I used the Sears Spring Values catalogue from spring 1978 (It isn't online anywhere as far as I know. I bought it at a garage sale a few years ago for a few bucks and it's very fun to look at)
Little story I wanted to share about Daulton Varsho from the Blue Jays game last night since I doubt it made it into the broadcast but he was very sweet and patient with a little kid :)
Partway through the game the Jays go back out into the field for a new inning. Daulton and George throw a ball back and forth a few times and then right before the inning is supposed to start, Daulton throws the ball to a tiny little kid in the first row behind CF/RF.
The kid catches then drops the ball and it falls back onto the field. Full on slow-mo Simba watching Mufasa fall from the cliff levels of tragedy as the kid outstretches their arms trying to salvage the ball and watching it get away.
Daulton retrieves it and tosses the ball to the kid again. And the kid drops the ball again.
By now Daulton nervously looks over his shoulder to make sure the pitcher isn't waiting for him. He plucks up the ball, runs right to the wall, and gently tosses the ball up again to make sure the kid gets it. Then he rushes over to CF proper as the inning gets going.
I went to the jays game on Saturday with my best friend and got to see Varsho hit a grand slam!! I never would have thought I’d see a grand slam in person so I made this little doodle to commemorate it
