Prins Emanuel - Diagonal Musik II - looked to see if there were any new Fourth World albums and found this beauty
For his fourth full length album, we see the proficiency of instrumentalist and composer Prins Emanuel in full bloom as he turns head deep into the techniques he established on the preceding outing of Diagonal Musik. Here, he revisit what he refers to as a diagonal approach in composing; i.e. starting at one point and then moving to the farthest point in the process, as a way for him to connect the dots somewhere in the middle, or - like I previously described it for the liner notes of that album - “something akin to drawing only shadows and then finishing with the contours”.  And in the tradition of great sequels, this is a much larger and intricate production. While relying on the guitar as a formative backbone to many songs, the layering of brass and woodwinds houses these compositions in bold and sharply lit structures. Mallets and percussion adds an air of momentum but also grounds these tracks in earthy hues.  Thawed and gracious, Diagonal Musik II in essence creates a space that bridges the various paths of Prins Emanuel’s musical universe. At once post-minimalist and avant garde in nature while also peeking through the door at both IDM and folk music, the lingering sensation is that of a well balanced palate that doesn’t break under the presence of repetition. Enveloped in a fourth world approach to jazz and incorporating the more contemplative side of post punk or art pop, there is a story hidden in here that gives cause to the appropriation of these influences.  The inherent warmth of certain instruments play their part in this story. Emanuel often builds on the notion of ‘organic music’ but broadens the definition via subtle electronic enhancements that sit naturally alongside their acoustic counterparts. Take for instance the voice emulator sequence that opens “Kadens Tre” and is dashed on by guitar slides and flute drills to roll further down a hill of staccato percussion. A few tracks in, the lines are so blurred it becomes a natural state until the harsh and eerie sample loops of closing track “Östan Vind” finally breaks the spell. ”

make me a playliiiiist
3. A song that reminds you of summertime: Make Up by Barry Paquin Roberge
I first saw this band at a music festival in the middle of summer, and every time I listen to their stuff it reminds me of sitting at a wooden bench on a perfect summer evening, eating the kind of popcorn that's shitty but in an enjoyable way. BPR weren't the band I was there to see, but they ended up being my favourite new one from the trip.
11. A song you never get tired of: Lemon to a Knife Fight by the Wombats
Absolutely never fails to get me in a jammin mood.
20. A song that has many meanings to you: Andante Cantabile by Brian Crain
What an interesting prompt. This one took me the longest to decide on, but in the end I decided to go with a piece that I've found myself returning to and drawing comfort from in a lot of different contexts. I'm cheating a little in that it's an instrumental piece and thus very easy to ascribe different meanings to it, but I honestly can't think of any music with lyrics that fits the definition for me as well as this one.
28. A song by an artist with a voice that you love: Lonely the Night by Yola
Easiest pick of this whole set. What a set of pipes that woman has. This is the song that makes me appreciate her voice the most, but Shady Grove and Diamond-Studded Shoes are my other two favourites from her.
30. A song that reminds you of yourself: House by the Sea by Moddi
Also a tough decision - I don't think of songs in relation to myself very much, I guess. There are artists people know I like and some I'd consider critical parts of how my personality turned out (Weird Al, Iron and Wine, etc) but not so much specific songs. I ended up choosing this one because it struck a very deep chord with me, for reasons I still don't even really understand, during a time I was really struggling. I don't think I'll ever be able to listen to it without thinking of that time and the eventual growth that came out of it.

Andrew Forell’s 2022 Favorite Five plus 22
Tumblr media
Anteloper photo by Tim Saccenti
Here, in no particular order, are the five albums I’ve spent the most time with this year and another 22 for 22 that I am still enjoying or just catching up with.
Anteloper — Pink Dolphins (International Anthem)
youtube
In July I concluded my review by saying “The thrill of Pink Dolphins is the sense that branch and Nazary have a form of echolocation which guides them, that no matter how deep or murky the waters, they know exactly where the other is and what they are doing”. The loss of jaimie branch in August adds a poignancy to Pink Dolphins and the musical understanding she and Jason Nazary had developed and were deepening with every recording will be sorely missed.
Blackhaine — Armour II (Fixed Abode)
youtube
Dancer and choreographer Tom Heyes is best known in the US for his work with the artist formerly known as Kanye West. As Blackhaine he brings the ritualistic intensity of his dance style to the words and music of Armour II. He raps and sings about guilt, paranoia and the violence at the heart of contemporary Britain in the thick accent of his native Lancashire over a mix of drill and cinematic soundscapes. His collaboration with Iceboy Violet and Blood Orange on “Prayer” is one of the songs of year.
Kevin Richard Martin —  Downtown & Nightcrawler (Self-released)
youtube
Kevin Richard Martin AKA The Bug delves into the obsidian depths on these two releases. Slabs of dank, dub inflected post-industrial ambience conjure the pearl clutching dread associated with the housing estates & so-called slums for which the tracks on Downtown are named but also a sense of the communities surviving there in the face of poverty and the threats of gentrification. Nightcrawler is a sort of companion piece, a cinematic post jazz soundtrack to the dangerous glamor of pre-dawn streets which sounds, if possible, like Bohren & Der Club of Gore’s narcoleptic cousins. Highly recommended for underground commutes.
  The Photocopies — greatest hits volume 1 & volume 2 (Self-released)
Sean Turner is a Londoner in Michigan with a deep love of 1980s & 1990s indie guitar music and an output whose prolificacy is only surpassed by its quality. greatest hits volume 1 & volume 2 collect 30 tracks from singles and EPs released between June 2021 and September 2022. Although Turner isn’t reinventing any wheels, his knack for supple melodies and lyrics both heartful and witty elevates these songs. “Control Freak,” “Pop Quiz” and “(Wishing I Had) Tickets for Saint Etienne” are all giddy propulsion and self-aware pop culture references. Even at his most lovelorn the hooks are razor sharp, “I Can’t Imagine What You See In Him” combines yearning and snark over Wedding Present guitars and a glam stomp that The Sweet would have killed for. It’s great fun and heaven knows we’ve been miserable enough.

Yannick Mueller presents: Cabalero
Are you a fan of clubber music? Great tunes here!
Tumblr media
Yannick it's co-founder @offshore__events and Beatport Top100 artist.
Listen the new single CABELERO here:
About the artist:
Yannick was already a noticeable person at school, looking for something undefined. A person, always preferred a path against the current and far away from normality. Not restrained or bound by conventions, Yannick's visions and impressions are visibly transferred into his music.
He is creating their personal journey to reach an undefined destination, without a lack of impetus. One of his biggest successes is a remix for the upcoming duo "Township Rebellion" or his own releases on SOSO, Hive Audio, Moonbootique Records or Poesie Musik. His very emotional , groovy and transcendent sound got its roots in the Deep- and Progressive House as well as in Techno and Disco Music.
But it is even capable of going beyond typical conventions and acoustically mimics the always changing face of the city. After some performances at small clubs in his home district Aarau in 2013, he managed to establish himself in the techno szene of Switzerland. Today he can travel the whole world with his music in his luggage and has played in the best clubs in cities like Dubai, Lisbon, Barcelona, Zurich, Berlin, Hamburg, Moscow, Lucerne and many more.

“‘Golden Eyes And Tears’ is a love song for the thoughtful early mornings. Looking out the window in the taxi on your way home, or just winding down, running through the night in your head. We hope you all enjoy this track in those quieter hours.”
Tumblr media
Tracklist "DREAMSCAPES": 01. Dreamscapes 02. Wild Flowers 03. Heart Made Of Glass 04. Golden Eyes And Tears 05. Love Again (with Hugo Cantarra, Richard Judge) 06. Missing You 07. Cold Confetti 08. Monsters 09. I’ll Find You 10. My Reflection 11. Hello Echo 12. Insomnia 13. Mom’s Violin (with Lali) 14. Do You Ever Dream Of Me 15. Oceanside
