there are very few justifiable reasons to buy and use plastic commodities when there are alternatives available, besides the near-unavoidable ones like food wrappers etc; what might irk me the most though, as an insufferable pedant and pathological hater, is plastic tableware and utensils. I was thinking about it while doing the dishes. Their popularity can’t exactly be explained exclusively through typical consumer practices; though they cost pennies to make given petrol subsidies, ceramic tableware has to be overall cheaper given that any thrift store, yard sale, antique store, and facebook marketplace is overflowing with the kitchen accoutrements of dead grandmas and ex wives. But as we know the American is not an intellectual, to put it mildly, and even with thrift in vogue due in part to both economic decline and youth culture’s drive for perceived esotericism, the average American consumer still buys most commodities new in-box via one of the easily accessible trash peddling megacorporations like walmart or amazon. I think another aspect of it though is the phenomenon of commodity infantilisation. Everything made for children is made out of plastic, marketed as being hard to destroy, an appealing pitch for American parents who by and large see children as mindless animals lacking all awareness and agency that couldn’t possibly be taught in their formative years how to handle objects with care or be responsible for simple chores, and as such should be provided with the most bomb proof fixtures possible, yet simultaneously expedient and disposable because it’s assumed that a child is only fit for a child’s item and it will be disposed of as they mature. Anyways i’ve already talked for too long about goddamn plastic bowls of all things but they’re basically the kitchen equivalent of funko pops to me

TIMING: current LOCATION: in nora's crypt SUMMARY: nora reflects on her relationship with her body image CONTENT WARNINGS: none
There were websites Nora learned to avoid from a young age. Users from around the world used those pages as landing sites, wasting hours of their lives browsing the pictures, articles, and comments that littered the space. Each user, faceless behind their icon, feeling the need to comment. Their opinion, in a sea of billions, was somehow the most important opinion that could be stated. At thirteen, Eleanor got her first magazine cover. Spoon fed by her parents, handpicked and designed by a team of agents to make her look as marketable as possible. Each choice taken from her as an adult gave her instructions and corrections. The one choice that mattered had never been asked. Do you want to model?
No.
Thirteen was too young to become aware that her body was a commodity and not a haven. Already plagued by the bear of it all, puberty was a heavy hitter. Not as heavy hitting as the comments. Thousands of words all written about her. Nameless people commented on what they wanted her to be. What the team had done right, what they had done wrong, what plastic surgery she would need done, and why she was ugly. "Did they have to choose someone ugly?" "What's wrong with her eyes?" "kys"  "The campaign was a big success." The marketing analyst had told them in a meeting. "We have a 93 percent approval rating based on the comments." As if the 7 percent hadn't mattered to them.
It had mattered to Eleanor.
In present days the mirror hadn't bothered Nora like it used to. An escape from a life where she was told what to wear, how to act, and who to be was behind her. She was picking up the pieces of who she thought she might want to be and replacing them with the pieces of who she was made to be. The puzzle revealed a different picture when the pieces were rearranged.  The first thing Nora had done with her newfound freedom was cut off her hair. The knife was dull and the result was choppy. It had been her first real taste of freedom. The piecings followed quickly. Eventually, she would have the money for tattoos.
The crystals had been a game changer. The crystals had looked into her soul and delivered her an image that she could only dream of. A replacement of the skin that had been so harshly judged in her youth with a shiny exterior. Monsters don't get places in society for being beautiful. Monsters get places for being terrifying. Monsters are exempt from the rule that you must be pretty to succeed because, by default, society already rejected them. A monster was something she could embrace.
But the crystals had controlled her. As effectively as the want to please her fathers, the crystals had changed her. They had controlled her hair, outfit, and makeup. They booked photoshoot and photoshoot. They planned a schedule so complicated that no child could ever experience a childhood. The crystals had given her what she had wanted in such a slow boiling pot that she hadn't noticed the noose tying around her neck. The freedom slipped between her clutching fingers and was replaced with a pacifier. Pacify the anger so it never shows.
The camera on Nora's phone showed her inverted. A Nora she'd worked to be, but not the one she wanted to be. The knife next to her had bits of stray hair still clinging to its sharp edge, but the previous joy of determining her haircut wasn't obtained. The idea drifted in her head, a flashing DVD sign trying to hit corners, that maybe she should stab a needle into her face. A new piercing to make up for the crystals she had lost. Why did she mourn something that came at such a horrible price? How could she maintain a longing to return to the crystals while her rage for what they had taken from her broiled in her?
The phone dropped to the cot. Nora wanted to throw it. Nora wanted to rage. Nora wanted to break everything, herself included. But if Nora broke her cellphone there would be no Teddy to help her replace it. Because Teddy hadn't escaped. Because the mines had freed her but taken a bigger victory, the kindest demon in the world. Nora wanted to rip and shred and scream and tear and kill until it didn’t hurt anymore.

In Saint-Léon close to Bordeaux is located a “laboratory” that gives new life to plastic waste
Tumblr media
At the crossroads of contemporary design and the circular economy, the Plastiquerie manufactures sustainable furniture from recycled plastic.
So what do the big yellow and blue bags from Ikea or the construction helmets from the manufacturer Vinci have in common? They are made of a plastic material that can be recycled to make new objects. “Recycled plastic is a material with endless possibilities that I want to make known to designers. It’s a bit like the marble of the Anthropocene”, explains Julie Robert, co-founder of La Plastiquerie [1] based in Saint-Léon[2], about thirty kilometres south-east of Bordeaux.
Shelves, furniture or floor tiles
Since 2021, the independent artistic director has been passionate about this raw material, she has learned the properties of in order to manufacture designer objects and furniture. The association recovers plastic waste in polypropylene (PP)[3], polyethylene (PE)[4] or polystyrene (PS)[5]  to give them a second life. “PET[6] waste such as plastic bottles already benefit from recycling solutions. I focus on families of plastics that are still poorly revalued”, she specifies. Protective films, water tubes from construction sites or industry off-cuts from yoghurt pots are thus treated in a 100 m² workshop housed in the premises of the Syndicate of the Entre-deux-Mers-West-region for the Collection and Treatment of Household Waste[7].
There, under a sheet metal shed, a shredder and a hot press transform the collected waste into confetti and then into large recycled plastic plates that will be used to make shelves, furniture or floor tiles. “La Plastiquerie is a laboratory where we develop prototypes of objects resulting from the recovery of plastic. From cans and flowerpots, for example, I imagined a wall light that saves 980 grams of plastic from landfill and incineration,” explains the entrepreneur.
"Companies want to recycle their own waste"
Although the Plastiquerie was co-founded with another woman, Amandine Boutang, Julie Robert now works alone, sometimes helped by an intern and supported by a board of directors, on her experiments with furniture designed in recycled and recyclable plastic. She is thinking about a waste sorting cabinet for the canteen of the Suez[8]  headquarters in Occitanie-Nouvelle Aquitaine[9]. For the Bordeaux start-up Arits[10], she is working on the design of a lamp. A bank has also just approached her for an interior design project…
"Companies come naturally to the association because they want to recover their own waste or participate in the circular economy", rejoices the forty-year-old who wants to sharpen her expertise on recycled plastic to convince designers to adopt it. Two years after the launch of her project, Julie Robert draws a positive balance sheet: “I discovered the world of the circular economy where the actors are positive, imaginative people, full of energy and solutions. A world in which a great breath of optimism is sweeping in which I find myself.”

Aluminium Trihydrate Price | Prices | Pricing | News | Database | Chart | ChemAnalyst
Aluminium Trihydrate Prices commonly known as ATH, is a crucial mineral compound used across a variety of industries, including the manufacturing of flame retardants, fillers, and in the production of aluminum. The price of Aluminium Trihydrate is influenced by multiple factors, including raw material costs, demand in key industries, and market conditions in the mining and chemicals sectors. Understanding the pricing trends of ATH is essential for businesses and manufacturers to navigate cost fluctuations and optimize their operations.
The global demand for Aluminium Trihydrate has been steadily rising due to its extensive applications. ATH is primarily used in the production of flame retardants, where it acts as an effective non-toxic fire retardant. Its use in plastic, rubber, and coatings industries for this purpose has been a major driver of its price movements. As safety regulations become stricter across various regions, particularly in construction and automotive sectors, the demand for flame retardants, and consequently ATH, continues to increase. Additionally, ATH serves as a critical raw material in the production of aluminum metal, where it acts as a precursor in the Bayer process. These varied applications contribute to the overall demand for Aluminium Trihydrate, which in turn impacts its price.
Get Real Time Prices for Aluminium Trihydrate: https://www.chemanalyst.com/Pricing-data/aluminium-trihydrate-1621
Another key factor influencing ATH pricing is the cost of raw materials and energy. Aluminium Trihydrate is primarily derived from bauxite, a naturally occurring mineral. Fluctuations in the global supply of bauxite can have a significant impact on the availability and price of ATH. The extraction and processing of bauxite require substantial energy inputs, and any shifts in energy costs, especially those related to fuel and electricity, can influence the production cost of ATH. As energy prices fluctuate, manufacturers may adjust the price of ATH to reflect these changes. Additionally, labor costs, transportation expenses, and mining regulations in major bauxite-producing countries can all contribute to price volatility.
The geographical distribution of ATH production also plays a role in its pricing. Major producers of Aluminium Trihydrate include countries such as China, the United States, and Australia, where large-scale bauxite mining and processing facilities are located. Transportation costs and supply chain disruptions in these regions can cause short-term fluctuations in ATH prices. For example, natural disasters, geopolitical tensions, or logistic challenges can lead to delays in the supply of bauxite, causing a ripple effect on the availability of ATH. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the vulnerability of global supply chains, leading to production halts and price surges in several commodities, including ATH.
Environmental regulations and sustainability trends are also shaping the Aluminium Trihydrate market. As environmental awareness grows, companies are increasingly looking for eco-friendly alternatives to traditional flame retardants, such as halogenated compounds. This has spurred innovation in the ATH market, with manufacturers focusing on producing more sustainable and high-performance grades of Aluminium Trihydrate. The implementation of stricter environmental policies in various countries may result in higher production costs for ATH manufacturers who need to comply with these regulations. However, these changes also offer opportunities for producers who can align their products with eco-friendly certifications and industry standards.
Demand from the construction and automotive sectors is another major driver of ATH prices. In construction, Aluminium Trihydrate is used in the production of non-combustible materials such as building facades and fire-resistant coatings. With the growing emphasis on safety standards and fire prevention in both residential and commercial buildings, ATH demand is expected to remain strong. The automotive industry also contributes to ATH demand, as flame retardants are used in vehicle interiors, wiring, and insulation materials to comply with fire safety regulations. As the demand for electric vehicles (EVs) grows, ATH is likely to see an uptick in use, as EV batteries and components require high standards of fire protection.
The price of Aluminium Trihydrate also experiences periodic fluctuations driven by market speculation, as is the case with many other industrial commodities. Financial traders and investors often speculate on future price movements of ATH based on anticipated supply shortages, demand forecasts, or geopolitical developments. These speculative activities can amplify price volatility, especially in the short term. For example, if a major producer experiences a strike or supply chain interruption, market participants may drive up prices in anticipation of a supply shortage.
The growth of emerging economies, particularly in Asia, has been another key factor in shaping the demand and pricing for Aluminium Trihydrate. Countries like China, India, and Southeast Asian nations have seen rapid urbanization and industrialization in recent years, driving the demand for construction materials, automotive components, and consumer goods. ATH plays a significant role in these sectors, particularly in the production of flame retardants and coatings. As these economies continue to expand, the demand for Aluminium Trihydrate is expected to grow, further influencing its market price.
Looking ahead, the price of Aluminium Trihydrate is expected to remain subject to fluctuations driven by a combination of supply-side and demand-side factors. Raw material costs, energy prices, labor conditions, and environmental regulations will continue to influence production costs, while end-user industries such as construction, automotive, and electronics will drive demand. As businesses navigate these challenges, it will be crucial for manufacturers to remain adaptable, leveraging advances in technology and sustainability practices to maintain profitability while responding to market dynamics. Furthermore, geopolitical factors, trade policies, and international economic conditions will continue to shape the global Aluminium Trihydrate market. Ultimately, the future pricing of ATH will reflect a balance of these diverse elements, making it essential for industry stakeholders to stay informed and agile in managing their operations and cost structures.

Foam recycling through pyrolysis and distillation processes
A team of experts from the UK and Massachusetts is working on a cost-effective way to recycle polystyrene packaging products. This innovative method has the potential to reuse up to 60% of polystyrene. According to estimates, the recycling rate of plastics in the United States is about 5% to 6%. The team used a pyrolysis and distillation process as a solution for foam recycling, in which polystyrene is heated in a vacuum, broken down into monomers, and purified. Polystyrene is ideal for chemical recycling, which is not only energy efficient but also potentially economically competitive. In addition to chemical recycling, physical recycling through machines such as foam densifiers can also achieve the reuse of waste foam resources. First, the foam needs to be pre-processed, such as collecting, sorting and removing impurities such as tape. Next, this lightweight material is compacted into compact ingots by a polystyrene densifier. After granulation, polystyrene ingots can be processed into recycled PS particles for use in the production of other environmentally friendly products. Foam densifier is a mechanical device used for foam recycling. This equipment can squeeze out air and even water from the foam. After the hot melt treatment, the volume of the white foam is greatly reduced, reaching a compression ratio of 90:1. The treated polystyrene foam compression material will become a new commodity for sale in the international market.

The polyethylene (PE) market is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 4.1% from 2024 to 2030. According to I.C.I.S’ 2024 report, the global demand for PE increased by 140% from 1992 to 2023. This was an increase of 2.8 million tons on average each year for the same period. The demand for the commodity is mainly driven by its consumption in the packaging of food, beverages, and consumer goods. This is due to its properties, such as durability, easy customization, and moisture resistance. The G20 countries accounted for 78% of global PE demand in 2023. Changing consumer preferences is boosting the demand for on-the-go and secure food packaging globally.
Procurement of bio-based PE is gaining traction with rising focus on sustainable packaging to reduce environmental impact. Bio-based PE is produced from renewable raw materials such as sugarcane and can be recycled. Companies such as LynodellBasell Industries Holdings B.V., and Neste are involved in producing such kind of bio-based PE. Companies are also increasing their production capacity to produce more bio-based polyethylene. For instance, in July 2023, Braskem announced the completion of its 30% increase in production capacity of a bio-based ethylene plant located in Brazil. The capacity of the plant has increased from 200,000 to 260,000 tons per year. The increase in capacity is a significant move in Braskem’s commitment to sustainable development.
Currently, the majority of single-use PE products are being disposed of in landfills, contributing to ocean pollution and posing a threat to marine ecosystems. As a result, researchers are developing new technologies that would help in reducing waste through upcycling. For instance, in 2023 it was reported that Associate Professor Hsi-Wu Wong and Dongming Xie, both faculty researchers in chemical engineering, are currently working on technology aimed at reducing plastic waste through upcycling. This innovative process involves transforming discarded materials into products of greater value than their original form. Their research is further bolstered by a three-year grant totaling USD 463,000 from the National Science Foundation. Moreover, advancements such as the development of new catalysts and processes for more efficient polymerization can enhance production efficiency and quality.

The industry is fragmented in nature due to the presence of various types of PE such as high-density polyethylene (HDPE), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE). Companies are continuously investing in new production technologies and increasing production capacities to meet customer needs. Alternative products such as bioplastics, paper-based packaging materials, and others can pose a moderate threat of substitutes in the market. Environmental concerns and regulations regarding plastic usage have increased the demand for eco-friendly alternatives, potentially posing a threat to the demand for the product.
Buyers in the market are diverse and include manufacturers of packaging materials, consumer goods, construction materials, and more. Factors such as market demand and availability of substitutes impact the buyer's responsiveness to price fluctuations. Buyers often engage in negotiations with suppliers to secure favorable pricing or terms, especially in industries with high competition.
Raw material (ethylene), labor, machinery, rent and facilities, and packaging & transportation are some of the key cost components incurred in the production of PE. Other costs are technology, utilities, repair and maintenance, testing and inspection, marketing, and legal costs. Polyethylene is manufactured from ethylene (which comes from petroleum). Thus, changes in ethylene prices impact the production costs and thus the final prices of the product. Raw materials and labor account for a major part of the overall cost structure. The prices of HDPE in North America witnessed fluctuations in the fourth quarter of 2023. The prices initially surged in October 2023 due to rising feedstock i.e. ethylene prices along with strong demand from packaging, automotive, and construction industries. The prices decreased by the end of Q4 2023 to around USD 1,217/MT for HDPE blow molding grade due to decreasing naphtha and crude oil demand in the global industry. Similarly, in Asian markets there were mixed trends as demand in the Indian and Chinese markets also initially declined in the last quarter of 2023. However, the prices elevated in December 2023 due to a recovery in demand in these markets. The prices of HDPE (blow molding grade) settled around USD 944/MT at the end of Q4 2023.
As part of the polyethylene procurement strategy, clients such as packaging companies fully outsource their PE manufacturing. Outsourcing services give clients exposure to procure products of good quality at better prices. China and India are preferred countries for sourcing polyethylene as they are the top-producing countries of the product. The quality and type of PE are major factors in the procurement of the commodity. Outsourcing the manufacturing of the product can help the procurement team in evaluating the quality of the product and making decisions in deciding suppliers of the product.

Acetone Prices | Pricing | Trend | News | Database | Chart | Forecast
Acetone, a versatile solvent widely used in various industries, has seen fluctuating prices due to several economic factors. As a key ingredient in the production of chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products, acetone plays a critical role in manufacturing processes. The price of acetone is influenced by multiple variables, including supply and demand dynamics, production costs, raw material prices, and geopolitical events. Understanding the acetone market can help businesses and consumers make informed decisions regarding their purchases and investments.
In recent years, the price of acetone has experienced notable volatility. This can be attributed to the fluctuations in crude oil prices, as acetone is primarily derived from propylene, which is produced from crude oil. When oil prices rise, the cost of producing acetone tends to increase, leading to higher market prices. Conversely, when oil prices fall, acetone prices often follow suit, creating a direct correlation between these commodities. Market analysts closely monitor crude oil trends to predict potential acetone price changes, allowing businesses to strategize their purchasing and inventory management effectively.
Get Real Time Prices for Acetone: https://www.chemanalyst.com/Pricing-data/acetone-12
Another significant factor influencing acetone prices is the balance between supply and demand. Acetone is used in various applications, including the production of plastics, fibers, and solvents, which are essential in everyday products such as nail polish remover, paint thinners, and cleaning agents. When demand for these products increases, it can lead to a surge in acetone prices due to limited supply. Conversely, if the demand for acetone decreases, prices may drop as manufacturers look to clear excess inventory. Seasonal trends, such as increased demand during certain months for manufacturing industries, can also impact acetone pricing, creating periodic fluctuations throughout the year.
Geopolitical factors play a crucial role in determining acetone prices as well. Events such as trade disputes, sanctions, or political instability in key producing regions can disrupt supply chains and affect production levels. For example, if a country that produces a significant amount of propylene faces political turmoil or natural disasters, it could lead to a reduction in acetone output, driving prices higher. Businesses operating in the acetone market must remain vigilant about global events that could impact their supply chain and pricing structures.
Furthermore, environmental regulations and sustainability initiatives have increasingly influenced acetone production and pricing. Many governments worldwide are implementing stricter regulations to reduce carbon emissions and promote greener manufacturing processes. As a result, acetone producers may need to invest in more sustainable practices, which could raise production costs. These increased costs may, in turn, be passed on to consumers through higher prices. On the other hand, the shift toward more environmentally friendly products may lead to an increase in demand for acetone, particularly in industries focused on sustainability, further complicating the pricing landscape.
Additionally, the rise of alternative solvents and materials in various industries can also impact acetone prices. As industries strive for greener solutions, some manufacturers are exploring the use of bio-based solvents or other chemical alternatives that may reduce reliance on traditional acetone. If these alternatives gain traction and become widely adopted, the demand for acetone could diminish, leading to lower prices. However, until significant alternatives are developed and accepted, acetone remains a staple in many industrial applications, ensuring a continued level of demand that influences pricing.
Market participants often utilize futures contracts to hedge against acetone price fluctuations. These contracts allow businesses to lock in prices for future purchases, providing some level of stability in a volatile market. Companies that rely heavily on acetone for their production processes can benefit from such contracts, as they help manage costs and protect profit margins. Conversely, businesses that do not utilize hedging strategies may find themselves exposed to unpredictable price swings, impacting their overall financial health.
As acetone prices continue to fluctuate, businesses must remain agile and adaptable. Monitoring market trends, understanding the factors influencing prices, and employing strategic purchasing practices can help organizations navigate the complexities of the acetone market. Investing in strong relationships with suppliers, exploring alternative sourcing options, and keeping abreast of industry developments can all contribute to better pricing strategies and overall competitiveness in the market.
In summary, the price of acetone is subject to various influencing factors, including crude oil prices, supply and demand dynamics, geopolitical events, environmental regulations, and the emergence of alternative materials. Understanding these elements is crucial for businesses and consumers alike, as they navigate the challenges and opportunities within the acetone market. As the demand for acetone continues to evolve, staying informed and proactive in response to changing conditions will be essential for success in this dynamic and vital industry. By remaining aware of market trends and employing strategic approaches, companies can position themselves to mitigate risks associated with acetone price fluctuations and seize opportunities for growth in an ever-changing economic landscape.
