The Little Reasons That Made Me Love Xenoblade Chronicles 1

I’m playing the definitive edition for the very first time on the switch. Today I reached 100 hours and the final chapter. This game has taken a hold of my life, and I just wanted to gush about all the little things that made me go from liking the game to falling in love with it.

-Shulk being a socially awkward dork -Fiora’s absolutely adorable, infectious laughter -Melia’s beautiful poetic declarations when she summons elementals -Reyn and his corny puns -everyone roasting Reyn in post-battle dialogue -Dunban being a good mentor and coaching Shulk and Reyn -Riki. Just Riki. I love everything about that little furry volleyball -Shulk’s weirdly aggressive “HIYAH!” during Light Heal -everyone indulging Riki’s bloated Mighty Heropon ego -Melia trying her best to loosen up and not be so formal with her friends -Riki calling everyone else his sidekicks -Reyn sniffing his pits during idle animation -Melia falling on her ass while practicing her Starlight Kick during idle animation -by concept and in theory, anyway, Sharla being a healing sniper is unconventional and very cool -Dunban getting naked to unleash his full potential as an agility tank -everyone checking on each other and complimenting each other after a fight. love the camaraderie and positive affirmation all around -“born in a world of STRIFE (B), against the ODDS (B), we choose to FIGHT (B)! Blossom Dance!” -“You Caaan DoIt!” -“Riki sneaky!” -“Riki likes fighting easy monsters” -“Diiive SABAT!” -“STREEEAM Edge!”(for the longest time I heard it as Scream Edge) -“Let’s press ON and ON and ON!”

-the sword drones. a joy to watch every time, so satisfying to watch those 10 hits land -the Double Wind animation. especially cool to see it freeze after execution during chain attack. I also like to time it with the beat in Mechanical Rhythm -the needlessly excessive but undoubtedly badass way she twirls her blades -having a whole skill tree dedicated to Shulk. sweet and kinda funny. -unleashing hell with “Final CROOOOSS”

Dance Dance Dance

You read Murakami usually for two specific reasons. Either you want to look cool or you are crazy. I might fall into the second category, or I may just enjoy his writing. As usual, you do not understand every single thing, because you simply cannot. But you read through it, and you can't stop because it's just so beautiful. It haunts you, like Kiki haunts the protagonist. The language leaves you yearning for more.

A week passed. Spring made solid advances, never once retreated. A world away from March. The cherries bloomed and the blossoms scattered in the evening showers. Election came and went, a new school year started. Bjorn Borg retired. Michael Jackson was number one in the charts the whole time. The dead stayed dead.

Although, yes, you have to admit that compared to some other Murakami novels, like say The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, this book is manageable. There is quite a clear plot and not too many magic realist escapades, not too many. Murakami himself makes an appearance as Yuki's author father Hiraku Makimura, not a bad man, just not talented, unlike Murakami. The Dolphin Hotel and the Sheep-Man and the six skeletons, all are possible, and surprisingly not unbelievable, because they might actually be closer to the truth of things than you might expect.

But let's just call it a dream, plain and simple. The expression is closest to something real for us.

So, you keep on turning the pages and reading while...

It was Monday, and the first day back to school since Uncle Ben’s death. Peter stood at his open locker, for once not being blocked by Tim and Sally and Peter oddly misses the two of them making his life more complicated. He stared into the locker, tuning out the rest of the world as they all passed by behind him. He lazily pulled out his textbooks and slipped them into his backpack when his eyes darted up to spot the slew of pictures that were taped to the back of his locker.

There was an old picture of his Mom and Dad at their college graduation, one of Aunt May and himself at the Christmas tree, there were quite a few of him and Ev doing various different things over the years, and then there at the bottom, next to the candid picture of Ev at Coney Island last year, sat the picture of Uncle Ben and Aunt May standing in front the house holding each other gently with wide smiles on there faces.

Peter sucked in a harsh breath suddenly as his eyes danced over the smiling face of Uncle Ben. He gasped softly into his locker hoping not to gather anyone else's attention as the grief of losing Uncle Ben hit him square in the chest knocking the breath clear outta him. His fingers gripped tightly around the locker door as the overwhelming sadness crashed into his body. He knew that Ev was at the main office checking in to update her medical condition and probably nowhere close to him to be able to ask for comfort.

“Parker!” came a loud call and Peter instantly recognized Flash’s voice. He began to shake his head rapidly as he felt the tears well in his eyes.

“Not today Flash.” he said somberly and Peter could feel his senses all focus on Flash as he moved through the hallway towards him. Peter tensed when Flash got close and placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Hey man look I just want to talk.” Flash began to say and Peter moved on autopilot as he turned his body to face Flash and grab him by his track jacket at the zipper and slam him up against the lockers harshly. Flash’s hands wrapped around Peter’s clenched fists as everyone in the hallways stopped dead silent. Peter glared up at Flash as his sorrow morphed into anger that grew hot and flashed through his veins. He began to breathe heavier as he glared up at Flash who stared at him with wide eyes. “Feels better doesn’t it? Look your Uncle died.” Flash said softly and it was as if his words had blown icy wind into Peter’s veins as his anger instantly devolved into sorrow. Hanging his head Peter sucked in a deep breath feeling the sadness start to consume him. “I get it man. I get it. And I’m sorry.” Flash said softly and Peter understood what he was trying to say.

Peter didn’t know who Flash had lost but he knew that him and the other boy now shared a connection with their loss. He slowly lowered Flash to the floor and Flash’s hand came up to rest on his shoulder in comfort.

“Hey Ev!” Flash called out and Peter felt his lungs starting to burn with how he couldn’t pull in enough air. “Ev!” called out Flash as he held onto Peter’s shoulders.

Suddenly Peter felt warmth blossoming in his chest as smaller arms wrapped around his waist and he was finally able to suck in air to fill his lungs. Ev’s citrus scent filled his nose and he sighed softly as he tried to hold back his sobs. A soft weight pressed into his side and then his front as Ev hugged him tightly. Peter rested his head against hers as it settled right under his chin, Peter’s eyes gazed dazedly at Flash from his spot next to the two of them.

“Ev, why don’t you two skip class today and just hang out together. It might’ve been a mistake coming back to school so early after everything.” Flash suggested softly and Peter numbly felt Ev nodding her head at him. “Go on, slip out the side door. Security normally takes their breakfast break now and you won’t get caught. I’ll cover for you guys.”

“Thanks Flash.” Ev said softly and suddenly she was gripping Peter’s hand and tugging him out of the school. The trek she made went past Peter in a blur and soon the sun was hitting his eyes making him squint and jerk back towards the school. “C’mon Pete. Move it or we’ll get caught.” Ev hissed out as she tugged on his arm.

Peter looked over at her still feeling weighed down by the sorrow, but when he saw her slightly widened eyes staring at him he nodded and began walking with her hurriedly away from the school. It wasn’t until they were on the street three blocks away from the school that Ev pulled him into an alleyway and let go of his hand to dig into her backpack for something. Peter instantly missed the connection and stepped closer to her trying to get any bit of warmth and comfort from her. She suddenly looked up at him and placed her cell phone in his hand, he stared at it a moment before looking up at her confused.

“Alright I need you to send three texts.” She told him sternly and Peter felt the fog clear from his head as he began to nod. “Send one to Aunt May telling her that it was too soon to be back at school and we’ll try again tomorrow.” She instructed and Peter began typing away on her phone quickly. “Let her know that we’re alright but we skipped class and will be there to pick her up at the train station.” Peter nodded his head as he typed before sending the text off to Aunt May. “Good now send one to my Dad explaining the same thing.” She instructed and he nodded his head starting to feel more at ease as she told him what to do. After he sent off that text she nodded her head in approval of his work. “Good one more. Send one to Gwen asking her to get our assignments for the day so we don’t miss out on school.”

Peter looked up at her once he was done and she took the phone from his hand and slipped back into her backpack. She then looked up at him silently before embracing him in a tight hug once more. Peter buried his head in her neck and breathed in taking the comfort that she offered him.

“Alright where do you wanna go to blow off some steam?” She asked as pulled away slowly from him. Peter thought for a moment as he shifted his backpack on his back, an idea suddenly filled his mind and he quickly grabbed her hand and dragged her out of the alleyway and towards the subway station.

Peter rode around on his skateboard through the empty storage yard that he found the day of Uncle Ben’s death. He effortlessly did tricks off the buckets and makeshift platforms that Ev had erected around the yard. Peter had chosen this place because while it was bittersweet that he had found it the day of Uncle Ben’s death it still grounded him and was a great place for him to let his energy out. He had also wanted to show Ev the new abilities he had found out about.

He watched as she dragged more buckets and pieces of wood together to create a beam for him to do tricks off. She grinned proudly at her work as she stood and brushed the back of her good hand across her forehead. Peter grimaced slightly as his eyes darted down to her cast, he still felt horribly guilty about that.

“Alright beat that Parker.” She called out and Peter smirked at her from the opposite end of her little obstacle course.

“What do I get when I do beat it?” He called out teasingly and watched her tilt her head in thought as she pursed her lips. Her hip jutted out to the side and Peter idly thought how cute she looked like that as she thought about his reward. Wouldn’t mind having a kiss from you as a reward. Peter jerked at the thought that crossed his mind and felt himself blush softly at the notion.

“I’ll buy you ice cream on the way home.” She offered and Peter grinned widely at the idea. While it wasn’t what he truly wanted he’d be more than happy to receive it.

“Alright fine!” He called out confidently. He knew his new abilities would aide him in completing the course and while for a moment he thought it’d be cheating he knew she’d forgive him. “Get your money ready Sinclair!” He taunted her before setting down his skateboard. He watched as she moved to the side to watch and he pushed off the ground with his foot.

His skateboard began to pick up speed and he felt the wind in his hair as he moved with the board. His senses dialed into the movement of his board and just as Peter was coming up to the first obstacle he bent his knees at the exact right moment to kick his board up into the air and sail over the bucket. He continued through the course until he came to the last bucket that stood right in front of Ev who was watching him with an amazed look on her face as her arms were crossed over her chest.

Peter knew exactly how he wanted to show Ev his new abilities and easily kicked his board up into the air to land at a diagonal on the bucket and held it there. He was balanced impossibly on the board as he leaned close to Ev’s face making her gasp loudly. Peter watched as her eyes widened as she studied him for a moment.

“How are you doing that?” She asked in shock and Peter grinned at her.

“Every since the spider bite I can do so much more than just this Ev. C’mon let me show you.” He said eagerly now and jumped off the board over her head and landed steady on his feet behind her. Ev whirled around gaping at him in surprise. He then gently took her hand and led her over to the warehouse building he had been in previously.

Walking over to the curved metal sheets that looked like the sides of a shipping vessel he positioned Ev in front of it. She watched him with furrowed eyebrows as he walked over to the metal and placed his hands against the metal. He felt his fingers stick to the metal and he began to crawl up the rounded surface. He heard Ev gasp loudly from behind him as he crawled higher and higher up the metal sheet.

“What the fuck?!” Ev cried out as she stared up at him. Peter let go with one hand while keeping the other still attached. “You can climb walls now!?” She shouted up at him and he grinned down at her while holding his hand out for her.

“Wanna come up?” He asked teasingly and she shook her head while waving her hands in front of her as she stepped back away from the metal. Peter leaped off the metal sheet and landed right behind her before wrapping his arms around her waist, he felt giddy with sharing his abilities with her. Like he was sharing a secret with her, something that he hadn’t done in so long.

“So what? You’re an actual spider now?” She asked confused and incredulously. She was still facing away from him and Peter knew that she was trying to wrap her head around what he had just shown her. Trying to make sense of it.

“No, not an actual spider.” He said still giddy. “But I have spider-like abilities now. Like climbing the wall thing.” He informed her and she nodded her head at his words, staying silent. “I can swing kinda like Tarzan but different.” Ev suddenly turned in his arms gazing up at him.

“Show me.” She insisted and Peter scoffed at her. He walked over to the hanging ladder and jumped up onto the last rung making Ev gasp out softly watching as he quickly climbed up to the top before leaping through the air and grabbing onto the nearest chain to swing himself around the warehouse. He could sense Ev turning to watch him silently until he landed on the unsturdy table not too far from her. “So you can climb walls, swing from one spot to another.” She said mystified as she turned and began to pace.

Peter jumped off the table and walked over to her as she continued to pace. He watched as she crossed her casted arm over her stomach and leant her other arm up on it as she bit at her thumb nail. “What else can you do? I mean what else do spiders do?” She asked curiously as she stopped her pacing and looked up at him.

“Well I can jump really high. We saw that when I broke the basketball backboard. And I’ve gotten stronger, how many other teenagers do you know who can break a basketball hoop off a glass backboard? I can hang up on ceilings and walls, that’s the whole sticking to the wall thing.” Peter said and Ev nodded her head silently. “I also have like this premonition type of sixth sense.” He said softly and Ev looked at him with a furrowed brow. “Like I can sense when danger is coming towards me. Or when something bad is going to happen.”

“Really?” She asked softly.

“Yeah I think I felt it the night that Uncle Ben was shot. But I didn’t understand it or listen to it at the time.” Peter said and when he didn’t hear any response he looked up and saw that she had tears falling down her face with her mouth hanging open.

“He was shot?” She asked, sounding devastated and Peter forgot that he hadn’t told her about what happened.

“I’m so sorry Ev.” Peter wailed out softly as he watched her begin to cry hard and her face pinched inwards at the information. He stepped close to her and hugged her tightly burying her face in his chest with his hand cradling the back of her head. “It’s all my fault. I got distracted while helping Dr. Connors at OSCORP that night after school and forgot to pick Aunt May up at the train station. Uncle Ben and I fought when I got home, I stormed out and he went after me trying to bring me home. I wound up at that little bodega you like, couldn’t buy chocolate milk and had to leave because of that nasty clerk. The guy behind me robbed the till and I just walked out without doing anything. He stole some beer and ran but he bumped into Uncle Ben and I guess he had a gun that fell on the sidewalk. Uncle Ben tried to make a grab for it and the guy shot him in the struggle.” Peter told her while he held her.

Ev sobbed into his chest and gripped at the back of his shirt as she cried. Peter felt horrible for having to tell her like this days after the incident when he should have told her that night. But she had never pushed him for information and he had gotten so used to her caring for him that Peter forgot to tell her.

“I’m so sorry Ev. It’s all my fault.” He cried softly in her ear and Ev began to shake her head at his words.

“Don’t you say that.” She hissed at him and Peter jerked back at her words. “Don’t you ever say that.” She hissed again as she looked up from his chest. Peter stood there gaping at her as she stared up at him. She was beautiful, her eyes were red from crying tears were still falling from them making wet tracks along her face. But she was so beautiful to him as her eyes sparked with indignant fire as she still tried to ease his grief while she was also grieving.

Peter pulled her back into his chest and she sobbed softly into his shirt. She began to shake her head and tried to push him away. Peter finally relented and loosened his grip on her so that her head could lift and she looked up at him.

“His death is not your fault and it never will be your fault. Do you understand?” She sternly told him and Peter looked down at her in surprise. While he was surprised at her determination to make sure he didn’t blame himself, he figured he shouldn’t be. His best friend would make sure that he was well and safe before she would think to care about herself.

“Understood.” He said softly. Peter gazed down at her seeing the sorrow swirling in her eyes and he only felt himself drowning in her eyes. “I have this rage rising inside of me.” He confessed softly and Ev blinked, tilting her head to the side. “It’s starting to simmer and boil as the days go by that this asshole isn’t caught. The cops aren’t doing anything.” He said softly and Ev reached up with her good hand to cup his cheek

“They’ll catch the guy.” She whispered to him and Peter shook his head. “Pete it’s not like you can go looking for this guy! Let the cops do their job. They’ll find the asshole.” Ev insisted softly and Peter felt his mind begin to spiral with her words. It wasn’t such a bad idea to him. The cops weren’t doing anything and he doubted that they’d be able to find the guy, so why shouldn’t he try?

Peter kept those thoughts to himself as he hugged Ev once again. She buried her face in his shirt, the two of them just standing there holding each other taking and giving comfort to each other. It last a few moments before Ev lifted her head and looked up at him curiously with a slight grimace on her face.

“What is it?” Peter asked amused as he knew she had a question for him and knew he was going to make fun of her for it.

“So do you lay eggs like a spider?” She asked softly and Peter burst out laughing as he tightened his hold on her while shaking his head.

“No stupid, I don’t lay eggs.” He said still laughing brightly at her question.

“It’s a legit question! You said you had spider-like abilities! Spiders lay eggs!” She reasoned out and Peter laughed as he hugged her more. “I’m just saying!” She cried out indignantly as a grin blossomed on her face.

“Uh huh.” He teased her as he continued to laugh softly at her.

“Well that’s a relief for you at least. That would’ve been one awkward conversation for your girlfriend later on.” Ev teased him and Peter shook his head still laughing as he grinned at her. The thought from earlier resurfaced in his brain and Peter imagined what it would be like to be her boyfriend.

“C’mon dumb dumb let’s go get that ice cream before we gotta pick up Aunt May.” He said softly feeling his cheeks start to ache with how wide he was smiling. Ev chuckled as she snuggled further into his arms.

I love receiving comments, but lately I haven't been on my best mental space so I haven't felt like interacting as much as I usually do. I try to always pour out everything I want to say in the author's notes. I'll probably end up responding to all unanswered once I feel a bit better.

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Mmmmmm... I really like to go for happy endings, but I guess it is The Words Never Said (ATLA, Zutara).

What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

Most of my fics already are tagged as fluff without plot, so it's kind of hard to pick 😅. I think I'll go for a rather recent one Don't You Forget About Me (ATLA, Zutara), the atmosphere where the fic takes place is very angsty but I love how sweetly it ends.

Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the craziest one you’ve written?

I wrote one between ATLA/Shadowhunter Chronicles, but I deleted it, it was pure self-indulgence. I am thinking of giving such a crossover another chance, I have a super crackship I want to finally write.

And maybe I'll keep up the crackships and crackfriendships for an ATLA/Voltron crossover.

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Yeah. It reached a point where I actively avoided looking at the comments for a while.

Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I do, but most of it is unpublished. It's all "Angst with Feels", I headcanon many characters having issues with physical intimacy so it becomes a milestone for them when they finally achieve it with their significant other.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of, I don't know why anyone would want to steal my fics 😅

Have you ever had a fic translated?

I translate my own fics. It's a personal vendetta of mine because all published translations of bestsellers are in European Spanish (Spanish from Spain) instead of American Spanish (Spanish from Latin America).

What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

There was inspired by the prompts for the ATLA-Summer Festival, but I'm not feeling the drive to all of them anymore. I'll probably write some one-shots with the scenes I have the clearest.

There was also this Jetko highschool AU, but I'm not feeling Contemporary YA. I don't want to discard it so soon though.

There was a Modern AU Zutara crackfic that I'm also not sure of right now.

Also, a MikaYuu (Seraph of the End) one-shot, but the recent chapters of the manga make it difficult for me to picture where to set the story.

What are your writing strengths?

I wouldn't know. I've been told I characterize very well, that I give the characters nice chemistry, that I make scenes readers can easily see play out in canon, so... I guess there's that.

What are you writing weaknesses?

Everything 😅.

It's just my opinion. I'm a perfectionist, okay? I know I shouldn't be when it comes to writing, I'm working on that, but for the moment, I am and I'm always practicing in order to improve, and improve, and keep improving.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I love multilingual characters, I can relate to them. I'm always switching languages in the middle of a sentence.

What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Carry On Series. The first book, Carry On, awoke something after some reading hiatus I had taken, so I thought it'd be nice to give something back.

What’s your favorite fic you’ve ever written?

I'm currently very excited about my main WIP, Book One: Wind. It's an Avatar!Zuko AU. But the reason I write is because I sincerely enjoy all my stories, I reread them from time to time, so it's hard for me to choose. Also, I have many things planned and I'm excited to show them, it's really hard to choose.

Fairy Tale Retellings

I know that @magpie-trove has been recommended enough books to fill several years, but since fairy tale retellings are my niche, I’m going to throw some more titles out there. (I’m limiting myself to 1) books/short stories 2) that I enjoyed 3) that I haven’t seen mentioned in connection to the original post. I’m also trying not to branch out into too many tales, so I’m going to be leaving out some slightly more obscure ones).

Before I go into the specifics, I’m just going to say, that if you only read three books out of this list, read Entwined by Heather Dixon (12 Dancing Princesses),  Brine and Bone by Kate Stradling (Little Mermaid) and Valiant by Sarah Macguire. (And if you only read one series, make it Regina Doman’s Fairy Tale Novels.)

Cinderella

Before Midnight by Cameron Dokey: Short, sweet, autumny retelling that I like for the atmosphere and the loving relationship between Cinderella and her stepfamily.

Silver Woven In My Hair by Shirley Rousseau Murphy: Extremely short, traditional retelling, starring a mistreated girl who collects Cinderella stories while being in one of her own. Has a sweet charm to it.

Soot and Slipper by Kate Stradling: A short retelling set in a traditional fairy tale kingdom, but with an excellent plot twist. I like it very much until the ending entangles it in a far-too-complicated magic system.

The Reluctant Godfather by Allison Tebo: A sassy retelling starring a grumpy fairy baker who tries to get out of his godfather duties by getting his two charges to fall in love with each other. Gets points for a unique, almost Wodehousish parody element that is an extreme breath of fresh air in a genre dominated by YA romances.

The Spinner and the Slipper by Camryn Lockhart: Mashes up the story with Rumpelstiltskin. Clearly the work of a very young author, but I’m putting it on here for the fun use of the fairies from A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Beauty and the Beast

Unseen Beauty by Amity Thomsen: Traditional fantasy retelling from the POV of one of the invisible servants. Writing that’s a cut above most self-pubbed books, with extra points for featuring a female friendship that’s just as important as the main romance.

Snow White

Fairest Son by H.S.J. Williams: Gender-flipped version involving the fae. Is the only Snow White retelling that had me uncertain for a while of where the plot was going to go.

Sleeping Beauty

A Long, Long Sleep by Anna Sheehan: A sci-fi retelling involving a girl who was regularly kept in stasis for the convenience of her corporate mogul parents, then was left in stasis for more than 70 years while the apocalypse happened. She wakes up to a world that’s recovered to become a very different place and has to deal with the emotional fallout of everything that’s happened to her. And it’s intense. This book has the distinction of being one of only two books with scenes that made me put the book down so I could sob uncontrollably. (The other is Rapunzel Let Down). There’s a little bit of content (a couple of kissing scenes that veer toward steamy, and use of futuristic swear words that have clear connections to modern swear words) but easily skippable.

The Little Mermaid

Brine and Bone by Kate Stradling: On first read, I appreciated it as a faithful-to-Andersen retelling, but found it otherwise forgettable. I reread it earlier this year and cannot understand how I possibly came to that conclusion. This has beautiful character work in a unique world that, I cannot stress this enough, is loyal to the Andersen version while appreciating the true joy of that ending.

Silent Mermaid by Brittany Fichter: First half had some excellent world-building and interesting conflicts that fell apart in a more cliche second half, but I remember it being enjoyable overall.

The Princess and the Pea

The Bruised Princess by A.G. Marshall: Part of her Once Upon a Short Story collection. They’re all decent-to-great, but this one is my favorite, a sweet little romance that makes the story make a surprising amount of sense.

I need to give a shout-out to my favorite retelling of this tale. I can’t remember the title. It was on Fanfiction.net back in the day. (I tried looking it up, but it wasn’t part of the collection I assumed it was in). It was from the POV of the servant who had to stuff all twenty mattresses. She has allergies and is miserable by the time she’s done, and gets her revenge by stuffing the top mattress with gravel.

The Twelve Dancing Princesses

Entwined by Heather Dixon: One of my very top favorite retellings, a creative and whimsical and touching story focusing on the twelve close-knit sisters and their relationship with their buttoned-up father in the aftermath of their mother’s death.

The Brave Little Tailor

Valiant by Sarah McGuire: The only retelling I’ve ever seen of this tale, starring a girl who has to masquerade as a boy to get work as a tailor, and winds up entangled in a kingdom’s battle against giants. The first act is very boring, but it turns into a very well-done retelling with excellent characters and worldbuilding.

Bonus: Series

These are series that retell several fairy tales in the same universe, and I thought it’d be easier to present them all together than separating them out by fairy tale.

The Fairy Tale Novels by Regina Doman: Catholic retellings set in the modern day. They have their weak points, but they’re my gold standard for how to write a modern retelling and how to write a religious romance.

The Shadow of the Bear: Snow White and Rose Red. Fun and adventurous. Gets points for introducing me to Chesterton.

Black as Night: Snow White, focusing on the Snow White character from the first book. Darker and more intense, but with some deep themes.

Waking Rose: Sleeping Beauty, focusing on the Rose Red character’s adventures in college. By far the most popular book in the series, it’s overlong, but extremely good.

The Midnight Dancers: The Twelve Dancing Princesses, focusing on mostly new characters with a side character from Waking Rose in the soldier role. A slighter story with a pricklier main character, but it’s a strong contender for my favorite in the series, exploring the connections between beauty and truth and goodness.

Alex O’Donnell and the 40 Cyberthieves: Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, starring Waking Rose side characters. This is a lighter adventure tale. All the stuff surrounding the hacking subplot is slightly ridiculous, but it’s one of the only YA novels I’ve ever seen that explores the realistic nuances of considering marriage with someone very different from you.

Rapunzel Let Down: Rapunzel. By far the darkest themes (it’s classified as an adult book). All new characters with some cameos. I thought it was decent on first read, but on reread, it blew me away with some of its themes (Except for a very melodramatic fifth act).

The Andari Chronicles by Kenley Davidson: Retellings set in a very mildly magical fantasy world, mostly focused on political intrigue.

Traitor’s Masque: Cinderella. 60% longer than it needs to be because of the extremely wordy writing style, and it makes me tear my hair out every time I try rereading, but the core conflict between the two brothers is compelling.

The Countess and the Frog: The Frog Prince. A short prequel novella focusing on a side character from the first book. I think it’s only available as a freebie on the author’s site but may be one of my favorite romances because the leads are so cute and sensible together.

Goldheart: Rumpelstiltskin. My favorite in the series, focused on a shy painter given an impossible task and the friends who help her get through it. The writing style’s much more concise here.

Pirouette: The Twelve Dancing Princesses. Political-intrigue focused. Also much wordier than it needs to be, though not as much as the first book. Twists the fairy tale in extremely interesting ways and has some great characters. (Prologue and epilogue are some of my favorite bits of writing in the series).

Shadow and Thorn: Beauty and the Beast. The most magical book in the series, and the most confusing because of that. There was one really cool moment with Beauty’s father, but otherwise I didn’t care for it all that much.

Daughter of Lies: Snow White with spies. Short, but fun. Reminds me of a Georgette Heyer farce.

Path of Secrets: Red Riding Hood with spies. I remember nothing about this story, which may tell you all you need to know.

Once: Six Historically Inspired Fairy Tales: What I think of as a kind of spin-off to the Rooglewood collections, this novella collection by six different authors retells six different fairy tales. My favorites are a dark but beautiful “Little Match Girl” retelling set in WWII, a steampunkish Rumpelstiltskin, and With Blossoms Gold, a Rapunzel retelling set in the Renaissance. (The only one I didn’t like at all was the Sleeping Beauty story).

Destined series by Kaylin Lee: Includes retellings of Cinderella, Rapunzel, Beauty and the Beast, Red Riding Hood, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty in one interconnected storyline. I’ve only read the first four; they’re okay-to-decent books whose main strength is the unique world they’re set in (think magical steampunky 1930s, which seems like a work of genius after you’ve been reading through a million retellings set in generically fairy tale kingdoms). My favorite is the fourth, Betrayed, which retells Little Red Riding Hood and mostly stands alone (until the last act veers it into a really complicated overarching plot).

First of all, sorry for the wait. It took me awhile to go through my ffnet and ao3 fave lists and confirm if the fic did have a happy ending at least. Some here will end with fluff, some with smut, and some will be more subtle but still soft and happy.

My go to story when I’m in this mood is Heartbeat by letmeannoyyoutoday, which I have recommended here before. It’s long and detailed, and it will make you cry before it will make you smile ;)

ILLEGIBLE’S TOTALLY SUBJECTIVE FAVORITE EORZEA COLLECTION DESIGNS: FEMALE

I’ve mentioned in the past, the main thing that made me start playing FFXIV properly was seeing people’s character designs. I’m still honestly blown away by the creativity and range of approaches people bring to this game, so I’ve decided to be an absolute madwoman and break my favorites into subcategories to share with anyone curious.

And to be clear. I’m not going to do something so broad as “oh top ten in-general :3″ because that would be sensible. No, I’m going to do it for all the current combat jobs. And all the current races. And different genders within the races and combat jobs as things stand. And I’m going to make a face-focus subcategory. And there are gonna be LOTS. Because I seriously cannot understate how inspired I’ve been by this community, and after however many years I just feel the need to vomit some incredible visuals I’ve encountered at you guys lol.

NOTE: In an abundance of caution, I want to stress this list isn’t a value judgment on anyone but a fragment of things that blew me personally away. Looking at the DRK sections it will be immediately clear that I Illegible really like that edgy dark knight aesthetic lmao, but there are plenty of non-edgy dark knights that I also love to bits. Other people might not like edgy dark knights. Due to a combination of size and search constraints plus trying to keep gear somewhat varied, these glamours are just what wound up on this particular list of mine. I could make another list one day. Other people can make lists too that are totally different.

At that one word, everything in your mind evaporates.

Gunho?

You don’t know how many times you feel like your brain has been reduced to a weak, steaming pile of mush, but you’re very sure about this, just one more bombshell dropped on you and you might as well just slip into a comatose state for the rest of your life.

You’re familiar with the word, most of all from Yunho’s lips. The lookout speaks of old tales about his brother nearly every day, recalling fond stories about their time in the arena, how their brotherhood blossomed, especially so in the bleakness of the arena. You’re well versed with the tales of how the two of them had looked out for each other, watched each other’s backs, grown up to become comrades and best friends.

In the rigging, you had listened to him recall days of training and fighting as the three of you, you, Yunho and Wooyoung, had worked to raise and adjust the sails together. When the wind was constant and the weather was good, all of you would sit in the ropes and listen to Yunho talk. You had not  much past to speak of and Wooyoung steered clear of speaking about any history of his, thus his tales entertained the two of you greatly and helped to pass the time. You didn’t mind, the lookout was a good speaker, peppering his stories with funny anecdotes and often poor attempts at acting which always brightened your mood.

But behind every happy tale, there had been a lingering sadness in Yunho’s eyes, a pained smile to the end of every story, an unspoken, sad conclusion to what should have been a beautiful chronicle of brotherly kinship.

Gunho’s death had weighed heavily on Yunho’s mind, you know, from the way his eyes sadden minutely every time you bring him up on accident. Yunho prefers remembering the happy, good times with his brother, when the two of them had been together, but the thought of his brother always brings up a single fact that he can never ignore.

He had been too late to save his brother.

It’d been like a bitter pill for Yunho, hard to swallow and even harder to accept but he’s done it already, biting back his tears to face the big, wide world with a positive, cheerful smile. He’s supposed to have moved on already, putting the past behind him as he continues to move forward… but you doubt that he would have expected for his past to be dredged up again once more, upturning everything he had once believed.

Gunho is alive.

It’s as if time stands still for a moment as the once hooded man straightens up to stare at Yunho in surprise, sword nearly falling from his grip from the shock of seeing his older brother after so long. Deep brown meets deep brown as the two of them simply take in the appearance of the other, as if they can’t really believe that fate was kind enough to let them cross paths once again in this lifetime.

You’re almost ecstatic for Yunho, knowing that this must be the most heartwarming reunion that you’ll ever have the luck to witness. A grin pulls widely at your face as you turn to look at Yunho, who’s simply gazing upon his brother in disbelief. Slowly, you see him blink, once, twice, as if trying to prove to himself that this really isn’t a dream, before his jaw clenches and you see a single tear spill over his eyelashes and down to his cheek.

“Gunho… you’re alive?” Yunho chokes out, voice overcome with emotion and the brown haired man looks as if he’s been snapped out of some sort of daze. A blinding, dazzling smile of sheer joy spreads over his face as tears rolls down his own cheeks.

“Brother, I’ve been searching for you so long!”

Hesitantly, Yunho looks over to his captain, who looks just as stunned as everyone else on board is. Then he nods, slowly, and Yunho is stepping forward slowly, as if still in a daze. Gunho throws his longsword to the side in his excitement and runs straight into his brother’s arms, embracing him tightly.

The moment the two of them meet, the entire crew seems to heave a sigh of relief. There is no one on this ship who doesn’t know exactly how dear Gunho was to Yunho, or how much Yunho regrets not being able to save his younger brother from that godforsaken arena. But now, even if it had to be through this terrible meeting with the Royal Navy, Yunho can be reunited with Gunho.

Something warm blooms in your heart as you watch the two of them hug, squeezing the life out of each other.

“I can’t believe you’re alive.” Yunho sobs into his brother’s shoulder, now that you see them side by side, Gunho is shorter than Yunho, more stocky and built as compared to Yunho’s taller and longer stature. Gunho nods, one hand reaching to pat his brother on the back reassuringly as his other reaches to his belt.

And something sinks in your chest.

“I missed you so much.” Gunho rests his head on his brother’s, voice soft and soothing, rocking Yunho back and forth gently as Yunho continues to cry, shaking his head and mumbling incoherent apologies into Gunho’s shirt. “I really do love you… brother.”

What happens next is almost too fast for you to see.

You don’t think anyone could have expected it, really. Not a single person on the ship could have possibly even guessed in the slightest that this was coming. Even though it happened right in front of your eyes, you merely stood there in shock and watched as everything seemed to fall apart in that one split second, unable to move, mind incapable of processing the events that had just happened.

One blink of an eye, the two brothers are embracing.

In the next, Yunho is crumpled on the deck, blood gushing from his side.

For a moment, no one moves.

Incomprehension.

Shock.

Disbelief.

What?

It’s a razor sharp knife, the steel drenched in dark red blood. Your eyes, wide with terror, follow the weapon as Gunho merely raises the blade to his mouth, licking the blood off the knife while he looks upon his brother writhing on the ground with what you can only describe sick, twisted amusement.

“Oh? I didn’t think you’d be on guard enough to react so quickly around me. And here I thought you were glad to see me again, brother.” Gunho merely sighs as if disappointed, shaking his head as his tongue darts out to catch a little smear of blood at the corner of his serene smile. “But then again among of the two of us, you were always the lucky one, weren’t you?”

Yunho chokes in pain, a muffled scream ripping from his throat as he curls into a ball, crimson spilling over his fingers and staining the deck red with his blood.

His brother turns around, facing Commander Kang as your brain tries to understand what has just happened, but it’s failing miserably. “Let’s go, Commander.”

Nothing makes sense to you, you manage to think blankly to yourself, as the world pitches and rolls around you. Absolutely nothing. But one thing you do know, that you’ve been trained to do ever since you stepped onto this ship, is to treat the wounded, and you know that Yunho is going to die if you don’t get to him as fast as possible.

But you’re terrified. Your master isn’t here, he’s in the captain’s cabin, together with Mingi, there is no time for you to call him, and you will be utterly alone. There will be no one to instruct you, to make choices for you, to share the responsibility with you.

If Yunho dies...

For a moment, you so desperately just want to stay rooted to the spot in fear. But you do know that every second you think, Yunho’s life drains away little by little, and with a curse, you throw all rational thinking to the wind. Hurrying forward, you tear your outer shirt from your shoulder, kneeling at Yunho’s side as you inspect the wound as fast as possible, trying to remember everything your master has taught you through the haze of panic.

The second you spring into action, your captain moves too, pulling his musket from his belt as he takes aim at Gunho, eyes narrowed with blazing fury.

But Gunho doesn’t seem intimidated in the least, simply smiling amicably and sliding the knife back into the belt as if he hasn’t just stabbed one of your crewmates in the gut in an attempt to kill him. Hongjoong’s fingers tighten on the trigger.

The crew too, begin to stir into movement, raising their weapons to fight, but then one voice cuts through the noise.

“Hongjoong, no!”

Only his true name, shouted so desperately by one of his closest friends, could have any chance of stopping your captain in the blind rage he is in. His green eye is clouded over with pure, undiluted wrath, the usual flames in his gaze fanned to a blazing inferno. Normally, you realise, no one would have a chance against him when he’s like this.

But then, it’s Yunho telling your captain to stop. Yunho, who’s just been stabbed by his long lost brother, one who he had once thought the world of. Yunho, bleeding out and dying next to you.

He can’t bring himself to kill his younger brother.

And because it’s Yunho who tells him to stop, Hongjoong does. But you can see every muscle in his body just screaming to pull the trigger, but he holds steady, the barrel of his musket trained at Gunho’s head.

“Why did you do that?” Hongjoong snaps, his voice somehow ice cold yet burning with rage, every syllable is ringing with fury. Gunho merely shrugs, a cheerful, remorseless grin on his face that honestly is starting to look a little deranged to you.

“Just a little siblings’ spat, captain. Nothing too much to worry about.”

Breathing, you recall, your eyes snapping to Yunho’s face as you check him over. He’s panting, gasping from the pain as his fingers press against his wound, trying to stem the flow of blood. There are tears of agony in his eyes and you start ripping your overshirt into strips, pressing your makeshift padding against Yunho’s wound.

At the pressure, Yunho cries out in agony, the sound tearing at your heartstrings. You try your best to ignore the sound of one of your best friends sobbing right next to your ear, but each cry is so heart wrenching you wish you could just cut off your own ears to stop the heartrending sound. With Yeosang, it was a lot easier to just treat his wounds as he was nearly unconscious from blood loss, but with Yunho writhing around screaming in anguish right next to you as you press down hard on his wound?

No amount of training with San could have prepared you for this.

You glance upwards, seeing Seonghwa drop from the ropes and sprint across the deck to your side, crouching next to you as he takes in his friend’s ashen face. Heart racing in your chest, you take one look at the wound and you know simply stemming the bleeding with your pathetic replacement of actual bandages isn’t going to be enough. Making up your mind as fast as you can, you turn to Seonghwa. “Tell San to get here as fast as he can and grab my healer’s bag from the sickbay.”

The cook doesn’t even bother giving a nod in response, pushing through the crowd on the deck and racing to the cabin. A second later, your master bursts out of the door, face white with horror as he catches sight of Yunho on the ground. Then he’s by your side, checking Yunho’s breathing and pulse as his critical eyes rake across the wound.

“Stab wound, about two and a half inches wide. Serrated on one edge, and deep, but likely to have missed all his vitals organs.” San rattles off as he moves to inspect the wound more carefully. “Pulse is weak, but the blood isn’t pumping out, which means it luckily didn’t hit an artery. But he seems to be in too much pain for a wound this size…”

Then his face turns ashen in realisation and he leans in to sniff the wound, before his eyes widen with horror. You feel your heart drop in your chest at your master’s expression.

“The wound is poisoned.”

Your captain hears San’s words over the din and all of a sudden, you feel every hair stand on the end at the sheer anger that’s rolling off your captain in waves. Hongjoong’s fury almost seems like it’s on the verge of setting the very environment around him ablaze, every survival instinct screaming for you to get up and run away from him as fast as you can.

“Where is the antidote?” Hongjoong snarls, grip tightening on his gun, but your heart sinks at the words. Somehow, deep in you, you can already guess where it is. Gunho merely laughs like a tinkling bell, tilting his head to one side as he grins at your incensed captain with an innocent smile that might just be the most terrifying thing you’ve ever seen.

“Why you got to be so serious about this, captain? The antidote isn’t with me right now.” Gunho sighs, shaking his head as Commander Kang steps towards the rowboat they had come from, followed by the guards. At the bulwarks, he turns to smile at his brother one last time. “I hope you live, brother. It’ll be a lot more fun killing you slowly that way.”

You can’t help but stare at the younger Jeong brother in shock as he simply turns around and steps off the ship, not the least bit concerned about the muskets all trained at his back. Commander Kang eyes all of you coldly from the rowboat.

“Meet us on the Cayman Islands when you’re ready and bring along the four parts of the deal. The antidote will be there. Harm us in any way and the deal is off. I expect to see you there soon, captain.”

With that, they simply lower themselves to the sea, disappearing from your sight.

You now know why they had the audacity to step aboard this ship even though they were so vastly outnumbered. Your captain can’t possibly kill Commander Kang or Gunho. He needs them alive for answers and to save Yunho’s life. And it seems like such a cruel joke, that you and the crew have all been played along like this, like marionettes on a string.

Hongjoong screams in fury, his fingers tightening so hard on the musket that his fingers go white.

Why? What does the Royal Navy want with you?

Two months ago, on the sea witch’s island, you had chosen to give up your memories. Two months ago, you had decided to walk down the path with your crew mates and family instead, leaving your history behind you as you started on this new journey.

But now?

It seems like that elusive past is finally begin to surface, bringing with it all sorts of dangers and darkness that you hadn’t once thought existed.

And you're terrified at what is to come.

MLP Headcanon Dump

Just realized that I never bothered to post this on here. Heads up, this is a VERY long post.

Svengallop's parents are Charity Kindheart and Bracer Britches. The two had a brief affair, but never officially dated and Sven was an accident. Charity loved her son, but passed away due to illness when he was a teenager, so Sven was sent to live with his father who never wanted him. This has a lot to do with Svengallop's attitude as an adult.

All pure blooded draconequui are able to become pregnant or impregnate a partner, regardless of gender.

Wind Rider is a womanizer and serial adulterer with several illegitimate children, including Helia, Lighting Dust and Cloudy Daze among others.

There are some ponies who eat meat, such as fish, pork and chicken (eating beef and venison would be considered immoral since bovines and deer in Equestria are sentient). It's not particularly common and is actually considered gross by the majority, not unlike humans who eat insects. Equestria also has plenty of vegan alternatives that exist in our world, such as tofu and artificial meat.

The comic arc "Siege of the Crystal Empire" was actually just a fanfic written by Mina the dragon.

Tree Hugger is a member of the Hooffield Family. She ran away from home as a teen because she was sick of the constant fighting with the McColts. After running away she ended up joining a hippie commune, which is how she became the mare she is today.

Ocellus is the daughter of Queen Chrysalis. She will be queen of Thorax's hive after he is gone.

It is a tradition in Equestria for nurses to add 'heart' to the end of their names once they graduate nursing school. For example, Nurse Redheart's birth name is Redlove and Nurse Sweetheart is Sweetcream. This is in honor of Nurse Cureheart, the nurse credited for curing Celestia's broken heart after Luna's banishment.

The baby brother Hoops mentions in "The Cutie Mark Chronicles" is actually Spiral Notepad, who is now a trans filly.

Yaks speak Equestrian (aka English) so badly only because they have their own language and Equestrian is foreign to them.

The Kirin are thought to be the result of Asian unicorns interbreeding with dragons, but this has never been proven.

Derpy Hooves and Dinky Doo are mother and daughter, with Dinky having been born to Derpy when she was still in her teens. (I know it's an old headcanon, but I'll always have a soft spot for it.)

Quibble Pants is a natural blonde.

Derpy Hooves' real name is Ditzy Doo. "Derpy" was a childhood nickname that just kinda stuck.

Derpy has an eye condition called strabismus, hence the crooked eyes.

Crackle is a pseudodragon, a species of lizard that disguise themselves as dragons. Despite having twice as many limbs and gems growing out of them, they are accepted by dragons as one of their own.

Flash Sentry and Spearhead are brothers and are both descended from a pony that escaped the Crystal Empire during King Sombra's reign.

Sunset Shimmer and Sunburst are cousins.

Discord created Poison Joke.

Toe Tapper and Torch Song are the parents of Coco Pommel.

Hoity Toity is part mule, hence the long ears.

Celestia was born with an all-pink mane and tail and would have gained more shades of orange and yellow as she grew, but she instead gained hues of green and blue when she took over Luna's duty of raising the moon after Nightmare Moon's banishment.

Wind Sprint's original father died in a sports-related accident, which is why Clear Sky found comfort and common ground with Quibble Pants who was able to distract her from sports for a while. Unfortunately, as we all know from the episode, this had no effect on Wind Sprint's persistent love for sports.

Celestia was technically the first pony who managed to pull off a sonic rainboom, but it wasn't the same as Rainbow Dash's since she lacked the colors of a proper rainbow. Over time it was forgotten, but Celestia's "rainboom" was the basis of the sonic rainboom being a myth in the first place.

Pinkie Pie and Applejack's respective families are both descended from the children of Chancellor Puddinghead and Smart Cookie.

Orchard Blossom is an actual Apple family member that Big Mac was impersonating in "Brotherhooves Social".

Rainbow Blaze (the rainbow-maned stallion from "Games Ponies Play" who was confirmed is not Rainbow Dash's father) is Rainbow Dash's older brother.

The final alternate future seen in "The Cutie Remark-Part 2" where Equestria is nothing but an apocalyptic wasteland is a result of Daybreaker coming to life and burning everything to the ground into pure ash. It got so bad that it ultimately left Daybreaker with no kingdom to rule anymore. (As horrifying as it sounds, the dirt that Twilight and Starlight were standing on in that scene included the ashes of hundreds of dead ponies.)

Pear Butter and Bright Mac were killed by Timberwolves on a day trip. Sadly, Granny Smith considers herself responsible for this as she forgot to warn them about the Timberwolves that day. As a result, this is also why Applejack is so good at fighting them off.

Due to their godlike status, Celestia and Luna are the only immortal alicorns. Ordinary royalty like Twilight Sparkle, Cadance, and Flurry Heart have longer lifespans than normal ponies but can still die of old age.

Screwball is the daughter of Nurse Sweetheart and her eyes only become swirly when she's exposed to Poison Joke. The effect it has on her is that it makes her see weird stuff and she used to be addicted to it, but ended up quitting altogether as the last time she used it (around the time Discord returned) caused her to see some pretty nightmarish imagery.

The episode "Yakety Sax" was just a bad fever dream Pinkie Pie had after eating too much Yak cuisine one day.

All the changelings in Thorax's hive are siblings born from the same queen. Changelings do not interbreed with members of their own hive, though they may form family units with their siblings and adopt grubs to raise, hence the family of changelings Ocellus was seen with in "Hearths Warming Club".

Whoa Nelly's real name is Jelly Nelly Bean. Her large size is the result of a very rare pituitary disorder.

Fluttershy's human world counterpart is a vegan.

Aunt and Uncle Orange are both parental figures to Babs Seed. Whether they're her biological or adoptive parents in still unknown.

The hippocampus (aka the seaponies from the 2017 movie) once existed as a separate race, but are believed to have been driven to extinction because of the Sirens, who destroyed their homes, depleted their food sources, and even directly preyed on them. This was of course before Queen Novo fled into the sea and formed the seaponies we know from the 2017 movie.

Snap Shutter and Mane Allgood had Scootaloo later in life as they didn't really plan to have a foal, hence why they're such thoughtless parents.

Mane Allgood is actually a cousin of Daring Do.

Bulk Biceps is Featherweight's biological father. He was formerly married to an abusive, neglectful, and alcoholic wife, resulting in a divorce and Bulk and Featherweight moving to Ponyville and leaving her for good.

Cheese Sandwich is the younger brother of Marine Sandwich. The real reason he ran away from home and stumbled into Ponyville by chance is because he wanted to get away from his psychotic older sister. (Based off of this.)

Cheese Sandwich and Mudbriar are cousins.

Limestone Pie's talent is mixing drinks.

Burnt Oak is the father of the pony versions of Timber Spruce and Gloriosa Daisy.

Rumble is a trans colt.

Granny Smith's real name is Maria Ann Smith, or "Annie Smith" for short.

Fluttershy is the oldest of the Man Six, while Pinkie Pie is the youngest.

Trixie's full name is actually Bellatrix Lulamoon. She prefers to go by Trixie as it's easier to remember.

Tempest Shadow didn't receive her cutie mark until she was an adult, AFTER the events of the MLP movie where she started using her horn to make fireworks.

The draconequus were once a race of creatures that went to war against ponykind after their prince (aka Discord) was turned to stone. The war resulted in many of them being wiped out and it's currently unknown if any besides Discord still exist today.

Kirin shed and regrow their horns once a year, similar to deer antlers. Shed kirin horns make a powerful ingredient in potions.
