Camera-trapping data revealed in a new study show a steady recovery of tigers in Thailand’s Western Forest Complex over the past two decades.
The tiger recovery has been mirrored by a simultaneous increase in the numbers of the tigers’ prey animals, such as sambar deer and types of wild cattle.
The authors attribute the recovery of the tigers and their prey to long-term efforts to strengthen systematic ranger patrols to control poaching as well as efforts to restore key habitats and water sources.
Experts say the lessons learnt can be applied to support tiger recovery in other parts of Thailand and underscore the importance of the core WEFCOM population as a vital source of tigers repopulating adjacent landscapes.
The tiger population density in a series of protected areas in western Thailand has more than doubled over the past two decades, according to new survey data.
Thailand is the final stronghold of the Indochinese tiger (Panthera tigris corbetti), the subspecies having been extirpated from neighboring Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam over the past decade due to poaching, habitat loss and indiscriminate snaring...
Fewer than 200 tigers are thought to remain in Thailand’s national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, only a handful of which are sufficiently undisturbed and well-protected to preserve breeding tigers.
The most important of these protected areas for tigers is the Huai Kha Khaeng Thung Yai (HKK-TY) UNESCO World Heritage Site, which comprises three distinct reserves out of the 17 that make up Thailand’s Western Forest Complex (WEFCOM). Together, these three reserves — Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary, Thungyai Naresuan West and Thungyai Naresuan East — account for more than a third of the entire WEFCOM landscape.
Now, a new study published in Global Ecology and Conservation documents a steady recovery of tigers within the HKK-TY reserves since camera trap surveys began in 2007. The most recent year of surveys, which concluded in November 2023, photographed 94 individual tigers, up from 75 individuals in the previous year, and from fewer than 40 in 2007.
Healthy tiger families
The study findings reveal that the tiger population grew on average 4% per year in Hua Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary, the largest and longest-protected of the reserves, corresponding to an increase in tiger density from 1.3 tigers per 100 square kilometers, to 2.9 tigers/100 km2.
“Tiger recoveries in Southeast Asia are few, and examples such as these highlight that recoveries can be supported outside of South Asia, where most of the good news [about tigers] appears to come from,” said Abishek Harihar, tiger program director for Panthera, the global wildcat conservation organization, who was not involved in the study.
Among the camera trap footage gathered in HKK-TY over the years were encouraging scenes of healthy tiger families, including one instance of a mother tiger and her three grownup cubs lapping water and lounging in a jacuzzi-sized watering hole. The tiger family stayed by the water source for five days during the height of the dry season.
The team of researchers from Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, the Wildlife Conservation Society, Kasetsart University, and India’s Center for Wildlife Studies deployed camera traps at more than 270 separate locations throughout the HKK-TY reserves, amassing 98,305 days’ worth of camera-trap data over the 19-year study period.
Using software that identifies individual tigers by their unique stripe patterns, they built a reference database of all known tigers frequenting the three reserves. A total of 291 individual tigers older than 1 year were recorded, as well as 67 cubs younger than 1 year [over the course of the study].
Ten of the tigers were photographed in more than one of the reserves, indicating their territories straddled the reserve boundaries. The authors conclude that each of the three reserves has a solid breeding tiger population and that, taken together, the HKK-TY landscape is a vital source of tigers that could potentially repopulate surrounding areas where they’ve been lost. This is supported by cases of known HKK-TY tigers dispersing into neighboring parts of WEFCOM and even across the border into Myanmar.
Conservation efforts pay off
Anak Pattanavibool, study co-author and Thailand country director at the Wildlife Conservation Society, told Mongabay that population models that take into account the full extent of suitable habitat available to tigers within the reserves and the likelihood that some tigers inevitably go undetected by camera surveys indicate there could be up to 140 tigers within the HKK-YT landscape.
Anak told Mongabay the tiger recovery is a clear indication that conservation efforts are starting to pay off. In particular, long-term action to strengthen systematic ranger patrols to control poaching as well as efforts to boost the tigers’ prey populations seem to be working, he said.
“Conservation success takes time. At the beginning we didn’t have much confidence that it would be possible [to recover tiger numbers], but we’ve been patient,” Anak said. For him, the turning point came in 2012, when authorities arrested and — with the aid of tiger stripe recognition software — prosecuted several tiger-poaching gangs operating in Huai Kha Khaeng. “These cases sent a strong message to poaching gangs and they stopped coming to these forests,” he said."
...ranger teams have detected no tiger poaching in the HKK-TY part of WEFCOM since 2013.

I work for insane people
So… I started work a few months ago and...
I keep being impressed with corporations lowering my expectations.
Like. EVERY time I think "Surely, this is as incompetent as it gets".
The boss is nice, the workers are nice, every PERSON is great so far. But the firm is just… fucked in ways that makes it hard to not scream with laughter.
It is like working in the ministry of silly walks by Monty Python. Insane things are happening, and everyone just acts like it is normal.
A dude was stating to someone else near me, that despite the costumers saying they did not want it, his code that crashed the application once a day, was NECESSARY, because writing code without memory leaks in C is basically impossible. Like… I just have all these small moments of insanity. Completely disconnected from each-other
My boss showing me and the other 3 new hires the coffee room, where a big screen proudly shows that not a single software product have 100% code coverage… as in, not a single person in this entire building filled with software people knows how code coverage works. He then points out an empty bowl, and declares "Twice a week, there is a fruit event". By which he means, fresh fruit is provided, and people can just grab some…. just said by a alien who is pretending to be human. Badly.
He then explained that the 2 coffee machines in here makes bad coffee. He then takes us to the copy room, showing us that THIS is where the GOOD coffee machine is. Which only takes coffee beans from a SPECIFIC vendor (Is… is the coffee machine… sponsored????)
He briefly pets the Foosball table (Again, in the copy room), which is jammed up against the wall so you can only reach the controls on one side ( Because, again, it is a copy room, and there is not enough space for it ) and he exclaims "Ahhhh… Not enough people are using this"
Suggesting, that he is trying to promote the little known sport "Single-player Foosball">
I start setting up my work PC and... Whenever any of the developers in this place wants to install things on their PC's, including compilers and testing frameworks, they have to either use the "SOFTWARE CENTER" program, which installs it FOR you… or in 10% of the cases, fails, without giving you any context for why it did that, and no tools for fixing it. Is it missing a dependency? Not working with the OS? Who knows!
Some programs cannot be installed like this though, because the SOFTWARE CENTER is not updated a lot. And when you want to install something the normal way… You get a popup, where you must provide a written explanation for why you need to have temporary admin rights to your own dang PC … you then submit that, and your screen will then be watched remotely by a worker from India, for a varied amount of time you are not told
Or at least it says so. Maybe the Indian dude watching me is just an empty threat. Who knows. But they get to see me running absolutely… BONKERS .bat files
Like, I CHECKED them, and a good 80% of them calls a Power-Shell script in the folder above it, called "YES_OR_NO.ps1" which opens a windows 95 window informing you that DURING INSTALLATION YOU MAY NOT USE THE KEYBOARD OR MOUSE, AS IT MAY DISTURB THE SCRIPT THAT WILL INSTALL THE PROGRAM. A normal installation wizard then runs, except the developers are not trusted to click the buttons, and instead the script does it for you by moving and clicking the mouse.
All of this is documented. In markdown like reasonable people? Of course not! It is in ENHANCED markdown. Which is markdown in the same way javascript is java.
ENHANCED markdown requires browser and visual studio code extensions to be read. Completely missing the point of markdown being readable both raw and encoded… And sometimes word documents And sometimes power-point presentations left next to another bat file… this one calling the .exe file… right next to it…. I later found out is because the idea USED to be that all documentation MUST be made with Microsoft office tools.
I had to read the code of conduct today. And it was actually very well written.
I then watched a interactive animation telling me about the code of conduct… which it not only got a fact wrong about, it also broke it once.
I repeat. The introductory course in the code of conduct… broke the code of conduct'
After I watched that, and read the safety material…. which literally just said "Wear safety boots in the production floor"… I was then show the testing room.
I was lead to a different building, saying hello to the Vice CEO who was walking the other way, we walk into the production floor, ignored the fact that none of us have safety boots on, and walks into a room, with a 3*2 meter wide machine, several meters tall.
We edge around it, quietly hoping no one turns it on, since we would get slammed by it if they did, and walk down some stairs into the basement. Casually walk over a small river in the floor from a pipe that is leaking… what I really hope is water, and over to a shelf rack FILLED with the most MacGyver shit you ever did see.
Including, but not limited to, the 3D printed plastic block, with a piston that repeatedly smacking half a aluminum nameplate over the device it is testing. You see, it is a capacitance button, and it is testing it by simulating a human finger pressing it many thousands of times, a saws off antenna which is the end of a cable that is attached to it via a nice thick bolt, so it can send fake signals into it.
And of course the 24 volt, 5 amp system that is turning a circuit board on and off again, until it will crack.
We walk back out, remembering to step over the small river, which never even got a comment, and walk back to my department It is SO great. It is like working in the ministry of silly walks by Monty Python Like… Do I think I can bring value to this company? Like, making it better and more efficient? Yes. It would be hard not to!
And his is the largest pump manufacturer in the world! A super serious company with 4 billion dollars of revenue a year. And it is just… a NUTHOUSE
Like… NEVER believe the myth that corporations are competent.

The Rohtas Fort (قلعہِ روہتاس), 1540
Watercolour of the ruins of Rohtas Fort, by Charlotte Canning, 1860
Charlotte Canning was the wife of Charles Canning, the first Viceroy of India. She was a watercolor artist who captured the landscapes and architecture of India during the British colonial era. Her artwork, created during her travels around the subcontinent, provides a peek into 19th-century colonial perspectives.
I have chosen these particular paintings because Rohtas Fort is tied to the history of the land my family lives in, standing on the opposite side of the GT road from my paternal relatives’ home in Dina, Jhelum. Seeing Canning’s watercolors of the fort stirs conflicting emotions in me. Her paintings beautifully captures it, but they also remind me of the colonial context in which they were created—a perspective far removed from the lived realities of the people here.
Of course, Canning herself occupies a complex position in this history. I can't help but wonder what it was like for her as a woman in 19th-century British society. She was undoubtedly constrained by the rigid gender roles of her time, even as she held a position of immense privilege as Vicereine. Her art may have served as one of the few socially acceptable outlets for her creativity, but it was still shaped by the colonial structures that defined her life. This duality of limited personhood and systemic power and control is conflicting, at the very least.
This is not to say that her gendered experience absolves the part she plays in the colonial system. These paintings, while a form of self-expression, were created from a vantage point steeped in imperial privilege, documenting a land and its heritage without engaging with the realities of the people who built it or those who lived under colonial rule. They exist within a broader framework of cultural production that often served to justify and sustain the exploitation of the working masses in India.
Canning’s watercolors, in this sense, are an agonizing reminder of how art can both express personal struggles and reinforce systems of oppression. They celebrate the architectural feats of the past while being detached from the lives of those whose labor and histories were erased or exploited by British colonialism. It’s this tension —between the beauty of her work, the limitations of her gendered experience, and the power dynamics of an empire — that leaves me grappling with her work and its place in our shared, complex, history.
Watercolour of the Rani Mahal tower of Rohtas Fort, by Charlotte Canning, 1860
The Fort has its own history which I feel at odds with. A UNESCO World Heritage site, it reflects the power struggles and exploitation that shaped the subcontinent. Built by Sher Shah Suri in the 16th century, it served as a military stronghold, constructed through the labor and resources of local communities whose stories remain untold. Over centuries, it shifted from a symbol of imperial dominance under the Mughals to administrative use by the British, embodying systems of exploitation. Its story is as much about the empires that rose and fell around it as it is about the people who built, inhabited, and lived in its shadow.
This post has been inspired by Salman Rashid's From Landi Kotal To Wagah: Cultural Heritage Along The Grand Trunk Road, as well as my personal connection to the area this fort is built on.
Refined ideas with AI.

Journey Through Japan's Rich Culture
Japan's culture has changed over the years greatly. There are many things that have changed and are steeped in culture such as religion, art, and language. Japan's religion mostly consists of shinto and buddhism. There is of course a small group of people that are of other religions like christianity and islam. Shinto I learned is an ethnic religion that mainly focuses on ceremonies. People of this religion believe in spirits that stem from nature so the main goal of this religion is to strengthen one's bond with nature's spirits. Buddhism I found out originated in India and traveled all the way through SouthEast Asia. Buddhism's main focus is on karma and the cycle of rebirth. So where you stand in society is unimportant cause what is important is in your good and bad deeds.
Japan has many different types of art such as visual art, art installations and even art through traditional clothing. Japan appears to use art as a way to express their deep and rich culture. Brush strokes are a very important and early form of art for Japan. It is believed brush art was the most natural and easiest to control.
Japanese language Japanese has evolved greatly throughout the years. Early Japanese I found steams from Chinese and the first documented old Japanese was found in a Chinese document. Japanese consists of three scripts, Kanji which are Chinese characters, hiragana, and Katakana. Something interesting I found was that Japanese vocabulary consists of 49% words from China, 33% of Japanese origin and the last 18% are from around the world.

Recent Reading: The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida and The Birth Lottery by Shehan Karunatilaka
The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida is, of course, last year's Booker winner, a slightly out-of-nowhere choice for an award that has been getting more adventurous and interesting in recent years. The Birth Lottery and Other Surprises is a collection of Karunatilaka's short fiction, currently slated for publication in the US and UK in the spring, but I was able to snag a copy from India earlier this month. Taken together, they not only make for some engrossing and delightful reading, but reveal Karunatilaka as firmly embedded in the SFF tradition. There's an entirely defensible case for Seven Moons as a nominee in the upcoming Hugo awards (or if not that, one of the wider-ranging genre awards like the Crawford or World Fantasy), and my only real complaint about The Birth Lottery is that it doesn't include a publication history, making it impossible to know which of the stories in it are awards-eligible.
The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida begins with the violent death of its protagonist. Maali is (or rather was) a war photographer, compulsive gambler, and inveterate hopper into the beds of handsome young men. In 1990 Sri Lanka, any one of these might have been enough to get him killed. He could have been murdered over a gambling debt, or by his closeted but intensely jealous boyfriend, DD. He could have fallen victim to any of the war-torn country's violent factions—the Tamil Tigers, the communist JVP, or the government bent on stamping out both and not too fussed about rounding up innocents in the process—all of whose atrocities he has, at one point or another, documented.
Maali himself has no memory of his death, but as the impassive clerks who greet him in the afterlife's waiting room inform him, this is irrelevant. He has seven nights (or "moons") to make peace with the life he's finished living and make himself ready for The Light. Otherwise, they warn, he will be left as a wandering spirit, unable to get back on the wheel of reincarnation and prey to any number of ghostly beings that wander the world. Maali himself, a cynic and nihilist who still hasn't resigned himself to the fact that the afterlife even exists, is more interested in securing his earthbound legacy. In leading DD and his best friend (and "official" girlfriend) Jaki to the box of photographs deemed too dangerous to publish in his lifetime—photographs that, he believes, will prove so explosive as to potentially topple the Sri Lankan regime and permanently upend the country's violent status quo.
The bureaucratized afterlife is a long-established trope, going back to films like A Matter of Life and Death and Defending Your Life, and seen more recently in The Good Place. Karunatilaka's twist on it is that the afterlife, at least as dead Sri Lankans like Maali experience it, reflects the indifference and dysfunction of similar bureaucracies in the real world. The afterlife waiting room is chaotic and disorderly (even dead, Maali muses, Sri Lankans can't queue). The recently deceased, many of whom have died by violence, argue with the spirits processing them about the unfairness of their fate. The process of getting ready to enter The Light involves securing various forms from different departments, some of which turn out to be closed when Maali gets there. And through it all, there are voices suggesting that the whole thing is pointless, a runaround, a way of distracting the dead from what really matters.
Maali has two guides during his afterlife sojourn. Ranee, the spirit of a Tamil moderate gunned down by the Tigers, is the institutionalist urging him to follow the rules, complete the process, and enter The Light. His desire to secure his legacy and look after DD and Jaki (or, for that matter, discover his murderer) she dismisses as the vestiges of ego that must be discarded. Her opposite number is Sena, a JVP activist disappeared by the government, who argues that the system Ranee represents is merely another instrument of bourgeois control, and that forgetting one's life to rejoin the cycle of reincarnation only ensures that nothing will ever change. Better, he suggests, to stay on Earth and get revenge on the people who murdered them. If you found yourself underwhelmed by the conclusion of The Good Place, it can be gratifying to see Maali point out to Ranee that focusing on his own enlightenment does nothing to change a world where the rich and powerful continue to prey on the poor and powerless. But Sena's schemes are similarly unconvincing, arguing for retributive violence without any suggestion of how this will make things better.
Never much of a joiner, Maali refuses both offers and returns to Earth to try to get his photographs published. This allows Karunatilaka to construct an elaborate cosmology of the afterlife while giving readers a tour of late 20th century Colombo and its profound dysfunction. Like Patrick Swayze in Ghost, Maali learns that there are elaborate rules for how the dead can interact with the living world—they can ride winds like bus lines, or congregate in trees that act as transport hubs—and certain individuals who can teach him new tricks, such as whispering to the living.
Maali can travel anywhere his remains go, and anywhere his name is spoken. Which means that he follows the hapless goons tasked with disposing his corpse (along with those of other murder victims), and the police officers who receive his missing person's report and are desperately trying to work out which angle—accepting a bribe from Maali's mother, doing under the table work for one government minister, currying favor with another—gives them the most advantage and places them in the least danger. Along the way we're introduced to the various forces with whom Maali entangled himself during his life—a Tamil aid organization with barely-hidden Tiger ties; a British arms dealer masquerading as a journalist; the various military officers and government officials who have erected an almost industrialized system of criminalizing and disappearing those deemed enemies of the regime.
If, like me, you know virtually nothing about Sri Lanka and its recent history, you will most likely find the experience of reading The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida both bracing and instructive. Karunatilaka originally published the novel in India in 2020, under the title Chats With the Dead. The current version was reworked for international readers with more explanatory material. (Some of these segments are fairly easy to clock once you know they're there, such as a cheat sheet explaining the country's various factions that Maali allegedly wrote for the foreign journalists who employ him as a fixer.) Even with this handholding, it's easy to feel disoriented by the bombardment of information, almost all of it relating to atrocities—the slaughter of Tamil civilians under the guise of rooting out terrorists in 1983, the downing of a commercial airliner in 1986, the brutal crackdown against those suspected of JVP connections in the late 80s, and the existence of The Palace, a secret prison where those suspected of anti-government activities are held, tortured, and ultimately discarded.
Karunatilaka constructs a setting in which both the living and the dead are engaged in a seemingly endless cycle of sectarian violence. Everywhere he goes, Maali encounters the spirits of the murdered and disappeared, who linger in order to proclaim the injustice of their fate, or simply out of irresolvable grief and anger. Sena recruits from among these, promising them vengeance and using his growing powers to orchestrate violence in the world of the living. Other spirits have their own agenda—the country's corrupt, bloodstained minister of defense has been saved from multiple assassination attempts by the spirit of a dead bodyguard, who has protected generations of unworthy leaders long after his own death. And a constant threat to spirits who fail to enter The Light is the Mahakali, a monstrous creature who swallows up lost spirits, whose genesis is in a long-ago act of violence that continues to reverberate down the generations.
The tone with which these elements, historical and fantastical, are related is sardonic and mocking, drily revealing such details as the ghosts of Tamil child soldiers who enjoy the afterlife because there, nobody tells them what to do, and the spirits of tourists from the downed airliner who decided not to follow their bodies home because, after all, they'd paid for a vacation. That the novel is narrated wholly in the second person only intensifies the blackness of this humor—are we witnessing the depths of Maali's self-loathing, or his blanket contempt for anyone who, like him, impotently observes his country's outbursts of violence?
Maali himself can end up getting a bit lost in the shuffle of all this furious worldbuilding and historical explanation. He's a man who prides himself on not taking a side, taking jobs with every faction in the conflict, then photographing the things they didn't want him to document, then hiding those photographs in a box rather than trying to get them published in his lifetime. That unstable balance between taking risks and refusing to stick his neck out is reflected in Maali's life as a closeted gay man, in which he simultaneously flaunts his sexuality and furiously denies it, pursing a relationship with DD while cheating on him relentlessly, promising to leave with him to Japan, Europe, or San Francisco and then mocking his plans to do so. The result is a character who never quite seems to be fully there, and if there's a criticism to be made of the book it is that Maali's hardboiled cynicism, and his eventual coming to peace with his life's choices and failings, can both end up feeling a little perfunctory.
Still, that centerlessness may be deliberate. Some reviewers have drawn comparisons between Karunatilaka and Vonnegut or Bulgakov, and like those writers, he seems to use humor as a defense mechanism against profound pain. Eventually it becomes clear that the readers' disorientation is the point. That even Maali, despite living in Sri Lanka his whole life and for all his pretense of disaffection, is deeply traumatized by the relentless onslaught of violence he's witnessed and documented. His detachment and wry nihilism are a mask concealing despair, a conviction that it is impossible to pull out of this spiral of violence.
Against that, however, there is the genuinely pulse-pounding ending that Karunatilaka constructs for his characters, in which Maali's scheming ends up endangering the people he loves most, which forces him not only to risk his chance of entering The Light, but to take a long look at the things he's valued and realize how many of them don't actually matter. Maali's photographs do not, as in reality they never could, topple governments or end the civil war. But they do reveal him and the things that, despite his pretense of detachment, he truly cared about. It is in that posthumous exposure that he finally finds peace and the ability to move on. The resulting novel is a detective story, an elaborate fantasy, a work of historical fiction, and a post-life coming of age tale. Taken together, they make for a thrilling read.
The Birth Lottery is an excellent dessert course to Seven Moons's rich meal, not only because it deals with some of the same topics—one of the stories here, "Assassin's Paradise", is a kind of deleted scene from the novel, and several others, including the title piece, return to the ideas of the afterlife and reincarnation that have been more elaborately worked out in the longer work—but because it gives readers a more rounded impression of Karunatilaka's range as a writer. Several stories here demonstrate impressive formal innovation. "Easy Tiger" is a series of text exchanges between a philandering husband and his over-it wife that delivers several massive plot twists with tremendous verve. "No. One. Cares." is a transcript of Facebook interactions in the wake of one person's announcement of his intention to commit suicide that asks what social media "friendship" actually means. Others are simply tremendous exercises in different literary voices. "The Colonials" lets three foreigners, British, Dutch, and Portuguese, tell their stories of arriving in Sri Lanks and bending it to their own will, while the reader increasingly puzzles at the story's time period. "My Name is Not Malini" is a pitch-perfect piece of social realism about the lives of foreign nannies and maids in Saudi Arabia, with a horrific final twist.
Here, too, one finds Karunatilaka delving confidently into well-established genre tropes. "The Ceylon Islands" imagines fed-up Sri Lankan industrialists decamping from the island to an ersatz version of it, recreating it whole cloth but without the religion and political strife—which may not be as much of a paradise as advertised. "Time Machine. I Have Built A." sees a lifelong functionary of the regime taking advantage of confiscated Tamil technology to rectify past events that have led him down the path of political disillusionment and personal disappointment, only to realize that these are self-fulfilling prophecies, in what feels like a riff on "All You Zombies" that is nevertheless deeply grounded in its setting. And some stories simply have a powerful slipstreamy quality, such as "The Prison Riot", in which the titular event is narrated by the prison's most overlooked, frequently-abused inmate, whose identity makes for a delightful twist. It's a fantastic collection that shows off an author in complete control of his material, and reaffirms my impression that genre readers, in particular, owe it to themselves to become familiar with Karunatilaka's writing.

Pilot Training: Admission, Fees, Subjects & Other Details
Dreaming of soaring through the skies and commanding an aircraft? Becoming a pilot is not just a career; it's an adventure filled with excitement, challenges, and unparalleled experiences. With the aviation industry booming in India, aspiring pilots are presented with numerous opportunities to take flight. However, navigating the path to becoming a licensed pilot requires knowledge about training programs, admission processes, costs, and more. Whether you’re looking to earn your wings or simply curious about what it takes to enter this exhilarating field, you’ve landed in the right place. Let’s dive into everything you need to know about pilot training in India!
About Pilots
Pilots are the skilled professionals who operate aircraft, guiding them through takeoff, flight, and landing. They play a crucial role in ensuring passenger safety and comfort while navigating complex air traffic systems. The responsibilities of a pilot extend beyond merely flying the plane. They must conduct pre-flight checks, monitor instruments during flights, and communicate effectively with air traffic control. A keen attention to detail is essential for this demanding job. There are different types of pilots—commercial pilots fly passengers or cargo for airlines; private pilots operate smaller planes for personal use; then there are military pilots who serve in defense roles. Each category requires specific training and certifications. With advancements in technology, today’s pilots also rely on sophisticated navigation systems. Yet despite these tools, their comprehensive knowledge of aviation principles remains irreplaceable in safely guiding aircraft across vast skies.
Type of Pilot License
The journey to becoming a pilot begins with understanding the different types of pilot licenses available. Each license opens unique opportunities in aviation. The Private Pilot License (PPL) allows individuals to fly for personal use, without compensation. It’s ideal for those who want to enjoy flying as a hobby. For aspiring commercial pilots, the Commercial Pilot License (CPL) is essential. This license permits pilots to operate aircraft for compensation or hire and lays the groundwork for advanced training. Additionally, there are specialized licenses like the Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL), necessary for commanding large commercial aircraft. Each type has specific requirements regarding flight hours and examinations, guiding students through their career paths efficiently in this dynamic field. Understanding these options is vital when considering pilot training in India and helps future aviators carve out their desired niche in aviation.
Admission Process of Pilot in India
The admission process for pilot training in India is straightforward but requires careful attention. First, aspiring pilots must meet specific eligibility criteria. A minimum educational qualification of 10+2 in Physics and Mathematics is essential. Many institutes also require candidates to pass a medical examination conducted by the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Once you’ve cleared these initial requirements, the next step involves choosing a reputed flying school. Research various institutions offering pilot training in India to understand their curriculum, facilities, and placement records. Most schools conduct an entrance exam followed by an interview. Performing well in both can significantly enhance your chances of securing a seat. After selection, students typically need to complete documentation and pay the requisite fees before commencing their training program. This organized approach ensures that only serious candidates embark on this challenging yet rewarding journey into aviation.
Fee Structure of Pilot Training in India
The fee structure for pilot training in India varies widely based on the institute and course type. Generally, aspiring pilots can expect to invest anywhere from INR 30 lakhs to INR 50 lakhs. This cost typically covers ground training, flying hours, examination fees, and other essential resources. However, it's crucial to look beyond just the tuition fees. Your budget should also include hidden costs such as medical examinations and equipment. Many institutions offer flexible payment plans or scholarships that can ease financial burdens. Researching various options is key to finding a program that fits both your aspirations and budget. Always inquire about additional charges before enrolling. Understanding the complete financial commitment will prepare you better for this exciting journey toward becoming a pilot in India.
Duration of Pilot Training Course in India
The duration of pilot training courses in India varies based on the type of license and institution. Generally, a Commercial Pilot License (CPL) requires around 18 to 24 months of intensive study and flight training. During this time, students undergo ground school classes covering theoretical subjects like navigation, meteorology, and aircraft systems. Practical flying hours are crucial as well; aspiring pilots must log a minimum number of flying hours under the supervision of certified instructors. Additional time is necessary for advanced training for those pursuing an Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL). This course could extend up to two years or more as it demands comprehensive knowledge and extensive flight experience. Institutes often offer integrated programs that combine CPL with ATPL theory. This approach can streamline the process while providing a robust foundation for future aviators. Balancing practical skills with theoretical knowledge is essential throughout this journey.
What are the subjects in pilot course?
A pilot training course covers a diverse range of subjects essential for aspiring aviators. The curriculum typically begins with foundational topics like aerodynamics and aircraft systems, which provide insight into how planes operate. Navigation is another crucial subject. Pilots learn to read charts, understand GPS technology, and use various navigation aids. This knowledge is vital for safe flight planning and execution. Meteorology plays a significant role as well. Understanding weather patterns helps pilots make informed decisions about flying conditions, ensuring passenger safety. Human factors in aviation are also addressed. This includes studying the psychological aspects affecting pilot performance during flights. Regulatory frameworks governing aviation operations round out the educational spectrum. Familiarity with laws ensures compliance and enhances overall operational safety in the skies. Together, these subjects equip students with comprehensive skills necessary for their future careers as professional pilots.
What is the average salary of a pilot in India?
The average salary of a pilot in India varies widely based on experience and the type of aircraft they fly. Entry-level commercial pilots can expect to earn around ₹8-12 lakhs per annum, while seasoned professionals often make significantly more. With years in the cockpit, experienced pilots working for major airlines can command salaries ranging from ₹20-50 lakhs annually. Additionally, those flying international routes or larger aircraft typically have higher compensation packages. Factors like airline reputation, flight hours logged, and specialization also play crucial roles in determining earnings. Apart from base salary, many pilots enjoy additional perks such as allowances for travel and accommodation. This can elevate their overall income substantially. Career growth opportunities within aviation add further financial incentives over time.
How to choose best pilot training institute in India?
Choosing the right pilot training in India is crucial for your aviation career. Start by researching the institute’s accreditation and affiliations. Ensure they meet regulatory standards set by authorities like the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Look into the faculty's qualifications and experience. Qualified instructors can significantly impact your learning curve. Visit facilities when possible. A well-equipped simulator and training aircraft indicate a commitment to quality education. Check student reviews and success rates. Insights from alumni can provide valuable perspectives on their experiences. Consider course offerings as well. Some institutes might focus more on commercial pilot licenses, while others may offer specialized programs. Assess placement assistance provided after completion of training. Strong industry connections can ease your transition into a piloting career in India or abroad.

Cricket: A Cultural Bond for International Students in the UK
Stating that cricket is just a game of course is the most massive understatement because it is one of the most popular events in today’s society. Most of the students of the group are international students, so cricket is something that they can relate to their home country such as India, Pakistan, Australia, or the West Indies. It is an interest that love has no control over and that has an equal following between those of the establishment and the fence-sitters. Watching matches gives people a feeling of confidence while getting acquainted on the premises of student housing, or becoming friends in student apartments since students are often international. Cricket is not just fun for international students; it also delivers strategy, skill, team teamwork and hence a way of developing friendships and belongingness which so much may be required in the new environment they are in.
Village Greens to Global Arenas: The Journey of Cricket
Cricket was started in England in the 16th Century particularly in southeastern states as a children’s pastime but after transforming into adults’ favourite game across all classes. In the 17th century, it was already an organized game, throughout which the rules were set, and the first documented game was played at the turn of 1646 in Sussex. The development of the ‘Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC)’ in 1787 acted to provide codification to the activity thereby cementing its place as the sport.
Colonization of England’s cricket means that when England colonized the world it took cricket with it and different countries adopted this new game creating their own styles. But for South Asians, cricket gives them an idea about the history of Britain and a glimpse of its social stratification and imperialism of the British over the non-European regions of the world. Typically many universities have cricket societies so that people can feel that they are in touch with their community and its traditions.
The rise of cricket as a sports game from basically a local interest to an international sport is able to be compared to how international students transform from being the initial angry fish out of the water to constructing cultural bridges.
England: Where Cricket Meets Legacy and Opportunity
England is the ultimate destination for cricket lovers, providing international students with much more than just a game. With its rich cricket history and legendary venues like Lord’s—the “Home of Cricket”—it’s a place where passion intertwines with tradition. Picture yourself in a stadium, the crowd cheering, and the atmosphere buzzing with excitement. That’s the essence of cricket culture in England.
Universities go beyond lectures; they feature cricket societies, tournaments, and team events that bring together players who share your enthusiasm. Whether you’re devising strategies on the field or celebrating a win, you’ll find your community here. The busy cricket calendar—The Hundred, County Championships—means there’s always something happening and valuable lessons to be learned.
Cricket transcends boundaries, providing opportunities to network with professionals and fellow students. For international students, it’s not merely a hobby; it’s a challenge to embrace, a means to adapt, and a pathway to success.
Student Tenant: A Partner in Your Cricket Journey
Student Tenant goes beyond simply providing student accommodation or rooms; it’s about helping international students flourish in the UK. By carefully choosing properties near universities with vibrant cricket cultures, they make sure you’re always close to the excitement—whether it’s campus sports facilities or famous local cricket grounds.
Their accommodations serve as more than just places to live; they are centres of community. With shared spaces perfect for watching matches, connecting with fellow cricket fans, and celebrating your love for the sport, they create a genuine home away from home. Student Tenant recognizes that cricket is not just a game; it’s a significant part of your identity. By offering flexible housing options that cater to your sporting interests, cultural background, and desire for social engagement, they set you up for success. With Student Tenant, you’re not merely securing a room—you’re discovering your place within the heart of Britain’s cricket community.
