshwater megafauna, Scientific Reports, 2019)
Furthermore, the people's houses, valuable natural regions, agricultural land, and archaeological sites may be covered by reservoirs. As a result, dam construction may necessitate the relocation of people. Methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, may also develop and be released into the atmosphere in some reservoirs.
Now when we come to India, it is the fifth-largest country in terms of installed hydroelectric power capacity in the world. India's installed utility-scale hydroelectric capacity was 46,000 MW as of March 31, 2020, accounting for 12.3% of the country's total utility power production capacity. A total of 4,683 MW (1.3 % of the total utility power generating capacity) of smaller hydroelectric power units have been constructed. At a 60% load factor, India's hydroelectric power potential is projected to be 148,700 MW. In the fiscal year 2019–20, India generated 156 TWh of hydroelectric electricity (excluding small hydro) with an average capacity factor of 38.71%.
The following table shows the basin wise hydroelectric power potential of the Indian river system as suggested by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).
Examples of environmental issues related to hydropower electricity projects in India:
1. Uttarakhand
The flood and catastrophe vulnerability of Uttarakhand and the Himalayas has risen as a result of the building and operation of dams and hydroelectric projects. The hazards are being multiplied by the growing frequency of heavy and strong rainfall events, glacier melting, glofs and moraine left behind by retreating glaciers, the intrinsic fragility of the mountains, blasting and tunnelling and deforestation.
2. Kerala
According to Reuters, Kerala's two largest reservoirs, Idukki and Idamalayar, have been functioning for years without emergency action plans (EAPs), which are a necessity for major dams throughout the world. The reservoirs also lack "rule curves," a crucial safety guideline that specifies the maximum amount of water that may be safely kept behind a dam at any one time based on seasonal conditions. The banks of the Periyar River, which makes its way to the shore, are dotted with dozens of cities and villages. The path of the river downstream has changed and communities have encroached along its banks over the years since the gates on the gigantic Idukki dam have not been opened for 26 years. As a result, victims and officials had no idea where water levels might increase in the case of a disaster.
3. Northeast India
The Tipaimukh High Dam (THD) on the Manipur-Mizoram border was built to retain floodwaters in the lower Barak valley, but it was later upgraded to include a hydroelectric component. The THD case highlights concerns of relocation and loss of livelihoods, particularly for a large number of indigenous populations, mostly belonging to the Zeliangrong and Hmar peoples. The dilemma is also transboundary since the people of Bangladesh are concerned about probable changes in the flow pattern downstream of the dam following the THD's construction.
Alternatives/ Solutions and the startups encouraging them:

Conclusion:
When looked at the other factors which imply the disadvantages behind hydropower dams in India include our inability to provide proper forecasts, use available forecasts, and have a functioning disaster management mechanism, as well as our dismal track record in conducting any credible environmental-social impact assessments. Moreover, lack of public consultations, poor appraisals, and a lack of capacity to monitor or achieve compliance.
On the other hand every year, dozens of such dams are decommissioned at a faster rate in developed nations like the US and Europe owing to the deemed hazardous and non-economic problems related to it. However, it is concerning that developing countries like India are not being able to recognise the unsustainable character of these programmes and still new hydropower projects are coming up. It is true that in three monsoon months, Indian Rivers transport more than two-thirds of their yearly flow. We are wasting a vast amount of water that is always flowing and may be transformed to electricity. Thus these questions are also certain to think about: can we afford to waste the majority of water's energy by allowing it to trickle down the drain unutilized during the rainy season? Dams and reservoirs on the other hand are built to endure a hundred years or more and what other form of energy has such a lengthy lifespan? They give us low-cost energy no doubt but it also comes with irreparable damage to major rivers and ecology.
Therefore, for the country's development and prosperity, it is necessary to expand and shift reliance on hydropower. This is important for the long-term water resource development to assure the continued supply of water for hydropower generating and other operations, as well as flood mitigation for downstream residents. Hence, we need to look for sustainable and environmentally-friendly solutions to our increasing demands for water and electricity for various purposes.

Find the best rental apartments in Indian cities
Owning a home is a lifelong ambition for many people across the country. Still, it is not for everybody due to financial constraints, frequent relocations, and the inability to find a suitable property. Renting is usually a convenient option since it avoids regular upkeep and property taxes. It is a cost-effective strategy, depending on a person's lifestyle, financial position, and employment or retirement. Also, choosing to stay in flats on rent in Kochi makes a lot of sense as the accommodation is budget-friendly. They are close to schools, hospitals, local markets, and other facilities, making them a better alternative than purchasing a house.
Finding a house to rent in Kochi
Kochi (or Cochin) is a city on the southwest coast of Kerala, often known as the Queen of the Arabian Sea because of its natural harbour. Because of the abundance of temples, it is one of India's most popular tourist destinations. Many traders prefer flats on rent in Kochi due to lively commerce, particularly fisheries dealing via ships and boats. Kochi has a wide range of inexpensive apartments for rent, including 1RK/1BHK, 2BHK, 3BHK, and 3+BHK.
These houses are well-equipped and pleasant, with monthly rent ranging from INR 6,000 to INR 1,00,000, depending on location, carpet size, and apartment size. Kochi offers a wide range of accommodation options, including independent floors, builder homes, independent houses, flats, penthouses, and villas. Thoppumpady, Kakkanad, Panampilly Nagar, Kaloor, and Kadavanthra are the most popular places to stay in Kochi. These apartments are conveniently located near major cities, airports, train stations, and other facilities.
Finding a flat to rent in Secunderabad
Unlike Cochin, Secunderabad is a twin city of Hyderabad in the Hyderabad District of Telangana and is India's sixth-largest metropolis employing many. Because of the low cost of living in Secunderabad, many job seekers have relocated and opted to live in rental housing. Secunderabad renters have 793 rental flats to select from, with monthly rents ranging from INR 3,500 to INR 1,50,000. Rental houses in Secunderabad are located in prominent areas and have gated communities, 24-hour security, water and electricity services, and a lift. Depending on the carpet space, many houses have a single or four-sided balcony.
These flats are spacious and allow you to appreciate the breathtaking views of the surrounding lush flora. It is a facility that delivers comfort and efficiency because it is equipped with all current amenities.
Conclusion
Internet services like housing.com provide a renter with various options for renting any space and selecting from rental houses in Secunderabad. Renters must follow all of society's rules, and they must carefully understand the provisions before getting into an arrangement to avoid eventual fraud. If you have a four-legged family member, get permission first. The apartments are typically furnished or semi-equipped and located near local markets. Before renting the residence, double-check the details on the website.

M. Jaishankar (1977-2018)
M. Jaishankar, also known as Psycho Shankar, was an Indian serial killer known for his spate of rapes/murders between 2008 & 2011. He is believed to have been involved in around 30 rape, murder and robbery cases across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. He was accused of killing at least 19 women. After being captured by Indian authorities, Jaishankar was incarcerated in Bangalore, where he was diagnosed as being mentally ill. He committed suicide after an unsuccessful escape attempt in February 18. Jaishankar’s crimes are known to have begun around 2008. The first crime of his to be reported occurred on July 3, 2009, when he attempted to rape & murder P. Shyamala, 45. By August of that year he had raped & murdered 12 women, and raped a further 6 women. Jaishankar kept a machete in his bag, killing whoever resisted him. He would kidnap sex workers near dhabas (roadside cafes) on highways, raping and killing them brutally. He also targeted women living in farmhouses or other, similar, rural areas.
On August 23, 2009, Jaishankar raped & murdered 39-year-old police constable M. Jayamani. Usually stationed at the all-women police station in Kangeyam, Jayamani was on temporary assignment at Perumanallur for the visit of deputy chief minister M.K. Stalin. Jaishankar kidnapped her, raped her multiple times, and killed her. The police found her body 1 month later. Jaishankar and his accomplice P. Mohan Selvam were charged with the murder of 50-year-old K. Thangammal Ponnaya on September 10, 2009. The pair were acquitted in this case in 2014 due to insufficient evidence. The Tiruppur police began a manhunt for Jaishankar & arrested him on October 19, 2009. He was locked up at the Coimbatore Central Prison & was charged with 13 counts of rape & murder in Tiruppur, Salem & Dharmapuri. Whilst in custody he confessed that he enjoyed torturing women before raping & killing them. On March 17, 2011, police took Jaishankar to a fast-track court in Dharmapuri for a murder trial. The following day, armed reserve police constables M. Chinnasamy & Rajavelu were assigned to escort him back to Coimbatore. On this journey, Jaishankar managed to escape at the Salem bus stand at around 9:30pm. 2 days later, Chinnasamy shot himself due to shame. Jaishankar escaped to Karnataka, where he raped and murdered 6 women in a month in Bellary. He also killed a man & a child in Dharmapuri. At the end of April 2011 the police managed to trace his phone to Delhi. They initially believed that he had dumped his phone there, but in May, they traced his calls to Mumbai, where he stopped using it. A special team, made up of 2 sub-inspectors and 15 other officers, was assigned to find & arrest Jaishankar.
By May of 2011 the police had distributed wanted posters in public places across Karnataka & Tamil Nadu, looking for information about Jaishankar’s whereabouts. On the evening of May 4, 2011, he reached Elagi village in Karnataka on a stolen motorcycle. He approached Chandrakala Hotagi, working alone in a field, asking her for water & food. He proceeded to try and rape her, but she raised the alarm and her husband came to her rescue, along with a friend. Jaishankar tried to run away but Prakash Hotagi and other villages caught him and took him to the Zalaki police station. He was handed over to the Chitradurga police on May 5, 2011. Following his arrest he was kept at the Parappana Agrahara Central Jail in Bangalore – he was sentenced to 27 years in prison. Whilst at the jail he received treatment for psychiatric problems. On August 31, 2013, police took Jaishankar to the courthouse in Tumkur near Bangalore. After returning that evening, Jaishankar faked illness & was admitted to the prison hospital wing. There, he managed to get hold of a duplicate key & used it at 2am on September 1, 2013, when the daily guard change occurred. Police suspected that an insider helped him get the key. Jaishankar scaled a 20 foot wall, then walked across a 15 foot wall before finally climbing the 30 foot high compound wall. He then managed to safely cross the electric fence, since, luckily for him, it was not functional that night. It was reported that he carried a bamboo pole with him to balance on the walls & a bedsheet to use for cushioning the glass pieces on top of the wall. Jaishankar was injured during the escape & drops of his blood were discovered outside the outer wall. It was also reported that he was wearing a prison uniform during the escape. 11 jail staff, including 3 wardens, 2 jailors & 6 security guards, were suspended as a result of the escape. Police issued a red alert to all Karnataka police stations, also urging women to be careful in isolated areas. A reward of ₹ 500,000 was announced for any information leading to Jaishankar’s arrest. Police also analysed his behaviour, psychology and history in an attempt to predict his next actions. 10,000 wanted posters & 75,000 pamphlets with photographs of Jaishankar & in 5 languages (Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu) were printed. These were distributed in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Maharashtra.
During his 2nd escape Jaishankar had fractured his leg jumping from the 30 foot high wall of the prison compound. He didn’t contact his family in Tamil Nadu, but soon after his escape a police informant managed to get in touch with him. This informant lured Jaishankar to a dilapidated building near the Kudlu gate in Bangalore, promising him a motorcycle in order to escape the city. Instead, police arrested him at noon on September 6, 2013. It cost the government over ₹ 75,000 to treat his fractured leg at the Victoria Hospital, in an operation on September 23. After the surgery Jaishankar was sent to Central Prison in Bangalore with 24/7 CCTV monitoring his cell along with extra lights. The lock on his cell door was designed to be unreachable by the person within. It was also decided that in case of illness, Jaishankar would be treated in his cell, rather than being taken to the hospital wing. Police also agreed to deploy extra security while escorting him to trials in order to minimise the chance of escape. On February 25, 2018, Jaishankar unsuccessfully attempted a 3rd prison escape & was subsequently held in solitary confinement. 2 days later he committed suicide by slitting his throat with a shaving blade that he had acquired from a barber the day before. Jail staff discovered him lying in a pool of blood at 2:30am, during their daily rounds, and gave first aid. He was later moved to Victoria Hospital and it is there that he was declared dead at 5:10am.

Building Management System - IPCS Automation Trivandrum
What is a building management system?
Building management system is also known as Building Automation System, where a computer-supported control system installed in buildings that control and tracks the buildings electrical and mechanical equipment.
A BMS observes, directs, controls and reports on smart building technology systems. These systems may contain access control, video monitoring , fire alarms, HVAC control, programmable lighting and electric power management. BMS can control things such as ventilation, lighting, power systems, fire systems, and security systems.
How do EMS/BMS systems work?
Energy Monitoring and handling systems are significant to Building Management Systems (BMS) and Building Automation Controls (BAC) and use a chained system of sensors, software, and building controls.
Building Management Systems Characteristics :
A BMS is most usual in a large building. Its important function is to govern the good atmosphere inside the building and may control temperature, carbon dioxide levels, and humidity within a building.
Security Systems
It is a multi-level security system.(physical security). They have access control. All the employees are provided with access cards. The CCTV's are placed at all the gates and these are monitored at the reception.
2. Fire Alarm Systems
Each room has a fire alarm that detects the smoke. It is also provided with a sprinkler system. These sprinklers will not be in the server room. The fire extinguishers will be different in the server room. A mock fire drill is conducted every month. Fire extinguishers are placed at every 100m.
3. Air Conditioning
The air chillers which are placed at the top of the building send cool air to the A.H.U(Air Handling Units ) which are provided at all the levels. There are 4 A.H.U’s in each level. The cool air is distributed to the entire level from the A.H.U’s.
4. Server Room
This is the main part in an IT company in which all the data is stored. This room cannot be accessed by everyone. It has a passcode and access card to enter.18 degrees is maintained in the rooms.
5. Power Systems
The main power comes from the AP electricity board.Automatic switch on and off generators systems – if one fails the other works. The main power will be sent to UPS (which has 30min backup). Each cabin has 3 power sockets.

Kerala Flood: What to learn from Japan!!
Kerala Flood: What Kerala & India have to learn from Japan
In the recent Kerala flood , the death toll neared 400 when I was writing this article. No doubt, people of kerala, specially the youth, used their best skills on social media and ground ,proved themselves that they are responsible citizens. The more interesting one was, people who were branded as useless for the society , became more useful in the rescue operations.
In the recent flood in Western Japan, 200 people became victims to the fury in the midst of worst weather disaster in 36 years of Japan history. Since July, intense heat and water shortages raised alarm for the outbreak of diseases. People living on mountain slopes and flood plains , numbering 269,672 households has no access to water. When there is less access to drinking water, then there is less fluid in the body and chances of more heart strokes. Moreover, people are already under stress and depression. There was no grudge or complaint for the people living in relief camps , in stead , they found solutions by themselves. There were only a few portable fans at the evacuation centers, but they tried to cool themselves with paper fans. Since Japanese are good like skills, their wisdom work at problem solving.
In Kerala, most of the affected areas are plain except some hills and slopes in a few districts whereas most of the Western Japan have hills and slopes and mostly devastated areas in the recent flood were provinces like Hiroshima, Okayama and Ehime. In Kerala, more than 10,00,000 people took shelter in the relief camp whereas in Western Japan, the people living in relief camp reduced to just 7000 only within a week time. About 400 homes were damaged and 10,000 homes were flooded . In Kerala , it is yet to ascertain the extend of damage and flooded homes.
In the Western Japan, electricity supplies were cut off at about 51,000 homes in six prefecture and one should remember that only in Hiroshima, the population goes more than 12 lakhs. In Japan ferrying supplies to convenient stores and retailers were treated as emergency vehicles. In Kerala, the cargoes got piled up awaiting customs clearance for many days.
The flood situation in Kerala worsened when the Idukki Hydel Project opened the five gates and lifted the shutters of over two dozen dams under the pressure of unprecedented downpour after 1923. Lots of encroachments across the banks of many rivers also became a huge hindrance for the crisis management. And many new houses have come in these areas and also flourishing of agriculture activities adding more problems in the list for the disaster management. Land mafias have been swallowing the beauty of Kerala, gradually since last several decades under the nose of politicians, bureaucrats and the government. Kerala and India have to learn from the disaster management technology of Japan, a disaster= prone nation saved 5000 villagers from flooding in Indonesia. India has a long standing relation with Japan and India is yet to explore and gain more skills from Japan in the area of disaster management. In the case of disaster, Japanese handle the situation with a sense of emergency and they play a very important roles in protecting the lives of civilians.
No doubt, the youth of Kerala did a wonderful job and took challenges in their hands and solved the puzzles . They really used their swimming ,rappelling , and diving skills in saving people’s lives and many youth explored new avenues through social media and digital process to monitor food and location management. The Prime Minister of India and the Chief Minister of Kerala with their team tried to do their best and the best thing happened in Kerala was the unity of the people living in Kerala ,outside the states and international Indians and a lesson for Indians that not to repeat the mistakes happened in Himachal and Jammu & Kashmir. My gratitude also goes to my elder brother’s family members , Sujit P. S. and Anup Aravind Menon for having sleepless nights in helping the people in the relief camps in Eranakulam area.
(Below photo contributed by Mr. Sujith P.S.Volunteer from the relief camp,Samooham High School, North Paravur in Eranakulam District)
No doubt , Japan is the world leader in readiness and in many Japanese schools, the first day of the class and celebrations include evacuation drills. Japan has the world’s most sophisticated disaster prior warning system. Private and public organizations organize emergency drills and transport stranded commuters from their offices to their homes.
Let Kerala: God’s Own Country get blessed by the nature again and become the Beauty Icon of the world. Let the Land of Snakes, Land of Religions, Land of scholars, Land of Ayurveda,Land of Spices, Land of Education , & Land of culture become a giant institution for humanity and value system.
