Thanks to user @thestarsarewinning for pointing out the visual parallel; now I can't get it out of my head.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The side wound of Christ also comes with its own set of implications that are very apt for what is being revealed here -- medieval mystics were a wild bunch y'all. I have so many thoughts about the dynamics between these two, none of them coherent at this point. Unwavering faith given freely in the face of doubt, devotion that transcends the boundaries of the sacred and the profane -- dear god Harris/Straughan why would you write something like this *buries face in hand and sobs*
1. SALUTARE TUUM*, white charcoal on black paper, 8 × 5 "
2. The Incredulity of Saint Thomas by Caravaggio
*'[For mine eyes have seen] thy salvation' from the Nunc Dimittis.
This is all very 'old man yelling at clouds'-esque; you'd have to physically gag me to make me shut up about this movie.

god is dead and gone and you’re just another statistic of religious brainwashing. Rip đŸ™đŸ»
And you’ll never even know. You can’t even wake up
Dear Jesus,
I pray over this one man or woman who doubts. kinda reminds me of doubting Thomas. Please work in his or her heart, let them know who you are rather than who they perceive you as.
Thanks and Amen.
Friend, I don't know your situation. Maybe you might have had a bad experience with religious people. I dunno. But Jesus had problems with them too. Crumbs, they killed Him. But He rose on the third day and forgave all sin. He wants a relationship with you. It's not a religion. Not a scam.
There's plenty of proof of His existence too, it's fascinating!
If you wish to talk more, you can message me!
God bless!
-Grace

The Incredulity of Saint Thomas
Artist: Rembrandt (Dutch, 1606–1669)
Date: 1634
Medium: Oil on oak wood
Collection: Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow, Russia
Jesus Appears to Thomas
Jesus Appears to Thomas | John 20:24-29, NIV
Now Thomas (also known as Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”
But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”
A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”
Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

You want to have unwavering faith? Learn from demons and lepers
In the Gospel of Mark, we encounter extraordinary examples of faith in unexpected places- a demon and a man with leprosy.
Mark 1:23-24(NIV)> Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”
The title "Holy One of God" shows Jesus' special status and divine power, even recognized by demons.
It's surprising and important that a demon acknowledges who Jesus is, showing His true power.
While many people struggled to understand Jesus, the demon knew right away.
If even demons can see who Jesus is, we should confidently affirm our faith in Him as the Holy One of God.
Mark 1:40(NIV) >A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.”
The leper's use of "if" shows he fully believed in Jesus' power. He didn't doubt Jesus could heal, he knew it for sure. The question was whether Jesus would choose to do it for him personally.
If a leper could have so much faith in Jesus' power, how can we not? This challenges us to trust Jesus' ability and have faith in His decisions for our lives.
If demons and lepers could have such faith in Christ, how much more should we, who have been redeemed and made righteous by His blood?(Romans 5:9) Let us be encouraged by their example and approach Jesus with unwavering faith, knowing that He is able and willing to meet our needs.
𝄞 to reaffirm your faithđŸ‘ŒđŸ» :

Do you every think about how God allowed Christ's hands and side to stay scarred just for Thomas, like we didn't need that, it's simply symbolic to us. Only Thomas did, he needed to see it to believe, he needed it to fuel his witness, God may have rebuked him for doubting, but he still made sure he had the proof he needed. That was his.

okay so i am obsessed with how conclave explores/uses the imagery of doubting thomas and the transformation of cardinal lawrence’s faith and prayer throughout the conclave and after benitez is elected, and this has led me to an intense research spiral.
all of this to say i think everyone here needs to appreciate Caravaggio’s The Incredulity of Saint Thomas and how the filmmakers used aspects of this
Tumblr media
(this is the secular version, the difference between this and the ecclesiastical version is that you can see jesus’ bare thigh whilst the ecclesiastical version has him otherwise fully covered. scandalous)
i unfortunately described this to my friend as a portrayal of doubting thomas being knuckles deep in jesus [three second pause] ‘s chest wound.
some of my favourite quotes about The Incredulity:

and, if we look at the final scene with lawrence and benitez, it becomes very clear that conclave’s cinematographer stĂ©phane fontaine deserves an award
