A Bodily Autonomy Decorative Sunday

These gorgeous posters are a selection of work from Our Bodies Our Resistance, published by the Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative in 2023 in an edition of 150. The collection was curated by Molly Fair, a multidisciplinary artist, member of Justseeds, and a librarian (huzzah!). The thirteen risograph prints, cover sheet, and colophon were printed at Cowboy Press in Richmond, VA. They come wrapped in green hanky, screen-printed by Mary Tremonte at Lavender Estero in Pittsburg, PA. The green bandana is a symbol of the Marea Verde (“Green Wave” or “Green Tide”) an abortion rights movement that began in Argentina in the early 2000s and has since swept across Latin America. The design for the hanky was “cut from one piece of paper” by artist Devon Cohen, and “uplifts grizzly bears and three plants -- tansy, rue, and pennyroyal -- that have documented use over the centuries as abortifacients” (from the colophon).

60% of the proceeds of this portfolio will be donated to the National Network of Abortion Funds’ Collective Power Fund. This fund redistributes “direct abortion funding to 28 member abortion funds across more than 20 states. Funding is concentrated in the South and Midwest, where it’s often hardest to get an abortion. The Collective Power Fund supports the cost of an abortion, transportation to a clinic, childcare. lodging, and abortion doula support.”

Already our Defender 90 had been through a lot. A full service career with the Italian Carabinieri, re-imported to the United Kingdom, exported to British Columba Canada and then a major engine over haul and upgrade. This little Defender 

Our intention was always to be respectful to the brand, to the heritage and to the vehicle by not doing too much in the way of cutting, chopping and going over the top.

Part of our self brief was to do work on our vehicle that was:

Be respectful to the original vehicle.

Preserve what we had.

Cut & drill as little as possible.

Not create a vehicle that was far from original specifications.

Adapt it for our needs.

Help preserve the longevity and retain value.

What we wanted was a vehicle that had the following characteristics:

Simple.

Reliable.

Functional.

Has forms of protection.

Awesome tires.

Good suspension.

Good storage.

Practical.

Capable of long overland journeys.

Highly capable off road.

Made us smile every time we drive it.

What we have ended up with is a long list of very cool but well thought out additions or upgrades that enhance the vehicle in terms of practicality, form and function but retains it's original looks.

The very last thing we wanted was a huge lift, massive tires, great strain and stress on an older vehicle.

The true reality is that an old Defender 90 is an exceptionally capable vehicle stock and straight from the factory. There is something about driving a vehicle using pure technique with amazing old mechanical technology and not relying on electronic traction aids (not that there is anything wrong with them..)
