Prins Emanuel - Diagonal Musik II - looked to see if there were any new Fourth World albums and found this beauty

For his fourth full length album, we see the proficiency of instrumentalist and composer Prins Emanuel in full bloom as he turns head deep into the techniques he established on the preceding outing of Diagonal Musik. Here, he revisit what he refers to as a diagonal approach in composing; i.e. starting at one point and then moving to the farthest point in the process, as a way for him to connect the dots somewhere in the middle, or - like I previously described it for the liner notes of that album - “something akin to drawing only shadows and then finishing with the contours”.  And in the tradition of great sequels, this is a much larger and intricate production. While relying on the guitar as a formative backbone to many songs, the layering of brass and woodwinds houses these compositions in bold and sharply lit structures. Mallets and percussion adds an air of momentum but also grounds these tracks in earthy hues.  Thawed and gracious, Diagonal Musik II in essence creates a space that bridges the various paths of Prins Emanuel’s musical universe. At once post-minimalist and avant garde in nature while also peeking through the door at both IDM and folk music, the lingering sensation is that of a well balanced palate that doesn’t break under the presence of repetition. Enveloped in a fourth world approach to jazz and incorporating the more contemplative side of post punk or art pop, there is a story hidden in here that gives cause to the appropriation of these influences.  The inherent warmth of certain instruments play their part in this story. Emanuel often builds on the notion of ‘organic music’ but broadens the definition via subtle electronic enhancements that sit naturally alongside their acoustic counterparts. Take for instance the voice emulator sequence that opens “Kadens Tre” and is dashed on by guitar slides and flute drills to roll further down a hill of staccato percussion. A few tracks in, the lines are so blurred it becomes a natural state until the harsh and eerie sample loops of closing track “Östan Vind” finally breaks the spell. ”

3. A song that reminds you of summertime: Make Up by Barry Paquin Roberge

I first saw this band at a music festival in the middle of summer, and every time I listen to their stuff it reminds me of sitting at a wooden bench on a perfect summer evening, eating the kind of popcorn that's shitty but in an enjoyable way. BPR weren't the band I was there to see, but they ended up being my favourite new one from the trip.

Absolutely never fails to get me in a jammin mood.

20. A song that has many meanings to you: Andante Cantabile by Brian Crain

What an interesting prompt. This one took me the longest to decide on, but in the end I decided to go with a piece that I've found myself returning to and drawing comfort from in a lot of different contexts. I'm cheating a little in that it's an instrumental piece and thus very easy to ascribe different meanings to it, but I honestly can't think of any music with lyrics that fits the definition for me as well as this one.

28. A song by an artist with a voice that you love: Lonely the Night by Yola

Easiest pick of this whole set. What a set of pipes that woman has. This is the song that makes me appreciate her voice the most, but Shady Grove and Diamond-Studded Shoes are my other two favourites from her.

30. A song that reminds you of yourself: House by the Sea by Moddi

Also a tough decision - I don't think of songs in relation to myself very much, I guess. There are artists people know I like and some I'd consider critical parts of how my personality turned out (Weird Al, Iron and Wine, etc) but not so much specific songs. I ended up choosing this one because it struck a very deep chord with me, for reasons I still don't even really understand, during a time I was really struggling. I don't think I'll ever be able to listen to it without thinking of that time and the eventual growth that came out of it.

LE070 Kasper Bjørke The Beast. The Tree. The Man.

By now Kasper Bjørke has built a long, impressive back catalogue these past fifteen years, while continuing to push forward, exploring new territory—both as a solo artist, in various studio collaborations, and as a remixer and as a DJ. On his acclaimed fourth solo album After Forever (2014) Kasper created a new take on contemporary, melancholic synth pop, merging his productions into a multi coloured soundscape with echoes from Post Disco/Punk, Kraut and New Wave. It was a step away from the disco and house sound, that brought him into making music in the late 1990s. The full remix version of the album, After Forever Revisited (2015) included luminary interpretations—where especially the Michael Mayer remix grew into a proper club anthem.

Kasper then released a club workout of his own, Fountain of Youth (2016), a seven track mini-LP which was accompanied by remixes from Weval, Gerd Janson, Marvin & Guy, Multi Culti, Thomas Von Party and Marc Pinol. In 2017 Abstraxion and Kasper Bjorke teamed up for their second collaboration, the EP Matin / Nuit, and Kasper also co-produced another EP, entitled Black Magic together with French artist Colder, released on New York label Throne of Blood, along with remixes by The Golden Filter, Mutado Pintado (Paranoid London) and Pilooski.

Simultaneously though, Kasper was working on something entirely different, which would turn out to be a milestone in his career. The ambient album, The Fifty Eleven Project (released on Kompakt Records in October 2018) is a two hour long completely beat-less ambient voyage. Credited as the efforts of a quartet, since Kasper recorded and composed the 100% analogue album together with his musician friends Claus Norreen (Synthesisers), Jakob Littauer (Piano) and Davide Rossi (violin, viola and cello). The album was highlighted as number five on ‘The 10 Best Contemporary Albums of 2018’ in The Guardian and on ‘Best of 2018’ lists on i-D Magazine and XL8R, while Musik Week named it “A shimmering, nocturnal masterpiece” and Uncut wrote “sketch lines between the modern chamber music of Ólafur Arnalds and the collapsed-star ambience of early Tangerine Dream”.

Artist notes: I made this piece during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic during lockdown. I spend a lot of time in the countryside of Denmark with my family—right by the ocean, in the summerhouse, and this is where I recorded the music. It is actually the only piece of music I worked on during that time and somehow stands as a personal diary of those months in isolation. I tried to let the composition evolve in a natural flow, from airy soundscapes and field recordings, mixed with classical elements, which then around half way turn into a repetitive, hypnotic structure that draws on techno patterns and influences. The title The Beast. The Tree. The Man. comes from a famous quote by the native Indian chief Seattle (1786–1866), who was speaking about the symbiotic relationship between nature, man and wildlife…something to think about during the climate crisis, “All things share the same breath—the beast, the tree, the man. The air shares its spirit with all the life it supports”.

I use deep listening and in particular ambient music in my daily life as a way to calm down, as a de-stress tool and to contemplate or spark creativity…even while running. I have no doubt that ambient music has a healing effect on the mind and can really help in dealing with anxiety, which I also have done in the past.
