Ashton Court - Bristol UK
Ashton Court is a mansion house and estate to the west of Bristol in England. Although the estate lies mainly in North Somerset, it is owned by the City of Bristol. The mansion and stables are a Grade I listed building. Other structures on the estate are also listed.
Ashton Court has been the site of a manor house since the 11th century, and has been developed by a series of owners since then. From the 16th to 20th centuries it was owned by the Smyth family with each generation changing the house. Designs by Humphry Repton were used for the landscaping in the early 19th century. It was used as a military hospital in the First World War. In 1936 it was used as the venue for the Royal Show and, during the Second World War as an army transit camp. In 1946 the last of the Smyth family died and the house fell into disrepair before its purchase in 1959 by Bristol City Council.
Ashton Court dates back to before the 11th century. It is believed that a fortified manor stood on the site, given to Geoffrey de Montbray, Bishop of Coutances, by William the Conqueror. In the Domesday Book it is referred to as a wealthy estate owned by the Bishop of Coutances, with a manor house, a great hall, and courtyards entered through gatehouses. The property passed through successive owners and at the end of the 14th century it was considerably expanded when Thomas De Lions, a nobleman originally from France, obtained a permit to enclose a park for his manor. The house was owned by the Choke family for some time. In 1506 it was sold to Sir Giles Daubeney, a knight and a Chamberlain of Henry VII. Henry VIII gave the estate to Sir Thomas Arundel in 1541 and four years later in 1545 Sir Thomas sold it to John Smyth. The Smyth family owned the property for the next 400 years. Smyth also bought the land which had been owned, until the dissolution of the monasteries, by Bath Abbey. He used the land to extend the deer park, bringing him into conflict with the residents of Whitchurch, who complained that he had used common land.

🌿 SKETCHES 🌿
Howdy!! I’m so excited for the owl house to come back!! (this caption is old and reposted, I can’t believe that by the time this post queues out, the owl house will be over ;-;) I can’t wait to see how they pull off season three!! I’m still bummed that it got cut short, but I have faith that the writing team will do a great job :)
I’ve recently moved and started up school again for the first time in a while!! Thank you all so so much for your continued support!! I really appreciate appreciate your patience these past few months, and as I try and balance school work, art, and figure out what supplies I may have left at home haha. I hope you’re all doing well!! :D
[ID: Sketchbook on a textured green background opened to a page with a few sketches, some in pen, pencil, or both. The top left sketch is a full body pencil sketch of a dragon flying. It’s head is in front of its body, and it’s turned right. It’s claws are stretched in front of it, one hand curled shut, the other open. Both wings are pointed down. It’s spine and tail arches above it’s head in a geometric line. It then bends down behind it, ending in an arrow point with rough impact lines at its tip. The dragon has an underbite, a rough scale pattern, horns and spikes going along it’s spine. To the right are two pencil sketches of Luz and Amity from The Owl House. Luz is in the top right corner. It is her season 3 design, and the sketch is cropped at her shoulders. She faces 3/4 right, and has a somewhat angry and wary expression. Behind her is a large, red circle with a messy yellow outline. Beneath her on the left is a bust sketch of Amity, facing left. She has an angry expression, and her season 3 design. Behind her is a similar red circle that sits under Luz’ circle. Overlapping on the right side of Amity is a bust of a wolf/deer/bird hybrid species of my own design. It has the head and neck of a wolf with a bare, textured nose, vacant eyes, deer antlers, ears, and markings. It faces 3/4 left, its head slightly tilted. Behind it is a fern, and some leaves. The final sketch takes up the bottom of the page, and is a landscape of a lighthouse on a hill with an attached home. Behind it is a view of the ocean. Thee lighthouse tower is 5 stories, is white and red striped, and has vines growing up it. The attached house is a cape with a dutch roof, a center chimney, large, tall windows, 2 dormers, and an alcove for the rounded front door. Off the side of the cape is an open air garage/patio with an old car parked underneath. Behind the top half of the page are two horizontal purple lines of varied widths. There are various watermarks reading “Leaves-&-Inks” on the page.
Image 2: Close-up of the pencil sketch of Luz from The Owl House. It is cropped at the top and right . edge of the page. The top of Amity’s head, and the top of the fern are on the bottom, and to the left the dragon’s claws are in frame.
Image 3: Crop of the deer/wolf/bird hybrid previously described. It is cropped at the right edge of the page, and part of Amity’s hair and ear, Luz’ shoulders, and the beginnings of the landscape sky are visible. One of the leaves on the left side is also cropped.
Image 4: Close-up of the pencil sketch Amity from The Owl House . It is cropped lower dragon claw and Luz’ right shoulder, halfway across the wolf hybrid’s face, and at one of the dragon’s wings.
Image 5: Close up of the lighthouse landscape previously described. It is cropped at the edges of the pages, except for the top edge, which shows the bottom half of the wolf hybrid’s face, and a sliver of amity’s upper arm.
Image 6: Crop focusing on the previously described dragon . It is cropped to the top and left end goes off the page. On the right edge, Amity’s hair is visible, along with the edge of Luz’ circle. On the bottom, the sky is visible, along with the uppermost floor of the lighthouse, split in half vertically. /end ID]

Blog 01: Kyoto, Ibaraki, Nara | 3/23 thru 3/25

Wabi Sabi
Wabi and Sabi both acknowledge the beauty in things based on specific characteristics that the social culture in the U.S. do not usually find beauty within. Wabi focuses on simplistic beauty, and the beauty of age and transformation influences Sabi.
Tenryuji (天龍寺, Tenryūji)
The first place we visited was the most important temple and world heritage site in Kyoto, the Tenryu-ji Temple. The landscape features an overlook of a large pond that guides you to the route of Sakura trees and a bamboo forest.
 Daimon-ji, Ibaraki
In the mountains of Ibaraki, Dr. Makoto Nakamura, a former professor of landscape architecture at Kyoto University, directed the design of the project of a new garden for the historic Buddhist temple in that area. The garden design uses borrowed scenery, acknowledging the presence of the surrounding hills and Japan's topography represented through mounds around the main pond.
Todai-ji (東大寺, Tōdaiji, "Great Eastern Temple")
The Todai-ji is a landmark of Nara built in 752 CE and is one of Japan's most famous and historically significant temples. Inside is the most prominent Buddha figure in the world, Daibutsu. Before entering the temple, you are surrounded by local deer and welcomed by Nara Park.
Teinei
Teinei is a Japanese cultural concept that expresses politeness, courtesy, and respect while being a good host and having manners in public areas. Everywhere, people greet you with compassion. I quickly got used to a new country, as I felt safe almost at all times.
Tea Ceremony
The Tea Ceremony was a highlight of our time in Daimon-ji, Ibaraki, since the group got to sit down and speak amongst ourselves while enjoying fresh Matcha Tea and wagashi, a Japanese sweet. We learned that during the ceremony, you eat the sweet first, then turn the tea cup three times so that the face of the cup is shown while you drink it. Our conversations were about all the displays and the Ikebana flower arrangement.

Horse Guard State Park
Tumblr media
Nestled in the picturesque town of Avon, Connecticut, Horse Guard State Park offers visitors a serene retreat into nature, rich with history and scenic beauty. Spanning approximately 105 acres, this undeveloped park provides a unique opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts to explore its tranquil landscapes and delve into its storied past.
Historical Significance
Established in 1964, Horse Guard State Park derives its name from the First Company Governor's Horse Guards, the oldest active mounted cavalry unit in the United States, founded in 1788. While the park itself has remained largely undeveloped since its acquisition, its connection to this historic military unit adds a layer of cultural importance to the natural surroundings. Visitors can reflect on the legacy of the Horse Guards as they traverse the same grounds that once served as training and operational areas for these esteemed cavalrymen.
Trail Overview
The park features a singular, well-marked trail that caters to hikers of varying skill levels. This out-and-back trail spans approximately 1.2 miles round trip, with an elevation gain of about 260 feet. The journey begins near the historic Derrin House, located at 245 West Avon Road (Route 167), where a small parking area accommodates visitors. As hikers embark on the white-blazed trail, they are greeted by a gentle ascent through dense woodlands, offering a peaceful ambiance away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
As the trail progresses, it presents a moderate challenge with a rocky incline leading to a prominent crag. This section requires careful footing, especially during or after rainfall when the rocks may become slippery. Hiking boots with good traction are recommended to navigate this portion safely. Upon reaching the summit, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, particularly breathtaking during the fall when the foliage transforms into a vibrant tapestry of colors.
Flora and Fauna
Horse Guard State Park is a haven for nature lovers, boasting a diverse array of plant and animal life. The forested areas are dominated by hardwood species such as oak, maple, and hickory, providing a lush canopy that shelters various understory plants. In the spring, wildflowers like trillium and lady's slipper orchids dot the forest floor, adding splashes of color to the verdant scenery.
Birdwatchers will find the park particularly appealing, as it serves as a habitat for numerous avian species. Common sightings include red-tailed hawks soaring overhead, woodpeckers drumming on tree trunks, and songbirds filling the air with their melodic tunes. Mammals such as white-tailed deer, foxes, and raccoons also inhabit the area, often spotted by observant hikers during quieter times of the day.
Visitor Information
Location and Parking: The park is situated at 245 West Avon Road, Avon, CT 06001. A modest parking lot near the trailhead accommodates several vehicles. Due to limited space, arriving early, especially on weekends, is advisable to secure a spot.
Trail Access: The white-blazed trail begins adjacent to the historic Derrin House. While the trail is open year-round, hikers should be mindful of seasonal conditions. Snow and ice in winter months can make the rocky sections particularly challenging, necessitating appropriate gear such as crampons or trekking poles.
Amenities: As an undeveloped state park, facilities are minimal. There are no restrooms or picnic areas, so visitors should plan accordingly. It's recommended to bring sufficient water, snacks, and other necessities to ensure a comfortable visit.
Regulations: To preserve the park's natural beauty and historical significance, visitors are encouraged to adhere to Leave No Trace principles. This includes carrying out all trash, staying on designated trails, and respecting wildlife habitats. Dogs are permitted but must be kept on a leash at all times to protect both the animals and other visitors.
Nearby Attractions
While visiting Horse Guard State Park, consider exploring other attractions in the Avon area:
