Kris' motivation behind being the roaring knight and the involvement of the player
I know, it is not completely confirmed if Kris is indeed the roaring knight or if they just listened to what Queen said and tried it themself, but I want to talk about the possibility of what it would mean if Kris truly is the roaring knight, specifically their motivations behind it and how they impacted the story.
So what does point to Kris being the roaring knight in the first place?
Aside from the end of the last chapter where they indeed opened a dark fountain there have been enough means and chances to do so for chapter 1 and 2 as well, seeing as Kris is able to do as they please without the players interference when they get rid of the soul for a bit. This way we can't observe what they are doing at all, giving them ample time to create dark fountains.
Now with that out of the way...why should Kris want to do that?
I have heard of theories that go from escapism to resetting to time loops and such, but what if it is far more personal than this?
Let's talk about Asriel for example. He is away to college, that is what the whole town tells Kris and us. And he is supposed to be back soon. He shared a room with Kris and won prices, his side is positively spotless.
How come?
Does Toriel clean the room all the time? Why didn't Asriel take most of his stuff with him?
It didn't seem like he was visiting regularly.
Of course that alone doesn't have to mean anything, but the way the townspeople continue to talk about Asriel, it almost sounds as if they want to shove it down Kris and our throat that Asriel is away at college and coming back soon, reminiscing about the past.
So...what if Asriel is not away at college at all... What if he is dead, or in a coma?
We all know that something has happened with Noelle's sister December, aka Dess, we also know that Asgore had to step down as chief of the police and that something happened to cause him and Toriel to divorce.
So what if all of that is connected?
Even if nothing whatsoever happened to Asriel and he really is away at college the rest of that theory would still work out, so please bear with me.
Alright, so if something happened to Asriel, why would the town go out of their way to tell us and Kris otherwise?
Because whatever happened traumatized Kris. They literally can't remember what happened, maybe they even hallucinate that Asriel is talking to them, so to help them heal Toriel has everyone pretend that Asriel is still with them. After a while she of course wants to gently get Kris away from the delusion they spun to protect themself, so she sends Asriel to college.
So why is everyone saying he is coming back now?
Perhaps she thinks it's time to tell Kris the truth, or she realized that they're not doing better at all without their Asriel around, maybe, if Asriel was in a coma, he is showing signs of waking up from it.
Similarly, even without the Asriel aspect, the events of whatever happened back then that caused his family to split up and Dess to not be with them anymore, could have a similar effect of trauma on Kris that they repressed to protect themself.
In that scenario Asriel might have gone to college to escape that event haunting him as well.
Now with all that in mind, why would Kris want to create dark fountains if not to escape reality?
For that we need to establish what the dark world spaces are. We have seen three as of now. Two of them seemed to have a theme and correspondence to certain people.
Lancer's world being connected to Susie, while Queen's world very much linked to Noelle. So wouldn't it make sense for the first world we see, Ralsei's, to be connected to someone as well?
That is Kris' link.
The dark world is like a mirror verse of sorts, it screens your soul and lures out all that is in it, the good and bad, absolutely everything, every emotional struggle and turmoil.
So the person that enters them adds to the world being shaped.
Why would Kris want that?
Because they want to remember what happened to split their family apart like this?
What caused their dad to step down as chief, why their parents split up and why Asriel is not with them.
So obviously they try their own dark world first, but Ralsei alone doesn't give them enough clues, so they create another one, right next to the original one in school to get to the bottom of this.
Why get Susie then?
That wasn't the plan at all. Kris wanted Noelle to come with them. They didn't plan for Susie to show up to class, cause most of the time she skips anyways. And this way their plan begins to backfire. Not only are they not able to get Noelle to partner with them and maybe get her to the closet, Susie eats the chalk and gets send to it to get another pack.
Hence Susie and Kris getting into the dark world together. Susie shapes the dark world after her soul, her wish for acceptance and friendship as well as her problems with her father being rather prominent there...as well as the rather...'difficult' puzzles that greet us on our way.
So why this whole adventure quest angle?
Well, that is us, the player, our wish and desire to escape reality and be a hero on a quest to save everyone. Obviously our soul inside Kris is swapping over as well, probably to shroud Kris' own goals that way.
For Kris it just means they have to try again, this time at a place where Noelle definitely is quite often, even without their input, the library computer room.
Why target Noelle at all?
Because she was also there when everything happened. Even if she wasn't allowed, couldn't tell them or plainly couldn't really remember as well, her dark realm would give Kris some answers, but it only sparsely did and highlights more of Noelle's current problems with her mother and her insecurities of being too weak than what happened with her sister, so it is not giving Kris the answers they seek.
So for this time they make sure to get the right parties involved, their mother and the police, because if anyone knows what had happened at that fateful day, it was them.
All in all, Kris motivation for being the roaring knight stems from their quest and need for answers, no matter at what cost, though I am not sure if they're gonna like what they find.
We as the player are essentially a tool to them to close the unnecessary fountains and to cloak themself with our obvious enjoyment of adventures.
But hey, it's Toby Fox, who knows, maybe the dog is the roaring knight XD
