“Found the best seats in the whole train, I see,” he remarked, pressing his hands against his wet forehead to move his fringe out of his face. He wondered if it was his sweat dripping down his back or just pure distilled sarcasm.

Lee put the tickets back into his back pocket and then wiped his hands sheepishly over his sides. “It’s not so bad,” he said, shrugging. There was a beginning of a smile playing on his lips though.

“Let me guess,” Gaara said as he stepped in. He closed the door, barricading a portion of the heat outside. “There was an old couple that had nowhere to sit, so you let her take our seats.”

Lee sat down, smiling over at him.

“Mother with a child?” Gaara guessed again.

Lee’s smile widened.

“A pack of puppies?” 

A laugh filled the compartment, snatched away by the whizzing wind before it could settle in Gaara’s chest.

“If I had known you’d change your mind, I’d have kept the original seats,” Lee said when he was done laughing.

“Lies.” Gaara snorted, throwing his backpack at one of the free seats and plopping down opposite of Lee.

Hector reaches out and places a hand carefully on the brain stem, feeling the unpleasant, slimy warm pulsing under his palm. Pain shoots down his arm, a psychic blast of connection, the image of the brain hovering in his mind.

With effort, he shakes it away, tries to ignore the feeling of his own exhaustion. Focus. Breathe.

Karlach steps up next to him, rests a hand on his shoulder and looks up at the immense tract of pink flesh leading up to the brain. "Y'know, Hec," she says dryly, "we've done some really stupid shit in the last few months, but I think this might be the stupidest."

"I was just thinking the same thing," he says with a slight smile. "Can't think of anyone else I'd rather do such stupid things with."

"Nicest thing you've ever said to me, lover..." A grin cracks across her face as well.

Jaheira smiles, spinning one knife in her hand. Lae'zel sets her jaw, raises her silver sword in his direction. He feels a flash of gratitude and courage, knowing that he is not alone in this moment. They are indomitable.

Not giving himself time to second guess, he reaches up and sinks his fingers into the sticky flesh of the brain and begins to climb.

The brain screams through their minds as they ascend towards it. As if hoping to escape this new onslaught, it surges upwards away from the city, the stem thrashing in alarm.

"Oh, FUCK!" Hector bellows; one of his hands slips free and for a terrifying moment he thinks he's going to fall. A great wave of vertigo goes through him as the city spirals dizzily beneath him.

"HOLY SHIT!" he hears Karlach shouting below, followed by a string of blistering githyanki curses.

Then, from Jaheira, steady as always although taut with fear-- "Do not look down! At peril of your life, do not! CLIMB!"

He climbs.

It is a horrifying passage that seems to last about a thousand years, but eventually he manages to heave himself over the edge of the platform that rings the brain's crest. His arms feel like jelly, his legs are trembling, and he pitches forward onto the ground and lays there for a moment, gasping for breath, only moving to scoot aside while the others climb up behind him.

Narrator: There it is, the Crown of Karsus. The site of power, the site of domination.

"Looks like that Crown could use some Netherstones," Karlach says grimly between her own gasps for breath. "If those things were ever going to work, it's now."

Hector turns to gesture towards Orpheus-- but is interrupted by the sound of a dragon swooping in above them. He swallows down the automatic fear, knowing it must be Voss coming to join them for this final act...

but he is wrong.

The dragon's eyes glow with possession, and astride it sits the Emperor, its whole expression somehow full of rage despite its immobility. It climbs slowly from the dragon's back and stares Hector down balefully.

Hector looks back steadily, resisting the urge to flinch away from that laser-focused gaze.

The Emperor doesn't speak, but flicks a hand in a sharp gesture in front of him.

A series of dark, fleshy pods spring into being form within the brain. Each of them twists, undulates, cracks open to reveal a figure inside.

A face all too familiar - the visage with which the Emperor first looked at him. The square-jawed orc woman whose air of tranquility made Hector believe, for a time, that its guidance could be trusted.

Hector feels a churn of agitated dismay work through his chest. Why does it hurt so much to see that face, after so many months? Why on some level does he still wish the alliance could have worked out?

"Your Dream Visitors, I take it?" Jaheira quips sardonically. "I thought they would be prettier."

"I know you," the Emperor growls. Its unchanging voice nevertheless drips with malice. "I know everything about you. Your thoughts, your feelings, your weaknesses." Its tentacles twitch angrily. "And so do they."

im just nervous about my first real animation work for a studio….its just some short bumper commissions for their social media but i’m getting notes on the concept visdev stuff i sent over and its freaking me out how real this all is!! its exciting but im just feeling really out of it with anxiety -_-
