Black Friday
Despite its declared war on “satanic” western values, Putinist Russia continues to slavishly imitate all the worst the mythical west has to offer, including “Black Friday,” as exemplified by this image from an email flyer sent to me earlier today by the major online retailer Ozon, featuring the pop singer Dmitry Malikov. Nor has Putin’s “proxy war” with the west stopped the pidginization of the…

Really well written as always.
Hope there's more.

For anyone else reading this link to the story on archive of our own here
And chapter 2 is here
"Vanya," Felix grumbled, "stop following me and do your tasks."
"I am. I guess they're in the same direction."
"Uh huh." Felix looked over at Ivan's phone and narowed his eyes. "Why is your name red?"
"Oh Lixa," Ivan said sweetly, "you don't have your glasses on. You must have seen it wrong. Ivan twisted around and turned the screen away. Felix scowled.
"I found my contacts liar." Felix looked back down at his phone and his mouth dropped open as he watched Ivan kill him. it dropped lower when he watched Ivan report it.
"You see who did it?" Piotr asked.
"No. I just saw the long tongue thing impale him."
"That is not-"
"Shh." Ivan pressed a finger to his lips and Felix blinked and stared down at him. "You're a ghost so you can't talk."
"That wasn't a rule when you died last round."
"Scream into the void," Aslan said. He looked at Felix's phone. "Was that you who died?"
"Yes. You should know this. It shows our names on screen. Anyway, Ivan is not being fair."
"Quite pouting," Piotr chastised. "So the rules changed. It's not that big a deal."
"You don't think it's suspicious he made that rule after I died and he's the one who reported it?"
"No. Why?"
Felix blinked. "Of course not," he grumbled.
"Someone just killed me!" Anatoly yelled. It seemed only Felix noticed the faint smirk on Ivan's lips.
"Now you can't talk Tolya," Piotr said and he smirked. Anatoly scowled.
"I say we need to do an emergency meeting," Vladimir said.
The meeting did not come to a final conclusion and Vladimir found himself gawping at his phone. His character was lying there, beheaded.
He opened his mouth to say something but Piotr shushed him. "No talking Blondie."
Aslan and Sergei shared a look. They looked at Dmitri. Sergei called another meeting.
While the meeting was going on Anatoly, Felix, and Vladimir rages in the hat about the unfairness of it all. All three came to the conclusion Piotr was very much "sus" as the kids would put it. Very much sus indeed.
"Hey!" Ivan cried as he watched his character being thrown out of the spaceship.
"I knew it!" Felix shouted.
"Shut up Ghost," Sergei said. "And sit back down. You almost knocked the food and my drink on the floor.
"Of course you say your drink. What about other people's drinks?"
"I mentioned the others food didn't I-"
"Maybe we should be more concerned about the stitches he almost pulled out," Piotr said and he sniffed. "Again. For the third time actually."
"I'm sorry-"
"You all are very competitive about this aren't you," Matt said.
"These people are cheating," Vladimir whined, though he later profusely denied it. "Make them stop."
"I don't know. Foggy, should I?"
"Nah. It's pretty entertaining."
"I'll say," Karen said, and she lifted her drink in their direction.
"What the hell! Who killed me!?" Dmitri whipped his head around and scowled at the remaining players.
Piotr stared back nonchalantly. He pointed at Aslan.
"Rude," Dmitri growled at Aslan. "I thought we were supposed to be teammate's!"
"We are! I didn't kill you!"
"That's exactly what you'd say if you did kill me!"
"I didn't!"
"I don't know," Piotr drawled. "Seems pretty sus to me."
Ivan let out a drawn out breath. "Please don't say sus. You're too old."
"Sus sus sus sus sus," Sergei chanted and Aslan cuffed him on the head.
"Knock that off. You're the reason we're banned from using internet words."
"That's another reason," Felix said. "You say stuff like that."
"Guys!" Dmitri shouted. "Would you stop fighting already! Piotr has killed you both already!"
Sergei and Aslan looked down at phones heads and stared in horror at the glowing red 'defeated'.
Piotr and Ivan both cheered loudly. "Again!" Ivan shouted and he was immediately shot down.
"I've had enough," Vladimir said. "You both always gang up on everyone. Even if you aren't imposter you team up with them and end up voting them off."
"Well you better find yourself a team mate then spoil sport," Piotr said. He patted Vladimir on the shoulder. "You're losing your game Voldoya."
"I'll show you losing your game," Vlaidmri growled and he lunged at him.
"Hey! Enough of that! Not in the house!"
Vladimir sat back down almost sheepishly. "Sorry Motya."
"You've really mellowed him," Piotr told Matt and Vladimir stood up again.
"I'll show you mellowed-"
"How about we call it a night," Foggy said. "I think we've had enough of all-" he waved a hand "-this."
"Foggy," Karen said as she stood, "is right. Good night everyone." She waved goodbye as she left and a chorus of goodbyes followed her as she shut the door.
"Goodnight everyone," Foggy said, and he too left.
Piotr insisted he check Felix's stitches again and Felix let him with a sigh.
"You all staying or going?" Matt asked.
"Leaving," Aslan, Dmitri, and Sergei all said. They left and said they'd be waiting for Piotr by the car.
"You," Piotr pointed a finger at Felix, "don't leave yet. Wait until Matt or Claire or I says it's fine."
"Fine dad," Felix said with a roll of his eyes.
"Vanya. Same goes for you."
"But-" Ivan whined.
"No but's. Tolya is going to stay here-"
"Uhh, since when?" Matt asked.
"Why do I have to play babysitter," Anatoly huffed.
"Because I said so and because the rest of you are hopeless at being responsible. Goodnight." He spun on his heels and left before any protests could be made.
Matt sighed in exasperation. "Let's go, I guess." Vladimir stood and followed him into his room.
Somehow Ivan ended up curled around Felix on one of two couches. Felix was horrified to realize the kid was now at least as tall as him.

his girlfriend Stefania Malikova(she and Kirill are now resting in the Altai Territory) , daughter of the famous Russian musician Dmitry Malikov. She is a "singer". Her father buys all the music awards for her. Without rich parents, she is nothing. I can compare her with Lily-Rose Depp.

Wow
I hope he has enough brains to stay in the NHL (although I personally do not care, but it will be a shame if he devotes his best years to a mediocre girl or to Roman Rotenberg)

It was four in the morning, the air was cool and it smelled like rain. Nadia’s eyes were staring out the window in the kitchen, the one over the sink as she held her cup of coffee between her hands. It was unusual for her to be up two hours before she was supposed to but the excitement of everything they had been planning was finally coming to light.
Suddenly arms were around her, her guard had been completely down and she wasn’t ready for someone to actually be awake expect for the men who kept on guard throughout the night to be filling in the morning shift guards. Her eyes glanced down at the arms and she noticed them almost instantly.
Niko Baskin.
It was one of their men. Yes, their men. Since Dmitri was a little out of control, she was the one Roman brought in to take over the position of second in command since her father and her grandfather had been the second in commands to the Malikov Headbosses through the decades. She exhaled, leaning her head back against his shoulder as she tilted her head up towards him.
“You know better than to sneak up on me, Niko.” Her voice was soft as she moved one of her hands from her cup of coffee and up towards the back of his neck as her eyes moved back out towards the window. Of course, her and Niko were a secret because she didn’t need Roman thinking she had any weaknesses.. Plus her late night meetings with Roman always had a little extra something in the middle of them.
Sleep wasn’t something that had ever come easily for Niko Baskin, it also became more difficult knowing the things he did and not being able to do a thing about it. His little sister Anastasia a few months ago met Roman Malikov at one of the family functions and has been paying late night visits to his room ever since. He also liked to be up before everyone else to make sure everything was in the right places but he found himself traveling to the kitchen because he heard a sound. Now he was with his arms wrapped around Nadia as if she was all his. He leaned his head down a little, moving his cheek against hers, exhaling a breath. “Were you with him?”
Nadia put her cup of coffee down onto the counter right next to the sink before turning herself around to face him, her hand moving from the back of his neck to the side of his face as she let her thumb brush against his cheekbone. Her eyes flickering up towards his face. She should have felt guilty but at least he knew about what was going on between her and Roman. Although, it wasn’t anywhere close to being what she had with him. “Why? She didn’t know why the question even came up, neither one of them ever talked about their feelings because they both knew in this house.. Weakness was not acceptable. “Are you jealous?”
Niko closed the little distance between their bodies, pinning her up against the counter as he brought his face a little closer to hers, the two of them so close they were breathing the same air. It wasn’t the reason for his question at least he didn’t think it was. Commitment was something he never put in the cards for himself due to the life he left. He was the man who was sent out to handle the dirty work and at any given time it was possible he wouldn’t come back from one of those trips. He moved his hand to the back of her neck as he let the tip of his nose brush against hers. “Do I have a reason to be?” His voice was so soft that it sent a shiver down her spine.
Her head slightly tilted up to brush her nose against his. Their lips were so close, it made her heart pound a little harder. God, it felt completely stupid how wrapped up in him she actually was. Her eyes were open and resting on his eyes as she moved her other hand up towards the back of his neck, letting her fingers thread through the strands of his hair. “You know there isn’t..” She whispered barely loud enough for him to hear as she let her lips start to move towards him until there was a noise outside the kitchen, the two of them breaking apart as she glanced towards the direction of the archway.
Adrian stood there, staring at the two of them but without saying a word he moved across the kitchen and out the back door, shutting it behind him.
Nadia let out a breath she didn’t even realize she was holding. She knew the younger Malikov child wasn’t typically the kid who went around and spread gossip but she also knew he probably knew a lot more than people realized. She lifted her eyes towards Niko who hadn’t seemed to move his eyes from hers. “Niko.” She tried to warn him, seeing the look in his eyes because she was feeling the same urge as him.
Instead of listening to her like he should have, his hand moved to the back of her head again, bringing her face in closer to his, closing the distance between their lips. Her lips moved back against his as the two of them moved closer to each other, their bodies touching. He pulled back after what felt like a minute, moving his fingers out of the strands of her black hair, dropping his hand to his side. “I should go.” He simply stated, giving her one last look before he walked out of the kitchen.
Her eyes rested on the now empty space in front of her as she tilted her head down to look at her bare feet. Her hand reached back to grab her coffee cup, bringing the cup up towards her lips to drink the rest of what was left in it. She turned back around and rinsed out her cup, putting it in the sink, knowing the workers would be starting the dishwasher after breakfast anyway. She moved away from the sink and out of the kitchen.
Nadia sat in her chair, her eyes resting on her laptop which was on the Chicago News page. The two of them had decided it was time to show the families how easily they could get to them. The first they did was go to Lucia Winters’ apartment and surprise pick her up to show the Italian’s how stupid they were being when it came to thinking no one else could touch them and as for teaching the Irish the same lesson they sent a couple of males to the mechanic shop they owned and picked up one of their men - Aidan Walsh who happened to be a son like figure to Bryan O’Shea and the boyfriend of the Irish princess, Ashlyn O’Shea. Now the two of them were in locked rooms somewhere in the cabin.
An exhale left her lips as she shut the laptop closed. Apparently they were the type to keep things hush hush which honestly surprised Nadia. Her hands ran over her face as she moved her fingers towards her temples. The only downfall for being up so early was the fact with the lack of sleep she had gotten a headache forming right behind her eyeballs.
There was a knock on the door, a dissatisfied grunt left her lips as one of her eyes peeked open. “Come in,” she dropped her hand from her temple, tilting her head a little to face the person who walked inside of her office. It was Cooper Wilson who came walking in. One of their soldiers and the one who was talking to the guard at the prison where the Walsh boy’s father was currently serving out his years for a crime he didn’t commit - a crime the old O’Shea head boss had done. The plan was to get one of the guards to turn the cheek during a riot and let one of their inside men get to the Walsh gentleman.
“Tell me you have good news.” Nadia lifted her gaze up towards him, the male was good looking. He was always in a leather jacket, a little stubble and short brown hair. He was quiet. He kept to himself and it was hard to read him but he was always the one willing to do just about anything with no questions asked.
“Yes. I got in contact with Vikor.. He’s got the camera and the riot can be stage for as soon as today.” His hands were in the pocket of his leather jacket as his eyes didn’t move from the woman behind the desk. Vikor was one of his long time connections and he had been more than willing to use the favor the other male owed to him for anything the Malikov family would need since they were the ones who helped him get off the streets and into a nice little apartment which he would have to get rid of the second the family was ready to up and move to Chicago.
“Okay.. When you can find Victoria. Send her to me so we can get the live feed on the tablet.” Her elbows moved onto the surface of the desk as she let her hands tucked underneath her chin as he gave her a simple nod and moved out of the office. Another exhale left her lips as soon as the door closed as she moved her hand towards the top drawer on the right side of her desk, pulling it out and reaching inside to take out the ibuprofen bottle. She popped the cap and put four of the little pills in the palm of her hand. She brought her hand to her mouth, putting the pills in her mouth as she used the same hand towards the glass of water, bringing it to her lips and taking a long sip of it. Her eyes closing as she swallowed the pills down.

Lev was very good at a few select things in life, and following orders was one of them. The Malikovs and his own family line went way back, his father died in service to Roman’s father, and Lev had been lucky that he and his mother had been spared. But it left his life irrevocably linked to Roman and his family, so when the time came, Lev was just as loyal as his father had been. He was someone who was in the inner circle, as trusted as he was deadly, but Lev had the ability to blend in with society in a way that Roman and his brothers hadn’t quiet mastered. That combined skill set had led to his new assignment these last few months--glorified babysitting of Roman’s pregnant mistress.
Pretty much everywhere Ana went, Lev took her. He never complained about being off the front lines, out of the action with Roman, Mischa, and Dmitri. All of this was for the next generation, wasn’t it? Even if Roman’s boys weren’t too thrilled with the idea of a new sibling, he knew the entire household would rally to protect their newest and most vulnerable member. It was a job Lev took seriously, and while at first he had found Ana’s personality more of an annoyance, she began to grow on him. He hadn’t expected the friendship that blossomed between them, but he was glad for it even if it made his job both easier and harder.
Easier, because she trusted him and was honest with him. Harder, because she was the only woman he’d ever felt this kind of bond with before in his life.
“You’re going to be late!” he called out so she could hear him from where she was finishing getting ready in the bathroom attached to the master bedroom she’d been given in the estate. Lev was flopped back on the bed, his shoes hanging off the side since he was already dressed to leave and take her on all her errands and appointments for the day.

Sluagh by JadeThorne
I met Dmitry through DeviantArt.
I know, I know, how cliché. But I love nature photography, clouds and weather included, and so I had a gallery full of photos. I also had a few short stories about fallen angels and daemons.
It was the short stories that caught his attention.
Dmitry was a Satanist. Well, more specifically a Luciferian. There’s a difference – I’ll let you guys look it up. It was tough enough just typing that out.
We started talking through their PM system first, before progressing to phone calls, and then him actually visiting. He lived in Virginia, so it wasn’t impossible for him to come down to see me. After, oh, I don’t know, three or four months of dating like this he announced he wanted to make it official and so I was presented with an engagement ring.
Within the year, he transferred jobs and we moved in together.
I thought the world of him. He was charming, compassionate, romantic …. Or, at least at first he was. No, Dmitry Malikov was soon to show me who he really was.
One thing I need to put out here, even though I really don’t want to because not everyone who reads here is a nice person, is that I met Dmitry after I was medically discharged from the Army. With full-blown PTSD. Newly-healed from a broken back, cracked ribs, busted up knee and ankle, and dislocated jaw. They didn’t offer to try to cover up the scarring on my face. So no, I am not a particularly attractive woman. And it confused me why this man, this gorgeous Russian who had a professional career and could have dated models, wanted me. A nobody.
Dmitry showed me the world through new eyes, though. Eyes that didn’t have the stigma of mental illness attached. Eyes that weren’t afraid of the outside world, of people.
I trusted him.
He and I did a lot of hiking together. We loved exploring new places. I just loved being in the woods, the peace that it brought me. The woods have always felt like home to me. Anyhow, we were hiking down this trail, and a group of cross-country runners came up on us from nowhere. I hadn’t heard them – maybe I had zoned out listening to the whisper of wind through the trees, or smelling the scent of the forest around us.
They triggered me. I had, to my utter humiliation, a full-blown attack right there on that trail. It took me right back to that night, in the Army … when those bad things had happened to me.
Dmitry left me there. He walked off back to the car, got in it, and left. He left me curled up on myself in the middle of the hiking path, choking on tears and blinded by those memories.
Well, a group of hikers inevitably found me and called the ranger out. By the time the ranger got there, I was begging them not to kill me, not to hurt me, to just send me back stateside. The ranger – Jake, I learned was his name later when he befriended me – thankfully had friends who were combat vets, and knew the signs. He was able to get me back in the here and now, and even gave me a ride home.
When I walked in the door, Dmitry just looked up at me with … surely that wasn’t disgust on his face, was it? He knew I had PTSD, even knew what the hell it was from. Like I said, I trusted him.
“Try not to embarrass me like that again,” he said. “I won’t be as nice the next time.”
Floored, I just stood there. Embarrass him? I had an episode that was out of my control, and he saw it as my deliberately embarrassing him? The thread of unease began working its way up my spine.
While he was at work, I started hiking alone. Id’ go during the week, in the early afternoons when not many people were out. I learned those trails like the back of my hand, and even found a few that I was sure no one ever used. It was on one of those remote trails that I found what I would call “my rock”. This huge, huge boulder, perched precariously on the side of a hill. I would frequently climb on top of it and sit and think or just enjoy the woods around me.
It was on those long, lone hikes that I became friends with Jake. He saw me out on his patrols, and started stopping to talk to me. Jake kept an eye on me, you might say. When he would ask how I felt, I would tell him that the woods felt like home, and I was safe there. It was the truth, but the full magnitude of my words wouldn’t be known until much later.
Dmitry had always enjoyed a vodka on the rocks now and then, but his drinking was starting to become a problem. On the weekends in particular; he would start drinking at around noon, and by the time night rolled around he was fairly well hammered.
He was not a nice drunk.
It started with insults.
As I said, I was not a terribly attractive woman. I had bad facial scarring, and on top of that yes I had gained quite a bit of weight. I was working to get it off, but once you hit a certain age, it’s a hell of a lot harder.
“You deserved what they did to you, fucking fat cunt,” Dmitry would mutter when I was nearby.
Yes, I should have left him then, but … he scared me some. When he’d fix those ice blue eyes on me and furrow those black eyebrows, I’d freeze up like a bunny caught in the headlights of someone’s car. He was so much bigger and stronger than I was, I didn’t dare fight back.
From insults, it got worse. A slap here, a shove there … until one night he lost his goddamned mind over something completely idiotic.
Dmitry had been having me trailed on the days he worked – why I don’t know and could not tell you. I didn’t know I was being followed though, or I might have thought twice about my nice long chats with Jake. But still, Jake was only a friend. He had never even put a hand on me. We both stood or sat at least three feet apart when we talked. That didn’t matter to Dmitry though.
“Who are you fucking behind my back?” Dmitry growled, late one Saturday night.
I looked at him like he’d lost his mind. “What are you talking about? You know better than that, Dmitry.”
Quite suddenly I found myself pinned against the wall by my throat with those pale blue eyes narrowed to slits. “Who is he, god damn you?” he demanded. “Tell me who the fuck you’re meeting at the hiking trail! Tell me who you’re fucking, you lying whore!”
The shock on my face at hearing those words must have been an admission of guilt to him. He held me up by the throat for one long instant, and then he threw me down on the floor as hard as he could.
I could feel my old injuries flaring up when I hit the floor, but I didn’t have time to move. He was on me before I could so much as roll onto my side.
The beating I endured at his hands was worse than what I’d endured at Camp Babylon. And because we were living in a house, there were no neighbors to hear my screams. When I thought I couldn’t take any more, merciful darkness closed over me.
I regained consciousness to a dark house. I was still on the living room floor, but I couldn’t hear Dmitry anywhere. Assessing my injuries, I found one eye swelled shut, my nose broken, at least one rib fracture or possibly broken, and several teeth loose. I had blood caked on my face, staining my shirt.
Carefully, I sat up. I gave myself a little time to adjust to being upright, and then I just as carefully got to my feet. My ribs ached like a son of a bitch – he’d really focused on them apparently. I guess he hoped to puncture my lungs.
It was then that I saw the two empty bottles of vodka, and heard his snores from down the hallway.
A new emotion rose up in me.
Rage.
I stood there staring down that hallway, listening to him snore and letting that rage build until it was white-hot. This was going to be the last night he ever laid one fucking hand on me, even if it meant my own death. I knew what I had to do. I just hoped I could pull it off in my current state.
Quietly I left the house, not bothering to lock up behind me. I didn’t dare take my car, knowing the noise would rouse him from his drunken stupor, so I pulled my cell out of my pocket. Jake had given me his number, just in case I needed help. Well, I needed help now. Ignorant of the time of night, I put the call through. When he answered on the fifth ring, sounding groggy, I ignored that too. “I need you to come pick me up and take me somewhere safe,” I stated simply, my voice deadly calm. When he agreed, I gave the address in almost a monotone and sat at the end of the driveway to wait.
A red Jeep pulled up around twenty minutes later, and the first look he had of me he freaked out. “Jesus Christ girl, what the hell did he do to you?” he demanded, helping me into the passenger side. “You need a hospital!”
“No,” I said, my expression shuttered. “Take me to the hiking trail, Jake.”
He just looked at me for one long moment. “The hiking trail,” he echoed.
“I’ll be safe there, Jake. I’ll call you when it’s over,” I told him.
He drove me there in silence, occasionally looking over at me like he wished he could change my mind. See, Jake had gotten close enough to me that I told him what my religious preference was – I’m sure he knew what I was about to do wasn’t going to be good, and it might even kill me.
When he unlocked the gate and pulled into the lot, I took a deep breath. “Thank you,” I said, looking over at him. “Go home, get some rest, Jake. I will call you when it’s over.”
That said, I got out of his Jeep and headed down the moonlit trail alone.
I walked to my rock, and climbed up. Pain lanced through me, but I used it to fuel the rage. When I was standing in the center, I took another deep, cleansing breath. Truth be told, I’d never done what I was about to do before in my life. But I had to try. I had to fucking try. My life depended on it.
Going with what my gut told me I needed to do, I twisted my already broken nose to start the blood flow again and began the ritual.
Ten minutes later saw me standing on the rock, blood everywhere, and waiting silently. If I was successful, they would come. If they accepted my offer, I would live. If they didn’t, well ….
The wind began to pick up. The gentle breeze that had blown on and off now became a brisk wind through the trees. Then it blew harder, until the trees were swaying fiercely.
The moon disappeared, casting the entirety of the woods in darkness with the wind howling about.
Still I stood in silence, not daring to move or speak.
The noise started out so faint, I wasn’t sure I heard it. A keening, crying, mixed with growls and the sound of something extremely large crashing through the trees. As it grew in intensity, I felt my hair stand on end. And when it reached my rock in its full glory, I almost passed out from the sight.
“Why have you called us, mortal?” it demanded. The voice was distorted, sounding like many things spoke at once that were human and not.
“Dmitry Malikov,” I answered, knowing better than to say anything else. Just the name, for vengeance. To right the wrongs done me.
A cacophony broke out that sounded like screaming and laughter mixed. “Oh, it’s smart, this mortal is,” it cried gleefully. “For that, you will ride with us, mortal!”
Something large grabbed me from off the rock, and I was pulled into a maelstrom of abominations. I found myself put down astride something, and out of habit looked down. I wish I hadn’t, instantly.
The creature I rode … looked like someone had taken a horse, ripped its hide off and replaced it in spots with snakeskin. The spots that didn’t have scales was rotting. The head had horns and immense curved tusks, and the eyes were a milky, putrid green.
I quit looking then, sure I didn’t want to see any more.
To my house we went, to where Dmitry still slept. When the sluagh reached the door, it laughed once more. “Call him, mortal,” it ordered.
“Dmitry!” I screamed. “Dmitry!”
“Where is your rage now, mortal?” the sluagh asked pointedly, baiting me.
“Dmitry, you motherfucker!” I screamed, rage bleeding through my voice and into the heart of the sluagh to feed it. “You cocksucking piece of shit, get your miserable fucking ass out here god damn you!”
When he ran out the front door … when he saw what was waiting for him, it was already too late.
I sat astride my mount for the moment, watching in silence as the sluagh destroyed him. His skin was flayed from his body while he stood there screaming. His fingernails were pulled out, along with his teeth, despite his hoarse pleas for it to stop. Unrecognizable sharp objects were shoved into him, to bleed him … to feed the sluagh his fear.
And then it consumed him whole.
I found myself on my rock the next morning. Sitting up, I looked around the woods for a moment, looking for any indication I hadn’t simply passed out and dreamed it all. Then I realized the blood was gone, and my injuries were healed. I had called the sluagh, ridden with them, and survived.
Smiling, I got down from the rock and walked up the hiking trail to the visitor’s center, where I knew I’d find Jake.
When he saw me, his eyes widened. “Oh my lord,” he murmured. “You did it.”
I nodded. “He’s taken care of, Jake. It’s safe for me to go back to the house now.”
“You’re sure?” he asked.
“I was there,” I said simply, telling him without telling him that I had ridden with the Sluagh.
He took a deep breath and exhaled very, very slowly, without taking his eyes off me. “God have mercy on the next poor sod who thinks he’s going to mistreat you.”
“For I will have none,” I added.
