vess is deeply afraid of drowning & bodies of water. he doesn't know how to swim, and his history with drowning still affects him physically to this day. his father's idea of endurance training was to push vess to and beyond his limits. one of these regular practices was to hold vess' head under water, hand fisted in his hair, until he by all definitions drowned. vess has had water forcefully expelled from his lungs more times than he can count, and it's caused long-lasting physical and psychological damage.

this water training is why vess does not let people touch his hair, or only allows them to touch it if he can see their hand/arm.

it is also why vess' voice is as deep as it is, and why he's highly susceptible to respiratory infections. infection and recurring illness in childhood that stemmed from the fluid in his lungs changed the landscape of his lungs, throat, and vocal cords.

he still gets frequently ill to this day, lung problems persist and he has to practice specific, highly controlled breathing patterns when he exercises or fights, in order to keep from ending up breathless or wheezing.

hate how so much of adult friendship relies on updates, experiencing your life through pictures and tidbits. we had it good with childhood friends, could spend years and years basking in the same circumstance. now i just float through clouds of strangers, hungry for something solid and warm. yes i carry your heart within mine, yes i see the world through your eyes. but in that very moment i still feel alone, still know it's poor substitute for same room, twin smiles.

Saw a post about helping people that used the analogy of "if you see someone fall off a cruiseship and theres a life preserver ring on the wall next to you do you walk away or do you throw them the life preserver? Of course you throw them the life preserver." And i dont want to add to or tag the post with any sort of correction because its literally not the point at all but i am desperate to say that the first thing they teach you when you work on a cruise ship is that if someone falls overboard you Do Not Look Away

If theres a life preserver nearby but you have to turn your back to get it, tough luck. If theres someone nearby who can't hear you but you could run and get them, absolutely not. You see someone go overboard you point at them and never ever let them out of your sight because looking away even once could mean losing them forever, so you just have to trust that someone will hear you scream for help but you cant for any reason look away

And maybe that adds to the life preserver metaphor somehow but mostly i just need you to know if you spot someone in the water you point at them and you watch them close and you scream for help
