-----------------------
Your palms were sweating as you anxiously awaited takeoff. You didn’t fly often, in fact you avoided it as much as you possibly could; however, your position as production assistant at venturer landed you a seat on a redeye to New York. You had agreed to join two of your bosses on the work trip not considering your extreme fear of flying and now you sat between them attempting to hide your trembling hands and racing thoughts. You bit the inside of your cheek as the flight attendants walked the aisles to clear for takeoff and felt the weight of Declan’s shoulder meet your own. Your eyes carefully looked in his direction and your nerves were instantly calmed by the gentle curl of his lips, his sweet smile and warm brown eyes always had a way of grounding you.
If it weren’t for Declan being seated next to you, you weren’t sure if you would survive the eight-hour flight. No one else knew, but the two of you had been somewhat inseparable recently. What started as wholesome conversations and innocent glances quickly turned into inappropriate touches and passionate rendezvous. Your relationship was a secret you were both determined to keep, which made situations like this so much more difficult.
The plane began moving and all you wanted to do was squeeze Declan’s hand and hide your head in his shoulder to keep the nerves at bay. You wanted to hide in the warmth of his touch and the sweet scent of his cologne but you couldn’t, not with Rupert Campbell-Black sitting directly on your right.
Their friendship wasn’t enough for Declan to confide in Rupert about his new relationship with you, so you had to keep a professional relationship with both of them for the weekend.
This was hard for two reasons. The first being your deep need to constantly be near Declan; to have your hands on him, your mouth on him, to feel him buried deep inside you, you were desperate for him. The second thing that made a professional relationship with your bosses difficult was Rupert’s continuous flirting.
This wasn’t new for Rupert. He was known for being a flirt, and boy did he love toying with you. He would go out of his way to pay you compliments or make innocently dirty comments toward you. Nothing serious, just little things here and there, but it drove Declan mad. Sometimes you were convinced Rupert knew about your little secret and his flirting was just another way to mess with Declan and get under his skin, but you could never be sure.
As the plane gained speed you couldn’t stop your knee from bouncing- a nervous tick. Then suddenly a hand was on your thigh halting your movement.
“Darling, no need to be nervous” Rupert’s voice purred, his hand on your leg and a smirk on his face.
The contact wasn’t inherently sensual. For anyone else it would have been sweet or even friendly, but coming from Rupert, the touch was seeping with ulterior motives. His palm was gently resting just above your knee and the pad of his thumb was slowly drawing patterns into your skin. You were so distracted by the foreign touch on your thigh that you had hardly even noticed the plane was now lifted into the sky.
You fought the urge to look at Declan on your left knowing he was probably losing his shit right about now.
“See there. You’ve done it, good girl.” The smirk was still on Rupert’s lips as he winked playfully at you, taking his hand off your thigh with two quick pats.
You playfully glared at Rupert, internally hoping he wasn’t planning on being this aggravating for the whole trip.
“Try to calm down a bit, it’s a long flight.” Rupert spoke, resting his head back on his seat and closing his eyes. You didn’t know how he did it, but Rupert always managed to have such a silken and seductive tone to his voice.
“Don’t be afraid to wake me if you need some help relaxing. You know, I’m quite an avid member of the mile high club.” His eyes just barely opened enough to peek at you from beneath his lids, a full-blown smile breaking onto his face.
“Rupert.” You say his name as an attempt to warn him to shut the fuck up, but you can barely get it out without laughing. His ridiculous attempts to flirt with you, while flattering, were now becoming a running joke between the two of you.
You’re rolling your eyes and jabbing at Rupert with your elbow when you catch Declan shift in the corner of your eye. You let your gaze wander over to the man in the aisle seat, he now had a book in his hands. Seeing his furrowed eyebrows and tensed shoulders had you guessing he wasn’t actually reading but was instead listening as Rupert tried to make a pass at you.
You slouch down in your seat praying that you can just sleep for the entirety of the flight.
-
You’re not sure how much time has passed since takeoff, maybe two or three hours. Your dream of sleeping the flight away was crushed when you realized it was nearly impossible to get comfortable in the middle seat. You had thought about leaning on Declan’s shoulder to help you doze off but he was deep in his book and had hardly even looked in your direction since Rupert’s little charade earlier. As for Rupert, he had been fast asleep for pretty much the entire flight so far. His body was leaned against the window, his chest rising and falling as he slept.
Declan’s eyes were tired and trained on his reading, his lips pouted slightly as he focused on the book in his hands. God, you wanted to kiss him. This was absolute torture, sitting next to him for this long and barely speaking a word to one another. You quickly took note of the other passengers in the plane, almost everyone within sight was sleeping. So you took the chance and without much thought you let your hand find Declan’s thigh. As soon as he felt your touch, his eyes were on yours.
Bingo.
You blinked slowly at him, and a minuscule smirk appeared on his face. After a minute of thought he leaned in so close that you could feel the warmth of his cheek on yours.
“Meet me in the bathroom.” His whisper was gruff.
It wasn’t a suggestion; it was a command.
Without so much as looking at you, he stood, leaving his book in the seat and walking toward the back of the plane.
You sat in shock for a few seconds. This was so out of character for him. Jesus it was even more out of character for you, now wet at the idea of it. Having sex in public like this. Being together in such a risky way. The notion of getting caught right under your noses. It was stupid, it was dangerous. You couldn't. And then you were.
You were up out of your seat, your legs carrying you to Declan. You let your eyes scan the rows as you walked. Everyone was sleeping or preoccupied and thus not paying you a bit of attention. Thank god.
You reached the bathroom swiveling your head once more to make sure no one was watching you make such a disgustingly risqué decision. Your head buzzed with anticipation as you opened the door just enough to slip in. You were instantly met with Declan’s broad chest. He was looking down at you, a devious grin playing on his lips. In half a second his arm reached behind you locking the door.
“I wasn’t sure if you’d join me.” His accent was thick, and his hand reached for your hair, twirling it between his fingertips.
“You told me to.” You respond sweetly keeping your voice low.
Declan hummed as the words left your mouth. Using his strength he effortlessly spun your body, so you were now pressed against the wall with him directly behind you.
“Good girl.”
He uses the words that were on Rupert’s tongue just a few hours ago and you can’t help but squirm under his touch.
Your bodies were wedged together in such a confined space that you’re sure he can feel the desire radiating off your skin.
“Does my good girl think it’s funny when someone else has his hands on her?”
His touch is needy as it roams your body.
“Because I don’t find it very funny.” He’s still whispering as his hands find the waistline of your pants, tugging them down just enough to get what he needs.
“I think infuriating might be a better word.” His voice is simultaneously rough and tender.
You can feel his hand come between your bodies as he wastes no time letting his fingers find your center. He hasn’t even slid a finger into you, but he groans in approval upon feeling the wetness pooling at your entrance. Then, just as fast as you felt the warmth of his touch near your heat, it was gone. You wanted to whine at the loss of contact, but your grief was replaced by excitement at the sound of Declan’s belt coming undone. After a split second of rustling, you felt the tip of his length meet the slick of your cunt, keeping it right at your opening withholding the satisfaction of feeling him fill you completely. He was teasing you like it was some sort of punishment. You could feel him throbbing and you knew he was enjoying himself. It had you biting your lip to keep from making an obscene noise.
Suddenly the full pressure of him hit you and he was stretching you, bottoming out in one swift thrust. Just as a squeal was ready to leave your lips Declan’s large hand reached up to cover your mouth.
“Shh, we wouldn’t want anyone to hear us, would we?” He’s condescendingly murmuring in your ear and you’re lazily shaking your head in agreeance, his hand keeping your mouth shut.
He began thrusting in and out of you. While the pace was slow, the power behind his movements had your legs trembling and your arousal swelling.
He moves his head closer to yours, his lips nearly kissing your ear.
“That’s my good girl.”
He hums the praise, and you practically buckle under the words.
He can feel your body react to him and he takes it as an opportunity to pick up the pace. His thrusts are deliciously timed and hitting all the right places making you melt further into his body. Your pathetic moans are being muffled by his hand.
“My good girl yeah? All mine.” His words are a low quiet groan, reflecting his own arousal.
You’re furiously nodding your head to appease him when you feel Declan’s other hand trail down the front of your body until it stops at your clit. The small circles he begins pressing into your bundle of nerves opposes the feral way he’s fucking into you from behind.
The thrill of the moment is catching up with you and your panting into the hand covering your mouth. As your orgasm pools at your core threatening to burst, you clench around him causing Declan to let out a moan. His slip up makes you smile, and you know he can feel your grin on his palm because he starts plunging into you relentlessly, hitting your walls in that place that makes you scream out in pleasure. But you don’t scream, you can’t. Instead, you allow Declan’s touch on your lips to keep your mouth shut and squeeze your eyes closed to focus on your release.
“You gonna be good and cum for me?”
Like a key to a door, Declan’s words unlock the pressure building inside you and your hand instinctually reaches up to stop yourself from moaning in pleasure, clutching at Declan’s hand that’s already over your mouth.
Just as you reach your peak you can feel Declan’s fingers fumbling at your clit and his thrusts are growing sloppy. You can hear his shallow breaths, and you reach your hand back to tug at his hair. Your fingers play with the dark curls, and you know it’s enough to send him over the edge. With a few more thrusts deep into your sopping core, he buries his face in the crook of your neck to keep his grunts from being heard.
He lets himself rest there for just a minute, hands caressing your body as you lean back into him. You’re both trying to regain composure through deep breaths and gentle touches before cleaning up and heading back into the sea of sleeping passengers.
“You go first, I’ll wait a bit and then go out.” His words are laced with amusement as he fastens his belt.
He’s glowing with pride as he places a quick kiss to your temple and pats your ass as you turn toward the door. You were like two teenagers, unable to keep their hands off each other. Never in your life did you think you would be the person having sex in an airplane bathroom, yet here you were- hair messy and knees weak from getting fucked against the wall of a lavatory.
“Smug bastard.” You whisper back at him through a smile as you open the door.
You creep your way back to your seat and your stomach turns at the sight in front of you.
A wide-awake Rupert Campbell-Black was sat comfortably awaiting your return. The shit eating grin plastered on his face was enough to tell you he was going to have a lot to say about this.
“Welcome back.” His voice was a poor excuse of a whisper as you find your spot next to him.
You’re avoiding eye contact and trying to hide the blush on your cheeks when you hear soft footsteps coming up the aisle.
“Ah Rupert, how’d you sleep?” Declan’s sliding into his seat next to you and peering over at Rupert as he speaks. His demeanor is calm and a bit playful unlike yours which is completely frazzled with a hint of humiliation.
Judging by the smirks on both of their faces you know Rupert knows where the two of you disappeared to, and you know Declan loves that he knows.
“Oh, just fine old pal.” Rupert’s tonguing his cheek to keep from chucking in enjoyment, his eyes darting between you and Declan.
“Okay both of you just shut up.” You finally huff out in defeat covering your face with your hands. You could hear Rupert’s soft laugh and feel Declan’s reassuring touch on your leg. This was bound to be the longest flight of your life.

Declan O'Hara imagine - I'm not doing this.
Tumblr media
A/N: I thought about this one shot weeks ago... finally writing it. Probably been done already by someone else but who isn't obsessed with rivals atm. I also haven't written in years.
Summary: Declan is fighting against himself and everything he believes in when you come into the picture.
Warnings: Age Gap, fem!reader, NSFW content 18+, strong language, bit of a slow burn.
"Taggie, honestly, I don't know why you'd ever willingly add Brussel sprouts to anything." You chuckled as you both crept through the door to the kitchen.
"They're good for you!" Taggie tried to defend her culinary choices for her Sunday lunch.
"If they're good for you then I always want to be bad."
"Who's being bad?" A thick Irish accent filled the room as Taggie's dad sauntered in, a mug of coffee in one hand with his other burrowed deeply into his trouser pocket.
"Dad, this is (Y/N). (Y/N) was just objecting to my sprouts."
"Oh yeah, I agree, terrible things. Even the dog won't eat 'em" Declan brought his mug to his lips, smirking through the thick moustache that hid his upper lip.
You felt your insides alight at his dark, playful expression as he teased Taggie.
That was the first time you knew you were a bad friend. A bad friend who wanted your new friend's father to lift you onto the kitchen table and bury his head between your thighs.
The thought made your cheeks burn red as you laughed at Declan's remark and Taggie's complaints against him.
The man left the kitchen when his eyes flitted back to you, sending you a nod and a 'lovely to meet you, (Y/N). '
You couldn't help but replay the way he said your name in your head over and over and over again until you were desperate for his voice to sing it again.
The next time you saw Declan O'Hara was at the O'Hara New Years Eve party.
"You better not spend the whole time in here. I'd actually like you to put a dress on and come out to dance at some point tonight." You pleaded with Taggie as she clasped your necklace for you.
"I'll try but I can't make any promises. Anyway, you're out there to be my eyes and ears. You need to tell me if anyone complains about the food, okay?"
"Yes, Taggie. But no one will because you are amazing and your food is amazing and you are so right for not letting me help you cook or serve after I burnt the soup last time." You faced her as she continued to prep the ingredients she would need for the feast she had planned.
"You are a great friend but you are a terrible cook." Taggie agreed. You felt a lump in your throat at the words. Were you a great friend for literally fantasising over her father after almost every time you had an interaction with him? "Now please go next door and make sure that all the tables have the right cutlery for me?"
"Anything for you, Agatha!" You headed to do as you were told. Looking down to smooth out your dress when you felt yourself collide with something solid.
"I'm so sorry!" You looked up to see Declan turning, laughing softly at your clumsiness.
"It's okay, love." Declan's own eyes fell down your body, his lips parting slightly as he took in the sight of you all dressed up. He knew you were an attractive girl but you were Taggie's age and one of her only friends in the surrounding neighbours beside Lizzie. "You look beautiful."
The sincerity in his voice caused a chill to roll up your spine.
"Thanks. You look very handsome too, Mr. O'Hara." You didn't know why you felt so shy around him. You were so used to owning your space and holding your confidence when you fancied someone.
"That's very kind, (Y/N). And it's Declan. I don't want to tell you again." Declan send you a wink as he started to pass you. "Hey, and no snogging my son at midnight. You're way too good for him."
Your heart squeezed at the taunt. Patrick was a gorgeous boy and he had tried to flirt with you when he met you but you were far too interested in Declan for Patrick to make any dent in your crush.
"He's not my type anyway." You managed to find your tongue to quip back an answer.
"Good girl."
Good Girl.
You had to bite the inside of your cheek to stop yourself replying something entirely inappropriate in response.
As the night went on, you felt your heart drop more and more. Declan was obsessed with his wife. His wife was obsessed with anyone else.
You were desperate to try and make more conversation with the man but almost everyone was grabbing his attention to discuss some work matter or other.
As the countdown began, you gut wrenchingly watched as Maud and Declan kiss. You put on a smile and exchanged celebrations with those around you. Giving Lizzie a kiss on the cheek as her husband blanked her as he usually did.
"Happy New Year, chicken." Lizzie pressed on a faux smile as you did.
"Happy New Year, Lizzie."
"A little advice for your new years resolution if I may?" Lizzie whispered as she drew you closer.
"You may want to get better at hiding your admiration for Taggie's father. I know nothing hurts more than something you can't have." Lizzie's words took you back, you felt your cheeks burning red and your smile drop.
"Oh, Lizzie, I'm mortified! Please don't tell Taggie." You begged.
"Not a peep." Lizzie motioned locking her lips with a key before grabbing your hands to singing sway along with the room.
The night went on and Lizzie tried to encourage you to join in festivities. You drank more and more, being forced away whenever you tried to help Taggie wash up, and you soon found yourself needing some quiet time.
You let yourself into Declan's office, leaning against the desk, fingers gripping the underside to give you some stability when the room started to ever so slightly spin.
You closed your eyes. Inhaling a shaky breath when you heard the door creek open.
"I thought someone unwanted had decided to sneak through my things." Declan's melodic accent forced your eyes open.
"I'm wanted, am I?" You smirked slightly, through the sickness as your eyelids closed again.
Declan didn't respond. Instead he just studied you from across the room. His hands in his pockets, his stance leaning back just ever so slightly.
"You struggling there?" Declan was amused at your state.
You tried to push yourself off the desk but instead felt yourself stumble forward.
Declan's amusement quickly turned into concern as he stepped forward to catch you.
"Steady on." Declan had managed to stop you from hitting the floor, your face pressed against his chest, his strong arms engulfing you as he pulled you up towards him.
"I'm so sorry..." You mumbled as you leant away to look up at him.
His features were so strong up close. You could smell the whisky on his breath as your eyes lingered on his lips.
"Maybe we should get you some water and put you to bed."
Declan's words drew your eyes to his own. His chest seemed to go tight as he starred down into your glassy (Y/E/C) eyes.
"You can take me to bed any time you want, Mr O'Hara." Your words slurred together with your weak attempt of drunkenly flirting.
"It's Declan."
"Okay, Declan..."
That was the first time Declan had heard you say his name. Something inside him knew he wanted to hear you say it again but he fought against the thought, pulling away from you as you gained your stance.
"Let's hope you don't remember this in the morning, ay?" Declan tried to make light, convincing himself the electric feeling he had was nothing.
"Why? I finally got my chance in your arms. My dream come true."
"Yeah, you really won't want to remember this in the morning. Come on..." Declan opened the door, waiting for you to follow suite. The noise of the party echoed around you; you had almost forgot it was still going on outside.
"Have you ever thought about me?" You had no idea where this liquid confidence had stirred from.
There was a pause before he answered.
"No." He was lying. He knew he was lying. He watched the disappoint subtly encase your eyes as you pursed your lips into a thin smile.
"If I was dreaming, you would've said yes. Goodnight, Mr O'Hara."
"Goodnight, (Y/n)."
-------------------------------------------------------
As the weeks went on, rivals became friends. Friends became rivals. You grew closer to the O'Hara family and the moment from NYE had simply been forgotten. Or so you thought...
The dread that had filled your gut that New Years Day after you remembered the incident brewed inside of you for weeks. You had successfully avoided Declan, only seeing him in group scenarios and meetings for Venturer.
"(Y/N), I left some of my flyers on the table in the living room if you want to use them." Taggie climbed into her car, shouting over at you as she rushed off. You both had been going door to door for Venturer in different areas to cover more ground but you had run out of flyers to hand out.
"Thanks, Tag!" You rushed inside, running through the house that still held a cool air inside despite the early summer warmth outside.
"Careful!" You heard a voice proclaim as your bodies hit.
Within the blink of an eye, you had hit the floor with a body on top of you.
"Are you alright?" Declan groaned as you winced underneath his weight. The hard floor sent a wave of pain through your back but you had managed to not hit your head.
"Ow." You grumbled, squeezing your eyes shut.
"Did you hit your head?" Declan propped himself up on his arms, examining your face with a furrowed brow of worry.
"No." Was all you managed to say.
"I thought we had left bumping into each other for last year." Declan recalled on when you knocked into him last New Years Eve before the party had started.
"Clearly I'm not very good at keeping to New Year's resolutions."
Declan chuckled, pushing himself up before offering his hand.
You felt the warmth of his body leave you and the coldness of the floor pierce your bones.
You took his hand; hauling yourself to your feet.
"You sure you're okay?" Declan insisted. His hand reached out to take grip of your waist, his thumb and finger burning against your skin that had been revealed by the edge of your venturer top riding up. His other finger waved past your eyes, checking for concussion.
"I'm fine. No more running in the house with blind corners." You took a step back from the man, straightening your shirt to try and control the lingering feeling of the mans hand on you.
"Now... are we okay?" Declan rephrased,
"What do you mean?"
"(Y/N), don't play stupid. You've avoided me for almost half a year now. You won't even walk around the house without Caitlin or Taggie next to you."
You didn't think that Declan would've noticed with how busy he was with work and his life. Why would he have cared where you were or what you were doing in the house?
"I'm still living down my behaviour at New Years." You reluctantly admitted.
"What, that? Everyone says stuff they shouldn't when they've had a few too many. Doesn't mean you have to never look me in the eye again."
"What I said was completely inappropriate."
"Yes, it was. You're the same age as my daughter and I'm a married man but I'll have to admit I'm a little flattered." Declan tried his best to ease your anxiety. "I don't exactly see myself a teenage heart throb."
"I'm not a teenager." You bit back, the harshness your voice surprising you both.
"There's not much difference. You're practically a child and should be going for someone your own age." Declan quit the joking tone he had been using, taken back by your defence.
"Don't call me a child. I'm not the same age as Caitlin. I am older than Taggie and I've been with men before so I'm not playing silly little girl games over here. This isn't some school girl crush on a handsome teacher. You're right my feelings for you are inappropriate because you're a married man and I'm friends with your daughter but not because of my age. I know who I am and what I feel." A fire lit up your chest as you finally had broken out of the timidness you hated.
"You have no idea what you're talking about." Declan took a step closer to you, his stare burning into you as he lowered his voice.
"You're the one who reads people. Tell me what you see in me." You matched him, standing so close to him you could feel his breath on your face as you gritted your teeth.
The air was thick. The silence of the house engulfing you both, your breath audible and quick. You thought you could almost hear your heart thudding against your chest.
Declan was the one to break away. Storming to his office with a hard slam of the door.
How did your conversation turn so heated?
That night Declan tossed and turned, his head filled with moments of you. He rolled over and gently woke up his wife with soft strokes on her shoulder blades.
"What?" Maud hummed, rolling her head over her shoulder to Declan.
"I'm awake." Declan pressed himself against his wife.
"I can feel that." Maud looked at him through a sleepy gaze.
"Let me touch you." His fingers glided over her skin until he reached the space between her legs. Maud moaned quietly as Declan began to part her folds with his finger.
"Declan..." Maud sighed as she pressed her backside into him, feeling his member hard against her.
Declan wasted no time in entering her. He closed his eyes as his dick pressed inside his wife. And all he could see through the darkness was your eyes looking up at his. The first time he had seen you in the kitchen. The bump in the hall, the incident in his study, every time he had caught you intensely listening to one of his speeches to the group, the crash against the floor. You underneath him. The tiny bit of skin his hand had managed to caress from the bottom of your shirt.
He had never thought of you before. Not with Maud, not with his own hand and imagination and he couldn't make sense of why that night he finished almost as fast as his inexperienced teenage self had once before.
-----------------------------------------------------------
It had been Declan's turn to avoid you from that day. He couldn't be too close to you without feeling his throat go dry, a sickening guilt and twisting conflict rising with it.
It was the evening you'd find out whether Venturer was a real contender against Corrinium.
The O'Hara house was filled with people eagerly waiting except one who had decided to leave the house for good.
The house erupted in cheers and celebrations as the phone call confirmed it for you all.
You watched through the window as Maud drove off, leaving Declan and Taggie behind.
"We did it!" Taggie squeezed you tightly before embracing her father and to your surprise, Declan had also pulled you into a tight hug. You had hoped no one picked up on the slight awkwardness that left the embrace when Declan moved onto join the others. You couldn't help but feel it.
The party went on and you tried to keep an eye on Declan without making it too obvious (like Rupert and Taggie had failed to).
When Rupert left Declan's side for another whiskey, (Taggie swiftly disappearing just after), Declan slipped away to his study. You followed.
"I'm sorry about Maud." You made your presence known as you watched him place his glass down on the desk, his back to you when he replied.
"Don't."
"Fine." You clenched your jaw, unsure of what to say next at the warning in his tone.
"What do you want from me?" Declan's voice had a hint of desperation. He turned to face you. You had seen this look before.
"I don't––"
"––No 'cause you followed me in here. You are everywhere I look. I can't even get a wink of sleep most nights without dreaming of two things. You or beating Tony fucking Baddingham. And I can't think of you because you're young enough to be my daughter and I'm a fucking hypocrite for telling Rupert to stay away from Taggie when I look at you in that dress and wonder what you would look like with it on this floor right now. I'm not doing it. I can't do this."
Declan's outburst kept your feet frozen in place. Had he really just admitted to wanting you as badly as you wanted him.
You felt your hand roll the zipper of your dress down your side, your body moved without force as you slipped the straps over your shoulders and let it fall to the floor.
"Fuck..." Declan barely breathed out the word. His stare devouring every inch of your skin.
"I'm not doing this." Declan uttered again barely even audible as if only to himself before striding towards you. His fingers found your hips as he thrust you against the door.
His lips were on yours before your back found the solid wood behind you.
You reached up and wrapped your arms around his neck, pulling yourself up towards him, trying to bring your body as close to his own as possible. You needed every gap between you gone. You wanted to feel the heat of him even on this sticky summer evening.
"What am I doing?" Declan broke away and dropped to his knees, placing a firm hand on the middle of your stomach to hold you flush against the door.
There was a deep hunger in his eyes as he lifted one of your thighs up onto his shoulder, never breaking his gaze from your face to almost check if what he was doing was allowed.
You threw your head up, trying to find the air he had stolen from you, one hand finding a grip within his dark curls as your welcome reply.
"Please." You whispered.
Declan moved your panties to the side, a finger running over your folds, sending fire against your skin before he closed his mouth around you.
You let your eyes roll back as his tongue darted across your clit. Electricity filled your body with every moment of contact.
You felt his fingers circle lightly around your entrance. Your hand jumped from his thick curls to tightly grip the back of his own that pushed against your stomach. His grip on you felt as if it were all that was holding you up.
"You want me this badly?" Declan asked with a mixture of teasing and shock. The wetness of your heat coated the tip of his fingers and glistened on the dark hairs of his moustache.
"I've imagined this so many times." You admit honestly.
"I best live up to your expectations then." Declan inserted a finger inside of you, causing a sharp gasp to escape your lips, which made Declan's cock twitch inside his boxer shorts. "Shhhh"
You placed your free hand over your mouth to which Declan smiled a toothy grin at you.
"Good girl" he purred.
Declan rose to his feet as he placed another finger inside of you, thrusting them in and out of you in a painfully slow motion that only made you ache for more.
Declan turned the lock on his door with his other hand before pulling himself away from you completely.
You pouted at the lack of contact to which he tutted.
"So impatient." He uttered as he undid his belt, pulling it from its loops and then kicking his trousers down.
Your eyes fell on the large member pressed against his underwear. The tip seeping precum through the material in a dark stain.
"Go to my desk." Declan ordered.
You almost ran over, Declan caught you by the waist and lifted you up onto it. Spreading your legs with his knee.
"Are you sure you want this?" Declan stripped himself of his shirt, revealing his chest covered with dark thick hair that you reached out to touch. This didn't feel real.
"More than anything." The words were so quiet but Declan seemed to hear them as he freed himself from his underwear.
You reached behind and unclasped your bra.
"Jesus..." He took a handful of your breast, squeezing you firmly as he stroked his member.
"Declan, please." You couldn't wait any longer. The ache pained you.
Declan didn't need to be told twice.
He tore your underwear down your legs and pressed his tip slowly into you.
You bit down on your lip hard to stop yourself from making any noise.
"Holy fuck..." Declan failed at being quiet. You were so tight against him he felt he could've finished inside of you within minutes.
You reached forward and hooked a grip behind his neck, encouraging him deeper inside of you.
"Fuck me please." you pleaded, trying to move your own hips to create some friction.
Declan took the hint and began thrusting into you quickly. His fingers almost bruising your skin as he held you steady on the desk.
The rattle of the belongings on the desk seemed to echo around the room alongside the slapping of skin.
Declan lifted you up, still inside of you and gently placed you down on the floor.
He hovered above you, just like he had once before, watching your face twist in pleasure as he fucked you.
You squeezed his shoulders, your nails leaving an impression whilst he brought you closer to your climax. You pressed your hips up into his creating hot friction against your clitoris, making you throb inside.
"Declan..." You tried to let him know; still trying to whisper to stay quiet.
"Cum for me, princess." Declan smirked, his stare never faltering as he rode you through to your end. He could feel you tighten around him only encouraging him to fuck you harder and deeper.
You bit down on your hand as your climax convulsed through you. Your body shaking in between Declan and the floor.
Declan moved you both effortlessly, lying on his back with you sat on top of him.
You leant ever so slightly forward, steadying yourself with your hand stretched out against his chest.
You smiled wickedly at him as you rolled your hips.
You felt exhausted by your own finish but knew you wanted to see the older man in the same state.
"That's a good girl." Declan held onto your hips, helping you pick up your pace.
His lips parted as he watched you ride him, sweat dripping down your skin mixing with his own as his dick twitched inside of you.
"Fuck (Y/n)." Declan cursed.
You shifted your hand to his neck, Declan almost laughed, flipping you again so that he was behind you. Both of you on your knees as he held you against his chest, his hand wrapped firmly around your neck with his opposite arm securely around your middle.
The sensation was almost unbearable as his thick member pumped in and out of you at such speed.
"You think you want to be a bad girl?" Declan hissed in your ear.
You could only shake your head.
"Bad girls get punished." Declan bit hard down on your shoulder and you fought to not cry out in a mixture of pleasure and pain.
"You're mine now." Declan's own proclamation brought himself to his own climax. He pulled out, spilling his seed over his own thighs to avoid finishing inside of you much to your own disappointment.
"I know you wanted that inside of you like the dirty girl you are." Declan teased you as he gave your throat one final soft squeeze.
You fell against him, both trying to catch your breath.
"Declan?" A voice and a knock came at the door.
"Shit..." The realisation of what had just happened and where it just happened hit Declan like a cricket bat to the face.
"I'll be out in a mo." Declan scrambled for his underwear and you did the same.
"Hurry up! I know that's where you're hiding the good stuff!" Bas' voice was more evident now and whilst he was definitely talking about the whiskey. The both of you couldn't help but laugh.

Soft golden rays bleed through the aged windows of the O'Hara estate. Its owner, Declan, sits comfortably on a worn chair in the middle of his study. Books and papers litter the room, even on the small sofa adjacent to the chair. As the fireplace crackles, the bright orange flames warm your skin as you kneel naked between your employer's thighs.
Declan groans as he feeds you his cock. His thighs widen, as much as his unzipped trousers will allow, on the tattered chair, giving you more room to swallow him down. His heart beats steadily under his lush brown sweater as you suckle his cock while looking up at him under your lashes.
Declan enjoyed times like these when the house was empty, and he got you all to himself. With Maud gone, leaving everything to Taggie was unfair, so he caved and hired a housekeeper. Little did he realize he'd fall head over heels for you.
You both took your time dancing around one another like nervous teenagers at a school dance. Harmless flirting and late-night conversations over the meals you'd cook for him led to Declan taking matters into his own hands.
He was used to control. He enjoyed it, really. The power felt comfortable, and he had no issue wielding it.
Declan was still on edge one day after a trifling day at Coriniuim. His usual soak and cig in the tub wasn't helping. The radio was blasting ear-aching songs, and the water was getting too cold too fast, but that all changed when you walked in on him with an armful of fresh towels.
He took a chance, one that could've ended with him locked up, but you didn't run. You followed his dubious commands and let him exert his dominance, allowing him to reign over you.
Since then, you two have been inseparable.
"Ah, right on time," Declan notes, looking at the clock perched on the mantle in his study as the large front door creaks open.
Declan mentioned inviting a friend over earlier in the day, but you didn't think he meant now.
The sight of your wide doe eyes makes his gut fervently twist. He's always appreciated someone yearning after what was his, especially an individual so well-loved by the women of Rutshire.
"Don' stop, Love," Declan instructs. His Irish accent dips low as he curls a solid hand around your head when you start to draw back. Your wary, garbled sounds vibrate Declan's cock eliciting a hiss from his lips. He sends you a pensive look and keeps you locked as the steps draw near. "You know I like people ta watch, but I wan' to try somethin' new."
Your heart lodges in your throat. Declan had divulged this kink not long after the two of you began dating. It was harmless fun flirting with other men while Declan observed from the shadows like a deviant; the journalist grew feral until he could no longer hold himself back, scurrying off with you in his arms, leaving the poor target in a stupor.
No one could ever come close to Declan; you never want them to.
"I seem to have come at a rather inconvenient time, have I not?" A pondering English baritone fills the room.
Rupert Campbell Black.
With arms crossed, the affluent man leans on the rustic doorframe. He catches your uneasy gaze with a cheeky smile, prompting a wildfire in your belly.
Declan shakes his head, his thick mustache ticking excitedly, "Not at all. Come in."
You try to move again, but Declan doesn't budge an inch. Your brows knot in confusion as your hands fly to cover your exposed bits as best you can.
"Say hello, ta Rupert, Swee'heart," Declan instructs, his dark chestnut eyes alight with devilry.
Your gaze trails from the man's supple leather loafers and pressed lined slacks to the sepia colored dress shirt that exposes a svelte chest as the top two buttons are undone. Rupert oozes high society and overt confidence, the kind of man you'd go dumb even looking at.
"My, my, where has Declan been hiding you?" Rupert croons. His azure orbs fixate with dark intrigue at your naked, shivering form.
As you greet Declan's neighbor, a slight garbled noise barely registers to the men. Tauntingly, Rupert leans over and puts a hand behind his ear, "Sorry, Angel. What was that?"
Your belly flips, and butterflies flutter carelessly in the wake of being so degraded. Still, your cunt produces a wave of arousal and clenches around nothing.
Knowing he doesn't have much patience, you chance another look at Declan and wish you hadn't. His white teeth bared, and his lips pulled back into a light sneer, like a wolf facing down prey, waiting for you to heed his command.
Declan bites back a moan at the hedonic sensation of you stringing together a messy greeting for the affluent man.
Rupert snickers. "Aren't you cute."
"Thatta' girl." He praises before thrusting his length into your throat and cutting off your air.
He waits for a beat, relishing in the watery glaze that coats your eyes and how your chest heaves. Fidgety hands dig into his darkened slacks, knocking the loose ends of his belt. Drool spills down your chin and settles at the base of his cock.
"Ya know ya waited too long ta give Rupert a warm welcome." He fumes, his expression twisting lightly with displeasure.
With a soft growl, Declan eases his grip. You fall back on your heels, a blight, coughing up spittle and trying to suck down fresh air at the same time.
"Might I say, you've got a real treasure here," Rupert leers down at your messy face and spit-soaked breasts that make your nipples shine in the light. "Lovely to meet your acquaintance."
"Though' you migh' like a taste." Declan offers, looking up at Rupert like you weren't perched at their feet, anxiously awaiting their next move.
"Would I ever." A Cheshire grin tugs at Rupert's lips. He makes a show of folding his button-down sleeves over his muscular forearms as he stalks around you.
Declan beckons you with the tilt of his head, "C'mere, Love. I ain't done wit' your mouth."
You sniffle before taking your place between his knees once more. Declan can sense your worry as Rupert traces a finger down your spine while he crouches behind you. "Don' worry abou' him. He won' do anythin' out of line."
Declan taps his bulbous crown against your swollen lips, drawing your attention away from the blue-eyed beau. His sturdy thighs are a protective shield, enveloping you like a fortress from harm.
As curious fingers tickle your sticky thighs, your lips part with a gasp, allowing Declan to thrust into your warm, wet mouth.
"Jesus Christ, she's soaked." Rupert husks as he softly skims your glistening folds. Your cunt throbs from his unfamiliar touch, coursing a frightening spark of arousal up your spine.
"She's not 'ad much experience." Declan hisses as his crown breaches the tight confines of your throat. Your hand tugs at the thick base that's peppered with dark curls, fingers barely overlapping, pumping in time with his languid thrusts across your tongue.
"You don't say." The Englishman trails off, no doubt thinking of all the crude ways he could defile you.
As you start a slow rhythm, bouncing your head up and down Declan's cock, making the older man unashamedly moan, Rupert swipes his fingers across your seam and gathers all your shiny slick, drawing it up to your clit before lazily circling the tender bud.
Bright lights erupt under your eyelids. Blood rushes south, pooling in your core, heightening your suffocating lust as your body bends to his will.
"Ah ah, Angel." Rupert tsks, grabbing hold of your wriggling hips. His grasp keeps you stock still, unable to evade his voracious touch.
The pads of Declan's fingers press into your scalp as a soft warning. "Be good ta Rupert."
Being pushed and pulled between the two older men was agony of the luscious kind. You only knew of Declan's touch, the succulent highs and lows. The amorous sublime.
A gentle hand glides over your ass before massaging the plump cheek. Your frantic cries are a mumbled mess as you're pushed higher and higher into the pleasurable abyss from Rupert's caress.
He winds two fingers into your core, cursing from your tightness, and splays his dexterous digits along your walls. His thumb lands square on your clit, swiping back and forth with prowess. "So sweet and responsive. Such a good girl." he curls his fingers along your walls, drawing pathetic noises from your chest.
Your body rolls like waves, back and forth between the two men. Rupert's teeth sink into the tender skin of your ass before a gentle tongue soothes the marks and trails down the valley of your cheeks, causing you to choke around Declan's cock.
A wad of spit lands directly on your rosebud just before a wicked tongue ravishes the tight, untouched hole.
Your belly drops at his vulgar touch. No one ever touched you there before. A heavy wave of arousal slips from your cunt as you fight the urgent need for release. Rupert moans hungrily as he laps the rim of your ass.
Your incessant wriggling alerts Declan to Rupert's perverted actions.
"What'd I say, ya daft cunt?" Declan fumes. His mustache twitches as he shoots daggers at the man posed behind you.
Rupert swirls his tongue one final time before leaving your rosebud with a loud pop. "Sorry, chap. I forgot you haven't filled all her holes yet." The tug of his lips says otherwise.
Declan mumbles under his breath and leans back in his chair, focusing on you. "What'a fuckin' sight," he grunts, yanking your tear-coated face off his girth. His large hand completely cups the side of your face, making you feel like a doll with glossy, swollen lips as he stares at you like a man possessed.
Rupert twists his wrist, and your eyes grow wide as saucers. The need to come moves to the forefront of your mind. Declan can tell you're fighting, doing everything you can to hold back as you're slowly dragged to the edge.
Your jaw goes slack, and eyelids flutter; you're willing to endure any repercussions for coming without approval, but then Declan stamps your orgasm out just as quickly as it started.
"No, no, no. Don' be greedy," he tsks, shoving your dumbstruck face back down onto his length.
With Declan's cock stretching your lips and drooling pre cum over your taste buds and Rupert curling his fingers into the spongy spot behind your clit, your nerves scream for release.
The insides of your thighs are soaked, slick from want and a need held so close yet so far away. A soft cry falls from your spit-stained lips as Declan snatches your head off his cock and curves a large hand under your chin, holding you like a precious piece of art.
His opaque orbs sweep across your face, wild and feral; he's on the edge of breaking but holds steady like the stubborn man he is.
"Come on, Declan, let the girl come," Rupert implores to the stoic man holding captive your utmost pleasure.
The corner of Declan's lips tilts. He knows what'll happen. He can see it in your face, how truly gone you are, how nearly close the dam is to breaking.
"Go on, show 'im what he's missin', Swee'heart." Declan encourages, finally allowing you the taste you've wanted all this time.
Your body writhes in their combined hold with unkempt ecstasy as a ravenous cry fills the large study. You come like a geyser, locking like a vice around Rupert's fingers, forcing a curse from his lips as you coat his wrist and trousers with your creamy release.
"Jesus-" Rupert moans, dark and depraved, watching with rabid fascination as your core pulses in time to the beat of his heart.
Declan gathers you into his arms, away from the still man, propping your knees on either side of his thighs. "Sit on the couch and watch," he orders a dumbstruck Rupert before easing you down on his swollen cock.
A whimper catches in your throat from the obscene stretch as his girth widens your channel for the first time that day. Declan grabs your ass and steadily bounces you on his length, helping you rise and fall since your legs have turned to jelly.
"Gone so dumb, ya can' even move," Declan mocks. Coarse whiskers chafe your skin as he nibbles your chin, pouring filthy praises against your jaw, "Still so tight. Maybe two cocks'll do the trick," he drives his girth into your exhausted body. "Wan' your pretty cunt gapin' fa' me."
The seam of his brown sweater grazes your clit on every thrust; the fibers are soft yet overstimulating, your body boils, on the verge of combusting, and there's nothing you can do.
A low moan catches your attention, dragging you from your frenzied state. As you turn your head to find the strange noise, you see Rupert with his swollen cock in his hand, barely out of his trousers. His cock weeps, the bulbous tip pulsing red, while he sucks your juices off his glistening fingers like a man starved for days.
His animalistic gaze bores into where you and Declan connect. You can imagine how obscene it is. Declan's sticky balls thwap immorally against your ass. Sticky sounds bounce off the walls as he draws more slick from your core, staining the base of his cock in a creamy ring.
Rupert's eyes flit to yours. You silently mouth his name, playing with the man who's used the women of Rutshire like a kid with infinite toys. The subtle action pushes the posh man over the edge.
Biting his knuckles, Rupert spills over his other set with a ragged string of grunts. The image sets off a chain reaction. You follow suit, crying as you come around Declan's cock, and dragging your other half with you. Declan's thick brows furrow, groaning his ecstasy as he fills you with ropes of white.
The three of you gradually come down from the hedonistic scene. Your hearts beat to their natural rhythm as the birds outside sing a dusk setting song.
"T'was lovely to meet you, Angel," Rupert flirts, cleaning his cock with a handkerchief before tucking himself into his trousers. "Hope to see you again real soon."
"Fuck off, Rupert," Declan quips, jutting his chin toward the door.
Rupert sends you a wink before rounding the couch and exits with the fattest smile you've ever seen.
Declan mumbles under his breath and curls his arms around you. He tucks your head under his chin, letting you unwind comfortably before the crackling fire.
"Was that okay, Swee'heart?" Declan's asks with softened eyes.
With a satisfied sigh, you snuggle deeper into his hold, seeking the warmth and protective embrace he can only give. "More than."

"Where the hell is Declan!" You burst through the doors of the O'Hara household, loud and furious. You didn't buy the "He’s sick" claim for a moment, no matter how often Baddingham kept spewing the lie out of his mouth. And when you questioned his truthfulness, he sent you down the hall to Vereker's office, alerting you that you would no longer be Declan’s assistant.
But you'd pull every last strand of hair from your head if you had to spend another second working for that asshole. And when that's gone, you'd start on your legs and then your arms, and perhaps a few eyelashes too. You ignored Tony's shouts as you left the office building searching for your true boss.
Which led you speeding through town, barreling through the countryside until you arrived at Declan’s grand estate. You banged on the door and when you were met with silence, your hands wrapped around the handle, pleasantly surprised when the door opened wide.
Without hesitation, you stride through the foyer and march up the staircase. The long corridor witnessed you shout his name, scanning every room until you find his office. The doors cracked open which obviously means he’s welcoming you right in.
"Declan! I swear to–" but his chair sits empty. A slew of papers and empty liquor bottles covered the surface. You squint your eyes in pure annoyance. If he's the reason you spend the rest of your week drowning out Verekers moans by fiddling your ears and banging your head against the desk, then he's in for it.
You sigh heavily as you turn around, heading for your next best guess. You envisioned him sneaking out drunkenly to a pub. Probably annoying the hell out of the bartenders because after his third drink, the man can’t shut the hell up. Or perhaps he's thrown himself into the woods to get eaten by wolves. You knew Declan, and when he hit rock bottom he crashed hard.
"That little shite doesn't know a goddamn thing."
The slurred words of Declan O'Hara ring through your ears. Like a siren call, you follow. He curses a fit of words, not once taking a breather. You follow the crude sounds until you reach another door. You don't bother knocking, he's far past the courtesy.
"Found me," he slurs.
"Oh, for fucks sake, Declan!" You shield your eyes from the obscene view. He sits in a bathtub, legs sprawled open with a cigarette hanging loosely from his lips. A bottle of beer is held tightly in his grasp and he doesn't seem to have any plans to let go of it.
"I didn't tell you to come in here" he grumbles. "Heard yer stomps from a mile away."
"Well, I was worried. And also pissed you left me with that blonde-haired devil. He fucks like a rabbit and not in a good way. Wouldn't be surprised if he catches a damn itch."
Declan scoffs. "He’s already infested."
Your hands remain shielding your vision, leaving you blind to the way he stares off into space, taking the final swig of his drink and muttering beneath his breath.
"Just come back please." You sigh.
The sound of glass clanking and rolling to the ground echoed around the bathroom. You jump from the sudden noise, tightening your hand around your vision. He rolls his eyes while delivering a mocking laugh.
"Hand me another bottle o'er there and I'll consider."
You stand firmly, scowling at his impossible behavior.
“Standin’ there won’t help, darlin’. Don’t know why you’re tryin’.” He exhales a cloud of smoke, the scent wafting towards your nose and meshing with the woodland scent of his bath soap.
“Just tell me where to walk” you quip.
Declan’s eyes dart towards you, his lips curling into an amused grin. “Y'might need to be able to see for that.”
You shake your head in defiance, “Just tell me where to walk.”
He’s no longer interested in the shitty beer he kept hidden in the bathroom. Instead, he focuses on how easily you fall into line for him.
"Go to the right."
You follow his command, stepping to the right without hesitation.
"Now go straight about five steps."  You don’t question his directions, placing your full trust in his judgment.
"Yes, Sir." You do as you’re told, taking five small steps and pausing. "Now what?"
He groans softly at your admission, his length stirring as you patiently wait for his next directions. Your tone unleashed fantasies he kept hidden within the depths of his mind and if you stayed for another moment, he’d happily release every last one.
There's a moment of silence before he continues. "To the right once more and you've got it."
You blindly reach your hands outward but defeatedly grasp open air. "Declan? I don't feel it."
"Bend down a little, it's on the second shelf."
His eyes widen as the hilt of your skirt rises against your ass, revealing the lace garters decorating your legs. He takes a long drag, watching shamelessly as you shimmy to adjust the length, struggling to do so single-handedly.
Finally, you touch the slim neck of a glass bottle. "Oh! I found it!" You giggle excitedly.
Declan smirks. "Atta girl."
If you weren't too busy shielding your eyes from the outside world, you'd notice the way Declan scans your body. His gaze dropped from your face to the white blouse you wore. Half the buttons were undone but it wasn't like you could check. You stood in front of him like a temptress, all precaution flying out the window the moment he heard your soft laughter.
"Now how do I get back?"
He laughs breathlessly. "Same way you came."
"Uh okay." You attempt to retrace your steps. Mouthing his previous directions aloud until you're semi-close to the door.
"Now walk forward a few steps" he ushers.
You nod, walking carefully toward the sound of his voice. His eyebrows furrow with mischief as you approach, your steps growing wider and far too close to the edge.
The next sequence of events occurs in a blur. You tumble forward and the water splashes over the edge, coating the tiled floors as you fall into the bathtub. You squeal as the hot water warms your body, soaking your attire and revealing everything underneath to Declan's eyes.
"Asshole!" You shout. You attempt to stand only to wind up slipping and falling right back into place.
He presses his cigarette butt against an ashtray before grabbing your arms. He steadies you, dragging your body up against his with ease.
"And that's why we don't walk with our eyes closed."
"You didn't tell me to stop!" You're so enthralled in fury and he can't help but to revel in it. He can only smile as you curse, attempting once again to stand before accepting defeat.
"How much goddamn soap did you put in here!" You shake your head with bitter laughter. You lay back against him, your heart racing out of your chest as his arms find themselves on your waist.
An evident shift in mood affects the room. "Why won't you look at me?" He questions.
"Simple. You piss me off."
You shut your eyes even tighter, ignoring the way his length ghosted across your stomach. His chest hair was surprisingly soft, pillowing your head and causing your heart to beat a skip faster. You stay quiet as his hands drift away from your waist and towards your thighs, forcefully gripping them and dragging you closer to him.
"Then why'd you come here?" He retorts rather quickly.
"Tony. I'm sick of being ordered around by him."
Declan hums. "You didn't seem to have a problem taking orders a few seconds ago."
You whimper as he palms your ass, kneading it roughly. You place your hands against his chest, fighting the desire to give in.
“That’s different. I was helping a friend.”
His lips broaden into a smile at your select choice of word. “Friend?”
“Yes, Delcan. You’re my friend but clearly you could care less.”
He doesn't miss the bitterness in your tone. There was a hint of resentment that clouded your features. He saw it in the way you turned your head further away, limbs tensing against his touch.
"I care," he reassures.
"But you left me.” The vulnerable words tumble from your lips before you can stop them. “You caused complete chaos and rightfully so but you left without a word. I know I’m your assistant but I care about you, Declan. You always said we’d get out of that shitshow together and you left me.”
Truthfully, you grew attached to him, infatuated with a man whose brain met the greatness of his kindness. An unrequited love. You knew it was impossible for him to feel the same way but witnessing him leave without a word solidified your fears. You were merely his subordinate and nothing more.
Your disappointment reaches your tear ducts and unshed tears of despair begin to descend your cheeks. Declan doesn't hesitate to wipe them away, his thumbs swiping across your skin in comforting movements.
"There ya' go, darlin'. It's okay to be upset. I deserve it."
“Did you forget about me that quickly? You hadn’t even called.” You burrow your head into the crevice of his arm, still unwilling to face him.
Forget?
How could he forget when thoughts of you ran rampant in his head? He wasn’t one to take orders but anything you said rendered him defenseless. Despite being your superior it often felt as if he was learning from you. He’d do whatever you wanted without question.
He spent nights thinking of you, his hand wrapped around his aching size as he dared not to wake his sleeping wife. Muffling his moans, he thought of how you’d look in her place. How he’d tilt your head backward, kissing you languidly while pushing past your folds. He envisioned your sensual tone calling out his name, begging him to push harder, deeper, to which he’d obey. Following your every command because that’s all he craved to do. Gritting his teeth, clenching the satin sheets until he dreamt of filling you with his seed, no longer caring if his wife heard him murmur your name.
“I could never forget you.” There’s a sincerity in his tone that shutters your core.
Slowly you break free from your darkened corner, at last meeting his heated gaze. He stares at you with pure desire, eyes dark and glimmering with something farther than lust.
You take in his naked form, staring at the dark hair that danced down his stomach and covered his shaft. Water dripped from his hair, his typically sleek curls jostled and free. You couldn’t see what lay beneath his waist but you felt his heaviness against your stomach, throbbing with unmet need.
“You’re drunk” you rebuttal weakly.
He shakes his head, “M’perfectly fine.” He sobered the moment reality hit that your body was laid against his.
He waits for your next argument but it never arrives. The two of you stare in silence, subdued desires coming to light. Slowly you begin unbuttoning your blouse, stripping the wet cloth from your shoulders and tossing it onto the mat. Declan assists you wordlessly, his hands pulling down your skirt before reaching to unclasp your bra. He takes in this moment. Kissing your skin every time another item is removed until you sit exposed before him.
His hand caresses the back of your head, drawing you close enough for your lips to graze. “Tell me to stop and I will.”
You nod, stopping the furthest thing from your mind.
“I need words, darlin’. Are you okay with this?”
“I’m okay, Declan. Just…” Your brain turns into a foggy haze as you search for what you’d like to say. He grips your jaw, tilting it upwards to better meet your gaze.
“Just, what? It’s okay. I won’t be mad.”
You can’t seem to formulate the words to describe how you felt. His touch overwhelmed you in the best way possible. The fresh scent of his skin drowned your senses and feeling your most intimate parts glide against him took the entirety of your focus.
“I just need you.” Your soft tone stirs something animalistic inside of him. Without another wasted second his lips meet yours. It starts impulsively rabid, his tongue wrapping around yours while he pushes your head further into him. He groans into your mouth, eyelids fluttering closed as he gets lost in your taste. But then he goes slower, savoring the way your hips begin to grind into him as your kiss grows messy. Saliva drips from the corners of your mouth until he drags his lips back over them.
Calling him desperate would be an understatement.
He pulls away regretfully, brushing the pads of his thumbs over your lips to clean his mess. You whine from the loss of connection, lips still parted and demanding him for more.
Declan chuckles, granting your wish and delving into your mouth once more. Your hips rock against him, willing his length to rise. The water sloshes back and forth as you grind against his stomach, watching the rapid rise and fall of his chest eagerly. Your hand rests against his unshorn chest hair, envisioning gliding your wet cunt over it until he’s drenched.
“That’s it, darlin’. Use me.” He moans into your mouth, uncaring of how loud he was being.
“Hurts” you whimper. He pulls away once again, his hands finding yours beneath the water and directing them towards your heat. You jolt as his fingers graze your aching clit, “This what hurts, baby?” he hums. You nod, directing his fingers toward your puffy folds.
He tsks, “I think that’s your job, darlin’.” You hadn’t quite understood what he meant until you felt him direct your fingers inside yourself. Your face contorts with pleasure as you shove them inside without question, using his chest as leverage while you ride. Declan watches you carefully before sliding his fingers back against your clit, pressing it roughly.
“Your pretty button’s so swollen. Just wanna make it feel better.” He rubs small circles around your clit, slapping it roughly when he notices your eyes rolling backward.
“Look at me when you play with your pretty cunt.” Declan ignores the way his cock jolts against his skin, desperate to be buried inside of you. All he cared about at this moment was your pleasure, physically reassuring your place in his world.
“M’gonna cum” you whine.
You say his name continuously as he continues to toy with your clit, tugging and slapping it until you couldn’t take it anymore.
Declan wraps you in a confining hug as you shake against him, his hands rubbing the back of your neck as he talks you through your orgasm. You nuzzle into his chest, allowing his huge frame to provide you comfort. “D-” Your tongue teeters on the line of murmuring a word you knew you mustn’t say.
“Did so good for me, baby. That’s it, I’ve got you. Just ride it out, I’m right here for you.”
But your mind slips and the word comes flowing from your lips. “Daddy.” It was hardly above a whisper but Declan caught it nonetheless. He watches you curl into him, a level of trust in your actions that he knew he had to maintain forever.
You’re shaken from your haze as Declan taps his length against your cunt, a newfound look of pure hunger darkening his gaze.
Pre-cum drips down his length, the water washing away any evidence of his sin. He rubs his reddened tip against your folds, groaning loudly as you spread your thighs wider for him.
He drags you onto his cock, holding you upwards as you take his size. Your moans blend into one continuous sound as he fills you, stretching your walls as you claw at his back.
“C’mon baby, know you can take more, can you do that for me?”
You shiver as you allow yourself to bottom out against him, muffling a scream as he breaches you entirely. His eyes roll as he embraces your warmth, his arousal growing heavier. He stares down at where the two of you connect, your walls choking his cock and leaking downwards.
A wave of adoration washes over him before it becomes tainted with angry realizations. You sat beneath him, his perfect match. Someone who balanced him, calmed him, put up with him. And yet, he’s had to push his feelings away in the name of not causing a stir.
He’s angry that he’s trapped in a loveless marriage riddled with infidelity and fueled by his income. Trapped in this goddamn house that he could care less about. Angry that Tony dangled his career in front of him like a chew toy. And most of all he was livid that you weren’t the one sleeping next to him every night.
Declan shoves his hips forward, bouncing you on his length. “So fucking tight” he grits through his teeth. You clench around him, your wetness welcoming him even further. The noises were obscene, his heavy balls slapping against your ass as your pussy squelched. He revels in it, fingers finding your sweet lips to shove them in between.
You witness the furrow in his eyebrows and undoubtable frustration. You meet his gaze, lips wrapping around his fingers and sucking. You take them deeper until they’re practically shoved down your throat.
“Should’ve known you’d be a fucking slut. You like this, don’t you? Bet you wish you were choking down my cock instead.”
“Uh huh,” you whine. You’d thought about it all the time. When he’d arrive to work angry, sitting at his desk with a pout. How you’d wanted to sink to your knees beneath him, hiding beneath his desk while you slid him down your throat. Muffling your gags as he answered the phone while stroking your hair.
He hooks into your cheek, widening your mouth so he can spit into it. He taps you, commanding you to swallow to which you happily oblige. You shake against him, tits bouncing freely. He grips onto them, slapping your sensitive nipples until they pebble in his fingertips.
“How does it feel, baby? You like being stretched out? Can barely keep your eyes open, can you?”
Pressing against your womb, Declan feels his length shatter your walls. He watches you fall into his broad chest, clutching onto his back while he holds you closely.
“Feels so good, daddy.” You whimper.
“That’s right, baby. Daddy’s got you. Gonna be my little cock whore amn’t ya? Surprised your little cunt could even fit. Just shows you're perfect for me, hm?”
“M’hm, perfect” you repeat.
He knows you're close, he feels it when your nails dig into his skin. Surely leaving marks that he wouldn’t feel the need to hide.
“You need to cum, don’t you, baby? It’s okay, nobody’s here. Just us. Let go for me, let Daddy feel you.” His pace becomes slower, pounding into you with deep thrusts.
Your vision blurs as you reach your high, shouting Declan’s name as you gush around him. He follows suit, your pulsating walls unleashing his heavy orgasm. He doesn’t relent as he shoots his load into you, locking you down as he fills you with his seed. He could care less about the consequences, nothing else mattered at the moment.
He captures your lips in his, taking short breaths to whisper how good you were for him. He suckles on your collarbone, leaving definite bruises to match the claw marks you undoubtedly left on his back.
“Let’s get you dry” he murmurs.
You nod, too tired to reply or move. Declan slides out of you, saddened by the loss of connection. He carries you out of the bathtub, his spend dripping from your pussy and leaking onto his leg. He clenches his jaw, fighting the desire to fuck it right back into you.
He wraps you in a towel, drying your skin before taking you into his bedroom. He sits you on the bed while he scourers his closet for something you could wear. Landing on an old college shirt that he refused to throw out.
As he slides it onto your body, he presses his lips against your forehead. A million words silently transcribe between the two of you. He’s unsure of what the future holds but he’s certain that you belong in his.

Declan O'Hara x f!reader
(little mention of Tag x Rupert)
~1k words, no real warnings - the 'c' word is used once.
While I wait for my man Jack Lowden to return from war (filming season 6 of Slow Horses), I thought I'd dip my little toe into a very short Declan O'Hara one-shot 😬
If you're reading The Escape Artist, fear not, the final TWO chapters are coming this week! Yes, of course I do have other prompts to get on with, but I was in spin class last night, and every time my instructor shouted, "Ride, ride, ride" all I saw was Declan 😅 The moustache would make a wonderful handle as well 🤭
Tumblr media
Another bead of sweat drips from your forehead onto the towel.
“Ride, ride, ride, ride, don't stop ladies,” the instructor, an Adonis of a man, coaches you through the pumping music. Next to you, Taggie blows a stray curl out of her face.
“This is torture,” she hisses through gritted teeth.
She isn't wrong.
The newly installed ‘Bicycle Hub’ has raised eyebrows at the local leisure centre, with few expected to actually attend.
The Hub overlooks the squash courts, not that you'd know.
They were so filled with cigarette smoke you could hardly see a thing at all.
From the front row of bikes, you had a prime view looking down.
Usually older gentlemen with portly stomachs and red wine noses who were one play away from a heart attack.
“Oh look, it's daddy.” Taggie peers down. “And Rupert.”
Even through the glowing pink caused by the exercise class you can see her blush.
The two men look up and catch you watching them.
A real shame you couldn't lip read.
Not that they'd be saying anything about Tag, Rupert wouldn't dare in front of Declan.
You were fair game though.
Taggie waves but you don't dare break your rhythm on the bike for fear you'd fall right off.
“Concentrate, ladies,” Adonis warns. “Left, right, left, left, right, right. Stay with the beat, ride, ride, ride.”
You tear your eyes away from the squash court and look back at your bike, regretting it instantly.
“My legs are killing me,” you mutter, feeling your thighs burn.
You go back to looking at the squash game Declan and Rupert are playing, it looks more like they're trying to hit each other with the ball rather than play to the rules.
Each of them roaring with laughter whenever they make contact.
“I'm sure that's not how you're supposed to play,” Taggie grumbles.
“Could be worse, they could be just hitting each other with the racket,” you suggest.
Your breath comes in short gasps now, your stamina rapidly declining.
The rhythmic sounds of the squash ball combine with the squeak of running shoes, the beat of the music, and the hum of the fixed wheels of the bike.
A cacophony of sounds.
You find yourself watching their game more intently, it powers you through the changes in resistance on the bike.
You tilt your head to brush your earlobe against your shoulder and catch another drip of sweat.
As you do so, another works its way down the side of your neck and down into your cleavage.
“And down, catch your breath. Next, we're going to run,” Adonis tells the class.
You let your legs slow down a little and take the opportunity to run the towel over your face and take a long drink of water.
Your chest heaves.
As you put your water bottle back on the machine, you automatically look again at the squash court, this time catching Declan watching you.
You notice the quick lift of his eyebrow as he stares.
He licks his lips slowly, deliberately, and then smiles.
“OK ladies, stand up -”
“On the bike?”
“Yes, madame, it's time to run.”
“I don't understand, I'll fall off!” You think it's Valerie Jones who's protesting, but you've yet to look away from Declan.
Holding his gaze, you do as Adonis asks and you stand up, straightening your legs on the pedals.
Even from this distance you can tell where he's looking.
Your tight lycra crop top pulls your breasts together and his eyes are drawn like a magnet.
When you lean forward on the bike, he wipes his hand over his mouth.
The next track starts building in momentum and so do you, each rotation of the wheels making you bounce a little more vigorously.
Neither of you has looked away yet, goodness knows where Rupert has gone.
Taggie is mercifully distracted, a tight frown of concentration on her face.
There's a wicked glint in Declan's eye and you tilt your head to the side, a silent question.
Whatever he's about to do in response, he doesn't.
Rupert is back, distracting him, talking to him.
He looks away at last, but you can tell it's under duress.
“Thank you ladies, great class for today!” Adonis is off the bike and leading his own round of applause.
You roll your eyes at Taggie and grimace.
“He's single! So I've heard,” she tells you with a giggle.
“No thanks, his biceps are huge! He'd suffocate me!”
You leave the class very much in need of a shower and as you make your way down to the changing rooms, you pass the squash courts.
Taggie's looking out for Rupert, you can tell.
Desperate for a moment alone with him.
You spot him first, by the water fountain, and nudge her in his direction.
His face lights up at the sight of her.
"Looks like you ladies have been getting all hot and sweaty,” he grins slyly.
You leave them to talk, and open the glass door to the court.
Taggie and Rupert are in full view of most of the leisure centre so he only has his words to charm with.
Inside the court, Declan has been watching you through the glass.
“Water?” You offer, holding out your bottle.
“Prefer whiskey,” he grins.
“So do I.”
“I'd also prefer an exercise that'll leave us both breathless," he says quietly.
There's a line you're about to cross but neither of you seems to care.
“So do I.” You repeat equally quietly.
“Sure I can find a much more comfortable seat for you as well.”
The lilt of his accent runs over your body.
He looks through the door but Taggie and Rupert are out of sight, for once, he doesn't seem to care.
He takes a step towards you, as if he's about to whisper in your ear.
Instead, he drags his tongue from your throat to your earlobe.
“You taste delicious.”
Your power of speech is non-existent.
Your hands shake as the adrenaline from the class and from his proximity mingle together.
He kisses your temple, your hairline damp with sweat.
“I think it's time to put a stop to this little game, don't you?” he murmurs.
You can only nod as your body trembles and your cunt clenches.
And then you hear Rupert in the atrium outside.
Declan takes a measured step away from you as Taggie arrives, though neither of you can stop staring.
“Ugh, let's go, I feel disgusting,” she pulls a face. Rupert clearly thinks quite the opposite.
“Yes, let's. Enjoy your game, gentlemen.” You smile brightly.
“I certainly am,” Declan responds, the low rumble of his laughter following you from the court.
You can still feel the heat of his stare as you pile into the car to leave.
You can still feel the weight of his body on yours as you climb into bed that night.

Declan O’hara x Reader

Warnings: 18+, angst, pet names, kissing, cheating(?), drinking, fingering, praise kink, sex
w/c: 2.7k
also on AO3
You had grown used to the smell of the man who seemed to occupy every moment of your waking life. Cigarettes and whiskey, permeate the air, seeping into the wool of his sweaters, and his suits. You knew when the bite of whiskey was stronger, things usually were worse with his wife. He knew that when he’d been researching a critical guest, a reek of tobacco would sit in the natural fibers of his clothes, sometimes even staining the sleeves. The antiseptic of his particular brand of aftershave even became familiar. Declan was a passionate man, and the rhythm of his artistic temperament was something you grew to dance easily around. And for that he was always generous and kind, working as his secretary was rewarding, if there was a world where you had no bills to pay, you may have worked for his praise alone.
It made sense when you followed him when he left Corinium. Knowing full well work might be hard to find again if he should fail. Then when Maud stepped out, following after where her own heart took her, you braced for the fallout. Knowing the coming days would be hard on a man who’d you’d had such a growing affection for. You tried to dismiss it as a schoolgirl crush, but there was so much more affection for this mentor, more than any fleeting feelings for past teachers.
You returned to the Priory late one night, a thick folder in hand, knowing he would be up. His office was the only illumination left in the vast residence. That and the porch light he always left on. You had wondered a few times if it was for you but never grew the courage to ask. Instead of knocking and waking the dog or Taggie, you quietly let yourself in the front door and made your way to his office. Your hand was raised to knock but the shattering of glass you heard caused you to abruptly stop, and pause. You could hear Declan on the other side of the door, a gentle, lightly intoxicated ‘Fuck’, leaving his lips before you pushed inside, and shut the door behind you.
A whiskey glass was in pieces on the floor, and the bottle on his desk was, rather thankfully, only half gone. He sat at his desk brushing the glass aside with his slippered foot. Without a word you approached, setting the folder on his desk. As you turned to move for the dustpan, Declan reached for your wrist. His firm holds causing you to turn and face him.
You’d been polite enough several times before not to look when he’d worked himself up like this. The flannel he wore was loose and had a few more undone buttons than was fit for the company. His undereyes were darkened with a lack of sleep. But he fixed you with the same kind, sad gaze he almost always did, despite his stupor.
“Why?” he asked you simply. His voice was a deep grunt.
“Why, what, Mr. O’hara?” you replied, your brow knitting together with confusion.
“Don’t call me that, you never call me that,” he grumbled softly, uncomfortable with your choice for propriety at this time. “Why bother with me? I’m sure you’d be better paid, better suited, with a better man. Maybe any other man. Probably in London,” he drawled, clarifying his question.
“I don’t want another man, Declan,” you sighed at him, and his hold on your wrist relaxed slightly. Seeming to cling to you for comfort loosely. You were telling the truth, your last boyfriend had broken up with you due to your dedication to the job. You’d hardly sought out another. You had even less ambition to abandon him for another boss.
“You’d be the only one,” he gruffed, ignoring the subtext of your words, or missing them, you couldn’t quite tell. “I got a phone call from London,” he offered. The frown you replied with letting him leave it at that. You knew it was Maud already. Knew it was attention from another man. As the silence lingered he sniffed and looked pointedly away toward the darkened windows that acted more like mirrors in the dim glow of the desk lamp in the room. His hand dropped limply from your wrist, falling to his knee. If you’d looked out the window, you’d notice he was looking at your reflection, standing close to his.
A gentle sigh left you as you lifted your hand. You hesitated a moment before placing it gently on one of his broad shoulders. “You’re good to me Declan. You deserve the loyalty you inspire,” you attempted to soothe him softly. Your words had struck an off chord, causing his jaw to clench and a disgruntled frown to form under his mustache.
“Loyalty,” he refrained, looking back at you with simmering anger. The kind you’d seen directed mostly at Rupert or Tony. Never you, the look alone made your skin crawl, your hand slip off his shoulder as you swallowed back any pride you had left.
“I’ll just leave that here, and come back another time…” you attempted hurriedly, all while Declan rose to his feet. Before you could scurry out, or even take a step back he’d let his fingers comb into your hair, grasping you perhaps not so gently by the nape of your neck and tilting your head to look up at him. Your eyes met his gaze that looked much more sober than you’d expected, and still far too intense.
“Have you thought how far you’d go for me? What you’d endure?” he questioned, hard, unreadable.
“I’d do anything you needed me to, Declan.” you attempted confidence, but it came out in more of a whisper. The answer seemed to make him let out a soft laugh, or perhaps a scoff.
“So I’d have to need it then?” he replied, clearly rhetorically. He let out a soft sigh, gently shaking his head from side to side.
“Anything you wanted, Declan,” you admitted softly in return, eyes wide and earnest. You felt the fingers in your hair tense, a soft pulling at the root that pulled a gasp from you.
“Shouldn’t say things like that,” he warned you softly, the anger in his gaze seeming to melt into something else. “Y’don't mean it,” he grumbled, mostly to himself before you attempted to shake your head in disagreement, leading to effectively only tugging your hair and loosening his grip.
“Of course I do,” you attempted, but further protests were silenced by Declan leaning in and pressing his lips to yours. Suddenly your senses were flooded with the taste of the scent you’d memorized. The taste of whiskey and tobacco on your tongue, mixed with the sharpness of the menthol in his aftershave. It made your head spin and give in to him. A culmination of thoughts you’d let wander far too many times. When your thoughts came back, your hands planted firmly on his chest, the coarse feeling of his flannel on your palms as you pushed him back.
“You’re drunk,” you offer softly, attempting to give him an out and let him decide it was a mistake he could forget.
“I’m not,” he replies bluntly, confirming what you knew, but letting you get away if you wanted. “Sorry, love,” he mumbled, beginning to part from you, detangling himself from his hold on you before you grasped his collar and pulled his lips back to yours.
When it hits him that you’re just as eager to kiss him back, he’s like a man possessed. Hands move to your waist as he holds you close for a moment, lips searching yours hungrily. The prickle of his unshaven cheeks chafed your skin slightly. He groans into your mouth before lifting you up and setting you to sit on the edge of his desk, using a forearm to shove more papers out of the way.
His haste causes him to break the kiss, and for a soft giggle to leave you. It’s clear he’s desperate for you. Once he’s satisfied, he gently cups your face, savoring looking down at you, his pupils blown wide with lust as you look up to him, lips slightly agape.
“Need you…” he admits softly, broken and wanting. When you nod it’s enough for him to rush to begin helping you undress.
“Take me then, Declan.” you encourage him as you slip your trousers down your legs, your panties along with them as you sit bare now on his desk’s surface. Your words elicit a feral growl from his throat as he nudges between your knees, spreading them slightly. A soft hiss when he gets sight of your slick petals.
“Pretty girl.” he coos the praise, aimed more at your cunt, than you, causing a blush to flood your cheeks. He traces his index and middle fingers on your lips until you open your mouth further, and then he wets them on your tongue. All until you wrap your lips around his thick fingers and suckle around him. Your eyes meet as he lets out a soft groan. “‘another time,” he grunts, a promise at your suckling before pulling his fingers free from your mouth and tracing them down your body to play along your slit. The heat and texture of his calloused fingers causes you to squirm involuntarily under his touch.
“It’s alright darlin’, just need to be good to you first,” he rumbles soft praise to you before stepping closer. You’re engulfed by him as he presses a soft kiss to the top of your head, fingers slipping through your folds to gently prod at your entrance, sinking slowly in. A soft growl leaves him when you give in and shift so your sensitive pearl brushes against his palm. Needy gasps leaving you as you press yourself harder against him, seeking the friction as he eases his fingers into you, filling you gently, starting to curve and work them into you in earnest.
“Always good to me, Declan,” you whined back, high and needy before you pressed your face into the crook of his neck, taking deep breaths, the scent of him filling your lungs and making your head swim. “So tight…” he grumbled in reply, continuing to lavish you with praise as your walls fluttered around his fingers, adjusting to their thickness. Your hands on his chest grasp onto him greedily, pawing at his shirt as you whimper into the meat of his shoulder.
“God, please Declan,” you began to beg. At first, he only answered with a groan of his own, fingers picking up their pace as his palm dragged against your clit.
“I know, I know, but I gotta get you ready first,” he replied, pleading with you. It seemed to go on deaf ears though, your nails digging into the cotton of his shirt and barely dulling the sharpness as you whimpered little aimless pleas as he worked you up until you began to sob out in pleasure. Noises of release were only muffled by his bulk as he used his free hand to gently stroke your hair. Your hips bucked against the hand buried into you. All the while he soothed you through your climax.
As you came down from your high Declan slowly pulled his fingers from your slick walls. He eased you to sit up as he put them to his lips, suckling your slick clean off them. Leaving you to gaze over his face, dazed with lust and the culmination of your tamped-down affections, your hand that’s been clawing at his chest drifted down to reach for the bulge tenting his trousers. Grasping at his hardened length, and getting a clear idea of the size of him, big, but more so thick. His insistence on warming you up is more than warranted.
A grunt left him as his hand fell from his mouth at your groping. “Not gonna be able to stay sweet about it if you keep that up,” he warned, thick and gravely. Hands come to rest at your hips and scoot you to the very edge of the desk.
“Don’t want you to,” you breathed, head still spinning. “-want you to take what you need,” you reminded him, kneading once more over his bulge as you sat up slightly to press kisses to his stubble-covered jaw.
You think you heard him curse under his breath at your continued pleading with him. It seemed your encouragement was enough to cause him to snap, unzipping his trousers and relieving his hard length from his boxers. Taking your chance your hand slid down his chest, popping the snaps of his flannel shirt to leave his broad, hairy chest bare to you, the garment loosely hanging over his shoulders.
He grasped the base of his cock, reddened and already leaking with evidence of arousal. Lining himself up with your entrance he let out a soft hiss as he bullied his way into your tight heat, your inner walls fluttering as they struggled to content with his size. Even considering his attempt to warm you up. By the time he bottomed out you’d been left breathless, your arms moving rest at the back of his neck as you held him close. Once fully seated he eased you back further onto his desk, taking each of your thighs in hand and pressing them back as you were laid open and exposed to him. It gave you just enough time for you to be able to catch a few shallow breaths before he took you in earnest.
He draws his hips back just to snap them back into yours, filling you somehow deeper than before. It rips a sharp gasp from you, a desperate whine breaking from your throat, you’d know if you weren’t so impossibly wet the stretch would sting.
“Bein’ such a good girl for me,” he praised, “Takin’ it so well, darling,” he continued between grunts, building up a brutal pace as his hips pumped into yours, any resolve to hold back or be gentle melting as he had you effectively pinned down on his desk.
You laid back, over the piles of papers and envelopes, ignoring them entirely as he leaned forward, pinning his hands down on the surface, and trapping you with your legs draped over his forearms. When you met his gaze you could barely see the warm brown of his eyes, too filled with lust as he dragged his length through you with every thrust. The whimpering moans that left you only spurring him on, every few pleasured whimpers being answered with a throaty grunt of his own pleasure, becoming more beast than man.
“I’m gonna,” you warned softly between wrecked-sounding moans, your voice broke and crackling as you neared another peak. “Don’t stop,” you begged, a broken whimper as you locked your arms around his neck.
Holding Declan close was hardly a struggle; he tucked his face into the crook of your neck and let out a growl into your skin as your walls fluttered around his length. Your thighs shivering with the intensity of the pleasure that overtook you, you were left gasping out, eyes rolling back as the searing heat overwhelmed you. Declan’s thrusts stuttered as you clamped down hard around him, his pace faltering as he hit his own peak. He attempted to lean back and pull out, but with you clamping down around him, and holding his face into your chest he spilled his release into your eager cunt.
“Shit,” he grunted in a mix of satisfaction and frustration under his breath, finally snapping from your daze enough to let go of your hold. He took his chance to lean back up, let you lower your legs, and pull out. His spend dripping out of your twitching walls in his wake.
“It’s okay,” you only offered softly in reply. “L-like it, even,” you admitted before using your forearms to prop yourself up slightly, and watch the maddened glint in Declan’s eyes only be fueled by your admission. A soft sigh left him before he leaned in and cupped your face, his thumbs running over your cheeks.
“Perfect, darlin’,” he practically cooed before pressing a soft kiss to your lips.

cw/ smut (handjob), cheating, age gap
𓂃 𓈒 ❀ declan o'hara is just a touch starved man. of course we've seen him in the show having sex with maud but it's him touching her every time. so there's no way he can stop himself when you grip his tie and tug him toward you, pulling him between your thighs as you perched on the edge of his desk.
declan's hand closed firmly around your wrist as your fingers began to undo the knot of his tie. for god's sake, he was a married man and twice your age. he should step back, say something but he didn't and your eyes were still locked. none of you said a word. his jaw tightened, his lips parted as if to speak, but no words came, his chest rose and fell with heavy breaths. he let go of the grip on your wrist and your thighs closed around his body, squeezing him closer to you. declan's face tightened with frustration, anger flickering in his eyes. you knew exactly what you were doing and you were doing it because you knew he wouldn't be able to tell you to stop.
your fingers slipped under the loosened tie, slowly working at the buttons of his shirt. every time you undid another button, a reason flashed through declan’s mind as to why he shouldn’t be allowing this. taggie. caitlin. patrick. maud. you could be his daughter. he could lose his job. your fingers worked the last button free, the fabric parting and revealing his body. his breath hitched once your palms made contact with the hot hairy skin of his chest and in that moment you realized how touch-deprived he truly was.
declan was gentleman, always keeping his intimate life with maud very private. when the men in the office made comments about their wives, joking and definitely oversharing, declan would simply laugh along, only adding that his intimate life with maud was more than satisfying. but was that true? by the way he was melting under your touch you'd swear that something was missing, something that declan was craving and that his wife wasn't giving to him.
your hands started traveling down his body and declan took a deep breath and closed his eyes. he felt shame for letting himself go this far, not only for being in this position but also with someone his daughter's age. you reached the waistband of his pants. his eyes were now fixed on your hands as you unbuckled his belt and unzipped his pants. your eyes were still locked on his face. so handsome, so manly, effortlessly charming declan o'hara.
since your first day working with declan as his assistant, you knew that you'd have him. the subtle glances across the office, the way you moved closer than necessary when handing him documents, the way your fingers worked on his shoulders after an argument with tony... you played carefully, letting the tension between you both build slowly, making him crave more without even realizing it.
and then declan introduced you to maud and taggie at that stupid christmas party, clearly hoping that it would put an end to this thing going on between you and him, that you'd realize that he was a married man with boundaries that shouldn’t be crossed. but if anything, it only made the situation worse. there was nothing you hated more than something you couldn't have. it wasn’t just about declan anymore, it was about the challenge, the forbidden territory. seeing him standing there, playing the role of devoted husband and loving father, only made you want him more.
maud was pretentious, an attention seeker who wanted the admiration of any man other than her husband. her gaze never stayed on declan for long, always on the lookout for someone else to give her the validation she needed. you'd be more than happy to take her place. you didn’t need attention from any man, just his.
taggie, on the other hand, was innocent, too naive to understand your intentions with declan. he always said that you two would be good friends, but honestly, friendship was the last thing on your mind. you weren’t interested in bonding with her when your true desire was focused on getting closer to her dad.
you licked you hand before slipping it into his underwear and he gasped when your fingers wrapped around him. your other hand grabbed his cheeks, squeezing his face and forcing him to look at you. it was not maud who was touching him, it was you. you wanted declan to remember it very well later when he got home and lay in bed next to her, when guilt consumed him in the quiet of the night, you wanted him to feel your touch every time he closed his eyes.
your hand moved up and down, painfully slow. his lips parted, his eyes focused on your mouth. declan leaned in, but as his lips were about to brush against yours, you dodged him, leaning back with a malicious smirk on your lips. he'd never been much of a tease himself so he expected the same from his partner but you, all you had been doing is teasing him since the day you met and for someone who thrived on control, it was equal parts frustrating and intoxicating.
declan huffed, trying to hold back all the sounds he wanted to let out. his jaw tightened, his hand gripping hard the edge of the desk. he let his forehead rest on your shoulder, your hand kept moving inside his underwear at the same slow pace. the last person in the corinium building left hours ago, it was just the two of you. you were supposed to be working on questions for his next interview. you told your mom you’d be home late, declan told maud and taggie the same.
you heard him grunt and curse against the skin on your neck, his hot breath sent shivers down your spine and you felt your tough-girl facade begin to crumble. you'd been so determined to make it seem like you were the one in control, like he was the one desperate for this to finally happen but the truth was that you needed him just as much. even more maybe.
declan started kissing your neck, your lips parted. his mustache tickled your skin, his mouth left wet kisses all over your neck. your legs wrapped around him tighter as one of his hands moved to hold your hips in place while his other one squeezed the flesh of your thigh, making you let out a soft whine. your free hand moved to the back of his head, fingers knotting them into the dark curls of his hair. declan gave you a trail of kisses from your neck up to the corner of your mouth, you had to bit down your lower lip and he had to stop a few times, pressing his lips together and closing his eyes shut as your hand inside his pants moved faster.
he stopped right before he reached your lips and you couldn’t help the frustration build inside you as you asked yourself why he didn't keep going. but then you remembered, you were the one who had dodged him. you had set that boundary, he thought that you didn’t want him to cross that line, even if it left him aching for more. and gosh, the fact that declan was willing to go as far as you'd be comfortable with made him even sexier, if possible.
with your hand on the back of his head, you guided his lips to yours. declan did not hesitate for a moment. he moaned into your mouth as he kissed you back and you swallowed each of his sounds. who would've thought that ruthless charismatic journalist declan o'hara was one to moan. those sweet sounds turned into heavy and uncontrollable breaths as his eyes closed shut and let out some curses through his gritted teeth. his hand on your thigh squeezed you harder and you were sure his fingers would leave marks on you.
declan came with a groan straight from his chest. you felt your hand wet as he rested his forehead on your shoulder, catching his breath. you smiled, satisfied, you finally had him where you wanted and you knew that now neither one of you could stop.
with a little jump, you got down from his desk. he was still flustered, cheeks red, a thin sweat glistened on his forehead and some of his curls had fallen loose. declan stood there with his shirt hanging open, his broad and hairy chest fully exposed to you. you had to press your thighs together in an attempt to ease what seeing him so vulnerable was making you feel. you rested your hands on his chest, for your own pleasure, and gave a quick kiss to his lips.
—see you tomorrow, declan.

Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want | Part 1. (Rivals Declan O'Hara x Reader 18+)
Tumblr media
masterlist (part 1,2,3,4) Warnings: Profanities, sexual tension, alcohol and cigarette use.
Author's note: I'm not exactly staying on top of the timeline of rivals, bare this in mind as you read. Of course with any self inserts, it's an AU with a bit of tweaking. No smut involved in this chapter, just fluff until I post more parts. AGE GAP (22!Reader). Thanks for reading.
━━━━━━☆━━━━━━
It was your first week at the Corinium. You were a fresh-faced journalist straight out of Washington State University who had accepted an internship at the independent commercial television station in the county of Rutshire, England. Far from home and comfort, you strived to be the best at what you were asked to do. The pay was good, and the idea of being in another continent where anything was possible kept your drive at an all-time high. You were practicing your decorum quietly to yourself at your desk, fiddling with your pen.
"Already going mad, are you?" Your co-worker and new friend Seb asks, grinning as he puts down his homework on your desk.
You laugh awkwardly, crossing your leg over the other as you lean back to look up at the ginger. "If I have to hear Tony Baddingham cuss out another person because Declan O'Hara is too stubborn to take his lead," You quip, closing your own folder of paperwork. "I think I'll start drinking more." You exasperate, recalling the sudden outburst from Tony's office a mere five minutes ago. Seeing Declan O'Hara riled up was never a great sign, but you couldn't help but run your eyes over his sculpted arms when he took off his blazer in frustration.
"I think you need to start drinking more in general, y/n. You're in England now. We all have a problem." Seb comments, half-sitting on your desk. "You should come with us to Bar Sinister. It's owned by Basil, Tony's brother." He says, crossing his arms.
You raise a brow. "I thought we were assigned to get dirt on the next guest on Declan's and have it in by Monday. Wouldn't that cut into our research time?" You query.
Seb laughs. "You Americans are such workaholics." He shakes his head. "Come get a drink with us!" He pleas, hitting your arm lightly. "Those reputations aren't going anywhere. Besides, we're all going, you'll be the odd one out if you don't."
"All of you?" You say, looking across the room at Declan O'Hara. He's speaking to someone on the phone in his office, the blinds open enough to allow you for a peek. God, what a man he was.
"Yes, all of us. I can't speak for Tony or Declan, though." Seb hums, the feeling of disappointment washing over you. "I'd like to see you there, though." He adds, the both of you sharing a lingering gaze before he gets up and walks away.
If you didn't know any better, you'd think your colleague was flirting with you. You didn't mind it, really. Seb was attractive, and only a year younger than you. Unfortunately, you just had a taste something a little more aged. Everyone seemed to want to fuck each other in this office. You barely managed to avoid the claws of some of the older men yourself, not that you were complaining-- besides the fact none of them were Declan O'Hara.
You decide to stand up, grabbing ahold of your folder before boldly heading over to Mr. O'Hara's office. You slowly knock on the ajar door to get his attention before you step in.
"-We'll discuss this later. Goodbye." Declan says into his phone, hanging it up when he notices you. "Y/n, hello. What can I do for you?" He asks, putting his hands behind his back as he leans back in his chair.
Many things. You think to yourself, trying to look away from his stretched out torso before speaking. "I was just wondering if I could help you with anything else before I leave today Mister O'Hara? I just noticed you seem a bit stressed, maybe I could take something off of your plate if possible." You say, smoothing out your skirt.
He chuckles lightly, leaning forward to take a sip of his whiskey on the rocks. "Call me Declan, love. No need for so much professionalism." He sighs, your heart skipping a beat at his words of endearment as he runs a hand through his hair. "I'm 'fraid not. Tony's up my arse, and my wife's trying to throw this ridiculously expensive party for my son's birthday which also happens to be New Year's and..." He notices your glimmer of concern in your eyes, staring into them as if he got distracted. "I uh," He shakes his head. "Don't worry about it." He says, waving it off.
"I'm sorry, that does seem like an awful lot." You say, your cheeks reddening from his stare. "You don't deserve that, you know. The way Mister Baddingham treats you." You mutter, toying with the folder in your arms.
Declan chuckles, pulling out a cigarette and popping it into his mouth. "Try telling him that." He says wryly, lighting up the smoke.
"Well Declan, there's a group of us going to Bar Sinister later, if you'd like to unwind. God knows we both need it." You try to joke, laughing awkwardly as Declan gives you a look. You clear your throat, straighten your spine. "Sorry, just a suggestion." You mumble.
He laughs genuinely this time, inhaling his cigarette again. "You're funny, y/n. I thought it would be intolerable hiring an American journalist-"
"Hey!" You interject, gasping playfully.
"But!" Declan holds a hand up, stopping you from speaking further. "You're quite lovely to have around. I enjoy your presence." He says, smiling at you. "I hope you consider a permanent placement in the future."
Your face lights up, a big smile on your face now. "Thank you Mister- Declan." You correct yourself. He laughs again. "But I would have to become apart of your personal board to get approved for anything like that." You add.
"Well," Declan says, putting out his cigarette in the ashtray. "I hope you don't mind if I consider that possibility y/n. You have a lot of potential, and I admire your drive." He admits, clasping his hands together and putting them on his desk.
"I am very flattered, Declan. Thank you." You say, looking down before meeting his gaze again. "It's been a pleasure working for you." The undertone of your words hint at something beyond, causing Declan to tilt his chin up a bit to analyze you.
There was something about you that had caught his attention since you first set foot in Corinium, and he couldn't seem to shake his mind from it. It was like a guilty pleasure he could never acknowledge out loud.
The phone rings. Declan nods towards it, signaling for the conversation to end. "See you tonight, y/n." He finishes, taking the phone off it's mantle as you feel heat beginning to simmer in your abdomen, nodding before leaving his office and closing the door behind you.
You have a wide grin on your face as you make your way back to your desk, hastily returning to your work in order to keep the evening free.
-
Much to your surprise, it was karaoke night at the bar. There was a good mix of random patrons and recognizable faces taking turns singing out ballads.
You and Seb were sat at the bar, him sipping on a Guinness as you had a vodka soda. Classic American, he commented when you ordered it.
“You gonna go up there?” You ask Seb, gesturing towards Freddie Jones who was pouring his heart out on the mic.
“Mm, possibly. What’d you reckon I sing? I’m tone deaf but maybe if everyone gets drunk enough no one will notice.” He jokes, earning a fit of laughter from you both.
“I love The Cure if that’s any help.” You suggest, finishing your vodka soda.
Seb quickly gestures for the bartender to bring over a bottle of wine. He notices your curious expression, shrugging his shoulders. “Company’s paying for this shite, not me." He explains. "Also, The Cure? I like 'em, but they’re not gonna translate with these guys.” He says, drinking his pint. He pours you a glass of wine as you glance around the space, trying to spot Declan anywhere.
“What about Last Christmas? You know, by Wham? It’s almost Christmas after all.” You say, already pouncing on your glass of wine.
“I do like that one, maybe I’ll do it yeah.” Seb says nonchalantly, finishing his Guinness. “I’ll go right now, actually.” He suddenly gets up, walking through the crowd.
You grab the wine bottle itself and take a swig from it, feeling the alcohol flush out your face. You hated how it made your cheeks red like you were ashamed to be plastered.
You finally see the man you were waiting for enter the place, scanning the room before his eyes landed on yours. You give Declan a timid wave, causing him to walk over as Seb began singing on stage. “You made it!” You exclaim, returning to pouring the wine into your glass so you seemed classy in front of your inappropriate work crush.
“Yes, sorry. Had to stay later at the office to do more flawed research.” He jests, nodding towards the bartender who already knew his regular. Declan referred to finding dirt on his guests as flawed research, mainly so it didn’t seem so inane in conversation.
"You're very dedicated to your work, I'm surprised you have time for any of this." You say, allowing yourself to speak more freely now that you were definitely tipsy.
"My wife would say the same." He sighs, taking a sip of his glass of whiskey.
You take another sip of your glass, trying to conceal your distaste at the mention of his wife. "Is she not very pleased with you, Declan?" You ask, causing your boss's face to harden. "I'm sorry," You quickly add. "That's personal I shouldn't have said that, that's so stupid of me-"
"Y/n." Declan says, putting a hand on your arm. You feel your body burn up at his touch. "It's okay, really. It's actually relieving to know you don't know anything about my martial problems. Everyone does." He says dryly, taking another sip of his whiskey. "She's not too keen on me being obsessed with my job. She compares it to cheating on her, which I find rather hypocritical considering..." He trails off, smiling at you. "Forget it." He raises his glass, clinking yours. "To you, for being an amazing intern." He slams back his glass, putting it down and grabbing ahold of the aged bottle of whiskey to pour himself.
You smile awkwardly, raising your glass before taking another sip of your wine. You piece it together in your head, realizing that his wife must've committed adultery; just like almost every other married person you've worked alongside so far. "Jesus, Declan. I'm sorry." You mumble, hearing Seb's singing end in the distance.
"Please, don't apologize. It wasn't your fault." Declan says, a look of yearning in his eyes.
"If I were her, I'd never do anything of the sort. If I was with someone like you I'd cherish it everyday." You say, finishing your glass of wine.
Declan raises a brow, chuckling heartily. "And someone would be very, very lucky to have you y/n." He replies, the two of you locked in a stare.
You were definitely drunk by now, and wine always gave you an edge to flirt with whomever you found most attractive in the room. You place a hand on his arm, finally knowing what it was like to feel his muscles through the thin material of his button up. "You deserve better, Declan." You say, rubbing your thumb along his bicep. You watch as the corners of his mouth twitch into a smile, placing his hand over yours on his arm.
"How'd you think I did?" Seb asks, returning the bar and interrupting the moment between you and Mr. O'Hara. You pull back, turning yourself to face Seb.
"You did great, Seb." You say, pressing a kiss on his cheek, causing his face to go as red as his hair. "I think I'm gonna give it a shot, show the English what talents an American has." You grin, unable to make eye contact with Declan out of embarrassment for trying to flirt with a married man. However, the commonality of cheating on spouses here still gave you a sliver of hope as you walked towards the stage, a mask of confidence due to alcohol consumption.
"What song are you gonna do?" Seb asks, following in suit.
"You'll see." You say. You walk up to the host, whispering a song in their ear. They nod, giving you a thumbs up as you get on the stage.
Head Over Heels by Tears for Fears starts to play, causing the entire place to riot with excitement. You grin madly, grabbing ahold of the microphone as the lyrics begin to play. You watch as Declan makes his way through the crowd, standing between Freddie and Seb to watch you perform.
"I wanted to be with you alone And talk about the weather But traditions I can trace against the child in your face Won't escape my attention."
You dance along to the music, singing freely like no one was watching.
"You keep your distance via the system of touch And gentle persuasion I'm lost in admiration, could I need you this much? Oh, you're wasting my time You're just, just, just wasting time..."
You now make eye contact with Declan O'Hara, singing the chorus. Everyone's dancing around, paying no mind to where your attention was.
"Something happens and I'm head over heels I never find out until I'm head over heels Something happens and I'm head over heels Ah, don't take my heart, don't break my heart Don't, don't, don't throw it away..."
Declan watches you in admiration, realizing you're singing directly at him. You look away for the rest of the song, only returning your gaze when the chorus comes up again. When the song ends, you give a little curtesy, putting the mic back on the stand as everyone cheers madly.
"That was brilliant, y/n!" Seb exclaims, holding you in an embrace. You laugh, hugging him back. "Thanks, Seb."
"Seb, can you do one with me?" Daysee asks, causing Seb to pull away from you. "Course, what're you thinking?" The two of them walk away, leaving you be to earn compliments from the rest of your colleagues.
"You have a great voice." Declan says, causing you to turn and face him. "Great song, too." He adds.
"Thanks, it was a personal choice." You say, the next song starting up. Dreams by Fleetwood Mac starts playing, Seb and Daysee's choice. "Fuck, I love this song." You exclaim, looking over at the stage as your friends begin to sing along.
"As do I," Declan says. "Care to dance?" He asks, causing your gaze to return to his outstretched hand.
You smile. "I'd love to." You place one hand on his shoulder, the other in his hand as he places a hand on the small of your back. Your breathing becomes more shallow as the two of you rock to the music, staring into each other's eyes.
You didn't know if you were simply too drunk to acknowledge the reality of the situation, but you couldn't help but wonder if Declan was starting to like you a little more than just an intern that was great at her job.
The space between the two of you becomes insignificant, your head slowly leaning onto his chest as his hand moves down to your lower back, staying at the top of your skirt. You close your eyes as the two of you rock in sync, hearing his heart beat rather triumphally. Your stomach is full of butterflies, and the heat between your legs is almost unbearable as he rubs small circles on your lower back.
He smelled like Tom Ford cologne and Marlboro Golds with an undertone of whiskey, the scent of him nearly more intoxicating than the alcohol itself. You feel his chest vibrate as he quietly sings along to the song, causing you to pull your head back to look at him. You both start singing along, your faces merely inches away from each other.
"When the rain washes you clean, you'll know You'll know You will know Oh, you'll know.."
The song ends, everyone erupting into applause as you register the proximity of you and Declan, taking a step back as you notice the stares of your colleagues.
"Thanks for the dance." You mumble, looking down at the ground. "I uh, need to find Seb he's my ride." You say abruptly, leaving Declan stunned on the dancefloor as you hurriedly approach your ginger colleague. "Can you drive me home now?" You ask, putting a hand on his arm.
"Uh, yeah. Sure. Do you need a ride too Daysee?" He asks, the blonde shaking her head.
"'M alright. I'll see you lads on Monday." She says, grinning as the two of you grab your coats from the bar stools.
"Goodbye, Declan." You say, making eye contact with the brooding man who simply looks at you.
"Goodnight, y/n." He responds, inhaling his cigarette before looking away.
You feel a pang in your chest as you look at Declan for another moment, expecting more. He says nothing else. Seb leads you away from the bar, allowing you to let go of any longing between you and Mr. O'Hara.
Declan knew it was wrong to think of you in any other light outside of work. Even if Maud had cheated on him before, with the tendency to keep going at it, he still couldn't shake the guilt away just yet. He retreated to disregarding you as a means to hopefully make you both forget about the whole ordeal, as if he wasn't thinking about what it would be like to have his hands underneath that tight pencil skirt of yours.
He groaned and ran a hand through his hair, lighting another cigarette. The holiday season was about to be a real hassle, and he was afraid of asking Santa for what he really wished for this time around.

What friends are for...
Tumblr media
Declan O'Hara x Reader (Female) [Rivals TV]
Warnings: SPOILERS for Rivals S1, Mild Infidelity, Recreational Drinking, Swearing
Genre: Best friend's dad (Reader is 21 years old), Romance, Fluff
Summary: Y/N is typically good under pressure. But with alcohol lowering her inhibitions, allowing a brewing crush to swim up to the surface, she panics a little when she needs to pull through for her friend Taggie
"Alright, doll. I've had enough watching you run around this kitchen like Cinderella. Go on and mingle with the bourgeoisie." Y/N sighs, swiftly stealing the plates Taggie was carrying with one arm while her free hand cradles a glass of whiskey.
She carries the plates over to the sink, letting Taggie's complaints play in the background as background noise as she finishes off her fourth drink of the night and sets the glass down in the sink.
"Do you see this mess?! I can't possibly let loose knowing all this work is waiting for me at the end of the party." Taggie grumbles, folding her arms over her chest, "Besides, I don't even like most of those people."
Y/N can't help but gasp dramatically at that proclamation. In all the years she's known Taggie, she's never once managed to pry out a bad criticism from her in regards to anyone. She'd have to pat spy-like attention to her best friend's facial expressions in order to gauge all those feelings she knows she'd never say out loud.
Y/N had originally formed a friendship with Patrick who was in her grade at school. However, she formed an even stronger bond with his year younger sister. It's a girls' thing, she'd tell Patrick, we're all wired to be closer to one another than we'll ever be to a man.
And her statement still rings true nearly a decade later. It's Patrick's birthday and yet Y/N is finding far greater entertainment in the kitchen with Taggie rather than mingling with the crowd of London high society. She gets more than enough interaction with them during her daily internship at the Corinium, she doesn't need her New Year's Eve poisoned by them as well.
That being said, she shares Taggie's sentiment to the full extent. But she's not about to let up on her convincing, not with Rupert Campbell-Black in attendance.
"You don't have to like them all, Tag. One sometimes makes all the difference. And that certain one of yours is in the building, no doubt looking for you amongst the crowd. Yet you're cooped up here, dodging him as if he matters to you as much as those grease-pole climbers and cheaters." Y/N playfully scolds her.
"Don't speak ill of the cheaters, they are his prime area of expertise." Taggie chuckles into the back of her hand as if shocked by the words coming out of her own mouth.
Y/N snorts, throwing a smirk her friend's way over her shoulder, "I don't remember ever saying any names and yet you knew exactly who I was implying. Hmm...." The older girl teases, only to have a dish rag tossed at her head by a blushing Taggie.
"You're in-insufferable, you know that?!" She says, glaring daggers at her best friend.
Y/N laughs heartily, stepping away from the sink. She reaches one hand behind herself, starting to unfasten the corset she has on to keep her emerald dress snug and tight while using her free hand to pinch Taggie's cheek, "And you're absolutely adorable when you're flustered, love." She uses that same hand to yank Taggie's shirt free from her jeans, "Get that off, hun. Don't worry, I'm not looking." She adds the last part with a laugh and a roll of her eyes as she continues battling with the lace fastenings of her corset.
If it were anyone else asking - or rather instructing - her to do this, Taggie would've probably protested and refused. However, if there's one thing she's learned over the nearly decade long friendship with Y/N is that, although her ideas sound like trouble, they're always a recipe for a good time. Tag wouldn't exactly say she's had an exciting life but those pockets of adventure and excitement and thrill that she can recall she owes to Y/N. And so, she complies, lifting her shirt over her head just as her friend frees herself from her corset, causing her dress to hang more loosely around her body but still catching on her curves at certain areas.
"Good, turn around for me." Y/N instructs yet again as she unclips Taggie's bra before quickly putting the corset on her, glad they didn't flash anyone in the split second the action took. Once she's finished lacing it up, Y/N's hands lazily rest on her best friend's shoulders, turning her around to see if her vision looks just as good in reality as it did in her mind. "Dashing, my darling. Take a deep breath for me, hm?"
Tag again complies without complaints, expanding her chest with a deep inhale to see if the corset needs any loosening but it is perfectly snug, still allowing her to breathe freely though. "You really think so?" The younger girl asks, a hopeful twinkle in her eyes.
"I swear on all that's dear to me, love." Y/N says, giving Tag's shoulders a reassuring squeeze. "One more thing...", she mumbles, leaning in to press a kiss to each of Taggie's cheeks, leaving behind lipstick stains on her skin which she later smears to give her a natural looking blush. "Voila! Now go knock Campbell-Black off his high horse and into your bed, doll."
Using the grip she has on the girl's shoulders, Y/N practically ushers her out of the kitchen and into the sea of partygoers before retreating into the quiet solitude herself.
She enters her fairy godmother mindset as she prances around the kitchen, cleaning up the mess around the kitchen, letting the rhythm of the music carry her movements. She periodically refills a new whiskey glass she got from the cupboard. She had really intended for it to be her last drink when she set her previous glass in the sink earlier but she gave up when she saw Mr. O'Hara's whiskey collection. With all these people around, she's certain she'll get away with sneaking a couple glasses of one of the more expensive looking bottles.
"Ah, I see the kitchen mouse has gotten into the good stuff."
Y/N damn near chokes on the amber liquid she just downed when she hears the voice of none other than Declan O'Hara.
She turns around slowly like a scene from a horror movie, or rather a kid getting caught red-handed stealing from the cookie jar. Only worse, more embarrassing considering this isn't her house. Although if she were to say that out loud all three O'Hara siblings and their father would be quick to tell her off.
An array of apologies circles around her head, none sufficient enough to mend the situation - especially not when Declan is smirking at her like that from the kitchen doorway, hands in his pockets. So, instead she settles for the truth: "I was hoping you wouldn't catch me."
Declan only chuckles in response, the sound rich and sweetened by the numerous drinks he's had throughout the night. He's nowhere near drunk but he's had enough to drink to accentuate his natural charm and charisma, softening his otherwise sharp edges.
Edges nearly everyone at Corinium has been cut on since he started working there. And when I say 'nearly' I mean very few have managed to avoid Declan O'Hara's spitfire - Y/N being one of the lucky few despite typically being bad at following orders due to her stubbornness. She isn't sure what exactly it is about her best friend's father that tames that snippy, downright bratty side of her. All she knows is that when he looks at her with those warm, kind eyes and asks rather than tells her to do something, adding a little 'darling' or 'love' at the end, she folds like a house of cards in the wind.
Declan strolls in with an easiness in his step, his eyes never leaving her. As he nears her vicinity, he holds out his own glass, "Care to treat me to my own whiskey, sweetheart?"
Well would you look at that - there she goes folding again. Or more so melting into a puddle at his feet on the tiled kitchen floor.
Words have dispersed into unconnected letters in her head and all she can manage to do is nod as she picks up the whiskey bottle with a trembling hand, pouring a good amount into his glass.
"Thanks, love." He gives her a lopsided smile, lifting his glass, "To the new year."
Y/N is suddenly reminded that she is still in one piece physically - not a pathetic puddle of herself - and in turn she needs to function like a normal human being and avoid embarrassment that will keep her up at night for the upcoming century.
She schools her expression in a faux easy smile as she clinks her glass against his, "To the new year." she repeats before they both take a sip of the lovely whiskey Y/N had helped herself to.
After taking a moment of silence to revel in the pleasure of the amber liquid burning its way down his throat, Declan's eyes focus on her, giving her a head-to-toe scan before speaking, "Where'd your corset go?"
Her heart skips a beat at both the way his gaze is running over the length of her body and the question that insinuates he'd noticed her outfit to begin with. His eyes on her feel like a palpable heat, almost like the feather like touch of a hand. "I-I, um, I lent it to Taggie for a bit. I wanted to doll her up a little and force to enjoy herself. Let loose a little."
Declan nods, a small hum leaving his throat, "Well you've done a good deed, my dear. And a great job taming the kitchen into something presentable. You're a great friend, dear. I'd say you've earned your stolen whiskey." He adds the last part with a quick wink that turns her brain to pudding.
Y/N smiles in response although she wants to absolutely kick herself for involuntarily making bedroom eyes at said friend's dad. She cannot seem to morph her expression into anything other than an openly 'well I'll be damned...' look. So she opts to look away from him instead.
"Oh please, sir, it's nothing. That's what friends are for..." She instinctively takes a sip of her drink to cool down only to be rudely reminded it's whiskey and it has the complete opposite effect to the one she was hoping for.
Speaking of a friend's duties...
Just over Declan's shoulder, Y/N catches glimpse of Rupert and Taggie in the comfortable embrace of one another on the dance floor. Although, judging by the proximity of their faces, dancing isn't their priority at the moment. A split second and a millimeter is all it would take for Y/N to rejoice that her agenda had been successful.
But that's also precisely what it would take for Declan to catch sight of it and lose his everloving shit which would undeniably cause a rift in the mission.
Just to the girls' luck, the moment Rupert's lips touch Taggie's is the exact moment Declan starts turning around - or at least that's how Y/N perceives it.
And Y/N would be damned if she let him.
Before she can think better of it, the alcohol in her system takes a seat behind the wheel and all rational thinking is tossed out the window. At least that's the only way she can explain her following actions.
There isn't a single sober thought behind it when her hands firmly rest on Declan's shoulders, instantly grabbing his attention and prompting him to turn to face her once more. And in that split second, Y/N pushes up on her tippie toes, her lips colliding with his in a kiss that momentarily stuns them both.
The last bit of sobriety fights to regain control of her mind mere seconds after their lips come in contact. It's not much but it's enough to scream at her to pull the fuck away and then run the fuck away. And she would've done just that had Declan's hands not come up to wrap around her waist and pull her closer, his head tilting to the side to deepen the kiss which she instinctively - and eagerly - allows.
All thoughts - both sober and drunk - fall silent in her head. The party in its entirety falls silent around her. All she can hear is her own heartbeat in her ears, mingled with his slightly labored breathing as the kiss reaches new heights in passion and heat with each passing second until they both run out of breath - the lack of oxygen being the only thing to force them apart, not at all the notion of how wrong what they're doing is.
Again, apologies stack themselves sky-high in her brain but none reach her whiskey coated tongue. Instead, she looks up at him wide-eyed and breathless, her now lipstick-void lips parted as she blurts out the first thought that manages to slip past the fog of shock.
"Taggie's gonna kill me"
Declan's own stunned expression gives way to a wide smile as he chuckles breathlessly at her panicked statement, "What she doesn't know won't hurt her, darling."
Even in the midst of her panic and moral crisis, Y/N can't help the flutter in her heart at the petname. "You....you won't tell her, will you?"
Declan clicks his tongue, shaking his head as one of his hands comes up to cup her cheek, "Of course not, my dear. I can keep a secret. That's what friends are for, after all."
Y/N is just about to throw all hesitance to the wind and lean into him fully, reconnect their lips and give herself over to him entirely when - for better or for worse - the clicking of heels approaches the kitchen entrance, sending them on opposite sides of the room like same charges of a magnet. The poor flustered girl is left frazzled, standing on weak knees without Declan's arms to hold her up. Luckily, however, she finds herself on the side of the kitchen where the door to the backyard offers her solitude and salvation within arm's reach. And she takes it a mere second before Maud strolls into the kitchen to show her husband a fraction of the affection she's been showering the other partygoers with all night.
Regardless of the state of Declan and Maud's marriage and their relationship as a whole, what they just did is wrong from all angles and aspects. It's a betrayal to Maude, to Taggie, to Caitlin and Patrick, to Y/N's parents who Declan has known and been friends with for years.
And as such they deserve to be drowning in guilt and remorse for their actions.
One problem: they're not. Not in the slightest. Especially not Declan who cannot seem to tear his gaze away from the backdoor Y/N disappeared through even as his wife finally graces him with her attention and presence.
Attention, presence and affection Y/N would love to give to him and only him. No division or sharing, no inhibitions or reservations.
No wrong or right.
Just a little secret amongst....friends

o1. But we could be safer, just for one day
The morning was biting, the kind of cold that seeped through layers and clung stubbornly to the skin. The air smelled faintly of damp stone and the remnants of an early frost that had yet to burn away under the pale winter sun. Cassie stepped out of the station, her boots scraping against the worn stone steps, each movement deliberate, as though bracing herself for the gauntlet that awaited.
Cassie squinted against the glare of the weak sunlight reflecting off the windows of parked cars. The cold was biting, but the sharp light stung her eyes more than the chill ever could. She pulled her coat tighter around herself, the fabric worn but comforting, even as the weight of the morning pressed down on her shoulders.
Every exhale fogged in the cold air, each one a fleeting reminder of how little control she had over the situation.
The street outside looked deceptively calm at first glance—just another morning in Rutshire. Yet, the moment she stepped outside, everything shifted.
The sound of murmurs started low but quickly grew, swelling into a wave as if the whole town had been holding its breath and now it was released all at once. Cameras snapped into focus, their lenses swinging toward her with mechanical precision. She froze for half a second, her fingers tightening reflexively around the strap of her bag.
It wasn’t fear, exactly, but… Complicated , something complicated lodging itself deep in her gut.
The flash of cameras disoriented her, each click and whirr slicing through the air like a small, deliberate insult. The noise built up, crashing into her like an ocean, drowning out everything else. Her breath caught in her throat, her body instinctively wanting to shrink, to step back, but she couldn’t. She forced herself to keep moving, step by step, as though the very act of walking could outrun their focus, could break free from the suffocating weight of their gaze.
The worst of it wasn’t the flashes of light. It wasn’t the blinding intensity of the cameras, each burst of light cutting through the air like a sharp, unwelcome reminder of her visibility. No, the worst of it was how their eyes turned toward her, narrowing like daggers, gleaming with hunger, tracking her every movement.
She could feel them at her back, their stares pressing into her skin, each one sharper than the last, more invasive. It was as if they were waiting—waiting for her to make a mistake, to falter, to give them the moment they’d been thirsting for.
Cassie could almost feel the weight of their stares like knives against her body. She tried not to imagine what would happen if she turned and met one of their eyes, if she dared to look into the crowd. She feared the pain of the blade they would drive into her, the sensation of being pierced by their judgment, their expectations, their need for her to fall apart in front of them.
She didn’t look. She wouldn’t. Instead, her focus remained ahead, her breath shallow, pulse hammering in her ears. Her feet moved forward, one step at a time, as though the act of walking could carry her away from them, from their questions, from the crushing weight of their gaze.
“Miss Jones! Do you have a statement on Crawford’s allegations?”
The voice rang out sharp, pulling her back from the thickening fog in her mind. Another flash, bright and blinding, and she flinched, her grip on her bag tightening until her knuckles ached. She forced her gaze forward, locking it on a single point—just ahead, a cracked tile on the sidewalk.
The cracked edge of it grounded her, something to hold onto in the mess of the moment, something familiar enough to cling to as she willed herself not to crumble.
“Was locking yourself in the studio worth it?”
Another voice, another flash. It felt like the cameras were multiplying, the sounds of shutters clicking so close that she could barely hear herself think. Focus, she told herself. Focus.
Her father’s voice echoed faintly in her mind. Five things you can see.
She squinted, trying to block out the flashes, trying to center herself.
Five things you can see.
The cracked pavement beneath her feet, the chipped paint on the nearest lamppost, the red scarf fluttering against the side of a woman’s coat, the white tips of her breath fogging in the cold air, the green of Freddie’s car ahead, parked just beyond the throng of reporters.
“Do you think your career is over after this?”
Cassie’s chest tightened further at the question, the implication looming over her like a shadow she couldn’t shake. Her throat constricted, her jaw clenching with the effort to hold it all in. She couldn't stop walking, couldn’t let herself falter even as the questions piled on.
Four things you can touch.
Think. Think .
Her fingers gripped the strap of her bag so tightly that her knuckles burned. The rough fabric of her coat rubbed against her arms with each step, a small reminder of the layers between herself and the world pressing in on her. The cold bite of the winter air sliced through the fabric of her clothing, its sharpness grounding her even as it threatened to freeze her in place. The faint warmth rising from her own breath, visible in the air, was a fragile comfort—an acknowledgment that she was still here, still breathing.
The crowd pressed in tighter. The noise only grew louder, more insistent. The cameras closed the distance, their flashes blinding. Eyes trained on her with hungry precision, demanding something from her, something she didn’t know if she could give.
Three things you can hear.
The flash of cameras was constant, a sharp rhythm that pounded against her skull. The voices, though—those were the worst. The questions, the demands, the judgment—they cut through the air like daggers.
“Miss Jones, is this the end of your time at Crawford’s FM?”
“Do you regret your actions of yesterday?”
“Aren't you the daughter of Matthew Jones?”
The noise, overwhelming, disorienting, built to a wave that crashed into her with each step she took. Every flash felt like it was aimed directly at her, a blinding light that numbed the world and forced her to squint, to retreat further within herself. It wasn’t just the flashes, though. It was the voices, the questions, the insistent demand for something from her.
She could feel it— they wanted her. They wanted her to crumble, to break down, to make a spectacle of herself. But she had nothing left to give. Nothing more to offer.
She felt herself drowning in it, the pressure to answer, to be something for them, something they could consume, a story they could shape and sell. But there was no way out. No safe place. She wasn’t a person to them. She was just a story—a body, walking through their storm of flashing lights and sharp words, an object to dissect, to feed on.
The truth, her truth, was being drowned in the noise.
Two things you can smell.
She tried to focus on something, anything, that would pull her back from the whirlpool of anxiety that threatened to swallow her whole. Focus, Cassie. You can do this.
The cold, biting air around her was sharp and raw, its chill sinking through her coat, its edge cutting deeper than it should. It was a reminder of the world outside the press—of the tangible, of reality.
But even it felt foreign now, distorted by everything else around her. The faint scent of gasoline mingled with the exhaust from the parked cars, the smell of something mechanical, something that didn’t belong to her. But it wasn’t just the smell of the cars—it was the smell of the crowd, too.
Sweat, metal, cold breath—the scent of people packed too closely, their energy seeping into her, their anxiety feeding into her own. There was something else, though, something unfamiliar that made her feel like the air itself was pressing in too tightly around her. Something suffocating, almost as if the weight of their gaze had become a physical force in the air.
One thing you can taste.
Her body reacted, a reflex that she couldn’t control, couldn’t stop. The taste in her mouth was dry, metallic, like blood, like copper. It wasn’t from any injury—no physical wound—but from the panic, from the rush of fear and overwhelm that surged in her chest and settled like a lead weight in her stomach.
It was the taste of her body’s fight-or-flight response. Her mouth was dry, and the bitter, coppery sensation settled on her tongue, warning her, something’s wrong .
But she couldn’t stop. She couldn’t falter now, not with Freddie’s car just ahead. One more step, she thought. Just one more step.
And then— there it was.
The green of Freddie’s car, parked at the curb just ahead, a solid anchor in the chaos. The outline of Freddie leaning against it, arms casually crossed, waiting. His posture was relaxed, but Cassie could see the tension in his shoulders, the way his eyes followed her.
He didn’t move toward her just yet—he knew better than that. But she could feel the steadiness in his gaze, the quiet readiness to step in if she needed him.
Freddie had always been that way. Even in moments like this—when the whole world seemed to close in around her, when every click of a camera or harsh question from the press felt like it was driving her deeper into a corner—he knew how to stay calm. He wasn’t a man who panicked, not for himself and certainly not for her.
And Cassie? She could almost feel the pull of his calmness, the way it anchored her, made the world outside his car feel distant, less suffocating.
Everytime she found themselves in those situations, she wondered if he didn’t give her these first minutes so she could try to stand her ground herself.
Perhaps the time she had screamed at him as a child when he tried to help her walk through a park truly traumatized him.
She kept her eyes on him, letting the sight of him be the only constant in the storm. She could tell he was waiting for her to reach him, not pushing, not rushing, but keeping his distance just enough to give her space to breathe. He knew the look on her face—the exhaustion, the determination not to break. He’d seen it in her before.
She wasn’t sure if it was the heaviness of the day or the sheer relief of seeing him, but the tension in her chest eased just slightly. One more step. One more.
As she neared the car, Freddie moved toward her, stepping into her path to shield her from the press that was pressing in too closely. His hand lightly touched her elbow as if to guide her, but not to hurry her.
It was almost written in his face: See? You could do it, I didn’t want to risk and get punched again.
“You good?” he asked, not so much a question but more a reassurance. He’d seen her more stressed than this, but it didn’t make seeing her like this any easier.
Cassie looked at him for a moment, her breath shallow but steadying, and she nodded, though the tightness in her chest hadn’t entirely gone. She couldn’t quite manage a smile, but she appreciated the simplicity of his gesture.
He wasn’t making her talk. He wasn’t pushing her. He just... Knew.
“I’ll get you out of here,” he said quietly, as they navigated through the last of the reporters. His voice was calm, not dismissive, just steady—almost like a shield that kept the world from closing in.
When they reached the car, Freddie opened the door for her with a quiet gentleness that was far removed from the scene around them. Cassie didn’t hesitate. She slipped inside, letting the car’s quiet hum swallow the noise outside. Freddie followed her, shutting the door behind him with a definitive sound that felt like the end of something—of the chaos, of the pressure.
He turned the key in the ignition, and the familiar rumble of the engine was the first real sound that felt like it belonged to her world again.
Freddie kept his hands on the wheel, his grip firm but relaxed, as the quiet rumble of the car engine filled the space between them. The steady hum felt comforting, a far cry from the chaos they’d just left behind. Cassie stared out the window, watching the blur of streets pass by, the world outside still moving while hers had felt like it had frozen in place.
She was aware of the pressure building up again in her chest, that familiar uncertainty, the questions she hadn’t yet answered echoing in her mind.
The soft click of the blinker was the only interruption to the silence. Freddie glanced at her quickly, his gaze steady, his voice almost too calm.
“What was the one thing I asked you not to do?”
She didn’t look at him, just stared out the window, biting the inside of her cheek as she replayed the conversation he was referring to in her mind.
“To not blow this up?” she said, her voice reluctant.
Freddie nodded slowly, his eyes back on the road. He didn’t sound angry—just... Resigned. Like he had been expecting this.
“And what did you do?”
Cassie shifted in her seat, her fingers drumming lightly on the edge of the door. She didn’t have the energy to lie, but she wasn’t sure she wanted to face the truth, either.
She shifted uncomfortably, leaning her head back against the headrest.
“Are you really gonna make me say it?” She asked back.
Freddie didn’t respond right away. Instead, he gave a little grunt, his focus unwavering as they passed the familiar landmarks of the town.
After a long moment, he finally spoke again, his tone gentle but with that firm edge she knew too well.
“You know,” he started, letting the words sit for a moment before continuing, “this could’ve been a lot easier if you'd just listened. You could've avoided this whole thing.”
Cassie’s eyes narrowed slightly, her frustration bubbling to the surface.
“Easier?” she repeated quietly, “You know I couldn’t just sit there and let them sweep everything I had done under the rug, Uncle. Not after what happened.”
He didn’t respond right away, but his gaze flicked to her, then back to the road.
The hum of the tires on the road became a steady rhythm, grounding Cassie even as her thoughts threatened to spiral.
She glanced out the window again, the passing scenery blurring into a canvas of muted colors. She recognized the landmarks of Rutshire, the same streets she’d walked as a kid, but they felt distant now, like they belonged to someone else’s story.
Freddie sighed, a low sound that seemed to carry his unspoken concerns. His hands on the wheel tightened briefly before relaxing again.
“I get it,” he said, his tone softer now, “I do . But it doesn’t make it any easier. And now you’ve got to deal with the fallout. The press is going to keep circling, and you’re not going to be able to outrun them.”
Cassie’s fingers curled around the strap of her bag, the worn leather grounding her in a way she desperately needed.
“I know," she said, her voice quieter but resolute, "But I won’t just lie down and take it. If they want to turn me into a headline, fine. I just want it to be the truth.”
Freddie glanced at her briefly, his expression unreadable.
“So what happens now?” he asked after a beat, his tone quieter but still steady, “What’s your plan?”
Cassie shifted in her seat, uncomfortable under the weight of the question.
“I don’t know,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
She hadn’t thought that far ahead, hadn’t allowed herself to. The last 24 hours had been a blur of adrenaline and consequence. She couldn’t see past the next few steps, and even those felt like quicksand.
She hesitated, her throat tightening, “I just… I don’t want Mom to know. Not yet. Please.”
Freddie let out another sigh, heavier this time.
“Cassie—she’s going to find out sooner or later. You can’t keep this from her.”
“I know,” Cassie snapped, her tone sharper than she intended. She closed her eyes briefly, exhaling slowly before continuing, “But I need time to figure it out. I need some space.”
Freddie’s gaze softened slightly as he glanced at her again, his brow furrowed with concern.
“Please, Uncle Freddie,” she asked, “She’ll just… Freak out. I can’t deal with that right now.”
He didn’t respond immediately. The quiet in the car felt almost oppressive, the unspoken tension between them stretching thin.
“Fine,” he said, sighing one more time, “I won’t tell her. But this thing, it’s not going away. You’re going to have to face it sooner or later.”
“I know,” Cassie whispered, her words barely audible, “But not yet.”
The conversation lulled, the hum of the tires filling the space again. Cassie leaned back in her seat, her body heavy with exhaustion. The familiar sight of her father’s house came into view, and for a moment, a wave of nostalgia and grief washed over her.
It had been years since she’d been back—since it had been anything but a memory she tried to keep at arm’s length. But now, it was all she had left for a couple of months.
Freddie pulled into the driveway, the car slowing to a stop. Cassie glanced over at him, his jaw tight, his expression set in that familiar way that reminded her of how he’d always been: protective, steady, the kind of presence she could rely on even when everything else felt like it was crumbling.
“Thanks for bailing me out,” she said, her voice softer now.
Freddie’s lips twitched into a small smile, but his eyes were still focused ahead.
“You’re lucky I was already there and the one who got the call, kid. If it had been your mom, you’d be locked down tighter than Fort Knox for the next week.”
Cassie let out a dry chuckle, though the sound didn’t quite reach her eyes.
“I’ll take my chances with you.”
Freddie shut off the engine and leaned back in his seat, glancing at her with a raised eyebrow.
“Well, let’s just hope the next ‘incident’ doesn’t involve a higher bail, alright?” he lifted his brows, a funny smile adorning his face, “For now, let’s get you inside.”
The click of the car doors broke the stillness, and Cassie stepped out, her boots crunching against the gravel. The air was crisp and sharp, carrying the faint smell of damp earth from the recent rain. She tugged her coat closer, her breath visible in the chilly morning light as she took in the surroundings.
The house looked much the same as it had for the past few months since she’d moved in—though a little too neat now, suspiciously so .
The front porch, which had once been stacked with deliveries and odds and ends she hadn’t yet unpacked, was clear. The flowerbeds on either side of the walkway, previously overrun with weeds she hadn’t bothered to tackle, had been trimmed and tidied, the soil freshly turned. Even the small patch of grass in front of the house, which she had ignored in favor of her work, had been cut with a precision she could never have mustered.
Her little witch house , how Bas liked so much of calling it, was a witch house no more.
Her eyes narrowed, suspicion creeping in.
“Wait a second,” she followed Freddie toward the door, “You’ve been here, haven’t you?”
“I might’ve stopped by,” he said nonchalantly, “Didn’t think you’d want to come home to a mess.”
Cassie’s gaze darted to the freshly swept porch and then back to him, her expression caught somewhere between disbelief and reluctant gratitude. He wasn’t wrong—coming home to overgrown chaos would’ve made the day feel even worse. It was already getting her nervous: the chaos and her lack of time to take care of it.
Now that she was unemployed, time wouldn’t be lacking! Ha-ha!
“You’re right,” she admitted begrudgingly, crossing her arms, “But still…” She let the words trail off, “How thorough were you? Please tell me you didn’t drag her into this.”
Freddie turned to face her fully this time, leaning against the doorframe with a smirk.
“Her?” he asked, his tone deliberately teasing.
Cassie groaned, her arms tightening across her chest.
“You know who,” she replied, her voice dry, “If I walk in and find that wife of yours, I’m kicking you both out. No offense, but I really don’t like her. What’s the problem with eating—”
She stopped mid-sentence as she unlocked the front door and opened it, her words dying on her lips. Standing in the living room, a teacup balanced effortlessly in one hand, was Lizzie Vereker.
Lizzie’s presence filled the room effortlessly, as it always did.
She had a certain poise that was hard to define—an air of effortless elegance mixed with sharp wit. Her blonde hair was pulled back neatly, not a strand out of place, and her fitted jacket and boots suggested she had walked straight out of a glossy magazine but didn’t care enough to admit it.
“Cassie,” Lizzie raised her teacup in greeting, “Welcome home.”
Cassie blinked, momentarily caught off guard, before her expression softened into a wide smile. The tension in her shoulders eased for the first time in hours.
“Oh, Lizzie!” she exclaimed, her tone immediately warmer, “So good to see you!”
Lizzie stepped forward gracefully, her movements fluid, as if the chaos of the world outside the house couldn’t touch her. She stopped just short of Cassie, her eyes flickering with humor as she surveyed her.
“And you,” Lizzie replied, her voice carrying that natural lilt of amusement Cassie had always liked about her, “Though I imagine this isn’t the time, I must say, I loved everything you said yesterday. It takes some courage, that’s for sure.”
Cassie’s smile faltered for a moment, the weight of the day creeping back into her mind. She opened her mouth to respond, but Freddie cut in from the doorway, where he leaned with arms crossed, clearly enjoying the exchange.
“Oh, don’t encourage her, Lizzie,” Freddie said with a grin, “She’ll think storming a studio and locking herself in was part of some grand plan.”
Cassie turned, raising an eyebrow at him, grinning herself, “And wasn’t it?”
Freddie snorted, shaking his head.
“If by ‘plan,’ you mean dragging me out of bed at some ungodly hour to try to intercept you,” Freddie said, his voice tinged with dry humor, “Failing spectacularly , and then having to bail you out— sure , let’s call it that.”
Lizzie chuckled, her eyes darting between them as if she were watching a particularly entertaining play. She took a slow sip of her tea, her smirk growing.
“Well,” she said, her tone light but unmistakably sharp, “if it was a plan, I’d say it worked. You’ve certainly got people talking.”
Cassie groaned softly, raking a hand through her hair, the tension in her body apparent.
“Yeah, talking about whether I’ve completely lost my mind.”
Lizzie didn’t reply immediately. Instead, she turned gracefully and gestured toward the living room.
“Come on, then,” she said, moving toward the small table set with a teapot and two extra cups, “Let’s get off our feet. You both look like you could use this more than me.”
Freddie followed without hesitation, while Cassie lingered for a moment, watching Lizzie’s movements. She was always so effortless, so deliberate in everything she did, as though every small gesture had its own purpose.
By the time Cassie joined them, Lizzie had already poured tea into the two remaining cups. She handed Freddie his first, then turned to Cassie, pressing the warm porcelain into her hands with a small smile.
“Drink,” she said, raising her own teacup slightly, her smirk softening into something more thoughtful.
Cassie took a cautious sip, the warmth of the tea spreading through her palms and easing the edge of the cold still clinging to her. She watched as Lizzie raised her cup again, her movements almost ceremonial.
“A touch of madness is underrated, Cassie,” Lizzie said, her voice quieter now, but no less confident, “It’s the predictable ones no one remembers.”
Cassie paused, letting the words settle in her mind. There was something about the way Lizzie said them, the precision and ease in her delivery, that made them linger.
It wasn’t just what she said but how she said it—measured and deliberate, like a writer crafting her lines with the kind of care that made them stick.
Of course, Lizzie was a writer. That’s why she could sway people so effortlessly, why her words carried weight even when they came wrapped in a smirk. It wasn’t lost on Cassie how Lizzie’s confidence seemed to fill the room, not overwhelming it but grounding it, drawing others in without demanding their attention.
The thought brought Cassie a small, unexpected comfort, easing the tension in her chest just slightly. Lizzie’s presence had a way of making things feel less chaotic, less overwhelming, as though the storm outside the house couldn’t touch them here.
It was good to see her like this, Cassie realized, enjoying the side of Lizzie that was unburdened by her husband’s presence. If anyone asked her, Cassie would have no problem saying it: Lizzie and Freddie were undoubtedly bound by their shared taste in... Less-than-ideal partners.
For the first time that morning, Cassie allowed herself to let go of her guard. She looked directly at Lizzie, meeting her gaze fully. It wasn’t something she often did—eye contact always felt like a risk, like it would slice her in a half.
But now, the act felt steadying, reassuring in a way she hadn’t anticipated.
She smiled, small but genuine, the warmth from the teacup in her hands spreading to her chest. Lizzie noticed, of course—she always noticed—but said nothing, simply tilting her head slightly in acknowledgment before taking another sip of tea.
“Then they say I’m the one talented with words,” Cassie said, her voice tinged with a trace of irony. She darted her gaze away, focusing on the warm tea in her hands, using the cup as a shield from the thoughts still swirling in her mind.
“And you are,” Lizzie said, the smile never leaving her lips, “You could write a book if you wanted. People would read it.”
Cassie let out a dry chuckle, shaking her head as she leaned back, letting the softness of the moment wrap around her like a warm blanket.
“Doubt it would sell,” she muttered.
In the corner of the room, the rotary phone began to ring, its sharp, persistent tone cutting through the warmth of their conversation. Cassie’s gaze flicked to it briefly before returning to the scattered papers on the table—notes from interviews that felt like relics of a past life.
The ringing persisted, the sound grating and insistent, like an accusation she couldn’t ignore.
“Crawford’s plan is working, though,” Cassie continued, her voice trailing off as the unease in her stomach twisted again, “He’s made sure anyone who could help me—anyone who might’ve given me a shot—they’re already turned away. Every single one of the people I had planned to interview…”
Her words faltered as her hand gestured vaguely toward the table.
Lizzie leaned forward slightly, resting her elbows on her knees, her expression softening. The room, warm with the aroma of tea and faint lavender, seemed to hold its breath as she spoke.
“You’re giving Crawford too much credit,” her tone measured, as though she were trying to pull Cassie back from her spiraling thoughts, “He’s powerful, sure. But he’s not omnipotent.”
Cassie’s lips twitched into something that wasn’t quite a smile—more a bitter acknowledgment.
The phone’s ringing continued, cutting through the air like a blade.
“You think I’m being paranoid?” Cassie asked, her voice carrying a weary edge as her eyes darted between Lizzie and Freddie.
Freddie, who had been quietly nursing his own cup of tea, leaned forward. The leather of his chair creaked softly under the shift of his weight. His elbows rested on his knees, and his hands clasped loosely as he regarded her with a steady, thoughtful gaze.
“No,” Freddie said plainly, his voice steady but not unkind, “I think you’re being too negative.”
The silence that followed seemed to settle heavily over the room, broken only by the soft hiss of the radiator. Cassie’s frown deepened as she thought more and more about what had happened, what she had done.
Freddie pushed himself up from his chair, his movements deliberate, and crossed the room. The floor creaked beneath his weight, a sound that seemed louder in the tense quiet. He stopped at the rotary phone, his gaze falling on the answering machine beside it.
“You want to talk about Crawford’s plan?” he said, resting his hand lightly on the edge of the machine, “Let’s hear it for ourselves.”
Cassie stiffened in her chair, her lips parting as though to protest, “Freddie, don’t—”
“Might as well,” Lizzie interrupted, leaning back in her seat and crossing her arms, “If you’re convinced everyone’s turned their back on you, let’s see if that’s true.”
Cassie shook her head, her hands gripping the bloody teacup.
“I don’t need to hear it. I already know what they’ll say.”
“Do you?” Freddie asked, his calm tone challenging her resolve.
Cassie opened her mouth to protest, but Freddie was quicker. His fingers moved with purpose, pressing the button on the answering machine. The mechanical click echoed through the quiet room, a sound that, despite its ordinariness, seemed to sharpen the tension in the air.
Her fingers held firmly around the edges of her teacup, her knuckles pale against the porcelain as the words from the machine filled the room.
“Cassandra,” the first voice said, clipped and urgent, “This is Alan Withers. I’ve heard about the stunt you pulled, and while I understand you’re passionate, I cannot afford to be seen associated with... Good luck. ”
Cassie’s eyes dropped to her lap, the cold porcelain of the teacup doing nothing to help her. The air around her felt thinner, as if it were trying to suffocate the storm swirling inside her.
Alan . Now, a closed door.
His rejection felt personal, even though she knew it wasn’t. It was just the world she had chosen to be a part of.
But now, standing in the wake of that decision, it didn’t feel like a choice at all.
Lizzie shifted slightly, the soft clink of her teacup against the saucer as she adjusted her position. She spoke, but her words felt distant, as if they were just part of the atmosphere and not quite meant for Cassie.
“Well, that’s one way to say nothing,” she muttered under her breath, trying to lighten the moment, but the words fell flat, like a poorly thrown stone.
Cassie didn’t respond, her mind spinning with the implications of Alan’s words. She wanted to argue, to tell herself that this didn’t matter—that she was right, that she wasn’t the problem—but she couldn’t bring herself to say it out loud.
She shifted in her seat, her fingers lightly tracing the edge of the teacup. The warm porcelain against her fingertips should have been comforting, but her thoughts were miles away, swirling in a mix of frustration and helplessness.
The machine beeped again, and Cassie’s stomach churned with the anticipation of what might come next.
“Cassie, it’s David from Insight Weekly . I’m sorry, but after everything that’s happened, we’ve decided to shelve the feature. It’s just... Too hot right now. I wish you the best.”
Her chest tightened further at the sound of his voice. She had relied on David—trusted him as one of the few allies who might have helped her navigate the politics of this world.
But now, even he has backed away. She knew it wasn’t personal, again , she knew that—she knew it was the nature of the beast they were all a part of— but it felt personal. No matter how she tried to convince herself it wasn’t.
Every time one of them backed away, it felt like another piece of herself was chipped away.
“See?” she said softly, almost to herself, “This is exactly what Crawford wanted. He’s cut me off from everything.”
Freddie stood silently, his gaze focused on the machine, but he didn’t speak immediately. Cassie wanted to say something—wanted to ask him to turn it off. But she couldn’t find the words.
Her throat was dry, a knot in her chest, and the room felt smaller than it had just moments before.
“Cassie,” a familiar, softer voice began, “It’s Nathan. I think I might’ve found more documents you’d want to see. I can meet this weekend. Let me know.”
Cassie’s focus snapped back to the speaker, and the suddenness of the words made her pause.
Nathan’s voice brought with it a reminder of everything she had worked for—the construction scandal, the faulty materials, the cover-up that had been buried beneath corporate lies. All in his own workplace.
She remembered the late nights, the piles of documents strewn across her desk, the adrenaline of uncovering something that could actually make a difference. But those days felt distant now, like something just out of reach.
Lizzie watched her closely, a quiet acknowledgment of Cassie’s internal shift. Always reading her mind.
“See, not everyone’s written you off,” she said gently.
Cassie didn’t respond right away, lost in the recollections of what Nathan had told her. She had started this, but now the world seemed too big to handle alone. Every part of her wanted to follow through, to pick up the pieces, but the reality of being on her own—the consequences of defying Crawford—had set in. She had nothing to rely on now.
Then, another voice came through.
“Cassie,” the machine crackled, “It’s Sarah Halverson. You talked to me about the water issues near the factory. I—I’m scared. They’ve been sending people to my house, and I don’t know what to do. Please, if you’re still working on this, call me.”
Cassie stood frozen for a moment.
She remembered Sarah clearly—her face, her quiet fear as they sat together and discussed the dangers surrounding the factory. Cassie had promised Sarah she’d do everything she could to get the truth out.
But now, with everything falling apart, it felt like Sarah’s voice was just one more reminder of how far she had fallen.
For a moment, the room felt unbearably quiet, the hum of the radiator and Lizzie’s tea cup returning to her hands. Everything felt so irrelevant.
Her mind pulled her back to the interview with Sarah, her trembling hands clutching a cheap plastic cup of tea. Cassie had promised her, “I’ll make sure they hear your story.” But now?
Now Sarah was being threatened, and Cassie had no platform left to fight for her. The silence stretched on until Freddie cleared his throat, his voice breaking through her haze.
“This woman believes in you, Cassie,” he said quietly, nodding toward the phone, “She’s terrified, and she still called you. That means something.”
But Freddie’s words didn’t reach her—not fully.
"Depending on me?" she muttered, her voice barely audible.
She crossed her arms tightly, her teacup long forgotten—pacing toward the window. The pale light filtering through the sheer curtains did little to soften the storm raging inside her.
"How am I supposed to help anyone?" The words burst out of her, "I don’t have a platform, Uncle. Crawford made sure of that. No one will hire me—not after what I’ve done. I’ve got nothing."
Her fingers tightened against the window frame, the cold biting at her skin. She tried to steady her breathing, but the thought of Sarah—alone, frightened—twisted in her chest like a knife.
"I promised her I’d help," she whispered, almost to herself, "But what can I even do anymore? There’s no one left to listen."
The next message began, not giving time for Freddie or Lizzie to try arguing. Instead, both of them exchanged a look.
Cassie steeled herself. She wasn’t sure if she could handle more disappointment.
“Cassie,” came the familiar voice of her mother, chirpy and unaware. Despite everything, Cassie tried to embrace herself, but more disappointment would come for sure , “Sweetie, I miss you! How are you there? How’s your job? You do know if anything goes south, you can always come back here and I’ll help you find a good husband. Just please, give me some updates about how you’re doing there!”
Cassie groaned, dragging a hand through her hair. Her mother’s words stabbed at her, each one a reminder of how far removed her family was from her world. To her mother, Cassie’s career was just a phase—a way to delay the inevitable: s ettling down, giving up .
The gulf between their worlds had never seemed so wide.
She was exhausted—exhausted in a way that went beyond sleepless nights and long days. It was a bone-deep weariness, the kind that came from constantly trying to explain herself to people who never seemed to understand. How could they?
She had left Chicago for a reason, though even now, it felt like no one really got why. It wasn’t just about escaping the predictable future her mother envisioned for her—a housewife with a perfect smile and a carefully curated life. It was more than that.
Cassie wanted to matter.
She wanted to take the tools she had—the sharp instincts, the knack for seeing what others missed—and do something with them. The world was covered in layers of polished lies, a pristine rug under which powerful men swept their sins. She wanted to rip that rug away, to expose what lay beneath: the stolen innocence, the squandered money, the lives destroyed by greed and neglect.
And yet, no one else seemed to understand.
To her mother, ambition was just a stepping stone to disappointment. To her peers, it was easier to keep their heads down, to avoid making waves…
The loneliness of it all dragged her down, but the spark inside her refused to die. If no one else saw it, if no one else believed in it, then she would . She had to. Because if she didn’t, who would?
“Can we be done already?”
The words slipped from her lips, soft and fractured, as if she’d spoken them into a void. Cassie wasn’t talking to Lizzie or Freddie; she was talking to the storm in her head, to the endless loop of thoughts that kept dragging her under.
Freddie didn’t respond right away. Instead, he moved with deliberate calm, stepping over to the phone and turning it off, silencing missed calls. The absence of sound was deafening, the stillness thick and unyielding.
Then, he finally dared to ask, “You’re still against the idea of joining, aren’t you?”
Cassie stopped mid-step, her pulse quickening as her shoulders stiffened. She didn’t need him to say it. The meaning hung heavy in the air between them, unspoken but unmistakable . Her gaze dropped to the floor, as though meeting his eyes might shatter whatever fragile resolve she had left.
“ I can’t ,” she said, her voice trembling under the weight of her own admission. She straightened her posture, trying to steady herself, but the words felt like glass in her throat, “ I wasn’t made for that. I can’t have my face on a screen, Freddie. It’s not who I am. ”
The silence that followed felt sharper than any argument, heavier than any rebuke. She wished, desperately, that she was wrong. That she could be the person Freddie seemed to think she could be.
How much easier would everything be if she had been born with a stronger spine. If her voice didn’t falter when too many eyes turned her way…
The thought of stepping in front of a camera made her stomach churn, her pulse thrum erratically in her ears.
The idea of Venturer had been lingering for weeks now—a chance to join her uncle’s project, to have a platform big enough to amplify voices like Sarah’s and Nathan’s. It was everything she had ever wanted, yet it felt wrong , suffocating in ways she couldn’t put into words.
The thought of facing an audience, of staring into cold, unblinking cameras instead of speaking from the safety of her anonymity, made her chest tighten painfully. She shook her head as nausea crept up, sharp and relentless.
“ How would I even do it? ” she whispered, almost to herself.
Cassie looked away, fixing her gaze on the far wall as if it might anchor her.
I can barely look someone in the eyes without my nerves turning on me. How could I put myself on a screen for all of them to see? For all of them to judge?
Her hands clenched into fists at her sides. She had stories to tell—a cause worth fighting for. But could she sacrifice herself, her sense of safety, to make it happen?
The unease settled in deeper as her thoughts spiraled further, pulling her into darker considerations. Freddie had spent weeks trying to bring her into Venturer, his work on the project tethered to his closest friends.
But in Rutshire, nothing came without opposition, and Venturer had its rival: Tony Baddingham’s empire…
Goddamnit , she had almost forgotten about that bastard.
“Do you think that maniac, Tony Baddingham, knows anything about this yet? My... Stunt? ” Cassie’s voice was barely above a whisper, yet the concern was clear in her tone.
Lizzie raised an eyebrow, her calm demeanor not faltering.
“Probably doesn’t even know you exist,” she tried to brush the tension aside.
But Freddie’s reaction was different. His brow furrowed, the corners of his mouth tightening as his thoughts drifted to darker possibilities.
“I’ve kept my word," he said after a pause, his voice steadier than his expression, “I haven’t mentioned you to anyone in the circles you wanted to avoid. That includes Tony.”
Cassie exhaled, relief washing over her in brief, fleeting waves. But the fear lingered, shadowy and persistent.
What if they were wrong?
Her connection to Freddie had always been something she kept at arm’s length, knowing full well the consequences if someone like Baddingham found out. Her uncle had warned her countless times about the man’s ruthlessness, his uncanny ability to weaponize even the smallest vulnerabilities.
Tony Baddingham would do anything to destroy Venturer, without hesitation, and if he found out she was part of it—Freddie’s niece—she knew he wouldn’t hesitate to use her against them.
Freddie stepped closer, his hand resting lightly on her shoulder. His touch was grounding, a small gesture meant to steady her as her thoughts threatened to spiral out of control again.
“Hey,” he said softly, “It won’t happen. You’re too careful. There’s no way for him to make the connection—not unless you want him to.”
His confidence was reassuring, but Cassie couldn’t ignore the tightness in his jaw, the unspoken acknowledgment that even Freddie couldn’t control every variable.
“We’re resilient,” he added, his hand giving her shoulder a gentle squeeze, “If it comes to it, we’ll figure it out. But this?” He gestured faintly toward her, toward the doubt clouding her features, “You can’t let it paralyze you.”
Cassie nodded slowly, though the storm inside her was far from over. Still, Freddie’s presence gave her something to hold onto—a flicker of possibility in the chaos. It wasn’t much, but it was enough to take the next step forward.
“I don’t know, Uncle,” she darted her aways between him and Lizzie, “I don’t know how to help these people anymore, I don’t have a platform to do that. No radio station will hire me, and I won’t go back to Chicago.”
Freddie’s gaze held steady, his voice unwavering.
“You don’t need a platform handed to you, Cassie. You’ve always found your own way. You didn’t start because someone gave you a microphone—you started because you couldn’t stay quiet.”
Cassie’s shoulders tensed at his words, how they pondered in her mind. She leaned forward, running a hand through her hair, frustrated by the constant loop of helpless thoughts swirling in her mind.
“But that was different,” she replied, her voice strained. She rubbed her temples, trying to stave off the headache that seemed to pulse with each word, “This isn’t some blog or local tip-off. Sarah needs real help. Nathan’s risking his neck with those documents… And there is for sure more people where they came from. They need more than someone shouting into the void.”
The room seemed to close in around her as the words left her mouth, the air heavy with the unsaid. She wasn’t just talking about Sarah and Nathan anymore. She was talking about herself, the fight she had started that now felt like it was slipping out of her control.
The frustration simmered beneath her skin, making her restless.
Lizzie, who had been sitting across the table, leaned back in her chair with a slight, knowing smile. Her tone was light, almost teasing, but there was a sharpness to it that Cassie couldn’t ignore.
"You make it sound like shouting into the void is nothing," Lizzie said, carrying an edge that cut through the fog in Cassie’s mind, "Maybe you forgot, but you’ve been shouting into the void for years—and people listened. That’s why you’re here."
Cassie shot Lizzie a look, but didn’t respond.
She knew Lizzie was right. Deep down, she knew it. But that didn’t make the doubt fade.
It didn’t make the uncertainty about whether she had anything left to give vanish.
She’d always believed that stories could change the world—that her voice could make the difference. But lately? Lately, it felt like all she was doing was chasing her own tail, stuck in a cycle of frustration and failure. There was too much at stake now. The fight wasn’t just hers anymore.
Her eyes wandered across the room, lingering on the mess of papers scattered on the table. Her unfinished work. Her unspoken promises. And through it all, that suffocating feeling—the one that told her she was running out of time to make any of it count.
Cassie swallowed hard, trying to push the tightness in her throat down, but it wouldn’t go.
“I don’t know if I can do it anymore,” she muttered, more to herself than to either of them.
Freddie sighed, but kept himself quiet. He could hear it in her voice—the uncertainty, the defeat she was too proud to admit. His jaw clenched briefly before he exhaled, shifting in his seat.
“Cassie, you’ve been through worse, and you’ve always come out the other side. This is no different.”
Freddie’s voice was steady, but there was something in the way he said it—something that held the weight of their shared history. She met his eyes despite the internal pain it caused, yet her gaze quickly faltered, unable to hold the connection.
His belief in her was palpable, but it only made the doubt gnaw at her harder.
“I’ve never been silenced like this before,” she whispered, the words slipping out before she could stop them.
She turned away slightly, her back to him, her fingers gripping the edge of the table. The room was suddenly too small, the air too thick with the pressure of his expectations.
Cassie knew what he was thinking.
He was thinking that if she accepted his offer, everything could change. She’d have a platform, a voice loud enough to make a difference. It was the opportunity she’d always dreamed of, a step up in her career. She had always prided herself on being someone who didn’t wait for opportunities to come to her—she made them.
But this? This felt different.
Her mind raced, but it wouldn’t let her consider it fully. She could see it, clear as day—the image of her face, her name, broadcasted across every screen in Rutshire, in every household. Everyone would know her. Everyone would see who she really was, the woman behind the words, the person who had always kept her distance from the limelight.
It wasn’t about the career boost. She knew this was the kind of exposure that would propel her forward, that could change everything for her. But it came with a price. The idea of being that exposed, of having every part of her life scrutinized by people who would never understand, made her stomach twist.
Would they care about the stories she told? Or would they focus on what she wore, how she stood, whether her words matched her image? She wasn’t sure she could bear the thought of being picked apart in that way, of everyone trying to dissect her every move.
She’d always been better off behind the scenes, in the shadows where she could move unnoticed, a voice without a face.
Cassie turned back to Freddie, her hands clenched at her sides.
“I don’t know if I’m ready for that,” she said, her voice small, “To be seen. To be exposed.”
Freddie didn’t respond immediately. He didn’t need to. He understood what she meant, even if he didn’t fully understand how deep was her turmoil.
He had his own demons, his own vulnerabilities. But Cassie wasn’t him. She wasn’t built for the spotlight in the way he might’ve been.
“I get it,” Freddie said quietly after a moment, “You don’t have to make the decision right now. But you’ve never backed down before. You’ve always had the courage to stand up and face it. This... This could be another one of those times. Just think about it, Cass.”
The words felt both comforting and suffocating. The encouragement was there, but so was the unspoken pressure, the weight of an opportunity that might slip through her fingers if she didn’t take it now. It wasn’t just about the decision anymore—it was about whether or not she had the courage to step into the unknown and face everything that would come with it.
She didn’t want to disappoint him, or herself. But this wasn’t just another story to chase. This was her life, her identity, everything she’d built and protected slipping away in an instant. And the scariest part? She didn’t know if she was ready to give that up. Not yet.
Lizzie and Freddie had been gone for about an hour, but it felt like the day had stretched into an eternity. The silence in the house was deafening, a stark contrast to the constant buzz of the phone calls and conversations that had been filling her life just days ago. Cassie leaned back in her chair, the worn wood creaking under her, as her eyes fixed on the rotary phone in the corner of the room.
The phone, once a lifeline, now seemed like an enemy. Its presence mocked her, a reminder of the calls she had ignored—the people reaching out for help, for answers. Every missed call, every voicemail, was a reminder of her failure to provide what they needed.
The truth. Justice. Their voices. Now, she was unable to even summon the will to pick up the receiver.
Her mind ran in circles.
They’re all waiting for me, and I can’t even give them the time of day, she thought bitterly.
How could she help them when she couldn’t help herself? How could she expose the corruption, the lies when she didn’t have a platform to stand on? Without the station, without any means to broadcast what she knew, the truth seemed so much more distant.
What good were all the documents, all the testimonials, if no one would listen to them? No one would care?
The fear twisted inside her, sharp and suffocating.
What am I going to do? she wondered, staring at the receiver.
She thought back to the last time she’d seen Bas, how worried he had looked when she left the bar with only one goal in mind. She hadn’t known then just how wrong things would go—how horribly everything would spiral.
All she had wanted was to make things right, to take down the people who’d been abusing their power for years. But now, what did she have left?
Nothing but the wreckage of a failed mission, the remnants of a career she’d spent years building, now in ruins.
How did it all go so wrong?
Her fingers hovered over the fabric of her sweater, fear gripping her. Every number in her contacts list felt like a mountain too high to climb. What would they think of me now?
Her father’s name, Jones—what a curse it felt like now. He had built his own reputation, a notorious one, but would it help her now if she attempted to use it in her favor now? Could it?
It was a thought that had crossed her mind more than once. If she could just use his legacy—his connections—maybe there would be a way to turn things around. Once, the mere thought of it would have hurt her dignity, but now ? She was desperate enough to consider it.
If anyone would take a chance on me now, they wouldn’t be doing it for me. They’d be doing it for my father’s name, she realized.
But was her father’s name enough to erase the stain she’d just inherited from her failed career at Crawford’s?
Her mind countered: What if it works? Then, what?
Cassie pulled a piece of paper from the pile beside her and began scribbling down names—contacts from her past stories, the ones she had been able to trust, all who had once worked with Charles Crawford. Some of them were still working at other stations. Others had long since been fired, discarded by Crawford and the network for not fitting the mold, no other stations willing to hire them.
Fired employees, they knew the dirt. Perhaps, more than her even. They could help her to tear down the last brick of Crawford’s empire.
If he wanted to tear her name apart, then, she would return the favor.
She stared at the list in front of her, wondering if any of them would be willing to talk to her now, knowing that she was, for all intents and purposes, unemployed. And so fucked up as most of them were.
It would be a long shot, and she knew it. How far using her father’s name would let her go?
But even as the thought flickered in her mind, the reality of it hit her like a wave: I don’t have anything left to work with. If no one will hire me, all of this is meaningless.
All of it.
She stared at the list again, the names swimming in her vision, and then her eyes shifted to the window. Outside, the world was moving, indifferent to her turmoil. The thought of picking up the phone and calling any of these people felt like a weight she couldn’t bear.
Would any of them be willing to talk to her? A girl with a reputation her father had left behind—a reputation I don’t even want to be a part of anymore. But, suddenly is ready to take upon what he had started?
Would they even take her seriously?
She ran her fingers through her hair, trying to shake the doubt from her mind. If only she could find someone who would listen to her for who she was and not who her father was… But that wasn’t how the world worked, if she wanted someone to still see some spark in her, she would have to play dirty and use her father’s name.
Her thoughts were interrupted by a sudden knock on the door. Her heart jumped into her throat, her hands tightening around her sweater as her mind scrambled to make sense of it.
Who could that be?
She stood, her legs shaky, and made her way to the door, still holding into the edges of the damn sweater as if her life depended on it. If it was another reporter again, she didn’t know if she would be strong enough to shove them off.
For a moment, she just… Stood there, really . Her fingers moving only to hover over the knob, waiting for something—anything—to give her the clarity she needed.
"Who is it?" she called out, her voice sounding small and weak in the vast emptiness of the house.
There was a brief pause, and then the response came.
"Ahm, Declan O'Hara."
Declan O’Hara? The Declan Fucking O’Hara?
She had never spoken to him—not directly, not since she moved to Rutshire. But his name… She knew it well . It had come up in nearly every conversation with Bas, with her uncle, even Lizzie.
The man who had made a career of being sharp, ruthless, and always in control of the room.
She wasn’t sure why he would be here, at her door, now of all times .
What does he want with me? She thought, a flash of unease running through her.
Cassie’s mind raced through the stories she had heard about him—the interviews that made headlines, the scandals that had followed him like shadows, the way people either loved or hated him, but never ignored him. She had followed his career almost from the beginning, admiring the boldness in his approach, the way he could dissect a situation with just a few well-chosen words.
It was exactly what she had once wanted for herself, when she first dreamed of being a journalist. Back in Chicago.
Yet here he was, standing at her door, a reality she never could have predicted.
Why now?
Cassie stared at the door as though willing it to explain itself. Declan O’Hara—her thoughts were still tripping over the impossibility of his presence here. It didn’t make sense. Why would someone like him, a man whose name carried both weight and controversy, show up unannounced at her door?
Taking a steadying breath, she pulled the door open.
And there was he.
Declan O’Hara stood on her doorstep, casual yet undeniably present, the kind of man who didn’t knock on doors unless he already knew they’d be opened.
His features were sharper in person than in the photographs or on television—his jawline more defined, the stubble catching the dim light. His dark eyes, shadowed but piercing, seemed to size her up in an instant, taking in every detail without giving much away. The lines at the corners of his mouth hinted at a man who’d seen enough to be cynical but wore charm like a second skin instead, a disarming weapon as much as a choice.
And then, of course, there was the mustache, impeccably trimmed, adding an air of polish to someone who seemed never rushed, never flustered, and entirely too aware of the presence he carried with himself.
Cassie’s breath caught in her chest, and she wondered, not for the first time that morning, if she was still asleep and dreaming up the absurdity of it all.
“Miss Jones,” his voice even, the faint trace of a Dublin lilt giving his words an edge. He regarded her with quiet interest, his eyes scanning her face like a puzzle.
“Mr. O’Hara,” she managed, her tone steady despite the racing in her chest.
He tilted his head slightly, a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth, “I hope I’m not interrupting.”
Cassie frowned, unsure how to answer. Was he joking? Interrupting what—her ongoing existential crisis?
God , he could have interrupted it anytime he preferred, really. She wouldn’t complain.
“You’ve certainly caught me off guard,” she admitted instead, her fingers tightening on the knob.
“Good,” he said simply, as though that had been his goal all along.
Cassie blinked at him, her world spinning a bit too fast. She wasn’t sure whether to be irritated or intrigued by his audacity. The air felt heavier, charged with an energy that hadn’t been there moments before.
Declan O’Hara wasn’t just a man standing at her door; he was a presence . A gravitational force pulling her in despite every instinct screaming to guard herself.
That was how his guests felt? That's why they continued in their seats even when he crossed the line?
“I heard your broadcast,” he said, the trace of an Irish lilt softening his words, “It made an impression.”
“An impression,” Cassie repeated, frowning, “I assume you’re here to tell me it was a bad one.”
Declan’s mustache twitched, and for a fleeting moment, she wondered if he was suppressing a smile or a retort.
“Not quite,” he said, his voice hinting at something more than polite interest.
His dark eyes settled back on hers, unflinching and steady. There was something in his gaze, as though he were testing her, waiting to see how she’d react to his scrutiny.
It hurt her to look away, but the force of it was too much. She glanced toward the floor, the slight chill of the open doorway creeping up her spine.
Declan didn’t move, obviously
Seeing him on television was one thing—his charisma contained within the screen, his sharp words cutting through interviews like a scalpel. But here, standing in front of her, he was... Different. He wasn’t just a personality, a face attached to the stories she’d watched from a distance.
He was real . And his presence wasn’t something she’d prepared herself for.
There was a magnetic quality to him, the kind of charm that wasn’t loud or forced but instead lingered in the way he carried himself, in the deliberate cadence of his words. It unsettled her, this awareness of him.
She tried to lock the thought away before it could take root. The last thing she needed was to feel self-conscious about Declan O’Hara.
“Then what exactly are you here to tell me?” she asked, forcing her voice into a steadiness she didn’t entirely feel.
Declan’s lips curved ever so slightly, his expression one of quiet amusement.
“I’d say it’s less about telling and more about asking,” he said, his tone dropping, the lilt wrapping around each syllable with an ease that felt entirely unfair.
“Asking what ?” she pressed, her brows drawing together in suspicion.
He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, his gaze shifted past her, sweeping over the interior of her home with the same sharpness he had directed at her moments ago. The soft yellow glow from the hallway lamps cast long shadows against the worn wallpaper and the scattered mess of papers on the table just visible in the background.
“May I?” he asked, gesturing toward the space behind her. The neutrality of his tone made the question feel less like a request and more like a formality.
Cassie hesitated. For a moment, she considered shutting the door in his face, but the calm, unhurried way he stood there made her pause. Declan O’Hara didn’t knock on doors without a reason, and whatever he wanted to say, she had a feeling it wasn’t something she could afford to ignore.
She stepped back reluctantly, gesturing for him to enter.
“You’ve come this far,” she said, her voice filled with dry humor, “I suppose it would be rude to leave you standing in the cold.”
Declan’s eyes flicked back to hers, lingering for a fraction longer than necessary. She could feel his gaze over her, the way it seemed to cut through her walls without effort, slashing her insides.
There was nothing overt in the way he looked at her—no smirk, no lingering stare—but the intensity of his gaze was unsettling all the same. It wasn’t something she could pin down, and that only made it harder to shake.
That was the Declan O’Hara effect, she guessed.
“Generous of you,” he murmured, stepping inside with an ease that suggested he was no stranger to navigating unfamiliar spaces. His coat shifted as he moved, the dark fabric catching the light as he turned to take in the room.
Cassie shut the door behind him, the sound of it closing grounding her slightly. She leaned against the frame for a moment, her eyes instinctively following his movements as he took in the room.
He didn’t linger on any one thing, yet it felt as though nothing escaped his notice—the scattered papers on the table, the crumpled throw on the couch, the worn edges of the armchair by the window…
Everything felt suddenly too intimate, too exposed under his quiet scrutiny, as though her home had unwittingly laid bare the corners of her mind.
And then, he moved. Just a slight shift as he turned, the muted light catching on the sharp line of his jaw, casting shadows along his cheekbones. His coat hung open, revealing the crisp lines of his shirt beneath, the gleam of a watch peeking out from under his sleeve. The shadows softened the severity of his features, but the intensity remained, resting in the sharp focus of his dark eyes.
For a brief moment, Cassie wondered what it would be like to see him somewhere else, as a stranger in some bar—a thought she quickly pushed aside. Declan O’Hara wasn’t someone you invited to drink, in this case, her specifically .
There was no world where she would be in a bar, sat by his side, drinking and laughing about drunk jokes.
“Not what I expected,” he said, his voice breaking the silence. He didn’t elaborate, but there was no judgment in his tone, only curiosity.
Cassie raised an eyebrow, masking her unease with a wry smile.
“What were you expecting? A newsroom?”
He glanced at her, and for the briefest moment, his mustache twitched with what might have been amusement, “Something a little more... Guarded.”
“Well, that was my father’s place,” she shrugged, “I didn’t change anything since I moved in, it still has his face and personality.”
Declan’s head inclined ever so slightly, his gaze not trembling as it traced the room’s quiet details. The soft lamplight cast long shadows over the cluttered surfaces, the books stacked unevenly on the table, the photograph frames turned just slightly askew.
If he found anything notable, he didn’t show it; his face remained unreadable, save for the slightest narrowing of his eyes, as though he were cataloging each element of her space.
“It feels lived in,” he said, his voice measured, a step back from casual but not quite formal.
Cassie stilled, her weight shifting onto one foot as though to anchor herself. The idea of this place—the remnants of someone else’s life—feeling lived in was strange, almost laughable. Especially by her. It wasn’t hers, for starters.
“Borrowed,” she corrected, “It’s borrowed.”
Declan’s mouth curved weakly—not quite a smile, more of a quiet acknowledgment. He said nothing at first, letting the moment breathe. The hum of the overhead light filled the silence, a sound she hadn’t noticed until now.
“What brings you here, Mr. O’Hara?” she asked, crossing her arms.
Her words came sharper now, an effort to push through the strange atmosphere he seemed to carry with him. The air felt electrical in his presence, as though the room itself had to adjust to accommodate him.
“I told you,” he replied, meeting her eyes with a calm intensity, “Your broadcast made an impression.”
The way he said it gave her pause.
Cassie felt his gaze settle on her as though waiting to see how she’d react. She took a slow breath, her fingers curling into the fabric of her sweater.
“And that’s enough to knock on someone’s door unannounced?”
“Sometimes,” he said, with a small shrug that somehow managed not to look dismissive, “Though I’ll admit, it wasn’t just the broadcast.”
Her posture stiffened, “Then what was it?”
Declan stepped closer—not enough to invade her space, but just enough that his presence felt more immediate. The creak of the floorboards under his weight seemed louder than it should have been. His gaze flicked briefly to the papers scattered across the table, her scrawled notes forming a haphazard pile that betrayed the frantic way she’d been grasping for control.
Cassie felt his focus shift back to her. It was deliberate, calculated, and entirely unsettling. She resisted the urge to shrink back. Instead, she stayed rooted where she stood, gripping her sweater tighter.
His hesitation was subtle—so brief she might have missed it if she weren’t watching him so closely.
Declan O’Hara wasn’t someone who hesitated often, she imagined. That thought, more than anything, unsettled her even more.
“You’ve put yourself in a position where people are either going to admire you or come for you,” he said, his voice measured but low enough to make her lean in slightly to hear him.
“Admire me?” she asked dryly, the corner of her mouth quirking upward in a humorless smile, “You think that’s likely?”
Declan’s expression didn’t shift much, but the glint in his eyes pierced as he regarded her. Standing there in the muted glow of her living room, he looked entirely at ease—his posture loose, hands slipping casually into his pockets. Yet, there was a coiled energy to him, like a predator content to observe but ready to strike when necessary.
“Admire you?” His lips curved slightly, not quite a smile but close, “They’d be foolish not to. Anyone paying attention would see you’ve got something most people don’t.”
Cassie blinked at that, thrown for a moment by the unexpected turn. The words weren’t overly complimentary. Still, there was something in how he said them—deliberate and matter-of-fact—that left her feeling exposed.
“Crawford isn’t most people,” she countered, her tone cautious, “And I’m not sure anyone else is paying attention.”
Declan tilted his head slightly, his dark eyes scanning her face as if weighing her words against something he already knew, “Crawford’s watching you. I’d bet more people are too.”
The amusement in his voice hinted at more than what he was saying, but he didn’t elaborate.
Cassie felt a flicker of something sharp and unsettling under his gaze—like he was dissecting her, piecing her together in real time. She crossed her arms over her chest, more for herself than for him, and forced out a brittle laugh to deflect.
“That’s a poetic way of telling me I’ve already lost.”
Declan’s gaze drifted briefly around the room again, his expression unreadable. The warmth of the space contrasted with the calculated intensity he carried with him, making her feel simultaneously guarded and cornered.
When his eyes found her figure again, his voice softened, though it didn’t lose its power.
“You haven’t lost,” he said simply, “but making Crawford an enemy wasn’t smart.”
“Don’t you say it,” Cassie chuckled, “I think that’s pretty obvious.”
“And yet,” he said, his tone as even as ever, “you don’t seem the type to let obvious risks stop you.”
Cassie exhaled sharply, darting her gaze toward the notes scattered across the table—a deliberate escape from the way his presence seemed to charge the air between them.
“Obvious risks don’t bother me,” she replied, “Obvious consequences do.”
His head tilted slightly, the movement small but deliberate, “Is that why you haven’t made the calls yet?”
Her head snapped up, a flicker of irritation flashing in her eyes.
“You’ve been here for all of five minutes, and you think you’ve got me figured out?”
Declan didn’t rise to the bait, his expression remaining frustratingly composed. He let the question linger for a beat before answering.
“I don’t need to figure you out,” he said plainly, “It’s written all over you. You’ve gone through every word you’d say, rehearsed every answer they might give, but the phone’s still on the table.”
Cassie stiffened, her arms crossing tighter over her chest.
“And if it is?” she shot back, her tone defensive but softer, hesitant. Doubt , maybe.
“Then it tells me you’re not ready to decide what matters most,” Declan said, his voice dangerously low, if she wasn’t looking at his feet, she would be sure he had whispered in her ear.
Cassie felt the words hit their mark before she could deflect. It wasn’t just what he said but the way he said it, like he wasn’t trying to convince her of anything, merely stating the obvious. The restraint in his tone grated at her more than a lecture ever could.
“I’m not sure that’s any of your business,” she shot back, but the bite in her words was dulled by hesitation, “I didn’t ask you to come here and give me advice last time I checked.”
Declan didn’t step back. If anything, his presence seemed more focused, more intentional. He had a way of occupying space without crowding it, though it didn’t stop Cassie from feeling scrutinized under his gaze. His fingers brushed the edge of another page on the table, the smallest of gestures, yet it felt charged.
“Maybe not,” he admitted, the hint of a shrug in his shoulders, “But you’re the one who put your voice out there for the world to hear. That’s not the move of someone afraid to make a decision.”
Her chest tightened at the subtle jab, even though she knew it wasn’t meant to be cruel. Cassie uncrossed her arms, only to realize she had no idea what to do with her hands. They hovered awkwardly for a moment before she shoved them into the pockets of her sweater.
“I didn’t exactly have a choice,” she muttered, her gaze dropping to the scrawled notes on the table, “It was either speak up or keep quiet and let him win.”
“I noticed,” Declan said, his voice cutting through the air with deliberate clarity, “And for what it’s worth—you didn’t waste a single word. Your broadcast wasn’t just speaking up. It was precision. You wielded those words like a scalpel, cutting exactly where it needed to hurt.”
There was something in the way he said it—calm, matter-of-fact—that made her dizzy. The sincerity in his tone was disarming, but there was weight to it that felt impossible to carry. Her breath hitched involuntarily, her fingers curling deeper into the fabric of her sweater as though she could steady herself against it.
“You make it sound like I had thought about what I would say before I broke in Dan’s show. Maybe in my shows, yes, but not yesterday,” she muttered, her voice quiet, “ It wasn’t. I didn’t plan for any of this.”
Declan didn’t look away, his attention anchored to her with unnerving steadiness.
“Maybe not consciously,” he allowed, leaning back slightly but still holding her in his focus, “But it’s in how you speak—every pause, every shift in tone. It’s not accidental. It’s instinct, you have a gift.”
Cassie felt the words swirl in her chest, a strange mixture of unease and something she couldn’t quite name. Gratitude? Validation? She wasn’t sure, but it unsettled her all the same.
She huffed quietly, her eyes darting toward the window. The sheer curtains filtered the outside light, casting soft patterns on the walls. It was the kind of view that might have once soothed her, but right now, the delicate glow did nothing to ease the unease thrumming beneath her skin.
“You say that like it’s so simple,” she muttered, her voice tight, “Like gifts or instincts are enough to untangle all of this.”
Declan didn’t rush to respond, his silence deliberate. It wasn’t a silence that pressed or demanded—it allowed her words to sit. He moved, finally, his hand brushing against her notes scattered haphazardly, almost grasping at them.
“You’re not giving yourself enough credit,” he said, “You didn’t just call out Crawford. You made people listen. That’s what scares him, or anyone really.”
Cassie’s fingers twitched at his words, biting her cheeks. She didn’t want to meet his eyes, but her gaze betrayed her, flicking up to find him watching her with that unrelenting steadiness.
Soon, she looked away again.
“I wasn’t trying to scare anyone,” she murmured, barely audible, “I just… Couldn’t let him get away with it.”
Declan’s lips twitched into something resembling a smile, though it didn’t reach his eyes.
“Exactly,” he said, “And that’s the kind of drive we need on Venturer.”
Her breath caught, and the tension in her chest tightened like a coil.
That was what he had come to ask.
Cassie’s hands tightened into fists against her sides, her nails biting into her palms. The air in the room felt dense, not from the warmth of the radiator or the faint aroma of tea and ink, but from Declan’s words lingering in the air like a challenge she wasn’t ready to face.
“I can’t,” she said quickly, shaking her head, “I’m not made for that. I already told my uncle—”
“Freddie understands,” Declan interjected smoothly, “But I don’t think you do.”
Cassie stiffened, her shoulders rising defensively.
“I know exactly what I can and can’t do,” she snapped, “And I’m telling you: I can’t do that .”
Declan’s presence felt suffocating in its quiet intensity. The room seemed smaller with him in it, every detail sharper and more vivid under his gaze. The cold wind blowing, the soft tick of the clock on the wall—it all pressed against her, amplifying doubts swirling inside her.
How could she explain it to him, this bone-deep dread that came with the idea of being seen? Not just seen, but scrutinized, judged .
Being a voice on the airwaves had given her a layer of protection—a wall between herself and the people who listened. They could hear her passion, her anger, her conviction, but they couldn’t see the fear that sometimes gripped her chest like a vice.
They couldn’t look at her eyes and see what she truly was: a young woman afraid of every step she took.
The thought of standing in front of a camera, her face projected into thousands of homes, made her stomach churn. Every slip of the tongue, every stutter or hesitation, would be magnified a hundredfold. She wasn’t built for that kind of exposure.
“I can’t,” she said again, though her voice sounded weaker this time, frayed at the edges.
Declan didn’t move, didn’t blink. His stillness was maddening.
“Why not?” he asked, his tone a mix of curiosity and that bloody sharpness again, something that cut straight to the heart of her defenses.
Cassie inhaled deeply, trying to quell the rising panic that threatened to choke her. Her gaze flickered across the room, seeking an escape, but there was none—not from him, not from the truth he was pushing her to confront.
“You don’t get it, Mr. O’Hara,” she said, her voice breaking slightly, “It’s not about not wanting recognition or having people listen to me. It’s about...” She trailed off, searching for the words that always seemed to slip through her fingers when she needed them most, “It’s about what happens when they don’t like what they see.”
Declan frowned, leaning forward, “What do you mean?”
Her chest ached as she struggled to articulate the knot of fear and self-doubt that had been her constant companion for as long as she could remember.
“You think it’s just about standing in front of a camera and telling the truth,” she said bitterly, her eyes hardening as she looked at the points of his shoes, “But it’s not . It’s about what happens afterward—when they pick apart every word you said, every expression you made, every tiny flaw you didn’t even realize you had. When they decide who you are based on nothing but a frozen image on a screen.”
Declan’s expression didn’t change, but his eyes softened slightly, a flicker of understanding passing through them.
“Cassie,” he said, his voice quieter now, “You’ve already faced that. Every time you went on air, every time you published a story. The only difference is, you couldn’t see it happening.”
Cassie’s heart pounded in her chest as Declan’s words hung in the air, each one heavy with intent. He spoke with a calm certainty that made her defenses feel paper-thin.
“I read about your work,” he began, his tone carefully measured, “I’ve listened to the records of your broadcasts. I’ve read the pieces you wrote in Chicago. And I know one thing for certain: you’re not the kind of person who hides behind a mic because she’s afraid. You do it because it’s efficient. Effective .”
Cassie stared at him immediately, her breath catching as the implication of his statement hit her. Her lips parted to respond, but no words came. She felt a strange dizziness, as if the walls of the room had tilted slightly, throwing her off balance.
How?
How could he have done all that in the span of a day ?
He had to have sought out recordings, dug through archives, tracked down articles she hadn’t thought about in years. From yesterday to now, he had made it his mission to know her, to understand her work, her voice.
It was unsettling.
It was…
“Every single one of them had one thing in common,” Declan continued, his tone softening, though his intensity never wavered.
Cassie raised her head, her brow furrowing as she finally managed to find her voice, “What’s that?”
“ You ,” he said, leaning forward again, his eyes never leaving her figure, constantly searching for her eyes, “Your voice, your perspective. You didn’t just report the facts—you made people care about them. You made them feel it. That’s not something everyone can do.”
The sincerity in his tone cut through her like a knife, carving through the doubt she had clung to for so long. She didn’t know how to respond, so she didn’t.
She didn’t know how to respond, so she didn’t.
Her fingers, still restless, searched for shelter in the fabric of her sweater. The tension in her body refused to ease, the heat creeping up her neck to her cheeks as she processed his gaze—so unwavering, so certain.
“You think being in front of a camera changes that?” he asked, his gaze unwavering, “It doesn’t. If anything, it amplifies it. People don’t connect to perfection—they connect to authenticity. And you, Cassie, are as authentic as it gets.”
The heat crept up her neck, spreading to her cheeks. She could feel it—a flush that she couldn’t suppress, a reaction she couldn’t control. She wanted to blame the intensity of the conversation, but deep down, she knew it was more than that.
There was something in the way he looked at her—unwavering, searching. His eyes, dark and steady, seemed to hold a flicker of something she couldn’t quite place. Admiration? Curiosity?
The corners of his lips lifted, not into a full smile, but a subtle quirk that softened the sharpness of his features. He was close—closer than he needed to be—and she couldn’t decide if it was intentional or just a consequence of his presence.
Her hands fidgeted in the fabric of her sweater again, twisting it as she fought to regain her composure.
“You’re giving me too much credit,” she said finally, her voice quieter now, almost hesitant.
“I don’t think I am,” Declan replied, “If anything, I’m not giving you enough.”
The words struck her like a blow, cutting through the haze of self-doubt that had wrapped itself around her once and for all. For a moment, she thought she was dreaming.
The air between them felt charged, electric in a way that was both thrilling and terrifying. Cassie couldn’t remember the last time someone had spoken to her like this—not with flattery, but with belief.
Her gaze darted to the window again. The pale light filtering through the sheer curtains softened the room's edges but did nothing to dull the sharp edge of Declan’s words. Outside, the distant sound of birdsong felt muted against the tension humming in the room.
Her mind raced, spiraling as it tried to keep up with the emotions swirling inside her. The compliments, the conviction in his voice—it was too much, too fast. She felt like she was teetering on the edge of a precipice, unsure whether to jump or cling to the safety of the ground beneath her feet.
“You don’t know me,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper, “Not really.”
“I know that you’re holding yourself back,” Declan countered.
She shook her head, frustration bubbling to the surface.
“You make it sound so easy,” she muttered, “Like all I have to do is step in front of a camera and everything will fall into place.”
Declan’s expression shifted, softening in a way that made her chest tighten.
“It’s not about it being easy,” he said, his voice quieter now, almost gentle, “It’s about it being worth it.”
Cassie blinked, thrown off balance by the simplicity of his response.
“I’ve been where you are,” Declan continued, “Afraid of what people might see, what they might say. But here’s the thing: it’s not about you. It’s about the story. It’s about what you’re trying to show them, the truth you’re trying to tell.”
His words landed heavily, resonating with something deep inside her. She faltered, her gaze dropping back to her hands. Her fingers trembled slightly, and she clenched them back to her sweater to steady herself.
“You’re talented, Cassie,” Declan said, his voice gaining a firmer edge, “You’re good . You have a way of making people listen—not just to the facts, but to what they mean. We could give you a show, a platform where you can do exactly what you said yesterday: pull back the rug and show people what’s been swept under it.”
He paused, letting the words sink in before adding, “But if you’re not ready to take that jump, then tell me— what do you want to do next? ”
Cassie’s heart hammered in her chest. His words pressed against her like the weight of the world, a challenge, an invitation, all rolled into one. Beneath the pressure, there was a flicker of something she hadn’t felt in a long time: possibility. It was a thought she couldn't shake—the idea of not just telling the truth, but having the power to shape the conversation, to expose the darkness hiding in plain sight.
What would she do next ?
For the first time, the idea didn’t feel impossible. It felt terrifying, yes , but there was a spark of curiosity beneath the fear—a small, stubborn part of her that wanted to know if she could.
Her breath hitched as she looked back at Declan, his gaze steady. Not leaving her sight, not for once.
“I’ll have to think about it,” she took the courage to say it out loud.
Declan’s lips curved into a smile, one that didn’t feel triumphant but rather understanding.
“I’ll wait,” he said, and she believed in him.
Cassie hesitated, her fingers twisting the hem of her sweater as a new thought occurred to her. She glanced at him, her brow furrowing slightly.
“Can I ask you something?”.
“Of course,” he replied immediately.
“Why me?” she asked, her words laced with genuine confusion, “There are dozens of people out there trying to make noise, trying to be heard. What was so special about what I did yesterday?”
Declan’s smile deepened, but there was something else in his expression—a flicker of something warm, almost unspoken.
“It wasn’t just what you did yesterday,” he said, his tone quieter now, more intimate, “It was the way you did it. The way you made people stop and listen. You didn’t just speak—you cut through . You made them care. That’s not something you see every day.”
His gaze lingered on hers, steady and searching, and for a moment, the room felt smaller, the space between them charged with something she couldn’t name.
But, despite it feeling small… That was one of the few times that looking into someone’s eyes didn’t make her feel like drowning. Not in a hurtful way.
“You’re different, Cassie,” Declan continued, “And that scares people like Crawford. It’s also what makes you impossible to ignore. I had heard today some people are already calling you ‘Bloody Harrier’, and I don’t disagree with them, you are a harrier.”
Cassie swallowed hard, her thoughts swirling like a storm. She didn’t know how to respond, didn’t know what to say. All she could do was nod, his words settling heavily in her chest as she tried to make sense of the possibilities now laid before her.
"That’s kind coming from someone like you,” Cassie muttered, her voice laced with skepticism, “But I don’t feel like a harrier .”
Declan’s eyes softened, a quiet understanding passing between them, “That’s because you don’t see yourself the way others do.”
The room seemed to hold its breath as his words lingered in the space between them.
Outside, the breeze rustled the leaves against the windowpane, its soft whisper contrasting with the quiet tension in the room. It wasn’t uncomfortable, though—it was waiting, expectant, as if the world was on pause, waiting for Cassie to choose whether to step forward or remain where she was.
Cassie’s gaze flickered back to him, and for a fleeting moment, the rest of the world seemed to vanish. And in that moment, she became acutely aware of how close he was. His presence, which had always been intense since he had knocked at her door, now felt almost overwhelming.
She noticed the sharp angles of his jaw, the way his lips were slightly parted as he spoke, the faintest trace of stubble that caught the light. The dim afternoon glow from the window washed over his features, softening them in a way that made everything about him seem impossibly magnetic.
It was a fleeting moment, but she felt it, that subtle charge in the air. Something unspoken, something she couldn't put into words, hanging there between them.
For a moment, Declan didn’t speak. He stood still, his gaze steady, as if he too was aware of the proximity. The air seemed to crackle, the space between them shrinking, until finally, with a slight but noticeable shift in his posture, Declan took a step back, breaking the tension.
His eyes never left hers, though, and the understanding between them lingered in the silence.
"Do you really believe that?" Cassie asked, her voice smaller, almost a whisper.
“I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t, would I?” Declan asked her back.
The room felt heavy after Declan’s words, his presence an anchor pulling at Cassie’s thoughts. She didn’t know what to say, and for once, she didn’t try to fill the silence. It stretched between them, thick and charged, her fingers twisting the hem of her sweater in a futile attempt to ground herself.
Declan’s gaze stayed fixed on her. It wasn’t harsh or prying, but steady, as though he were trying to understand something about her that she hadn’t figured out herself. That quiet intensity unsettled her, a reminder of the kind of man he was—one who didn’t miss the small things, who didn’t let truths slip away unnoticed.
“I should go,” he said, breaking the silence himself. His voice low, almost hesitant, as if leaving wasn’t entirely what he wanted.
Cassie widened her eyes, startled by the shift in the moment. She stepped back slightly, creating a sliver of space between them, though it did nothing to untangle the knot tightening in her chest.
“Right,” she replied, the word coming out too quickly, sharper than she intended, “ Of course. ”
Declan moved toward the door, his steps well measured. He didn’t rush, as though each movement was a chance to reconsider something left unsaid. The air between them felt different now, lighter in some ways but heavy with the lingering weight of their exchange.
When he reached the door, he paused. He turned back, his posture relaxed but his expression still thoughtful.
The dim light coming through the window outlined the sharp edges of his features perfectly, it made him seem less imposing, more human .
“It was good meeting you,” he said, “I wish it had happened sooner.”
His words weren’t dramatic, but they hit somewhere deep, somewhere she didn’t know was vulnerable until now. For a moment, she didn’t respond, unsure of what to say or how to untangle the emotions his presence had stirred.
“Yeah,” she said, her words almost fragile, as if they could break in any second, “Me too.”
Declan’s lips curved into a smile—not the polished, performative kind she’d seen on screens, but something smaller, more genuine.
“Maybe it would’ve made things… Simpler,” he added, his tone light, though his words carried more meaning than they seemed to.
Cassie nodded, unsure how to respond to that . Her thoughts felt tangled, a mess of emotions she didn’t want to unravel just yet.
The least she could do was open the door for him, letting the cold evening air rush in. It swept past her, bracing and sharp, clearing the fog in her mind just enough to remind her where she was. She stepped closer to the doorway, watching as he descended the steps with the same calm confidence he carried everywhere.
At the edge of the porch, he turned back briefly. His dark coat blended with the gray evening, but his eyes caught hers one last time.
“Take care of yourself, Cassie,” he said, his voice warm and familiar, as though he had always known her.
“You too,” she replied, the words barely audible but sincere, “Mr. O’Hara.”
“Please,“ his smile widened, “Call me Declan.”
She didn’t respond immediately, her lips parting as if to say something, but nothing came. Instead, she nodded, her fingers gripping the door for balance.
“Declan ,” she said, the name feeling foreign on her tongue, heavier than it should have been.
The moment lingered settled between them, neither of them seeming in a hurry to break it. Cassie could feel his gaze, the way it softened now, lacking the intensity he’d carried earlier. It made her chest feel tight, but not in the way she was used to.
This wasn’t the suffocating pressure of fear or failure—it was something else, something unfamiliar and unsettling.
Declan glanced past her, his eyes briefly scanning the quiet house behind her. The mess of papers on the table, the dim glow of the single lamp in the corner—it was all so distinctly her, chaotic yet purposeful.
His lips twitched, almost imperceptibly, as though he was about to say more, but then he stepped back, the moment slipping away.
“Goodbye,” he said one more time.
She stayed in the doorway as he walked to his car. The gravel crunched softly under his feet, the sound carrying in the quiet dusk. He opened the driver’s side door, pausing for just a moment before getting in. The headlights flared to life, cutting through the fading light as he started the engine.
Cassie watched as he pulled out of the driveway, the rumble of the car fading as he disappeared down the road. She stayed there long after he was gone, the cold creeping up her arms, her heart still beating a little faster than normal.
When she finally stepped back inside, the warmth of the house felt strange, as though she’d been away for longer than just a moment. She leaned against the door, letting out a slow breath, her thoughts still circling the man who had just left.
Her eyes drifted to the phone on the corner of the room. The list of names was still on her table, waiting for her to take the next step.
For a brief moment, she considered picking up the receiver, calling Sarah, or anyone on that list. But the weight of the decision held her back, the fear of failure keeping her frozen in place.
Declan’s words echoed in her mind: “You made people care.”
She didn’t know if she believed it. Not yet. But the thought lingered, and for now, that was enough.
Enough for her to go to the damn rotary phone and start making her calls.
Rutshire Gazette
Local Radio Dispute Sparks Drama at Crawford’s FM
By Edward Hill
In an unexpected twist during yesterday’s live broadcast, Cassandra Jones, a presenter at Crawford’s FM, took to the airwaves with allegations against station owner Charles Crawford.
Ms. Jones, who recently returned to Rutshire after spending much of her career in Chicago, accused Mr. Crawford of suppressing critical stories in favor of lighter, more commercially viable programming.
Eyewitnesses claim Ms. Jones refused to vacate the studio, reportedly locking herself in for nearly an hour before the police intervened. Sources close to the station describe the incident as “disruptive” and “unprofessional,” with one staff member alleging that Ms. Jones acted “erratically.”
Speaking to the Gazette, Mr. Crawford condemned the incident as a “stunt,” stating: “It’s unfortunate that Ms. Jones felt the need to air grievances in such an inflammatory manner, particularly when we’ve always encouraged an open-door policy for our team. Crawford’s FM prides itself on being a reliable source of entertainment and community news—values clearly lost in Ms. Jones’ actions.”
The details of Ms. Jones’ grievances remain unclear, though snippets from the broadcast suggest dissatisfaction with editorial decisions and claims of mismanagement. The station has confirmed they are pursuing legal action for trespassing and property damage.
Ms. Jones, who was arrested at the scene, declined to comment when approached outside the police station early this morning. However, her outburst has sparked debate among listeners, some of whom have voiced their support. One caller, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Gazette:
"She’s got guts. What she said about the council funds was true. But no one wants to touch it because it’s messy. I say good for her, we need more bloody harriers around here!"
Others, however, have expressed concern over Ms. Jones’ approach, questioning whether such public defiance undermines the credibility of her claims.
For now, the fate of Ms. Jones’ career remains uncertain, with many in the industry speculating whether this incident marks the end of her tenure at Crawford’s FM—or the beginning of something far more contentious.

we shouldn't
declan o'hara x female reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media
summary: you probably shouldn't be stealing glances at your best friend's dad. but you DEFINITELY shouldn't be sitting on a kitchen table with him between your legs.
content: nsfw, 18+, smutty smut smut smut, age gap, best friend's dad just hits different i'm sorry
author's note: i saw a comment that said declan definitely talks you through it and i couldn't agree more. so here we are!
-------------------------------------------------------
You sit stirring the cup of tea in front of you in an effort to keep your hands busy. You had found yourself in your best friend’s kitchen on a Saturday night only she wasn’t home. So instead of spending your evening with her, you were now having a cup of tea with her incredibly dreamy father. Although this was a scenario you had dreamt about, you hadn’t come over here expecting to see Declan.
You were here because Taggie had once marveled over the local produce available at the farmer’s market held in town so you grabbed some earlier that morning with the intention of dropping it at the Priory for her. You knew going into town was a bit of a drive for the O’hara’s and you lived a block away from the market, so it was an easy task for you. You showed up at her front door expecting to hand her a bag full of veggies and were instead met by her brutally handsome father.
You hadn’t lived in town long but from the second you and Taggie met there was an unspoken friendship solidified between the two of you. The bond was most likely due to the fact that you were both twenty-something year old girls in a town full of middle-aged married couples. Nonetheless you enjoyed each other’s company. She taught you how to bake blueberry muffins from scratch and you helped her take a step back from her responsibilities and let loose from time to time. It was a win-win.
What Taggie didn’t know was that you and her father had been shamelessly flirting with each other for weeks.
It started with stolen glances at Declan when he would walk around the house shirtless. His broad shoulders and hair covered chest had you in a trance, so much so that it took you a minute to notice when he caught you staring. Wearing a smug expression he threw you a quick wink before walking out of the room, his small chuckle echoed in his absence and you knew you were fucked.
Ever since that day the two of you shared many coy smirks, crude jokes and light brushes of the hands but nothing beyond that. You couldn’t deny how badly you wanted him. You knew it was wrong to think that way about your best friend’s dad. You knew it but you kept thinking about what he would be like in bed. God- you were such a bad friend.
So now you were sitting in the kitchen of the Priory without Taggie. She had failed to mention that she had a job catering one of Valerie Jones’ parties tonight. Of course, when you realized she wasn’t home you offered to leave the groceries and head back home but Declan insisted on you staying for a cup of tea. You joined him in the kitchen watching his large hands fumble with mugs and tea bags and thinking about other places his rough hands would work well. Jesus you couldn’t even let the man perform a simple task without drooling over him. It would have been ridiculous if it weren’t for the way his lips turned up into a cheeky smile knowing you were watching his every move. The smug bastard knew the ways you thought about him and he relished in it.
“Taggie normally tells me when she has a gig.” You state still stirring your tea.
“This came up last minute” Declan stood at the kitchen counter sipping whiskey, he wasn’t much of a tea guy.
“Even I was surprised. She hasn’t been workin’ weekends as much since you’ve come into the picture” He finishes speaking taking another swig of his drink.
“You’ve somehow done the impossible task of gettin’ that girl out of the house and enjoyin’ her life on Saturday nights. I’ll forever be grateful to you for that.” He raises his drink to you causing a small laugh to leave your lips.
“Yeah well, Taggie’s a good time. I don’t think you give her enough credit” You finally stop messing with the spoon in your hand and take a small sip of the tea in front of you.
“While that may be true, I think you help her come out of her shell. You’re just so-“ he stops and just stares at you for a moment like he’s trying to think of the word he wants to say.
“lively.” He finally says.
you smile at the adjective.
“And vibrant and captivating” He abruptly sets his glass on the countertop and begins slowly walking in your direction.
“You’re absolutely stunnin’, you know that?”
You feel your heart begin to race as he comes to stand in front of you.
“I keep tryin’ to push away the way you make me feel.”
“But it’s impossible to ignore when I walk into a room and immediately feel your presence. So bright and mesmerizing.”
You feel frozen by his words. You’ve played out this exact moment in your head every single night but never imagined it would come to fruition. Now Declan is standing just inches away, the tension palpable.
“Not to mention you’re always fuckin' here.” He waves his hands gesturing to the massive home you’ve both found yourself alone in tonight. “Always around remindin’ me of what I can’t have”
The words barely come out of his mouth before you’re on your feet slinging your arms around his neck and pulling him down to you. His lips crash onto yours and he wastes no time savoring the taste of your lips. His kiss is hungry and methodical, and you think you might melt.
He breaks away for a split second,
“We shouldn’t” he says breathless but then his lips are back on yours in an instant, showing no signs of stopping.
“Declan. Please” You practically beg him to keep kissing you.
It must be the way you say his name because he throws any restraint he previously had out the window. Picking you up and sitting you on the kitchen table in one swift movement.
His hands find their way up your skirt lightly gripping your thighs, his fingertips drawing lazy circles on your skin just inches away from where you really wanted him to touch you.
He leans in close whispering coarsely in your ear
“I’ve dreamt about this.”
The attention of his lips shifts from a soft whisper to a gentle kiss right below your ear.
“Me too” you admit.
Your voice is breathless as he continues placing kisses down your neck every now and again nipping and suckling at the sensitive skin just beneath your jaw.
“Tell me love, what is it you think about?” He says sending sweet vibrations into the crook of your neck.
“Do you think about me touchin’ ya?”
He runs his hands roughly up and down your thighs pushing your skirt up so that it’s bunched at your hips.
“Do you think about how good I could make you feel hmm?”
The words coming out of his mouth have you all but dripping between your thighs. His hands find the hem of your underwear, playing with the material between his fingertips he tugs them down your legs at a painfully slow pace.
He pulls away so his gaze is on yours. Your foreheads meet as his hands find their way back to your thighs, carefully spreading them open just a bit more.
“I think about it constantly”
He takes his time trailing his fingertips up your inner thighs, so gently that the featherlight touch makes you shiver. The corner of his mouth curls into a smile knowing the effect he has on you.
You almost squeal when you feel his pointer finger circling your entrance. He keeps it there, taunting you with anticipation.
“How your cunt would feel wrapped around my fingers”
He lets his digit sink inside you with the slightest pressure. The gentleness of his touch contradicting his dirty words.
Your eyes fall shut and you let out a soft moan of relief.
The sound of pleasure causes him to add another finger. He curls them in just the right way making you grab at his forearm and whimper his name. He keeps playing at the spot that elicited such a strong response from you causing you to squirm in pleasure.
“God you feel s’good. Your pretty little cunt squeezin’ my fingers like that. Can’t imagine how you’d feel on my cock”
You bite back a groan at his words. If he kept talking to you like this, you might cum in record time.
He picks up the pace of his fingers, moving them at a deliciously perfect rhythm. You squeeze your eyes shut focusing on the pressure building in your abdomen.
“Look at me love, I wanna see ya.” His voice is low and rough.
You open your eyes and it takes everything in you not to come undone at the sight. His curls falling in his face, his jaw slack, and his eyes clouded with lust.
“That’s it, s’pretty for me”
You’re putty in his hands at this point, sitting on his kitchen table, legs spread wide, One of his hands on the back of your neck holding you steady the other inside of you.
As if the carefully arched thrusts of his fingers weren’t enough to push you over the edge, he begins gliding his thumb over your clit. The added sensation makes your body jolt and you fight to keep your eyes open.
His movements work together like a perfectly timed symphony and you find yourself reeling closer to the edge of ecstasy. You moan Declan’s name again, an indulgent praise, and he groans in response. You’re so close, the tension in your body is looking for release causing your thighs to clench around Declan.
The fullness of his fingers inside of you and the constant attention on the bundle of nerves between your legs has you seeing stars. But it’s the filthy words he speaks to you that finally finish the job.
“Atta girl.”
“You’re doing s’good”
“Let go for me”
With those words you feel the tightness in your core come undone and let out one final drawn out sound of pleasure. You’re clenching and dripping and heaving and Declan is just staring. Forehead still resting on yours, breathing heavy, he softly smiles and places a gentle kiss on your lips.
It takes a few moments for you to regain some sort of composure and then you finally speak,
“We’re fucked”
“We are so so so fucked, I can’t believe how fucked we are.” You allow your internal dialogue to spill out.
Declan just chuckles darkly.
“Perhaps we are.” He toys with your skirt still gathered at your hips.
“But if we’re goin’ down we might as well have a little more fun.” Chuckling through his words he picks you up off the table so your legs are wrapped around him and begins carrying you upstairs.
“If you thought I was done with ya love, you are sorely mistaken”

died in your arms | declan o'hara x fem!reader
Tumblr media
Summary: It must have been something Declan said. Or done. Maybe both. You'll be dying inside, but at least in his arms.
Word count: 1.3k
Disclaimer: English isn't my first language!
Falling for your boss was a very, very dangerous thing.
Especially when he was older. Married. With a family.
Especially when he had those sad, beautiful eyes.
You could lie to yourself, pretend his gaze lingered on you in a way that was different. Special. Not like you were some naïve girl who’d drop everything for him.
You would, of course.
It was foolish. But foolishness had a way of compelling you. That’s how you found yourself standing outside his house late at night, the cold seeping into your bones. The sound of your restless shifting on the wooden steps could be heard from a mile away.
Taggie’s voice had been trembling when she called. “Can you come? Please?” she’d said, words rushed, and just like that, you were here.
You raised your hand to knock again when the door creaked open. The faint glow of a lamp spilled out, and your chest tightened.
The day had already been chaotic. Declan had swept through the office like a storm. He’d tossed a curt, “I’m taking leave. You should too,” over his shoulder as he walked out. Before you could respond, Tony had strutted in, telling you that Mr. O’Hara’s throwing one of his tantrums again.
He’ll cool off eventually.
“I’m worried about him,” Taggie sighed when she let you in, her words tumbling over each other. “And Mom…” She hesitated, eyes darting away as if she could evade her own thoughts. “Mom doesn’t care.”
“Hey, Tag,” you said gently, wrapping her in a hug she didn’t ask for but desperately needed. “How bad is it?”
“He locked himself in the study to watch that stupid interview with James...”
You crouched to scratch behind Gertrude’s ears.
“Interesting form of punishment,” you’d tried to joke, but the attempt fell flat against the worry etched into her face.
Taggie’s eyes were glassy with unshed tears. “I’m scared this time. Something’s wrong.”
Something was always wrong. Maud cheated. Maud left. Maud returned. Declan picked up the pieces, only to watch her break him again. It was a cycle you’d seen too many times, and yet here you were, stepping into its center.
“It’ll be fine,” you lied, the words tasting fake. “I’ll try to fix it.”
“He’ll listen to you,” Taggie said, her voice almost inaudible. “You’re the only one he listens to.”
And now, as you stood in the threshold of the room, that burden of responsibility weighed heavy on your chest. The study was suffocating. Heavy curtains cloaked the windows, and the faint scent of whiskey hung in the air. Declan lay sprawled on the worn leather couch, his shirt half-unbuttoned.
The flicker of the television bathed his face in pale light. James Vereker’s smug expression visible on the screen, Thatcher’s practiced responses echoing faintly. That was before you came closer and turned it off.
Declan’s bleary eyes slowly turned toward you, the weight of his gaze like a physical touch. He blinked once, twice, as though trying to place you in the haze of his mind.
“Turn it back on,” he rasped, his voice a whisper that scraped against the stillness.
“No chance,” you replied, moving to pull a chair closer to him. “What are you doing to yourself? I wouldn’t let my worst enemy watch that shit, let alone you. Enjoying the torture?”
“Torturing myself has always been my specialty,” he muttered. A bitter smile graced his lips, but his eyes remained dark. “I’m an expert, I’m-”
“You’re drunk,” you observed, your voice firm but soft.
He lifted his glass, swirling the amber liquid with exaggerated care. “And?” he asked, his tone teetering between defiance and despair. “Will you take this from me too, love?”
“I wouldn’t dare,” you said, lips twitching.
He laughed, short and hollow, shaking his head. It was the laugh of a man who’d stopped expecting anything good.
“Why are you here?” he asked, voice low, almost a whisper.
“Taggie called me,” you said simply. “She’s worried about you. And so am I. This interview meant so much to you. And when you left, I could see that...” You hesitated, the words heavy in your throat. “Declan, are you alright?”
His only response was to push himself to his feet. His movements were unsteady, restless, as though he couldn’t bear the weight of standing still. He paced the room with the agitation of a caged animal, his fingers running through his hair, tugging at the strands as if trying to wake himself.
“Leave,” he said finally, his back to you. His voice cracked, fragile. “Please. Just leave. This is torture. Not the interview. You.”
Your breath caught in your throat, but you stayed seated, your gaze steady. “I’ll leave when I know you’re okay,” you said gently. “Right now, you’re just rambling.”
He turned to you then, his expression unreadable, his eyes clouded with something that might have been pain or might have been fear. “Do you want to hear something funny?” he asked, his voice hollow, devoid of humor. “Tony blackmailed me with photos of Maud. You know the kind. Documenting the affair.”
Your throat went dry. You had no idea.
“My hands are tied because of my wife’s betrayal. And oh, how beautifully it’s been photographed,” he laughed bitterly, the sound cutting through the room like a shard of glass. He took another sip of whiskey, the amber liquid trembling slightly in the glass.
“I’m so sorry, I–”
“Of course you’re sorry. With your fucking compassion and damned understanding,” Declan said, his words tumbling out in one breath, raw and jagged. Then, as if the weight of everything became too much, he sank to his knees by the chair where you sat, his presence overwhelming in the confined space. “Maybe that’s why I’ve sinned in my thoughts. Because you’re kind to me.”
Your head was spinning, the walls of the room seeming to close in around you. You looked down at him, the tears that welled in your eyes blurring the edges of his face.
“Declan–” you whispered, your voice unsteady, the name barely making it past your lips.
“Do you think if someone took a photo of me when I look at you,” he began, his voice low and shaking, “they’d have proof of an affair? Because I have so, so many thoughts. And I think you can see them. If you look close enough.”
His fingers brushed your jaw, a touch so soft it felt like it might shatter you. You couldn’t move, couldn’t speak. Your heart raced, the beat of it a deafening drum in your chest.
“You won’t remember this tomorrow,” you whispered, barely able to get the words out. “You’re drunk. You’re married.”
“And you’re good to me. Even though you’re not mine, I feel like I have you, like you’re with me, like you’re for me.”
Then he kissed you. His lips were warm and tasted of whiskey, salt, and something achingly desperate. The kiss was messy, filled with everything he couldn’t say.
And yet you couldn’t tell if he truly meant it. In the way you wanted him to mean it.
That’s why you pushed him away.
“We can’t. Maud–”
“Maud doesn’t give a shit. She has been unfaithful, love. From the very beginning.” His voice cracked, the admission heavy in the air between you.
“So you want to make it even?” you asked, the words sharp despite the tears sliding down your cheeks.
He looked like you’d struck him, his eyes wide, the pain in them unmistakable.
“I don’t want to be some twisted sense of comfort and justice to you, Declan,” you said, standing quickly, the chair scraping against the floor. The movement felt like the only way to keep from breaking entirely. “This means more to me than it does to you. It’s not fair.”
“I’m sorry,” he choked out, rising unsteadily to his feet. His face was pale, his voice thick with emotion. “My sweet girl, I’m so, so sorry.”
When his hand reached up to wipe the tears from your face, you froze. His touch was tender, almost reverent, and it felt like it might undo you entirely.
At that moment, you knew.
You wouldn’t be able to say no to him, no matter what you were to him.
Consolation, revenge, or love.
It didn’t matter, as long as you were something to Declan O’Hara.

Not a Creature Was Stirring

Declan O’Hara x Reader
Words: 2677
Summary: Christmas at the Priory gets more complicated with Maud can’t make it back from London. As Declan’s girlfriend, you try to step in to still make it a perfect holiday for him and his kids. Needless to say, things don’t exactly go according to plan.
Notes: With my love for Aidan Turner, you guys had to know Declan would be joining my list of stories eventually! I love him so much and I’m happy to have him as the subject of my Christmas imagine this year. I hope you all have a happy holidays, whatever you celebrate and a wonderful new year! (and if you recognized the Poldark quote I totally stole, no you didn't)
-
T’was two weeks before Christmas and all through the Priory, everyone buzzed with holiday spirit. Patrick and Caitlin were back from school, Taggie was busy making hors d’oeuvres for all of the holiday parties she’d been hired to cater and you were enjoying a book by the fireplace. The only one who seemed unable to enjoy the season was Declan. He stomped about, going through receipts and orders and cards. His brows furrowed and his mustache curved with the harshness of his frown.
“I can’t make sense of any of this,” he huffed. “Everything from the last ridiculous party she planned and I still don’t know what to do.”
You set your book aside. Even though Declan and Maud were no longer together, you knew her approval still meant a lot to him. That, and now that he was the face of Corinium, he was expected to be a bit of a socialite as well.
“Why doesn’t she plan it herself?” You asked.
He hated getting into the details of these things. As long as there were good drinks and decent music, he seemed happy.
He ran a hand through his dark curls and collapsed onto the sofa beside you.
“Because she won’t get here until Christmas Eve.” Declan blew out a long, tired breath. “And the kids have been hounding me about having something here for weeks. I think they’re too cooped up. Tired of the house. Tired of me.”
Caitlin had complained more than once about her ongoing boredom.
You brought your legs up, draping them over his lap as you turned to face him. His hand found your calf, rubbing circles to soothe both you and himself.
“Why don’t you let me do it?”
“Do what?”
You flicked his arm. “The planning, silly.”
“You want to plan Maud’s party?” He scoffed.
“Sure,” you shrugged. “How hard can it be?”
Declan grinned, snickering.
“What?” You asked.
He just shook his head and kissed your cheek, pulling you closer as he stared into the fire.
-
He’d tried to warn you. From the moment you volunteered to take over, Declan had told you it was not a task for the faint of heart. Especially since you were convinced the party had to be as extravagant and special as Maud’s would be. He wanted to tell you there was nothing to prove. That you didn’t need to dazzle everybody and put on some grand show. But you seemed excited to help, so he didn’t say anything. Besides, it was nice to focus on his work rather than invitations to people he’d rather not have to see more than he already did.
Taggie knocked on the door of his office, apron covered with flour. “Have you seen Y/N?”
Declan glanced up from his papers. Bills he couldn’t pay and assignments he didn’t want.
“She isn’t here?”
Taggie shook her head. “I was going to ask what she wanted me to make for the party.”
They looked at each other for a while until Declan shrugged.
“I have no idea,” he said. “She hasn’t told me anything.”
“You mean you aren’t helping?”
Declan scoffed. “I haven’t exactly had time, Taggie.” He put the papers aside. “And she won’t let me.”
“She won’t let you?”
“No. She won’t let me.”
She sighed. “Reminds me of me.”
Taggie muttered, while it was nice not to be in charge for one, she felt a twinge of guilt thinking of you trying to throw everything together on your own.
“If you find her, tell her I want to talk to her,” Declan said.
Taggie snorted. “Right. Talk.”
“Your sister is rubbing off on you,” Declan groaned. "Run off."
Taggie left snickering.
Declan tried to focus back on his work, but couldn’t. Maybe Taggie was right. Was he expecting too much of you? He wasn’t exactly known for his observation skills when the subject wasn’t an official or celebrity he wanted to tear apart. He didn’t want a whole fuss of a party anyway and now he was letting you bend over backwards to make it happen. He sighed, running a hand down his face. It was too late, of course. Declan knew if he said anything, you would assume you’d done something wrong.
Your current situation did little to help. Having spent the last two hours haggling over second-hand decorations, you still didn’t have enough for both the entry hall and the dining room, not to mention other areas of the house. Plus, you’d need to repaint most of the wooden tree decorations, patch up the banners, and glue the ceramic snowman back together. The rest was a haphazard collection of string lights, ornaments, and brass angels you bartered for a steal. For you, it was enough. But for the O’Hara’s? For Declan?
It was hard not to feel cast into a shadow when his ex was who she was.
“Why couldn’t Maud be a minimalist?” You groaned. Maybe the girls could help you dig up some more decor from storage. Surely they had a snow or two tucked away somewhere.
Stars…
Now that gave you an idea.
-
12 hours. That’s all the time you had left to prep the best Christmas party Declan’s family could have.
No pressure, right?
With the decorations set- you nearly broke your neck putting them up- now all you needed to do was make enough food for all the people you invited. Taggie had offered to help, but you insisted she spend Christmas Eve about town with her siblings. Of course, this left you standing in front of a dozen empty pans and no idea how to fill them.
“How does she do this?” You muttered to yourself, looking over the recipe for the thousandth time. Mince pies, cranberry tarts, figgy pudding… it all could have been delivered, but making it yourself was cheaper. You knew money was tight, not that Declan would ever admit it. So it would be the best- and most affordable- Christmas party.
Declan walked into the kitchen just as you were putting the first round of mini pies in the oven.
“Maud called,” he sighed. He smoothed his wild curls only for them to pop out again. “She can’t make it.”
You almost dropped the pudding. “What?”
“She can’t come home for Christmas.” He tried to keep the frustration out of his voice, but you heard it all the same. “Apparently there’s a big party with lots of directors who might cast her, so she’s staying in London.”
“Oh.” You turned away so he wouldn’t see your face fall. It was silly, really, to be upset. But you hadn’t realized how much you wanted to impress her until now.
“I’m sorry, love.” Declan came up behind you, wrapping his arms around your waist. “I know how much work you’ve put into all this.”
Secretly, a small part of him was relieved, though it was a shame the kids wouldn’t see their mother on Christmas.
Your back stiffened against his chest.
“This is all the more reason to have this magnificent party,” you said, shrugging him away so you could get back to work. “It’ll be good for Patrick and the girls.”
Declan stood to the side, watching fierce determination overtake your features.
He exhaled, surrendering. “Alright, love.”
-
The kitchen smelled like smoke and blackened fruit. Coughing, you pulled the tray of unsalvageable tarts from the oven and set them aside. You’d been so busy finishing up the decorations that you’d forgotten about them entirely. You opened the window despite the chill to let out some of the black clouds and godawful odor.
Just half an hour before guests would start arriving and you’d just ruined half of the desserts. Pouring yourself a glass of whatever was closest, you just hoped they’d be content with free liquor after dinner. Maybe they’d get too drunk to care.
“Are you setting fire to the entire neighborhood, because if so, at least spare my dogs.” A familiar snark sounded from behind you.
“Rupert? What are you doing here this early?” You gasped, wiping your hands on your apron. “Declan hasn’t had enough whiskey to tolerate you yet.”
“Then you should have invited more people,” he teased. Rupert entered the kitchen, leaning on the counter. “Why don’t you have Taggie help you? She’s perfect at this.” The admiration in his voice was hard to miss, but you ignored it.
“Because she deserves to spend Christmas with her family, not stuck in here with me.”
He raised a finger to point out you counted as family, but you interrupted.
“And what do you mean, invite more people?” You put your hands on your hips. “I invited half of the Cotswolds.”
Rupert winced. “Yes, well, that explains this then.” He pulled something from his jacket pocket. A stack of filthy, water-stained envelopes. “I didn’t find them til this morning. Postman must have dropped them in the garden when he got chased off by the dogs.” He handed the ruined invitations over.
You stared at them, a lump forming in your throat.
“You mean… no one is coming?”
“I’m afraid not, darling.” He plucked a not-charred tart from the tray and popped it in his mouth. “But isn’t this better. A more intimate gathering with your mustachioed man?”
You shook your head, running your hand through your hair, breathing starting to pick up.
“Maud is staying in London,” you blurted. “So the family is without their mother for Christmas and I thought I could-”
Replace her by throwing some ridiculous party?” He chuckled. His face fell, however, when he saw your lip quiver. “Darling, you know no one expects you to be Maud, don’t you?”
You looked away.
“Nobody wants that.” He stepped forward. “Y/N, I’m sure they don’t. I’m a little relieved she’s not here, to be honest. She was always a bit much.”
Shaking fingers struggled to untie your apron. You tossed it aside.
“I have to go.” You hurried for the door, grabbing a bottle of wine from the counter.
“Y/N-” He started.
The door slammed shut behind you.
Rupert watched you go, sighed, and stole another tart.
-
As the O’Haras piled into the main hall, Caitlin pinched Taggie’s arm, spotting the Minister of Sport coming out of the kitchen.
“I didn’t know he was coming,” she whispered excitedly, earning a stern glance from their father.
Taggie gulped. “Neither did I.”
Both watched their father put on a tight smile and approach the other man.
“Rupert.”
“Declan.” Rupert’s smile was genuine, if not a bit arrogant. “I’m afraid I’ve been the bearer of bad news to your lovely Y/N,” he said. “All her invitations were lost to my flower bushes, left undelivered.”
“So there’s no one coming?” Patrick frowned. He’d hoped to meet some of his father’s good-looking TV hostess coworkers.
“First mummy, now the whole town. Whatever will we do?” Caitlin said, eying Taggie and scooching her forward. When that didn’t work, she poked her brother. “Patrick scared them off with his terrible poetry.”
Patrick rustled her hair, making her squeak in protest.
Declan ignored them. He ran a hand down his face and looked around at all you’d set up. You hadn’t even gotten to turn the lights on.
“She seemed rather upset,” Rupert said, noticing Declan’s concern. “Ran off into the night. Very dramatic.” He leaned forward. “Perhaps you should go find her, hm?” He gave him a knowing look.
Declan’s heart sank. He knew this wasn’t about the party. Not really. He just wished he’d realized it sooner. And before Rupert Campell-Black.
Starting for the door, he stopped, grabbing Rupert’s arm.
“Don’t-” He narrowed his eyes, “-touch anything.”
He hurried off.
Rupert turned to the remaining O’Haras.
“So,” he clapped his hands together. “Who knows where Declan keeps his best scotch?”
-
He found you sitting on a snowy stump at the edge of the property. Declan watched the deep, shimmering green fabric of your dress sparkle in the moonlight, shifting as you lifted the bottle to your lips. You didn’t seem to see him approaching, eyes trained at the stars.
“You look-” He sat beside you and kissed your cheek, “beautiful.”
“I don’t feel beautiful,” you muttered, taking another swig. The wine stained your lips a reddish purple but you didn’t care. Nobody would see it anyway. “I failed, Declan.”
“You didn’t fail.”
You scoffed. “The dessert is burnt, the decorations are literally hanging by a thread, and- oh yeah- none of it matters because no one is coming.” You raised your arm for another drink, but Declan grabbed the bottle, bringing it to his lips instead.
Despite your efforts, your lip trembled.
“I just wanted your family to have the perfect Christmas,” you said.
“Is that what you think I care about?” He asked. “The extravagant party? The guests lined up down the pather?” Declan took your hands in his, trying to warm them from the chill. “Y/N, you’ve gotten me to look forward to a holiday for the first time in ages.” He brought your hands up for a lingering kiss. “Just by being you.”
Your shaking stopped, tears chased away by his soft smile. You snatched the bottle back.
“Flattering will hardly make me feel better, Mr. O’Hara,” you teased.
He raised a brown and leaned forward.
“Does this?” He kissed your lips. “Or this?” Your jaw. “Or maybe…” The spot behind your ear.
“Declan,” you breathed.
He kept his lips by your ear, whispering. “You don’t have to be any more than you are, to be enough for me.”
Now, your tears returned for a different reason. Throwing your arms around him, you crashed your lips into his, forgetting what you’d been so upset about. Your hands found his hair, tangling those perfect black curls around your fingers. He reached one hand around you to hold you closer while the other rested on your thigh, creeping ever upwards.
“If nobody is coming, can we start to eat?” Patrick called out over the lawn, making you jolt apart.
You bit back a laugh, Declan’s face turning pink. “Go ahead!”
“Little bastard couldn’t wait ten more minutes?” Your frustrated boyfriend whined.
“Ten minutes?” You stood, holding out your hand to help him.
Declan pinched your upper thigh and scooped you up, both actions eliciting a squeal from your lips as he carried you back.
-
“Ready?”
“Yes!” They all cheered, impatient.
You giggled, holding the switch captive in your hand. “You don’t look ready.”
“Get on with it, Y/N,” Caitlin whined, “turn them on!”
A chorus of pleas joined her. Declan just laughed, giving you a wide grin.
“You heard them,” he said.
“Alright, alright.”
You flipped the switch. All at once, the main hall lit up, and not just around the tree. Lights strung up above their heads created a canopy of color. Rupert turned on the speakers, filling the space with music. Exclamations of awe and excitement sounded all around you.
“Come on,” Caitlin said, dragging her siblings out to dance with her. Taggie glanced at Rupert, blush flooding her cheeks. He simply motioned for her to go on and dance.
Declan grabbed your hand.
“It’s perfect.” He kissed you deeply, making your knees weak as though he held you up in his embrace.
Caitlin made a teasing sound of disgust, but Taggie couldn’t help but smile. She didn’t think she’d ever seen her father so happy.
Rupert leaned over to you as he strutted to join the others.
“Told you so,” he whispered. You reached to smack him, but he shimmied out of the way.
“Told you what?” Declan asked.
You curled a black strand around your finger.
“That I didn’t have to prove something to be loved by you.”
He pressed a kiss to your palm.
“For once, Rupert and I agree.” He lead you out to dance, swaying slowly despite the cheesy song.
“Merry Christmas, Declan.” You kissed him again, nuzzling closer.
“Merry Christmas, my love.”
And so you all spent Christmas dancing to overplayed tunes under flashy, colorful lights.
And it was perfect.

This one is my Ficmas gift to myself 🥰
Somewhat a continuation of Sweat
From the prompt: an unexpected meeting at a carol service.
Declan O'Hara x F!Reader - warnings inc age gap (reader is presumed over 21), semi-public oral sex... in a church. Yep. If that's likely to offend, maybe steer clear 😅

the soul felt its worth
Things had cooled off as summer had rolled into autumn. Maud had returned from London, her play had received poor reviews and she'd marched back to the Priory as if she'd never been gone.
The mood had changed for the worse. Your Venturer meetings had gone from bristling with excitement to quiet and tense.
Declan had put his efforts into salvaging their marriage and you'd had to carry on with your job as if he hadn't broken your heart.
For weeks, you'd left the room as he entered, you sat on the outskirts of meetings and didn't speak to him unless it was necessary.
You'd made sure your work hadn't suffered in the aftermath. You met every deadline, every request was catered for.
And then Maud had left again. After a blazing row, Declan had been the one to tell her to leave. Brought to the brink, his children neglected, and on the receiving end of every criticism Maud raised, he had enough.
She'd snapped at Taggie for signing a consent form for Caitlin's school - something she'd been doing in her mother's absence, something Declan had no issue with.
“You've no wish to be a mother, Maud. Or a wife. You never have. You came back out of convenience.” He'd said sadly.
She was gone before lunch.
Declan had turned to the bottle - again - drinking more than ever.
A week before Christmas, Taggie had tearfully demanded that he come back to them.
She hosted a Venturer Christmas party, proving to him how much they all loved him, how much they needed him.
Rupert had pulled out his Santa costume and literally dragged Declan onto his lap, giving him a full lecture on being a good boy.
By Christmas eve, Taggie was proudly reporting that her dad was back.
You stood alongside the rest of the Venturer team, the carol sheet gripped in your hands. You saw him sneak in late, right behind Taggie and Caitlin.
Your voice faltered briefly at the sight of him, hovering behind his children, but you quickly regained your composure and continued singing with the group. The coldness between you two was palpable, and yet, there was an undeniable tension in the air, as if the universe had conspired to bring you together once more.
He slid into the pew behind you, Taggie, ever the observant one, reached out to squeeze your elbow in greeting. You nodded back at her, unable to hide the slight shiver that ran down your spine, feeling the proximity of his presence.
The distance between you seemed both vast and dangerously close all at once.
Your body betrayed you, as a wave of desire coiled deep in your belly, despite your mind stubbornly clinging to the hurt and anger from the breakup and his behaviour afterwards. The sight of him, so close yet so far, stirred a conflicting torrent of emotions within you.
From your position halfway down the aisle, you could see Lizzie. Across the other side, Tony shot daggers at Rupert who stood alongside Bas.
Monica gave you a little wave from the front row, beckoning you forward. Your big solo. you slipped past Seb and the others, making your way to the front of the church.
"And now, ladies and gentlemen, we have our first soloist of the evening." Fear took a cold grip of you, you could just about hear Taggie wolf whistling over the sound of your blood roaring in your ears.
As you approached the front of the church, a mix of nerves and excitement coursed through you.
The pianist turned their sheet music to the tune of "O Holy Night," and the hauntingly beautiful melody filled the church, setting the stage for your solo. Your mind raced, as the music echoed through the church.
"O holy night, the stars are brightly shining;
It is the night of the dear Savior’s birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth."
Your voice wavered slightly as you sang the opening lines, finding solace in keeping your gaze steadily on Taggie's right shoulder, just a tiny shift away from gazing directly at Declan.
With a small shift, you allowed yourself a brief glance around the church. You saw Freddie beaming at you, Caitlin open mouthed in shock and nudging her brother.
You paused briefly as you reached Declan. To your surprise, you found him watching you with an expression of wonder written all over his face. His gaze was intense, almost reverential, and the sight made something flutter in your chest.
You hit the final high note with relative comfort and finish the carol. The village cheers you enthusiastically and as you return to your pew, Lizzie is there with welcoming arms. Freddie claps you on the back so heartily you almost fall forwards, his enthusiasm bubbling over. You accept their congratulations with a warm smile, but a part of you remains aware of the weight of Declan's gaze still lingering on you.
From their row behind yours, Taggie pulls you against her chest, her slim arms wrapped around your middle and her chin resting on your shoulders.
She whispers into your ear, "That was beautiful..." Her words hung in the air, sincere and heartfelt, further adding to the mixture of emotions churning within you.
Finally, unable to bear the weight of Declan's constant gaze, you make your way past Seb once more, who playfully teases, "Another solo?"
You flash a smile and murmur, "I just need some air," as you slip away from the group. You find a spot near the far wall, away from the crowded pews, seeking relief from the tension in the air.
You focus your attention on the bulletin board, reading the church announcements, hoping it will help calm the rapid drumming of your heart. The words blur together as your mind struggles to find respite from the whirlwind of emotions swirling inside you.
"I'd no idea you could sing," he murmured quietly from behind you.
His soft voice, suddenly so close, sent a jolt through your body, causing you to nearly jump out of your skin.
Turning to face him, you reply, "And I had no idea you were such a sneak.”
Catching a glimpse of the unsuspecting guests engrossed in their own conversations, you can't help but notice how natural it looks for the two of you to be engaged in a conversation.
No one seems to be paying attention, allowing a moment of relative privacy in the midst of the festivities.
Declan's intense gaze pierces through you as he utters, "Can I talk to you?"
Your initial response is laced with uncertainty as you ask, "here?"
Your surroundings, still filled with the hum of the carolling and the chatter of the guests, seem both intimate and risky at the same time.
Understanding your hesitation, Declan gestures towards the two narrow confessional booth doors behind you.
His gaze remains fixed on your face, silently pleading for you to follow him inside.
The weight of his request hangs in the air, and the idea of sequestering yourselves together in such a confined space sends a shiver down your spine.
With a bit of maneuvering, you both manage to squeeze yourselves into the tight booth. The space is so narrow that you're barely separated by the width of a hymn book.
The proximity is overwhelming, and your every breath is a reminder of how close you are to one another, your bodies gently brushing against one another with each inhale and exhale.
You're close enough to him to pick up the scent of menthol cigarettes and whiskey mixed with the warmth of his breath as it gently drifts over your face. It's an intoxicating mixture that makes your senses spin and your pulse quicken even further. Being this close to him, breathing in his scent, you find yourself torn between wanting to pull away and lean in closer.
Caught in the moment, you notice Declan’s gaze dropping to the deep V-neckline of your dress, as if drawn to the exposed skin. The look in his eyes holds a mixture of desire and uncertainty, mirroring the maelstrom of emotions you're feeling yourself. The tension in the confessional booth is palpable, and you can practically feel the electric energy flowing between you two.
In the hushed atmosphere of the confessional booth, you find the courage to speak up, your voice breaking the silence.
"What do you want, Declan?" Your words hang in the air, and you wonder if he can see the frantic beat of your heart or the quickening rhythm of your breath. The intensity of the moment seems to stretch time itself.
He doesn't say anything in response, but he leans down, cupping your cheek in his large hand.
Caught off guard by his sudden movement, the gesture is both tender and possessive, sending a shiver down your spine at the feel of his palm against your skin.
The silence that follows is deafening, and you can just about hear your own heart stuttering in anticipation.
Your traitorous body arches up towards him, your breathing ragged and needy.
The heat between you two is almost unbearable, and you find yourself struggling to keep control of your rising emotions.
His gaze flicks down to your lips and then back up to lock with your eyes, the intensity in his stare making your breath hitch in your throat. Every nerve ending in your body seems to tingle, as if electricity is crackling through your veins, and all you can do is stand there, frozen, watching him.
In the heat of the moment, it's hard to tell who gives in first. Your arms snake around his broad shoulders, pulling him closer as his lips crash down onto yours. The taste of him is a heady, intoxicating mix of mint and alcohol that sends your senses spiralling. His mouth claims yours with a desperate hunger, as if he's been starving for the taste of you.
His arms tighten around you in a possessive grip, his large hands bunching the material of your dress against your thighs as you instinctively angle your hips towards him.
The thin fabric feels almost non-existent under his touch, and the heat radiating from him is overwhelming.
You can feel the hardness of his body against yours, and it sets every nerve ending in your body ablaze.
His tongue teases the seam of your lips, seeking entry to your mouth, as his hands drift lower, discovering the split in your dress and tracing the edge of your lacy underwear. The touch of his calloused fingers against your skin leaves a trail of fire in their path, sending a shiver of desire through you.
Amidst the heat of the moment, he murmurs with a chuckle, "God forgive me. My mother would turn in her grave," as his hand cups your breast over the fabric of your dress.
The combination of his words and the touch of his hand adds a layer of forbidden pleasure to the already intense situation, making your head spin and your body ache for more.
With a decisive turn, he guides you to sit on the rickety wooden chair, the hardness of the wood digging into your thighs.
He kneels before you, his gaze fixed on your face as he asks with a hint of boldness, "Any sins to confess, love?"
The sudden change in position leaves you feeling exposed, vulnerable, yet at the same time, unbelievably excited.
The feel of his hand slowly trailing up your leg and through the split in your dress is nearly enough to make you gasp aloud. "Any impure thoughts?" he asks, his fingers gently grazing the damp lace between your legs, causing a shudder to run through your body.
The sensations coursing through you are almost too much to bear, and the room seems to be getting hotter by the second.
Despite the fact that your ears can hear the faint singing of the village, your body betrays you, your hips involuntarily bucking towards his hand, seeking more of his touch.
The conflicting sounds create a strange dichotomy; the purity of the church hymn outside compared to the sin of this intimate exchange within the booth.
Under your dress, he hooks his fingers into your underwear and slides them down your legs.
With dexterous ease, he gathers them up and pockets them, a wicked grin spreading across his face.
He then spreads your knees apart, the gesture exposing you to him, vulnerable and ready.
He guides your leg over his shoulder, opening you up widely to him while you position your other for
foot against the woven window of the confessional. The change in angle provides him with a better view and access to you, making your breath catch in your throat.
"I've missed this view," he mutters in a low, almost guttural tone, his eyes locked on your exposed body.
He licks his lips, relishing the sight before him, and there's an undertone of dark need in his voice that makes your skin prickle with heat.
Your words come out as a strained whisper, "Declan… we don't have time for this -" Your mind is reeling, your body aching with need, but the harsh reality of the situation sinks in.
There's no time, no place, for this kind of reckless abandon, and yet the primal lust between the two of you seems almost impossible to resist.
His response is barely above a growl, "I'm gonna make time, love. They'll be singing and chatting for a while yet, plenty of time for me to taste your sweet cunt."
His words send a thrill of anticipation through you, as if the very air between you is crackling with electricity.
With a sense of purpose, he gets to work, his mind set on making the most of the limited time you have together.
Your fingers twist into the thick curls of his hair, instinctively pulling him closer, as your other hand blindly searches for purchase on the smooth wooden wall next to you.
You're practically shaking with anticipation, every muscle in your body taut and on edge, waiting for the feel of his mouth on you.
The moment his tongue makes contact with your sensitive skin, a gasp escapes your lips, your body instantly responding to the gentle touch.
The sensations flood through you like a wave, and your fingers instinctively tighten in his hair as if pleading for more.
He groans into the wet heat of your cunt, the sound of his moan against your sensitive flesh sends ripples of pleasure coursing through your body, the vibration of his voice creating a new kind of sensation that sets your nerves on fire.
Your hand involuntarily tightens in his hair, fingers digging into his scalp in an attempt to anchor yourself to reality.
He works the point of his tongue around your clit, teasing the swollen bundle of nerves.
With his head buried between your thighs, the sound of his breathing is almost as intoxicating as the feel of his tongue against your sensitive core. Your thighs clench involuntarily around his ears, not with the intent to pull him away, but rather to hold him closer, to feel every tiny movement, every breathless gasp.
He uses the flat of his tongue to spread your pussy open, delving it as deeply into you as he can.
The whispered words escape your lips, "God, Declan," as you struggle to hold back the moans threatening to spill from your mouth.
His touch is everywhere, his fingertips holding you against him with an almost possessive grip, grazing across your thighs, your ass, adding to the overwhelming barrage of sensations coursing through your body.
With a trembling hand, you press your fist to your mouth, desperate to stifle the moans that escape you as he continues to drive you out of your mind. The sound of the hymns being sung outside is like a distant, mocking reminder of where you are, adding an element of sin and guilt to the pleasure he's bringing you.
The feel of his long fingers joining the assault on your cunt is almost too much to bear, the dual attack sending you spiralling out of control. You're trembling, on the edge of something monumental, your voice strangled as you try to keep quiet, to not let your gasps spill out into the open church.
His fingers fill you to his knuckles, stretching you, making you desperate to be filled by his cock. He curls them inside you, pumping them in and out while his tongue flicks over your clit.
It's dark in the confessional, the only light filtering through the cutouts in the wood.
You look down to see him gazing up at you, his eyes almost black in the darkness.
It feels like a confession of sorts. A confession that your love for Declan never went away even when he left you to go back to Maud. A confession that you'd been on his mind throughout their torrid reconciliation.
With every breath, every gasp, his name leaves your lips like a prayer, a desperate plea. There's no denying your devotion to him, the way your body responds to his touch, the way your heart beats for him. You're his completely and utterly.
Despite the obstacles that lie ahead - his children, the differences in age - you find yourself caring less and less.
When you're tangled up in his embrace like this, the world outside doesn't matter. All that matters is the overwhelming love you feel for him and the realization that you'd do anything for him.
His tongue delves deep, coaxing more sounds from you, his fingers working in tandem to drive you to the brink.
The intensity of it all is almost unbearable, the pleasure so overwhelming that your legs tremble under him, a visible sign of how he's affecting you. Even through the haze of sensation, you realize that this moment is just the beginning of something much bigger than either of you.
The faint mutterings of the entire village outside the confessional reach your ears, the music beginning to fade, and the sound of talking becoming more prominent.
It's a stark reminder that this stolen moment of bliss has to come to an end. The service is over, and it's only a matter of time before you're discovered.
The danger of being caught somehow makes your approaching orgasm even more intense.
Declan refuses to give up until he's brought you to release. He works your body with his tongue, circling your bundle of nerves until you feel your gut tighten and the walls of your cunt contract around his fingers. You disguise the wail of his name by clamping your hand over your mouth as you climax under his touch.
You try to steady yourself by gently stroking his hair. Your breaths come in deep and shuddering gasps, trying to calm your racing heart. You know that you need to collect yourself quickly before someone discovers you.
With a cheeky smile, he wipes his mouth on your thigh, his moustache scraping against your sensitive skin and leaving a trail of your cum.
With trembling legs and a racing heart, you mutter, "It's finished, we need to move." You breathe, referring to the service. Yet, despite the situation, he responds with a sincere smile, his words sending a shiver down your spine.
He gets to his feet and offers you a hand, his eyes locked on yours. "We're far from finished, love." The determination in his voice is undeniable, the heat in his eyes telling you that he's not done with you yet.
You hold out your palm, a silent demand for your stolen underwear. With a mischievous grin, he innocently shrugs, pretending ignorance. "I don't know what you mean." His eyes are full of playful twinkle, clearly amused by his own little prank.
You adjust your dress, trying to regain some semblance of decency, and roll your eyes at his antics.
You peer through the narrow gap in the door, observing the village filtering out through the main doors.
Your mind racing, you turn to him and give a firm instruction, "Wait for a second before you leave. I'm going to join the crowd."
He nods in agreement, silently acknowledging the plan and waiting patiently for you to make your move.
As you move to open the door, his hand on your hip pulls you back and he dips his head to kiss you.
The taste of your cunt lingers on his tongue, marking your territory.
You lean into him just slightly, your palm covering his racing heart, then you step out into the open and join your friends.
After a few seconds, his presence behind you becomes a steadying force, as he engages jovially in conversation with the unsuspecting vicar.
Lizzie sweeps you into her ongoing conversation with Rupert, who gives you a subtle, knowing look, as if he's aware of what had just transpired in the confessional booth.
"Darling, your hair!" Lizzie chuckles, her observation drawing your attention to your disheveled appearance. "You must have been yanking at it with nerves for your solo. It's all come loose.”
You remove the simple hair clip that barely held your locks in place and set them free, shaking your hair out.
"I was very nervous,” you admit.
Rupert's lascivious grin widens.
"However did you calm down afterwards?" His implication is clear.
"I just stepped away for some air," you tell him firmly, maintaining a neutral expression.
Rupert's grin remains in place as he muses, "I'm sure it was nice to find a... release."
As Declan steps forward, Rupert offers a warm greeting, "Ahh, Mr. O'Hara. Late arrival?" The way he says it seems almost challenging, as if testing Declan's response.
"A little late. Then I helped our soloist here settle her nerves afterwards, we just had a little catch up on work. Back to the Priory for a nightcap?"
He looks around the group, casually inviting you under the pretense of inviting everyone.
Rupert turns to Taggie, his own intentions clear. "Yes, sounds good to me. Tag, angel, do you have any leftovers for us to tuck into?"
Taggie blushes under his gaze.
"I have," she assures him. "Got a bottle of champagne as well?" She turns to you with a grin.
“Well, I'd better come with you, then." You beam at her, appreciative of her invitation.
Walking towards the Priory with the group, Declan falls into step alongside you, his little finger gently brushing against yours. It's a subtle touch, meant to be unnoticed, but sending a thrill through your body nonetheless.
The anticipation builds, the thought of having Declan back in your life, and your bed, exciting you beyond belief. You find yourself unable to keep the grin off your face, your mind filled with thoughts of all the things you want to do with him once you're alone.
“Come on, you,” Lizzie coos, “gosh, you look done in! No more solos for you!”
Behind her, Declan's smirk is unmissable.
