Let's talk mobility aids!

Canes

Canes are for when you need to take a little bit of weight off of one side of your body, need a little help with balance, or need a little extra stability when you walk. It's an easy mobility aid to find and get, and it's pretty easy to figure out how to use. Have the cane sized so the handle sits at wrist level, then hold it on the opposite side to the one that hurts. Match your cane strikes to the steps on the hurt side. It will hurt your arm, elbow, and shoulder sometimes, but having a properly sized cane will help.

Rollators

Rollators are kind of the "next step up" in support. They come with more restrictions, you get limited to ramps and stuff, but they're also the least restrictive wheeled mobility aid because they're light and easy to pick up and toss around. They also have a seat a lot of times and a basket so you don't need to carry stuff. They're for when you need a place to rest, something to lean on when you walk, better balance assistance than a cane, and less weight bearing than a cane. I also found that it helped me with fatigue quite a bit. There's two main kinds, euro style like the first, and regular like the second. There are other fancier ones but I'm covering the basics here.

Rollators are my favorite mobility aid and I've used everything from canes to a fancy high grade power chair. They're just the perfect balance of help and freedom. They provide so much support for how far they go.

Crutches

Arm crutches are pretty neat! They're a lot more ergonomic than a cane. In fact, some people use a single arm crutch as a cane. They distribute the weight a little better, so it's not all on your wrists, and they support you better than a rollator can. The major cons I found are that they take two hands to use so you can't carry much and I had a really hard time trying to learn to walk with them. A lot of people who use forearm crutches have other mobility aids and use the forearm crutches when they want to or need to walk.

Manual Wheelchairs

These are for when walking becomes more difficult than pushing a wheelchair. There's no weight being put on your legs and feet and depending on your needs, you can get really specific with your adaptations if you have a custom wheelchair verses a standard wheelchair. My first custom chair looked like a monster truck because i took in the woods and gravel, my second custom chair after I got sicker has a head rest, a backrest that holds me up, and a little electric box that I can attach that helps me push. The difference between getting a standard and custom wheelchair is dependent on how much money the user has, what kind of needs they have, and what kind of medical access they have. (One is not more "real" than the other.) I highly recommend getting a cushion for under your butt if you have a standard chair without a cushion, I used a standard full time for 6 months and a cushion made a huge difference.

Mobility scooters

Mobility scooters are for people who can't walk long distances, but can still walk with the help of a cane or unassisted. If you can walk around your house, but not really much else, a mobility scooter might be the aid for you! There's a lot of different styles and battery life lengths and handling abilities so try a few different scooters out if you can.

Powerchairs

Powerchairs come in a couple different types or "groups" depending on your needs. Group 1 is the kind of chair you're probably most familiar with. It's basically for someone who needs a powerchair to get around their house, the doctors, office, and grocery store. You can't do any custom seat cushions or anything, but it's for people who don't need it. Think of like... someone who can walk pretty okay still, it just hurts to walk or they're off balance or a little weak feeling. A lot of times more elderly people will use these, if you're more active look into group 2

Group two chairs are little more durable, a little more stable, sometimes you can switch the captains seats out for custom seating... They're what a full time powerchair user would use if they don't need specialty functions like tilt or recline. They also often have 6 wheels rather than 4 like the group 1 chairs have.

Group 3 powerchairs are reserved for specific diagnoses like muscular dystrophy, ALS, and other severe neurological and neuromuscular illnesses. These are also called "rehab" chairs because they're for making sure severely disabled people have quality of life. The tilt function is for pressure relief, though you can also get things like elevation so you can raise and lower your chair, and some of them can recline flat. There are other avenues of moving grade 3 power chairs beyond the joystick as well in case someone can't use their hands or doesn't have them. (Head controls, torso controls, and straw controls called sip and puff are alternatives.) They can go on a little worse terrain than group 1 and two chairs and go a little farther, but if they get stuck they weigh 350 lbs and it's awful.

There's a few other types of mobility aid that I don't know enough about, like ankle foot orthotics and gait trainers, but these are the basic "mobility aid" most people will come across.

Your birthday was coming up in a couple weeks and Lando wanted it to make it as perfect as it could be. That is what you deserve. He rented out your favorite restaurant weeks in advance so you could have some privacy with your friends and family. A cake had been ordered at the best bakery and invitations had been sent out. The only thing that was missing were your presents.

Lando had already bought some books he knew you wanted to read and a signt LP from your favorite artist, but that wasn't enough for the love of his life. So he invited you for a day to go shopping and you could pick out anything you wanted and lando would swipe his card to pay for it.

That is how you found yourself walking through the store, Lando close behind you with a basket. He loved seeing you pick something out which you liked. Even more when he would be taking it of.

His head was shot up by your voice,"This one is nice," you beam at the necklace in your hand.

"Let me see," Lando puts out his hand and you gave him the piece of jewellery.

"I know it is a little expensive," you stated as Lando looked at the necklace. It was a delicate gold( or silver ) Lariat necklace wich you wanted to wear with a new low neck dress you got from Lando a few weeks back.

Lando raised his eyebrows at your statement. The price was 30 euros and he didn't want to brag, but he could afford more than that. They were in Monaco and the first store you walked into was a Zara. "Darling, do I have to show you my bank account. You can get more than this." Lando says to you as he puts it into the basket.

You smile at him but shook your head, "I don't want you to spend too much on me. You already got me that dress."

"That dress wasn't for your birthday, it was because you said you found it beautiful. I wasn't going to let it be bought by someone else." he grabbed your hand and pulled you to the check out. "I will buy this, because you like it. But we are going to take a stop at YSL and DIOR. I saw you eyeing some stuff when we walked past it."

You wanted to argue with him but Lando shushed you. It felt bad to admit, but he was right. You always dreamed of those YSL heels. I mean, who doesn't? He paid for the necklace and hand in hand you walked outside the store.

"It is going to be your birthday. You deserve to have the best presents and that is only going to happen when you actually pick everything you want. You like it, I buy it. Deal?"

You laugh at his speech. "I am sorry that I don't want you to spend all your money, I didn't think you would want that."

He let a soft laugh and kissed your head, "Don't be ridiculous. I buy a McLaren for you if you want. Just say the words."

Total and life-changing solar eclipse

Michael was more than pissed off. He had been planning this April 8, 2024 for over two years. Almost all his friends from astronomy class had gone to Mazatlan, Austin or Niagara Falls. Despite all the logistical challenges, Michael wanted to see the solar eclipse at the Epi Center in Nazas. He was on the road for over 36 hours. And now his luggage with all his equipment had not arrived. And he was three and a half hours late. All he had was his special sunglasses. No telescope. No binoculars. All lost somewhere between Dublin and Mexico City… The sky was already darkening. The excursion he had signed up for was long gone somewhere in the mountains. Here, right in front of the airfield, it was full of amateurs. Idiots who didn't understand the significance of this eclipse from the Saros cycle. They probably thought it was a miracle. Michael checked Google Maps. He didn't have time to drive to the hotel first. There was no cab. But according to the satellite image, there was a large parking lot or something similar not far away. Good north-south orientation. Michael should have a good view. And hopefully it was emptier and quieter there…

He cursed the fact that he had to watch the eclipse with the naked eye. He cursed the fact that his sun cream with the sun protection factor was God knows where. His red hair shone in the sun. And he could feel himself getting sunburnt. He probably stank of sweat. The last shower had been during the stopover in Chicago. Maybe he should have flown to Toronto after all. But now he was here. And totality was getting closer and closer.

Michael had been fascinated by astronomy ever since he could read. And he had taught himself at the age of four. Michael was the epitome of a nerd. Unathletic. No friends. Assistant in the computer science department at Dublin University. And now he was standing here alone in the sweltering heat in this parking lot. His head on his back. Above him, a spectacle that rarely existed in this form. His anger evaporated. His fascination with the play of sun and moon prevailed. He no longer felt the heat. In fact, it was starting to get cooler. Cooler and cooler. And it was also slowly getting noticeably darker. Until it was as if someone had switched off the light. Michael stared open-mouthed at the sky. He was overwhelmed. The Black Sun was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. All his exertions were forgotten. The thousands of euros he had spent on the plane tickets: all a trifle for this spectacle in the sky. He put his head back even further in fascination. And he fell backwards onto the ground.

Maldita sea, Miguel thought. He must have fainted a few seconds after falling to the ground. He held the back of his head. That could be a nasty bump on the head… His sunglasses had fallen off his face… He looked at the sun with a wink. Yes, you could still see the shadow of the moon in front of the sun. And? What was so special about it? It got dark every evening. Today it was also noon. Miserable astronomy crap… Even his kunkels had all gone out to a hill outside the village… He didn't care.

His ball had rolled a few meters further. Miguel took it and practiced shooting baskets. By the time his buddies got back before that nerd thing, he was in shape. And then he would beat the losers. Like every time. Miguel was simply the basketball star of his village. And he was happy when all the strangers had finally left and things were quiet again.

“Bonjour,” Charles greets softly, trying to be helpful by starting to unpack his selections from the basket. In French, he continues, “How are you?” 

Slowly, not taking his eyes off Charles, the man puts his book down on the counter, sliding off his stool. 

“Omega,” he says, in thick, accented English. Charles pauses, taken aback by his unwelcoming tone. “Marked.”

Charles reaches up to the claiming bite on clear display, covering it with his palm. He hasn’t felt conscious of it all of summer break, but now, with the man’s disinterested eyes clearly stuck on his throat, he feels ridiculously exposed. 

“I just want to buy these, please,” Charles says in English as well, trying to give the man a charming smile, but he feels unbalanced. 

He’s never—this is the first time he’s ever been out in public, trying to buy something, since he was outed. Since he was claimed. Charles is just misunderstanding the situation right now. Nothing weird is happening, he just feels . . . vulnerable. 

And this is a store for omega’s, for God’s sake. He knows the laws are different for marked and unmarked omegas, but surely he’s not going to . . . 

“Hm,” the man grumbles. He makes no move to start to check out the items Charles has picked. “I need to see your identification.” 

Charles flinches back, shocked. “Why?” he demands. “They’re blankets.” 

“This is three thousand euros,” he says firmly, expression taking on a sharp edge. “How are you going to pay?” 

“Are you kidding me?” Charles scoffs, reaching into his pocket for his wallet. He’s a fucking Formula One driver, the most recognisable in Monaco, and this guy thinks he can’t afford some—ridiciously overpriced—blankets? 

He throws his black card carelessly on the counter, lips pursed in agitation. 

“Identification,” the man repeats.

Matt: Ye so, I wanna talk about another teammate of yours, Yuki Tsunoda. So we've read that you and Yuki go back. He lived with your parents in New Zealand?

Brian: (laughs) No! He didn't live- He didn't live with- Liam: He came to- So this is a series called the "Toyota Racing Series" in New Zealand, used to be like, really really big, especially before Covid. And basically we were both competing in it as teammates, and so he came to New Zealand. And we've been teammates a year before that in F3 and Euro Formula, so I've spent a lot of time with him already. So when he came to New Zealand, he basically just hung out with us. A lot. Like, I basically just drive around with him. Matt: So like step-brothers a little bit? Liam: Honestly, ye. (laughs)

Matt: What was your favorite thing to do with him, growing up?

Liam: It was always away from the track. Cause away from the track, he's a really funny, genuine dude. So, obviously, it's harder. When you are competing, with Yuki, (...) competing for the same seat. So, it's like, at the track, it's real intense. And then, away from that, it's real cool.

Matt: How're you able to maintain a friendship when it's just like, you know, blood sport out there for these few seats?

Liam: At points, over the year, (stammers) you know, it's not a friendship. And then he- Like, obviously, his journey was pushed a lot earlier than mine. He went to F1 quite early so, then I was- I wasn't really in competition with him anymore so- Matt: Right. Does that help your friendship? Liam: Then we are like, pretty chill again. And then we are put in competition again.

Brian: I think in one of the earlier seasons of Drive to Survive, you were in his room, and his room was like, all messy, and he was annoyed that they put it in.

Matt: Did you catch him on a bad day or is that just is? Brian: Is his room just a mess always? Liam: That's literally- I don't know now. Oh actually, I went to his house recently and it was a lot better. Both Hosts: (relieved) Okay! Liam: He has improved. (stammers) I remember, well, it wasn't really- (vocally winces) It was fierce because you shouldn't live like that anyway. BUT!- Both Hosts: (crying laughing emojis in audio form) Liam: But I remember, he had just moved into this apartment at the start of, I think it was the start of that year, and I- Oh no, it was the year before! But same thing, Covid, here, basically. I went to New Zealand because I was about to be locked out of the country. There was no racing. And Yuki stayed, in Milton Keynes for months. Just on (his own), he didn't go back to Japan. Like he just stayed in this apartment. Brian: Like Cast Away Liam: But I had to move into this brand new apartment and it was sick! And I went to New Zealand and I came back 3 months later. Matt: He has got a beard. Liam: And I walked into this place and it was just like DUUDE. It was bad, like it was real bad. Brian: (hums of understanding) Like takeouts and- (all three make noises of agreement) Liam: It was just food everywhere. Like, the laundry basket was just like, overflowing. Liam: But one thing with Yuki that was real funny that we did back when we were in New Zealand.

Liam: I don't know how this is a thing but you can rent a boat, at like 15 or 16 years old. And just take it out, to Lake Taupo. And so me and Yuki were like- I was probably 17 or 18 and he was like 19 or 20, and we just rented this boat, and got like, you know, biscuit, or tube? What do you call them? (...) And we just took it out and basically- It started off like real fun. Like we were just towing each other around. But then it just got like, who could throw the other person off like, the biggest. We just like, tried to kill each other on this little tube, in the middle of this lake. Matt: Just the two of you? Liam: Just the two of us. Just out there in the middle of a lake. Brian: Just the two of you tried to kill each other. Matt: It's like a fucking thriller. Liam: Honestly! I've got videos of like, him and me, like, in the air. Like, meters in the air. Matt: Who won or lost that game? Brian: "We both lost that game." Liam: Actually, I lost pretty hard on that one, to be fair. Matt: He threw you- Liam: I went off like, big time, ye. Brian: It seems like, that's the common experience of tubing, is that. It's like, it's fun and then you're like, am I gonna die? (...)

Matt: So Yuki was a master at flinging you?

Liam: Well, he would like- Sometimes I feel like it's on accident. He would like, get a lot of slack and it will just build up real fast- Both Hosts: Sure, he said it was on accident.

Liam: We're drivers. Everything turns into a competition.

Liam: We had a rental car, again in New Zealand with Yuki, that we like, basically would like, make a little track and just set time trials off the side of the road. Matt: Like with a Camry or something? Liam: No, Yuki had this little Mitsubishi ASX. I don't know if you know what it is, it's like a boxed car. And we, with like a couple of drivers, basically made like, a little track, and, basically goes until somebody- until Yuki crashed it. (...) The funniest thing, it wasn't even in the- He had finished his lap. It was afterward, he tried to be cool and do like a flick spin, and just totally sent it into a bank. We had to go to a store to get one of those plungers to try and plunge out the dent in the front of the- Because we had to get the car back. Brian: Right, of course. Matt: Renters insurance, man. If I see you or Yuki walk into an enterprise or something, I'll just like, go somewhere else.

donnerkeil. part two, yandere!könig x reader

likes, comments, follows ect are all greatly appreciated! 

the first time he laid his eyes on you, his once cold heart began to pound a little faster. his social anxiety seemingly leaving his body behind. you were entering the market, your beautiful hair bounced against the morning golden sun. you walked over to one of the vendors as könig walked behind you, picking up on your accent and otherwise poor german skills. clearly, you weren't a native speaker from around here. he knew that he needed to act fast, who knows when you’d be leaving to go back to your home country. 

from his peripheral vision and occasional inconspicuous glances he would briefly watch you study the candles you picked up and examined. he couldn’t tell what the first one was, second was lemongrass and the last one was lavender. you took a liking to that one as you paid the fare and placed the candle in the basket you held. 

könig played with the honey jar he held whilst mindlessly listening to the vendor explain the fine details in the ingredients contained in the honey, trying her hardest to scrape a few euros out of him. he placed the jar down and picked up a bigger one with a pink gingham ribbon around it, similar to the one in your basket. 

you moved one vendor down. only one away from könig. his heart was racing. how perfect this was. all you needed to do was move down one vendor and he could strike a conversation up with you.

 a natural conversation of course. 

not a conversation he was replaying in his head. 

you picked through a collection of soaps and flowers making careful purchases with each. 

until you say your goodbyes to the seller and moved. you walked to the vendor on the opposite side of the gravel road. you were behind him on the other side of the street. 

he missed his opportunity. quickly, könig said his thank yous and put the honey back in its respective place it was in before. the vendor you were stood at was a vendor from a small family run bakery. he liked their baked goods and he knew the person at the table.

fuck it. 

he walked over to an open spot to stand beside you. he gave you a greeting in german with a smile painted across his lips now fully being able to see your face and your perfect features. he would kill everyone within a mile just to hug you for mere seconds. you returned the greeting with a meek wave, filled with nervousness. in your hands was a topfenstrudel wrapped in a plastic sheet held together with a black zip tie. könig made a positive comment on how lovley the pastry was (especially when warm) nodding towards the boy running the booth. that comment alone convinced you enough to purchase it. 

“ihr sachertorte ist auch gut” he paused before speaking again, “magst du sachertorte? he smiled, picking up a container with the famous austrian pastry placed inside. 

you hummed in confusion with a puzzled look on your face. “was ist sachertorte?” and his suspicion was right. how could you not know? foreigner. 

“it’s a chocolate cake. native to austria.” chuckling, he gave the seller the requested amount of euros for cake. “you’re not from here, huh?” he placed the cake in a bag given to him then turning to you. “perhaps i can show you around more...later on”.
