I walked into a sales call in Kansas last week and was told the owner had died. He was my age.

I actually met him before I had this job. About 6 years ago We sat next to each other on the same delayed flight going home from a trade show and got stuck in DFW for the night. So we shared an Uber to a hotel and went out for beers.

We talked and he made me laugh until tears were streaming down my face. We had one of those close calls in the elevator on the way to our rooms. I was still married at the time so I couldn’t go through with it. But I never forgot him.

When I started this job I was stoked his business was in my territory. I called on him about every six months. When I walked in this time I asked for him and they told me he passed away. At first I laughed and said “you’re joking right?” Then their faces told me they weren’t.

I asked what happened. He committed suicide was the answer. We really only had one meaningful interaction. Literally just a few hours together but this man made a huge impact on me. I never forgot him. I kept his business card in my car for years. I just threw it away last month when I bought my new car thinking I’d get a new one from him the next time I saw him.

I can’t stop thinking about him now. How his energy was palpable and I can’t stop wondering how someone with so much going for them would feel like he needed to do that. I feel a loss even though I didn’t know him well. I felt his light. I’m super sad he’s gone.

From a young age liked to tell stories, even before he could read or write.

Started accumulating books and notebooks filled with his own stories almost as soon as he could though.

While he's never had a terrible relationship with his family, he's also never felt like he's entirely fit in, finding his interests and desires didn't always quite align.

Like his older brother during his years at university he found himself studying abroad in the U.S for a year.

It was during his years at university that his very first book was published.

It practically became an overnight success, prompting a book tour.

The next few books he wrote did well enough, but compared to his debut were often middling in reviews and sales.

It was after a two year hiatus from writing that he published the book that would go on to change it all. The first in a collection of stories all taking place on a distant planet.

He developed a following. Fans with dedicated sites and theories trying to guess what the next story would be or if it would focus on some side character that was mentioned in chapter 3 of some previous book, and those who had taken the time to learn the language that he developed, so much so that he even wound up releasing a limited number of the books written entirely in the language.

Since his late 20s has split his time between his home in England and the DFW area where his older brother had been living prior after marrying an American woman and having kids. Though has found himself spending more and more time in the states and often only going back to England for holiday or work related things

A few years ago a young man showed up at one of his book signings claiming that he was his son and also that his mother didn't know he was there or saying anything about it.

The date of his birth aligned with the timeline of when Rudyard had been on the book tour for his very first book all those years ago. It was later confirmed through testing that he was, in fact, his son.

Rudyard is currently working on the next book in his collection.

Dallas-Fort Worth has lost its spot as the No. 1 new home sales market in Texas, according to a new report.

DFW, which led all Texas metros in sales of newly built homes for much of 2023, has been No. 2 to Houston every month in 2024, according to data from Dallas-based HomesUSA.com.

I learned from some very talented people during this time, so when the Regional DOS for the new Courtyard Dallas Downtown reached out to me on LinkedIn I jumped at the opportunity to become a DOS and open a brand new hotel in the middle of the convention district and Central Business District. After this I walked into the SpringHill Suites Dallas Park Central and asked if they needed a DOS. I was on the job in less than a week and was able to assist the regional team to open the hotel. The opening was successful in a much calmer area of the city. I worked with local hospitals, school district, and North Park mall for training teams. ***Shifting business from lower rated hotels in area such as Hyatt, overflow for CY&RI, Hilton Home2, Hampton***Small management company had no true sales goals. A friend of mine who had opened as the Director of Sales at the Element Dallas Downtown just after I had opened the Courtyard Downtown reached out to me and let me know she was leaving and had given my name to her Regional DOS as her selected choice for someone to take over her role. I took the role just months before March 2020!! COVID-19 moved the hotel from sell out 3 times a week to 10% occupancy filled by Baylor Hospital traveling nurses. Layoffs hit the sales team. Went into Real Estate as a leasing agent in Dallas. Assisted people renting/leasing apartments, condos, homes to repair their credit and work to buy first homes. Worked as a referral agent with Ebby Haliday & Century 21 Fine Homes & Estates.

Worked with Island and Highgate during the pandemic openings in operations with my former GM from CY/FF Market Center who was the Area Managing Director for Highgate. Then took seasonal full time work with Delta Airlines as a Customer Engagement Specialist before being asked to GM the Residence Inn OKC South for Highgate, a hotel is very bad shape. Opened the hotel, opened the meeting room, secured traveling nurses, worked with local Chamber of Commerce. Due to medical problems that have been resolved left and lived with family and became the AGM/GM of a restaurant in my home town.
