Deuce Info Compilation Part 1: Deuce's Mom

Deuce first references his mother during Book 1 when it is revealed that he was “the only man of the house”, so he would help her with the heavy lifting that resulted from when she would “stock up” during sales.

Deuce references helping his mother during sales again in his PE vignette, where he uses the skills he learned as a child to help Sebek acquire pudding for Lilia (“I can’t tell you how many times I was barreled down over a single carton of eggs.”)

Deuce reveals that he had been able to shop for Trey and others at the dorm during the chaos of Sam’s sale, and Sebek compliments him as “a gifted human indeed”.

We get the story of Deuce’s past for the first time during Book 1 when he explains that he had been “wild” when he was younger (“yobisute” was changed to “I called my teachers names” as English does not have honorifics)

He says his change of heart was inspired by overhearing his mother crying about “how she must have been a horrible mom, and that maybe she never should have tried to raise me by herself.” Deuce insists on taking responsibility for his past actions, saying “She hadn’t done anything wrong. It was all me.” When he was accepted to NRC, he “decided then and there that this time, I wouldn’t do anything to make her cry. This time, I’d become an honor student—someone she could be proud of.”

The topic of his mother arises during Wish Upon a Star, as well, with Deuce saying that he once heard her wish for him to stop fighting and live a healthy life.

Deuce’s mother calls him twice during the Wish Upon a Star event, and the first time leads to a conversation with Silver where he says that his old friends used to make fun of him for being so close to her. Silver says, “It’s only natural you’d want to talk regularly with someone you care about.” 

Deuce shares a summarized version of his past with Silver and we learn that, due to his poor reputation, Deuce would get accused of things that he’d had nothing to do with.

He says, “Of course I got a huge attitude when people wouldn’t believe me. Looking back, though, they had every reason not to.” We learn that the only people who ever believed him were his mother and a neighborhood police officer who would always insist on hearing his side of a story and prove that he had an alibi when people tried to frame Deuce for things he hadn’t done.

Deuce says that, “If I could be like that, maybe my mom wouldn’t worry for much”. Deuce explains that this is why he wants to be a police officer when he is older: more specifically, a part of an agency that handles magical crimes, referred to as “magic marshals”. 

Deuce’s mother calls him again at the end of Wish Upon a Star to tell him that “Even Night Raven College couldn’t have asked for a finer Stargazer than you” and “You know I’m very proud of you”, which nearly makes Deuce cry. He says, “One of these days, I’m gonna make my mom happy by making an even bigger wish come true.”

Deuce brings up his dream of joining the police force again in his birthday vignette, saying that he he has put most of his effort into “media research”, watching movies and TV and memorizing “intense-looking running styles” and “cool-sounding one-liners to use when making an arrest”.

Deuce mentions his mother often: in the Culinary Crucible he talks about wanting to “learn how to cook good meals for when I’m at home”, saying that his mother would “always cook egg dishes for my birthday” and “now I know what mom means when she says she adds a pinch of love to her cooking”.

We learn that Deuce would help his mother cook as a child. He says that he recently learned that she’d had a cold, but she didn’t let him know until after she had fully recovered. Deuce says “I kinda wish she’d lean on me more when she’s struggling” and “the next time I visit, I want to cook for her and show that I’m more dependable than ever!”

When Crowley and Ortho threaten to expose the students for not going to rescue Idia from Eliza during the Phantom Bride event Deuce’s reaction is “my mom would cry if she saw me on the news like that”.

He also mentions his mother waiting for him during Winter Holidays, something he wants to buy but cannot afford and how he does not want to ask him mom for money, the curry she would make, sending her a picture of his halloween costume, helping her with household appliances and more.

“It’s exactly like a Greek Tragedy. There should only be Greeks.”

I swear to God this is my favourite fucking line in ‘Restless’. It’s not just the truth of it. It’s that it’s Anya that says it - but it’s also that it’s also not… because it’s Willow’s dream: everything is in her perspective.

This is how she perceives of Anya perceiving her.

She somehow knows - doesn’t know when or where - that she’s going to fall into her Greek Tragedy. The same way she knew she was “bad” in ‘Bad Girls’. The same way she knew she was a “loser” and a “geek”.

Out of her insecurities/anxieties/repressed emotions.

But also the layered mental mechanism she has of how she thinks OTHERS perceive of her because it.

Her dream in ‘Restless’ is so fucking clever and profound because it’s just so truthful to that.

On the surface it’s imposter syndrome but there’s just so much more going on in that girl’s head that you can’t completely put it down to that or any condition that she has actually - because they’re all part of her complex trauma. They’re all part of her Greek Tragedy.

And because it’s ANYA. Anya - the one character in the show that Willow butts heads with most. Anya - constantly commenting on how useless and worthless Willow is. Anya - seeing Willow’s dark side arguably before anyone else really did. Anya - always wary of what Willow could become if she accumulated as much power as she once had as a vengeance demon.

It’s not just that the line said is the truth of it.

It’s that they picked the PERFECT character to say it.

And that of course - OF COURSE - Willow would unconsciously choose Anya to be the one who does.

‘Restless’ is not just excellent character arc foreshadowing. It’s also excellent at showing and telling us what we already know but may have overlooked because we’ve never considered it relevant until we look back on when and where it happened and how it informs all that is to come. Is becoming. It’s your honest look-in to who all these main characters are. But I just find Willow’s dream to be the most profound because she’s undecided on who that is. And she’s not only undecided - she’s also unaware.

That’s why she has EVERYONE ELSE say it for her. Because if they see it in her, then it must be true right? Except no, it’s not. It’s only true because she worries it is. Because she thinks it is. Because she believes it is. And that’s why it’s so damn clever and profound. Because it’s a whole construct of Willow’s perception. None of it is true - at the time. But it ends up true because self-sabotage and self-corruption is possible. So when Joss is making a case for imposter syndrome in this dream… it’s only half-accurate… because the only real condition Willow has is her own self-doubt.

And she never would have fallen from grace otherwise.

Okay… I just have to carry this on. Let’s look at ‘Buffy’ in Willow’s dream both when she’s in “costume” in the “play” and when she’s not. What she says to and about Willow. And by extension - what Willow says to and about herself. Think about all the lines “Buffy” has in Willow’s dream. All the quirky cryptic one-liners.

Even her whole “Men and Sales” monologue.

Why is Willow NOT this character in her dream?

Why does Willow not perceive of HERSELF as the one confident and outspoken and competent?

Why does she unconsciously give Buffy this persona?

Because it’s how she sees Buffy!

And therefore it’s also how she DOESN’T see herself.

And then when they’re not playing characters and they’re not in costume, why is Buffy suddenly so course and harsh in the way she speaks to Willow?

Why is SHE the one to expose Willow’s greatest fear?

Because when Willow’s around her - she is nothing special. She is nothing to look at and be in awe of. She’s not of any use or value when the Slayer is there

Except… she ends up being THE ONLY REASON the Slayer is there. So is what she believes the objective truth of her? No, it isn’t. It evidently can’t be the truth.

It only is because she chronically FEARS that it is. And fears can do some messed up shit to our psyche until we eventually see them for what they are. Just fears.

3. Ein Fall, den man einfach gesehen haben muss?

Ein Mörderisches Märchen. Auch ein Münchner und so verdammt gut. (Und ja es ist wieder ein dem Kommissar bekanntes Kind, das zum ersten und einzigen Mal auftritt in Danger, aber der Folge verzeihe ich sogar das, weil sie es so gut macht)

5. Welche Ermittler*innen-Dynamik sollte es geben?

Vor etwa 53748 Jahren hatte ich genau diese Diskussion mit einer Freundin, und nachdem ich mein Tatort Dream-Team beschrieben habe, meinte sie "Du willst Konstanz, aber er ist schwul" und damit hatte sie recht. Und seitdem habe ich nicht so viel über diese Frage nachgedacht. Was ich generell so mal sehen möchte:

ein Frauenteam, dass sich nicht von Anfang an misstraut und anzickt, weil eine vermutet, die andere hätte den Job nur wegen Papi/Mami bekommen hat und eigentlich eine Gefahr im Außendienst ist, weil unfähig (spreche ich über Dresden oder Zürich? Trick Question. Both), und wenn möglich dann auch später kein Drama, weil eine auf den Mann von der anderen steht :') Ja, "Sie können sich nicht ausstehen und raufen sich dann zusammen" is as old as dirt, aber irgendwann hatte ich dann (geschlechtsunabhängig) das Gefühl, dass mit dem "nicht ausstehen können" übertrieben wurde, und das "zusammenraufen" vergessen, aber zumindest bei reinen Männerteams hat sich das etwas gebessert. Frauen müssen sich aber immer noch 3+ Folgen anzicken weil...Frauen können doch gar nicht anders? Right?

Ein Heteroteam, dass ganz klischeehaft kurz bevor oder kurz nachdem sie ein Team wurden einen ONS hatten und dann...nichts weiter passiert. Sie stellen fest, dass es einfach nicht klappt. Niemand ist deswegen bitter. Niemand ist eifersüchtig, wenn der:die andere jemand anderen hat. In der letzten Folge stellen sie nicht fest, dass sie sich doch lieben. Sie sind einfach Freunde und glücklich damit. Ja ich weiß, ich bin here dangerously close to "how about we have some healthy relationships in our copaganda shows?" How silly of me

Ohhh und das was Stuttgart am Anfang gemacht hat nur halt in...gut. Also Ermittler + Staatsanwaltschaft + Kriminaltechnik als Team, das jetzt vielleicht privat nicht die besten Freunde sind, die dauern zusammen abhängen, aber sich trotzdem gut versteht, und sich umeinander sorgt. Stuttgart hat das am Anfang versucht, und dann irgendwie vergessen? Fairerweiße sind die Schauspielerinnen von Staatsanwältin und Kriminaltechnikerin auch irgendwann ausgestiegen, aber das zu einem Zeitpunkt, wo ihre Rollen schon so klein geworden sind, dass mir erst 3-4 Folgen später aufgefallen ist, dass sie nicht mehr da sind. (NB: Ja ich weiß, es gibt da noch ein anderes Team, in dem diese Rollen recht prominent sind und nein, so meine ich es nicht)

17. Ein Tatort-Zitat, das du auch im Alltag benutzt?

Keines? Glaube ich. Ehrlichgesagt finde ich, dass Tatort jetzt nicht the most quotable show ist. Sonst hätte ich mir schon ein kitschiges Kreuzstichbild für die Küche gebastelt. OK, Münster hat ein paar gute One-Liner, aber die sind jetzt auch so speziell, dass die Sprüche, die Thiel seinem Vater oder Boerne um die Ohren haut nicht unbedingt im Alltag tauglich sind.

04/11: me and my friend jules with our cute sanrio cigarette cases. i gifted the hello kitty one to jules and kept the my melody one. jules is cool and smokes marlboro reds, i'm a princess so i smoke menthols. this is truly one of my most prized possessions.

16/11: they were having this event for mom's that had small businesses at the school i work in and i got this crocheted togepi.

17/11: me holding a mac cherry lip liner that i got at the airport. things at the airport are usually soooo expensive but they were having a sale at the mac counter. ever since i was a little girl, i've always dreamed of buying makeup from mac but never did because of the price. but now that i have a job i was finally able to get my first mac lipstick earlier this year – a ruby woo. then recently i got myself a russian red. i'm usually a liquid lipstick girlie so i don't really buy lip liners, but ever since i got those mac lipsticks i've been really into bullet lipsticks, so i go this lip liner to match with both of my new red lippies.

18/11: well i took this pic the day i was going to see taylor swift but the concert got delayed because of the heat. it kinda sucked because we've been there for HOURS and they delayed it just before the concert was going to start, but i'm glad it all worked out at the end.

20/11: the day i actually saw taylor swift. after the concert got delayed, oomf took me in cause i had nowhere to stay for two extra days. i'm so grateful that the internet made it possible for me to have such good friends from all around the globe. we spent the entire morning making friendship bracelets, this is a tayla swiff bracelet. tayla swiff, according to the las culturistas podcast, is the pop girly taylor swift, not to be mistaken with taylor swift, singer-songwriter. i really loved making friendship bracelets, i didn't make any on my own before the concert but i liked making and wearing them so much that i'm getting the materials to make some.

21/11: one of the things i really wanted to do in rio was to have this mate drink with mint that you can't get in my city. because of everything that happened i wasn't able to get it in rio but i got one at the bus terminal in sao paulo. the trip back home fucking sucked but i was happy i was able to get my drink.
