Chapter 6 - The Bard’s Introduction
Part 2
House Anphony and House Mackily, located in northern and western Augustria respectively, ignored Chagall's order and did not deploy any soldiers. Their lords wanted to see the results of the battle between Heirhein and Nordion, then decide what to do from there.
In the meantime, King Macbeth of Anphony ordered his soldiers to dress as thieves, and take advantage of the opportunity to pillage the developing villages in the center region of the country. While the villages were surrounded by forests, the previous king, Imuka, had exempted them from taxation twenty years ago, and were now rich and thriving.
Lewyn heard news of the thieves from the owner of the inn he was staying at.
"They'll be here soon, so don’t stay in bed until noon again today! Hurry and get out of here!" She warned him, then rushed out of the room.
"I should run away, huh…?" Lewyn muttered. He didn’t even try to move from the bed.
He'd lived in the area for about two years as a bard, traveling around the villages and towns playing the kithara. However, he was actually the prince of Silesse, and next in line to inherit the Holy Wind Tome, Forseti...
-
His father, the king, had just passed away, and Lewyn’s Holy Mark had yet to appear. This caused a dispute to break out over who would inherit the throne.
It started with Duke Daccar, the elder of the king's younger brothers, speaking out against Lewyn becoming king, and starting to raise an army at Zaxon Castle. In response, the youngest brother, Duke Maios, set up base at Thove Castle.
Silesse was famous for its pegasus knight army, but even they were split up. Out of the four Angelic Knights, the leaders of the army, the strongest, Pamela, sided with Duke Daccar, and Deetvar sided with Duke Maios, each bringing their subordinates with them.
The remaining two, sisters Mahnya and Erinys, began to prepare for battle.
Lewyn, despite being the central person of the conflict, was the only one who did nothing. He did not return to his castle, Sailane, instead staying at Silesse Castle and doing whatever he pleased.
When his mother, Queen Rahna, could no longer stand it, she brought him to her to scold him.
"If it would avoid a war, I'd gladly give up my right to the throne. I thought my actions were making that clear, but..." At that, Lewyn raised an eyebrow and laughed sarcastically.
"That logic of yours is the cause of all this! The crown is not only your right, but also your duty! If you abandon the crown, you abandon your duty! It is also your duty to behave like a future king. Your uncles think that all you do is play the kithara!"
"Your words hurt me, Mother. But we are descendants of the Wind Crusader. And the defining trait of the wind is freedom. I am poor at living up to both my rights and my duties. And I know that words only hold so much meaning, but I don't just play the kithara."
"I know that very well. But no one else does, so they do not understand. They do not see you study, and think that you only play the kithara and flirt with women."
"You see through everything, Mother… Alright, I'll change my ways. But what should I do? Train for battle with the pegasus knights?"
"You're always so quick to avoid everything! It is your worst trait! ...Anyway, first, you should convince everyone that you do more than just play around. It doesn't matter what you do exactly, just show yourself working hard at something."
"I understand. In other words, you're saying that my duty is to act the part. But what should I do? ...You're the one best at managing politics…"
"I do it because you won't! If you would just step up, then I would leave everything to you!"
"I wasn't being sarcastic! I really meant that! I apologize from the very depths of my heart…"
"Just get back to your castle already! And don't touch your kithara! Properly govern your territory first."
"Yes, Mother." He bowed deeply, then walked away.
He returned to his room, grabbed only his kithara, and left the castle alone.
'I'm sorry to disobey your order, Mother. But I'm pretty sure you didn't literally mean don't touch it. I think you just don’t want me to play it.' He said to himself while laughing sarcastically once more.
To return to Sailane Castle, he had to climb a steep mountain. When he reached the peak, he saw a small unit of pegasus knights flying towards him from the northeast.
'That might be Deetvar's unit.'
The thought crossed his mind that they might lunge at him and attack him, but he didn't think they actually would l. Still, not wanting to risk getting into trouble, he climbed down the mountain a bit, then hid in the bushes.
'They'll probably follow me to the border, then go back.'
However, even once he was clearly in Sailane territory, they did not change their course, rather, they sped up, and started flying straight towards him.
'Of course. There's only one path down the mountain, so their plan is to target me here. Meaning they've been following me since I left Silesse Castle.'
There were four pegasus knights.
'They're attacking me from every angle at once!'
Lewyn stood up, then rushed down the mountain. There were trees just ahead of him. If he could make it to them, at the very least, he could avoid being attacked from behind.
He reached the trees, and stopped to catch his breath.
The pegasus knights had almost caught up.
He prepared to chant a wind spell.
He'd actually never used his magic on a human target before.
'I hope I'm as good in real combat as I am in practice!'
One pegasus knight hovered above him, while the other three split off in separate directions.
Lewyn first looked left and right, confirming that the closest knight to him was the one on the left. Then, cast a spell in that direction.
The gust hit one of the pegasus' wings. The wing twisted and the pegasus fell out of the sky.
Next, he attacked the pegasus knight coming directly at him.
He didn't have the time to confirm whether or not that attack had hit its target, as the knight coming from the right was closing in on him.
He threw himself forward and dodged her lance, but the force sent him rolling down the hill.
'Dammit!'
He knew he had to get up as soon as possible, but he couldn't stop.
Finally, he got caught in a bush, and stopped. He managed to stand, then looked up and saw two pegasi flying away.
He wondered why for a moment, until he noticed another group of pegasus knights coming from the direction of Silesse Castle. They must have seen the enemy unit leaving Thove Castle, and come to his aid.
Lewyn surveyed the aftermath of their battle.
He saw some pegasi lying on the ground nearby. He was certain they were the two who'd tried to attack him from above.
He walked over to them.
The pegasi were all dead, and their riders had been thrown off them, but were still breathing.
He knew every one of their faces.
He didn't remember their names, but they'd always laughed at his jokes.
'So this is what war is like.' He thought.
His reinforcements searched for a place with good footing, then landed.
"Lord Lewyn! Are you alright!?"
He recognized the voice. It was Mahnya's.
"Thank you for coming to save me, Mahnya."
She saw that his hand was covered in blood and rushed up to him. "Oh no, you're hurt! I'll clean it up and…" Her voice shook as she spoke.
Lewyn cut her off. "It's fine, I just scratched it on a tree branch! You can stop!"
"But…"
"It's fine, I promise. What I have to say is far more important. Please listen to me.”
"What is it?"
"I've made a very important decision. I'm going to leave this country. Look at this girl. She was one of our allies, yet now it's come to this. If we go to war, it will be like this for everyone. Even you. I don't want to see that happen."
"But even if you leave the country…"
"This is the only thing I can do to prevent war. The only regret I have is I won't be able to see you."
"Quit joking around...!"
"I'm not joking. I'm the type who can’t speak his mind unless he’s in a situation like this, so, um… I actually... I kinda like you. It's going to be lonely without you."
"Lord Lewyn…"
Mahnya couldn't judge what he was really trying to say, but still couldn't hold back the tears forming in her eyes.
"Please protect my mother. Oh, and take care of the injured."
"You aren't going to talk to Her Majesty before you go…?"
"I can't. If I did, she'd probably chain me to the floor. This is an order. Tell her I made it safely to Sailane Castle and nothing more. Okay?"
"But…"
"Don't say anything further. We cannot allow this country to go to war. If I'm not here, then my uncles will not declare war. That's why I'm leaving. The Prince of Silesse will die."
"..."
"Take care." He showed her a half-smile, then continued traveling down the mountain.
Once he reached the bottom, he avoided Sailane Castle and headed straight for the coast. There, he boarded a fishing boat and left the country.
-
'I don't know if I did the right thing.' Lewyn thought.
As a bard, he'd performed for both nobles and commoners, and that had taught him much about the different lives people led.
Lives he'd never have seen with his own eyes as the prince of Silesse.
'Maybe I was just running away.'
He was right, in that leaving the country meant avoiding war. However, if he thought about it from a perspective other than his own, he began to think that maybe his mother had been right, and he was avoiding his duty.
When he saw the common people living their lives to the fullest, it certainly felt that way.
'Of course, they aren't refined at all, nor do they think very deeply. They’re even deceitful in many ways. Let your guard down, and they’ll take advantage of it in a second. But they’re just trying to live their lives. They don’t stop and smell the roses like I do. They can't afford to. Yet they live their lives to the fullest.'
Lewyn got out of bed and put on his bard clothing.
"Well then, what are you going to do, Lewyn?" He asked himself in the mirror.
"Thieves are attacking the villages. You possess wind magic. And the blue Holy Mark has appeared on your chest. Hasn't everything you should do already been decided for you?"
He climbed down the stairs and didn’t see anyone, so he placed the money for his last night’s stay on the front desk. Then he tried to walk out, when...
"Hey there, Lewyn! We're you gonna go on without me?"
He turned around to see Sylvia, a dancer, coming down the stairs.
"Gah, Sylvia! Ya found me!”
After living for two years as a bard, he’d developed a bit of an accent.
“Aw c’mon, you’re not the type to use people and then toss them aside when you don’t need them anymore!”
“Hey, don’t go shouting out mean things just because no one else is here! We met each other here in this village, and only went out to eat a couple of times! You’re a traveling dancer, and I’m a bard. That’s all there is to our relationship.”
“But you said I’m cute, remember?” Sylvia grabbed Lewyn’s arm with both of her hands. “It… It made me so happy…”
“That’s just what bards say! It didn’t really mean anything…”
She tried to push her breasts together, but only succeeded in bunching up the thin fabric of her top.
“Hey, whoa, don’t do that here! What if someone saw us?”
“Please take me with you! You said thieves are coming this way, didn’t you? And I’m so lonely…”
“Don’t cry. Alright, you can come with me, but don’t run off!”
“So, what’s the plan?”
“We’re going to be fighting, so things are going to get a little rough? Are you ready?”
“Yeah! Actually, I like it rough!”
“Jeez, just a moment ago you were crying, and now you’re laughing. You’re still just a kid, you know that?”
“I’m not a kid! Could a kid do this?” This time, she hugged him very tightly.
“Okay, fine, I get it. You’re not a kid, you’re a woman. A very sexy woman. Now let go of me! We’re going to go fight!”
“Let’s go!”
-
When they reached the outskirts of town, they saw a small group of about four or five men coming towards them.
“They’re thieves! And look, they’re all carrying axes!”
“I knew that. Now let go of my arm already! I need it to cast spells!”
“Wait, what? You can use magic!?”
“You could say that.” Lewyn faced the men and chanted a wind spell.
Two of the men got caught up in the gust, and were blown over.
“Wow, you did it! Wha ha ha!” As she laughed, Sylvia started to dance a strange dance.
“What are you doing!? Who starts dancing next to someone who’s fighting!?”
“This is my job! Just watch me! It’ll give you your energy back!”
“Actually, yeah, it kinda does…” He noted, then shot another gust of wind at the thieves.
