so if what you want to do is discuss a work on its own merits--"does this work have a coherent theme or thesis?" "how does this work utilize the chosen medium?" "is the work aesthetically pleasing?" "Are the things the work is saying about the world true?"--the word "content" is perfectly sufficient. and once you've discussed all of that, who cares if it's art?
