“Women can’t use their feminine wiles to manipulate computers” [GMS Brief]
They say women are from Venus and men are from Mars, anything a man can do, a woman can do better and some say men are lunatics and women are idiots. None of this is true.
The same can be said about a woman’s ability to use a computer has nothing to do with the fact she is a woman. I have highlighted a couple of graphic design legends below who have contributed to the success of typography throughout the technological era, those who took design and made it digital.
Carol Twombly
The design world is fully immersed in the work of Carol Twombly and is often the first thing we see when we start typing within any Adobe program without us even knowing it. Twombly worked at Adobe Systems from 1988 and her type designs are some of the most iconic within Adobe, having created several typefaces such a Myriad, Trajan, Adobe Caslon, and Charlemagne, designers can be thankful to her and for her creative flair never failing.
Tumblr media
Twombly grew up engrossed in ancient art and practices, pursuing skills in basket-weaving, jewellery making, painting and drawing before following her architect brother’s lead and studying at The Rhode Island School of Design. Initially, Twombly, decided to study sculpture but quickly moved over to pursue a career in Graphic Design. It was here she was introduced to typeface design by her professor, Chuck Bigelow and his partner, Kris Holmes.
She continued to study this intricate art, falling in love with the process of designing type before graduating and working in a design studio. She was one of the first members of a new Digital Typography program at Stamford and later received a Master's in computer science & typographic design. After four years working in Bigelow & Holmes’ studio, Twombly won a competition with her first type design, Mirarae, and became a full-time type designer with Adobe Systems soon after where she spent 11+ years on the Adobe Originals program.
Tumblr media
Twombly’s designs are some of the most iconic Adobe typefaces – Caslon, Lithos, Trajan, Charlemagne – and these fonts were developed with Twombly’s keen eye for artistic heritage. Studying and translating ancient artifacts such as the Ancient Roman stone carvings on Trajan’s column; Anglo-Saxon texts boasting Carolingian art (combined with her love for calligraphy) created Charlemagne; or Greek inscriptions turned to the modern-day equivalent known as Lithos before collaborating with Robert Slimbach to produce her first solely original design, Myriad.
Tumblr media
In 1994, Twombly became the first woman (and 2nd American) to be presented with the Prix Charles Peignot award by the Association Typographique International, a milestone for a promising designer, less than 35 years of age. Despite creating so many digital typefaces that maintained their traditional roots, it was these roots that Twombly decided to get back to when she left Adobe in 1999.
Kris Holmes
Kris Holmes studied calligraphy, modern dance, visual arts, lettering, type design and she has a BA in Art from Harvard and an MFA in animation from UCLA Film school - some could say she was fully immersed in the world of type design and it is all these experiences that crafted her into the incredibly well-known designer she is today. Her work has been used in many magazines such as Scientific American & Fine Print, in public locations such as Ghirardelli Square and awarded many accolades such as the Frederic W. Goudy Award in typography (Rochester Institute of Technology).
Tumblr media
With over 300 typefaces under her belt, it is important to note her most well-known work is seen daily in the world of computing. Along with her partner, Chuck Bigelow (Bigelow & Holmes), Holmes created the Lucida Grande typeface family (the first original type suitable for low-res laser printing), the scripts for Java 2 operating systems (a multilingual font in twelve styles, five languages, consisting of 10,000 characters total) and the system fonts for Apple OS X – New York, Monaco, Geneva, and Apple Chancery.
Tumblr media
Other clients came from all kinds of computer platforms – Microsoft, Adobe, HP, and ITC – and Holmes, being the leading artist at Bigelow & Holmes, worked on the creation of over 100 digital typefaces that remain today, some of the most viewed type designs in the world.

Maine Teen Converts To Sunni Islam, Plots To Blow Up Shi’ite Mosque In Chicago, Plus Churches And Synagogues
Yet another convert to Islam somehow gets the crazy idea that his new religion of peace calls upon him to do violence to unbelievers. Authorities worldwide remain resolutely incurious about this frequently recurring phenomenon. “More charges against teen for ISIS-inspired plot show threat to Chicago may have been more serious,” by Chuck Goudie, Barb Markoff, Christine Tressel and Ross Weidner,…

Remdesivir: A Solution To The Virus?
By Brian Uhler, University of Chicago Class of 2021
June 20, 2020
Tumblr media
In the midst of a global pandemic, any potential solution must be taken seriously. Recently, a Chicago hospital has used a drug called “remdesivir” in its treatment of severe Covid-19 patients, and it seems to have had some success. Clinical trials done by University of Chicago Medicine have helped confirm these results; they tested the drug on 125 patients with the virus (113 of these patients were considered to have “severe” cases). Infectious disease specialist Kathleen Mullane noted that most of the patients that had undergone the trial have been discharged, with only 2 fatalities. [1]Of course, this is a small sample size and more clinical trials will be necessary to know how effective the drug is. Plus, it was noted that this trial did not include a placebo group – a common variable when testing out new drugs. However, these results are, at the very least, encouraging. If and when this treatment is verified to be both safe and effective, it will likely be approved quickly by the Food and Drug Administration and fast-tracked into widespread use.
But what exactly is this drug? According to drugs.com, remdesivir is an antiviral agent that is administered intravenously (by IV), developed by Gilead Sciences. [3] According to Gilead’s website, it is commonly used against viral pathogens MERS and SARS, [6] which are coronaviruses that are not dissimilar from Covid-19. Given the structural similarities of the typical targets of the treatment and Covid-19, it seems quite possible that the treatment will be effective on this new virus as well. The idea behind the antiviral medicine is that it slows or stops the virus from replicating. However, this treatment is not without risks. There are many potential side effects, including (but not limited to) abnormal liver function tests, increased sweating, nausea and vomiting, and feeling light-headed. Additionally, other drugs may affect remdesivir, such as vitamins and prescription drugs. [3] But given the urgency of the pandemic and the desperation of our country in combating it, are these risks ones that are worth taking?
In May, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave remdesivir emergency authorization to treat Covid-19 patients in Illinois. [2] Of course, given that Chicago is the major city in Illinois and the virus is concentrated primarily in the most populated areas (cities), most of the allotted remdesivir went to Cook County, the county in which Chicago is located. Illinois received 140 cases of the drug, which could treat about 700 patients. However, this is far from enough – at the time of the drug’s delivery, Illinois had more than 1,200 cases, with that number increasing by the day. The amount of remdesivir given to Illinois is of course better than nothing, but it is still frustrating for hospitals to not have what they need in a time of crisis. But despite these difficulties, it seems that the FDA is taking a step in the right direction. According to an FDA press release regarding the authorization of remdesivir, the FDA believes that given the available data, it is reasonable to believe that remdesivir could be an effective treatment of Covid-19. The FDA, noting that that there seem to be no adequate or approved alternatives, stated that the “known and potential benefits to treat this serious or life-threatening virus currently outweigh the known and potential risks of the drug’s use.” [7]
While early on we did not know how effective the treatment really was, a lot of time has passed since April, when the first study cited took place. Another study done far more recently did feature a placebo-controlled trial of remdesivir with a sample size nearly 10 times the size of the April study. [5] This study found that use of the drug shortened the recovery time of patients; those that had taken the drug averaged a recovery time of 11 days, while those that had received a placebo averaged a recovery time of 15 days. In addition to this, those that had taken the drug also ended up with a lower mortality rate; those that had taken remdesivir had a mortality rate that was 4.8% lower than for the placebo group. So, all in all, remdesivir was superior to the placebo in shortening the recovery time of adults hospitalized with Covid-19.
Besides just the hard data of the studies done on the drug, there have also been a number of testimonies from people that have recovered from the drug. A notable case in Chicago involved a patient named Juana Glass. [4] Glass was offered an opportunity to try the drug during a research trial, and she said that “immediately, as soon as we tried the remdesivir, it was like, immediate relief to my lungs.” Her case was not unlike many others: Glass went to the hospital to be checked for what she thought was a flu, but it ended up being something much worse. Her lungs felt as if they were on fire, and it required an inhuman effort to do basic tasks like walking, moving, or even breathing. She was on the verge of being placed on a ventilator when she agreed to the trial. Glass, after the drug trial, was out of the hospital in about a week. The doctors in the hospital noted that the treatment is not a cure; rather, remdesivir helps people recover faster. In Juana Glass’s case, this was the truth: she recovered very quickly after receiving the treatment, and so it stands to reason that remdesivir greatly helped speed up her recovery process. While the future of this treatment remains unclear, we will continue to hope for the best.

Former MLB pitcher Esteban Loaiza originally pleaded not guilty to a felony drug charge. Former All-Star pitcher Esteban Loaiza is expected to change his plea from not guilty to guilty in his federal cocaine distribution case, Chuck Goudie and Ross Weidner of ABC7 Chicago report. According to ABC7, Loaiza is scheduled to have a "Change of Plea" hearing on Friday, after originally pleading not guilty to charges of possession and transportation for sale of more than 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of cocaine, a cocaine base or heroin and using a false compartment to smuggle drugs. Neither Loaiza's attorney nor a spokesperson for the United States Attorney in San Diego would comment on the case to ABC7. Loaiza was arrested in February with about 20 kilograms of cocaine in his car. If convicted, Loaiza would face a mandatory-minimum sentence of 10 years, and could face up to life in prison, according to ABC7. Loaiza, 46, spent 14 seasons in MLB from 1995 through 2008. He spent time with the Pirates, Rangers, White Sox, Blue Jays, A's, Dodgers, Nationals and Yankees. Occupational Health News Roundup
At the Huffington Post, Dave Jamieson reports that labor unions are stepping up to help protect increasingly vulnerable immigrant workers from deportation. In fact, Jamieson writes that in many instances, labor unions have become “de facto immigrants rights groups,” educating workers on their rights and teaching immigrants how to best handle encounters with immigration officials.
Jamieson’s story begins:
Yahaira Burgos was fearing the worst when her husband, Juan Vivares, reported to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in lower Manhattan in March. Vivares, who fled Colombia and entered the U.S. illegally in 2011, had recently been given a deportation order. Rather than hide, he showed up at the ICE office with Burgos and his lawyer to continue to press his case for asylum.
Vivares, 29, was detained for deportation. That’s when Burgos’ union sprang into action.
Prepared for Vivares’ detention, members of the Service Employees International Union Local 32BJ gathered for a rally outside the ICE office that afternoon, demanding his release. Union leadership appealed to New York’s congressional delegation, enlisting Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D) to reach out to ICE leadership. The union president even disseminated the name and phone number for the ICE officer handling Vivares’ deportation and urged allies to call him directly.
“I was very lucky to have a union,” said Burgos, a 39-year-old native of the Dominican Republic who works as a doorwoman on the Upper East Side. “They moved very fast. They moved every politician and every union member. … If it were not for the union he would be deported.”
Vivares is now at home with Burgos and their 19-month-old son, having been granted a stay of deportation as the court considers his motion to reopen his asylum case. Although he’s far from being in the clear, his lawyer, Rebecca Press, says the union’s quick response was critical to keeping Vivares in the U.S. for now. “I do believe that their being able to reach the upper echelons of Congress gave us a window of time,” she said.
Vivares’ case provides a vivid example of the gritty work unions are doing to protect immigrant members and their families vulnerable to deportation in the Trump era.

Charleston Gazette-Mail: Ken Ward Jr. reports that Trump intends to chose David Zatezalo, the former chief executive of the coal company Rhino Resources, to head up the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration. Zatezalo was a top executive at Rhino when MSHA cited the company for a number of health and safety violations, including two “pattern of violations” letters. In 2011, MSHA took the “unusual” action of seeking a court injunction against Rhino after the agency discovered that miners were being tipped off about the timing of MSHA inspections. In a related article in the Huffington Post, Dave Jamieson wrote: “If he’s confirmed by the Republican-controlled Senate, Zatezalo would be just the latest business-friendly official installed in Trump’s deregulation-happy administration. And like many of the appointees before him, Zatezalo has a resume that appears better suited to an industry trade group than a watchdog government agency.”
Sacramento Bee: Marjie Lundstrom reports that a year after 26-year-old Abraham Nicholas Garza was crushed to death at a Sacramento Goodwill outlet store, the nonprofit is facing new lawsuits and heightened scrutiny regarding its worker safety practices. In particular, California’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health opened three more investigations into safety issues at three Goodwill locations in the region. Among the lawsuits is one brought by Dave Goudie, a commercial truck driver who witnessed Garza’s death and had repeatedly warned Goodwill managers about the store’s hazardous work conditions. Goudie is suing Goodwill, his former employer, for defamation and retaliation. In the wake of Garza’s death, Goodwill was issued six violations and more than $106,000 in fines — the highest OSHA penalty ever issued against a Goodwill operation nationwide.
Vox: Alexia Fernandez Campbell reports that in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, unauthorized workers will likely be “desperately needed” to rebuild Houston and the surrounding areas, even as Texas lawmakers are cracking down on undocumented residents and making it harder for them to live and work in the state. Campbell noted that after Hurricane Katrina, undocumented workers did the “dirtiest jobs” during the rebuilding effort, making an average of $10 an hour; overall, undocumented immigrants made up about 25 percent of construction workers after Katrina. However, the post-Katrina situation was also ripe for worker exploitation. Campbell writes: “Federal contractors found themselves in a situation where they could pay workers little money to do dangerous work with little federal oversight. The Department of Labor also temporarily lifted worksite safety enforcement actions against employers in hurricane-affected areas. As a result, undocumented workers were far less likely to get the wages they were promised.”
Los Angeles Times: Matt Hansen writes that years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, “the list of the fallen continues to grow as police officers, firefighters, first responders and recovery workers succumb to illnesses linked to their work in the aftermath of the attacks.” Yesterday, he reported, a memorial on Long Island, New York, was dedicated to those who died on Sept. 11 as well as to those who’ve died from response-related illnesses. As of June, the World Trade Center Health Program had more than 67,000 responders and 12,000 attack survivors enrolled; since the program began in 2011, more than 1,300 enrollees have died, though not all deaths were related to the attack. Hansen writes: “John Feal, who heads the FealGood Foundation, a nonprofit that advocates for first responders, worries that there are still too many responders and survivors who aren’t aware of the federal programs. ‘The reality is that more and more people are getting sick and dying,’ he said. He is particularly concerned about the coming emergence of asbestos cases, which he noted can take up to 20 years to appear.”

COUNTERFEIT CUISINE? HOW FOOD FRAUD CAN GET INTO YOUR KITCHEN An ABC 7 I-Team Investigation Chuck Goudie and Christine Tressel CHICAGO - There are protections in place to safeguard the U.S. food supply, but as with sham designer purses and knock off watches, there are billions of dollars to be made with counterfeit cuisine. Those counterfeit foods include milk, some cheeses and even expensive wine. In June 2016, there was a massive seizure of counterfeit honey in the Chicago suburbs. Homeland Security Investigations and Customs and Border Protections seized 60 tons of fake honey, which is now stored in a government warehouse on the Texas/Mexico border. It was the largest food fraud investigation in U.S. history. "It's a crime in which a lot of people have made a lot of money smuggling it into the United States," Special Agent Matthew Gauder, Homeland Security Investigations - Chicago. The illegal honey was from China, some tainted with antibiotics prohibited in food. The lost revenue for taxpayers tallies in the hundreds of millions. "Honey is not that innocent food we all like to think it is," Gauder said. "It could be 10 percent of the entire U.S. food supply is fraudulent one way or another," said John Spink, Ph.D., director of the Food Fraud Initiative at Michigan State University. Spink said the range of fraudsters is wide. Figuring out who's to blame can be difficult, but necessary. "It's a crime of opportunity it's a crime that is complex so definitely organized crime is involved, but also some of those larger groups are affiliated with other types of crimes such as terrorism," he said. Many food producers are now under assault by well-organized counterfeiters, costing the taxpayers billions and risking consumer health. "We've cleaned up the industry a lot, but the schemes keep evolving," Gauder said. The schemes continue to become more sophisticated, even the paperwork for purity is being faked. "Something that is concerning for me as an investigator and for you as a consumer is that in recent shipments, including a seizure I made a few months ago, we're seeing fake and altered laboratory reports," he said. Some popular targets according to USP, a scientific nonprofit, are olive oil diluted with cheaper inedible oils, spices such as paprika and chili powder mixed with cheaper materials or industrial dyes, honey mislabeled and spiked with corn syrup and possibly antibiotics, and seafood switched out for cheaper species. "There's a good chance, Chuck, that if you order red snapper at a restaurant you are really getting tilapia. If you order tuna or cod, you are probably getting escolar," Gauder said. Escolar is a fish that can cause stomach problems. Food crime can also involve substitution and tampering with dangerous chemicals and ingredients that could make consumers sick. Finding the frauds can be difficult. It's a constant battle for investigators across the globe. A massive Interpol-Europol operation recently claimed to have netted counterfeit sugar contaminated with fertilizer, and Italian olives painted with copper sulfate to enhance color. Chicago restaurateur David Flom of Chicago Cut Steakhouse and Ocean Cut Seafood is aware of the swindlers. "It happens a significant amount in our industry, no question about it," he said. Flom said reputable restaurants now have safeguards in place to guarantee what's on the menu is the real deal. That includes making personal visits to suppliers. "It's very important who you partner with or who your marriages are within the food business, and that they are very strong. And so we spend a lot of time doing that and researching that," Flom said. The penalties associated with being caught are small compared to drug trafficking. "Organized criminals to include the Italian mafia have figured that out. These are crimes that are relatively low risk that come with a high reward," Gauder said. The FDA said it continually monitors food producers for safety. The Grocery Manufacturers of America told the I-Team that product safety and integrity and maintaining consumer confidence are the most important goals of the industry. Best practice is for consumers to buy less-processed food, buy local and skip foods priced too good to be true. Buy from reputable sources and brands -Be skeptical of low prices -Avoid processed foods when possible -Know which food categories are most at risk U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention The Food Fraud Database is a powerful tool helping food manufacturers, suppliers and others identify fraud risks within their value chain. With such a broad set of capabilities, it can be difficult to explore all of the features in a short period of time. GROCERY MANUFACTURERES ASSOCIATION Last spring GMA launched its own tool to help companies combat food fraud called EMAlert. It is a secure and intuitive web-based software tool that allows food manufacturers to rapidly analyze and understand their individual, company-specific EMA vulnerabilities in their manufacturing process. We partnered with the Batelle research group. Their approach for this platform focuses on predicting fraudulent tendencies similar to approaches used by Battelle for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to predict terrorist tendencies and preferences.
